The importance of glucocorticoid receptors in systemic lupus erythaematosus. A systematic review

Coptisine, the Characteristic Constituent from Coptis chinensis, Exhibits Significant Therapeutic Potential in Treating Cancers, Metabolic and Inflammatory Diseases

Naturally derived alkaloids belong to a class of quite significant organic compounds. Coptisine, a benzyl tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid, is one of the major bioactive constituents in Coptis chinensis Franch., which is a famous traditional Chinese medicine. C. chinensis possesses many kinds of functions, including the ability to eliminate heat, expel dampness, purge fire, and remove noxious substances. In Asian countries, C. chinensis is traditionally employed to treat carbuncle and furuncle, diabetes, jaundice, stomach and intestinal disorders, red eyes, toothache, and skin disorders. Up to now, there has been plenty of research of coptisine with respect to its pharmacology. Nevertheless, a comprehensive review of coptisine-associated research is urgently needed. This paper was designed to summarize in detail the progress in the research of the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, safety, and formulation of coptisine. The related studies included in this paper were retrieved from the following academic databases: The Web of Science, PubMed, Google scholar, Elsevier, and CNKI. The cutoff date was January 2023. Coptisine manifests various pharmacological actions, including anticancer, antimetabolic disease, anti-inflammatory disease, and antigastrointestinal disease effects, among others. Based on its pharmacokinetics, the primary metabolic site of coptisine is the liver. Coptisine is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal system, and most of it is expelled in the form of its prototype through feces. Regarding safety, coptisine displayed potential hepatotoxicity. Some novel formulations, including the [Formula: see text]-cyclodextrin-based inclusion complex and nanocarriers, could effectively enhance the bioavailability of coptisine. The traditional use of C. chinensis is closely connected with the pharmacological actions of coptisine. Although there are some disadvantages, including poor solubility, low bioavailability, and possible hepatotoxicity, coptisine is still a prospective naturally derived drug candidate, especially in the treatment of tumors as well as metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Further investigation of coptisine is necessary to facilitate the application of coptisine-based drugs in clinical practice.

Allolobophora caliginosa coelomic fluid and extract alleviate glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in mice by suppressing oxidative stress and regulating osteoblastic/osteoclastic-related markers

Allolobophora calignosa (Ac) is a folk medicine for millennia, as it possesses many biological activities. This study aimed to investigate the chemo-preventive activity of A.calignosa coelomic fluid (AcCF) and A.calignosa extract (AcE) on glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) in mice. Characterization and in vitro biological activity of AcE and AcCF has been assessed. Male CD-1 mice were subcutaneously received dexamethasone (DEX) (1 mg/kg, 5 times/week) and concurrently intraperitoneally treated with either AcCF (20 mg/kg) or AcE (45 mg/kg) every other day for 28 days. Serum and bone homogenates were subjected for qPCR and biochemical analysis. AcE and AcCF treatment significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and calcitonin levels, whereas activity of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), serum acidic phosphatase (ACP), bone acidic phosphatase (BACP) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were significantly reduced compare with untreated GIOP mice. Treatment with AcE and AcCF modulates oxidative stress and downregulated Rank and Mmp9 expression, as well as increased glycosaminoglycan content in the organic bone matrix, resulting in osteoclastogenesis inhibition. Overall, AcCF and AcE show a chemo-preventive activity against GIOP by inhibiting oxidative stress and regulating expression and/or activity of osteoblast/osteoclast-related markers.

Jieduquyuziyin Prescription alleviates hepatic gluconeogenesis via PI3K/Akt/PGC-1α pathway in glucocorticoid-induced MRL/lpr mice

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Jieduquyuziyin prescription (JP) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula. According to both TCM theory and more than a decade of clinical practice, JP has been testified to be effective for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) treatment as an approved hospital prescription in China.

