Magnetic nanoflowers: a hybrid platform for enzyme immobilization

The use of organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers as a support material for enzyme immobilization has gained significant attention in recent years due to their high stability, ease of preparation, and enhanced catalytic activity. However, a major challenge in utilizing these hybrid nanoflowers for enzyme immobilization is the difficulty in handling and separating them due to their low density and high dispersion. To address this issue, magnetic nanoflowers have emerged as a promising alternative enzyme immobilization platform due to their easy separation, structural stability, and ability to enhance catalytic efficiency. This review focuses on different methods for designing magnetic nanoflowers, as well as future research directions. Additionally, it provides examples of enzymes immobilized in the form of magnetic nanoflowers and their applications in environmental remediation, biosensors, and food industries. Finally, the review discusses possible ways to improve the material for enhanced catalytic activity, structural stability, and scalability.

Innovative approach against cancer: Thymoquinone-loaded PHEMA-based magnetic nanoparticles and their effects on MCF-7 breast cancer

Breast cancer is most common cancer among women in the World. Thymoquinone (TQ) exhibits a wide range of biological activities such as anticancer, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, analgesic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, its effectiveness in cancer treatment is hindered by its poor bioavailability, attributed to its limited solubility in water. Hence, novel strategies are required to enhance the bioavailability of TQ, which possesses remarkable anticancer characteristics. The aim of this study is to prepare pHEMA-based magnetic nanoparticles carrying TQ (TQ-MNPs) to improve bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy against breast cancer. For this purpose, TQ-MNPs were synthesized and characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), magnetic field using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The loading capabilities of synthesized magentic nanostructures were evaluated, and release investigations were conducted under experimental conditions that mimic the cellular environment. The findings of the studies indicated that the TQ carrying capacity of MNPs was deemed satisfactory, and the release efficiency was adequate. MNPs and TQ-MNPs showed biocompatibility against HDFa cells. TQ-MNPs showed stronger anti-proliferative activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells compared to free TQ (p < 0.05). TQ-MNPs induced apoptosis in MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-mediated precision magnet therapy plays a crucial role in treating various diseases. This therapeutic strategy compensates for the limitations of low spatial resolution and low focusing of magnetic stimulation, and realizes the goal of wireless teletherapy with precise targeting of focal areas. This paper summarizes the preparation methods of magnetic nanomaterials, the properties of magnetic nanoparticles, the biological effects, and the measurement methods for detecting magnetism; discusses the research progress of precision magnetotherapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, neurological injuries, metabolic disorders, and bone-related disorders, and looks forward to the future development trend of precision magnet therapy.

Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nanosheet Layered Hexagonal Spinel Ferrites for Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorbing

A microwave-induced combustion method has been utilized to prepare nanosized powders of hexagonal spinel ferrites using urea and glycine as fuel. The structural and electromagnetic absorption of these products was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). From the (3,1,1) and (1013) peaks in XRD measurements, it was seen that the samples we synthesized were nanosized spinel and y-phase hexagonal ferrite. In addition, Fourier-transform infrared measurements showed that the synthesized samples had high absorption values showing Fe-O, which is between 878 to 4000 cm-1, and metal-oxygen transitions, which are between the 700 and 2500-3000 cm-1 in the spinel and hexagonal phases. From the scanning electron microscope image of the particles, it is seen that they are homogeneous, filled structures with ∼35-40 nm. It appears from vector network analyzer measurements that the synthesized 1.5 mm thick composite materials have very high electromagnetic absorption properties and that these composites can also be used in electromagnetic interference, Wi-Fi applications, and health.

Characterization of the clinically approved MRI tracer resotran for magnetic particle imaging in a comparison study

Objective.The availability of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with medical approval for human intervention is fundamental to the clinical translation of magnetic particle imaging (MPI). In this work, we thoroughly evaluate and compare the magnetic properties of an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approved tracer to validate its performance for MPI in future human trials.Approach.We analyze whether the recently approved MRI tracer Resotran is suitable for MPI. In addition, we compare Resotran with the previously approved and extensively studied tracer Resovist, with Ferrotran, which is currently in a clinical phase III study, and with the tailored MPI tracer Perimag.Main results.Initial magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS) measurements indicate that Resotran exhibits performance characteristics akin to Resovist, but below Perimag. We provide data on four different tracers using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry measurements, MPS to derive hysteresis, point spread functions, and a serial dilution, as well as system matrix based MPI measurements on a preclinical scanner (Bruker 25/20 FF), including reconstructed images.Significance.Numerous approved MNPs used as tracers in MRI lack the necessary magnetic properties essential for robust signal generation in MPI. The process of obtaining medical approval for dedicated MPI tracers optimized for signal performance is an arduous and costly endeavor, often only justifiable for companies with a well-defined clinical business case. Resotran is an approved tracer that has become available in Europe for MRI. In this work, we study the eligibility of Resotran for MPI in an effort to pave the way for human MPI trials.

Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Systems for the Targeted Treatment of Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The precise evaluation of the extent of an atherosclerotic plaque is essential for forecasting its likelihood of causing health concerns and tracking treatment outcomes. When compared to conventional methods used, nanoparticles offer clear benefits and excellent development opportunities for the detection and characterisation of susceptible atherosclerotic plaques. In this review, we analyse the recent advancements of nanoparticles as theranostics in the management of atherosclerosis, with an emphasis on applications in drug delivery. Furthermore, the main issues that must be resolved in order to advance clinical utility and future developments of NP research are discussed. It is anticipated that medical NPs will develop into complex and advanced next-generation nanobotics that can carry out a variety of functions in the bloodstream.

Unravelling the potential of magnetic nanoparticles: a comprehensive review of design and applications in analytical chemistry

The study of nanoparticles has emerged as a prominent research field, offering a wide range of applications across various disciplines. With their unique physical and chemical properties within the size range of 1-100 nm, nanoparticles have garnered significant attention. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exemplify promising super-magnetic characteristics, especially in the 10-20 nm size range, making them ideal for swift responses to applied magnetic fields. In this comprehensive review, we focus on MNPs suitable for analytical purposes. We investigate and classify them based on their analytical applications, synthesis routes, and overall utility, providing a detailed literature summary. By exploring a diverse range of MNPs, this review offers valuable insights into their potential application in various analytical scenarios.

Tumor-Homing Peptides as Crucial Component of Magnetic-Based Delivery Systems: Recent Developments and Pharmacoeconomical Perspective

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is considered to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and new therapeutic approaches, especially improved novel cancer treatment regimens, are in high demand. Considering that many chemotherapeutic drugs tend to have poor pharmacokinetic profiles, including rapid clearance and limited on-site accumulation, a combined approach with tumor-homing peptide (THP)-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles could lead to remarkable improvements. This is confirmed by an increasing number of papers in this field, showing that the on-target peptide functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles improves their penetration properties and ensures tumor-specific binding, which results in an increased clinical response. This review aims to highlight the potential applications of THPs in combination with magnetic carriers across various fields, including a pharmacoeconomic perspective.

