Abstract
Objectives ABO, which is primarily recognized for determining blood types, shows variable expression patterns in different tissues and cancer types. This study investigated the relationship between gene expression and cancer, and assessed its potential impact on patient survival. Methods Utilizing the GEPIA database, we analyzed ABO expression in normal and tumor tissues across various cancer types using online in silico tools for comprehensive evaluation. Results The analysis revealed significant disparities in ABO expression among different tissue types. Notably, ovarian and thyroid tissues exhibited the highest expression of ABO, whereas the liver, thymus, and brain tissues showed relatively low expression. The expression patterns of ABO varied distinctly among cancer types, with ovarian and thyroid carcinomas demonstrating the most significant differences between tumor and normal tissues. Other cancers, including adrenocortical carcinoma, acute myeloid leukemia, and renal cell carcinoma, also exhibit notable variations in ABO expression. Low ABO expression was correlated with reduced survival rates in colorectal adenocarcinoma, stomach adenocarcinoma, and renal cancers, among others. Conclusions These findings suggest the potential role of ABO in tumor development, as well as cancer progression and prognosis, underscoring the value of ABO as a biomarker for various cancers. This warrants further research for understanding the functional roles of ABO and its therapeutic implications to develop targeted cancer therapies and diagnostic tools.

Abstract
Background Apelin is one of the endogenous peptides that play a key role in the homeostasis of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the correlation between apelin levels and epicardial fat thickness (EFT) in patients with stable angina and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Materials and Methods In a case-control study, 90 patients nominated for angiography were enrolled in the study and divided into three groups: healthy subjects without angiographic findings (Con), stable angina pectoris group (SAP), and acute AMI group. Data collected from all subjects included biochemical, echocardiographic, and angiographical parameters. The Gensini score analyzed the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Results A decrease in adjusted apelin levels was evident in the AMI and SAP groups compared with healthy individuals (for both P < 0.001), especially in the AMI group. In addition, a detectable negative association was identified between apelin and Gensini score (r = -0.288, P = 0.006), Ck-MB (r = -0.300, P = 0.004), EFT (r = -0.300, P = 0.004), and troponin-T (r = -0.288, P = 0.006). Conclusion Myocardial injury in patients with CAD appears to play a significant role in apelin concentration independent of the role of adipose tissue, which requires further studies.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) pose a serious threat to people's health, with extremely high global morbidity, mortality, and disability rates. This study aimed to review the literature that examined the relationship between blood groups and CVD. Many studies have reported that non-O blood groups are associated with an increased risk and severity of coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. Non-O blood groups increase the risk and severity of these conditions by increasing von Willebrand factor and plasma cholesterol levels and inducing endothelial dysfunction and inflammation. They have also been linked with increased coronary artery calcification, coronary lesion complexity, and poor collateral circulation. Blood groups also affect the prognosis of coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome and can alter the rate of complications and mortality. Several cardiovascular complications have been described for coronavirus disease 2019, and blood groups can influence their occurrence. No studies have found a significant relationship between the Lewis blood group and CVD. In conclusion, people with non-O blood groups should be vigilantly monitored for cardiovascular risk factors as prevention and proper treatment of these risk factors may mitigate their risk of CVD and adverse cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Background: The ABO blood group system has previously been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), where non-O blood group individuals have shown an increased risk. Studies assessing early atherosclerotic disease while also including RhD are few. We aimed to determine whether the ABO and RhD blood groups are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in a healthy population. Methods: We included 3532 participants from the VIPVIZA trial with available carotid ultrasonography results to assess subclinical disease. Information about blood groups was obtained from the SCANDAT-3 database, where 85% of VIPVIZA participants were registered. Results: RhD- individuals aged 40 years showed increased carotid intima-media thickness (B 1.09 CI 95% 1.03; 1.14) compared to RhD+ individuals. For ABO, there were no differences in ultrasonography results when assessing the whole study population. However, 60-year-old individuals with heredity for CVD and a non-O blood group had decreased odds for carotid plaques (OR 0.54 CI 95% 0.33; 0.88). Conclusions: RhD blood group is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in younger individuals, indicating a role as a mediator in the atherosclerotic process. In addition, a non-O blood group was associated with decreased subclinical atherosclerosis in individuals aged 60 and with heredity (corresponding to the group with the highest atherosclerotic burden).

Abstract
This study aimed to find an association between ABO blood groups with presence and severity of Coronary artery disease (CAD) among Indian population. 1500 patients undergoing elective coronary angiogram (CAG) at a tertiary care hospital in Karnataka were enrolled in the study. Baseline demographic data and the presence of cardiac comorbidities were documented. Data from baseline echocardiography and angiographic studies were compiled. The incidence of CAD was higher among patients with blood group A. Blood group A also showed a higher incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), left ventricular dysfunction, triple vessel disease, and severe CAD among the patients who underwent CAG.