AIM OF THE STUDY

To determine the effect of JP on the treatment of SLE by glucocorticoid (GC) and to further examine the molecular mechanisms.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We conducted in vivo experiments to estimate the effect of JP on hepatic gluconeogenesis in MRL/lpr mice treated with GC. Additionally, isoproterenol (ISO) induced hepatic gluconeogenesis model and GC-treated MRL/lpr mouse hepatocytes were carried out in vitro experiments to verify the effect of JP on gluconeogenesis.

RESULTS

The results showed that JP combined with GC could effectively alleviate the lupus symptoms in MRL/lpr mice and improve the pathological changes of the kidney and liver. And the combination of JP reduced the side effects caused by GC, which was related to the inhibition of GC-induced hepatic gluconeogenesis in MRL/lpr mice. Specifically, JP up-regulated the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) α, phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and Akt restrained by GC to reduce the production of forkhead box O1 (FoxO1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), and the gluconeogenic genes phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase). In vivo, the use of JP either alone or with GC could reduce spleen enlargement, high levels of serum antibodies, aggravated urine protein and renal pathological damage in MRL/lpr mice. Furthermore, the glucose content was reduced in the liver of MRL/lpr mice treated with JP, and the liver damage and steatosis were also alleviated. In vitro, the expressions of PI3K and Akt increased and the expressions of FoxO1, PGC-1α, PEPCK and G6Pase decreased after JP treatment in ISO-treated hepatocytes. Compared with MRL/MP mice, we found that JP could significantly inhibit the expression of gluconeogenesis in the hepatocytes of MRL/lpr mice induced by GC to a greater extent.

CONCLUSIONS

The therapeutic effect of JP on GC-induced is likely related to hepatic gluconeogenesis, which provides a new perspective to reveal the positive role of JP in SLE.

Tanshinone I Mitigates Steroid-Induced Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head and Activates the Nrf2 Signaling Pathway in Rats

Steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SIONFH) is a frequent orthopedic disease caused by long-term or high-dose administration of corticosteroids. Tanshinone I (TsI), a flavonoid compound isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, has been reported to inhibit osteoclastic differentiation in vitro. This study aimed to investigate whether TsI can ameliorate SIONFH. Herein, SIONFH was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 20 μg/kg lipopolysaccharide every 24 h for 2 days, followed by an intramuscular injection of 40 mg/kg methylprednisolone every 24 h for 3 days. Four weeks after the final injection of methylprednisolone, the rats were intraperitoneally administrated with low-dose (5 mg/kg) and high-dose (10 mg/kg) TsI once daily for 4 weeks. Results showed that TsI significantly alleviated osteonecrotic lesions of the femoral heads as determined by micro-CT analysis. Furthermore, TsI increased alkaline phosphatase activity and expressions of osteoblastic markers including osteocalcin, type I collagen, osteopontin, and Runt-related transcription factor 2 and decreased tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity and expressions of osteoclastic markers including cathepsin K and acid phosphatase 5. TsI also reduced inflammatory response and oxidative stress and activated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway in the femoral heads. Taken together, our findings show that TsI can relieve SIONFH, indicating that it may be a candidate for preventing SIONFH.

Association of DYNC1H1 gene SNP/CNV with disease susceptibility, GCs efficacy, HRQOL, anxiety, and depression in Chinese SLE patients

Background

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by multi‐system injuries and overproduction of autoantibodies. There are many genetic studies on SLE, but no report has considered the relationship between cytoplasmic dynein and SLE susceptibility.

Objectives

Our study intends to investigate whether DYNC1H1 gene SNP/CNV is related to SLE susceptibility, GCs efficacy, HRQOL, anxiety, and depression in Chinese SLE patients.

Methods

A total of 502 cases and 544 healthy controls were recruited into the case‐control study, and 472 subjects from the case group were followed up for 12 weeks to evaluate GCs efficacy, HRQOL, anxiety, and depression. Multiplex SNaPshot technique was applied to genotype the seven SNPs of DYNC1H1, and AccuCopy^TM method was conducted to quantify the copy number of DYNC1H1. Anxiety and depression were evaluated using HAMA and HAMD‐24 scales, respectively. The SF‐36 scale was used to assess HRQOL.