Efficient computational model of the in-flow capturing of magnetic nanoparticles by a cylindrical magnet for cancer nanomedicine

Magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as a promising approach to improving cancer treatment. However, many nanoparticle designs fail in clinical trials due to a lack of understanding of how to overcome the in vivo transport barriers. To address this shortcoming, we develop a computational model aimed at the study of magnetic nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo. In this paper, we present an important building block for this overall goal, namely an efficient computational model of the in-flow capture of magnetic nanoparticles by a cylindrical permanent magnet in an idealized test setup. We use a continuum approach based on the Smoluchowski advection-diffusion equation, combined with a simple approach to consider the capture at an impenetrable boundary, and derive an analytical expression for the magnetic force of a cylindrical magnet of finite length on the nanoparticles. This provides a simple and numerically efficient way to study different magnet configurations and their influence on the nanoparticle distribution in three dimensions. Such an in silico model can increase insight into the underlying physics, help to design prototypes, and serve as a precursor to more complex systems in vivo and in silico.

Optical, thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/ZnMn2O4 nanocomposites films for various optical devices and food packaging applications

This work involves preparing zinc manganite nanoparticles (ZnMn2O4 NPs) using the Sol-gel method. Polymer nanocomposites of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium alginate (NaAlg)- ZnMn2O4 NPs were created using the solution casting technique. The polymer nanocomposites films were made with varying weight percentages of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles. With the addition of nanofiller, the reduced direct and indirect energy band gap values and increased Urbach energy values were discovered in the UV-Vis data. XRD data showed a reduction in crystallinity degree with dopant. ZnMn2O4 NPs had a strong interaction with PVA/NaAlg blend, as confirmed by FTIR. The addition of ZnMn2O4 NPs led to improved thermal stability of the polymer nanocomposites films. Additionally, the nanocomposites films' mechanical characteristics were examined. The loading of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles has been associated with an increasing trend in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, including its toughness, Young's modulus, Tensile strength (Ts), and elongation. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites against fungus and bacteria was studied. Additionally, PVA/NaAlg-ZnMn2O4 nanocomposites films had good antibacterial characteristics against environmental microorganisms such as Gram-positive (G+) S. aureus and Gram-negative(G-) E. coli bacteria as well as fungi C. albicans and A. niger. It was observed that the biodegradability of the nanocomposite films was lower compared to the pure PVA/NaAlg film. Compared to pure film, the water solubility was decreased upon the addition of ZnMn2O4 NPs. After ZnMn2O4 was added to the pure blend, the WVTR decreased. The produced polymer nanocomposites films appear to be a promising material for food packing, according to these results.

Magnetic nanosystem a tool for targeted delivery and diagnostic application: Current challenges and recent advancement

Over the last two decades, researchers have paid more attention to magnetic nanosystems due to their wide application in diverse fields. The metal nanomaterials' antimicrobial and biocidal properties make them an essential nanosystem for biomedical applications. Moreover, the magnetic nanosystems could have also been used for diagnosis and treatment because of their magnetic, optical, and fluorescence properties. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and quantum dots (QDs) are the most widely used magnetic nanosystems prepared by a simple process. By surface modification, researchers have recently been working on conjugating metals like silica, copper, and gold with magnetic nanosystems. This hybridization of the nanosystems modifies the structural characteristics of the nanomaterials and helps to improve their efficacy for targeted drug and gene delivery. The hybridization of metals with various nanomaterials like micelles, cubosomes, liposomes, and polymeric nanomaterials is gaining more interest due to their nanometer size range and nontoxic, biocompatible nature. Moreover, they have good injectability and higher targeting ability by accumulation at the target site by application of an external magnetic field. The present article discussed the magnetic nanosystem in more detail regarding their structure, properties, interaction with the biological system, and diagnostic applications.

Design, synthesis and application of a magnetic H-bond catalyst in the preparation of new nicotinonitriles via cooperative vinylogous anomeric-based oxidation

Herein, we designed and synthesized a new H-bond magnetic catalyst with 2-tosyl-N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)hydrazine-1-carboxamide as a sensitive H-bond donor/acceptor. We created an organic structure with a urea moiety on the magnetic nanoparticles, which can function as a hydrogen bond catalyst. Hydrogen bond catalysts serve as multi-donor/-acceptor sites. Additionally, we utilized magnetic nanoparticles in the production of the target catalyst, giving it the ability to be recycled and easily separated from the reaction medium with an external magnet. We evaluated the catalytic application of Fe3O4@SiO2@tosyl-carboxamide as a new magnetic H-bond catalyst in the synthesis of new nicotinonitrile compounds through a multicomponent reaction under solvent-free and green conditions with high yields (50-73%). We confirmed the structure of Fe3O4@SiO2@tosyl-carboxamide using various techniques. In addition, the structures of the desired nicotinonitriles were confirmed using melting point, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HR-mass spectrometry analysis. The final step of the reaction mechanism was preceded via cooperative vinylogous anomeric-based oxidation (CVABO).

Synthesis, modifications, and applications of iron-based nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are appealing materials as assistant to resolve environmental pollution issues and as recyclable catalysts for the oxidative degradation of resistant contaminants. Moreover, they can significantly influence the advancement of medical applications for imaging, diagnostics, medication administration, and biosensing. On the other hand, due to unique features, excellent biocompatibility, high curie temperatures and low cytotoxicity of the Iron-based nanoparticles, they have received increasing attention in recent years. Using an external magnetic field, in which the ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (FMNPs) in the reaction mixtures can be easily removed, make them more efficient approach than the conventional method for separating the catalyst particles by centrifugation or filtration. Ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (FMNPs) provide various advantages in food processing, environmental issues, pharmaceutical industry, sample preparation, wastewater management, water purification, illness therapy, identification of disease, tissue engineering, and biosensor creation for healthcare monitoring. Modification of FMNPs with the proper functional groups and surface modification techniques play a significant role in boosting their capability. Due to flexibility of FMNPs in functionalization and synthesis, it is possible to make customized FMNPs that can be utilized in variety of applications. This review focuses on synthesis, modifications, and applications of Iron-based nanoparticles.

Manganese Dioxide-Based Nanomaterials for Medical Applications

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanomaterials can react with trace hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce paramagnetic manganese (Mn2+) and oxygen (O2), which can be used for magnetic resonance imaging and alleviate the hypoxic environment of tumors, respectively. MnO2 nanomaterials also can oxidize glutathione (GSH) to produce oxidized glutathione (GSSG) to break the balance of intracellular redox reactions. As a consequence of the sensitivity of the tumor microenvironment to MnO2-based nanomaterials, these materials can be used as multifunctional diagnostic and therapeutic platforms for tumor imaging and treatment. Importantly, when MnO2 nanomaterials are implanted along with other therapeutics, synergetic tumor therapy can be achieved. In addition to tumor treatment, MnO2-based nanomaterials display promising prospects for tissue repair, organ protection, and the treatment of other diseases. Herein, we provide a thorough review of recent progress in the use of MnO2-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications, which may be helpful for the design and clinical translation of next-generation MnO2 nanomaterials.

