Herbal Cannabis and Depression: A Review of Findings Published over the Last Three Years

Public perception contrasts scientific findings on the depression-related effects of cannabis. However, earlier studies were performed when cannabis was predominantly illegal, its production was mostly uncontrolled, and the idea of medical cannabis was incipient only. We hypothesized that recent changes in attitudes and legislations may have favorably affected research. In addition, publication bias against cannabis may have also decreased. To investigate this hypothesis, we conducted a review of research studies published over the last three years. We found 156 relevant research articles. In most cross-sectional studies, depression was higher in those who consumed cannabis than in those who did not. An increase in cannabis consumption was typically followed by an increase in depression, whereas withdrawal from cannabis ameliorated depression in most cases. Although medical cannabis reduced depression in most studies, none of these were placebo-controlled. In clinical studies published in the same period, the placebo also ameliorated depression and, in addition, the average effect size of the placebo was larger than the average effect size of medical cannabis. We also investigated the plausibility of the antidepressant effects of cannabis by reviewing molecular and pharmacological studies. Taken together, the reviewed findings do not support the antidepressant effects of herbal cannabis.

A cross-sectional study of the relationship between frequency of cannabis use and psychiatric symptoms among people seeking mental health and addiction services in Nova Scotia (2019-21)

BACKGROUND

Cannabis use may be a modifiable risk factor for mental health problems; however, the role of cannabis use frequency in population seeking mental health and addiction services remains unclear. This study aimed to: 1) compare the prevalence and functional impact of psychiatric symptoms among frequent, infrequent, and non-users of cannabis; and 2) evaluate the associations between cannabis use frequency and functional impact of psychiatric symptoms in help-seeking individuals.

METHODS

Data from the Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Central Intake system in Nova Scotia, Canada was used. Participants aged 19-64 who received MHA Intake assessments from September 2019 to December 2021 with complete information about substance use were included (N = 20,611). Cannabis use frequency over past 30 days was categorized into frequent (>4 times a month), infrequent (≤4 times a month), and non-use. Psychiatric symptomatology consists of five domains: mood, anxiety, psychosis, cognition, and externalizing behaviors. Multivariate ordinal logistic regression was used to examine the associations between cannabis use frequency and functional impact of psychiatric symptoms.

RESULTS

Frequent and infrequent cannabis users had a higher prevalence of psychiatric symptoms in each domain than non-users, while no significant differences were found between frequent and infrequent users. Frequent cannabis use was associated with greater functional impact of psychiatric symptoms in each domain compared to non-users, while infrequent use was only associated with greater functional impact of externalizing behaviors.

CONCLUSION

Frequent cannabis use is associated with increased prevalence and functional impact of psychiatric symptoms among adults seeking mental health services.

Effects of Recreational Cannabis Legalization on Mental Health: Scoping Review

OBJECTIVE

Recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) is expanding rapidly. RCL's effects on mental health issues are of particular concern because cannabis use is more frequent among people receiving psychiatric care and is associated with several psychiatric disorders. The authors conducted a scoping review to examine the evidence and discern gaps in the literature concerning the effects of RCL on mental health and to assess the factors responsible for an observed heterogeneity in research results.

METHODS

This scoping literature review followed PRISMA guidelines. Five databases-MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science-were searched for English- or French-language reports published between January 1, 2012, and April 30, 2023.

RESULTS

Twenty-eight studies from the United States and Canada were found. The studies were classified by category of the study's data (patients receiving psychiatric care [k=1], death records [k=4], emergency department or hospital records [k=10], and the general population [k=13]) and by the diagnosis (schizophrenia or psychoses, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and symptoms, suicide or suicidal ideation, or other mental health issues) examined. The review findings revealed a paucity of research and indicated mixed and largely inconclusive results of the studies examined. Research gaps were found in the examination of potential changes in cannabis use patterns among people receiving psychiatric care and in the availability of longitudinal studies.

CONCLUSIONS

Clinicians, researchers, and policy makers need to collaborate to address the research gaps and to develop evidence-based policies that reflect a thorough understanding of the effects associated with RCL.