Results

The significant association between SNP rs1190606 and SLE susceptibility was displayed in the dominant model (P_BH = 0.004) as well as its allele model (P_BH = 0.004). We also found that SNP rs2273440 was related to photosensitization symptom in SLE patients (P_BH = 0.032). In the follow‐up study, SNP rs11160668 was connected with the improvement of BP in male patients (P_BH = 0.011). However, no association of DYNC1H1 gene with GCs efficacy, anxiety, and depression was found. No CNV in DYNC1H1 was detected.

Conclusions

The study suggests that DYNC1H1 gene polymorphisms may have an effect on SLE susceptibility and BP improvement of HRQOL in Chinese SLE patients.

Copy number variations and polymorphisms in HSP90AB1 and risk of systemic lupus erythematosus and efficacy of glucocorticoids

The aim of our study was to assess the associations of HSP90AB1 copy number variations (CNVs) with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk and glucocorticoids (GCs) efficacy, as well as the relationship between HSP90AB1 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and GCs efficacy. HSP90AB1 CNVs and SLE risk were analysed in 519 patients and 538 controls. Patients treated with GCs were followed up for 12 weeks and were divided into sensitive and insensitive groups to investigate the effects of CNVs (419 patients) and SNPs (457 patients) on the efficacy of GCs. Health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) was also measured by SF‐36 at baseline and week 12 to explore the relationship between CNVs/SNPs and HRQoL improvements in Chinese SLE patients. Our results indicated a statistically significant association between HSP90AB1 CNVs and SLE (P_BH = 0.039), and this association was more pronounced in the female subgroup (P_BH = 0.039). However, we did not detect association of HSP90AB1 CNVs/SNPs with efficacy of GCs. But we found a marginal association between SNP rs13296 and improvement in Role‐emotional, while this association was not strong enough to survive in the multiple testing corrections. Collectively, our findings suggest that the copy number of HSP90AB1 is associated with SLE susceptibility. But copy number and polymorphisms of HSP90AB1 may not be associated with efficacy of GCs.

Polymorphisms of human glucocorticoid receptor gene in systemic lupus erythematosus: a single-centre result

BACKGROUND

SLE is a systemic autoimmune disorder with multiple organ manifestations. Despite of the innovations glucocorticoids (GC) have still remained the first-line therapy in SLE. Besides HSD11B enzymes, intracellular glucocorticoid receptors (GR) affect tissue-specific cortisol effect and the consequent signalisation pathway. SNPs of the glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) modulate individual sensitivity to glucocorticoids. Our aim was to determine the allele frequency of the three, clinically most important SNPs in a SLE patient population in comparison to healthy volunteers and to find association with particular manifestations of SLE.

METHODS

We analysed results of 104 SLE patients compared to 160 healthy subjects. All patients were genotyped for the functional GR polymorphisms BclI, N363S, and A3669G. The GR gene polymorphisms were determined using allele-specific PCR and Taqman allelic discrimination assays.

RESULTS

The BclI allele frequency was lower in the SLE group compared to the healthy control group. The central nervous system and especially psychiatric symptoms developed more frequently in the BclI carriers compared to none carriers. The prevalence of theA3669G polymorphism was the same in both groups, but showed a negative association with the psychiatric symptoms.

CONCLUSION

The increased and decreased sensitivity associated with GR BclI and A3669G polymorphisms could have a pathogenic significance in SLE especial with the central nervous system and psychiatric symptoms. Improving our knowledge on the importance of GR polymorphisms may reveal their pathophysiologic and therapeutic consequences.

Helminth-Based Product and the Microbiome of Mice with Lupus

Recently, several papers referred to the association of different bacteria with lupus in mice and humans. This is the first report to demonstrate the effect of a compound derived from helminths on the induction of remission in mice with lupus and its association with a bacterial change. We show that several genera, including Akkermansia, are associated with clinical and serological parameters of lupus, while other genera, including butyrate-producing bacteria, are associated with amelioration of disease following tuftsin and phosphorylcholine treatment.