Combining high energy ball milling and liquid crystal templating method to prepare magnetic ordered mesoporous silica. A physico-chemical investigation

The physico-chemical investigation of superparamagnetic MCM41 like materials prepared by the novel combination of high energy ball milling and a liquid crystal templating method is presented. Structural, morphological, textural, thermal, and preliminary magnetic characterization demonstrated the successful combination of the two synthesis techniques, avoiding the problems associated with the current methods used for the preparation of magnetic ordered mesoporous silica. MCM41 like materials with high specific surface area values (625-720 m2 g-1) and high mesopore volumes in the range 1-0.7 cm3 g-1 were obtained. The ordered mesoporous structure and accessible pores were maintained after the inclusion of increasing amounts of the magnetic component in the silica structure. All the samples showed superparamagnetic behaviour.

Fabrication and Characterization of Montmorillonite Clay/Agar-Based Magnetic Composite and Its Biological and Electrical Conductivity Evaluation

Montmorillonite clay and agar are naturally occurring materials of significant importance in designing biocompatible materials tailored for applications in biotechnology and medicine. The introduction of magnetic properties has the potential to significantly boost their characteristics and expand their applications. In this study, we have successfully synthesized highly intercalated magnetic composites, incorporating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs), montmorillonite clay (MMT), and agar (AG), through a thermo-physicomechanical method. Three samples of MMT-AG with 2, 1.5, and 0.5% MNPs and three sample composites of MNPs-AG with 2, 1, and 0.5% MMT clay are prepared. The synthesized composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, DTA, and FTIR. SEM analysis revealed a uniform dispersion of MNPs and MMT in the composite. The XRD pattern confirmed the presence of MNPs in the composite site. The TGA and DTA results demonstrated improved thermal stability due to the MNP incorporation. FTIR spectra showed all of the constituents of agar, MNPs, and MMT clay. The swelling ratio was observed to range from 835% to 1739%. The swelling study indicated an increased hydrophobicity with the addition of MNPs to the composite. Antibacterial activities revealed a significant inhibition of Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth by ranging from 10 to 19 nm in the composite. The composite also exhibited a considerable antioxidant action, with IC50 values of 7.96, 46.55, and 57.58 μg/mL, and electrical properties just like conductors.

Revolutionizing lymph node metastasis imaging: the role of drug delivery systems and future perspectives

The deployment of imaging examinations has evolved into a robust approach for the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis (LNM). The advancement of technology, coupled with the introduction of innovative imaging drugs, has led to the incorporation of an increasingly diverse array of imaging techniques into clinical practice. Nonetheless, conventional methods of administering imaging agents persist in presenting certain drawbacks and side effects. The employment of controlled drug delivery systems (DDSs) as a conduit for transporting imaging agents offers a promising solution to ameliorate these limitations intrinsic to metastatic lymph node (LN) imaging, thereby augmenting diagnostic precision. Within the scope of this review, we elucidate the historical context of LN imaging and encapsulate the frequently employed DDSs in conjunction with a variety of imaging techniques, specifically for metastatic LN imaging. Moreover, we engage in a discourse on the conceptualization and practical application of fusing diagnosis and treatment by employing DDSs. Finally, we venture into prospective applications of DDSs in the realm of LNM imaging and share our perspective on the potential trajectory of DDS development.

1H Spin-Lattice Relaxation Processes in Solutions of H2N-Fe3O4 Nanoparticles: Insights from NMR Relaxometry

1H spin-lattice relaxation experiments have been performed for water and glycerol/water solutions of H2N-Fe3O4 superparamagnetic nanoparticles (NPs) of about 7 nm diameter. The experiments encompass a broad frequency range covering 3 orders of magnitude, from 10 kHz to 10 MHz (referring to 1H resonance frequency), and have been performed in the temperature range from 298 to 313 K, varying the concentration of the superparamagnetic species. This extensive dataset has been used for twofold purposes. The first one is to serve as a challenge for thorough tests of theoretical models describing nuclear relaxation in solutions of superparamagnetic NPs, depending on their magnetic properties and dynamics of the solvent molecules. The challenge is posed by the wish to reproduce the data in a broad range of magnetic fields (not only at high fields) and by the need to explain the differences in the relaxation scenarios for water and glycerol/water solutions by varying only the solvent parameters. The second purpose is to get insights into the magnetic properties (electronic relaxation properties) of the nanoparticles due to their high applicational potential.

Investigating the efficacy of nasal administration for delivering magnetic nanoparticles into the brain for magnetic particle imaging

This study explored the effectiveness of nasal administration in delivering magnetic nanoparticles into the brain for magnetic particle imaging of target regions. Successful delivery of iron oxide nanoparticles, which serve as contrast agents, to specific sites within the brain is crucial for achieving magnetic particle imaging. Nasal administration has gained attention as a method to bypass the blood-brain barrier and directly deliver therapeutics to the brain. In this study, we investigated surface modification techniques for administering magnetic nanoparticles into the nasal cavity, and provided experimental validation through in vivo studies. By compositing magnetic nanoparticles with gold nanoparticles, we enabled additional surface modification via AuS bonds without compromising their magnetic properties. The migration of the designed PEGylated magnetic nanoparticles into the brain following nasal administration was confirmed by magnetization measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrated the accumulation of these nanoparticles at specific target sites using probe molecules immobilized on the PEG terminus. Thus, the efficacy of delivering magnetic nanoparticles to the brain via nasal administration was demonstrated in this study. The findings of this research are expected to contribute significantly to the realization of magnetic particle imaging of target regions within the brain.

Nanotechnology's frontier in combatting infectious and inflammatory diseases: prevention and treatment

Inflammation-associated diseases encompass a range of infectious diseases and non-infectious inflammatory diseases, which continuously pose one of the most serious threats to human health, attributed to factors such as the emergence of new pathogens, increasing drug resistance, changes in living environments and lifestyles, and the aging population. Despite rapid advancements in mechanistic research and drug development for these diseases, current treatments often have limited efficacy and notable side effects, necessitating the development of more effective and targeted anti-inflammatory therapies. In recent years, the rapid development of nanotechnology has provided crucial technological support for the prevention, treatment, and detection of inflammation-associated diseases. Various types of nanoparticles (NPs) play significant roles, serving as vaccine vehicles to enhance immunogenicity and as drug carriers to improve targeting and bioavailability. NPs can also directly combat pathogens and inflammation. In addition, nanotechnology has facilitated the development of biosensors for pathogen detection and imaging techniques for inflammatory diseases. This review categorizes and characterizes different types of NPs, summarizes their applications in the prevention, treatment, and detection of infectious and inflammatory diseases. It also discusses the challenges associated with clinical translation in this field and explores the latest developments and prospects. In conclusion, nanotechnology opens up new possibilities for the comprehensive management of infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Recent advances in functionalized ferrite nanoparticles: From fundamentals to magnetic hyperthermia cancer therapy

