Abstract
BACKGROUND The therapeutic relationship serves as a cornerstone in psychiatric mental health nursing practice, providing a basis for implementing various interventions. AIMS This study aimed to explore the perspectives of psychiatric mental health nurses regarding factors that facilitate and impede the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. METHODS A descriptive study was conducted among psychiatric mental health nurses employed at two community psychiatric hospitals in the northeast area of the United States. A list of facilitators and barriers was developed based on an extensive literature review and subsequently validated by three experts in the field of psychiatric mental health nursing. Participants rated these factors on a 10-point scale. RESULTS The study included 74 registered nurses from two psychiatric hospitals, yielding a 24% response rate. The highest-ranked facilitator was awareness that the relationship enables collaborative goal setting with patients. The most significant barrier was insufficient time due to administrative tasks. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the importance of understanding facilitators and barriers in the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. Replicating the study nationally on a larger scale among psychiatric mental health nurses is recommended.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is a lack of distinct and measurable outcomes in psychiatric and/or mental health nursing which negatively impacts guiding clinical practice, assessing evidence-based nursing interventions, ensuring future-proof nursing education and establishing visibility as a profession and discipline. Psychiatric and/or mental health nursing struggle to demonstrate patient-reported outcomes to assess the effectiveness of their practice. A systematic review that summarising patient-reported outcomes, associated factors, measured nursing care/interventions and used measurement scales of psychiatric and/or mental health nursing in the adult population in acute, intensive and forensic psychiatric wards in hospitals will capture important information on how care can be improved by better understanding what matters and what is important to patients themselves. This review can contribute to the design, planning, delivery and assessment of the quality of current and future nursing care METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol follows the Cochrane methodological guidance on systematic reviews of interventions and The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol. The search strategy will be identified by consultations with clinical and methodological experts and by exploring the literature. The databases Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, APA PsychARTICLES, Web of Science and Scopus will be searched for all published studies. Studies will be screened and selected with criteria described in the population, intervention, control and outcomes format after a pilot test by two researchers. Studies will be screened in two stages: (1) title and abstract screening and (2) full-text screening. Data extraction and the quality assessment based on the Johanna Briggs Institute guidelines will be conducted by two researchers. Data will be presented in a narrative synthesis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval is needed since all data are already publicly accessible. The results of this work will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Abstract
Mental health nurses undertake difficult and complex roles. Therapeutic relationships and engagement between mental health nurses and people experiencing severe mental ill-health provide the core purpose and rationale for such mental health care. These relationships are influenced by factors outside of frontline mental health nurses control. They are difficult to define or describe with clarity, have limited 'quantitative' evidence of effectiveness and are frequently not experienced as therapeutic. This paper presents some initial ideas regarding 'everyday ordinariness' using psychologist Daniel Kahneman's two systems of thinking as a focus for understanding and potentially improving mental health nurse practice, and therapeutic relationships and engagement.

Abstract
Assessing acuity is deemed essential to staffing in intensive care nursing; however, it has not received sufficient attention in inpatient psychiatry, where acuity can fluctuate greatly within shifts. Staffing and admission decisions rely on the accuracy of this information. The current mixed methods study surveyed nurses from two hospitals within the same hospital system: one using an acuity tool and one naïve to acuity tools. The survey was followed by a focus group on the specific factors influencing acuity and nurses' assessment of needs. Results suggest that the current tool is not satisfactory for nurses who use it to help with staffing or admission decisions and it is not user-friendly. Most nurses from both hospitals indicated they would prefer an electronic version with automated features reflecting up-to-date patient and unit acuity that would assist in interprofessional collaborative admissions decisions and staffing. Abstract
WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN?: The nurse-patient relationship in mental health care is an important focus of mental health nursing theories and research. There is limited evidence about which factors influence nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. This hinders the development, planning, delivering, and quality assurance of the nurse-patient relationship in nursing practice and nursing education. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: To our best knowledge, this is the first study to examine associations between nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and a range of patient characteristics and relationship-contextual factors. In this study, we found that gender, age, hospital characteristics, nurse availability when needed, nurse contact, and nurse stimulation were associated with the scores on the nurse-sensitive patient outcome scale. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Having insight into the factors associated with nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship can help nurses, nursing students, nursing management and also patients to enhance the nurse-patient relationship, trying to influence outcomes of nursing care. ABSTRACT: Introduction The lack of evidence on patient characteristics and relational-contextual factors influencing nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of a nurse-patient relationship is a possible threat to the quality and education of the nurse-patient relationship. Aim To measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and to explore the associations between nurse-sensitive patient outcomes and a range of patient characteristics and relational-contextual factors. Method In a multicenter cross-sectional study, 340 inpatients from 30 units in five psychiatric hospitals completed the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome Scale. Descriptive, univariate and Linear Mixed Model analyses were conducted. Results Overall, patient-reported outcomes were moderate to good. Female participants, nurse availability when needed, more nurse contact and nurse stimulation were associated with higher outcomes. Age differences were observed for some of the outcomes. Outcomes also varied across hospitals but were not related to the number of times patients were hospitalized or to their current length of stay in the hospital. Discussion The results may help nurses to become more sensitive and responsive to factors associated with nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. Implications The nurse-sensitive results can support nurses in designing future nurse-patient relationships.

