Prevalence of binge drinking and its association with mental health conditions and quality of life in Singapore

Adolescent alcohol binge drinking and withdrawal: behavioural, brain GFAP-positive astrocytes and acute methamphetamine effects in adult female rats

RATIONALE

Alcopop beverages are generally the first alcoholic beverage that young females drink which contain high levels of sugar and alcohol. The over-consumption of these drinks may encourage alcohol co-administration with methamphetamine (METH) impacting on drinking behaviour and glial function.

AIMS

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of adolescent binge alcohol exposure on consumption level, anxiety-like behaviour, cross-sensitization with METH and on astrocyte expression in reward related brain regions.

METHODS

Adolescent female Sprague-Dawley rats had daily 1-hour oral alcohol consumption of alcopop (ALCP; with sucrose) or ethanol-only (ETOH; without sucrose), transitioned from 5 to 15% (v/v) ethanol content for 34 days. Water and sucrose groups act as controls. During alcohol withdrawal, rats were tested for anxiety on the elevated plus maze (EPM) and locomotor activity following saline or METH (1 mg/kg i.p) treatment. Brains were then collected to assess astrocyte immunofluorescence for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in reward-related brain regions.

RESULTS

Rats pretreated with 5% ALCP consumed significantly more volume and ethanol intake when compared to 5% EtOH rats. Both ALCP and EtOH groups had a higher preference ratio for 5% than 15% alcohol solutions and ALCP rats had greater ethanol intake at 15% than EtOH rats. Alcohol withdrawal showed no significant differences between groups on anxiety, METH cross-sensitization effects or GFAP intensity in the regions studied.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the addition of sucrose to alcoholic solutions encouraged female rats to consume larger volumes and greater ethanol intake compared to ethanol-only solutions, yet did not have long lasting effects on behaviour and astrocytes.

Scoping review of assessment tools for, magnitudes of and factors associated with problem drinking in population-based studies

BACKGROUND

The term "problem drinking" includes a spectrum of alcohol problems ranging from excessive or heavy drinking to alcohol use disorder. Problem drinking is a leading risk factor for death and disability globally. It has been measured and conceptualised in different ways, which has made it difficult to identify common risk factors for problem alcohol use. This scoping review aims to synthesise what is known about the assessment of problem drinking, its magnitude and associated factors.

METHODS

Four databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Global Index Medicus) and Google Scholar were searched from inception to 25 November 2023. Studies were eligible if they focused on people aged 15 and above, were population-based studies reporting problem alcohol use and published in the English language. This review was reported based on guidelines from the 'Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist'. Critical appraisal was done using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.

RESULTS

From the 14 296 records identified, 10 749 underwent title/abstract screening, of which 352 full-text articles were assessed, and 81 articles were included for data extraction. Included studies assessed alcohol use with self-report quantity/frequency questionnaires, criteria to determine risky single occasion drinking, validated screening tools, or structured clinical and diagnostic interviews. The most widely used screening tool was the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. Studies defined problem drinking in various ways, including excessive/heavy drinking, binge drinking, alcohol use disorder, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Across studies, the prevalence of heavy drinking ranged from <1.0% to 53.0%, binge drinking from 2.7% to 48.2%, alcohol abuse from 4.0% to 19.0%, alcohol dependence from 0.1% to 39.0% and alcohol use disorder from 2.0% to 66.6%. Factors associated with problem drinking varied across studies. These included sociodemographic and economic factors (age, sex, relationship status, education, employment, income level, religion, race, location and alcohol outlet density) and clinical factors (like medical problems, mental disorders, other substance use and quality of life).

CONCLUSIONS

Due to differences in measurement, study designs and assessed risk factors, the prevalence of and factors associated with problem drinking varied widely across studies and settings. The alcohol field would benefit from harmonised measurements of alcohol use and problem drinking as this would allow for comparisons to be made across countries and for meta-analyses to be conducted.