Cancers are fatal diseases that lead to most death of human beings, which urgently require effective treatments methods. Hyperthermia therapy employs magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as heating medium under external alternating magnetic field. Among various MNPs, ferrite nanoparticles (FNPs) have gained significant attention for hyperthermia therapy due to their exceptional magnetic properties, high stability, favorable biological compatibility, and low toxicity. The utilization of FNPs holds immense potential for enhancing the effectiveness of hyperthermia therapy. The main hurdle for hyperthermia treatment includes optimizing the heat generation capacity of FNPs and controlling the local temperature of tumor region. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the magnetic hyperthermia treatment (MHT) of FNPs, which is accomplished by elucidating the underlying mechanism of heat generation and identifying influential factors. Based upon fundamental understanding of hyperthermia of FNPs, valuable insights will be provided for developing efficient nanoplatforms with enhanced accuracy and magnetothermal properties. Additionally, we will also survey current research focuses on modulating FNPs' properties, external conditions for MHT, novel technical methods, and recent clinical findings. Finally, current challenges in MHT with FNPs will be discussed while prospecting future directions.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: A Review on Synthesis, Characterization, Functionalization, and Biomedical Applications

Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are applied in numerous fields, especially in biomedical applications. Since biofluidic samples and biological tissues are nonmagnetic, negligible background signals can interfere with the magnetic signals from MNPs in magnetic biosensing and imaging applications. In addition, the MNPs can be remotely controlled by magnetic fields, which make it possible for magnetic separation and targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, due to the unique dynamic magnetizations of MNPs when subjected to alternating magnetic fields, MNPs are also proposed as a key tool in cancer treatment, an example is magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Due to their distinct surface chemistry, good biocompatibility, and inducible magnetic moments, the material and morphological structure design of MNPs has attracted enormous interest from a variety of scientific domains. Herein, a thorough review of the chemical synthesis strategies of MNPs, the methodologies to modify the MNPs surface for better biocompatibility, the physicochemical characterization techniques for MNPs, as well as some representative applications of MNPs in disease diagnosis and treatment are provided. Further portions of the review go into the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of composite MNPs with core/shell structures as well as a deeper analysis of MNP properties to learn about potential biomedical applications.

Structural and electronic changes in the Ni13@Ag42 nanoparticle under surface oxidation: the role of silver coating

Icosahedral Ni13@Ag42 is a stable nanoparticle formed by a magnetic nickel core surrounded by a silver coating that provides physical protection to the 3d metal cluster as well as antibacterial properties. In this work, we report density functional theoretical calculations to delve into a comprehensive analysis of how surface oxidation impacts the structural, electronic, magnetic, and reactivity properties of this interesting nanoparticle. To elucidate the role played by the silver coating, we compare the results with those found for the bare Ni13 cluster also subjected to surface oxidation. When Ni13 is covered by silver, we find a markedly robust behavior of the magnetic moment of the resulting nanoparticle, which remains nearly constant upon oxidation up to the rates explored, and the same holds for its overall reactivity. The obtained trends are rationalized in terms of the complex interplay between Ni-Ag and Ag-O interactions which impact the relative inter-atomic distances, charge transfer effects, spin polarization and magnetic couplings.

A polymeric iron oxide nanocomplex loaded with sulfasalazine: an approach for inducing ferritinophagy-assisted ferroptosis for anti-cancer therapy

The approach of using ferroptosis to treat cancer has garnered attention due to its promising potential. However, the effectiveness of this therapy is often limited by the inherent redox system in cancer cells and the presence of ferritin as an iron ion storage molecule. To address this issue, we have designed a polymeric iron oxide nanocomplex loaded with sulfasalazine as a ferritinophagy-assisted ferroptosis inducing agent. The nanocomplex is based on a pH-responsive drug releasing platform that enables improved ferroptosis anti-cancer therapy. The nanocomplex was synthesized using polymerized phenylboronic acid decorated with iron oxide and further loaded with sulfasalazine by interacting with polymerized phenylboronic acid. Upon entering cancer cells, the nanocomplex releases sulfasalazine at the lysosomal acidic pH, which causes the complex to degrade into the labile iron ion (Fe2+). This process inhibits the production of GSH and reproduces the labile iron ion by degrading ferritin. As a result, an excess iron ion pool is formed, and the facilitated Fenton reaction induces an improved ferroptosis anti-cancer effect. Moreover, our research has demonstrated that the nanocomplex effectively regresses tumors, thereby representing significant inhibition of tumor growth using in vivo models. We believe that this ferritinophagy-assisted ferroptosis strategy using the nanocomplex provides a promising solution for iron-based anti-cancer therapy.

Iron oxide magnetic aggregates: Aspects of synthesis, computational approaches and applications

Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles have been central to numerous investigations in the past few decades for their use in many applications, such as drug delivery, medical diagnostics, magnetic separation, and material science. However, the properties of single magnetic nanoparticles are sometimes not sufficient to accomplish tasks where a strong magnetic response is required. In light of this, aggregated magnetite nanoparticles have been proposed as an alternative advanced material, which may expand and combine some of the advantages of single magnetic nanoparticles, including superparamagnetism, with an enhanced magnetic moment and increased colloidal stability. This review comprehensively discusses the current literature on aggregates made of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. This review is divided into three sections. First, the current synthetic strategies for magnetite nanoparticle aggregates are discussed, together with the influence of different stabilizers on the primary crystals and the final aggregate size and morphology. The second section is dedicated to computational approaches, such as density functional methods (which permit accurate predictions of electronic and magnetic properties and shed light on the behavior of surfactant molecules on iron oxide surfaces) and molecular dynamics simulations (which provide additional insight into the influence of ligands on the surface chemistry of iron oxide nanocrystals). The last section discusses current and possible future applications of iron oxide magnetic aggregates, including wastewater treatment, water purification, medical applications, and magnetic aggregates for materials displaying structural colors.

Regulation of saturation magnetization of magnetite by doping with group III elements

Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles show promising applications in nanomedicine. However, the saturation magnetization (MS) of Fe3O4 nanoparticles synthesized in laboratory is usually not high enough, which greatly limits their application in drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia. Here, by accurate hybrid density functional computation, the doping behavior of group III elements (including Al, Ga, and In) and the effects on magnetic and electronic properties are well studied. The results show that the doping behavior depends on the concentration of dopants. Interestingly, appropriate Ga and In doping concentrations can significantly increase the MS of Fe3O4. In addition, the doping of group III elements (Al, Ga and In) into Fe3O4 would not induce any defect states in the band gap but slightly increases the band gap. Our results provide a simple and feasible scheme for increasing the MS of magnetite, which is significant for the applications of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia.

Peptide-Hydrogel Nanocomposites for Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, but conventional anticancer drugs have side effects, mainly due to their non-specific distribution in the body in both cancerous and healthy cells. To address this relevant issue and improve the efficiency of anticancer drugs, increasing attention is being devoted to hydrogel drug-delivery systems for different kinds of cancer treatment due to their high biocompatibility and stability, low side effects, and ease of modifications. To improve the therapeutic efficiency and provide multi-functionality, different types of nanoparticles (NPs) can be incorporated within the hydrogels to form smart hydrogel nanocomposites, benefiting the advantages of both counterparts and suitable for advanced anticancer applications. Despite many papers on non-peptide hydrogel nanocomposites, there is limited knowledge about peptide-based nanocomposites, specifically in anti-cancer drug delivery. The aim of this short but comprehensive review is, therefore, to focus attention on the synergies resulting from the combination of NPs with peptide-based hydrogels. This review, which includes a survey of recent advances in this kind of material, does not aim to be an exhaustive review of hydrogel technology, but it instead highlights recent noteworthy publications and discusses novel perspectives to provide valuable insights into the promising synergic combination of peptide hydrogels and NPs for the design of novel anticancer drug delivery systems.

