Synthesis, characterization and rheological behavior of pH sensitive poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogels

Development of pH-Sensitive hydrogel for advanced wound Healing: Graft copolymerization of locust bean gum with acrylamide and acrylic acid

Wounds pose a formidable challenge in healthcare, necessitating the exploration of innovative tissue-healing solutions. Traditional wound dressings exhibit drawbacks, causing tissue damage and impeding natural healing. Using a Microwave (MW)-)-assisted technique, we envisaged a novel hydrogel (Hg) scaffold to address these challenges. This hydrogel scaffold was created by synthesizing a pH-responsive crosslinked material, specifically locust bean gum-grafted-poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) [LBG-g-poly(AAm-co-AAc)], to enable sustained release of c-phycocyanin (C-Pc). Synthesized LBG-g-poly(AAm-co-AAc) was fine-tuned by adjusting various synthetic parameters, including the concentration of monomers, duration of reaction, and MW irradiation intensity, to maximize the yield of crosslinked LBG grafted product and enhance encapsulation efficiency of C-Pc. Following its synthesis, LBG-g-poly(AAm-co-AAc) was thoroughly characterized using advanced techniques, like XRD, TGA, FTIR, NMR, and SEM, to analyze its structural and chemical properties. Moreover, the study examined the in-vitro C-Pc release profile from LBG-g-poly(AAm-co-AAc) based hydrogel (HgCPcLBG). Findings revealed that the maximum release of C-Pc (64.12 ± 2.69 %) was achieved at pH 7.4 over 48 h. Additionally, HgCPcLBG exhibited enhanced antioxidant performance and compatibility with blood. In vivo studies confirmed accelerated wound closure, and ELISA findings revealed reduced inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) within treated skin tissue, suggesting a positive impact on injury repair. A low-cost and eco-friendly approach for creating LBG-g-poly(AAm-co-AAc) and HgCPcLBG has been developed. This method achieved sustained release of C-Pc, which could be a significant step forward in wound care technology.

Preparation and application of curcumin loaded with citric acid crosslinked chitosan-gelatin hydrogels

While oral administration offers safety benefits, its therapeutic efficacy is hindered by various physiological factors within the body. In this study, a novel approach was explored using a matrix consisting of 2 % chitosan and 2 % gelatin, with citric acid (CA) serving as a green cross-linking agent (ranging from 0.4 % to 1.0 %), and curcumin (Cur) as the model drug to formulate hydrogel carriers. The results showed that a 0.4 % CA concentration, the hydrogel (CGA0.4) reached swelling equilibrium in deionized water within 40 min, exhibiting a maximum swelling index was 539 g/g. The addition of Cur to the CGA hydrogel (CGACur) notably enhanced release efficiency, particularly in simulated intestinal fluid, where Cur release rates exceeded 40 % within 100 min compared to below 8 % in other solutions. Among these hydrogels, CGA0.4Cur exhibited the fastest degradation rate in the combined solution, reaching >90 % degradation after 7 days. Additionally, Cur and CA demonstrated positive effects on the tensile strength, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity of hydrogels. Compare to the bioaccessibility of CGC (27 %), those of CGACur had increased to over 34 %. These findings offer provide theoretical support for CA-crosslinked chitosan/gelatin gels in delivering hydrophobic bioactive molecules and their application in intestinal drug delivery system.

Biomedical applications of stimuli-responsive "smart" interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels

In recent years, owing to the ongoing advancements in polymer materials, hydrogels have found increasing applications in the biomedical domain, notably in the realm of stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels. Nonetheless, conventional single-network stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels frequently exhibit deficiencies, including low mechanical strength, limited biocompatibility, and extended response times. In response, researchers have addressed these challenges by introducing a second network to create stimuli-responsive "smart" Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) hydrogels. The mechanical strength of the material can be significantly improved due to the topological entanglement and physical interactions within the interpenetrating structure. Simultaneously, combining different network structures enhances the biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness of the gel, endowing it with unique properties such as cell adhesion, conductivity, hemostasis/antioxidation, and color-changing capabilities. This article primarily aims to elucidate the stimulus-inducing factors in stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels, the impact of the gels on cell behaviors and their biomedical application range. Additionally, we also offer an in-depth exposition of their categorization, mechanisms, performance characteristics, and related aspects. This review furnishes a comprehensive assessment and outlook for the advancement of stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels within the biomedical arena. We believe that, as the biomedical field increasingly demands novel materials featuring improved mechanical properties, robust biocompatibility, and heightened stimulus responsiveness, stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels will hold substantial promise for wide-ranging applications in this domain.

Fabrication and Characterization of Taro (Colocasia esculenta)-Mucilage-Based Nanohydrogel for Shelf-Life Extension of Fresh-Cut Apples

Taro mucilage is a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and water-soluble edible viscous polysaccharide, which possesses diverse techno-functional properties including gelling and anti-microbial. Therefore, the objective of this study was to formulate and evaluate the efficacy of taro mucilage nanohydrogel for the shelf-life enhancement of fresh-cut apples. Taro mucilage was extracted using cold water extraction, and the yield of mucilage was found to be 2.95 ± 0.35% on a dry basis. Different concentrations of mucilage (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5%) were used to formulate the nanohydrogel. A smaller droplet size of 175.61 ± 0.92 nm was observed at 3% mucilage, with a zeta potential of -30.25 ± 0.94 mV. Moreover, FTIR data of nanohydrogel revealed the functional groups of various sugars, uronic acids, and proteins. Thermal analysis of nanohydrogel exhibited weight loss in three phases, and maximum weight loss occurred from 110.25 °C to 324.27 °C (65.16%). Nanohydrogel showed shear-thinning fluid or pseudo-plastic behavior. Coating treatment of nanohydrogel significantly reduced the weight loss of fresh-cut apples (8.72 ± 0.46%) as compared to the control sample (12.25 ± 0.78%) on the 10th day. In addition, minor changes were observed in the pH for both samples during the 10 days of storage. Titrable acidity of control fresh-cut apples measured 0.22 ± 0.05% on day 0, rising to 0.42 ± 0.03% on the 10th day, and for coated fresh-cut apples, it was observed to be 0.24 ± 0.07% on the 0th day and 0.36 ± 0.06% on 10th day, respectively. Furthermore, the total soluble solids (TSS) content of both control and coated fresh-cut apples measured on the 0th day was 11.85 ± 0.65% and 12.33 ± 0.92%, respectively. On the 10th day, these values were significantly increased (p < 0.05) to 16.38 ± 0.42% for the control and 14.26 ± 0.39% for the coated sliced apples, respectively. Nanohydrogel-coated fresh-cut apples retained antioxidant activity and vitamin C content as compared to the control sample. Taro mucilage nanohydrogel-based edible coating showed distinct anti-microbial activity against psychrotrophic, aerobic, and yeast molds. In summary, taro mucilage nanohydrogel can be used as a cost-effective natural coating material for the shelf-life enhancement or freshness maintenance of fresh-cut apples.