Impact of licit and illicit substances on the oral health-related quality of life in adolescents

OBJECTIVE

To assess the impact of the consumption of licit and illicit substances on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of adolescents from public schools in the south of Brazil.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was carried out with a random sample of adolescents aged between 17 and 18 years old from Santa Maria, Brazil. The consumption of licit and illicit substances was measured through a self-administered questionnaire with questions from the National Survey of Scholar Health. The OHRQoL was collected using the Brazilian short version of Child Perceptions Questionnaire 11-14 (CPQ11-14). Multilevel Poisson regression models were used to estimate the association between the outcome and the explanatory variables where the adolescents (first level) were nested in their schools (second level).

RESULTS

A total of 768 adolescents were evaluated. Of these, about 15.6% have already used illegal substances. Adolescents who reported the use of illicit substances had 28% higher CPQ11-14 scores when compared to their counterparts. Alcohol use was also related to worse levels of OHRQoL, while the consumption of cigarettes acted as a protective factor.

CONCLUSIONS

This study found an association between the use of alcohol and illicit drugs with worse levels of OHRQoL.

A comparison of quality of life between older adults living in high and low altitude areas

Background

High altitude is known to have a significant impact on human physiology and health, therefore, understanding its relationship with quality of life is an important research area. This study compared the quality of life (QOL) in older adults living in high and low altitude areas, and examined the independent correlates of QOL in those living in a high altitude area.

Methods

Older adults living in three public nursing homes in Xining (high altitude area) and one public nursing home in Guangzhou (low altitude area) were recruited. The WHOQOL-BREF was used to measure the QOL.

Results

644 older adults (male: 39.1%) were included, with 207 living in high altitude and 437 living in low altitude areas. After controlling for the covariates, older adults living in the high altitude area had higher QOL in terms of physical (P = 0.035) and social domains (P = 0.002), but had lower QOL in psychological (P = 0.009) domain compared to their counterparts living in the low altitude area. For older adults living in the high altitude area, smoking status was associated with higher social QOL (P = 0.021), good financial status was associated with higher physical QOL (P = 0.035), and fair or good health status was associated with higher physical (p < 0.001) and psychological QOL (P = 0.046), while more severe depressive symptoms were associated with lower QOL.

Conclusion

Appropriate interventions and support to improve depressive symptoms and both financial and health status should be developed for older adults living in high altitude areas to improve their QOL.

Effect of Binge-Drinking on Quality of Life in the 'Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra' (SUN) Cohort

BACKGROUND

Binge-drinking is one of the alcohol drinking patterns with the worst health consequences. Nonetheless, binge-drinking is highly prevalent. The perceived benefits that motivate it are ultimately related to subjective well-being. In this context, we analyzed the relationship between binge-drinking and quality of life.

METHODS

We evaluated 8992 participants of the SUN cohort. We classified as binge-drinkers those who reported consuming six or more drinks on at least one occasion the year before recruitment (n = 3075). We fitted multivariable logistic regression models to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) of a worse physical and mental quality of life, measured with the validated SF-36 questionnaire at 8 years of follow-up (cut-off point = P₇₅ or highest score).

RESULTS

Binge-drinking was associated with greater odds of having a worse mental quality of life, even adjusting for quality of life at 4 years of follow-up, used as an approximation to a baseline measure (OR = 1.22 (1.07-1.38)). This value was mainly due to the effects on vitality (OR = 1.17 (1.01-1.34)) and mental health (OR = 1.22 (1.07-1.39)).

CONCLUSIONS

Binge-drinking may lead to poorer mental quality of life; therefore, binge-drinking for enhancement purposes does not seem to be justified by this effect.

Differences in the Prevalence and Profile of DSM-IV and DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorders-Results from the Singapore Mental Health Study 2016

INTRODUCTION

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) criteria for alcohol use disorders (AUD) was a significant shift from the historical DSM-IV Text Revised version. Following this shift in diagnostic criteria, a difference in the prevalence of AUD was expected. The current study aimed to evaluate the consequences of the modification of the diagnostic criteria from DSM-IV to DSM-5 AUD using lifetime diagnosis in Singapore's multi-ethnic population using data from a nationwide epidemiological study.

