Abstract
BACKGROUND No studies to date have compared audiologic characteristics in patients with continuous and intermittent tinnitus. The present study classified tinnitus patients into continuous and intermittent groups based on tinnitus duration and compared their audiologic characteristics. METHODS This study enrolled 604 patients with tinnitus from January 2019 to December 2022. Clinical manifestations, PTA results, the frequency and loudness of tinnitus, ABR, DPOAE, and TEOAE tests were compared in patients with continuous and intermittent tinnitus. RESULTS Of the 604 patients, 231 (38.2%) had continuous and 373 (61.8%) had intermittent tinnitus. There were no significant between-group differences in otologic symptoms, tinnitus onomatopoeia. PTA showed that hearing thresholds, except at 125 Hz, were significantly higher in patients with continuous rather than intermittent tinnitus. The loudness of tinnitus was significantly greater in patients with continuous rather than intermittent tinnitus. ABR tests showed that the absolute latency of wave V was significantly longer in continuous than in intermittent tinnitus. Signal-to-noise ratios on TEOAE tests were significantly lower in patients with continuous rather than intermittent tinnitus at all frequencies tested (1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 kHz). Response rates to sound stimuli at all frequencies, except for 1 kHz, were significantly lower on DPOAE tests in patients with continuous rather than intermittent tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS Continuous tinnitus is more common in males, more persistent over time, and is associated with a higher rate of hearing loss. In contrast, intermittent tinnitus is more common in women, appears acutely, and is associated with a relatively lower rate of hearing loss. Based on the findings of the current paper, it seems that audiologic characteristics may differ between patients with continuous and intermittent tinnitus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study investigated the epidemic of tinnitus in college-aged young adults. Our first objective was to identify health conditions associated with tinnitus in young adults. The second objective was to evaluate the predictive utility of some known risk factors. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional design was used to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for tinnitus. SETTING A questionnaire was distributed, reaching out to a large college-aged population. A total of 2258 young adults aged 18-30 years were recruited from April 2021 to February 2022. INTERVENTIONS A questionnaire was administered to investigate the epidemiology of tinnitus in a population of college-aged young adults. RESULTS About 17.7% of young adults reported bothersome tinnitus perception lasting for ≥5 min in the last 12 months. The prevalence of chronic tinnitus (bothersome tinnitus for ≥1 year) and acute tinnitus (bothersome tinnitus for <1 year) was 10.6% and 7.1%, respectively. About 19% of the study sample reported at least one health condition. Individuals reporting head injury, hypertension, heart disease, scarlet fever, and malaria showed significantly higher odds of reporting chronic tinnitus. Meningitis and self-reported hearing loss showed significant associations with bothersome tinnitus. The prevalence of chronic tinnitus was significantly higher in males reporting high noise exposure, a positive history of reoccurring ear infections, European ethnic background, and a positive health history. Risk modeling showed that noise exposure was the most important risk factor for chronic tinnitus, followed by sex, reoccurring ear infections, and a history of any health condition. A positive history of COVID-19 and self-reported severity showed no association with tinnitus. Individuals reporting reoccurring ear infections showed a significantly higher prevalence of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS While young adults with health conditions are at a higher risk of reporting tinnitus, the predictive utility of a positive health history remains relatively low, possibly due to weak associations between health conditions and tinnitus. Noise, male sex, reoccurring ear infections, European ethnicity, and a positive health history revealed higher odds of reporting chronic tinnitus than their counterparts. These risk factors collectively explained about 16% variability in chronic tinnitus, which highlights the need for identifying other risk factors for chronic tinnitus in young adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Subjective tinnitus is defined as the perception of irregular sound at different frequencies. Although the underlying cause of tinnitus is unclear, increased body weight is known to increase tinnitus symptoms. The present study aimed to determine the effects of dietary and physical activity interventions on tinnitus symptoms. METHODS Sixty-three obese subjects with tinnitus aged 20 to 65 years were divided into diet + physical activity (P.A.) (n = 15), diet (n = 16), P.A. (n = 15), and control (n = 17) groups. Dietary records, anthropometric measurements, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of all individuals were recorded and compared at the baseline and at study completion. RESULTS Body weight decreased in the diet + P.A. (-5.9 (3.5) kg), diet (-3.4 (0.9) kg), and P.A. (-2.0 (2.1) kg) groups compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). There