Abstract
Although ABO blood groups have been associated with cardio-vascular disease, little is known about whether ABO blood groups contribute to the risk of the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in elderly individuals with hypertension. This study was aimed to explore this as-sociation. A total of 793 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 years out of 2095 patients who underwent primary coronary angiography were retrospectively included. They were divided into CAD and non-CAD groups. Demographic and clinical characteristics, ABO blood groups and other biochemical parameters were compared. Further evaluation was performed to determine the impact of ABO blood groups on CAD severity using the Gensini score and the number of significantly diseased vessels. A logistic regression model was constructed to identify the association of ABO blood groups with CAD. There was a substantial difference in the distribution of ABO blood groups in elderly and hypertensive adults with and without CAD (p=0.022). Hypertensive patients with CAD had a significantly lower proportion of the blood group B than those without CAD (p=0.008). Compared to those with non-Blood group B, hypertensive elderly with a blood group B tended to have significantly lower concentrations of TC, LDL -C and Apo B, and a lower number of significantly stenosed vessels. The blood group B was found to be an independent protective factor for CAD in elderly with hypertension. The blood group B is significantly associated with a decreased risk of CAD and is inversely correlated with the severity of coronary stenosis in the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract
Background Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a type of cardiac rupture, usually complicated by acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with a high mortality rate and often poor prognosis. The aim of our study was to investigate the factors influencing the long-term prognosis of patients with VSR from different aspects, comparing the evaluation performance of the Gensini score, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and European Heart Surgery Risk Assessment System II (EuroSCORE II) score systems. Methods This study retrospectively enrolled 188 patients with VSR between Dec 9, 2011 and Nov 21, 2021at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. All patients were followed up until Jan 27, 2022 for clinical data, angiographic characteristics, echocardiogram outcomes, intraoperative, postoperative characteristics and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) (30-day mortality, cardiac readmission). Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to explore the predictors of long-term mortality. Results The median age of 188 VSR patients was 66.2 ± 9.1 years and 97 (51.6%) were males, and there were 103 (54.8%) patients in the medication group, 34 (18.1%) patients in the percutaneous transcatheter closure (TCC) group, and 51 (27.1%) patients in the surgical repair group. The average follow-up time was 857.4 days. The long-term mortality of the medically managed group, the percutaneous TCC group, and the surgical repair group was 94.2, 32.4, and 35.3%, respectively. Whether combined with cardiogenic shock (OR 0.023, 95% CI 0.001-0.054, P = 0.019), NT-pro BNP level (OR 0.027, 95% CI 0.002-0.34, P = 0.005), EuroSCORE II (OR 0.530, 95% CI 0.305-0.918, P = 0.024) and therapy group (OR 3.518, 95% CI 1.079-11.463, P = 0.037) were independently associated with long-term mortality in patients with VSR, and this seems to be independent of the therapy group. The mortality rate of surgical repair after 2 weeks of VSR was much lower than within 2 weeks (P = 0.025). The cut-off point of EuroSCORE II was determined to be 14, and there were statistically significant differences between the EuroSCORE II < 14 group and EuroSCORE II≥14 group (HR = 0.2596, 95%CI: 0.1800-0.3744, Logrank P < 0.001). Conclusion Patients with AMI combined with VSR have a poor prognosis if not treated surgically, surgical repair after 2 weeks of VSR is a better time. In addition, EuroSCORE II can be used as a scoring system to assess the prognosis of patients with VSR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A recent study suggested that non-O blood groups had an increased risk for the presence of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). In this study, we investigated (i) an association between blood group and the presence of RVO and (ii) whether this association correlated to other RVO risk factors. METHODS We included 485 RVO patients and 295 control subjects who were recruited in this case-control study. We determined ABO genotypes rs8176719 as a marker for the O allele and rs8176746 for the B allele by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS We did not find an association between ABO blood group and the presence of RVO. In detail, the proportion of ABO blood groups was similar among RVO patients and control subjects (p = 0.527). In a logistic regression, non-O blood group was associated with 1.06-fold higher odds of being a RVO patient (95% CI: 0.78-1.45, p = 0.693), and this lack of association prevailed upon multivariable adjustment for age, gender, history of stroke and venous thromboembolism, and co-medication with lipid-lowering agents. DISCUSSION Although non-O blood groups are a known risk factor for thrombotic and cardiovascular disease, they do not seem to be a major risk factor for the development of RVO.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and negatively affecting the prognosis of patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a multipotent cytokine involved in various cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. In this prospective study, we investigate the value of MIF in the long-term prognosis of STEMI combined with MetS after emergency PCI. Circulating MIF levels were measured at admission, and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) were monitored during the follow-up period of 4.9 (3.9–5.8) years. MACCE occurred in 92 patients (22.9%), which was significantly higher in MetS (69/255, 27.1%) than in the non-MS subgroup (23/146, 15.8%, P < 0.05). Patients with MetS developed MACCE had the highest admission MIF level. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis using the cutoff value of admission MIF (143 ng/ml) showed that patients with a higher MIF level had a greater incidence of MACCE than those with lower MIF levels in both the MetS (P < 0.0001) and non-MetS groups (P = 0.016). After adjustment for clinical variables, the value of MIF ≥ 143 ng/ml still had the predictive power for the MetS group [HR 9.56, 95% CI (5.397–16.944),P < 0.001]; nevertheless, it was not the case in the non-MetS group. Our findings indicated that MetS is a critical risk factor for adverse clinical outcomes in patients with STEMI, and a high admission MIF level has predictive power for the long-term MACCE, which is superior in STEMI patients with MetS and better than other traditional predictors.