METHODS

Respondents were assessed for lifetime mental disorders using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) administered through face-to-face interviews. Lifetime DSM-IV AUD diagnoses were compared with DSM-5 AUD diagnoses generated by modifying the criteria and the addition of the craving criterion. Sociodemographic correlates of lifetime DSM-IV/DSM-5 AUD were examined using multiple logistic regression analysis. Associations between DSM-IV/DSM-5 AUD, chronic conditions, and the HRQOL summary scores were examined using logistic and linear regression after controlling for significant sociodemographic factors.

RESULTS

The lifetime prevalence of DSM-IV AUD was 4.6% (0.5% for dependence and 4.1% for abuse) in the adult population, while the lifetime prevalence of DSM-5 AUD was 2.2%. Younger age, male gender, and lower education were associated with higher odds of both DSM-IV and DSM-5 AUD. However, those who were economically inactive (versus employed) (AOR, 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.9) and had a higher monthly household income (SGD 4000-5999 versus below SGD 2000) had lower odds of DSM-IV AUD (AOR, 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.7), but this was not observed among those with DSM-5 AUD. Both DSM-IV and DSM-5 AUD were associated with significant comorbidities in terms of other mental disorders; however, those diagnosed with lifetime GAD had significantly higher odds of having DSM-5 AUD (AOR, 5; 95% CI 1.9-13.2) but not DSM-IV AUD.

CONCLUSIONS

While using the DSM-5 criteria would result in a lower prevalence of AUD in Singapore, it remains a highly comorbid condition associated with a poor health-related quality of life that is largely untreated, which makes it a significant public health concern.

Comparing Tobacco and Alcohol Policies From a Health Systems Perspective: The Cases of the Philippines and Singapore

Objective: To provide a comparative analysis of current tobacco and alcohol control laws and policies in the Philippines and Singapore Methods: We used a public health law framework that incorporates a systems approach using a scorecard to assess the progress of the Philippines and Singapore in tobacco and alcohol control according to SDG indicators, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the WHO Global Strategy to Reduce Harmful Use of Alcohol. We collected data from the scientific literature and government documents. Results: Despite health system differences, both the Philippines (73.5) and Singapore (86.5) scored high for tobacco control, but both countries received weak and moderate scores for alcohol control: the Philippines (34) and Singapore (52.5). Both countries have policy avenues to reinforce restrictions on marketing and corporate social responsibility programs, protect policies from the influence of the industry, and reinforce tobacco cessation and preventive measures against alcohol harms. Conclusion: Using a health system-based scorecard for policy surveillance in alcohol and tobacco control helped set policy benchmarks, showed the gaps and opportunities in these two countries, and identified avenues for strengthening current policies.

Gender Differences in Alcohol Use: a Nationwide Study in a Multiethnic Population

The increase in alcohol consumption, and the greater consequences of chronic alcohol use among females, as well as the convergence of the gender gap warrants investigation. This paper aims to uncover gender differences in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) in Singapore. The SMHS 2016 was a population-based, cross-sectional, epidemiological study. Recruitment spanned from August 2016 to March 2018, where 6126 respondents were recruited. Similarly to global estimates, lifetime prevalence and 12-month prevalence for AUD were higher in males than females. However, females had a higher prevalence of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) co-morbidity than males. Women also had an earlier onset and age of recovery of AUD than men. Alarmingly, male (94.14%) and female (100%) respondents reported low help-seeking for their AUD. Gender differences in individuals with AUD were identified in Singapore population. Future research should direct its effort to identify barriers to help-seeking for individuals with alcohol use disorder.

Do symptoms of depression and anxiety contribute to heavy episodic drinking? A 3-wave longitudinal study of adult community members