Abstract
There is currently a growing understanding of child mental health. However, with little attention and investment from decision-makers, the prevalence of child mental health challenges shows no signs of diminishing. Psychiatric nursing is a process in which the major knowledge and skills dealing with the interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics of human beings are practised. These nurses have to cope with this demand in a scant clinical child psychiatric environment. An exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design was used to postulate the coping mechanism of these nurses in a clinical child psychiatric environment. This study comprised psychiatric nurses, and data were collected through focused group interviews. The findings emphasised the importance of clinical support to enhance quality nursing care and adjustment related to the demands on psychiatric nurses to participate fully in the service. Conclusion: Child and mental health services ought to enable nurses to better deal with the service demands and quality of psychiatric health care. An increased understanding of child mental health challenges is needed so that nurses' roles and functions in child psychiatric practice can be defined. Effective management and support ought to enable psychiatric nurses and health care teams to make decisions that support international development targets.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Humanizing the world of health is a complex process that includes all the dimensions of the person. When a person has from a mental illness, the humanization of care becomes more important, as the disorder itself prevents the person to participate in their health process, even when showing self-harm or aggressive behaviours. These situations jointly with other factors related with professionals (insufficient ratio, inadequate treatment or lack of training) may cause the patient admitted to the acute psychiatric hospitalization unit to require the use of restrictive measures (involuntary admissions, mechanical restraints or forced administration of medication). WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: We identify the relevance of the perception the patient and family have regarding the care received, as well as the relevance of factors related to the professionals, among which the attitude, the staff ratio, the nursing time of direct dedication, and the therapeutic environment and safety of the patient and the professionals. All patients must be treated with dignity, respect, regardless of the aggressive manifestations caused by their pathology. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: A greater understanding of the care offered to admitted people affected by a mental disorder, their families and professionals who care for them in acute mental health units, giving greater importance to "caring" and not exclusively to "curing." ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Humanization in Mental Health refers to give the same relevance to the clinical needs and to the social, emotional and psychological needs. AIM To identify the published knowledge on current care models related to the humanization of care in acute psychiatric units. METHOD Scoping review based on the methodological model of Arksey and O'Malley, and PRISMA methodology. Database searches (Pubmed, Cinahl, Virtual Library, Cuiden, Academic Google and PsycInfo) with the terms: "Humanization," "Hospitals Psychiatric," "Emergency Psychiatric," "Psychiatric Service" and "Psychiatric intensive care units." RESULTS Twenty-two articles met the inclusion criteria. Four thematic units were identified: aspects related to (i) patient perceptions; (ii) Government policies and hospitality organizational culture; (iii) external factors such as the environment, family or associations; and (iv) safety and security. DISCUSSION Only one of the articles mentions the concept analysed, although all of them contribute with key aspects of healthcare humanization, such as the empowerment of the patient, the care model, the staff ratio, the therapeutic relationship, the nursing time of direct dedication to the patient, the therapeutic environment, safety and patient and staff perception of feeling safe. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The present study can help to improve the care offered in acute mental health units.

Abstract
The aims of the study are to evaluate and synthesise research that has investigated social determinants of health screening by primary healthcare nurses; how and when primary health care nurses perform social determinants of health screening; and implications for advancing nursing practice. Systematic searches in electronic databases identified fifteen published studies which met the inclusion criteria. Studies were synthesised using reflexive thematic analysis. This review found little evidence of primary health care nurses using standardised social determinants of health screening tools. Eleven subthemes were identified and collapsed into three main themes: organisation and health system supports are required to enable primary health care nurses; primary health care nurses are often reluctant to perform social determinants of health screening; and the importance of interpersonal relationships for social determinants of health screening. The social determinants of health screening practices of primary health care nurses are poorly defined and understood. Evidence suggests that primary health care nurses are not routinely using standardised screening tools or other objective methods. Recommendations are made for valuing therapeutic relationships, social determinants of health education and the promotion of screening by health systems and professional bodies. Overall, further research examining the best social determinant of health screening method is required.

Abstract
UNLABELLED WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Psychiatric and/or mental health nurses are struggling to measure the outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. Collecting nurse-sensitive patient outcomes is a strategy to provide outcomes of a nurse-patient relationship from patients' perspectives. Because there was no validated scale, the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome-Scale (six-point Likert-scale) was recently developed and psychometrically evaluated. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This is the first study using the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome-scale to measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship in psychiatric hospitals. Moderate to good average scores for the MH-NURSE-POS total (4.42) and domains scores (≥4.09). are observed. Especially outcomes related to 'motivation' to follow and stay committed to the treatment received high average scores (≥4.60). Our results are consistent with the patient-reported effect(s) of relation-based nursing in qualitative research. The scores generate evidence to support the outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and implicates that further investment in (re)defining and elaborating nurse-patient relationships in mental healthcare is meaningful and justified. More comparative patient-reported data can determine how nurse-sensitive patient outcomes are affected by the patient, nurse, and context. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Demonstrating patient-reported outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship can be important to enhance the therapeutic alliance between nurses and patients, organize responsive nursing care, and create nursing visibility in mental healthcare. Further nursing staff training on interpersonal competencies, such as self-awareness and cultural sensitivity, can be pivotal to achieving the patient-reported outcomes for inpatients with mental health problems. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Identifying patient-reported outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship is a priority in inpatient mental healthcare to guide clinical decision-making and quality improvement initiatives. Moreover, demonstrating nurse-sensitive patient outcomes can be a strategy to avoid further erosion of the specialism of psychiatric and/or mental health nursing. AIM/QUESTION To measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. METHOD In a multicentred cross-sectional study, 296 inpatients admitted to five psychiatric hospitals completed the recently developed and validated Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome-Scale (MH-NURSE-POS). The MH-NURSE-POS consists of 21 items (six-point Likert-scale) in four domains: 'growth', 'expression', 'control', and 'motivation'. RESULTS Participants displayed moderate to good average scores for the MH-NURSE-POS total (4.42) and domain scores (≥4.09). Especially outcomes related to 'motivation' to follow and stay committed to the treatment received high average scores (≥4.60). DISCUSSION The results demonstrate that patients perceive the nurse-patient relationship and the care given by psychiatric and/or mental health nurses as contributing to their treatment. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICES Patient-reported outcomes can guide nurses and managers to provide and organize nursing care and to build a nurse-patient relationship that has a positive impact on these outcomes. Additionally, outcomes can create nursing visibility as a profession in- and outside mental healthcare.

