Abstract
BACKGROUND Hospitalization in the ICU can have long-term physiological and psychological impacts, affecting functional recovery and quality of life of post-ICU patients. Despite systematic reviews showing the impact of music interventions on physiological and psychological outcomes in ICU patients, their applicability and effectiveness in the post-ICU context remain unclear. AIM This review aimed to summarize: a) the types and characteristics of music/sound of interventions used in the rehabilitation of ICU patients, b) evidence on the feasibility, safety and acceptability of sound and music interventions for post ICU survivors, c) the types of post-ICU outcomes explored and the effects of sound and music interventions on any type of outcome in post-ICU survivors, and d) potential mechanisms or theoretical frameworks underlying the effects of sound and music interventions. METHOD We combined current systematic review search methods with a critical narrative approach to synthesize a diverse body of evidence. RESULTS Results showed that music interventions positively affect the psychological well-being and health outcomes of post-ICU patients. Outcomes included improvements in stress, anxiety, mood, movement, sleep, and pain, despite differences in patient populations and intervention design. No safety concerns were reported. The identified theoretical frameworks described physiological, neurobiological and/or psycho-social pathways as key mediators, however, these mechanisms are not completely understood. CONCLUSION Research evidence supports the positive effects of music interventions in post-ICU patients. Further experimental studies are required, especially in adult post-ICU populations to elucidate the characteristics, components, feasibility, and long-term effects of sound/music interventions. IMPLICATION TO PRACTICE 1. Music interventions help in post-ICU patients' recovery benefitting stress, anxiety, PTSD, mood, movement, sleep, and pain. 2. Integrating theoretical frameworks into music interventions can expand outcome measures to include physiological markers alongside psychological ones, improving quality of life. 3. Further rigorous interventional studies are required to identify the effectiveness of sound and music interventions in post-ICU patients.

Abstract
AIM This research was conducted to identify the effect of virtual reality and music on patients' pain, comfort, and vital signs after laparoscopic abdominal surgery. METHODS This study was designed as a prospective randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial. The research population consisted of adult patients who underwent laparoscopic abdominal surgery in surgery clinics. The research sample comprised 225 patients who had laparoscopic abdominal surgery. Experimental groups watched virtual reality videos and listened to music, whereas no intervention was administered to the control group. The research data were evaluated with descriptive statistics, the χ 2 test, the Friedman test, the one-way analysis of variance, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and Tukey's and Dunn's post hoc tests. FINDINGS In the post-test phase after the 2 interventions, the virtual reality and music groups had lower pain and comfort levels than the control group, and this intergroup difference was statistically significant ( P <0.05). Results for vital signs in successively repeated post-test measurements after interventions were in general different, and these differences were statistically significant. Patients in the virtual reality group generally had higher pulse rate, diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature values in successively repeated post-test measurements than patients in other groups ( P <0.05). Patients in the control group generally had higher systolic blood pressure and saturation values in successively repeated post-test measurements than patients in other groups ( P <0.05). CONCLUSION It was discerned that music and the virtual reality practice reduced patients' pain and comfort levels and had positive effects on their vital signs after laparoscopic abdominal surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hospitalization may have a major impact on older patients as it is often a period of psychosocial vulnerability. Music is one of the most described art forms used in healthcare. Applied in clinical settings, it can affect a patients' emotional and psychosocial well-being. Incorporating a wider perspective of health promotion that aims to advance not only physical health, but a patients' overall well-being, is part of a person-centred approach to care. We developed an innovative participatory music practice in which professional musicians and music therapists visited patients at their bedside for 10-15 min in a Dutch and Austrian hospital. This qualitative study explores the added value of live bedside music practice for older hospitalized patients in Austria and the Netherlands. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted between October 2020 and February 2022 with 23 hospitalized patients aged ≥60 years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the music sessions in Austria were facilitated by establishing a live connection between musicians and patients using a tablet. Data were transcribed verbatim and performed qualitative content analysis following the steps of thematic analysis. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) checklist was applied to report data collection, analysis and results. RESULTS Four themes emerged from the data analysis. Participants described the perceived influences of live bedside music in terms of (1) emotional release, (2) positive distraction, (3) alterations in contact and (4) shared humanity. Overall, participants positively valued the live bedside music practice and expressed a desire for its continuation. CONCLUSION This study explores the experiences and the added value of live bedside music for older hospitalized patients. By facilitating distraction and emotional release and enhancing nurse-patient interactions, live bedside music can significantly improve hospital experiences for older patients. Results reveal that live bedside music provides a positive patient experience and can be part of integrative and holistic care for hospitalized older patients. Live bedside music can attend to the emotional needs of older patients which are often under addressed in clinical settings but are crucial for enhancing their well-being.