was a more significant decrease in tinnitus frequency, tinnitus severity, and VAS scores in individuals with a weight loss of ≥ 5.0% than in those with < 5.0% (p < 0.05). A decrease of 1 kg/m2 in BMI decreased the BDI score by 0.485 units and the THI score by 0.523 units. Step counts were increased in the diet + P.A. (3562.3±739.9) and P.A. (3797.1 ± 1801.1) groups compared to baseline (p < 0.01). Each increase of 1000 steps increased the SF-36 score by 1.592 units and decreased the THI score by 0.750 units (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dietary and physical activity interventions, alone or in combination, alleviated tinnitus symptoms and increased quality of life in individuals with tinnitus. Due to its contribution to obesity prevention and positive effects on tinnitus, organizing dietary and physical activity programs for obese individuals with tinnitus would improve these individuals' quality of life.

Abstract
Dental clinicians are at increased risk for developing tinnitus due to exposure to high levels of occupational noise. This study aimed to determine tinnitus prevalence and associated factors among dental clinicians. Interviews were conducted with 150 randomly selected dental clinicians using a questionnaire. Noise levels were measured at three points of time at the operating area. Tinnitus was reported in 19.33% of the participants. The average noise level was significantly higher among participants with tinnitus compared to those without the condition. More participants complained of intermittent tinnitus and the rest had the constant type, with the latter being significantly more bothersome. The weekly average time of using high-speed handpieces, suction and electric handpieces, age and experience had a significant effect on the presence of tinnitus. Only 2.7% of the participants reported the use of a hearing protection device. Tinnitus is a common finding among dental clinicians especially those with higher levels of occupational noise and more frequent use of noise-generating equipment. Knowledge of tinnitus prevalence aids in realizing the extent of its impact and making informed decisions. These results call for improved awareness of the negative impact of clinically-generated noise and emphasize the importance of preventive measures and periodic audiometry exams.

Abstract
Background Chronic tinnitus has a lot impact on the quality of life of person by affecting his/ her physical health, occupational health and social relations. It can lead to sleep interference, cognitive difficulties, lack of concentration, anxiety, frustration, anger and depression. The present study showed the severity and impact of tinnitus on quality of life of subjects with or without hearing loss using tinnitus functional index (TFI). Methods Subjects with history of tinnitus with or without hearing loss including informed consent, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry (PTA) were done. Grading of tinnitus was done by using tinnitus functional index score. Results The mean age of participants were 50.20 ± 4.2 years and male to female ratio were found to be 1.05:1. On PTA, 122 participants had hearing loss and 28 had no hearing loss. 49 patients had mild TFI score, 85 had moderate TFI score and 16 had severe hearing loss. The difference in the severity of tinnitus using TFI between normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss individual was statistically significant. On the other hand, the severity of tinnitus and degree of hearing loss were also found to be statistically significant with p value < 0.0001 chi. Sq = 77.39. This shows that with increase in increase in hearing loss there is increase in TFI sore. Conclusion Tinnitus has a negative impact on the quality of life like pshycological, emotional and physical effects. The effects of tinnitus is more in those with co-existing hearing loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Whether tinnitus is associated with pre-existing hypertension remains uncertain. This study explored the association between tinnitus and pre-existing hypertension. METHODS We obtained data on a retrospective cohort of 542 884 cases ≥18 years old with a first-time tinnitus diagnosis from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We used propensity-score matching to select 542 884 matched controls and performed multiple logistic regression analyses to estimate the adjusted odds of prior hypertension among patients with tinnitus versus controls. RESULTS Bivariate analysis showed no significant difference in the prevalence of prior hypertension between the tinnitus and no-tinnitus groups (35.58% vs 35.5%, P = .617). Univariable logistic regression analysis confirmed the bivariate analysis finding, unadjusted odds of prior hypertension among the tinnitus group relative to controls, 1.002, 95% CI: 0.994-1.010, P = .617). After adjusting for age, sex, monthly income, geographic location and urbanization level, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hearing loss, obesity, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol abuse, nicotine dependence, anxiety disorder, depressive disorder and idiopathic intracranial hypertension, the odds of prior hypertension were similar among the tinnitus and no-tinnitus groups (OR = 1.006, 95% CI: 0.997-1.016, P = .178). CONCLUSIONS Our population-based study found no evidence for an association between tinnitus and pre-existing hypertension.

