Abstract
To date, few study explored the damage of chronic dietary exposure to the lipophilic pesticide deltamethrin (DM) in aquatic animals, and it remains unclear whether its toxicity and residue levels would be affected by dietary lipid levels. Therefore, the present study aimed to elucidate the interactions between dietary lipid levels and DM levels in the Pacific white shrimp, focusing on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal microbiota. DM has excellent insecticidal activity and has been used worldwide. Previous research has shown that environmental DM poses toxicity risks to aquatic animals. Six different diets were formulated to feed shrimp for 6 weeks with two lipid levels (6.96 %, 10.88 %) and three DM levels (0.2 mg·kg-1, 1 mg·kg-1, 5 mg·kg-1), namely LF0.2, LF1, LF5, HF0.2, HF1, HF5, respectively. Each diet was assigned to three net cages with a total of 18 cages (40 shrimp per tank, average weight (0.382±0.001 g), of which 0.2 mg·kg-1, are grouped in environmental DM control groups. The growth of shrimp was reduced as the dietary DM levels increased. When shrimp were fed a diet containing a high dose of DM, a reduction in their antioxidant capacity was also observed. Enzyme activity and gene expression related to lipid metabolism in hepatopancreas and hemolymph indicated a significant interaction between dietary lipid levels and DM in the lipid metabolism of shrimp. The terms of detoxification-related genes (gst, sult, cyp1a1) were upregulated in shrimp fed the high-dose DM. Additionally, the presence of DM in the diet severely harmed the hepatopancreas and intestinal histological morphology. DM in the diet increased the susceptibility of shrimp to pathogens and induced intestine microbiota dysbiosis, disrupting the balance of inter-species interactions. DM was not detected in the muscle and hepatopancreas of the shrimp after six weeks of exposure. In conclusion, the presence of DM in feed reduced the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of shrimp, damaging intestinal health. DM was rapidly metabolized by shrimp.

Abstract
Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) is a frequently detected antibiotic in the environment, and there is a growing concern about its potential toxic effects on aquatic organisms. sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicas) is a benthic invertebrate whose gut acts as a primary immune defense and serves critical protective barrier. In this study, growth performance, histology, gut microbiota, and metabolomics analyses were performed to investigate the toxic response in the intestine of sea cucumber effects caused by SMZ stress for 56 d by evaluating with different concentrations of SMZ (0, 1.2×10-3, and 1.2 mg/L). The weight gain rate of sea cucumbers under SMZ stress showed significant decrease, indicating that the growth of sea cucumbers was hindered. Analysis of the intestinal morphological features indicated that SMZ stimulation resulted in atrophy of the sea cucumber gut. In the 1.2×10-3 mg/L concentration, the thickness of muscle and mucosal layers was reduced by 12.40% and 21.39%, while in the 1.2 mg/L concentration, the reductions were 35.08% and 26.98%. The abundance and diversity of sea cucumber intestinal bacteria decreased significantly (P < 0.05) under the influence of SMZ. Notably, the intestinal bacteria of sea cucumber became homogenized with the increase in SMZ concentration, and the relative abundance of Ralstonia reached 81.64% under the stress of 1.2 mg/L concentration. The SMZ stress significantly impacted host metabolism and disrupted balance, particularly in L-threonine, L-tyrosine, neuronic acid, piperine, and docosapentaenoic acid. SMZ leads to dysregulation of metabolites, resulting in growth inhibition and potential inflammatory responses that could adversely affect the normal activities of aquatic organisms. Further metabolic pathway enrichment analyses demonstrated that impaired biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis metabolic pathway were major reasons for SMZ stress-induced intestinal bacteria dysbiosis. This research aims to provide some theoretical evidence for the ecological hazard assessment of antibiotics in water.

Abstract
The accumulation of antibiotics in the environment has ecological impacts that have received less attention than the human health risks of antibiotics, although the effects could be far-reaching. This review discusses the effects of antibiotics on the health of fish and zooplankton, manifesting in direct or dysbiosis-mediated physiological impairment. Acute effects of antibiotics in these organism groups are usually induced at high concentrations (LC50 at ∼100-1000 mg/L) that are not commonly present in aquatic environments. However, when exposed to sub-lethal, environmentally relevant levels of antibiotics (ng/L-μg/L) disruption of physiological homeostasis, development, and fecundity can occur. Antibiotics at similar or lower concentrations can induce dysbiosis of gut microbiota which can affect the health of fish and invertebrates. We show that the data about molecular-level effects of antibiotics at low exposure concentrations are limited, hindering environmental risk assessment and species sensitivity analysis. Fish and crustaceans (Daphnia sp.) were the two groups of aquatic organisms used most often for antibiotic toxicity testing, including microbiota analysis. While low levels of antibiotics impact the composition and function of gut microbiota in aquatic organisms, the correlation and causality of these changes to host physiology are not straightforward. In some cases, negative or lack of correlation have occurred, and, unexpectedly, gut microbial diversity has been unaffected or increased upon exposure to environmental levels of antibiotics. Efforts to incorporate functional analyses of gut microbiota are beginning to provide valuable mechanistic information, but more data is needed for ecological risk assessment of antibiotics.