Selecting appropriate tools to improve diagnostic reasoning sets the foundation for further workup and tailored interventions.

Abstract
A strong association exists between the quality of nurse-service user therapeutic relationship and care outcomes on acute mental health inpatient wards. Despite evidence that service users desire improved therapeutic engagement, and registered mental health nurses recognize the benefits of therapeutic relationships, such interactions remain sub-optimal. There is a dearth of evidence on factors influencing implementation of interventions to support and encourage therapeutic engagement. This study aimed to understand the barriers and enablers to implementation of the Therapeutic Engagement Questionnaire (TEQ), across fifteen acute inpatient wards in seven English mental health organizations. Qualitative methods were used in which data were collected from ethnographic field notes and documentary review, coded, and analysed using thematic analysis. Theoretical framing supported data analysis and interpretation. Reporting adheres to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. The TEQ as an evidence-based intervention co-produced with service users and nurses was valued and welcomed by many nurse directors, senior clinicians, and ward managers. However, a range of practical and perceptual factors impeded implementation. Furthermore, many existing contextual challenges for intervention implementation in acute inpatient wards were magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Suitable facilitation to address these barriers can help support implementation of the TEQ, with some transferability to implementation of other interventions in these settings. Our study suggests several facilitation methods, brought together in a conceptual model, including encouragement of reflective, facilitative discussion meetings among stakeholders and researchers, effort put into winning nurse 'buy-in' and identifying and supporting ward-level agents of change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assuring quality care is critical to the well-being and recovery of individuals receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment, yet a comprehensive map of quality inpatient care does not exist. AIMS To isolate and describe quality elements of inpatient psychiatric treatment. METHODS A survey queried psychiatric inpatient nursing leaders on what they considered to be critical elements of quality. The survey was emailed to 40 American Psychiatric Nurses Association members, and 39 individuals responded. In the survey, participants were asked to comment on the importance of six dimensions of quality as well as quality indicators used on their units. RESULTS Data from this survey indicate how thought leaders conceptualized quality of inpatient care. A unifying philosophy of care was endorsed as a quality element as was structure that affords staff available time on the unit-engaging with patients. While staffing levels were viewed as important, the respondents commented on the nuances between staffing and quality. Participants endorsed the importance of involving individuals in their treatment planning as well as tapping into patients' perspectives on the treatment experience. CONCLUSIONS The participants' responses compliment the quality literature and reinforce the need to develop a comprehensive map of quality elements. These elements interact in complex way, for instance, staffing, engagement, and teamwork is tied to the organizational structure and philosophy of care, which in turn facilitates consumer involvement in care. Thus, gauging the impact of quality on outcomes will demand consideration of the interaction of factors not just the linear relationship of one element to an outcome.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There is no qualitative systematic review of nurses' perceptions of their interactions with people hearing voices. There are some studies exploring the interventions provided by community psychiatric nurses to people hearing voices; these give a sense of what interactions may contain. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO THE EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Nurses across both community and inpatient mental healthcare settings feel uncertain about how to interact with people hearing voices, sometimes feeling like they can do little to help. Their interactions are affected by the workplace culture, education and training and concern for their own safety. Nurses rely on a therapeutic relationship for all interactions. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: This is an under investigated area of mental healthcare. None the less this qualitative systematic review highlights that nurses are unclear about how to interact with service users hearing voices with the resultant outcome that service users in great distress may only be receiving minimal benefit from their interactions with the nurses caring for them. ABSTRACT: Aims and Objectives The aim of this qualitative systematic review and thematic analysis was to identify and synthesize results from studies that explored psychiatric nurses' perceptions of their interactions with service users experiencing auditory hallucinations (hearing voices). Method Qualitative systematic review and thematic analysis. Results Five studies that met the inclusion criteria were identified. Nurses reported that they felt uncertain about what to do for service users hearing voices, struggled to have interactions with voice hearers, but greatly valued the therapeutic relationship with service users. Nurses also reported that they required more education and training on how to interact effectively with people hearing voices. Finally, various workplace challenges were identified as an important factor mediating nurse interaction with service users hearing voices. Discussion Existing evidence shows that nurses lack clarity about how they can interact effectively and in a way that helps service users who are hearing voices. Significant barriers that they must overcome in order to be more certain of their role in caring for people hearing voices are difficult to engage service users and workplace challenges that were not conducive to helpful interactions and conversations. Implications for Practice Nurses caring for people hearing voices require more and better education and training with a view to them becoming more confident and competent when interacting with this service user group. Furthermore, healthy workplace cultures and maintaining a safe environment are necessary for effective caring interactions with people hearing voices.

Abstract
Objective: To determine a broad definition of the term interpersonal skills in nursing.
Materials and methods: This theoretical study follows Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis to examine the defining attributes of the concept. A literature search on interpersonal aspects of nursing was conducted in databases, e-books, and institutional repositories to recognize the uses, attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of the concept. Experts on professional and relationship skills were consulted between 2009 and 2019.
Results: This information was analyzed, concluding that interpersonal skills in nursing are defined as the abilities of professional nurses to express their knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and values in relationships with colleages, patients, and their relatives and achieve a humane and person- centered practice.
Conclusion: The concept of interpersonal skills in nursing is limited, given a lack of clarity in practice and research on the indistinct use of terms related to interpersonal skills and interpersonal knowledge. This analysis advances nursing theory towards practice and research.