Injectable Chitosan-Methoxy Polyethylene Glycol Hybrid Hydrogel Untangling the Wound Healing Behavior: In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation

Wound healing, particularly for difficult-to-treat wounds, presents a serious threat and may lead to complications. Currently available dressings lack mucoadhesion, safety, efficacy, and, most importantly, patient compliance. Herein, we developed a unique, simple, and inexpensive injectable chitosan-methoxy polyethylene glycol (chitosan-mPEG) hybrid hydrogel with tunable physicochemical and mechanical properties for wound healing. The detailed physicochemical and rheological characterization of the chitosan-mPEG hydrogel has revealed chemical interaction between available -NH2 groups of chitosan and -COOH groups of mPEG acid, which, to our perspective, enhanced the mechanical and wound healing properties of hybrid chitosan and mPEG hydrogel compared to solo chitosan or PEG hydrogel. By introducing mPEG, the wound healing ability of hydrogel is synergistically improved due to its antibacterial feature, together with chitosan's innate role in hemostasis and wound closure. The detailed hemostasis and wound closure potential of the chitosan-mPEG hydrogel were investigated in a rat model, which confirmed a significant acceleration in wound healing and ultimately wound closure. In conclusion, the developed chitosan-mPEG hydrogel met all the required specifications and could be developed as a promising material for hemostasis, especially wound management, and as an excellent candidate for wound healing application.

A novel double-network hydrogel made from electrolytic manganese slag and polyacrylic acid-polyacrylamide for removal of heavy metals in wastewater

Electrolytic manganese slag (EMS), a bulk waste generated in industrial electrolytic manganese production, can be a cost-effective adsorbent for heavy metals removal after appropriate modification. In this study, EMS was activated by NaOH and then used to make the EMS-based double-network hydrogel (an EMS/PAA hydrogel) via a one-pot method. The results showed that the EMS/PAA hydrogel exhibits a high selective adsorption capacity of 153.85, 113.63 and 54.35 mg·g-1 for Pb (II), Cd (II) and Cu (II), respectively. In addition, Density Functional Theory (DFT) suggests that the adsorption energies (Ead) of Pb, Cd and Cu on SiO2/PAA of the EMS/PAA gels are - 4.15, - 1.96, and - 2.83 eV, respectively, and SiO2/PAA, with a strong affinity to Pb2+, is one of the reasons for the selective adsorption capacity of EMS/PAA gel for Pb2+. The removal efficiency of the EMS/PAA gel for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ decreased after four adsorption-desorption cycles by 20.00 %, 24.56 % and 46.56 %, respectively. Mechanism studies suggested that the elimination of the heavy metals by EMS/PAA gels mainly involves electrostatic attraction, inner-sphere complexation, and coordination interactions. The EMS/PAA hydrogels not only have high adsorption capacity, but are also easy to prepare and circulate, making them ideal for practical applications.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan hydrogel incorporating chitooligosaccharide-gentisic acid conjugate with antioxidant and antibacterial properties as a potential wound dressing

The design and development of wound dressing with antioxidant and antibacterial properties to accelerate wound healing remain challenging. In this study, we synthesize a chitooligosaccharide-gentisic acid (COS-GSA) conjugate using the free-radical grafting method, and fabricate a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/chitosan (CH)/COS-GSA (PVA/CH/CG) hydrogel using a freeze-thaw method. We characterize the synthesized COS-GSA conjugates using through polyphenol assay, absorbance, and 1H NMR spectroscopy and evaluate their antioxidant properties. The COS-GSA conjugates are successfully synthesized and exhibit better antioxidant properties than pristine COSs. Subsequently, the fabricated hydrogel is characterized based on its morphological analysis, rheological properties, water contact angle, swelling, degradation, water retention properties, and COS-GSA release profiles. Finally, the biocompatibility of the fabricated hydrogel is evaluated on HDF and HaCaT cells through indirect and direct cytotoxicity. The PVA/CH/CG hydrogel exhibited significantly higher antioxidant properties (DPPH, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activities) and antibacterial activities (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) compared to other fabricated hydrogels such as PVA, PVA/CH, and PVA/CH/COS (PVA/CH/C). These results provide evidence that PVA/CH/CG hydrogels with antioxidant, antibacterial, and non-cytotoxic properties have great potential for wound-dressing applications.

Removal of Malachite Green by Poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) Hydrogels: Analysis of Coulombic and Hydrogen Bond Donor-Acceptor Interactions

Water pollution caused by dyes poses a significant threat to life on earth. Poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogels are widely used to treat wastewater from various pollutants. This study aims to examine the removal of malachite green (MG), a harmful and persistent dye that could cause extensive environmental damage, from an aqueous solution by adjusting the initial concentration of acrylamide (AM) and the degree of copolymer crosslinking. The copolymer hydrogels efficiently eliminate MG in a brief timeframe. The most successful hydrogel accomplished a removal rate exceeding 96%. The copolymer of 4 wt % 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate and a concentration of 100 mg/mL AM was effective. The degree of swelling was affected by crosslinking density as expected, with low crosslinking ratios resulting in significant swelling and high ratios resulting in less swelling. To evaluate the results, a docking approach was used which presented three crosslinked models: low, medium, and high. The copolymer-dye hydrogel system displayed robust hydrogen bonding interactions, as confirmed by the high quantities of both donors and acceptors. It was determined that MG contains six rotatable bonds, enabling it to adapt and interact with the copolymer chains. The dye and copolymer enhance H-bond formation by providing two hydrogen bond donors and 16 hydrogen bond acceptors, respectively. Through capitalizing on cationic and anionic effects, the ionic MG/copolymer hydrogel system improves retention efficiency by enhancing attraction between opposing charges. It is interesting to note that the synthesized copolymer is able to remove 96.4% of MG from aqueous media within one hour of contact time.