Cannabis use and trauma-focused treatment for co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders: A meta-analysis of individual patient data

High rates of cannabis use among people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have raised questions about the efficacy of evidence-based PTSD treatments for individuals reporting cannabis use, particularly those with co-occurring alcohol or other substance use disorders (SUDs). Using a subset of four randomized clinical trials (RCTs) included in Project Harmony, an individual patient meta-analysis of 36 RCTs (total N = 4046) of treatments for co-occurring PTSD+SUD, we examined differences in trauma-focused (TF) and non-trauma-focused (non-TF) treatment outcomes for individuals who did and did not endorse baseline cannabis use (N = 410; 70% male; 33.2% endorsed cannabis use). Propensity score-weighted mixed effects modeling evaluated main and interactive effects of treatment assignment (TF versus non-TF) and baseline cannabis use (yes/no) on attendance rates and within-treatment changes in PTSD, alcohol, and non-cannabis drug use severity. Results revealed significant improvements across outcomes among participants in all conditions, with larger PTSD symptom reductions but lower attendance among individuals receiving TF versus non-TF treatment in both cannabis groups. Participants achieved similar reductions in alcohol and drug use across all conditions. TF outperformed non-TF treatments regardless of recent cannabis use, underscoring the importance of reducing barriers to accessing TF treatments for individuals reporting cannabis use.

Cannabis And College Students: Self-Perceived Mental Health Prior to, During, and After the Pandemic

Introduction

College students demonstrated changes in levels of mental wellbeing as they and the world experienced new levels of stress and anxiety due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As access to healthcare became limited, students turned to alternative methods of coping, which included cannabis use.

Objective

To determine if an association between cannabis use and self-perceived mental wellbeing during the pandemic among college students exists.

Method

A paired samples t-Test was used to compare self-reported mental wellbeing at different times during the pandemic, a one-way ANOVA to compare self-reported mental health between respondents' cannabis use status, and a Tukey-Kramer post-hoc analysis was used to determine between group significance. All data collected were from participants at a single time point (retrospective self-report during April 2022).

Results

Of 103 self-reported college students, the most significant differences in mental wellbeing were reported prior to and during the pandemic. Consistent significant differences were observed between each of the college student groups derived from those students who entirely avoided cannabis use or cessation of use (highest rating), p = .018, as compared to those who initiated cannabis use prior to and during the pandemic (lowest rating) p = .045. Post pandemic mental wellbeing demonstrated a higher level of mental wellbeing among those who had some exposure to cannabis compared to those who avoided cannabis entirely.

Conclusions

It cannot be concluded that mental wellbeing was lower due to cannabis use. However, it is possible those with lower self-perceived mental wellbeing turned to cannabis use.

Use of the Therapy App Prescinde for Increasing Adherence to Smoking Cessation Treatment

Tobacco use poses major health risks and is a major contributor to causes of death worldwide. Mobile phone-based cessation apps for this substance are gaining popularity, often used as a component of traditional interventions. This study aimed to analyze adherence to an intervention using a mobile phone application (App-therapy Prescinde (v1)) as a function of sociodemographic variables (age, gender, educational level, and profession) as well as the primary activities supported by the app (reducing tobacco or cannabis use and increasing physical exercise). The participants were recruited through the web pages of the Occupational Risk Prevention Service and the Psychology Clinic of the University of Granada during the COVID-19 confinement period. The application's contents include three components (self-report, motivational phrases, and goal setting). Our findings indicate that being male, being aged between 26 and 62, having a high school education, and being unemployed increase the likelihood of adherence to the Prescinde therapy app three months after usage. Our findings highlight the importance of developing new therapeutic approaches and conducting in-depth studies on the factors associated with adherence to tobacco cessation and cannabis cessation treatments via mobile phone applications.

Cannabis and Psychosis

Psychosis and cannabis use may overlap in multiple ways in young people. Research suggests that cannabis use increases risk for having psychotic symptoms, both attenuated (subthreshold) and acute. Cannabis use may also exacerbate psychosis symptoms among young people with underlying psychosis risk and psychotic disorders. Although there are suggestions for treating co-occurring psychosis and cannabis use in young people (e.g., incorporating cannabis use assessment and treatment strategies into specialized early psychosis care), there are many gaps in clinical trial research to support evidence-based treatment of these overlapping concerns.

