Abstract
BACKGROUND The interplay between physical and psychological symptoms frequently affects the health-related quality of life of asthma patients. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE This research aimed at assessing the psychological status of 60 patients attending their first/second doctor visit at which they were diagnosed with allergic asthma. Information on psychological distress was collected through the Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), personality traits were described through Cattell's 16-Personality Factor Questionnaire (16-PF), stress-related behavior was detected through the P Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), and the perceived quality of life was described with the Rhinasthma questionnaire. RESULTS The SQ revealed anxiety levels above the clinical cut-off in 71.7% of patients, levels of depression in 46.7%, anger-hostility in 53.3%, and somatic symptoms in 65%. No significant differences were observed after three months. The 16-PF scores were also suggestive of specific personality traits associated with the predisposition towards psychosomatic disorders. However, no stress-related behaviors were observed with the PSQ. Rhinasthma highlighted a certain degree of the perceived quality of life. Additionally, the quality of life correlated with age, all psychological distress scales, a few personality traits, vigor, and stress disorders. CONCLUSIONS Allergic asthma patients present a higher-than-average level of psychological distress and impaired perceived quality of life at the time of diagnosis. Therefore, it is important to assess the psychological status in addition to the respiratory function.

Abstract
There is limited literature examining the longitudinal stability of depressive symptoms for individuals with asthma, or how religiosity/spirituality relates to depressive symptoms across time. The present study aimed to identify the stability of and the longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and R/S across multiple developmental periods for adolesents with asthma (N = 998) within the United States. Depressive symptoms (βrange 0.33 - 0.60) and R/S (βrange 0.26 - 0.73) were stable across time, with some variability. A cross-lagged association demonstrated that use of R/S in young adulthood (Wave 3) was associated with decreased depressive symptoms in adulthood (β = -0.17, p < .001, CI - 0.25 - - 0.09, SE = 0.04). Use of R/S in adolescence (Wave 2) was predictive of increased depression in adulthood (β = 0.13, p < .001, CI 0.05 - 0.20, SE = 0.04). Results demonstrated differential relations between R/S and depressive symptoms across development, and highlight the potential importance of integrating conversations focused on R/S within healthcare settings, especially as R/S during young adulthood may buffer against or reduce depressive symptoms in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Individuals with asthma experience increased depressive symptoms, which is associated with deleterious health outcomes. No studies have examined depressive symptom trajectories among individuals with asthma despite increased risk. This study expanded prior literature by identifying the following: (1) depressive symptoms trajectories for individuals with and without asthma and (2) predictors of baseline levels and changes in symptoms across time for individuals with asthma. METHODS Adolescents with (N = 965) and without (N = 7,392) asthma self-reported on depressive symptoms (CESD-9) across development. Covariates included: demographics and persistence of asthma. Latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) was used to identify depressive symptom trajectories and their predictors. RESULTS A multigroup LCGM identified no significant differences between depressive symptom trajectories of individuals with and without asthma. Depressive symptoms followed a quadratic shape across time for individuals with asthma (Mintercept = 5.73, p < .00; Mlinear = -0.38,p < .001; Mquad = 0.03, p < .001), with a linear deceleration in depressive symptoms during adolescence and an acceleration of symptoms into adulthood. Next predictors of depressive trajectories among individuals with asthma were examined. Female sex (B = 0.58, p < .001), lower parent education (B = -0.57, p < .001), older age (B = 0.19, p < .001), and identifying as Black (B = 0.31, p = .04) were associated with greater baseline depressive symptoms. Older individuals exhibited faster linear symptom decelerations (B = -0.56, p < .001) and faster symptom accelerations (B = 0.73, p < .001). American Indian (AIAN) individuals exhibited faster linear symptom decelerations (B = -1.98, p = .005) and faster quadratic accelerations (B = 3.33, p = .007). DISCUSSION Our results suggest that the depressive symptom trajectories of individuals with asthma are curvilinear and similar to individuals without asthma. When examining predictors of depressive symptom trajectories for those with asthma, socioeconomic disadvantage and racial marginalization were associated with greater baseline depressive symptoms. Although AIAN youth demonstrated more favorable trajectories in adolescence, they also exhibited worse trajectories across young adulthood and adulthood. Findings suggest the need to better understand the impact of multilevel risk and protective factors on depressive symptoms trajectories for individuals with asthma, especially marginalized populations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Using self-determination theory, we explored relationships between autonomous motivation (AM) and perceived competence (PC) with previously validated measures of motivation and adolescent-reported asthma medication adherence. METHOD Data were from adolescents (n = 260) enrolled in the School-Based Asthma Care for Teens study and taking preventive medication at baseline. Eligible adolescents (aged 12-16 years) had physician-diagnosed persistent asthma or poor control. RESULTS Adolescents taking daily preventive medicine reported higher AM and PC for adherence, whereas adolescents likely to miss ≥1 dose in the next 2 weeks had lower AM and PC. Adolescents taking medicines as prescribed, with plans to continue, and those feeling able to follow provider care plans, had higher AM and PC. Findings remained significant in regressions with control variables. DISCUSSION Many factors interfere with adolescent medication-taking. Clinicians' efforts to build AM and PC with patients and caregivers may be key to promoting adherence in this group.