Abstract
Introduction
Working conditions can contribute to the development of lifestyle-related diseases among teachers, including obesity and tinnitus. Describing tinnitus in relation to characteristics and comorbidities can help the treatment and prognosis of teachers affected by this symptom.
Objective
To verify a possible association between tinnitus complaint and body mass index (BMI) in teachers.
Methods
Cross-sectional study with a sample of teachers who responded to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and to the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). The BMI (kg/m2) was calculated based on self-reported body weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters squared). Nonparametric statistics were applied adopting a significance level < 0.05
Results
A total of 83 teachers were assessed, with a mean age 48 ± 9.7 years old; 63.9% (
n
= 53) were females; 44.6% were eutrophic (
n
= 37), and 16.9% (
n
= 14) were obese. Of the total, 19.3% (
n
= 16) reported tinnitus. No differences were found between the groups and BMI (
p
> 0.05), although there was a significant difference between the Tinnitus and No Tinnitus groups for age (
p
< 0.001). The chi-squared test showed an association between age group and tinnitus (
p
< 0.028); those with tinnitus were in the 49 to 65 years old age group. In addition, there was a moderate correlation between tinnitus parameters (VAS; THI-Functional; THI-Total) and BMI.
Conclusion
There was a moderate correlation between tinnitus parameters and BMI indicating that, as the BMI increased, so did the impact of tinnitus in the lives of the teachers. Body mass index should be considered a factor in tinnitus assessment and rehabilitation process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Subjective tinnitus is the most common and manifest auditory symptom of an existing pathology in the auditory system. Although the effect of obesity on tinnitus is still uncertain, it is known that increased fat tissue increases the severity and symptoms of tinnitus. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of weight loss through diet and physical activity on tinnitus. METHODS Forty-six obese subjects diagnosed with tinnitus were randomized into the diet + physical activity (PA) (n = 13), diet (n = 16) and the control groups (n = 17). The anthropometric measurements, tinnitus severity scores, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) scores and short form quality of life (SF-36) scores of the individuals were recorded and compared at the beginning and at the end of the study. RESULTS In the diet + PA and diet groups; body weight (diet + PA:-6.5 ± 2.6; diet: -4.1 ± 1) tinnitus severity (diet + PA:-11.0 ± 7.0; diet: -9.0 ± 8.7) and THI scores (diet + FA:-15.0 ± 9.5; diet: -14.0 ± 10.0) significantly decreased compared to the control group (p < 0.01). This decline was more in those with weight loss of ≥5.0% than those with <5.0%. SF-36 score was significantly increased in the diet + PA and diet groups (respectively 10.0 ± 5.5 and 6.0 ± 2.7) compared to the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Diet and physical activity intervention ameliorated the tinnitus severity and quality of life in obese patients with tinnitus. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease in its own right. A number of medical conditions are known to increase the risk of developing tinnitus. Most known risk factors are otological or neurological, but general health and lifestyle can also precipitate the condition. Understanding these modifiable risk factors can help to identify vulnerable groups and can inform preventive actions to reduce likelihood of developing tinnitus. Smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI) and caffeine intake are all lifestyle risk factors hypothesized to be related to tinnitus. Nonetheless, research findings in support of those relationships are somewhat mixed. METHODS A systematic review was conducted to identify all relevant studies on the specific risk factors. Findings were summarized using a narrative synthesis and meta-analysis, where possible. RESULTS Overall 384 studies were included, mostly using cross-sectional designs. Findings indicated significantly increased risk of tinnitus among current (based on 26 studies) and ever smokers (based on 16 studies) and among obese people (based on seven studies), but no effect of alcohol consumption (based on 11 studies). With respect to caffeine intake or coffee drinking, only three studies examined this risk factor and so we were unable to draw conclusions. CONCLUSION Our results contribute to quantifying the relationship between tinnitus and specific lifestyle-related risk factors, and we highlight some of the gaps and inconsistencies across published studies.