The impact of recreational cannabis use on neuropsychological function in epilepsy

Cannabis use is associated with neuropsychological impairments in the general population, but little is known about the impact on cognitive function in people with epilepsy who are already at increased risk of difficulties due to the essential comorbidities of the disease. We compared the performance of 42 people with epilepsy (PWE) who reported regular cannabis use with 254 age matched, non-cannabis-using PWE. Patients completed tests of intellectual reserve, memory, language and processing speed. Approximately one in 17 patients (5.9 %) reported current cannabis use. Cannabis use was not associated with epilepsy type. Males were 1.8 times more likely to report cannabis use compared to females. Cannabis use was associated with lower intellectual reserve (Reading IQ: t = 2.8, p < 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.49), reduced encoding of new information (List Learning: t = 3.3, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.56) and enhanced susceptibility to distraction on a subsequent recall task (t = 3.07, p < 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.51. In regression models cannabis use was significantly associated with impairments in learning and recall after controlling for elevated levels of anxiety and depression. Our data indicates that recreational cannabis use in people with epilepsy amplifies deficits in new learning and enhances susceptibility to distraction in the retention of newly learnt material. Recreational cannabis use should be considered when interpreting the significance of these cognitive impairments when they are recorded in a clinical assessment.

Parallel trajectories of vaping and smoking cannabis and their associations with mental and physical well-being among young adults

BACKGROUND

Vaping and smoking are common modes of using cannabis (THC) among young adults, but little is known about how patterns of cannabis vaping and smoking unfold over time or how using one or both types of products may differently affect mental and physical well-being. This study examines parallel processes of cannabis vaping and smoking over 5 years and mental and physical outcomes in a sample of young adults.

METHODS

Annual surveys were conducted between 2016 and 2022 with a mostly California-based cohort of 2428 young adults. Parallel process growth mixture models examined trajectories of past-month frequency of cannabis vaping and smoking from ages 20 - 25. Classes were extracted based on parallel trajectories of vaped and smoked product use. Models assessed differences in self-reported mental (anxiety, depression) and physical (ailments, subjective overall) well-being outcomes in young adulthood across classes, adjusting for demographic characteristics and mental and physical well-being at pre-baseline (average age 19).

RESULTS

Four cannabis vaping/smoking classes emerged: low use of cannabis (84.7%), decreasing smoking, low-moderate vaping (7.1%), stable moderate smoking, decreasing vaping (4.6%), and rapid increasing dual use (3.4%). Classes were similar on physical well-being indicators in young adulthood. The rapid increasing dual use class showed higher anxiety and depressive symptoms compared to other classes.

CONCLUSION

Progression to higher frequency of both vaping and smoking cannabis in young adulthood may contribute to poorer mental well-being compared to other use patterns. Targeted efforts to reduce dual vaping and smoking in young people who use cannabis may be needed.

Challenges and considerations for treating PTSD with medicinal cannabis: the Australian clinician's perspective

INTRODUCTION

Preclinical and experimental research have provided promising evidence that medicinal cannabis may be efficacious in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, implementation of medicinal cannabis into routine clinical therapies may not be straightforward.

AREAS COVERED

In this review, we describe some of the clinical, practical, and safety challenges that must be addressed for cannabis-based treatment of PTSD to be feasible in a real-world setting. These issues are especially prevalent if medicinal cannabis is to be combined with trauma-focused psychotherapy.

EXPERT OPINION

Future consideration of the clinical and practical considerations of cannabis use in PTSD therapy will be essential to both the efficacy and safety of the treatment protocols that are being developed. These issues include dose timing and titration, potential for addiction, product formulation, windows of intervention, and route of administration. In particular, exposure therapy for PTSD involves recall of intense emotions, and the interaction between cannabis use and reliving of trauma memories must be explored in terms of patient safety and impact on therapeutic outcomes.

Self-reported Medicinal Cannabis Use as an Alternative to Prescription and Over-the-counter Medication Use Among US Military Veterans

BACKGROUND

Mental and other physical health concerns and substance use disorder are common and co-occurring events experienced by US veterans. Treatment with medicinal cannabis is a potential alternative to unwanted medication use for veterans, but more clinical and epidemiologic research is needed to understand the risks and benefits.