ABSTRACT The field of psychiatric nursing provides unique opportunities for nurse-patient interactions. Nurses working in inpatient psychiatric settings face constant challenges that may hinder the development of meaningful nurse-patient interactions. Peplau's theory of interpersonal relations emphasized the importance of nurse-patient relationships in nursing care. Therapeutic alliance can help promote nurse-patient relationships and may help nurses and patients achieve their goals. This article presents several phases of a concept-building process that illustrates the importance of therapeutic alliance and its application in mental health care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand how patients in suicidal crises perceive their engagement with nurses in mental hospitals. METHODS A qualitative study based on grounded theory was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were used with 11 hospitalised adults living through suicidal crises. The data were analysed by multiple researchers, using the constant comparison method, coding, and memo writing. FINDINGS The core process was: 'Feeling nurtured through an interpersonal engagement'. This process underpinned two categories: 'Feeling safe and cared for while struggling to trust' and 'Working toward alleviation and change of my suicidal ideation'. The patients valued nurses who integrated caring approaches of building trust, demonstrating compassion, and promoting safety, with healing approaches of helping them to express and explore their suicidal ideations, and develop new insights and ways of coping. This interpersonal engagement could nurture patients' feelings of being accepted and understood, and being hopeful and capable of overcoming their suicidal ideations. CONCLUSION The conceptual insights can inform strategies to reframe overly instrumental approaches to prevent suicide and treat suicidal ideation, and instead promote an interpersonal orientation in nursing practice that integrates caring-healing approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To know the nursing team work process in Children and Adolescents Psychosocial Care Centers in a city of the state of São Paulo. METHOD This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, based on the approach of historical and dialectical materialism, carried out with the nursing team through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. RESULTS Eleven subjects from the nursing team participated in the study. The nursing team work process emerges from the dialectical tension of two categories: the non-knowledge, based on the alienation of the nursing work process and subordination to the knowledge of the multidisciplinary team, and the knowledge based on the nursing clinic outlined within the biological and relational perspectives. CONCLUSION The nursing team work process takes place when guided by a non-knowledge resulting from alienation due to the knowledge of the other, and by knowledge through the implementation of the Nursing Process through the Nursing Care Systematization based on a biological perspective, considering relational and administrative aspects, which emerges as a contradiction.

Abstract
A number of benefits have been identified for including consumers in nursing handover, such as improved safety and information exchange. In mental health settings these benefits may translate to improved nurse-consumer engagement and working towards the provision of recovery orientated practice. The process of including the consumer, whilst considered best practice, is not well established in mental health settings. Therefore further understanding, in regards to the consumer perspectives about this practice, is needed to inform its adoption and implementation.This qualitative descriptive study explores consumers' perspectives of their possible involvement in the nursing handover process within a mental health inpatient setting. The study took place in two mental health inpatient units in regional New South Wales, Australia. Thirteen semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with consumers, and a conventional content analysis method was used to analyse the data. Findings are presented under two categories: understanding the purpose and process of nursing handover and considering consumer involvement in handover.Findings provide insight into the views of consumers about being involved in nursing handover and further strengthen the rationale for establishing the process as part of routine practice within acute inpatient mental health units. The study also highlights the need to ensure that all processes within these settings accommodate consumer perspectives and involvement.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There is body of knowledge available about the harms associated with restrictive interventions used in behaviour management, service users' perceptions of the use of restraints, and staff competence in behaviour management. The staff perspective has been studied in terms of staff exposure, responses to and prevention of aggression, staff-related factors associated with service user aggression, and staff attitudes and perceptions towards violence. The definitions of competence in behaviour management provided in training interventions are fragmented and based on unilateral measurements. Training interventions with the purpose of enhancing staff competence in behaviour management are organized regularly, yet there is a lack of clarity on how effective these interventions are. Inadequate conceptual understanding of behaviour management can weaken the effectiveness of these interventions. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Our study produced new knowledge by providing a preliminary conceptual framework that can be used to comprehensively describe and assess competence in managing challenging behaviour and to cover safely the whole care process. Humane care and ethical sensitivity should be the premises of interaction with people in distress. We also pointed out the needs for conceptual clarification of the concepts of confidence, support and restraint. We provide important new insight into the leadership and cultural issues of behaviour management that is relevant for patients, staff members and healthcare organizations. We found that staff members do not consider service user safety and workplace safety as opposing issues. Further, we provide new perspectives for prevention, the risk assessment process and effective communication in the context of behaviour management. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: A comprehensive understanding of the competences related to behaviour management will foster universal definitions for "support" and "restraint," which can then be used to ensure that the best practices are used for behaviour management. Organizational culture and participative leadership on behaviour management should be developed with a special focus on safety issues, common understanding of comprehensive competence, risk assessment and prevention, views regarding the use of restraints, and teamwork. ABSTRACT: Introduction Previous research concerning staff views of behaviour management has not considered instructors' views. The definitions of competence in behaviour management are fragmented, which can undermine the effectiveness of training interventions. Aim/Question This study aimed to describe Finnish and British Management of Actual or Potential Aggression instructors' perceptions of safety and behaviour management-related competences and create a conceptual framework for comprehensive competence. Method An explorative-descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling (N = 22), semi-structured interviews and abductive content analysis. Results Conceptual framework of comprehensive competence in managing challenging behaviour includes five categories-knowledge, skills, attitude, confidence and ethical sensitivity-and 21 subcategories. Competent staff and supportive leadership ensured safety, while inconsistent risk management culture, the health and behaviour of service users, and inadequate staff orientation endangered safety. Discussion The study produced new knowledge of safety issues and competences from the perspective of the instructors who deliver behaviour management training. Implications for practice Competence to manage challenging behaviour should be developed based on our conceptual framework to provide an effective and safe training. Prevention, the risk assessment process, alternative communication, and the definitions of "confidence," "support" and "restraint" should all be sufficiently addressed in future training.