Abstract
Objective Our study aims to investigate the role of the ABO blood group in the development and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with dialysis. Methods A total of 408 ESRD patients with dialysis between January 2010 and December 2020 were enrolled including 204 patients diagnosed with CAD undergoing coronary angiography for the first time, and baseline characteristics as well as Gensini score (GS) were collected. Logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the relation of ABO blood types to the risk and severity of CAD, respectively. Results Blood group O frequency was significantly low in dialysis ESRD patients with CAD (25 vs. 38.24%) compared with the non-CAD patients and multivariable logistic regression showed blood group O was negatively associated with the risk of CAD [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.19–0.60, p < 0.001] as well as the GS tertiles (adjusted OR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.11–0.49, p < 0.001) compared with A blood group. Blood group A, B, and AB were positively associated with the high Gensini tertile compared with O blood group (adjusted OR = 4.26, 95% CI = 2.03–8.93, p < 0.001; adjusted OR = 2.39, 95% CI = 1.11–5.13, p < 0.05; adjusted OR = 4.33, 95% CI = 1.40–13.35, P < 0.05). Similarly, multivariable linear regression results revealed O blood type was negatively associated with the GS (β = −26.129, 95% CI = −40.094 to −12.164, p < 0.001). Conclusion This case-control study demonstrated that blood group O was a potential independent protective factor for the risk and severity of CAD in ESRD patients with dialysis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute coronary syndrome is a manifestation of coronary artery disease caused by decreased blood flow to the heart musculature resulting in ischaemia and infarction of the heart. The Lewis (Le) blood group system comprise mainly Lewis a & b antigens which are secreted in plasma and are expressed on red cells, platelets and endothelium. This study assesses the risk of multivessel disease in acute coronary patients with lewis negative (a- b-) phenotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 183 patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome and who underwent coronary angiography to detect stenosis of the coronary vessels. The severity of the disease was classified based upon the number of vessels stenosed and their blood sample was phenotyped for Lewis antigens. The patients' risk factors, GRACE score and management were included for the study and multivariate logistic regression was carried out for analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of Lewis (a- b-) was 27.4% and there was a significant association with multivessel disease (P<0.05). However, there was no association of lewis (a- b-) with any of the risk factors causing coronary disease. The adjusted odds ratio of triple vessel disease in lewis (a- b-) was 2.6, female gender was 0.6 and patients with diabetes mellitus was 3.1, respectively. The GRACE score showed a significant association with ABO blood group (P<0.05) but not with lewis (a- b-). DISCUSSION Lewis negative patients are more likely to develop triple vessel disease compared to other lewis blood groups. This warrants further studies to investigate the link between lewis system and atherothrombosis.

Abstract
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an essential mediator of atherosclerotic plaque progression and instability leading to intracoronary thrombosis, therefore contributing to coronary artery disease (CAD). In this study, we investigated the relationship between MIF gene polymorphism and CAD in Chinese Han population. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP, rs755622, rs1007888 and rs2096525) of MIF gene were genotyped by TaqMan genotyping assay in 1120 control participants and 1176 CAD patients. Coronary angiography was performed in all CAD patients and Gensini score was used to assess the severity of coronary artery lesions. The plasma levels of MIF and other inflammatory mediators were measured by ELISA. The CAD patients had a higher frequency of CC genotype and C allele of rs755622 compared with that in control subjects (CC genotype: 6.5% vs. 3.9%, P = 0.008, C allele: 24.0% vs. 20.6%, P = 0.005). The rs755622 CC genotype was associated with an increased risk of CAD (OR: 1.804, 95%CI: 1.221-2.664, P = 0.003). CAD patients with a variation of rs755622 CC genotype had significantly higher Gensini score compared with patients with GG or CG genotype (all P < 0.05). In addition, the circulating MIF level was highest in CAD patients carrying rs755622 CC genotype (40.7 ± 4.2 ng/mL) and then followed by GC (37.9 ± 3.4 ng/mL) or GG genotype (36.9 ± 3.7 ng/mL, all P < 0.01). Our study showed an essential relationship between the MIF gene rs755622 variation and CAD in Chinese Han population. Individuals who carrying MIF gene rs755622 CC genotype were more susceptible to CAD and had more severe coronary artery lesion. This variation also had a potential influence in circulating MIF levels.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI), the leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide, is a disease in which multiple environmental and genetic factors are involved. Recently, researches suggested that insertion/deletion (ins/del) variation of NFKB1 gene rs28362491 is a functional polymorphism. In the present study, we aimed to explore the relation between variation of NFKB1 gene rs28362491 and MI by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in 359 MI patients and 1085 control participants. Gensini score was used to evaluate the degree of coronary artery stenosis in MI patients. The plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, malonaldehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were randomly measured by ELISA both in MI patients and control participants. We found that the detected frequencies of D allele (41.2% vs. 36.4%, P = 0.021) and DD genotype (17.5% vs. 12.0%, P = 0.022) were significantly higher in MI patients than in control participants. Compared with II or ID genotype carriers, the Gensini score in MI patients with DD genotype was 32-43% higher (both P < 0.001). Moreover, DD genotype carries had more diseased coronary arteries (P = 0.001 vs. II or ID genotype). Of note, IL-6 levels in MI patients carrying DD genotype were significantly higher than that in control participants and other genotype carriers in MI patients (both P < 0.05). In conclusion, NFKB1 gene rs28362491 DD genotype was associated with a higher risk of MI and more severe coronary artery lesion, which also had a potential influence on the level of inflammatory cytokine IL-6.