Abstract
It is increasingly recognized that children with asthma are at a higher risk of other non‐allergic concurrent diseases than the non‐asthma population. A plethora of recent research has reported on these comorbidities and progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms for comorbidity. The goal of this review was to assess the most recent evidence (2016–2021) on the extent of common comorbidities (obesity, depression and anxiety, neurodevelopmental disorders, sleep disorders and autoimmune diseases) and the latest mechanistic research, highlighting knowledge gaps requiring further investigation. We found that the majority of recent studies from around the world demonstrate that children with asthma are at an increased risk of having at least one of the studied comorbidities. A range of potential mechanisms were identified including common early life risk factors, common genetic factors, causal relationships, asthma medication and embryologic origins. Studies varied in their selection of population, asthma definition and outcome definitions. Next, steps in future studies should include using objective measures of asthma, such as lung function and immunological data, as well as investigating asthma phenotypes and endotypes. Larger complex genetic analyses are needed, including genome‐wide association studies, gene expression–functional as well as pathway analyses or Mendelian randomization techniques; and identification of gene–environment interactions, such as epi‐genetic studies or twin analyses, including omics and early life exposure data. Importantly, research should have relevance to clinical and public health translation including clinical practice, asthma management guidelines and intervention studies aimed at reducing comorbidities.

Abstract
Anxiety and depressive symptoms are associated with asthma-related acute care utilization. Few studies include rural adolescents. Asthma control may be the mechanism by which mental health affects acute care. This study explored associations between generalized anxiety, asthma-related anxiety, depressive symptoms, and acute care visits, and tested if asthma control mediates these associations among 197 rural adolescents with asthma. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and regression. Controlling for age, sex and race/ethnicity, asthma-related anxiety was associated with higher odds of acute care visits (OR = 2.09, 95% CI [1.42, 3.07]). Asthma control mediated this relationship: one unit increase in anxiety, on average, increased the odds of having any acute care visit by 5%. Generalized anxiety and depressive symptoms were not associated with acute care visits. Helping adolescents reduce their concerns regarding asthma while improving their self-management skill may potentially to reduce acute care among rural adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a common respiratory disease in children. We aimed to update information about the incidence and mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of childhood asthma and provide evidence-based recommendations for childhood asthma prevention. METHODS Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, which was conducted from 1990 to 2019 in 204 countries. First, we estimated incidence, mortality and DALY rates of childhood asthma using a Bayesian meta-regression model. Second, we analyzed the relationship between the sociodemographic index (SDI) and DALYs in different age groups. Third, we studied changes in trends of the age-standardized DALY rate between 1990 and 2019 based on age group, SDI, and risk factors. RESULTS Globally, the number of deaths due to childhood asthma and the incidence and DALY rates were 12.9 thousand (95% UI 10.6 to 15.7), 22 million (95% UI 15 to 31), and 5.1 million (95% UI 3.4 to 7.5) in 2019, decreasing by 65.1% (95% UI 47.6 to 72.4), 5.3% (95% UI 2.6 to 8.8) and 30% (95% UI 18 to 41) from those in 1990, respectively. With the exception of high-SDI regions, the age-standardized DALY rate in all age groups in all SDI regions declined. In 2019, the age-standardized DALY rate in 1- to 4-year-old individuals was highest in low-SDI regions and that of 5- to 19-year-old individuals was highest in high-SDI regions. In contrast to low-SDI regions, individuals in high-SDI regions had a higher risk of DALYs due to asthma, except in those aged 1 to 4 years. A high body mass index (BMI) was a stronger risk factor than occupational asthmagens for childhood asthma. CONCLUSION Our findings provide insight into asthma prevention and treatment through the identification of key factors related to childhood asthma. Based on the data available, different risk factors according to age group and region/country suggest different prevention strategies, which is key for preventing childhood asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent asthma is highly prevalent and frequently uncontrolled despite control being achievable with good self-management. Anxiety, depression, and stress are associated with worse asthma outcomes, and may impact self-management; no previous review has examined this relationship. AIM This scoping review assessed the nature of the current literature on mental health and asthma self-management among adolescents ages 11 to 24 and synthesized their relationships. METHODS Guided by the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we systematically searched the literature using MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Scopus in September 2020 and updated it in June 2021. Included studies examined associations between anxiety, depression, and/or stress and asthma self-management in adolescents ages 11-24. We did not restrict study design, location, or date. RESULTS Out of 1559 records identified, 14 met inclusion criteria. Types of self-management included trigger control, healthcare adherence, and overall symptom prevention and management. Anxiety symptoms were associated with poorer asthma self-management in four studies, but better in three. Depressive symptoms were associated with poorer asthma self-management in five studies, but better in two. Stress was associated with poorer self-management in one study. Mental health symptoms were nearly universally associated with poorer trigger control, but associations with healthcare adherence and overall symptom prevention and management varied. CONCLUSION Mental health symptoms may facilitate or hinder asthma self-management depending on the types of mental health and self-management. Further research is needed to better understand this relationship and inform future interventions. Providers might assess mental health as a potential barrier to adolescent asthma self-management.