Development and Gelation Mechanism of Ultra-High-Temperature-Resistant Polymer Gel

To expand the applicability of gel fracturing fluids in ultra-high-temperature reservoirs, a temperature-resistant polymer was synthesized using the solution polymerization method. Subsequently, an ultra-high-temperature-resistant polymer gel was formulated by incorporating an organic zirconium crosslinking agent. A comprehensive investigation was carried out to systematically study and evaluate the steady shear property, dynamic viscoelasticity, and temperature and shear resistance performance, as well as the core damage characteristics of the polymer gel. The obtained results demonstrate that the viscosity remained at 147 mPa·s at a temperature of 200 °C with a shear rate of 170 s-1. Compared with the significant 30.9% average core damage rate observed in the guanidine gum fracturing fluid, the core damage attributed to the polymer gel was substantially mitigated, measuring only 16.6%. Finally, the gelation mechanism of the polymer gel was scrutinized in conjunction with microscopic morphology analysis. We expect that this study will not only contribute to the effective development of deep and ultradeep oil and gas reservoirs but also furnish a theoretical foundation for practical field applications.

Synthesis of New Hydrogels Involving Acrylic Acid and Acrylamide Grafted Agar-Agar and Their Application in the Removal of Cationic Dyes from Wastewater

Polyacrylic Acid grafted Agar-agar (AAc-graf-Agar), and polyacrylamide grafted Agar-Agar (AAm-graf-Agar) have been synthesised by free radical polymerisation route initiated by ammonium peroxodisulphate (APS), the grafted polymers were characterised by FTIR, TGA and SEM methods. The swelling properties were studied in deionised water and saline solution at room temperature. The prepared hydrogels were examined by removing cationic methylene blue (MB) dye from the aqueous solution, in which the adsorption kinetics and isotherms models were also investigated. It was found that the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir equations are the most suitable for the different sorption processes. The maximum dye adsorption capacity was 1035.96 mg∙g^-1 for AAc-graf-Agar in pH medium 12 and 1015.7 mg∙g^-1 for AAm-graf-Agar in neutral pH medium. This indicates that the AAc-graf-Agar hydrogel could be an excellent adsorbent for removing MB from aqueous solutions.

Designing Nanoliposome-in-Natural Hydrogel Hybrid System for Controllable Release of Essential Oil in Gastrointestinal Tract: A Novel Vehicle

In this study, thyme essential oil (essential oil to total lipid: 14.23, 20, 25, and 33.33%)-burdened nanoliposomes with/without maltodextrin solution were infused with natural hydrogels fabricated using equal volumes (1:1, v/v) of pea protein (30%) and gum Arabic (1.5%) solutions. The production process of the solutions infused with gels was verified using FTIR spectroscopy. In comparison to the nanoliposome solution (NL₁) containing soybean lecithin and essential oil, the addition of maltodextrin (molar ratio of lecithin to maltodextrin: 0.80, 0.40, and 0.20 for NL₂, NL₃, and NL₄, respectively) to these solutions led to a remarkable shift in particle size (487.10-664.40 nm), negative zeta potential (23.50-38.30 mV), and encapsulation efficiency (56.25-67.62%) values. Distortions in the three-dimensional structure of the hydrogel (H2) constructed in the presence of free (uncoated) essential oil were obvious in the photographs when compared to the control (H1) consisting of a pea protein-gum Arabic matrix. Additionally, the incorporation of NL₁ caused visible deformations in the gel (HNL₁). Porous surfaces were dominant in H1 and the hydrogels (HNL₂, HNL₃, and HNL₄) containing NL₂, NL₃, and NL₄ in the SEM images. The most convenient values for functional behaviors were found in H1 and HNL₄, followed by HNL₃, HNL₂, HNL₁, and H2. This hierarchical order was also valid for mechanical properties. The prominent hydrogels in terms of essential oil delivery throughout the simulated gastrointestinal tract were HNL₂, HNL₃, and HNL₄. To sum up, findings showed the necessity of mediators such as maltodextrin in the establishment of such systems.

New Self-Healing Metallosupramolecular Copolymers with a Complex of Cobalt Acrylate and 4′-Phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine

Currently, the chemistry of self-healing polymers is aimed not only at obtaining materials with high self-healing efficiency, but also at improving their mechanical performance. This paper reports on a successful attempt to obtain self-healing copolymers films of acrylic acid, acrylamide and a new metal-containing complex of cobalt acrylate with a 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine ligand. Samples of the formed copolymer films were characterized by ATR/FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, DSC and TGA, SAXS, WAXS and XRD studies. The incorporation of the metal-containing complex directly into the polymer chain results in an excellent tensile strength (122 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (4.3 GPa) of the obtained films. The resulting copolymers demonstrated self-healing properties both at acidic pH (assisted by HCl healing) with effective preservation of mechanical properties, and autonomously in a humid atmosphere at room temperature without the use of initiators. At the same time, with a decrease in the content of acrylamide, a decrease in the reducing properties was observed, possibly due to an insufficient amount of amide groups to form hydrogen bonds through the interface with terminal carboxyl groups, as well as a decrease in the stability of complexes in samples with a high content of acrylic acid.