Abstract
Introduction Studies have been performed to identify the association between ABO blood groups and coronary artery disease. However, data is scarce about the impact of ABO blood groups on heart rupture (HR) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Methods We conducted a retrospective case–control study that included 61 consecutive patients with HR after AMI during a period from 1 January 2012 to 1 December 2019. The controls included 600 patients who were selected randomly from 8143 AMI patients without HR in a ratio of 1:10. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify the association between ABO blood groups and HR. Results Patients with blood group A had a greater risk of HR after AMI than those with non-A blood groups (12.35% vs 7.42%, P < 0.001). After adjusting for age, gender, heart rate at admission, body mass index (BMI), and systolic blood pressure (SBP), blood group A was independently related to the increased risk of HR after AMI (OR = 2.781, 95% CI 1.174–7.198, P = 0.035), and remained as an independent risk factor of HR after AMI in different multivariate regression models. Conclusion Blood group A is significantly associated with increased HR risk after AMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The ABO blood group system is a genetic polymorphism which can affect the clearance of von Willebrand factor. We aimed to assess the levels of newer biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and anti-heat-shock protein27 (anti-Hsp27) antibody titers in subjects with various blood groups (A, B, AB and O) and with or without traditional CVD risk factors. METHODS The cross-sectional study comprised 6910 subjects. Antigen-antibody agglutination was evaluated by the slide test method for identification of ABO blood groups. RESULTS Among three markers, only Serum anti-Hsp27 titers significantly differed between the four blood groups and showed the highest and lowest values in AB and O blood groups (0.26 ± 0.22 and 0.23 ± 0.18 OD, respectively; P < 0.05). Serum anti-Hsp27 was higher in individuals with an AB blood group with metabolic syndrome (MetS), dyslipidemia, hypertension (HTN) and obesity and it was lower in subjects with O blood group; though, two other biomarkers, serum PAB and hs-CRP, were not significantly different between the ABO blood groups. However, they were not different among blood groups in participants with or without diabetes mellitus (DM) (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Individuals with an AB blood group and high levels of anti-Hsp27 antibody titers may be predisposed to CVDs that can be mediated through the traditional CVD risk factors among middle-aged subjects from northeastern Iran. The fact that differences in anti Hsp27 are only found in the subgroup with other risk factors suggest that the difference between ABO blood groups is a consequence rather than a cause.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a serious threat to human health. Research shows that ABO blood groups, especially non-O blood types, are closely related to the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This study aimed to determine the associations of blood types with non-culprit coronary plaque characteristics using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods A total of 257 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients (average age, 59.39±10.08 years, 80% male) who underwent OCT of 3 vessels were identified. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: the O blood group (71 patients with 121 plaques) and the non-O group (186 patients with 329 plaques). The non-culprit coronary plaque features of the two groups were compared using OCT. Results The non-type O group had larger lipid arcs, thinner fibrous caps, and a greater number of thin-cap fibro atheromas (TCFAs). The type A, B, and AB blood groups had larger lipid arcs than the type O blood group, as well as thinner fibrous caps and more TCFAs. The type A blood group had thinner fibrous caps and a greater number of TCFAs than the type B and AB blood groups. Conclusions ACS patients with type non-O blood had more non-culprit plaques. Patients with type A blood, in particular, had more vulnerable characteristics than those with type O blood.

Abstract
Introduction: There is paucity of data about the possible role of ABO antigen in response to pharmacologic reperfusion therapy in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and its relationship with ST segment recovery; thus, we aimed to evaluate the association of ABO antigen with ST-segment resolution in STEMI patients treated with thrombolysis.
Methods: This prospective and observational study was conducted between March 2016 and September 2017 on patients with first acute STEMI within the first 12 hours after onset of symptoms treated with thrombolysis. Myocardial reperfusion success was determined by single-lead ST-segment recovery in 12-lead ECG. Patients were considered as responders if ST-segment resolved ≥50% or were assigned as non-responders if ST-segment resolution was <50%. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to examine the contribution of "A" and "B" blood group antigens to ST-segment resolution and the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular event (MACCE). Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported for each variable.
Results: In this study 303 patients (187 males and 116 females) with a mean age of 56.6 ± 16.8 (ranging from 39 to 87 years) were enrolled. 184 patients (60.7%) were responders and 119 patients (39.2%) were non-responders. The presence of either A (4.5 folds increase) or B (5.4 folds increase) antigen was associated with a higher likelihood of a response to thrombolytic therapy, while had not effect on the occurrence of MACCE.
Conclusion: We conclude that the presence of A or B blood group antigens is associated with a better response to thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute STEMI. This finding may imply a higher likelihood for thrombotic occlusion of coronary arteries in patients who have either A or B antigen in their blood.

Abstract
Glycosylation is highly prevalent, and also one of the most complex and varied posttranslational modifications. This large glycan diversity results in a wide range of biological functions. Functional diversity includes protein degradation, protein clearance, cell trafficking, cell signaling, host-pathogen interactions, and immune defense, including both innate and acquired immunity. Glycan-based ABO(H) antigens are critical in providing compatible products in the setting of transfusion and organ transplantation. However, evidence also suggests that ABO expression may influence cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, and hemostasis disorders, including alterations in platelet function and von Willebrand factor blood levels. Glycans also regulate immune and hemostasis function beyond ABO(H) antigens. Mutations in glycogenes (PIGA, COSMC) lead to serious blood disorders, including Tn syndrome associated with hyperagglutination, hemolysis, and thrombocytopenia. Alterations in genes responsible for sialic acids (Sia) synthesis (GNE) and UDP-galactose (GALE) and lactosamine (LacNAc) (B4GALT1) profoundly affect circulating platelet counts. Desialylation (removal of Sia) is affected by human and pathogenic neuraminidases. This review addresses the role of glycans in transfusion medicine, hemostasis and thrombosis, and red blood cell and platelet survival.