METHODS

Data were collected from a cross-sectional, self-reported, anonymous survey asking US veterans about their health conditions, medical treatments, demographics, and medicinal cannabis use along with its self-reported effectiveness. In addition to descriptive statistics, logistic regression models were run to examine correlates of the use of cannabis as a substitution for prescription or over-the-counter medications.

FINDINGS

A total of 510 veterans of US military service participated in the survey, which was administered between March 3 and December 31, 2019. The participants reported experiencing a variety of mental and other physical health conditions. Primary health conditions reported included chronic pain (196; 38%), PTSD (131; 26%), anxiety (47; 9%), and depression (26; 5%). Most participants (343; 67%) reported using cannabis daily. Many reported using cannabis to reduce the use of over-the-counter medications (151; 30%) including antidepressants (130; 25%), anti-inflammatories (89; 17%), and other prescription medications. Additionally, 463 veterans (91% of respondents) reported that medical cannabis helped them to experience a greater quality of life and 105 (21%) reported using fewer opioids as a result of their medical cannabis use. Veterans who were Black, who were female, who served in active combat, and who were living with chronic pain were more likely to report a desire to reduce the number of prescription medications they were taking (odds ratios = 2.92, 2.29, 1.79, and 2.30, respectively). Women and individuals who used cannabis daily were more likely to report active use of cannabis to reduce prescription medication use (odds ratios = 3.05 and 2.26).

IMPLICATIONS

Medicinal cannabis use was reported to improve quality of life and reduce unwanted medication use by many of the study participants. The present findings indicate that medicinal cannabis can potentially play a harm-reduction role, helping veterans to use fewer pharmaceutical medications and other substances. Clinicians should be mindful of the potential associations between race, sex, and combat experience and the intentions for and frequency of medicinal cannabis use.

To Weed or Not to Weed: A Systematic Review Exploring the Potential for Cannabis Use in Cardiovascular Disease, Mental Health and Pain Management

Despite its historical reputation as a substance of abuse, cannabis use has increased following decriminalization efforts in the United States. It has historically garnered a bad reputation as a substance of abuse, but paradoxically is associated with an improved perception of well-being. We were interested in positive cardiovascular outcomes, both positive and negative mental health outcomes and impact on physical activity of cannabis, both recreational and medical. Databases included PubMed, ResearchGate, Cochrane, Science.gov and ScienceDirect. We were interested in cardiovascular, mental health and physical health in our search. Data included articles published during or after 2017. Our studies showed no cardiovascular benefits, increased risk of documented cardiovascular events and increased mortality associated with cannabis use. Physical benefits derived were largely in patients with chronic pain. With regards to mental health, the impact of the drug appears to be both positive and negative, with no clear benefits as a first-line agent. Route of administration appears to have an impact on the overall extent of side effects. Overall, medical cannabis appears to pose an almost negligible side effect profile compared to recreational. Our findings suggest that while cannabis use may offer benefits for chronic pain management, it is associated with increased cardiovascular risks. Further, medical cannabis appears to have a more favorable side effect profile compared to recreational use.

Cannabis Use in Patients Seen in an Academic Radiation Oncology Department

PURPOSE

Cannabis use rates are increasing in the United States. Patients with cancer use cannabis for many reasons, even without high-quality supporting data. This study sought to characterize cannabis use among patients seen in radiation oncology in a state that has legalized adult nonmedical use cannabis and to identify key cannabis-related educational topics.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Cannabis history was documented by providers using a structured template at patient visits in an academic radiation oncology practice October 2020 to November 2021. Cannabis use data, including recency/frequency of use, reason, and mode of administration, were summarized, and logistic regression was used to explore associations between patient and disease characteristics and recent cannabis use. A multivariable model employed stepwise variable selection using the Akaike Information Criterion.