Adding knowledge to the design of safer hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic) acids: an ecotoxicological approach

The architecture of hydrophobically modified polymers can be tailored to produce variants with different levels of functionality. This allows industry to apply rational design methods for the development of more environmentally friendly materials. In the present work, the ecotoxicity of six variants of hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic) acids (HMPAA), obtained by changing the crosslinked conformation, insertion position, and length of the hydrophobic groups, was assessed for the (i) bioluminescence production of Aliivibrio fischeri; (ii) population growth rate of Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris; (iii) mortality of Brachionus calyciflorus; (iv) feeding inhibition, somatic growth rate, reproduction, and mortality of Daphnia magna; and (iv) mortality and somatic growth rate of Pelophylax perezi tadpoles. The concentrations causing 50% and 20% of effects (L(E)C50 and 20, respectively) ranged from 9.64 up to > 2000 mg·L-1 for all six HMPAA and species. The bacterium A. fischeri and tadpoles of P. perezi were the most sensitive and most tolerant organisms to the six tested HMPAA, respectively. The computed 5% hazard concentrations (computed on the basis of L(E)C50 s) showed that HMPAA1 (13.0 mg·L-1) and HMPAA2 (26.1 mg·L-1) were the most toxic variants, while HMPAA6 (233 mg·L-1) the least one. These results suggest HMPAA6 (with low crosslink percentage modified by the addition of long and short hydrophobic groups at the surface) to be the most environmentally friendly variant and should be preferentially considered to be used in consumer products, compared to the other five studied variants.

Effect of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid salt) on anti-aging properties and adhesion between acrylonitrile butadiene rubber and polyester fabric

In this study, a multifunction polymeric adhesion promoter and anti-aging compound based on the triethanolamine salt of acrylamide acrylic acid copolymer (COS) was prepared and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The impact of different COS contents on the tensile, adhesion, and thermal properties of NBR composite and NBR/PET sandwich was evaluated. The NBR composites containing COS displayed good retention of their mechanical properties with increasing thermal ageing time, while the composite without COS showed a decrease in its mechanical properties. The highest tensile strength (17.5 MPa with a retention value of 0.6%) after 7 days of thermal aging was recorded for NBR composite, which contains 5 phr (parts per hundred parts of rubber) of COS (COS 5), compared to NBR composite without COS (COS 0), which recorded 15.1 MPa with a retention value of -27.4%. In addition, the COS 5 composite displayed an improvement in peel strength of 16.4% compared to the COS 0. The results of the thermogarvemetric analysis (TGA) supported the anti-thermal ageing effect of COS, where the initial decomposition temperature (Ti) value increased by 11.7 and 9.3 °C, after addition of 5 and 10 phr of COS to NBR composite, respectively. In addition, the other thermogravemetric parameters investigated displayed a significant increase in their values, which confirms the improvement in thermal stability of NBR composite in the presence of COS. Also, the air permeability of the PET/NBR sandwich decreased by 80% after the addition of 7.5 phr of COS.

Development of Tofacitinib Loaded pH-Responsive Chitosan/Mucin Based Hydrogel Microparticles: In-Vitro Characterization and Toxicological Screening

Tofacitinib is an antirheumatic drug characterized by a short half-life and poor permeability, which necessitates the development of sustained release formulation with enhanced permeability potential. To achieve this goal, the free radical polymerization technique was employed to develop mucin/chitosan copolymer methacrylic acid (MU-CHI-Co-Poly (MAA))-based hydrogel microparticles. The developed hydrogel microparticles were characterized for EDX, FTIR, DSC, TGA, X-ray diffraction, SEM, drug loading; equilibrium swelling (%), in vitro drug release, sol–gel (%) studies, size and zeta potential, permeation, anti-arthritic activities, and acute oral toxicity studies. FTIR studies revealed the incorporation of the ingredients into the polymeric network, while EDX studies depicted the successful loading of tofacitinib into the network. The thermal analysis confirmed the heat stability of the system. SEM analysis displayed the porous structure of the hydrogels. Gel fraction showed an increasing tendency (74–98%) upon increasing the concentrations of the formulation ingredients. Formulations coated with Eudragit (2% w/w) and sodium lauryl sulfate (1% w/v) showed increased permeability. The formulations equilibrium swelling (%) increased (78–93%) at pH 7.4. Maximum drug loading and release (%) of (55.62–80.52%) and (78.02–90.56%), respectively, were noticed at pH 7.4, where the developed microparticles followed zero-order kinetics with case II transport. Anti-inflammatory studies revealed a significant dose-dependent decrease in paw edema in the rats. Oral toxicity studies confirmed the biocompatibility and non-toxicity of the formulated network. Thus, the developed pH-responsive hydrogel microparticles seem to have the potential to enhance permeability and control the delivery of tofacitinib for the management of rheumatoid arthritis.

Preparation of novel β-CD/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogels by frontal polymerization

In this paper, betaine (Bet) was used as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), and acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) were used as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) and mixed to form a deep eutectic solvent (DES). Different concentrations of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were dispersed in the DES, and a novel β-CD/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogel was prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The characteristic structure and morphology of the hydrogels were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the properties of the hydrogels were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were improved by β-CD acting as a second cross-linking agent in the polymerization process, thus increasing the cross-link density of the hydrogel. Because the carboxyl groups contained in the acrylic acid dissociate under alkaline conditions, the composite hydrogel shows excellent pH responsiveness under alkaline conditions. Tetracycline hydrochloride was used as a drug model to test the drug loading and drug release performance of the hydrogels. With the increase of β-CD content, the loading capacity of the hydrogels for tetracycline hydrochloride gradually increased. The data of drug release indicated that the hydrogel has good drug delivery performance and has promising applications in drug delivery systems and other areas.

Gum katira-silver nanoparticle-based bionanocomposite for the removal of methyl red dye

The present study aimed to synthesize gum katira-silver nanoparticle-based bionanocomposite. Different characterization techniques were used to analyze the synthesized bionanocomposite, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). AgNPs were formed and were 6-20 nm in size. Thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that synthesized nanocomposites are more thermally stable than gum katira. All the reaction conditions, such as time, temperature, pH, solvent, amount of nanoparticles, the concentration of the initiator, crosslinker, and monomer were optimized with respect to swelling. The results showed that the highest percentage swelling (Ps) of Gk-cl-poly(AA) was 796%, and 867% of AgNPs were imbibed by Gk-cl-poly(acrylic acid)-AgNPs. Synthesized bionanocomposite was used as an adsorbent material for the adsorption of methyl red (MR) dye. The effects of different reaction conditions were also optimized to attain maximum adsorption of MR dye. The maximum dye adsorption through Gk-cl-poly(AA)-AgNPs bionanocomposite was 95.7%. Diverse kinetic and isotherm models were used to study the adsorption data. The R ² value was established as 0.987 and k₂ was .02671. The greater R ² value of second-order kinetics over first-order kinetics suggested that MR adsorption by nanocomposite is best explained by pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating that dye adsorption occurred through chemisorption. The R ² value was determined to be .9954. The correlation coefficient values of Gk-cl-poly(AA)-AgNPs were best fitted by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Overall, synthesized bionanocomposite is a proficient material for removing of MR dye from wastewater.