Abstract
Mental health nurses are struggling to describe their nursing identity as professional discipline in a changing mental health care. Measuring nurse-sensitive patient outcomes and demonstrating nursing's effect(s) experienced by patients contribute to (re)discover the specific nursing identity. However, a valid and reliable scale is currently lacking. The aim of this study was the development and psychometric evaluation of the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome Scale (MH-NURSE-POS) for inpatient psychiatric hospital settings. This three-staged study resulted in a scale capturing how inpatients experience the contribution of nurses in their treatment in psychiatric hospitals. First, a draft questionnaire was developed based on a literature review, an independent expert's advice, and an experts panel. Second, the content validity was tested in a two-round Delphi-procedure and focus groups with patients. A pilot test, based on cognitive interviews, confirmed the feasibility of the questionnaire. Third, the psychometric properties of the mental health nurse-sensitive patient outcomes were determined in a sample of 353 patients. The cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of five psychiatric hospitals (Belgium). The factor structure (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy 0.924; Bartlett's test of sphericity χ2 = 4162.537; df = 231; P < 0.001), convergent validity by the Individualized Care Scale (Pearson correlation 0.660; P < 0.001), and reliability (Cronbach's Alpha 0.854) were evaluated. The factor analysis resulted in a four-factor solution representing growth, expression, control, and motivation. The Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome Scale is a valid and reliable tool to measure the effectiveness of mental health nurses from the patient perspective.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to determine the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of inpatients in a psychiatric clinic about the therapeutic environment of the clinic. DESIGN AND METHODS The data were collected in interviews using the phenomenological method and interpreted using Strauss and Corbin's approach to qualitative data analysis. FINDINGS As a result of the data analysis, four themes, "Activities," "Physical Environment," "Personnel," and "Rules" were determined, and each with a number of related subthemes. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The therapeutic environment is a dynamic space that can be modified according to the needs of the patients. Psychiatric nurses will benefit from responding to the feedback from patients by providing, for example, more activities or additional psychotherapeutic interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify factors influencing the hopes of mental health nurses and to explore their experiences with a sense of hope. DESIGN AND METHODS A descriptive research survey was conducted with 113 nurses at three closed psychiatric wards in South Korea. FINDINGS Nurses' hope, interpersonal skill competence, and professional self-concept were all found to have statistically significant correlations (r = 0.60-0.73, p < 0.01). These factors explained 62% of the variance in nurses' hope. In ten themes influencing hope, 71.1% were positive, 28.9% negative. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The findings suggest that the promotion of nurses' interpersonal skill competence and professional self-concept is helpful for increasing hope levels. Both positive and negative experiences with hope are important in developing strategies of nursing roles.

Abstract
Complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) can be of great support to individuals suffering from psychiatric conditions; however, it is still rarely incorporated into clinical practice. OBJECTIVE To examine the influences of psychosocial and sociodemographic factors on health-care professionals' intention to use CIM in their psychiatric clinical practice. METHOD One-hundred-and-five participants completed a questionnaire developed from an adapted version of Triandis' Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB). Intentions to use CIM (yes or no) were analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS The multivariate model retained three main factors: affect, perceived social norms, and conditions facilitating CIM. These predicted health-care professionals' intention to use CIM with an AUC = 94.7%. RESULTS underlined that positive affective attitudes towards CIM, feeling that CIM was congruent with professional and institutional goals, and having sufficient skills in CIM were essential to ensuring that health-care professionals would integrate CIM into their clinical practice.

Abstract
Nurses play a central role in the delivery of quality mental health services. Desired qualities of a mental health nurse, in particular therapeutic relationships, have been described in the literature, primarily reflecting the nursing paradigm. Service users' perspectives must be more fully understood to reflect contemporary mental health policy and to recognize their position at the centre of mental health service delivery and to directly influence and contribute their perspectives and experiences to mental health nursing education. A qualitative exploratory research project was undertaken to inform and enhance understanding of what service users see as the desired qualities of a mental health nurse. The project was co-produced by service users as experts by experience, and mental health nurse academics to ensure the service user perspective was privileged. This international project conducted in Europe and Australia included a series of focus groups with service users (n = 50). Data were analysed thematically. Being with me was a major theme identified and reflected the sub-themes: respect towards service users as persons; empathy, compassion and effective communication; understanding service users; knowledge of services; and fostering hope and believing that recovery is possible. These qualities specifically reflecting the service user perspective must be central to mental health nursing curricula to facilitate the development of holistic care and recovery-oriented practice. These findings were utilized to directly inform development of a co-produced mental health nursing learning module, to maximize genuine service user involvement, and to fully realize the benefits of service user led education for undergraduate nursing students.

Abstract
Child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) inpatient care has the potential to support or hinder young people's mental-health recovery. Research describing inpatient care from the perspective of young people is rare. Personal blogs provide an opportunity to further understand how inpatient care relates to young people's recovery processes. This study aimed to explore young people's experiences of CAP inpatient care supporting mental-health recovery. The study is reported in accordance with the COREQ guidelines. Data were created during 2018 from twenty-seven personal blogs describing first-hand experiences of being a patient in a CAP inpatient care facility in Sweden and analysed using a method for interpretive description. Information in blogs suggests they were written by women, a majority of which had experienced eating disorders. Findings describe young people's experiences of CAP inpatient care supporting mental-health recovery in an interpretive explanation with one theme, 'Don't abandon me', and three sub-themes: 'Listen to me', 'Believe in me', and 'Allow me to feel safe'. This study adds to the growing body of empirical work suggesting the importance of the concept of recovery in young people's mental health. To support recovery, CAP inpatient care needs to focus on developing the content of care rather than minimizing the length of the stay. User experience should be at the heart of efforts aimed at improving services.