Abstract
Background ABO blood groups have previously been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between ABO blood groups and CVD in individuals with type 1 diabetes according to diabetic nephropathy (DN) status. Methods Adults with type 1 diabetes (4531 individuals) from the FinnDiane Study were evaluated. DN was determined by two out of three measurements of urinary albumin excretion rate. Albuminuria was defined as an excretion rate above 20 µg/min. CVD events were identified by linking the data with the Finnish Care Register for Health Care and the Finnish Cause of Death Register. Follow-up ranged from the baseline visit until a CVD event, death or the end of 2017. The impact of ABO blood groups on CVD risk was estimated by multivariable Cox-regression analyses adjusted for traditional risk factors. Results At baseline, the median age was 38.5 (IQR 29.2–47.9) years, 47.5% were female and median duration of diabetes was 20.9 (11.4–30.7) years. There were 893 incident ischemic heart disease (IHD) events, 301 ischemic strokes (IS), and 415 peripheral artery disease (PAD) events during a median follow up of 16.5 (IQR 12.8–18.6) years. The A blood group showed the highest risk of IHD versus the O blood group, when microalbuminuria was present. Comparing the population with microalbuminuria with those with normoalbuminuria, only the A blood group elevated the risk of IHD. This increased risk was neither explained by the FUT2 secretor phenotype nor by the A-genotype distribution. The risk of IS or PAD was no different among the ABO blood groups regardless of diabetic nephropathy stage. Conclusion The A blood group is a risk factor for IHD in individuals with type 1 diabetes and microalbuminuria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The correlation between cardiovascular risk scoring systems and the severity of coronary artery diseases (CAD) is not clear. The present research aimed to evaluate the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) risk score and Framingham risk score (FRS), using the Gensini score (GS) system as reference, so as to determine which model is better for the prediction of CAD severity. METHODS This research was a single-center and cross-sectional observational study. In total, 1423 patients were included in our study. Three different groups were formed according to GS: 0 < GS ≤ 22 (low GS group, n = 484); 22 < GS ≤ 42 (intermediate GS group, n = 468); GS > 42 (high GS group, n = 471). Logistic and linear regression analyses were carried out to explore the relationship between the risk score models and the GS. The performance of the risk models was determined by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. RESULTS The MESA risk score and the FRS both had a statistically significant power for the prediction of CAD severity (MESA area under curve: 0.630; FRS area under curve: 0.613). Furthermore, the MESA had a better performance in predicting the severity (p < 0.05) of CAD compared with the FRS. In the subgroup analysis, the MESA showed a better performance in the male (p < 0.05), diabetes mellitus (p < 0.05), and smoking subgroups (p < 0.05) compared with the FRS. CONCLUSION The MESA and FRS predicted the severity of CAD in the Chinese population of this study. Moreover, the MESA had a better performance than the FRS model in predicting the severity of CAD in the overall population as well as in the male, smoking, diabetes, and non-diabetes subgroups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the study was to assess the value of admission macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) levels in predicting clinical outcomes in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. METHODS For this study we recruited 498 STEMI patients after they received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), 40 with stable angina pectoris and 137 healthy participants. Plasma MIF levels were measured at admission and after PCI. The primary end points were in-hospital mortality and major adverse cardio-and/or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) during hospitalization and 3.2-year follow-up period. RESULTS Admission MIF levels were elevated in 88.4% of STEMI patients over the upper reference limit of healthy controls and it was 3- to 7-fold higher than that in stable angina pectoris and control groups (122 ± 61 vs 39 ± 19 vs 17 ± 8 ng/mL; P < 0.001). Admission MIF levels were significantly higher in patients who died after myocardial infarction vs survivors. For predicting in-hospital mortality using the optimal cutoff value (127.8 ng/mL) of MIF, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for MIF was 0.820, similar area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values for predicting short-term outcomes were observed for high-sensitivity troponin T, CK-MB, N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide, and Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) score. Although peak high-sensitivity troponin T and N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide also predicted MACCE during the follow-up period, only higher admission MIF levels predicted in-hospital mortality and MACCE during the 3.2-year follow-up. Multivariate regression analysis showed the independent predictive value of a higher admission MIF level (≥ 127.8 ng/mL) on in-hospital mortality (odds ratio, 9.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.7-47.2) and 3.2-year MACCE (hazard ratio, 2.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.5-5.6). CONCLUSIONS A higher admission MIF level is an independent predictor for in-hospital mortality and long-term MACCE in STEMI patients who underwent PCI.

Abstract
The ABH and Lewis antigens were among the first of the human red blood cell polymorphisms to be identified and, in the case of the former, play a dominant role in transfusion and transplantation. But these two therapies are largely twentieth-century innovations, and the ABH and related carbohydrate antigens are not only expressed on a very wide range of human tissues, but were present in primates long before modern humans evolved. Although we have learned a great deal about the biochemistry and genetics of these structures, the biological roles that they play in human health and disease are incompletely understood. This review and its companion, which appeared in a previous issue of Vox Sanguinis, will focus on a few of the biologic and pathologic processes which appear to be affected by histo-blood group phenotype. The first of the two reviews explored the interactions of two bacteria with the ABH and Lewis glycoconjugates of their human host cells, and described the possible connections between the immune response of the human host to infection and the development of the AB-isoagglutinins. This second review will describe the relationship between ABO phenotype and thromboembolic disease, cardiovascular disease states, and general metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups have been suggested to have a high correlation with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It has also been postulated that platelet indices, including mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), are very important in the development and progression of CVDs. However, despite these common associations with CVDs, as far as we know, there are no studies investigating platelet indices in ABO blood groups. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether platelet indices are associated with ABO blood groups. METHODS The study included 301 healthy volunteers (99 women and 202 men; mean age: 32.59 ± 7.52 years) whose blood groups were determined by the gel column method using agglutination techniques. Platelet indices were studied by an automated blood counter. RESULTS No considerable differences in age, gender, or Rh factors were observed among ABO blood groups. MPV was detected to be considerably lower in O and A blood group subjects than in AB and B blood group subjects. Similarly, PDW was significantly lower in O and A blood group subjects than in B blood group subjects. Additionally, MPV in the O blood group subjects was significantly lower than in the non-O blood group subjects. CONCLUSIONS Because MPV and PDW are used as markers of CVDs, individuals with O and A blood groups in this study may be considered to have a lower risk of CVDs than AB and B blood group subjects. However, prospective cohort studies involving a greater number of volunteers are needed to elucidate these relationships.