Abstract
Asthma remains the most prevalent chronic respiratory disease of childhood. Severe asthma accounts for a minority group of patients but with substantial morbidity burden. It may reflect disease which is resistant to treatment or that which is difficult to treat, or a combination of both. The adolescent patient cohort denote a unique group and are the focus of this review. This group of patients embody transitioning priorities and evolving health beliefs, all of which may influence the management and burden of disease. Factors of importance include the influence of physiological parameters such as sex and race, which have confer implications for medical management and non-physiological factors, such as adherence, risk-taking behavior, and vaping. The holistic approach to management of severe asthma within this group of patients must acknowledge the evolving patient independence and desire for autonomy and strive for a collaborative, patient tailored approach. This review will focus on the factors that may pose a challenge to the management of severe adolescent asthma whilst offering suggestions for changes in practice that might harness patient priorities and shared clinical decision-making.

Abstract
Introduction: In comparison with the general population, several studies have reported higher anxiety and depression rates not only in children with allergic diseases but also in their parents. We aimed to evaluate the mental health of children and their mothers affecting quality of life (QoL) in children with allergic diseases, and to compare anxiety and depression in these patients and their parents with the general population.Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight patients aged 8-18 years diagnosed with an allergic disease who visited our outpatient clinic and a control group of 61 children who did not have any chronic or allergic diseases were included in the study. Patients completed the Pediatric QoL Inventory, Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, and Children's Depression Inventory, while mothers completed the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Independent samples' t-test was used to compare children's QoL, trait anxiety, and depression scores and mothers' GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores between the controlled/mild and uncontrolled/moderate-severe groups. The effects of age, gender, disease severity, maternal depression/anxiety, and children's depression/anxiety on QoL were analyzed with multivariate regression analyses.Results: QoL was lower in children with allergic diseases than healthy children, and although the mean QoL score was lower in the group with high disease severity, QoL in children with allergic diseases was not associated with disease severity but inversely related to anxiety/depression and maternal depression.Conclusions: As per the results, QoL is impaired in children with allergic diseases. Both anxiety/depression in the child and maternal depression may adversely affect QoL in these patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) and asthma are common ailments affecting both children and adults worldwide. Multiple studies have demonstrated an association between these two disorders. However, the exact reason for this observed association is not apparent. AREAS COVERED The current review has explored available literature and outlined multiple underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, common to both asthma and FAPDs, as possible reasons for this association. EXPERT OPINION Smooth muscle dysfunction, hypersensitivity and hyper-responsiveness, mucosal inflammation, and barrier dysfunction involving gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts are the main underlying pathophysiological mechanisms described for the generation of symptoms in FAPDs and asthma. In addition, alterations in neuroendocrine regulatory functions, immunological dysfunction, and microbial dysbiosis have been described in both disorders. We believe that the pathophysiological processes that were explored in this article would be able to expand the mechanisms of the association. The in-depth knowledge is needed to be converted to therapeutic and preventive strategies to improve the quality of care of children suffering from FAPDs and asthma.

Abstract
Asthma is among of the first ailments documented in the existing academic literature as being successfully managed with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) techniques. Time-efficient and well-tolerated OMT techniques have been gradually added to the literature to manage this increasingly prevalent disease. In this narrative review, the authors discuss previously-published literature describing the history, diagnosis, and management of asthma related to osteopathic principles and practices and OMT application. They also present current and newly-approved medical managements, including biologics and inhaled corticosteroids. This article also includes supplemental videos showcasing OMT techniques for asthma management, which were developed by the authors based on recommendations indicated in the literature.