Abstract
Hospitalization for breast surgery is a distressing experience for women. This study investigated the impact of music therapy (MT), an integrative approach that is characterized by the establishment of a therapeutic relationship between patients and a certified music therapist, through different musical interventions targeted to the specific needs of the patients. The impact of two different MT experiences was compared on anxiety and distressing emotions. METHODS One hundred fifty-one patients during hospitalization for breast surgery were randomly assigned to two music therapy treatment arms: individual/receptive (MTri) vs. group/active-receptive integrated (MTiGrp). Stress, depression, anger, and need for help were measured with the emotion thermometers (ET) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory Y-1 form (STAY-Y1). Data were collected before and after the MT intervention. RESULTS Both types of MT interventions were effective in reducing all the variables: stress, depression, anger, and anxiety (T Student p‹0.01). Patients' perception of help received was correlated with a significant reduction in anxiety and distressing emotions during hospitalization for breast surgery. CONCLUSION Considerations regarding the implementation of MT interventions in clinical practice are discussed. In individual receptive MT, there was a significant decrease in anxiety levels, whereas in the integrated MT group, there was a higher perception of help received and use of inter-individual resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Music therapy can improve mood in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, live music (LM) delivered by professional music therapists is not common in developing countries owing to the shortage of professional music therapists. Thus, in this study, we explored the effects of a multidisciplinary collaborative intervention based on LM on physical and psychological well-being of adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients undergoing HSCT with a quasi-experimental design. METHODS A total of 62 AYA patients agreed to participate and were randomly assigned to the intervention group receiving 4-week LM therapy (n = 31) or control group receiving usual care (n = 31). Depression, salivary cortisol, fatigue, and quality of life were the main outcome indicators measured at baseline, immediately after the intervention, 1 month, and 3 months follow-up. The intervention effects were analyzed by generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Significant decrease in HADS-D scores occurred in the intervention group compared with wait-list controls at immediately after intervention (p < 0.05). Participants in the LM group had greater improvement in quality of life and lower salivary cortisol level than those in the wait-list control group at immediately, 1 month, and 3 months after intervention (p < 0.05). However, the interaction effects of the BFI scores were not significant. CONCLUSIONS LM therapy significantly alleviated depression and salivary cortisol levels as well as improved quality of life of AYA patients undergoing HSCT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Music interventions have been analysed for their use in many surgical specialties, but they have not yet been reviewed in relation to abdominal surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the effect that listening to music perioperatively has on the postoperative pain of abdominal surgery patients. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library and Scopus was undertaken to identify randomised controlled trials comparing a music intervention with standard care, where self-reported postoperative pain was included as an outcome. Study quality was then assessed by the author in conjunction with Robot Reviewer software based on the Cochrane bias methodology, and a meta-analysis was performed using standard mean difference and a random-effects model. RESULTS Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria for review, and eight studies (2217 subjects) had appropriate data reporting to be included in the meta-analysis. Half of the reviewed studies concluded a significant positive impact on postoperative pain and the meta-analysis reinforced this hypothesis (p < 0.001). There was minimal difference in impact between intra and postoperative interventions, or between patient or researcher selected music. CONCLUSIONS This review supports the use of music in the perioperative period for abdominal surgery patients as a low cost adjunct to pharmaceutical pain relief.

Abstract
BACKGROUND and purpose: The use of music is increasingly being recommended for the management of patients' pain and anxiety by healthcare providers. The purpose of this study was to examine registered nurses (RNs)' awareness, acceptability and actual use of music for the management of patients' pain and anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected using a mailed questionnaire. RESULTS RNs were aware of the use of music for managing pain (4.42 ± 2.08, possible range 1-7) and anxiety (4.97 ± 1.85, possible range 1-7), and perceived use of music as low-to-moderately acceptable (mean scores ranging from 1.48 to 3.87, possible range 0-4). Further, 46% (n = 69) of RNs reported using music in their practice. CONCLUSION RNs have a moderate level of awareness and a low-to-moderate level of acceptability of music, with nearly half reporting use of music for managing patients' pain and anxiety in practice.