Abstract
AIM The predictive value of big endothelin-1 (ET-1) for cardiovascular outcomes in myocardial infarction (MI) patients younger than 35 years old has not been characterized. METHODS A total of 565 consecutive MI patients younger than 35 years old were studied and followed up for 37.78 ± 24.9 months. RESULTS Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that big ET-1 was positively correlated with major adverse cardiovascular events [MACEs] (odds ratio: 3; 95% CI: 1.92-4.68; p < 0.001). The area under receiver operating characteristics curve showing the predictive value of big ET-1 on MACEs was 0.67. CONCLUSION The study first demonstrated that big ET-1 was an independent predictor for MACEs in MI patients younger than 35 years old.

Abstract
The ABO blood types related to morphological characteristics of atherosclerosis plaque are not clear. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between ABO blood groups and the coronary plaque characteristic. We retrospectively identified the target lesions in 392 acute coronary syndrome patients who underwent optical coherence tomography examination before stenting. Subjects were divided into different groups according to different blood types. The fibrous cap thickness was significantly thicker in O type compared with non-O type (0.075 ± 0.033 mm versus 0.061 ± 0.024, p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the incidence of thin-cap fibroatheroma was also significantly higher in O type compared with non-O type (51.0% versus 71.5%, p < 0.001). The O type showed a significantly larger minimum lumen area [1.26 (0.82, 2.13) versus 1.05 (0.67, 1.82), p = 0.020] and minimum lumen diameter [1.03 (0.74, 1.31) versus 0.95 (0.66, 1.25), p = 0.039] compared with non-O type. There were no differences found in incidence of lipid plaque, plaque rupture, and thrombus between different blood type groups even between O type and non-O type group (p > 0.05). The plaques of O type blood group were exhibited more stably compared with non-O type blood group. Moreover, the non-O type blood group have more serious coronary artery stenosis than O type blood group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have identified ABO blood groups as predictors of thromboembolic diseases. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), however, potential association between ABO blood groups and the risk of left atrial (LA) and/or left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombogenic milieu (TM) has not been established. METHODS This is a retrospective case-control study that included 125 consecutive patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) plus TM, as evidenced by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during a period from1 January 2010 to 31 December 2016. The controls were selected randomly from 1072 NVAF without TM at a 1:2 ratio. Potential association between ABO blood groups and TM was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The risk of TM was higher in patients with blood group A (33.6% vs. 20.2% in non-A blood groups, P=0.005). After adjusting for age, sex, oral anticoagulant use, AF type and duration, and relevant functional measures (e.g., NT-pro BNP level, left atrium diameter, and left ventricular ejection fraction), blood group A remained associated with an increased risk of TM (OR=2.99, 95% CI 1.4-6.388, P=0.005). CONCLUSION Blood group A is an independent risk factor for TM in NVAF patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies had examined the role of ABO blood groups on CAD in hypertensive patients with different blood pressure (BP) controls. METHODS A total of 2708 patients with primary hypertension (HTN) were consecutively enrolled and underwent coronary angiography (CAG) due to angina-like chest pain. The severity of coronary artery stenosis was assessed by Gensini score (GS). Patients were divided into two groups due to results of CAG: HTN with CAD (n = 2185) and HTN without CAD (n = 523). Poor BP control was defined as systolic BP (SBP) ≥ mean in the study. Multivariable regression analysis was used to determine the potential impact of ABO blood groups on risk of the presence and severity of CAD. RESULTS Compared to HTN without CAD group, the percentage of A blood group was statistically higher and O blood group was significantly lower in HTN with CAD group. Moreover, percentage of the angiography-proven CAD was higher in A blood group than that in non-A blood group (p < 0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, A blood group was independently associated with CAD (odds ratio (OR): 1.422; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.017-1.987; p = 0.039) and GS (β = 0.055, p = 0.046) in patients with poor BP control. CONCLUSIONS A blood group was an independent risk factor for the presence and severity of CAD in hypertensive patients with poor BP control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups have been confirmed to be associated with cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease. However, whether ABO blood group is correlated with coronary artery calcium (CAC) is still unknown. METHOD 301 patients with coronary artery calcium score (CACS) assessed by computed tomography were consecutively enrolled and divided into two groups: with calcium group (CACS>0, n=104) and without calcium group (CACS=0, n=197). Distribution of ABO blood groups was evaluated between the two groups. RESULTS The percentage of A blood type was significantly higher (p=0.008) and O blood type was significantly lower (p=0.037) in the calcium group. Univariate regression analysis showed that age, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, A blood type were positively correlated with CAC, and O blood type was inversely associated with CAC. Multivariate regression analysis showed that A blood type was independently associated with CAC (odds ratio: 2.217, 95% confidence interval: 1.260-3.900, p=0.006) even after further adjustment for variables that were clearly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Our data has suggested for the first time that A blood type was an independent risk marker for CAC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS ABO blood type is associated with cardiovascular disease, although the underlying mechanisms are presumed to be complex. While the relationship between non-O blood types and von Willebrand Factor (vWF) is well-established, associations with cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) across diverse populations are understudied. METHODS We genetically inferred ABO alleles for N = 6202 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. Linear regression was used to evaluate associations between major ABO allele dosages and log-transformed measurements of vWF (N = 924), soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin, N = 925), soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin, N = 2392), and soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1, N = 2236) by race/ethnicity. RESULTS For the selectins, the A1 allele was associated with significantly lower levels for all races/ethnicities, with each additional allele resulting in a 28-39% decrease in sE-selectin and 10-18% decrease in sP-selectin relative to Type O subjects. However, the A2 allele demonstrated effect heterogeneity across race/ethnicity for sE-selectin, with lower levels for non-Hispanic whites (p = 0.0011) but higher levels for Hispanics (p = 0.0021). We also identified elevated sP-selectin levels for B-allele carriers solely in Hispanic participants (p = 1.0E-04). ABO-by-race/ethnicity interactions were significant for both selectins (p < 0.0125). More modest associations were observed between A1 allele dosage and levels of sICAM-1, with ABO alleles explaining 0.8-1.1% of the total phenotypic variation within race/ethnicity. ABO associations with vWF activity were consistent across race/ethnicity, with B allele carriers corresponding to the highest vWF activity levels. CONCLUSIONS ABO blood type demonstrates complex associations with endothelial markers that are largely generalizable across diverse populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ABO blood group exerts a profound influence on hemostasis, and it has hence been associated with the development of thrombotic cardiovascular adverse events. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between the ABO blood group and the risk of cardiovascular disease assessed with the Cardiorisk score. METHODS All blood donors aged between 35 and 65 years were enrolled in the Cardiorisk program, which included the assessment of 8 variables (sex, age, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, plasma glucose, arterial blood pressure, anti-hypertensive therapy and smoking) which were used to generate a score. Individuals with a resulting score ≥20, considered at high cardiovascular risk, underwent additional instrumental tests (chest X-ray, stress electrocardiogram and Doppler ultrasound of supra-aortic trunks) and were closely clinically monitored. RESULTS Between January 2005 and December 2015, 289 blood donors with Cardiorisk ≥20 were identified, 249 of whom were included in the study with at least 2 years of follow-up. Among these, 36 (14.5%) had instrumental abnormality tests and developed adverse cardiovascular events (10 acute coronary syndrome, 2 cerebral ischemia, 3 cardiac arrhythmia, 8 stenosis of supra-aortic trunks or iliac arteries) during a median follow-up of 5.3 years. In this group of 249 high risk individuals, a statistically significant association (P=0.02) was found between the non-O blood type and the risk of developing subclinical or clinical cardiovascular events (odds ratio, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.1-10.1; P=0.033). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study underline the both key role of ABO blood group for the risk of developing arterial thrombotic events and the need for including such unmodifiable variable on the scores assessing the thrombotic risk.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Essentials von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) levels are modulated by age and ABO status. The effect of aging and ABO blood type on VWF and FVIII was assessed in 207 normal individuals. Aging and ABO blood type showed combined and bidirectional influences on VWF and FVIII levels. Aging and ABO blood type influence VWF levels through both secretion and clearance mechanisms. SUMMARY Background The effect of aging and ABO blood type on plasma levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) have been widely reported; however, a comprehensive analysis of their combined effect has not been performed and the mechanisms responsible for the age-related changes have not been determined. Objectives To assess the influence of aging and ABO blood type on VWF and FVIII levels, and to evaluate the contribution of VWF secretion and clearance to the age-related changes. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was performed in a cohort of 207 normal individuals, whose levels of VWF, FVIII, VWF propeptide (VWFpp), VWFpp/VWF:Ag ratio and blood type A antigen content on VWF (A-VWF) were quantified. Results Aging and ABO blood type exerted interrelated effects on VWF and FVIII plasma levels, because the age-related increase in both proteins was significantly higher in type non-O individuals (β = 0.011 vs. 0.005). This increase with age in non-O subjects drove the differences between blood types in VWF levels, as the mean difference increased from 0.13 U/mL in the young to 0.57 U/mL in the old. Moreover, A-VWF was associated with both VWF antigen (β = 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.09, 0.50) and VWF clearance (β = -0.15; 95% CI, -0.25, -0.06). We also documented an effect of ABO blood type on VWF secretion with aging, as old individuals with blood type non-O showed higher levels of VWFpp (mean difference 0.29 U/mL). Conclusions Aging and ABO blood type have an interrelated effect on VWF and FVIII levels, where the effect of one is significantly influenced by the presence of the other.