The hygiene hypothesis claims that the lack of exposure to microorganisms in developed countries correlates with a rise in the incidence of autoimmune diseases. It was also found that helminths are able to modulate the immune response in hosts in order to survive. Consequently, several successful trials using helminths as a treatment for autoimmune patients have been reported. The helminth derivative, phosphorylcholine (PC), was discovered as an immunomodulatory molecule. We have recently shown in a murine model that when a conjugate of tuftsin and PC, termed TPC, is prophylactically administered before the onset of glomerulonephritis, it attenuates the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The current study aimed to examine the TPC effect on the gut microbiome in a mouse model of lupus. TPC treatment altered the gut composition in the mice with active lupus, in correlation with a significant decrease in glomerulonephritis, followed by an increased level of anti-inflammatory interleukin 10 (IL-10), decreased levels of proinflammatory mediators, and expansion of the T regulatory cell population. Importantly, we found that TPC treatment altered the mouse gut microbiome composition, in correlation with a significant decrease in protein secretion and improved disease parameters. The major effects of TPC treatment on the gut microbiome included decreased abundances of Akkermansia and increased abundance of several genera, including Turicibacter, Bifidobacterium, unclassified Mogibacteriaceae, unclassified Clostridiaceae, Adlercreutzia, Allobaculum, and Anaeroplasma. Overall, our results associate microbial changes with the immunomodulation of glomerulonephritis in mice with lupus.

Molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid resistance in systemic lupus erythematosus: A review

The treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with glucocorticoids (GCs) is quite effective; however, GC resistance or insensitivity is a major barrier to the treatment of SLE. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the underlying mechanisms that lead to GC resistance. Much evidence shows that the mechanism of GC resistance is very complicated. GC receptor is involved in the main mechanism of GC resistance and was illustrated by a lot of literature. Therefore, this paper focuses on the GC resistance mechanisms of non-glucocorticoids receptor, including P-gp, MIF, TLR9, and Th17 cells. These molecular mechanisms may help diagnose GC resistance and provide an alternative treatment strategy to reverse GC resistance by blocking the underlying mechanisms.

Associations of HSP90AA2 gene polymorphisms with disease susceptibility, glucocorticoids efficacy and health-related quality of life in Chinese systemic lupus erythematosus patients

Although the current glucocorticoids (GCs) treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is effective to a certain extent, the difference in therapeutic effect between patients is still a widespread problem. Some patients can have repeated attacks that greatly diminish their quality of life. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between HSP90AA2 polymorphisms and disease susceptibility, GCs efficacy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese SLE patients. A case-control study was performed in 470 SLE patients and 470 normal controls. Then, 444 patients in the case group were followed up for 12 weeks to observe efficacy of GCs and improvement of HRQoL. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of HSP90AA2 were selected for genotyping: rs1826330 and rs6484340. HRQoL was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. The minor T allele of rs1826330 and the TT haplotype formed by rs1826330 and rs6484340 showed associations with decreased SLE risk (T allele: P_BH = 0.022; TT haplotype: P_BH = 0.033). A significant association between rs6484340 and improvement of HRQoL was revealed in the follow-up study. Five subscales of SF-36 were appeared to be influenced by rs6484340: total score of SF-36 (additive model: P_BH = 0.026), physical function (additive model: P_BH = 0.026), role-physical (recessive model: P_BH = 0.041), mental health (dominant model: P_BH = 0.047), and physical component summary (additive model: P_BH = 0.026). No statistical significance was found between HSP90AA2 gene polymorphisms and GCs efficacy. These results revealed a genetic association between HSP90AA2 and SLE. Remarkably, HSP90AA2 has an impact on the improvement of HRQoL in Chinese population with SLE.