Abstract
Objectives To document the frequency of occurrence and types of symptoms experienced in the contralateral ear in patients with unilateral physical non-explosive (UPN) ear trauma and to compare the audiometric and tympanometric parameters between asymptomatic and symptomatic contralateral ears. Design Prospective analytical clinical study Setting: Specialized (Ear, Nose, and Throat) clinic of a tertiary health institution. Participants: Patients with UPN ear trauma who presented within the first week of the incident. Main outcome measures: Otologic symptoms in the contralateral ear in UPN ear trauma. Results Eighteen out of 53 patients (34.0%) experienced symptoms in the contralateral ear. The symptoms were tinnitus in 77.8% (14/18), hearing loss in 66.7% (12/18), and ear blockage in 27.8% (5/18). There was hearing loss in 38/53 (71.7%) of contralateral ears. Hearing loss type and PTAv at the low frequencies were not significantly different (p=0.142), but other audiometric parameters were significantly different between asymptomatic and symptomatic contralateral ears (p<0.05 in all). Type C tympanogram was more prominent in the symptomatic contralateral ear. There was a statistically-significant difference in the type of tympanogram between the two categories of patients (p=0.018). There was no difference in acoustic reflex between the two categories of patients (p=0.095). Conclusions The contralateral ear may be affected in up to one-third of patients with UPN ear trauma, and experience otologic symptoms similar to those of the traumatized ears. Audiologic and audiometric parameters were abnormal in most of the contralateral ears. The two ears must be assessed thoroughly in cases of UPN ear trauma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tinnitus is a subjective auditory symptom usually associated with a sound, even in the absence of external sound sources. Its diagnosis is complex, and some of the forms of measurement alone or in combination, include self-assessment questionnaires, such as the tinnitus handicap inventory, the visual analog scale and/or pitch and loudness matching. OBJECTIVE To analyze the correlation among three tinnitus measurement methods: tinnitus handicap inventory, visual analog scale and pitch and loudness matching. METHODS The study consisted of 148 patients complaining of chronic tinnitus. An otorhinolaryngological evaluation, anamnesis directed to tinnitus, audiometry (pure tone and speech), imitanciometry, tinnitus handicap inventory, visual analog scale, and pitch and loudness matching were performed. The study was registered in the Ethics Committee of the Institution with no. 0129/12. RESULTS Regarding the frequency of tinnitus handicap inventory responses, a higher occurrence of the mild degree was observed. An average of 6 points was observed on the visual analog scale. The mean loudness matching in the right ear was 20dBNS, and in the left ear was 17dBNS. As for the type of stimulus, the most found was continuous pure tone. The frequency of the pitch sensation was 6000Hz in the largest number of cases. Regarding the measures of tinnitus handicap inventory and the visual analogical scale, a significant correlation was observed, and as one value increases the other also increases. Pitch and loudness matching and the visual analogical scale results are also significant. CONCLUSION There was a significant correlation between the values measured by the tinnitus handicap inventory, visual analogical scale (annoyance) and loudness matching in the evaluation of tinnitus. The selection of any one of the three evaluative methods for tinnitus investigation provides different dimensions of the tinnitus and complements the others.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc plays a vital antioxidant role in human metabolism. Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation between noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and oxidative injury; however, no investigation has focused specifically on the subgroup of NIHL associated tinnitus patients. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of zinc supplementation in treating NIHL associated tinnitus. METHODS Twenty patients with tinnitus and a typical NIHL audiogram (38 ears) were included in this study. Another 20 healthy subjects were used as the control group. A full medical history assessment was performed, and each subject underwent an otoscopic examination, basic audiologic evaluation, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), tinnitus-match testing, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and serum zinc level analyses. After 2 months of treatment with zinc, all tests were repeated. RESULTS There was a significant difference between pretreatment and post-treatment within the tinnitus group (73.6 vs. 84.6 μg/dl). The pre- and post-treatment difference in serum zinc was significantly higher in the young group (≦50 years) compared to the old group (19.4 ± 11.4 vs. 2.6 ± 9.2 μg/dl, respectively; p = 0.002). There were no statistically significant differences in hearing thresholds, speech reception thresholds, or tinnitus frequency and loudness results before and after treatment. In addition, 17 patients (85%) showed statistically significant improvement of THI-total scores post-treatment, from 38.3 to 30 (p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS Zinc oral supplementation elevated serum zinc levels, especially in younger patients. THI scores improved significantly following zinc treatment in patients with NIHL associated tinnitus. However, no improvements in objective hearing parameters were observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the epidemiological association of smoking status and tinnitus with a systematic review and meta-analysis and to estimate the population attributable risk in Germany. DATA SOURCES A systematic literature search in PubMed and ISI-Web of Science Core Collection resulted in 1026 articles that were indexed until 15 September 2015. Additionally, proceedings of the international tinnitus seminars and reference lists of relevant articles were screened. STUDY SELECTION Two reviewers searched independently for epidemiological studies. Tinnitus as a manifestation of tumours, vascular malformations, specific syndromes or as a consequence of surgical and medical treatment was not considered. Moreover, studies conducted among patients of ear, nose and throat clinics were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION If only raw data were provided, effect sizes were calculated. Further unpublished data were received by corresponding authors. DATA SYNTHESIS Data of 20 studies were pooled. Current smoking (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.35), former smoking (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.26) and ever smoking (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.30) were significantly associated with tinnitus. Moreover, sensitivity analyses for severe tinnitus (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.58) and for studies of superior quality (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.29) showed increased risks. According to this, the population attributable risk estimate in Germany is 3.5%. CONCLUSION There is sufficient evidence that smoking is associated with tinnitus. As the review mainly consists of cross-sectional studies, the observed correlation does not give evidence of a causal relationship. Due to the impact of various confounders, further research is needed to provide more evidence on the strength of association and causal relationships.