Abstract
The cellular adhesion pathway is critical in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, and genetic factors contributing to regulation of circulating levels of related proteins may be relevant to risk prediction of cardiovascular disease. In contrast to conducting separate genome-wide protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) mapping analyses of each individual protein, joint genetic association analyses of multiple quantitative traits can leverage cross-trait co-variation and identify simultaneous regulatory effects on protein levels across the pathway. We conducted a multi-pQTL (mpQTL) analysis of 15 proteins related to cellular adhesion assayed on 2313 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). We applied the MQFAM multivariate association analysis method in PLINK on normalized protein level residuals derived from univariate linear regression, adjusting for age, sex, and principal components of ancestry. Race/ethnicity-stratified analyses identified nine genome-wide significant (P < 5e-08) loci associated with co-variation of protein levels. Although the majority of these SNPs were in proximity to structural genes of the assayed proteins, we discovered multiple loci demonstrating co-association with the circulation of at least two proteins. Of these, two significant loci specific to non-Hispanic white participants, rs17074898 at ALOX5AP (P = 1.78E-08) and rs7521237 at KIAA1614 (P = 2.2E-08), would not have met statistical significance using univariate analyses. Moreover, common patterns of multi-protein associations were discovered at the ABO locus across race/ethnicity. These results indicate the biological relevance of blood group antigens on regulation of circulating cellular adhesion pathway proteins while also demonstrating race/ethnicity-specific co-regulatory effects.