Development and Optimization of Tamarind Gum-β-Cyclodextrin-g-Poly(Methacrylate) pH-Responsive Hydrogels for Sustained Delivery of Acyclovir

Acyclovir has a short half-life and offers poor bioavailability. Its daily dose is 200 mg five times a day. A tamarind gum and β-cyclodextrin-based pH-responsive hydrogel network for sustained delivery of acyclovir was developed using the free-radical polymerization technique. Developed networks were characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA, PXRD, EDX, and SEM. The effect of varying feed ratios of polymers, monomers, and crosslinker on the gel fraction, swelling, and release was also investigated. FTIR findings confirmed the compatibility of the ingredients in a new complex polymer. The thermal stability of acyclovir was increased within the newly synthesized polymer. SEM photomicrographs confirmed the porous texture of hydrogels. The gel fraction was improved (from 90.12% to 98.12%) with increased reactant concentrations. The pH of the dissolution medium and the reactant contents affected swelling dynamics and acyclovir release from the developed carrier system. Based on the R2 value, the best-fit model was zero-order kinetics with non-Fickian diffusion as a release mechanism. The biocompatibility of the developed network was confirmed through hematology, LFT, RFT, lipid profile, and histopathological examinations. No sign of pathology, necrosis, or abrasion was observed. Thus, a pH-responsive and biocompatible polymeric system was developed for sustained delivery of acyclovir to reduce the dosing frequency and improve patient compliance.

Core-shell fibremats comprising a poly(AM/DAAM)/ADH nanofibre core and nylon6 shell layer are an attractive immobilization platform for constructing immobilised enzymes

Core-shell fibremats, comprising poly(acrylamide)-co-poly(diacetone-acrylamide)/adipic dihydrazide [poly(AM/DAAM)/ADH] core-nanofibres and hydrophobic polymer shell layers, are a new class of platforms for constructing various immobilised enzymes. In this study, to elucidate the impacts of the shell-layer material on fibremat properties and enzymatic activities, we synthesised core-shell fibremats with shell layers comprising nylon6 or acetyl cellulose (AcCel) instead of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), as in our previous study. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the lactase-encapsulated poly(AM/DAAM)/ADH-nylon6 and -AcCel fibremats were both constructed like the poly(AM/DAAM)/ADH-PCL one. Leakage measurements of the beforehand loaded molecules inside the core-nanofibres revealed that both fibremats exhibited efficient permeability for low-molecular-weight molecules and stable retention of enzyme molecules inside the core-nanofibres. Meanwhile, the fibremats' mechanical properties considerably depended on the choice of shell-layer material. The thermal analyses of the lactase-encapsulated fibremats revealed residual water inside the core nanofibres. The core-shell fibremats fabricated with a nylon6 or PCL shell exhibited excellent enzymatic activities (102 and 114%, respectively, compared to that of free lactase), superior to that of the same amount of free enzyme in a buffer. Furthermore, both core-shell fibremats retained over 95% of their initial enzymatic activities, even after they were re-used 10 times.

Physicomechanical and Morphological Characterization of Multi-Structured Potassium-Acrylate-Based Hydrogels

In this work, a photo-polymerization route was used to obtain potassium acrylate-co-acrylamide hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties, well-defined microstructures in the dry state, and unique meso- and macrostructures in the hydrated state. The properties of the hydrogels depended on the concentration of the crosslinking agent. Mechanical properties, swelling capacity, and morphology were analyzed, showing a well-defined transition at a critical concentration of the crosslinker. In terms of morphology, shape-evolving surface patterns appeared at different scales during swelling. These surface structures had a noticeable influence on the mechanical properties. Hydrogels with structures exhibited better mechanical properties compared to unstructured hydrogels. The critical crosslinking concentration reported in this work (using glycerol diacrylate) is a reference point for the future preparation of multistructured acrylic hydrogel with enhanced properties.

Superlubricity of pH-responsive hydrogels in extreme environments

Poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AAm-co-AA)) hydrogels are highly tunable and pH-responsive materials frequently used in biomedical applications. The swelling behavior and mechanical properties of these gels have been extensively characterized and are thought to be controlled by the protonation state of the acrylic acid (AA) through the regulation of solution pH. However, their tribological properties have been underexplored. Here, we hypothesized that electrostatics and the protonation state of AA would drive the tribological properties of these polyelectrolyte gels. P(AAm-co-AA) hydrogels were prepared with constant acrylamide (AAm) concentration (33 wt%) and varying AA concentration to control the amount of ionizable groups in the gel. The monomer:crosslinker molar ratio (200:1) was kept constant. Hydrogel swelling, stiffness, and friction behavior were studied by systematically varying the acrylic acid (AA) concentration from 0–12 wt% and controlling solution pH (0.35, 7, 13.8) and ionic strength (I = 0 or 0.25 M). The stiffness and friction coefficient of bulk hydrogels were evaluated using a microtribometer and borosilicate glass probes as countersurfaces. The swelling behavior and elastic modulus of these polyelectrolyte hydrogels were highly sensitive to solution pH and poorly predicted the friction coefficient (µ), which decreased with increasing AA concentration. P(AAm-co-AA) hydrogels with the greatest AA concentrations (12 wt%) exhibited superlubricity (µ = 0.005 ± 0.001) when swollen in unbuffered, deionized water (pH = 7, I = 0 M) and 0.5 M NaOH (pH = 13.8, I = 0.25 M) (µ = 0.005 ± 0.002). Friction coefficients generally decreased with increasing AA and increasing solution pH. We postulate that tunable lubricity in P(AAm-co-AA) gels arises from changes in the protonation state of acrylic acid and electrostatic interactions between the probe and hydrogel surface.