RESULTS

Of 3143 patients total, 91 (2.9%) declined to answer cannabis use questions, and 343 (10.9%) endorsed recent use (≤1 month ago), 235 (7.5%) noted nonrecent use (>1 month ago), and 2474 (78.7%) denied history of cannabis use. In multivariable analyses, those ≥50 years old (odds ratio [OR], 0.409; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.294-0.568; P < .001) or with history of prior courses of radiation (OR, 0.748; 95% CI, 0.572-0.979; P = .034) were less likely, and those with a mental health diagnosis not related to substance use (OR, 1.533; 95% CI, 1.171-2.005; P = .002) or who smoked tobacco (OR, 3.003; 95% CI, 2.098-4.299; P < .001) were more likely to endorse recent cannabis use. Patients reported pain, insomnia, and anxiety as the most common reasons for use. Smoking was the most common mode of administration.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients are willing to discuss cannabis use with providers and reported recent cannabis use for a variety of reasons. Younger patients new to oncologic care and those with a history of mental illness or tobacco smoking may benefit most from discussions about cannabis given higher rates of cannabis use in these groups.

Prevalence, perceptions, and patterns of cannabis use among cardiac inpatients at a tertiary care hospital: A cross-sectional survey

Background

Cannabis use may adversely affect cardiovascular health. Patterns of use by cardiac patients are unknown. We evaluated the prevalence, perceptions, and patterns of cannabis use among cardiac inpatients.

Methods

A consecutive cross-section of cardiac inpatients, hospitalized between November 2019 and May 2020, were surveyed in-person or via telephone. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to examine the characteristics of cannabis use.

Results

The prevalence of past-12-month cannabis use was 13.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 11.8%-16.0%). Characteristics independently associated with cannabis use were as follows: age < 64 years (< 44 years, odds ratio [OR] = 3.96 [95% CI: 1.65-9.53]; age 45-64 years, OR = 2.72 [95% CI: 1.65-4.47]); tobacco use in the previous 6 months (OR = 1.91 [95% CI: 1.18-3.07]); having a cannabis smoker in one's primary social group (OR = 4.17 [95% CI: 2.73-6.38]); and a history of a mental health diagnosis (OR = 1.82 [95% CI: 1.19-2.79]). Among those using cannabis, 70.5% reported smoking or vaping it; 47.2% reported daily use. Most did not know the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; 71.6%) or cannabidiol (CBD; 83.3%) content of their cannabis, or the dose of cannabis in their edibles (66.7%). As defined by Canada's Lower Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines, 96.7% of cannabis users reported ≥ 1 higher-risk use behaviour (mean = 2.3, standard deviation = 1.2). Over 60% of patients expressed no intention to quit or reduce cannabis use in the next 6 months.

Conclusions

Cannabis use appears prevalent among cardiac patients. Most users demonstrated higher-risk use behaviours and low intentions to quit. Further work is needed to understand the impacts of cannabis use on the cardiovascular system and to develop guidelines and educational tools relating to lower-risk use, for cardiac patients and providers.

Prevalence of cannabis use in people with psychosis in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Background

There is a high prevalence of cannabis use in patients with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, with comorbid cannabis use in this population being associated with poorer long-term outcomes.

Aim

To determine the prevalence of cannabis use in patients with a schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders.

Setting

The study was conducted at a psychiatric hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

Methods

A review of clinical records of patients admitted to the hospital for the period, June 2018 to June 2020, was conducted.

Results

A total of 370 clinical records were reviewed, of which 48.9% reported current and 51.1% lifetime cannabis use. Being male was significantly associated with current and lifetime cannabis use (OR = 4.90, 95% CI 2.49–9.62 and OR = 6.27, 95% CI 3.28–11.95, respectively). Current alcohol use was also associated with current cannabis use (CCU) (OR = 3.06, 95% CI 1.78–5.28), and age 45 years and older was associated with a lower odds of cannabis use (OR = 0.30, 95% CI 0.09–0.96). Forty-eight per cent of participants were admitted three or more times, and readmission was associated with cannabis use (p = 0.01). There was a lack of association between cannabis use, readmission and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, after controlling for variables such as alcohol use and gender.

Conclusion

Almost 50% of people admitted with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders have comorbid current and lifetime cannabis use. There is a need for dual diagnosis units to address comorbid substance use in people with psychotic disorders, as it leads to poorer outcomes.

Contribution

The study found that there is a high prevalence of cannabis use in people with psychosis. Therefore, it is imperative that we revise treatment programs in our psychiatric units and there is an urgent need for dual diagnosis programs that address substance use in this group of patients.