Abstract
Service user involvement in mental health nursing education is increasing and a developing evidence base is demonstrating more positive attitudes towards people labelled with a mental illness. To date, most research on this approach has focussed on the perspectives of nursing students, with very limited research drawing on the expertise and opinions of service users. The aim of this study was to explore potential improvements in mental health nursing education, and ways service user involvement can be enhanced as defined by service users themselves. An international qualitative research project was undertaken involving focus groups with service users (n = 50) from Australia and five European countries. The research was coproduced between Experts by Experience (service users) and mental health nurse academics. Data were analysed thematically. Findings reflected two broad themes: (1) improvements to content, including: further emphasis on developing emotional intelligence, understanding mental distress and broader context of care; (2) Improvements to service user involvement, including: support, format, and teaching and learning techniques. These findings provide direction for maximising the benefits of service user involvement and show the value of the expertise of service users.

Abstract
Research on nurse-patient relationships with the schizophrenia population is sparse. The current study piloted a survey to explore therapeutic relationships. Fifty-one psychiatric nurses completed an online survey on therapeutic relationships with the schizophrenia population. Factor and chi-square analysis yielded preliminary findings. Fifteen of 16 survey items loaded onto four factors at ≥0.4. A significant association between level of education and professional certification and comfort working with patients with schizophrenia was found. Survey modifications and a larger sample size may generate useful information and clarify the relationship among education, certification, and comfort. Inpatient psychiatric nurses regularly dispense pro re nata (PRN) medication to individuals during their psychiatric hospitalization. International studies indicate that 66% to 90% of patients receive PRN medications during hospitalization, a large percentage of which are benzodiazepines (BZDs). Although clear opportunities exist for nursing intervention to reduce BZD use, there is little recent U.S. literature on inpatient psychiatric nurses' proactive approach to the issue. The current article examines the factors that support BZD use during inpatient hospitalization, including nurses' attitudes around BZD use, the perceived effectiveness of the medication to address difficult situations, and the barriers to using alternative nonpharmacological methods. Suggestions are presented for how nurses might begin dialogues with patients around BZD use and alternative strategies to manage distress. It is recommended that the specialty initiate a research agenda for reducing BZD use during inpatient psychiatric treatment and champion the issue as a focus for systematic improvement efforts. Abstract
Presence and therapeutic listening are complementary therapies that are incorporated into daily nursing practice. This article presents the nurse's role in facilitating complementary therapies of presence and therapeutic listening, barriers encountered, and the behaviors and techniques to be used. Also discussed is the impact that using presence and therapeutic listening has on patient outcomes. These interventions have the potential to significantly alter patients' perceptions of care and improve patient outcomes. Presence and therapeutic listening are vital to developing a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. This relationship is what drives positive patient outcomes and increases overall satisfaction and quality of care.

Abstract
From the perspective of psychiatric and mental health nurses in Sweden, this discussion paper aims to position psychiatric and mental health nursing as a transformative force contributing to enforcing person-centered values and practices in health care. We argue the potential impact of psychiatric and mental health nursing on service user health and recovery, nursing student education and values, and the organization and management of health care. Psychiatric and mental health nursing is discussed as a caring, reflective, and therapeutic practice that promotes recovery and health. Implications for nursing education, research, management, and practice are outlined.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to describe the perceptions and lived experiences of former psychiatric patients of their own and/or co-patients' behavior that nursing staff has regarded as challenging and that has resulted in behavior management. DESIGN AND METHODS An explorative-descriptive qualitative design with video vignettes, semistructured interviews, and abductive content analysis. FINDINGS Many reasons for different kinds of patient behavior that were considered challenging by staff were identified. Delivering care based on patients' needs was identified as core staff competence. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Findings can be utilized when pursuing restraint reduction in psychiatric care by enhancing staff competence.