Viscoelasticity of Low-Molecular-Weight Polyelectrolytes

Shear-thickening fluids that absorb the impact energy of high-velocity projectiles are of great interest for aerospace and body-armor applications. In such a frame, we investigate transient states of neat and aqueous polyelectrolytes (PE) having low molecular weights and containing poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium) as polycations and poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) as polyanions. We compare results with those of bulk water. We employ nonequilibrium molecular dynamics to simulate oscillatory shear, mainly in the linear viscoelastic regime. We find that neat PE exhibits properties of a viscoelastic solid, whereas water and the aqueous mixture of PE conform to viscoelastic liquids with Maxwellian behavior at low angular frequencies. Terminal relaxation times are ∼0.499 and ∼1.385 ps for water and the aqueous mixture of PE, respectively. At high angular frequencies, storage moduli show anomalous behaviors that correspond to transitions between shear thinning and shear thickening in complex shear viscosities. The change in potential energy with the increase of the angular frequency is mainly driven by intramolecular interactions for neat PE, whereas short-range Coulomb interactions are the major contributions for water and the aqueous mixture of PE. Upon observation of the molecular configurations, only the local polyionic structure in the aqueous mixture of PE shows improvement when increasing the angular frequency, whereas the rest remains barely affected. Thus, the water structure in the aqueous mixture of PE allows the storage of energy elastically through the hydrogen-bond network at large angular frequencies, whereas the mechanical contribution of polyions weakens and fully vanishes at the beginning of shear thinning, explaining the superimposed data with data of bulk water. Our method and findings set the path for future molecular simulations in the nonlinear viscoelastic regime with more complex underlying molecular mechanisms.

Radiation synthesis and anticancer drug delivery of poly(acrylic acid/acrylamide) magnetite hydrogel

Hydrogels had gained considerable importance in drug delivery systems. Polyacrylic acid/acrylamide (AAc/AAm) and polyacrylic acid/acrylamide doped with magnetite (AAc/AAm)Fe3O4 hydrogels have been prepared by ɣ-radiations and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffractions (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmittance electron microscope (TEM). The morphology and the particle size were determined from TEM images. The average particle size of Fe3O4 was found to be 12 nm. The degree of cross-linking of Poly (AAc/AAm) hydrogel was determined from the gel fraction at different radiation doses and compositions. Swelling of the hydrogel was studied at different conditions. The magnetism of (AAc/AAm) Fe3O4 was studied by vibrating sample magnetometer and the results indicated super-paramagnetic character of (AAc/AAm)Fe3O4. The band gap (Eg) was determined and the values suggested semi-conductivity of the hydrogels. Doxorubicin loading and release by (AAc/AAm)Fe3O4 hydrogel was studied and indicated that the hydrogel can load 78% of doxorubicin.

Dynamic Pressure Measurements During Vitrectomy in a Model of the Eye

Purpose

To accurately evaluate pressure changes during vitrectomy in a rigid model of the vitreous chamber and to test the efficiency of the EVA phacovitrectomy system (Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center) in terms of compensation of intraocular pressure variations.

Methods

We tested 23-, 25-, and 27-gauge double-blade vitreous cutters in both vented global pressure control and automatic infusion compensation (AIC) modes in a vitreous chamber model, mimicking the real surgical procedure. Balanced salt solution and artificial vitreous, similar to the real vitreous body, were used. We tested both standard-flow (SF) and high-flow (HF) infusion systems, varying the infusion pressure between 20 and 40 mm Hg. In each experiment, flow rate was also measured.

Results

Pressure drop was rapidly and efficiently compensated when 23- and 25-gauge cutters were used in AIC mode, with infusion pressures ranging between 30 and 55 mm Hg. The 27-gauge cutter was less efficient in compensating pressure variations. Pressure fluctuations related to the high-frequency motion of the cutter blade were small compared to the overall pressure variations. The use of the HF infusion system resulted in larger flow rates and lower pressure changes compared to the SF infusion system.

Conclusions

Despite the rigid material of the model, the present pressure measurements are in line with previous studies performed on porcine eye. The use of AIC mode compensates intraoperative pressure drops efficiently, with both 23- and 25-gauge cutters. The HF infusion system is more efficient than the SF infusion system.

Translational Relevance

The AIC infusion mode efficiently compensates intraoperative pressure drops, in both 23- and 25-gauge experimental vitrectomy. The HF infusion system resulted in larger flow rate and lower pressure changes.

Thioflavin-modified molecularly imprinted hydrogel for fluorescent-based non-enzymatic glucose detection in wound exudate

The concentration of glucose in the body's fluids is an important parameter that can indicate pathological conditions such as the progress of infected wounds. Several wearables and implantable detection approaches have been developed with high selectivity and sensitivity for glucose. However, all of them have drawbacks such as low stability, limited selectivity, and often require complex technology. In this work, we present a fluorescent-based cost-efficient imprinted hydrogel (MIH_GSH) capable of detecting glucose within 30 ​min. The imprinting approach allows us to improve the selectivity for glucose, overcoming the low specificity and limited binding efficiency at neutral pH of boronic acid-based detection mechanisms. The binding affinity determined for glucose-MIH_GSH was indeed 6-fold higher than the one determined for the non-imprinted hydrogel with a calculated imprinting factor of 1.7. The limit of detection of MIH_GSH for glucose in artificial wound exudate was calculated as 0.48 ​mM at pH 7.4 proving the suitability of the proposed approach to diagnose chronic wounds (ca. 1 ​mM). MIH_GSH was compared with a commercial colorimetric assay for the quantification of glucose in wound exudate specimens collected from hospitalized patients. The results obtained with the two methods were statistically similar confirming the robustness of our approach. Importantly, whereas with the colorimetric assay sample preparation was required to limit the interference of the sample background, the fluorescent signal of MIH_GSH was not affected even when used to measure glucose directly in bloody samples. The sensing mechanism here proposed can pave the way for the development of cost-efficient and wearable point-of-care tools capable of monitoring the glucose level in wound exudate enabling the quick assessment of chronic injuries.