Abstract
Inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Recent studies indicate that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a potent proinflammatory cytokine which mediates the inflammatory process during atherosclerosis. The polymorphism of MIF gene (rs755622 [-173G/C], rs1007888, and rs2096525) were genotyped by TaqMan single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping assay in 320 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 603 controls in a Chinese Kazakh population. Coronary angiography was performed on all CAD patients and Gensini score was used to assess the severity of coronary artery lesions. The frequency of the CC genotype and C allele of rs755622 were significantly higher in CAD patients than that in control subjects (8.4% vs. 5.1%, P < 0.001, 30.3% vs. 22.1%, P < 0.001, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that individuals with CC genotype or C allele had a higher risk for CAD (CC genotype vs. GG genotype, OR = 2.224, 95% CI, 1.239-3.992, P = 0.007, and C allele vs. G allele, OR = 1.473, 95% CI, 1.156-1.876, P = 0.002, respectively). Moreover, CAD patients with rs755622 C allele (CC + CG genotype) have higher levels of Gensini score when compared to C allele noncarriers (32.74 ± 26.66 vs. 21.44 ± 19.40, P < 0.001, adjusted). Our results suggested that the CC genotype and C allele of MIF rs755622 SNP may be a genetic marker for the risk of CAD and potentially predict the severity of CAD in Chinese Kazakh population.

Abstract
ABO blood type locus has been reported to have ethnic difference and to be a pivotal genetic determinant of cardiovascular risk, whereas few prospective data regarding the impact on cardiovascular outcomes are available in a large cohort of patients with angiography-proven coronary artery disease, especially from the Chinese population. The objective of this study was to assess the prognostic role of blood type in future cardiovascular events (CVEs) in Chinese Han patients undergoing coronary angiography.The population of this prospective cohort study consisted of 3823 eligible patients, and followed annually to capture all CVEs. Baseline characteristics and ABO blood type were obtained. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the risk of ABO blood type on CVEs.New CVEs occurred in 348 patients [263 (10.3%) non-O and 85 (7.8%) O] during a median period of 24.6 months follow-up. Significantly, non-O blood group was related to the presence and severity of coronary atherosclerosis and several risk factors including inflammatory markers. The log-rank test revealed that there was a significant difference between non-O and O blood groups in event-free survival analysis (P = 0.026). In particular, the Cox proportional hazards models revealed that non-O blood type was associated with increased CVEs risk [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.320 (1.033-1.685)], even after adjusting for potential confounders [adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) non-O: 1.289 (1.003-1.656); A: 1.083 (0.797-1.472); B: 1.481 (1.122-1.955); AB: 1.249 (0.852-1.831), respectively].Non-O blood type is associated with future CVEs in Chinese Han patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have suggested ABO blood type locus as an inherited predictor of thrombosis, cardiovascular risk factors, myocardial infarction. However, data is scarce about the impact of non-O blood groups on prognosis in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic importance of non-O blood groups in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) METHODS: 1835 consecutive patients who were admitted with acute STEMI between 2010 and 2015 were included and followed-up for a median of 35.6months. RESULTS The prevalence of hyperlipidemia, total cholesterol, LDL, peak CKMB and no-reflow as well as hospitalization duration were higher in patients with non-O blood groups. Gensini score did not differ between groups. During the in-hospital and long-term follow-up period, MACE, the prevalence of stent thrombosis, non-fatal MI, and mortality were higher in non-O blood groups. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, non-0 blood groups were demonstrated to be independent predictors of in-hospital (OR:2.085 %CI: 1.328-3.274 p=0.001) and long term MACE (OR:2.257 %CI: 1.325-3.759 p<0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis according to the long-term MACE free survival revealed a higher occurrence of MACE in non-O blood group compared with O blood group (p<0.001, Chi-square: 22.810). CONCLUSION Non-O blood groups were determined to be significant prognostic indicators of short- and long-term cardiovascular adverse events and mortality in patients with STEMI undergoing pPCI. In conjunction with other prognostic factors, evaluation of this parameter may improve the risk categorization and tailoring the individual therapy and follow-up in STEMI patient population.

Abstract
Background Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were associated with blood lipid levels in Caucasians. This study investigated whether these loci influenced lipid levels and whether they were associated with the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its angiographic severity in Chinese population. Methods Six SNPs were genotyped in 1100 CAD cases and 1069 controls using the high-resolution melting (HRM) method. Coronary atherosclerosis severity was assessed by the vessel scores and the Gensini scoring system. Results Among the 6 SNPs and the genetic risks scores (GRS), the minor alleles of HNF1A rs1169288 (odd ratio (OR) = 1.18, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.05–1.33, P = 0.006) and MADD-FOLH1 rs7395662 (OR = 1.20, 95 % CI 1.07–1.36, P = 0.002) as well as the GRS (P = 1.06 × 10-5) were significantly associated with increased risk of CAD after false discovery rate (FDR) correction. The vessel (P = 0.013) and Gensini scores (β = 0.113, P = 0.002) differed among CAD patients with different SNP rs1169288 C > T genotypes. The multiple linear regression analyses using an additive model revealed that the minor allele C of SNP rs1169288 (β = 0.060, P = 0.001) and the GRS (β = 0.033, P = 3.59 × 10-4) were significantly associated with increased total cholesterol (TC) levels, the minor allele A of SNP rs7395662 (β = -0.024, P = 0.007) and the GRS (β = -0.013, P = 0.004) were significantly associated with decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels. Conclusions The present study demonstrated that SNPs rs1169288, rs7395662 and the GRS were significantly associated with lipid levels and the risk of CAD in Chinese population. Furthermore, the allele C of SNP rs1169288 increased the odds of coronary atherosclerosis severity. Abstract
The antigens of the ABO blood group system (A, B and H determinants) are complex carbohydrate molecules expressed on red blood cells and on a variety of other cell lines and tissues. Growing evidence is accumulating that ABO antigens, beyond their key role in transfusion medicine, may interplay with the pathogenesis of many human disorders, including infectious, cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases. In this narrative review, after succinct description of the current knowledge on the association between ABO blood groups and the most severe diseases, we aim to elucidate the particularly intriguing issue of the possible role of ABO system in successful aging. In particular, focus will be placed on studies evaluating the ABO phenotype in centenarians, the best human model of longevity.