Glucocorticoid receptor expression in resident and hematopoietic cells in IgG4-related disease

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease is a rare immune-mediated disease characterized by the infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells and unique storiform fibrosis of multiple organs. The majority of IgG4-related disease patients respond to glucocorticoids, yet the precise mechanism of their action remains unclear. Pathological sections of the submaxillary gland, kidney, and retroperitoneum from 20 patients in total diagnosed with IgG4-related disease were analyzed for glucocorticoid receptor expression and the cell types expressing glucocorticoid receptor. Strong and abundant expression of glucocorticoid receptor was observed in the submaxillary gland, kidney, and retroperitoneum of IgG4-related disease patients, while glucocorticoid receptor was rarely or only faintly observed in the submaxillary gland of patients with Sjögren's syndrome, radicular cysts and sialolithiasis or in the healthy kidney. Glucocorticoid receptor was mainly expressed in fibro/myofibroblasts, CD4-positive T cells and IgG4-positive plasma cells in the submandibular glands and kidneys of IgG4-related disease patients. The abundant expression of glucocorticoid receptor in various types of cells, including resident fibro/myofibroblasts in IgG4-related disease patients might provide clues to the mechanism of steroid responsiveness in IgG4-related disease patients.

Treatment with Synthetic Glucocorticoids and the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis

Chronic glucocorticoid (GC) treatment represents a widely-prescribed therapy for several diseases in consideration of both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity but, if used at high doses for prolonged periods, it can determine the systemic effects characteristic of Cushing's syndrome. In addition to signs and symptoms of hypercortisolism, patients on chronic GC therapy are at risk to develop tertiary adrenal insufficiency after the reduction or the withdrawal of corticosteroids or during acute stress. This effect is mediated by the negative feedback loop on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which mainly involves corticotropin-release hormone (CRH), which represents the most important driver of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) release. In fact, after withdrawal of chronic GC treatment, reactivation of CRH secretion is a necessary prerequisite for the recovery of the HPA axis. In addition to the well-known factors which regulate the degree of inhibition of the HPA during synthetic GC therapy (type of compound, method of administration, cumulative dose, duration of the treatment, concomitant drugs which can increase the bioavailability of GCs), there is a considerable variation in individual physiology, probably related to different genetic profiles which regulate GC receptor activity. This may represent an interesting basis for possible future research fields.

Intravenous immunoglobulin: a biological corticosteroid-sparing agent in some autoimmune conditions

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is increasingly used for the treatment of autoimmune and systemic inflammatory diseases. This compound is effective in a wide range of clinical conditions other than primary immunodeficiency, including autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, infections, organ transplantation, and possibly supportive therapy for cancer. Systemic corticosteroids remain the gold standard treatment for many autoimmune diseases, but their long-term use is associated with complications in diverse organs and systems. Osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, cardiovascular disease, infections, and cancer have been associated with this treatment. Therefore, physicians are occasionally forced to withdraw the treatment with steroids. Biological agents may represent a good alternative, but in addition to being very expensive, these agents may have serious side effects. This review aimed to cover the major advances in the use of IVIg as a steroid-sparing agent in some relevant autoimmune diseases.

Post-steroid neuropsychiatric manifestations are significantly more frequent in SLE compared with other systemic autoimmune diseases and predict better prognosis compared with de novo neuropsychiatric SLE

In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), neuropsychiatric (NP) symptoms sometimes occur after administration of corticosteroids, making differential diagnosis between NPSLE and steroid-induced psychosis challenging for clinicians. The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of post-steroid NP disease (PSNP) in patients with SLE. Clinical courses of 146 patients with SLE and 162 with other systemic autoimmune diseases, all in the absence of NP manifestations on admission, were retrospectively analyzed. Forty-three NPSLE patients on admission (de novo NPSLE) were also investigated. All patients were consecutively recruited and treated with 40mg/day or more of prednisolone in Hokkaido University Hospital between April 2002 and March 2015. The prevalence of PSNP was strikingly higher in SLE patients than other systemic autoimmune diseases (24.7% vs. 7.4%, OR 4.09, 95% CI 2.04-8.22). As independent risk factors to develop PSNP in SLE patients, past history of mental disorder and the presence of antiphospholipid syndrome were identified using multiple logistic regression analysis. In patients with PSNP-SLE, mood disorder was significantly more frequent than in de novo NPSLE (47.2% vs. 20.9%, OR 3.38, 95% CI 1.26-9.04). Of PSNP-SLE patients, two-thirds were with one or more abnormal findings in cerebrospinal fluid, electroencephalogram, MRI or SPECT. Majority of our PSNP-SLE patients received intensified immunosuppressive treatments and experienced improvement in most cases. PSNP-SLE had better relapse-free survival than de novo NPSLE (p<0.05, log rank test). In conclusion, PSNP frequently occurred in patients with SLE and treated successfully with immunosuppressive therapy, indicating that NPSLE is likely to harbor patients with PSNP-SLE.