A Novel Superabsorbent Polymer from Crosslinked Carboxymethyl Tragacanth Gum with Glutaraldehyde: Synthesis, Characterization, and Swelling Properties

Nowadays, current global environmental problems include measures to eliminate or reduce the negative impact of chemicals from petroleum sources and, therefore, the use of materials from natural resources is increasingly recommended. In this context, natural-based superabsorbent polymers derived from polypeptides and polysaccharides have undergone chemical and biochemical modifications to improve their ability to absorb and retain large amounts of liquids. In the present paper, a new process has been used to overcome the side effects of radical polymerization in the manufacture of conventional polyacrylate superabsorbents (SAPs). Tragacanth gum (TG) was selected to prepare a new superabsorbent material (CMTG-GA) based on carboxymethyl tragacanth (CMTG) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA). The characterization of the polymer was carried out by FTIR, TGA, XRD, and SEM. The effect of the amount of crosslinking agent and the pH on the water absorption capacity was also examined. Subsequently, swelling studies were performed using free swelling capacity (FSC) and centrifuge retention capacity (CRC) techniques in distilled water, tap water, and saline solution. The results showed that the CRC of the new material is not less than 42.1 g/g, which was observed for a ratio of 20% by weight of GA to CMTG. Likewise, the maximum absorption results were 43.9 and 32.14 g/g, respectively, for FSC and CRC at pH 8.0. In addition, a comparison of the swelling capacities of the synthesized product with a commercial SAP extracted from a baby diaper, well known in the Moroccan market, showed that the performances were very similar.

Assessing the viability of carbamoylethyl pullulan-g-stearic acid based smart polymeric micelles for tumor targeting of raloxifene

The present investigation entails the synthesis of smart pullulan polymeric micelles for evaluating its tumor targeting potential. For this purpose, two step polymerization synthesis reactions were conducted. In the first step, carbamoylethylation occurs by reaction of the free alcoholic moieties at 6th position of glucopyranose unit of pullulan with acrylamide in presence of alkali to obtain carbamoylethyl pullulan (CmP). In the second step, CmP undergoes graft polymerization with stearic acid (SA) to obtain CmP-g-stearic acid diblock co-polymer (CmP-g-SA) as evident from FTIR and NMR analysis. The XpRD spectra showed crystalline nature that was further confirmed by SEM indicating rough and poly-porous morphology. The QbD based optimized formulations of raloxifene HCl (RLX) loaded polymeric micelles (RLX PMs) exhibited pH-dependent release profile with added advantage of 1.2 times reduction in percentage hemolysis giving substantial compatibility with erythrocytes. In vivo pharmacokinetic performance of RLX PMs suggested enhanced mean residence time and volume of distribution. Besides, the biodistribution study of RLX PMs manifested enhanced entry of RLX in mammary carcinoma tissues as compared to normal tissues suggested that CmP-g-SA based micelles enhanced the anti-tumor activity of RLX. Overall, the findings pointed toward the biocompatibility of CmP-g-SA as a potential carrier system for the delivery of RLX.

Recent advances in polymeric transdermal drug delivery systems

Transdermal delivery has proven to be one of the most favorable methods among novel drug delivery systems. Since drugs administered by transdermal delivery systems avoid the gastrointestinal tract, and thus avoid conversion by the liver, the likelihood of liver dysfunction and gastrointestinal tract irritation as side effects is low. Drug delivery through the skin has other advantages, such as maintaining an effective rate of drug delivery over time, a steady rate of circulation, and the benefits of a passive delivery system and diffusion. Transdermal drug delivery is achieved using patches which consist of different and specific layers. In the last few decades, many types of patches have been approved worldwide, such as medical plasters, which have been generally applied to the skin for localized diseases. Such patches can be traced back to ancient China (around 2000 BCE) and are the early precursors of today's transdermal patches. With the help of effective design, materials, manufacturing, and evaluation, a large number of drugs can now be administered using this valuable advanced technology. This study reviews different types of polymer patches, their advantages and disadvantages, and different studies related to transdermal drug delivery methods, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Different mechanisms of transdermal drug delivery system with patches are also discussed.

Formulation and evaluation of interpenetrating polymeric network for controlled drug delivery

Novel Cytarabine-loaded agarose and fenugreek-based hydrogel were formulated via the crosslinking process. Graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) on agarose and fenugreek was carried out by using methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker and potassium persulfate as an initiator. The influence of different formulation ingredients (fenugreek, agarose, MBA, MAA) on swelling index, percentage drug release, and percentage gel content were investigated. It was observed that an increase in the concentration of fenugreek and agarose resulted in an increase in the swelling index (72.45-97.17%). However, an increase in the amount of MBA led to a decrease in the swelling index from 74.23% to 57.74%. A similar result tendency was noted in the case of drug release. FTIR was employed to elucidate effective grafting. The thermal behavior of hydrogel was evaluated through TGA and DSC analysis whereas surface morphology was elucidated through SEM. Release studies were performed at both acidic and basic pH, that is, 1.2 and 7.4. Hence, formulated biocompatible hydrogels proved to be a promising system for the controlled delivery of Cytarabine.

Self-Assembling Polypeptide Hydrogels as a Platform to Recapitulate the Tumor Microenvironment

Simple Summary

The tumor microenvironment is characterized by increased tissue stiffness, low (acidic) pH, and elevated temperature, all of which contribute to the development of cancer. Improving our in vitro models of cancer, therefore, requires the development of cell culture platforms that can mimic these microenvironmental properties. Here, we study a new biomaterial composed of short amino acid chains that self-assemble into a fibrous hydrogel network. This material enables simultaneous and independent tuning of substrate rigidity, extracellular pH, and temperature, allowing us to mimic both healthy tissues and the tumor microenvironment. We used this platform to study the effect of these conditions on pancreatic cancer cells and found that high substrate rigidity and low pH promote proliferation and survival of cancer cells and activate important signaling pathways associated with cancer progression.