Molecular imaging of tumour-associated pathological biomarkers with smart nanoprobe: From "Seeing" to "Measuring"

Although the extraordinary progress has been made in molecular biology, the prevention of cancer remains arduous. Most solid tumours exhibit both spatial and temporal heterogeneity, which is difficult to be mimicked in vitro. Additionally, the complex biochemical and immune features of tumour microenvironment significantly affect the tumour development. Molecular imaging aims at the exploitation of tumour-associated molecules as specific targets of customized molecular probe, thereby generating image contrast of tumour markers, and offering opportunities to non-invasively evaluate the pathological characteristics of tumours in vivo. Particularly, there are no "standard markers" as control in clinical imaging diagnosis of individuals, so the tumour pathological characteristics-responsive nanoprobe-based quantitative molecular imaging, which is able to visualize and determine the accurate content values of heterogeneous distribution of pathological molecules in solid tumours, can provide criteria for cancer diagnosis. In this context, a variety of "smart" quantitative molecular imaging nanoprobes have been designed, in order to provide feasible approaches to quantitatively visualize the tumour-associated pathological molecules in vivo. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the designs of these nanoprobes, and highlights the state-of-the-art technologies in quantitative imaging of tumour-associated pathological molecules.

An in silico model of the capturing of magnetic nanoparticles in tumour spheroids in the presence of flow

One of the main challenges in improving the efficacy of conventional chemotherapeutic drugs is that they do not reach the cancer cells at sufficiently high doses while at the same time affecting healthy tissue and causing significant side effects and suffering in cancer patients. To overcome this deficiency, magnetic nanoparticles as transporter systems have emerged as a promising approach to achieve more specific tumour targeting. Drug-loaded magnetic nanoparticles can be directed to the target tissue by applying an external magnetic field. However, the magnetic forces exerted on the nanoparticles fall off rapidly with distance, making the tumour targeting challenging, even more so in the presence of flowing blood or interstitial fluid. We therefore present a computational model of the capturing of magnetic nanoparticles in a test setup: our model includes the flow around the tumour, the magnetic forces that guide the nanoparticles, and the transport within the tumour. We show how a model for the transport of magnetic nanoparticles in an external magnetic field can be integrated with a multiphase tumour model based on the theory of porous media. Our approach based on the underlying physical mechanisms can provide crucial insights into mechanisms that cannot be studied conclusively in experimental research alone. Such a computational model enables an efficient and systematic exploration of the nanoparticle design space, first in a controlled test setup and then in more complex in vivo scenarios. As an effective tool for minimising costly trial-and-error design methods, it expedites translation into clinical practice to improve therapeutic outcomes and limit adverse effects for cancer patients.

Biochemical transformations of inorganic nanomedicines in buffers, cell cultures and organisms

The field of nanomedicine is rapidly evolving, with new materials and formulations being reported almost daily. In this respect, inorganic and inorganic-organic composite nanomaterials have gained significant attention. However, the use of new materials in clinical trials and their final approval as drugs has been hampered by several challenges, one of which is the complex and difficult to control nanomaterial chemistry that takes place within the body. Several reviews have summarized investigations on inorganic nanomaterial stability in model body fluids, cell cultures, and organisms, focusing on their degradation as well as the influence of corona formation. However, in addition to these aspects, various chemical reactions of nanomaterials, including phase transformation and/or the formation of new/secondary nanomaterials, have been reported. In this review, we discuss recent advances in our understanding of biochemical transformations of medically relevant inorganic (composite) nanomaterials in environments related to their applications. We provide a refined terminology for the primary reaction mechanisms involved to bridge the gaps between different disciplines involved in this research. Furthermore, we highlight suitable analytical techniques that can be harnessed to explore the described reactions. Finally, we highlight opportunities to utilize them for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and discuss current challenges and research priorities.

Cancer chemotherapy resistance: Mechanisms and recent breakthrough in targeted drug delivery

Conventional chemotherapy, one of the most widely used cancer treatment methods, has serious side effects, and usually results in cancer treatment failure. Drug resistance is one of the primary reasons for this failure. The most significant drawbacks of systemic chemotherapy are rapid clearance from the circulation, the drug's low concentration in the tumor site, and considerable adverse effects outside the tumor. Several ways have been developed to boost neoplasm treatment efficacy and overcome medication resistance. In recent years, targeted drug delivery has become an essential therapeutic application. As more mechanisms of tumor treatment resistance are discovered, nanoparticles (NPs) are designed to target these pathways. Therefore, understanding the limitations and challenges of this technology is critical for nanocarrier evaluation. Nano-drugs have been increasingly employed in medicine, incorporating therapeutic applications for more precise and effective tumor diagnosis, therapy, and targeting. Many benefits of NP-based drug delivery systems in cancer treatment have been proven, including good pharmacokinetics, tumor cell-specific targeting, decreased side effects, and lessened drug resistance. As more mechanisms of tumor treatment resistance are discovered, NPs are designed to target these pathways. At the moment, this innovative technology has the potential to bring fresh insights into cancer therapy. Therefore, understanding the limitations and challenges of this technology is critical for nanocarrier evaluation.

Harnessing inhaled nanoparticles to overcome the pulmonary barrier for respiratory disease therapy

The lack of effective treatments for pulmonary diseases presents a significant global health burden, primarily due to the challenges posed by the pulmonary barrier that hinders drug delivery to the lungs. Inhaled nanomedicines, with their capacity for localized and precise drug delivery to specific pulmonary pathologies through the respiratory route, hold tremendous promise as a solution to these challenges. Nevertheless, the realization of efficient and safe pulmonary drug delivery remains fraught with multifaceted challenges. This review summarizes the delivery barriers associated with major pulmonary diseases, the physicochemical properties and drug formulations affecting these barriers, and emphasizes the design advantages and functional integration of nanomedicine in overcoming pulmonary barriers for efficient and safe local drug delivery. The review also deliberates on established nanocarriers and explores drug formulation strategies rooted in these nanocarriers, thereby furnishing essential guidance for the rational design and implementation of pulmonary nanotherapeutics. Finally, this review cast a forward-looking perspective, contemplating the clinical prospects and challenges inherent in the application of inhaled nanomedicines for respiratory diseases.