Heavy episodic drinking (or binge drinking) is a significant public health concern. Self-medication using alcohol is often thought to explain the co-occurrence of heavy episodic drinking with depression and anxiety. Yet, there is little longitudinal work examining both depressive and anxiety symptoms and how they are independently related to heavy episodic drinking in adult community samples. To this end, we invited adult community members (N = 102) to come to the lab to complete validated measures of depressive symptoms (composite of CES-D-SF, SCL-90-D, and DASS-21-D), anxiety symptoms (DASS-21-A), and heavy episodic drinking (composite of frequency, severity, and perceptions) at baseline, and again three and six months later. Using a three-wave cross-lagged panel model, we tested reciprocal relations between heavy episodic drinking and each internalizing symptom. We found strong temporal stability in our study variables. Depressive symptoms were associated with increases in heavy episodic drinking, and anxiety symptoms were associated with decreases in heavy episodic drinking. In contrast, heavy episodic drinking did not predict either internalizing symptom over time. Results are consistent with the notion that individuals with greater depressive symptoms use alcohol to self-medicate, and that anxiety symptoms (particularly autonomic arousal) may be potentially protective against future heavy episodic drinking.

An interrupted time series analysis of hospital admissions due to alcohol intoxication during the COVID-19 pandemic in Tehran, Iran

The COVID-19 outbreak affected mental health globally. One of the major concerns following the COVID-19 pandemic was increased incidence of risky behaviors including alcohol consumption. This study evaluates the trend of alcohol poisoning in Loghman-Hakim Hospital (LHH), the main referral center of poisoning in Tehran, during the 2-year period from 1 year prior to 1 year after the onset (February 23rd, 2020) of the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran. All patients admitted with alcohol intoxication from February 23rd, 2019 to February 22nd, 2021 were evaluated and patient data extracted from LHH electronic hospital records. Alcohols were categorized as toxic (methyl alcohol) and non-toxic (ethyl alcohol). Of 2483 patients admitted, 796/14,493 (5.49%) and 1687/13,883 (12.15%) had been hospitalized before and after the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran, respectively. In total, 140 patients did not survive, of whom 131 (93.6%) were confirmed to have methanol intoxication. Mortality was significantly higher during the outbreak (127 vs 13; P < 0.001; OR: 4.90; CI 95%: 2.75 to 8.73). Among the patients, 503 were younger than age 20. Trend of alcohol intoxication showed increases in children (57 vs 17) and adolescents (246 vs 183) when compared before and after the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak. A total of 955 patients were diagnosed with methanol toxicity which occurred more frequently during the COVID-19 era (877 vs 78; P < 0.001; OR: 10.00; CI 95%: 7.75 to12.82). Interrupted time series analysis (April 2016–February 2021) showed that in the first month of the COVID-19 epidemic (March 2020), there was a significant increase in the alcohol intoxication rate by 13.76% (P < 0.02, CI = [2.42–24.91]). The trend of alcohol intoxication as well as resulting mortality increased in all age groups during the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran, indicating urgent need for the prevention of high-risk alcohol use as well as improved treatment.

Uso de álcool associado aos transtornos mentais em homens adultos

Introdução: Do ponto de vista da saúde pública, a população masculina adulta mostra-se vulnerável ao uso de álcool e as suas consequências. A detecção precoce, assim como a busca por fatores associados são necessárias e as unidades de Saúde da Família são importantes locais para esta abordagem. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar o uso de álcool em homens adultos e verificar sua associação com fatores socioeconômicos, demográficos e transtornos mentais (episódio depressivo maior e transtorno de ansiedade generalizada). Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal em adultos de 20 a 59 anos do município de Piracicaba, cadastrados nas Unidades de Saúde da Família (USF) no ano 2018. Após análises descritivas, as variáveis com p<0,20 nas análises simples foram estudas em modelos de regressão binomial negativa múltipla. Pelo modelo final, estimaram-se as razões de médias ajustadas com os intervalos de 95% de confiança. Resultados: Observou-se prevalência de 26,9% de consumo de álcool na população estudada. O escore do The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) apresentou relação direta com a idade (razões de médias — RM=1,02; intervalo de confiança — IC95% 0,99–1,03). Quanto à religião, protestantes e evangélicos apresentaram escore médio de AUDIT menor que os demais (RM=1,78; IC95% 1,14–2,79). Pessoas com transtorno mental apresentam escore médio de AUDIT maior que os sem transtorno (RM=2,30; IC95% 1,28–4,11). Conclusões: Concluímos que o consumo de álcool na população adulta masculina é bastante prevalente, que seu consumo aumenta com a idade, que a religião tem efeito protetor e que pessoas com depressão e ansiedade apresentam maior propensão ao uso. Com base nesses dados, destacamos a importância da USF no desenvolvimento de estratégias que rastreiem as condições de risco de sua população, bem como discutam abordagens e possíveis intervenções.