Abstract
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a long-established evidenced-based intervention aimed at guiding people to implement change. Originally developed by William Miller from the United States and Stephen Rollnick from the United Kingdom, a strong emphasis for MI is the underlying 'spirit', rather than merely the specific techniques within the model. The 'spirit' of MI consists of four key components: acceptance, partnership, evocation and compassion. These have direct overlap with concepts within the personal recovery model recognised as a critical framework in delivery of contemporary mental health services for consumers. Despite this recognition, recovery concepts have struggled to gain consistent traction, particularly within inpatient mental health units. This paper proposes that MI presents one strategy for integrating recovery-focused principles within routine mental health nursing (MHN) practice. An overview of MI and its relationship with recovery principles is discussed in the context of contemporary MHN practice. Evaluation results of a locally developed MI workshop for MHNs within a regional area of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia are presented to highlight the emerging evidence for this potential. Following the workshop, MHN participants showed key improvements in knowledge and confidence scores, as well as in understanding of key MI processes and strategies. The consolidation of these skills through training and a supervision framework is outlined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To adequately describe the advanced psychiatric nursing roles and to distinguish them from the other roles of psychiatric and general nursing care, it is necessary to explore the concrete tasks and activities and the scope of practice of Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). OBJECTIVE to extract, summarize and systematize the tasks and activities of the Psychiatric Mental Health APN from the international scientific literature. DESIGN systematic literature review reported following the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) statement and checklist. METHODS The database search was performed using CINAHL, PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library and Google/Google Scholar databases. Literature sources in English and German, which reported tasks and activities of the Psychiatric Mental Health APNs were included in the analysis. No time restrictions were defined. Roles such as Community Mental Health Nurses and Public Mental Health Nurses were excluded from the analysis. Data were extracted by independent reviewers for qualitative thematic analysis. RESULTS An extensive body of international literature on Psychiatric Mental Health APN sub-roles could be identified through a systematic literature search. Through our synthesis the main tasks and activities of Psychiatric Mental Health APNs could be identified and described. Altogether 46 items (practice dimensions) could be identified from the 20 sources and finally systematically summarized into six themes or "practice domains": (1) direct (clinical) nursing and care practice, (2) care coordination and case management, (3) psychosocial health promotion and prevention, (4) consulting, education and coaching, (5) leadership and public relations, and (6) research and practice development. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review provide a thorough outline of the tasks and activities of the Psychiatric Mental Health APN. Thus, the results reported here form the basis for a further differentiation of the tasks and activities of the Psychiatric Mental Health APNs from the basic nursing activities as well as tasks and activities of the generalist APNs. In this context, however, an attempt should be made to increase the specificity of the settings by including the tasks and activities of the community and public mental health nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The work of health professionals is characterized by a high demand for psychological and emotional resources and high levels of stress. Therefore, the promotion of commitment and job well-being through strategies such as increased mindfulness, is important among nursing workers. Although mindfulness has shown positive effects in the health field, few studies have explored the mechanisms and processes underlying these results. We investigated the mediating role of empathy (cognitive/affective) in the effect of mindfulness on the dimensions of engagement in nursing professionals. METHODS Sample was comprised of 1268 Spanish nurses between 22 and 62 years old, that completed the Utrecht Labor Engagement Scale and the adapted versions of Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and Basic Empathy Scale. The relationship between variables to be included in the regression analyses, bivariate correlations were carried out, and the descriptive statistics of these variables were also found. To estimate the mediation model was used, in this case for multiple mediation effects. RESULTS Mindfulness is found to affect the Vigor and Dedication factors of engagement through cognitive empathy. While for the Absorption factor, the affective component of empathy also exerts a mediating role, although weaker than cognitive empathy. Cognitive empathy, as an individual factor, was shown to have a mediating effect between mindfulness and the factors of engagement in healthcare workers. CONCLUSIONS The level of mindfulness influences engagement of nursing professionals positively, and this result is mediated mainly by cognitive empathy. Both mindfulness and empathy are modifiable individual factors, so their intervention by designing and implementing specific programs, can increase the commitment and wellbeing of professionals generating benefits to workers and to their patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The therapeutic relationship is synonymous with mental health nursing and fundamental to the provision of nursing care, regardless of the setting in which care is provided. This literature review examines, from a nursing perspective, factors influencing the formation and maintenance of therapeutic relationships in forensic mental health settings. METHODS A systematic search of the literature, using a range of electronic databases, focusing on nurse-patient therapeutic relationships in forensic settings was conducted. Articles were Critical Appraisal Skills Programme quality appraised, followed by a meta-aggregative thematic approach to data analysis and synthesis to identify themes and, finally, a production of an "action" policy statement. FINDINGS AND IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE Eight articles met the criteria for review inclusion. Nine themes were identified; seven were categorized as internal/interpersonal factors, and two were categorized as external/environmental factors (with some themes interconnected). Synthesis of findings resulted in the production of a policy statement encouraging forensic mental health nurses to be aware of intrapersonal influences on therapeutic relationships and the need to provide a safe and supportive clinical environment for these relationships to form.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Therapeutic staff-patient interaction is fundamental in psychiatric care. It is recognized as a key to healing in and of itself, or a premise to enhance psychiatric treatment adherence. Still, little is known about how these interactions are recorded in nursing documentation. The purpose of the study was to assess the quality and quantity of staff-patient interactions as recorded in progress notes in nursing documentation. METHODS The study has an observational registry study design. A random sample of 3858 excerpts was selected from progress notes in 90 patient journals on an acute psychiatric unit and an open inpatient district psychiatric centre (DPC) in Norway. The Scale for the Evaluation of Staff-Patient Interactions in progress notes (SESPI) was used to assess the progress note excerpts. It is developed to assess the quality and quantity in excerpt descriptions of staff-patient interactions in terms of empathic attunement. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the total sample and for each ward separately. Ordinal and multinomial logistic regression were used to estimate control for shift type, staff education level, and type of hospital ward. RESULTS Only 7.6% of the total number of excerpts (N = 3858) described staff-patient interactions sufficiently to analyze them in terms of attunement. Compared to the DPC, the acute ward reported more staff-patient interactions. The evening excerpts reported more successful types of attunement than those from the night shifts. Education level did not contribute significantly to our models. CONCLUSION These findings present a unique insight into the quality and quantity of mental health nursing documentation regarding staff-patient interactions. Therapeutic interactions where staff tried to attune to the patients were rarely described. However, this is the first study measuring nursing documentation with the SESPI, and more studies are required to validate the scale and our findings. One potential clinical implication of this research is the development of a scale that personnel in psychiatric wards can have for evaluation of the quality of their reporting practice with emphasis on staff-patient interactions. By regular use this may help keeping up emphasis on emphatic attunement in milieu treatment contexts.

Abstract
AIM To develop and test the reliability of the Scale for the Evaluation of Staff-Patient Interactions in Progress Notes (SESPI). Therapeutic nurse-patient interactions are fundamental in mental health nursing. However, little is known about how these interactions are recorded in nursing documentation and there is no instrument available for collecting this type of information for quantitative analysis. DESIGN Instrument development and reliability testing. METHODS The development of the SESPI was based on qualitative analyses of progress notes retrieved from patient records in two mental health services. A self psychological attunement perspective guided the analyses. SESPI was tested for internal consistency and inter-rater reliability after 22 nurses independently scored 10 progress notes. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha for the entire instrument was 0.977, indicating that the raters' scores had very high internal consistency. ICC was 0.770. The alpha and ICC values for each step were high, varying between 0.970 and 0.992.