Antibacterial properties and osteoblast interactions of microfluidically synthesized chitosan - SPION composite nanoparticles

In this research, a multi-step microfluidic reactor was used to fabricate chitosan - superparamagnetic iron oxide composite nanoparticles (Ch - SPIONs), where composite formation using chitosan was aimed to provide antibacterial property and nanoparticle stability for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Monodispersed Ch - SPIONs had an average particle size of 8.8 ± 1.2 nm with a magnetization value of 32.0 emu/g. Ch - SPIONs could be used as an MRI contrast agent by shortening T2 relaxation parameter of the surrounding environment, as measured on a 3 T MRI scanner. In addition, Ch - SPIONs with concentrations less than 1 g/L promoted bone cell (osteoblast) viability up to 7 days of culture in vitro in the presence of 0.4 T external static magnetic field. These nanoparticles were also tested against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), which are dangerous pathogens that cause infection in tissues and biomedical devices. Upon interaction of Ch - SPIONs with S. aureus and P. aeruginosa at 0.01 g/L concentration, nearly a 2-fold reduction in the number of colonies was observed for both bacteria strains at 48 h of culture. Results cumulatively showed that Ch - SPIONs were potential candidates as a cytocompatible and antibacterial agent that can be targeted to biofilm and imaged using an MRI.

Research progress and future perspectives on electromagnetic wave absorption of fibrous materials

Electromagnetic waves have caused great harm to military safety, high-frequency electronic components, and precision instruments, and so forth, which urgently requires the development of lightweight, high-efficiency, broadband electromagnetic waves (EMW) absorbing materials for protection. As the basic fibrous materials, carbon fibers (CFs) and SiC fibers (SiCf) have been widely applied in EMW absorption due to their intrinsic characteristics of low density, high mechanical properties, high conductivity, and dielectric loss mechanism. Nevertheless, it has remained a great challenge to develop lightweight EMW-absorbing fibrous materials with strong absorption capability and broad frequency range. In this review, the fundamental electromagnetic attenuation mechanisms are firstly introduced. Furthermore, the preparation, structure, morphology, and absorbing performance of CFs and SiCf-based EMW absorbing composites are summarized. In addition, prospective research opportunities are highlighted toward the development of fibrous absorbing materials with the excellent absorption performance.

Facile synthesis of FeCeOx nanoparticles encapsulated carbon nitride catalyst for highly efficient and recyclable synthesis of substituted imidazoles

Herein, we developed a novel composite called FeCeOx@g-C3N4 through a combination of sonication, sintering, and hydrothermal techniques to implement the principles of green chemistry by utilizing reusable nanocomposites in one-pot reactions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the catalyst's structure, composition, and morphology, various characterization methods were employed. These included FT-IR analysis to examine chemical bonds, SEM and TEM imaging to visualize the catalyst's surface and internal structure, TGA to assess thermal stability, EDS for elemental composition analysis, and XRD to determine crystal structure. The FeCeOx@g-C3N4 nanocatalyst demonstrated remarkable efficacy in the one-pot synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted and 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted imidazole. Noteworthy features of this catalyst included high percentage yield, mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, and an efficient and straightforward procedure. Furthermore, the FeCeOx@g-C3N4 composite exhibited excellent recyclability and reusability. It could be recycled and reused up to four times without a significant decline in catalytic activity.

Orthogonal Covalent Entrapment of Cargo into Biodegradable Polymeric Micelles via Native Chemical Ligation

Polymeric micelles (PMs) are promising platforms for enhanced tissue targeting of entrapped therapeutic agents. Strategies to circumvent premature release of entrapped drugs include cross-linking of the micellar core as well as covalent attachment of the drug cargo. The chemistry employed to obtain cross-linked micelles needs to be mild to also allow entrapment of fragile molecules, such as certain peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, and fluorescent dyes. Native chemical ligation (NCL) is a mild bio-orthogonal reaction between a N-terminal cysteine residue and a thioester that proceeds under physiological conditions. Here, we designed a trifunctional cross-linker containing two cysteine residues for the micelle core-cross-linking reaction and an azide residue for ring-strained alkyne conjugation of fluorescent dyes. We applied this approach to thermosensitive methoxypolyethylene glycol-b-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide-lactate (mPEG-b-HPMAmLacn) based block copolymers of a core-cross-linked polymeric micelle (CCPM) system by attaching thioester residues (using ethyl thioglycolate-succinic anhydride, ETSA) for NCL cross-linking with the trifunctional cross-linker under physiological conditions. By use of mild copper-free click chemistry, we coupled fluorescent dyes, Sulfo.Cy5 and BODIPY, to the core via the azide residue present on the cross-linker by triazole ring formation. In addition, we employed a recently developed cycloheptyne strain promoted click reagent (TMTHSI, CliCr) in comparison to the frequently employed cyclooctyne derivative (DBCO), both achieving successful dye entrapment. The size of the resulting CCPMs could be tuned between 50 and 100 nm by varying the molecular weight of the thermosensitive block and ETSA content. In vitro cell experiments showed successful internalization of the dye entrapped CCPMs, which did not affect cell viability up to a polymer concentration of 2 mg/mL in PC3 cells. These fluorescent dye entrapped CCPMs can be applied in diagnostic imaging and the chemistry developed in this study serves as a steppingstone toward covalently entrapped fragile drug compounds with tunable release in CCPMs.

Fortification of Iron Oxide as Sustainable Nanoparticles: An Amalgamation with Magnetic/Photo Responsive Cancer Therapies

Due to their non-toxic function in biological systems, Iron oxide NPs (IO-NPs) are very attractive in biomedical applications. The magnetic properties of IO-NPs enable a variety of biomedical applications. We evaluated the usage of IO-NPs for anticancer effects. This paper lists the applications of IO-NPs in general and the clinical targeting of IO-NPs. The application of IONPs along with photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) is highlighted in this review's explanation for cancer treatment strategies. The review's study shows that IO-NPs play a beneficial role in biological activity because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, simplicity of production, and hybrid NPs forms with IO-NPs. In this review, we have briefly discussed cancer therapy and hyperthermia and NPs used in PTT, PDT, and MHT. IO-NPs have a particular effect on cancer therapy when combined with PTT, PDT, and MHT were the key topics of the review and were covered in depth. The IO-NPs formulations may be uniquely specialized in cancer treatments with PTT, PDT, and MHT, according to this review investigation.