Associations of common mental disorder with alcohol use in the adult general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Research has shown that alcohol use and common mental disorders (CMDs) co-occur; however, little is known about how the global prevalence of alcohol use compares across different CMDs. We aimed to (i) report global associations of alcohol use (alcohol use disorder (AUD), binge drinking and consumption) comparing those with and without a CMD, (ii) examine how this differed among those with and without specific types of CMDs and (iii) examine how results may differ by study characteristics.

METHODS

We used a systematic review and meta-analysis. Cross-sectional, cohort, prospective, longitudinal and case-control studies reporting the prevalence of alcohol use among those with and without a CMD in the general population were identified using PsycINFO, MEDLINE, PsyARTICLES, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science until March 2020. Depression, anxiety and phobia were included as a CMD. Studies were included if they used a standardized measure of alcohol use. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to generate pooled prevalence and associations of AUD with CMD with 95% confidence intervals (CI). A narrative review is provided for binge drinking and alcohol consumption RESULTS: A total of 512 full-texts were reviewed, 51 included in our final review and 17 in our meta-analyses (n = 382 201). Individuals with a CMD had a twofold increase in the odds of reporting an AUD [odds ratio (OR) = 2.02, 95% CI = 1.72-2.36]. The odds of having an AUD were similar when stratified by the type of CMD (mood disorder: OR = 2.00, 95% CI = 1.62-2.47; anxiety/phobic disorder: OR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.35-2.78). An analysis of study characteristics did not reveal any clear explanations for between-study heterogeneity (I²  > 80%). There were no clear patterns for associations between having a CMD and binge drinking or alcohol consumption, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

People with common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, phobia) are twice as likely to report an alcohol use disorder than people without common mental disorders.

Nationwide Alcohol-related visits In Singapore's Emergency departments (NAISE): A retrospective population-level study from 2007 to 2016

INTRODUCTION

Excessive alcohol consumption is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and its societal impact is substantial. The Nationwide Alcohol-related visits In Singapore Emergency departments study aims to characterise trends in ED visits involving acute and chronic alcohol consumption between 2007 and 2016.

METHODS

Data from the Singapore Ministry of Health, comprising all ED visits in Singapore from 2007 to 2016, were used. The data were aggregated by year and analysed for changes in prevalence and rates of ED visits for acute and chronic alcohol consumption, broken down by age, gender and ethnicity.

RESULTS

Over the study period, the number of ED visits involving alcohol consumption increased 98.3%, from 2236 in 2007 to 4433 in 2016. During the same period, the rate per 100 000 population increased 62.4% from 48.7 to 79.1, and total ED-related costs rose by 140%, from 528 680 to 1 269 638 SGD. The increase in alcohol-related visits rates and costs was higher than non-alcohol-related visits rates and costs, which increased by 12.1% and 115% respectively. While trends in acute and chronic alcohol-related ED visits stayed stable amongst women, they rose substantially in men. Older men aged 50-69 show the highest rates and rate of increase for both acute and chronic alcohol-related ED visits.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Alcohol-related visits contributed disproportionately to the increasing number of ED visits in Singapore between 2007 and 2016. Older men form the demographic with the highest rates and increase in rates of alcohol-related ED visits and form a potential group for targeted intervention.