Abstract
Sensory abilities decline with age. More than 5% of the world's population, approximately 360 million people, have disabling hearing loss. In adults, disabling hearing loss is defined by thresholds greater than 40 dBHL in the better hearing ear.Hearing disability is an important issue in geriatric medicine because it is associated with numerous health issues, including accelerated cognitive decline, depression, increased risk of dementia, poorer balance, falls, hospitalizations, and early mortality. There are also social implications, such as reduced communication function, social isolation, loss of autonomy, impaired driving ability, and financial decline. Furthermore, the onset of hearing loss is gradual and subtle, first affecting the detection of high-pitched sounds and with difficulty understanding speech in noisy but not in quiet environments. Consequently, delays in recognizing and seeking help for hearing difficulties are common. Age-related hearing loss has no known cure, and technologies (hearing aids, cochlear implants, and assistive devices) improve thresholds but do not restore hearing to normal. Therefore, health care for persons with hearing loss and people within their communication circles requires education and counseling (e.g., increasing knowledge, changing attitudes, and reducing stigma), behavior change (e.g., adapting communication strategies), and environmental modifications (e.g., reducing noise). In this article, we consider the causes, consequences, and magnitude of hearing loss from a life-course perspective. We examine the concept of "hearing health," how to achieve it, and implications for policy and practice.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: investigar o efeito supressor das emissões otoacústicas por estímulos transientes em indivíduos com queixa zumbido e audiometria normal e analisar sua relação com as variáveis idade, sexo, lateralidade do zumbido e grau de incômodo. Métodos: foram avaliados 60 sujeitos, 14 do gênero masculino e 46 do gênero feminino, entre 20 e 59 anos de idade, sendo 30 com queixa de zumbido (grupo experimental) e 30 sem zumbido (grupo controle). Foi realizada a pesquisa da supressão das emissões otoacústicas por estímulos transientes, para ruído branco de 50 dBNA, na condição contralateral nas bandas de frequência de 700, 1000, 1400, 2000, 2800 and 4000Hz. Resultado: no grupo experimental, a supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes média variou de 2,14 a 4,38. No grupo controle o valor médio da supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes variou de 2,27 a 4,88. Conclusão: os valores de supressão das emissões otoacústicas foram semelhantes nos indivíduos com e sem zumbido, embora o grupo com o sintoma tenha tido resultados menores, sugerindo pior desempenho do Complexo Olivar Superior.

Abstract
Hypertension has been suggested to be one possible risk factor of tinnitus, but the association between hypertension and tinnitus remains uncertain. The authors performed a meta-analysis of the existing studies on the association between hypertension and tinnitus. We performed literature search of studies using SinoMed, CNKI, WanFang, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Studies reported the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) (or provided sufficient information for calculation) of the association between hypertension and tinnitus were included. A total of 19 eligible studies with 20 effect estimates were used in this study. They included 63,154 participants with age ranging from 14 to 92. The pooled OR, which was pooled using a random effects model, was 1.37 (95% CI: 1.16 to 1.62). There was no evidence of publication bias (p = 0.11 for Begg's test, p = 0.96 for Egger's test). By meta-regression, we found that study design may be one possible factor of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis found that the result was stable. This study suggests that hypertension might be one risk factor of tinnitus, and hypertension prevention and control might be helpful in preventing tinnitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Presbycusis is the most common sensory impairment associated with ageing and it presents with variability of symptoms. Physicians need to recognize early clinical and audiometric signs of presbycusis in order to render adequate and quality care to patients and reduce associated morbidities. OBJECTIVE To characterize the clinical modes of presentation and the typical audiometric tracings among patients with presbycusis. METHODS This descriptive, prospective hospital-based study was conducted in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic of Olabisi Ona hing Hospital, (OOUTH) Sagamu, Nigeria. Patients with clinical diagnosis of presbycusis confirmed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) on diagnostic audiometry were administered with questionnaires. Information obtained was analyzed using SPSS statistical package version 17.0 and presented in descriptive forms as percentages, means and graphs. RESULTS Sixty-nine patients were diagnosed with presbycusis (M:F =1.6:1). Modal age group was 71-80 years. Hearing loss 88.4%, tinnitus 79.7% and vertigo 33.3% were the major symptoms on presentation. The average duration of symptoms before presentation was 2.6 years. There was positive history of ototoxic drugs usage in 24.6 %, family history in 11.6 %, hypertension in 34.8% and osteoarthritis in 13.0%. The most common type of audiometric pattern was strial. Hearing losses increased with age both at the speech and at the higher frequencies of sounds. CONCLUSIONS We found hearing impairment affected both speech and higher frequencies and the strial type of audiometric pattern was most common. The need for screening for hearing impairment from early middle age in symptomatic individuals is emphasized.