Abstract

The tumor microenvironment plays a critical role in modulating cancer cell migration, metabolism, and malignancy, thus, highlighting the need to develop in vitro culture systems that can recapitulate its abnormal properties. While a variety of stiffness-tunable biomaterials, reviewed here, have been developed to mimic the rigidity of the tumor extracellular matrix, culture systems that can recapitulate the broader extracellular context of the tumor microenvironment (including pH and temperature) remain comparably unexplored, partially due to the difficulty in independently tuning these parameters. Here, we investigate a self-assembled polypeptide network hydrogel as a cell culture platform and demonstrate that the culture parameters, including the substrate stiffness, extracellular pH and temperature, can be independently controlled. We then use this biomaterial as a cell culture substrate to assess the effect of stiffness, pH and temperature on Suit2 cells, a pancreatic cancer cell line, and demonstrate that these microenvironmental factors can regulate two critical transcription factors in cancer: yes-associated protein 1 (YAP) and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1A).

Articular and Artificial Cartilage, Characteristics, Properties and Testing Approaches-A Review

The design and manufacture of artificial tissue for knee joints have been highlighted recently among researchers which necessitates an apt approach for its assessment. Even though most re-searches have focused on specific mechanical or tribological tests, other aspects have remained underexplored. In this review, elemental keys for design and testing artificial cartilage are dis-cussed and advanced methods addressed. Articular cartilage structure, its compositions in load-bearing and tribological properties of hydrogels, mechanical properties, test approaches and wear mechanisms are discussed. Bilayer hydrogels as a niche in tissue artificialization are presented, and recent gaps are assessed.

Neat and Aqueous Polyelectrolytes under a Steady-Shear Flow

Materials enabling impact-energy absorption of high-velocity projectiles are of great interest for applications like aerospace. In such a frame, shear thickening fluids were found very useful. Here, we investigated nanorheological properties of neat and aqueous polyelectrolytes of low molecular weights containing poly([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethyl ammonium) as polycations and poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) as polyanions. Results were compared with pure water. We employed nonequilibrium molecular dynamics with the SLLOD algorithm to compute the viscosity at various shear rates. Systems containing polyelectrolytes exhibit shear thickening. The analysis of molecular configurations revealed a strong disruption of the ionic structure and more clusters with smaller sizes on increasing the shear rate. Potential energies showed that shear thickening originates from an increase in intramolecular and van der Waals interactions resulting from the increasing difficultly of polyelectrolyte-based systems to relax at high shear rates. Our method and findings underscore the importance of accounting for the molecular scale in the design of materials absorbing the impact energy efficiently.

Evaluating Poly(Acrylamide-co-Acrylic Acid) Hydrogels Stress Relaxation to Direct the Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

The aim of this study is to investigate polyacrylamide-based hydrogels stress relaxation and the subsequent impact on the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Different hydrogels are synthesized by varying the amount of cross-linker and the ratio between the monomers (acrylamide and acrylic acid), and characterized by compression tests. It has been found that hydrogels containing 18% of acrylic acid exhibit an average relaxation of 70%, while pure polyacrylamide gels show an average relaxation of 15%. Subsequently, hMSCs are cultured on two different hydrogels functionalized with a mimetic peptide of the bone morphogenetic protein-2 to enable cell adhesion and favor their osteogenic differentiation. Phalloidin staining shows that for a constant stiffness of 55 kPa, a hydrogel with a low relaxation (15%) leads to star-shaped cells, which is typical of osteocytes, while a hydrogel with a high relaxation (70%) presents cells with a polygonal shape characteristic of osteoblasts. Immunofluorescence labeling of E11, strongly expressed in early osteocytes, also shows a dramatically higher expression for cells cultured on the hydrogel with low relaxation (15%). These results clearly demonstrate that, by fine-tuning hydrogels stress relaxation, hMSCs differentiation can be directed toward osteoblasts, and even osteocytes, which is particularly rare in vitro.

A novel assessment of microstructural and mechanical behaviour of bilayer silica-reinforced nanocomposite hydrogels as a candidate for artificial cartilage

The complex structure of healthy articular cartilage facilitates the joint withstanding the imposed pressures and retaining interstitial fluid to lessen stresses on its soft tissue, while easing the locomotion and minimising friction between cartilage mates. Avascular nature of this tissue results in unrecoverable damaged lesions and severe pain over time. Polymeric hydrogels are promising candidate materials for the replacement of the damaged cartilage. Hence, a tough bilayer nanocomposite acrylamide-acrylic acid hydrogel reinforced with silica nanoparticles (SNPs) was designed and synthesised. The mechanical characterisations showed a significant increase in compressive strength up to 1.4 MPa and doubled elastic modulus (240 kPa) by utilising only 0.6 wt% SNPs compared to the non-reinforced hydrogel. The optimum amounts of monomers and SNPs resulted in the compression of samples up to 85% strain without failure. Viscoelastic responses improved as the stress relaxation lessened to half in all nanocomposite hydrogels. Diffusion rate theory was applied, and the results showed to what extent elastic modulus results in an improvement in stress relaxation. The proposed hydrogel formulation exhibited the poroelastic relaxation occurred before viscoelastic relaxation at the time elapses under stress relaxation tests. SEM images showed uniform funnel-like porosity with 570 μm thick lubricious layer, which is an important feature to retain interstitial fluid. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was conducted to characterise the elemental composition within the polymeric macrostructure.

A Study on the Red Clay Binder Stabilized with a Polymer Aqueous Solution

In this study, the performance evaluation was performed by adding a polymer aqueous (PA) solution as a new additive of the red clay binder for use in the rammed-earth construction method. The evaluation items were compressive strength, water erosion, shrinkage, crystal structure, and microstructure. As a result of the experiment, the binder was improved by efficiently bonding the silica particles by the polymerized polymer. It was confirmed that adding a PA solution to red clay enhances the compressive strength, which is further improved when 5 wt% poly(Acrylic acid(AA)-co-Acrylamide(AM)) is added to the PA solution. Microstructural analysis indicated that the addition of a PA solution facilitates effective bonding of the silica particles of red clay to form hydrogen bonding with poly(AA-co-AM) and encourages aggregate formation. Therefore, the study confirmed that PA solution can be applied to satisfy the performance requirements of the rammed-earth construction by improving the durability and strength of the binder.