Defining conditions where long-term glucocorticoid treatment has an acceptably low level of harm to facilitate implementation of existing recommendations: viewpoints from an EULAR task force

There is convincing evidence for the known and unambiguously accepted beneficial effects of glucocorticoids at low dosages. However, the implementation of existing recommendations and guidelines on the management of glucocorticoid therapy in rheumatic diseases is lagging behind. As a first step to improve implementation, we aimed at defining conditions under which long-term glucocorticoid therapy may have an acceptably low level of harm. A multidisciplinary European League Against Rheumatism task force group of experts including patients with rheumatic diseases was assembled. After a systematic literature search, breakout groups critically reviewed the evidence on the four most worrisome adverse effects of glucocorticoid therapy (osteoporosis, hyperglycaemia/diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and infections) and presented their results to the other group members following a structured questionnaire for final discussion and consensus finding. Robust evidence on the risk of harm of long-term glucocorticoid therapy was often lacking since relevant study results were often either missing, contradictory or carried a high risk of bias. The group agreed that the risk of harm is low for the majority of patients at long-term dosages of ≤5 mg prednisone equivalent per day, whereas at dosages of >10 mg/day the risk of harm is elevated. At dosages between >5 and ≤10 mg/day, patient-specific characteristics (protective and risk factors) determine the risk of harm. The level of harm of glucocorticoids depends on both dose and patient-specific parameters. General and glucocorticoid-associated risk factors and protective factors such as a healthy lifestyle should be taken into account when evaluating the actual and future risk.

Multi-antibody composition in lupus nephritis: isotype and antigen specificity make the difference

Research on autoimmune processes involved in glomerulonephritis has been for years based on experimental models. Recent progress in proteomics has radically modified perspectives: laser microdissection and proteomics were crucial for an in vivo analysis of autoantibodies eluted from human biopsies. Lupus nephritis has been the subject of recent independent researches. Main topics have been the definition of renal autoimmune components in human lupus biopsies; methods were laser capture of glomeruli and/or of single cells (CD38+ or Ki-67+) from tubulointerstitial areas as starting step followed by elution and characterization of renal antibodies by proteomics. The innovative approach highlighted different panels of autoantibodies deposited in glomeruli and in tubulo-interstitial areas that actually represented the unique autoimmune components in these patients. IgG2 was the major isotype; new podocyte proteins (αenolase, annexin AI) and already known implanted molecules (DNA, histone 3, C1q) were their target antigens in glomeruli. Vimentin was the antigen in tubulo-interstitial areas. Matching renal autoantibodies with serum allowed the definition of a typical autoantibody serum map that included the same anti-αenolase, anti-annexin AI, anti-DNA, and anti-histone 3 IgG2 already detected in renal tissue. Serum levels of specific autoantibodies were tenfold increased in patients with lupus nephritis allowing a clear differentiation from both rheumatoid arthritis and other glomerulonephritis. In all cases, targeted antigens were characterized as components of lupus NETosis. Matching renal/serum autoantibody composition in vivo furnishes new insights on human lupus nephritis and allows to refine composition of circulating antibodies in patients with lupus. A thoughtful passage from bench to bedside of new knowledge would expand our clinical and therapeutic opportunities.