Abstract
Little is known about the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) on marine fish. Using juvenile pearl gentian grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus♀ × E. lanceolatus♂), we investigated the effects of 56 days dietary oxytetracycline (OTC; OTCD) exposure (80 mg/kg body weight/day) on fish growth performance, intestinal health and antibiotic residue. Meanwhile, the alteration of intestinal health status and antibiotic residue after 7 (O7) or 14 days (O14) OTC withdrawal treatment were explored. We also assessed the potential human health risks based on target hazard quotient (THQ). The results showed that OTC exposure had no effects on growth rate parameters but caused liver and intestine atrophy. OTC exposure impaired the intestinal health by distorting intestinal morphological features, inducing oxidative stress, repressing immune function, triggering NF-κB-mediated inflammatory response and apoptosis, while 7 days OTC withdrawal treatment improved intestinal health status and 14 days OTC withdrawal treatment further improved it. In addition, the order of OTC residue in tested tissues after OTC exposure was: liver > kidney > spleen > muscle > intestine. OTC residue was significantly decreased in all tissues along with the increasing of withdrawal treatment period. Adults and children consuming the edible tissues (muscle) of OTC-treated or withdrawal-treated pearl gentian grouper would not experience any previous health risk as the THQ < 1 in all group.

Abstract
An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of diets supplemented with three sulfur-containing amino acids (SAA), namely, methionine, cysteine, and taurine, on the intestinal health status of juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) fed high-lipid diets. Four diets were formulated, namely, a high-lipid control diet (16% lipid, HL) and three SAA-supplemented diets, which were formulated by supplementing 1.5% methionine (HLM), 1.5% cysteine (HLC), and 1.5% taurine (HLT) into the HL control diet, respectively. Each diet was assigned to triplicate tanks, and each tank was stocked with 30 juvenile fish (appr. initial weight, 8 g). The histological and morphometric results showed that dietary SAA supplementation obviously improved the intestinal morphology and integrity, in particular as reflected by higher height of microvilli and mucosal folds. Dietary SAA supplementation, in particular cysteine, up-regulated the gene expression of mucin-2 and tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Tricellilun and JAM). Dietary SAA supplementation remarkably down-regulated the gene expression of apoptosis-related factors such as p38, JNK, and Bax, expression of pro-inflammatory factors (e.g., NF-κB, AP-1 IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α). SAA supplementation resulted in higher antioxidative abilities in the intestine. Additionally, dietary SAA supplementation largely altered the communities of intestinal microbiota. Compared with the HL group, higher relative abundance of potential beneficial bacteria, and lower relative abundance of opportunistic pathogens were observed in SAA-supplemented groups. Dietary taurine supplementation significantly increased the relative abundance of Ligilactobacillus (in particular Lactobacillus murinus) and Limosilactobacillus (especially Lactobacillus reuteri). In conclusion, dietary sulfur-containing amino acids supplementation have promising potential in ameliorating the intestinal inflammation of turbot fed high-lipid diets. Especially dietary cysteine and taurine supplementation have more positive effects on the communities of the intestinal microbiota of turbot.

Abstract
Nitrate (NO3-) pollution of waterbodies has attracted significant global attention as it poses a serious threat to aquatic organisms and human beings. This study aimed to evaluate the role of NO3-, an end product of biological nitrification processes, in immune status and lipid metabolism to have a comprehensive understanding of its toxic effects on fishes. Therefore, in this work, juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were subjected to four nominal concentrations of NO3- (i.e., 0, 50, 200, 400 mg/L of NO3--N) for a 60-day period. The results indicated that increased exposure to NO3- (200 and/or 400 mg/L) enhanced the concentrations of plasma heat shock protein concentrations (HSP70), complement component 3 (C3), complement component 4 (C4), immunoglobulin M (IgM) and lysozyme (LYS), which meant that NO3-caused fluctuations in the plasma immune system. Higher exposure to NO3- (200 and/or 400 mg/L) also caused significant enhancements in plasma glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), as well as glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) activity. Furthermore, NO3- exposure resulted in upregulation of liver TNF-α, IL-1β, HSP70, HSP90, and LYS. Additionally, the results suggested that NO3-exposure caused a certain degree of histological damage and inflammation in the liver and activated the immune defense processes of juvenile turbot. Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of certain genes associated with lipid metabolism (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha [PPAR-α], carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1[CPT1], liver X receptor [LXR] together with sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 [SREBP-1]) increased significantly within fish liver exposed to 200/400 mg/L NO3--N treatments. Finally, the results obtained from the analysis of the integrated biological responses version 2 (IBRv2) also confirmed the toxic effects of NO3- on juvenile turbot. According to these findings, it can be found that NO3- emission in the aquatic environment needs to be strictly controlled, as it may cause immune and lipid metabolism disorders in fish.