Association between age at first alcohol use and heavy episodic drinking: An analysis of Thailand's smoking and alcohol drinking behavior survey 2017

According to evidence from developed countries, age at first alcohol use has been identified as a determinant of heavy episodic drinking (HED). This study aimed to investigate the association between age at first alcohol use and HED using data from the Smoking and Drinking Behavior Survey 2017, a Thai nationally representative survey. Binary logistic regression was used to examine the association. This study used data from 23,073 current drinkers in the survey. The survey participants were chosen to represent the Thai population aged 15 years and older. The prevalence of HED and frequent HED among Thai drinkers was 18.6% and 10.1%, respectively. Age at first drinking <20 years was associated with higher odds of HED (adjusted OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.26–1.62) and frequent HED (adjusted OR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.12–1.53) relative to age at first drinking ≥25 years. Regular drinking, drinking at home, and exposure to alcohol advertising increased the odds of HED. Drinking at home was associated with frequent HED. There was a significant interaction between the effect of age at first alcohol use and sex on HED and frequent HED with a stronger effect of age at first alcohol use observed in females. This study provides evidence from a developing country that early onset of alcohol use is associated with HED. Effective measures such as tax and pricing policy should be enforced to delay the onset of drinking.

Confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance of the English, Mandarin, and Malay versions of the SF-12v2 within a representative sample of the multi-ethnic Singapore population

BACKGROUND

The Short Form Health Survey (SF-12v2) is an increasingly popular measure of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Singapore. In order to examine whether the SF-12v2 was appropriate for use in the population, the factor structure and validity of the English, Mandarin, and Malay versions were assessed in a representative sample of the general population of Singapore.

METHODS

6126 respondents were recruited for the Singapore Mental Health Study 2016 (SMHS 2016), a cross-sectional and population-based survey. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to examine the fit of a two-factor model for the SF-12v2 within a representative sample and amongst the different language (English, Mandarin, Malay) subgroups. Multiple-group CFAs (MGCFA) were conducted to test measurement invariance across the different languages, ethnicities, and chronic illnesses subgroups. CFA-generated latent factor scores (FSCORE command in MPlus) were also compared with the composite scores derived from the developer's scoring method via correlations. Sociodemographic correlates of the latent physical and mental health scores were explored.

RESULTS

CFA results within the full sample supported a two-factor model (RMSEA = 0.044; CFI = 0.991; TLI = 0.988; SRMR = 0.044) in which physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain and general health items loaded onto a latent physical health factor, while role emotional, mental health, social functioning, and vitality items loaded onto a latent mental health factor. Physical and mental health factors were allowed to correlate, unlike the developer's orthogonal scoring method. All standardized loadings were high and statistically significant. Both factors had high internal consistency. CFA within subsamples of English, Mandarin, and Malay languages indicated similar findings. MGCFA results indicate that measurement invariance held across the different languages, ethnicities, and those with and without chronic illnesses.

CONCLUSION

The present study identified a two-factor (physical and mental health) structure within the general population and amongst the three different languages and demonstrated the measurement invariance of SF-12v2 across different subgroups. Findings indicate that algorithm-derived PCS and MCS should be interpreted with caution as they may result in inaccurate conclusions regarding the relationships between HRQoL and its correlates. Future studies using the SF-12v2 within the general population of Singapore should consider utilizing the factor structure put forth in the present study to obtain more appropriate estimates of HRQoL.

The effects of binge alcohol exposure on tooth movement and associated root resorption in rats

BACKGROUND

Considering the increasing prevalence of alcohol use and the growing number of orthodontic patients, some orthodontic patients might engage in binge drinking during treatment. Nevertheless, little is known about the effect of alcohol use on orthodontic treatment.

METHODS

Male Wistar rats were divided into ethanol and control groups (n = 32). The rats received a single daily intraperitoneal injection of 20% (vol/vol) ethanol/saline solution at a dose of 3 g/kg of ethanol or saline for three consecutive days, and no injection was given during the remaining four days each week. All rats received orthodontic appliances to draw the maxillary first molar mesially. The rats were sacrificed at days 14 and 28, respectively. The amount of tooth movement was measured. Root resorption area was evaluated by scanning electron microscope. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining were conducted. Immunohistochemistry staining was performed to evaluate the expressions of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS).

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in tooth movement and root resorption between ethanol and control groups. The number of TRAP-positive cells was significantly higher in the ethanol group. The expression of RANKL was statistically increased in the ethanol group. In contrast, the expression of OPG was remarkably decreased in rats injected with ethanol. Moreover, the iNOS level was significantly up-regulated in the ethanol group.

CONCLUSION

The tooth movement and root resorption in rats were not affected by binge alcohol exposure.