Influences on the Genetic Relationship Between Cannabis Use and Schizophrenia: The Role of the Externalizing Spectrum

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS

The nature of the robust association between cannabis use and schizophrenia remains undetermined. Plausible hypotheses explaining this relationship include the premise that cannabis use causes schizophrenia, increased liability for schizophrenia increases the risk of cannabis use initiation (eg, self-medication), or the bidirectional causal hypothesis where both factors play a role in the development of the other. Alternatively, factors that confound the relationship between schizophrenia and cannabis use may explain their association. Externalizing behaviors are related to both schizophrenia and cannabis use and may influence their relationship.

STUDY DESIGN

This study aimed to evaluate whether externalizing behaviors influence the genetic relationship between cannabis use and schizophrenia. We conducted a multivariate genome-wide association analysis of 6 externalizing behaviors in order to construct a genetic latent factor of the externalizing spectrum. Genomic structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the influence of externalizing behaviors on the genetic relationship between cannabis use and schizophrenia.

RESULTS

We found that externalizing behaviors partially explained the association between cannabis use and schizophrenia by up to 42%.

CONCLUSIONS

This partial explanation of the association by externalizing behaviors suggests that there may be other unidentified confounding factors, alongside a possible direct association between schizophrenia and cannabis use. Future studies should aim to identify further confounding factors to accurately explain the relationship between cannabis use and schizophrenia.

Copycat and lookalike edible cannabis product packaging in the United States

BACKGROUND

Recent media reports have highlighted copycat/lookalike cannabis edibles as a public health concern. No empirical papers have described this phenomenon.

METHODS

From May 2020-August 2021, we collected photos of cannabis products via an online survey of cannabis users and through personal contacts. Copycat/lookalike products are defined as those that use the same or similar brand name, logo, and/or imagery as an existing commercial non-cannabis counterpart (CNCC). We assessed each package for similarities with its CNCC with respect to brand name, product name, font, color, flavors, and brand/promotional characters. We examined cannabis content indicators including: THC content per package and serving, cannabis leaf symbol, product warnings, cannabis terms, cannabis motifs, activation time, and guidance on edible use.

RESULTS

We collected photos of 731 cannabis products; 267 (36%) were edibles of which 22 (8%) represented 13 unique copycat/lookalike products. Eight used exact brand/product names as existing CNCCs, and five used similar names. Packages copied or imitated a mean of 3.9 of six features and indicated cannabis content with a mean of 4.1 of eight features. Thirteen packages indicated a mean THC content of 459 mg/package. Four reported THC dose per serving, with a mean dose of 47.5 mg.

CONCLUSIONS

Our content analysis highlights three key concerns. First, copycat/lookalike edibles subtly indicate cannabis content while using high fidelity replication or imitation of their CNCC. Second, THC content is high and there were multiple 10 mg THC doses in the equivalent of 1 serving of a CNCC. Third, these products may be attractive to children.

Cannabis Use Disorder: A Behavioral Economic Perspective

Purpose of Review

To explore relations between behavioral economic demand for cannabis and cannabis use disorder (CUD). Prior reviews have focused on drug demand in relation to use outcomes more generally. Complementing and enhancing prior work synthesizing research on cannabis demand, the present review endeavors to determine whether specific demand indices derived from the marijuana purchase task are most reliably related to CUD. Additionally, sociodemographic characteristics of participants in these studies were reviewed to identify whether certain populations were underrepresented in behavioral economic cannabis research.

Recent Findings

Behavioral economic demand is related to CUD; intensity and elasticity of cannabis demand were consistently associated with CUD diagnosis and severity. However, frequently, only select demand indices were assessed or reported, precluding the ability to confirm which indices are superior for denoting CUD risk. Further, most studies enrolled samples that were predominately young adults, Caucasian, and male.

Summary

As CUD becomes more prevalent in the wake of cannabis legalization, identification of robust predictors of CUD risk is paramount. Cannabis demand is consistently associated with CUD; however, individual indices of import in this relationship remain ambiguous. Subsequent research is needed to confirm index-specific markers of disordered cannabis use, and whether links between demand and CUD generalize across diverse populations.