Abstract
Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, has been widely used in the treatment and prevention of infection caused by bacteria in recent years. The present study was aimed to evaluate the response mechanisms to SMX stress in gills and digestive gland of Corbicula fluminea (O. F. Müller, 1774). To this end, clams were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of SMX (0, 1, 10 and 100 μg/L) for 7 and 28 days, and siphon behavior, tissue-specific enzymatic and transcriptional changes were assayed. Our results showed that exposure to SMX significantly suppressed filtration rate and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, activated antioxidant defense system and elevated transcription of several genes related to cell apoptosis in gills and digestive gland of clams. In general, SMX at environmentally relevant concentrations exhibited a negative impact on siphon behavior and induced neurotoxicology, oxidative stress and cell apoptosis in C. fluminea. The current study will help broaden our understanding of the ecotoxicity of SMX on freshwater bivalves.

Abstract
High carbohydrate diet (HCD) causes metabolism disorder and intestinal damages in aquaculture fish. Berberine has been applied to improve obesity, diabetes and NAFLD. However, whether berberine contributes to the alleviation of HCD-induced intestinal damages in aquaculture fish is still unclear. Here we investigated the effects and mechanism of berberine on HCD-induced intestinal damages in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). We found dietary berberine (50 mg/kg) improved the physical indexes (VSI and HSI) without affecting the growth performance and survival rate of largemouth bass. Importantly, the results showed that dietary berberine reduced the HCD-induced tissue damages and repaired the barrier in the intestine of largemouth bass. We observed dietary berberine significantly suppressed HCD-induced intestinal apoptosis rate (from 31.21 to 8.35%) and the activity level of Caspase3/9 (P < 0.05) by alleviating the inflammation (il1β, il8, tgfβ, and IL-6, P < 0.05) and ER stress (atf6, xbp1, perk, eif2α, chopa, chopb, and BIP, P < 0.05) in largemouth bass. Further results showed that dietary berberine declined the HCD-induced excessive lipogenesis (oil red O area, TG content, acaca, fasn, scd, pparγ, and srebp1, P < 0.05) and promoted the lipolysis (hsl, lpl, cpt1a, and cpt2, P < 0.05) via activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK, P < 0.05) and inhibiting sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1, P < 0.05) in the intestine of largemouth bass. Besides, we also found that dietary berberine significantly promoted the hepatic lipid catabolism (hsl, lpl, cpt1a, and cpt2, P < 0.05) and glycolysis (pk and ira, P < 0.05) to reduce the systematic lipid deposition in largemouth bass fed with HCD. Therefore, we elucidated that 50 mg/kg dietary berberine alleviated HCD-induced intestinal damages and improved AMPK/SREBP1-mediated lipid metabolism in largemouth bass, and evaluated the feasibility for berberine as an aquafeed additive to enhance the intestinal function of aquaculture species.