Abstract
Behavioral health care has been slow to take up robust efforts to improve patient safety. This lag is especially apparent in inpatient psychiatry, where there is risk for physical and psychological harm. Recent investigative journalism has provoked public concern about instances of alleged abuse, negligence, understaffing, sexual assault, inappropriate medication use, patient self-harm, poor sanitation, and inappropriate restraint and seclusion. However, empirical evidence describing the scope of unsafe experiences is limited. While evidence-based inpatient psychiatry requires care to be trauma-informed, market failures and a lack of payment alignment with patient-centered care leave patients vulnerable to harm. Existing regulatory mechanisms attempt to provide accountability; however, these mechanisms are imperfect. Furthermore, research is sparse. Few health services researchers study inpatient psychiatry, the issue has not been a priority among research funders, and data on inpatient psychiatry is excluded from national surveys of quality. Several policy levers could begin to address these deficiencies. These include aligning incentives with patient-centered care, building trauma-informed care into accreditation and monitoring, conducting trend analyses of critical incidents, and improving research capacity.

Abstract
There is evidence supporting the use of formal music therapy in the treatment of mental health consumers. Despite this, it appears to be an intervention which has not been routinely offered to consumers in Australian acute mental health inpatient units, possibly due to the lack of trained music therapists (or inadequate funding to employ them), as well as the challenges posed by the acuity of presentations and the short duration of admissions. Less formal therapeutic music activities may benefit consumers within these settings. This article describes how a music group activity facilitated by clinical staff with no music therapy qualifications was established. The first phase of this evaluation is then described using a descriptive qualitative method. We undertook a series of consumer and staff focus groups to explore the impact of a music group activity on an acute mental health inpatient unit. Five themes emerged from the transcripts of the focus groups' discussions, effects on mood, relationships and engagement, social connectedness and inclusion, the ward atmosphere and noise/agitation. Positive effects were shown across these areas, suggesting that the music group activity we established was beneficial for consumers and staff, and enhanced the ward atmosphere.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The review aimed to 1) explore the constituents of nurse-patient therapeutic engagement on acute mental health wards; 2) map factors that influence engagement to the Theoretical Domains Framework and 3) integrate results into a conceptual model of engagement to inform the development of interventions to improve engagement. DESIGN A systematic integrative review using an established framework specific to the integrative review methodology. DATA SOURCES Database searches (CINAHL, PsycINFO, BNI and Cochrane Library) and hand searching identified 3414 articles. After screening, applying eligibility criteria, and quality appraisal, 37 articles were included: n = 27 empirical research studies, n = 10 expert opinion pieces, n = 1 case study and n = 1 theoretical report. REVIEW METHODS Peer-reviewed empirical studies, theoretical reports or expert opinion pieces that explored therapeutic engagement as a stated aim and were conducted in acute mental health inpatient settings from the patient or nurse perspective were included. Data were extracted from the introduction, results and discussion sections of empirical research, and the complete article of theoretical and expert opinion pieces. Data were coded then grouped into subthemes and themes. Data relating to influencing factors were further categorised according to the Theoretical Domains Framework. Results were synthesised into a conceptual model of engagement. RESULTS Five conceptually distinct, but closely related constructs of engagement - called the "Principles of Engagement" - emerged: 1) Understanding the person and their experiences; 2) Facilitating growth; 3) Therapeutic use of self; 4) Choosing the right approach and 5) Authoritative vs. emotional containment. Influences on engagement ranged across all 14 theoretical domains of the Theoretical Domains Framework. CONCLUSION A holistic understanding of the essential components of engagement may make it easier for nurses to recognise what they do, and to do it well. The model can be used to generate testable hypotheses about how and where to target behavioural change interventions. The Principles of Engagement must be reflected in the development of interventions to improve engagement.

Abstract
Few studies address the many challenges that are faced by staff and patients in the inpatient mental health context. In particular, there is a lack of research that explores first-hand patient experiences in order to establish what treatment practices best assist patient recovery and what are the barriers to these practices. This qualitative study, which utilises a user-involved research framework, collaborates with a co-researcher patient group throughout the study. Fourteen patients, all of whom had been in inpatient treatment for at least three weeks, were recruited to the study. Study participants were interviewed in-depth in the period September 2016 to March 2017. Data underwent a thematic analysis that was inspired by interpretative phenomenological analysis. A core theme of the findings was the importance of being recognised as a whole person, and the patient-professional relationship was regarded as a fundamental factor in fostering recovery, with two underlying themes: (i) a need to have one's self-identity recognised and supported, and (ii) an experience of ambivalence between needing closeness and distance. This study suggests ways nurses can give priority to interpersonal interactions and relationships with hospitalised patients over task-oriented duties, highlighting the need for nurses to balance patient competing needs for both closeness and distance.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to summarize the experiences of African psychiatric nurses in their workplace by examining the findings of existing qualitative studies. METHODS Eleven studies published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, between 1998 and 2016, which explored psychiatric nurses' experiences in Africa, were included. FINDINGS After meta-aggregation, five key findings were identified: 1) organization and management, 2) perceptions of professional safety and insecurity, 3) relationship with the patient, 4) emotional experiences and 5) recommendations for improvement. DISCUSSION The findings in this study highlight the stressful nature of the work climate of the psychiatric nurse in South Africa. More focus on improving working conditions and providing support is necessary to increase the quality of care for psychiatric mental health patients and their nurse providers.