Recent advances in glucose oxidase-based nanocarriers for tumor targeting therapy

Glucose oxidase (GOx) can specifically catalyze the conversion of β-d-glucose into gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the presence of oxygen, making it promising for tumor starvation therapy and oxidative therapy. However, GOx's immunogenicity, poor in vivo stability, short half-life, and potential systemic toxicity, limit its application in cancer therapy. Nanocarriers are capable of improving the pharmacological properties of therapeutic drugs (e.g. stability, circulating half-life, and tumor accumulation) and lower toxicity, hence resolving GOx issues and enhancing its efficacy. Although the application of targeted nanocarriers based on GOx has recently flourished, this field has not yet been reviewed and evaluated. Herein, we initially examined the mechanism of GOx-based nanocarriers for enhanced tumor therapy. Also, we present a comprehensive and up-to-date review that highlights GOx-based nanocarriers for tumor targeting therapy. This review expands on GOx-based nano-targeted combination therapies from both passive and active targeting perspectives, meanwhile, active targeting is further classified into ligand-mediated targeting and physical-mediated targeting. Furthermore, this review also emphasizes the present challenges and promising advancements.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Supramolecular Ureido-Pyrimidinone Coating for Antimicrobial Peptide Delivery

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can kill bacteria by disrupting their cytoplasmic membrane, which reduces the tendency of antibacterial resistance compared to conventional antibiotics. Their possible toxicity to human cells, however, limits their applicability. The combination of magnetically controlled drug delivery and supramolecular engineering can help to reduce the dosage of AMPs, control the delivery, and improve their cytocompatibility. Lasioglossin III (LL) is a natural AMP form bee venom that is highly antimicrobial. Here, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) with a supramolecular ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) coating were investigated as a drug carrier for LL for a controlled delivery to a specific target. Binding to IONs can improve the antimicrobial activity of the peptide. Different transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques showed that the particles have a crystalline iron oxide core with a UPy shell and UPy fibers. Cytocompatibility and internalization experiments were carried out with two different cell types, phagocytic and nonphagocytic cells. The drug carrier system showed good cytocompatibility (>70%) with human kidney cells (HK-2) and concentration-dependent toxicity to macrophagic cells (THP-1). The particles were internalized by both cell types, giving them the potential for effective delivery of AMPs into mammalian cells. By self-assembly, the UPy-coated nanoparticles can bind UPy-functionalized LL (UPy-LL) highly efficiently (99%), leading to a drug loading of 0.68 g g-1. The binding of UPy-LL on the supramolecular nanoparticle system increased its antimicrobial activity against E. coli (MIC 3.53 µM to 1.77 µM) and improved its cytocompatible dosage for HK-2 cells from 5.40 µM to 10.6 µM. The system showed higher cytotoxicity (5.4 µM) to the macrophages. The high drug loading, efficient binding, enhanced antimicrobial behavior, and reduced cytotoxicity makes ION@UPy-NH2 an interesting drug carrier for AMPs. The combination with superparamagnetic IONs allows potential magnetically controlled drug delivery and reduced drug amount of the system to address intracellular infections or improve cancer treatment.

Iron Nanoparticles Open Up New Directions for Promoting Healing in Chronic Wounds in the Context of Bacterial Infection

Metal nanoparticles play an outstanding role in the field of wound healing due to their excellent properties, and the significance of iron, one of the most widely used metals globally, cannot be overlooked. The purpose of this review is to determine the importance of iron nanoparticles in wound-healing dressings. Prolonged, poorly healing wounds may induce infections; wound infections are a major cause of chronic wound formation. The primary components of iron nanoparticles are iron oxide nanoparticles, which promote wound healing by being antibacterial, releasing metal ions, and overcoming bacterial resistance. The diameter of iron oxide nanoparticles typically ranges between 1 and 100 nm. Magnetic nanoparticles with a diameter of less than 30 nm are superparamagnetic and are referred to as superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. This subset of iron oxide nanoparticles can use an external magnetic field for novel functions such as magnetization and functionalization. Iron nanoparticles can serve clinical purposes not only to enhance wound healing through the aforementioned means but also to ameliorate anemia and glucose irregularities, capitalizing on iron's properties. Iron nanoparticles positively impact the healing process of chronic wounds, potentially extending beyond wound management.

Nanoparticle-mediated cancer cell therapy: basic science to clinical applications

Every sixth person in the world dies due to cancer, making it the second leading severe cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. According to WHO, cancer claimed nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. The most common types of cancers reported have been breast (lung, colon and rectum, prostate cases), skin (non-melanoma) and stomach. In addition to surgery, the most widely used traditional types of anti-cancer treatment are radio- and chemotherapy. However, these do not distinguish between normal and malignant cells. Additional treatment methods have evolved over time for early detection and targeted therapy of cancer. However, each method has its limitations and the associated treatment costs are quite high with adverse effects on the quality of life of patients. Use of individual atoms or a cluster of atoms (nanoparticles) can cause a paradigm shift by virtue of providing point of sight sensing and diagnosis of cancer. Nanoparticles (1-100 nm in size) are 1000 times smaller in size than the human cell and endowed with safer relocation capability to attack mechanically and chemically at a precise location which is one avenue that can be used to destroy cancer cells precisely. This review summarises the extant understanding and the work done in this area to pave the way for physicians to accelerate the use of hybrid mode of treatments by leveraging the use of various nanoparticles.

Recent advances of magnetic chitosan hydrogel: Preparation, properties and applications

Magnetic chitosan hydrogels are organic-inorganic composite material with the characteristics of both magnetic materials and natural polysaccharides. Due to its biocompatibility, low toxicity and biodegradability, chitosan, a natural polymer has been widely used for preparing magnetic hydrogels. The addition of magnetic nanoparticles to chitosan hydrogels not only improves their mechanical strength, but also endows them with magnetic thermal effects, targeting capabilities, magnetically-sensitive release characteristics, easy separation and recovery, thus enabling them to be used in various applications including drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetothermal therapy, and adsorption of heavy metals and dyes. In this review, the physical and chemical crosslinking methods of chitosan hydrogels and the methods for binding magnetic nanoparticles in hydrogel networks are first introduced. Subsequently, the properties of magnetic chitosan hydrogels were summarized including mechanical properties, self-healing, pH responsiveness and properties in magnetic fields. Finally, the potential for further technological and applicative advancements of magnetic chitosan hydrogels is discussed.

Size dependence of the surface spin disorder and surface anisotropy constant in ferrite nanoparticles

The magnetic properties of nanoscale magnets are greatly influenced by surface anisotropy. So far, its quantification is based on the examination of the blocking temperature shift within a series of nanoparticles of varying sizes. In this scenario, the surface anisotropy is assumed to be a particle size-independent quantity. However, there is no solid experimental proof to support this simplified picture. On the contrary, our work unravels the size-dependent magnetic morphology and surface anisotropy in highly uniform magnetic nanoparticles using small-angle polarized neutron scattering. We observed that the surface anisotropy constant does not depend on the nanoparticle's size in the range of 3-9 nm. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the surface spins are less prone to polarization with increasing nanoparticle size. Our study thus proves the size dependence of the surface spin disorder and the surface anisotropy constant in fine nanomagnets. These findings open new routes in materials based on a controlled surface spin disorder, which is essential for future applications of nanomagnets in biomedicine and magnonics.