Abstract
The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were fed diets with three experimental feeds, a control diet (Control, crude protein (CP): 54.52%, crude lipid (CL): 11.45%), a low-protein diet with lysophospholipid (LP-Ly, CP: 52.46%, CL: 11.36%), and a low-lipid diet with lysophospholipid (LL-Ly, CP: 54.43%, CL: 10.19%), respectively. The LP-Ly and LL-Ly groups represented the addition of 1 g/kg of lysophospholipids in the low-protein and low-lipid groups, respectively. After a 64-day feeding trial, the experimental results showed that the growth performance, hepatosomatic index, and viscerosomatic index of largemouth bass in both the LP-Ly and LL-Ly groups were not significantly different compared to those in the Control group (P > 0.05). The condition factor and CP content of whole fish were significantly higher in the LP-Ly group than those in the Control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the Control group, the serum total cholesterol level and alanine aminotransferase enzyme activity were significantly lower in both the LP-Ly group and the LL-Ly group (P < 0.05). The protease and lipase activities in the liver and intestine of both group LL-Ly and group LP-Ly were significantly higher than those of the Control group (P < 0.05). Compared to both the LL-Ly group and the LP-Ly group, significantly lower liver enzyme activities and gene expression of fatty acid synthase, hormone-sensitive lipase, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 were found in the Control group (P < 0.05). The addition of lysophospholipids increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Cetobacterium and Acinetobacter) and decreased the abundance of harmful bacteria (Mycoplasma) in the intestinal flora. In conclusion, the supplementation of lysophospholipids in low-protein or low-lipid diets had no negative effect on the growth performance of largemouth bass, but increased the activity of intestinal digestive enzymes, enhanced the hepatic lipid metabolism, promoted the protein deposition, and regulated the structure and diversity of the intestinal flora.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) biotransformation can significantly affect the Hg speciation and bioaccumulation in fish, where gut microbiota play an important role in this process. Antibiotics have been extensively used in aquaculture and can affect gut microbial structure. However, the influence of antibiotics on Hg biotransformation in fish has not been thoroughly understood. The present study investigated the effects of antibiotic (florfenicol) application on gut microbiota and subsequent impacts on Hg biotransformation and bioaccumulation in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). The results showed that the florfenicol treatment did not affect IHg accumulation in the IHg-exposed fish or the MeHg accumulation in the MeHg-exposed fish. However, methylation was significantly weakened (from 0.015% d-1 to 0.005% d-1) and demethylation was completely terminated (from 0.046% d-1 to non-observable level) in the florfenicol-treated fish as compared to the control fish. This can be ascribed to the major shift in the richness of microbial methylators/demethylators in fish gut. Furthermore, florfenicol disturbed the homeostasis of gut microbiome and enhanced the growth of opportunistic pathogens. Our results strongly suggested that antibiotic application significantly altered the gut microbial community, thereby increasing the potential of MeHg accumulation by fish. This study highlights the importance of appropriate use of antibiotics in aquaculture as well as decreasing the environmental risks of Hg contamination in fish.

Abstract
Fish, including hybrid species, are essential components of aquaculture, and the gut microbiome plays a vital role in fish growth, behavior, digestion, and immune health. The gut microbiome can be affected by various internal and/or external factors, such as host development, diet, and environment. We reviewed the effects of diet and dietary supplements on intestinal microorganisms in hybrid fish and the difference in the gut microbiome between the hybrid and their hybrids that originate. Then, we summarized the role of the gut microbiome in the speciation and ecological invasion of hybrid fish. Finally, we discussed possible future studies on the gut microbiome in hybrid fish, including the potential interaction with environmental microbiomes, the effects of the gut microbiome on population expansion, and fish conservation and management.

Abstract
At present, the concentration of environmental pollutants, such as pesticides and antibiotics exposed in environment, especially in aquatic environment is increasing. Research on environmental pollutants has exploded in the last few years. However, studies on the combined effects of pesticides and antibiotics on fish are rare, especially the toxic damage to gill tissue is vague. In this paper, cypermethrin (CMN) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) were analyzed and found that there was a strong correlation between the pathways affected by the first 30 genes regulated by CMN and SMZ, respectively. Therefore, the toxic effects of CMN (0.651 μg L-1) and/or SMZ (0.3 μg L-1) on grass carp gill were studied in this paper. Histopathology, quantitative real-time PCR, and other methods were used to detect the tissue morphology, oxidative stress level, inflammation, and apoptosis-related indicators of the fish gills after exposure of 42 days. It was found that compared with the single exposure (CMN/SMZ) group, the combined exposure (MIX) group had a more pronounced oxidative stress index imbalance. At the same time, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signal pathway was activated and immuno-inflammatory reaction appeared in MIX group. The expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in the rising range is 2.94 times that of the C group, while the expression of interleukin 8 (IL-8) is as high as 32.67 times. This study reveals the harm of CMN and SMZ to fish, and provides a reference and basis for the rational use of pesticides and antibiotics.

Abstract
To comprehensively investigate the effects of exposure to legal doses of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), fishes were exposed to diets supplemented with different doses of SMZ (NS, normal feed; LS, 20 mg/kg·day; MS, 200 mg/kg·day; and HS, 1000 mg/kg·day) for 4 weeks and then fed with normal feed for 4 weeks. General SMZ accumulation, growth performance, intestinal short-chain fatty acids, intestinal flora diversity, composition, and function were systemically evaluated. Results indicated that the SMZ accumulation in O. niloticus muscles, intestinal contents, and aquaculture environment positively correlated to the exposure dose. The growth performance, measured by weight increase, was MS>LS>NS, while HS antibiotics retarded the growth. SMZ-exposed O. niloticus had an increased number of fat particles in the liver and a change in the content of intestinal SCFAs. Moreover, SMZ exposure changed the biological diversity of the intestinal flora and subsequently induced microbiota dysbiosis, primarily inhibiting the growth of Fusobacteria, especially in HS group. Overall, exposure to higher SMZ doses than the recommended ones impair general intestinal functions and provokes health risk in fish. This study highlights the importance of rational and regulated use of SMZ in aquaculture.