Abstract
The study was designed as a randomized controlled experimental study with a pretest/posttest and a control group. The study sample comprised 56 seniors who resided in a nursing home. The study data were collected using the "Mini-Mental State Examination," "Identification Form," "General Comfort Questionnaire," and "Beck Anxiety Inventory." While the mean scores obtained from the General Comfort Questionnaire by the participants in the experimental group demonstrated significant differences (p < 0.05), those obtained by the participants in the control group did not (p > 0.05). The mean scores obtained from the Beck Anxiety Inventory by the participants in the experimental group after a 3-week music intervention were significantly higher than their pre-study scores (p < 0.05); however, no significant increase was observed in the control group (p < 0.05).It was determined that music reduced anxiety experienced by the older adults since it improved their comfort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effectiveness of music-based interventions (MI) on cancer patients' anxiety, depression, pain and quality of life (QoL) is a current research theme. MI are highly variable, making it challenging to compare studies. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS To summarize the evidence on MI in cancer patients, 40 studies were reviewed following the PRISMA statement. Studies were included if assessing at least one outcome among anxiety, depression, QoL and pain in patients aged ≥ 18, with an active oncological/onco-haematological diagnosis, participating to any kind of Music Therapy (MT), during/after surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. RESULTS A positive effect of MI on the outcomes measured was supported. Greater reductions of anxiety and depression were observed in breast cancer patients. MI involving patients admitted to a hospital ward were less effective on QoL. CONCLUSION The increasing evidence about MI effectiveness, tolerability, feasibility and appreciation, supports the need of MI implementation in Oncology, Radiotherapy and Surgery wards, and promotion of knowledge among health operators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sounds and acoustic stimuli can have an effect on human beings. In medical care, sounds are often used as parts of therapies, e. g., in different types of music therapies. Also, human speech greatly affects the mental status. Although calming sounds and music are widely established in the medical field, clear evidence for the effect of sounds in palliative care is scare, and data about effects of the human voice in general are still missing. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different voice stimuli on palliative patients. METHODS Two different voice stimuli (one calm, the other turbulent) were presented in a randomized sequence, and physiological parameters (blood pressure, heart frequency, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate) were recorded. RESULTS Twenty patients (14 conscious and 6 unconscious) participated in this study. There was a decrease of heart frequency as well as an increase of oxygen saturation in the group of conscious patients, whereas no significant change of blood pressure or respiratory rate were detected in either group, conscious and unconscious patients. CONCLUSIONS Although our dataset is heterogeneous, it can be concluded that voice stimuli can influence conscious patients. However, in this setting, no effect on unconscious patients was demonstrated. More clinical research on this topic with larger groups and a broader spectrum of parameters is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sound in hospital space has traditionally been considered in negative terms as both intrusive and unwanted, and based mainly on sound levels. However, sound level is only one aspect of the soundscape. There is strong evidence that exploring the positive aspect of sound in a hospital context can evoke positive feelings in both patients and nurses. Music psychology studies have also shown that music intervention in health care can have a positive effect on patient's emotions and recuperating processes. In this way, hospital spaces have the potential to reduce anxiety and stress, and make patients feel comfortable and secure. This paper describes a review of the literature exploring sound perception and its effect on health care. DATA SOURCES AND REVIEW METHODS This review sorted the literature and main issues into themes concerning sound in health care spaces; sound, stress and health; positive soundscape; psychological perspective of music and emotion; music as a complementary medicine for improving health care; contradicting arguments concerning the use of music in health care; and implications for clinical practice. Using Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest Central, MEDLINE, and Google, a literature search on sound levels, sound sources and the impression of a soundscape was conducted. The review focused on the role and use of music on health care in clinical environments. In addition, other pertinent related materials in shaping the understanding of the field were retrieved, scanned and added into this review. RESULTS The result indicated that not all noises give a negative impression within healthcare soundscapes. Listening to soothing music was shown to reduce stress, blood pressure and post-operative trauma when compared to silence. Much of the sound conveys meaningful information that is positive for both patients and nurses, in terms of soft wind, bird twitter, and ocean sounds. CONCLUSIONS Music perception was demonstrated to bring about positive change in patient-reported outcomes such as eliciting positive emotion, and decreasing the levels of stressful conditions. Whilst sound holds both negative and positive aspects of the hospital ecosystem and may be stressful, it also possesses a soothing quality that induces positive feelings in patients. Conceptualizing the nature of sound in the hospital context as a soundscape, rather than merely noise can permit a subtler and socially useful understanding of the role of sound and music in the hospital setting, thereby creating a means for improving the hospital experience for patients and nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effectiveness of music listening on pain, anxiety, and vital signs among patients after thoracic surgery in China. DESIGN AND SETTING A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in the thoracic surgery department of two tertiary hospitals in Wuhan, China. 112 patients were recruited and randomly assigned to either experimental (n=56) or control (n=56) group respectively. INTERVENTION The experimental group received standard care and a 30-min soft music intervention for 3 days, while the control group received only standard care. Measures include pain, anxiety, vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate), patient controlled analgesia, and diclofenac sodium suppository use. RESULTS The experimental group showed statistically significant decrease in pain, anxiety, systolic blood pressure and heart rate over time compared to the control group, but no significant difference were identified in diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, patient controlled analgesia and diclofenac sodium suppository use. CONCLUSION The findings provide further evidence to support the practice of music therapy to reduce postoperative pain and anxiety, and lower systolic blood pressure and heart rate in patients after thoracic surgery in China.