Saline bolus for negative contrast perfusion imaging in magnetic particle imaging

Objective.Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is capable of high temporal resolution measurements of the spatial distribution of magnetic nanoparticles and therefore well suited for perfusion imaging, which is an important tool in medical diagnosis. Perfusion imaging in MPI usually requires a fresh bolus of tracer material to capture the key signal dynamics. Here, we propose a method to decouple the imaging sequence from the injection of additional tracer material, without further increasing the administered iron dose in the body with each image.Approach.A bolus of physiological saline solution without any particles (negative contrast) diminishes the steady-state concentration of a long-circulating tracer during passage. This depression in the measured concentration contributes to the required contrast dynamics. The presence of a long-circulating tracer is therefore a prerequisite to obtain the negative contrast. As a quantitative tracer based imaging method, the signal is linear in the tracer concentration for any location that contains nanoparticles and zero in the surrounding tissue which does not provide any intrinsic signal. After tracer injection, the concentration over time (positive contrast) can be utilized to calculate dynamic diagnostic parameters like perfusion parameters in vessels and organs. Every acquired perfusion image thus requires a new bolus of tracer with a sufficiently large iron dose to be visible above the background.Main results.Perfusion parameters are calculated based on the time response of the proposed negative bolus and compared to a positive bolus. Results from phantom experiments show that normalized signals from positive and negative boli are concurrent and deviations of calculated perfusion maps are low.Significance.Our method opens up the possibility to increase the total monitoring time of a future patient by utilizing a positive-negative contrast sequence, while minimizing the iron dose per acquired image.

Review of the Role of Nanotechnology in Overcoming the Challenges Faced in Oral Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Throughout the world, oral cancer is a common and aggressive malignancy with a high risk of morbidity, mortality, and recurrence. The importance of early detection in cancer prevention and disease treatment cannot be overstated. Conventional therapeutic strategies have minor difficulties but considerable side effects and unfavourable consequences in clinical applications. Hence, there is a requirement for effective ways for early detection and treatment of oral cancer. At present, numerous forms of nanoparticles have piqued researchers' interest as a potentially useful tool for diagnostic probes and medicinal devices. Because of their inherent physicochemical properties and customizable surface modification, they are able to circumvent some of restrictions and accomplish the intended diagnostic and therapeutic impact. Nanotechnology is a unique field that has revolutionised the industry and is paving the way for new treatments for oral cancer. It can help with a better diagnosis with less harmful substances and is setting current guidelines for treatment. The use of nanotechnology in cancer diagnosis, therapy, and care improves clinical practise dramatically. The different types of nanoparticles that have been developed for the diagnosis and therapy of oral cancers will be covered in this study. The difficulties and potential uses of nanoparticles in the treatment and diagnosis of oral cancer are then highlighted. In order to emphasise existing difficulties and potential remedies for oral cancer, a prospective view of the future is also provided.

Recent Advances in the Development of Drug Delivery Applications of Magnetic Nanomaterials

With the predicted rise in the incidence of cancer, there is an ever-growing need for new cancer treatment strategies. Recently, magnetic nanoparticles have stood out as promising nanostructures for imaging and drug delivery systems as they possess unique properties. Moreover, magnetic nanomaterials functionalized with other compounds can lead to multicomponent nanoparticles with innovative structures and synergetic performance. The incorporation of chemotherapeutic drugs or RNA in magnetic drug delivery systems represents a promising alternative that can increase efficiency and reduce the side effects of anticancer therapy. This review presents a critical overview of the recent literature concerning the advancements in the field of magnetic nanoparticles used in drug delivery, with a focus on their classification, characteristics, synthesis and functionalization methods, limitations, and examples of magnetic drug delivery systems incorporating chemotherapeutics or RNA.

Engineered Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles as a Novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging Contrast Agent

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was utilized to functionalize the surface of zinc ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by the hydrothermal process in order to prevent aggregation and improve the biocompatibility of the NPs for the proposed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent. Various spectroscopy techniques were used to examine the NPs' structure, size, morphology, and magnetic properties. The NPs had a cubic spinel structure with an average size of 8 nm. The formations of the spinel ferrite and the PEG coating band at the ranges of 300-600 and 800-2000 cm^-1, respectively, were validated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The NPs were spherical in shape, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with mapping confirmed the presence of zinc, iron, and oxygen in the samples. The results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed an average size of 14 nm and increased stability after PEG coating. The decrease in zeta potential from -24.5 to -36.5 mV confirmed the PEG coating on the surface of the NPs. A high saturation magnetization of ∼50 emu/g, measured by vibration sample magnetometer, indicated the magnetic potential of NPs for biomedical applications. An MTT assay was used to examine the cytotoxicity and viability of human normal skin cells (HSF 1184) exposed to zinc ferrite and PEG@Zn ferrite NPs at various concentrations. After 24 h of treatment, negligible cytotoxicity of PEG-coated NPs was observed at high concentrations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested that PEG@Zn ferrite NPs are a unique and perfectly suited contrast agent for T₂-weighted MRI and can successfully enhance the image contrast.

Recent development of pH-responsive theranostic nanoplatforms for magnetic resonance imaging-guided cancer therapy

The acidic characteristic of the tumor site is one of the most well-known features and provides a series of opportunities for cancer-specific theranostic strategies. In this regard, pH-responsive theranostic nanoplatforms that integrate diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities are highly developed. The fluidity of the tumor microenvironment (TME), with its temporal and spatial heterogeneities, makes noninvasive molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology very desirable for imaging TME constituents and developing MRI-guided theranostic nanoplatforms for tumor-specific treatments. Therefore, various MRI-based theranostic strategies which employ assorted therapeutic modes have been drawn up for more efficient cancer therapy through the raised local concentration of therapeutic agents in pathological tissues. In this review, we summarize the pH-responsive mechanisms of organic components (including polymers, biological molecules, and organosilicas) as well as inorganic components (including metal coordination compounds, metal oxides, and metal salts) of theranostic nanoplatforms. Furthermore, we review the designs and applications of pH-responsive theranostic nanoplatforms for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In addition, the challenges and prospects in developing theranostic nanoplatforms with pH-responsiveness for cancer diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

Chitosan based sorafenib tosylate loaded magnetic nanoparticles: Formulation and in-vitro characterization

Biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles are used for various biomedical applications. This study reported the development of nanoparticles with magnetic properties by embedding magnetite particles in the drug-loaded, crosslinked matrix of chitosan. Sorafenib tosylate-loaded magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by a modified ionic-gelation method. Particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index, and entrapment efficiency of nanoparticles were in the range of 95.6 ± 3.4 nm to 440.9 ± 7.3 nm, 12.8 ± 0.8 mV to 27.3 ± 1.1 mV, 0.289 ± 0.011 to 0.571 ± 0.011, and 54.36 ± 1.26 % to 79.67 ± 1.40 %, respectively. The XRD spectrum of formulation CMP-5 confirmed the amorphous nature of the loaded drug in nanoparticles. TEM image confirmed the spherical shape of nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopic image of formulation CMP-5 indicated a mean surface roughness of 10.3597 nm. The magnetization saturation of formulation CMP-5 was 24.74 emu/g. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that formulation CMP-5's g-Lande's factor was 4.27, which was extremely near to the 4.30 (usual for Fe³⁺ ions). Residual paramagnetic Fe³⁺ ions may be responsible for paramagnetic origin. The data suggests superparamagnetic nature of particles. Formulations released 28.66 ± 1.22 % to 53.24 ± 1.95 % and 70.13 ± 1.72 % to 92.48 ± 1.32 % of the loaded drug after 24 h in pH 6.8 and pH 1.2, respectively. The IC₅₀ value of formulation CMP-5 was 54.75 μg/mL in HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines).
