Abstract
BACKGROUND Mother-to-infant bonding (MIB) is foundational for nurturing behaviors and an infant's development. Identifying risk factors for difficulties or problems in MIB is vital. However, traditional research often dichotomizes MIB using cutoff thresholds, overlooking its underlying complexities. This research utilizes latent profile analysis (LPA) to discern MIB subtypes in a nationwide Japanese dataset. METHODS We conducted LPA on data from the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS), collected from 3,877 postpartum women within one year of childbirth. To empirically validate the derived profiles, we examined their associated risk factors, focusing on sociodemographic, health, and perinatal variables. RESULTS Four distinct MIB profiles emerged. Profile 1 indicated minimal difficulties, while Profile 4 exhibited severe multifaceted difficulties. Profiles 2 and 3 showed moderate difficulties distinguished by lack of positive affection and presence of negative affection (especially indifference), respectively. Compared to Profile 1, women in Profiles 2-4 had a higher likelihood of postpartum depression and low family support. Each profile also presented unique risk factors: medium family support in Profile 2, maternal working status in Profile 3, and pre-pregnancy underweight status in Profile 4. Notably, both Profiles 3 and 4 were also linked to increased feelings of loneliness since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION This study represents the first application of LPA to MIB, revealing distinct subtypes and their respective risk profiles. These insights promise to enhance and personalize early interventions for difficulties in MIB, affirming the necessity of acknowledging MIB's heterogeneity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nature therapies are gaining attention as non-pharmacological treatments for depressive and anxiety disorders, but research on their effectiveness in patients is limited. This study investigates the mood-improving effects of visual stimulation with natural environmental images in patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. METHODS We conducted a randomized crossover comparison trial involving 60 right-handed adult participants with depressive or anxiety disorders and receiving outpatient treatment. Visual stimuli of natural environments consisted of green-themed nature images, while the control stimuli featured urban scenes dominated by buildings. The stimulation lasted for 3 min, during which orbital prefrontal brain activity was measured using a 2-channel Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) system, and heart rate variability was assessed using fingertip accelerated plethysmography. RESULTS Mood enhancement effects were observed in both the depressive and anxiety disorder groups following visual stimulation with nature images. In the depression group, orbital prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin concentration significantly increased after visual stimulation with nature images, while there were no significant changes in the anxiety group. However, in the anxiety group, a correlation was found between reduced orbital prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin in response to nature images and increased mood-enhancement. Furthermore, the severity of depressive symptoms did not significantly affect the intervention effects, whereas heightened anxiety symptoms was associated with a smaller mood enhancement effect. DISCUSSION Our study demonstrates the benefits of nature image stimulation for patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. Differential orbital prefrontal brain activity impacts notwithstanding, both conditions exhibited mood enhancement, affirming the value of nature image stimulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mother-to-infant bonding difficulties (MIBD) are considered risk factors for postpartum depression and child-maltreatment behaviors. However, few longitudinal studies have examined this hypothesis. This study aims to explore the relationship between MIBD and subsequent maternal depression and child-maltreatment behaviors using longitudinal data from a 2021 Japanese nationwide survey. METHODS We studied 658 first-time mothers who had given birth within the past year and had not reported postpartum depression or child-maltreatment behaviors at baseline. The Japanese version of Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) was used to measure MIBD. Subjects were monitored for six months and subsequently completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and responded to inquiries about child-maltreatment behaviors. RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, MIBD was associated with higher odds of maternal depression (OR=1.737, 95 % CI [1.078, 2.797]) and child-maltreatment behaviors (OR=2.040, 95 % CI [1.401, 2.970]) six months later. Further analysis indicated that MIBD was particularly associated with a heightened risk of emotional abuse (OR=2.172, 95 % CI [1.486, 3.176]). Sensitivity analysis confirmed these findings through multiple approaches, such as applying inverse probability weighting to mitigate selection bias, using an alternative MIBS cutoff score of 5, and adopting a time-varying model to account for the dynamic nature of depressive symptoms and child-maltreatment behaviors. CONCLUSION Proactive screening for MIBD could serve as a valuable tool in the early detection of maternal depression and potential child-maltreatment behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The quality of mother-to-infant bonding (MIB) is a crucial determinant of nurturing behaviors and infant development, with bonding difficulties (MIBD) posing a substantial threat. While it is essential to identify MIBD risk factors, previous studies have generally examined MIBD at one time point, leaving the contributors to persistent MIBD uncertain. This study aims to discern longitudinal risk factors for persistent versus episodic MIBD. METHODS We evaluated 1833 postpartum Japanese women who delivered in the past twelve months, utilizing the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) and other sociodemographic, health, pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing related data (T1). Follow-up data were obtained six months later (T2). MIBD was defined as a MIBS score of five or more, with "persistent" and "episodic" MIBD classified based on its occurrence at both or either one of the time points, respectively. Logistic generalized estimating equations and inverse probability weighting were used to identify risk factors and address selective attribution bias. RESULTS Of the subjects, 15.8 % reported episodic and 11.3 % reported persistent MIBD. Shared risk factors for both conditions included postpartum depression and low levels of family support (OR = 1.501-6.343). However, pre-pregnancy underweight status (OR = 1.698) was a unique risk factor for episodic MIBD, while first-time motherhood, no or discontinuation of breastfeeding, and later postpartum months (OR = 1.540-3.179) were distinctive risk factors for persistent MIBD. CONCLUSION We identified both shared and unique risk factors for episodic and persistent MIBD. Particular attention should be afforded to persistent MIBD and early and proactive interventions to mitigate identified risk factors are recommended.

Abstract
Understanding and assessing mood are pivotal in psychological and psychiatric research, yet existing scales often exhibit limitations such as focusing on singular dimensions of mood and introducing comparative bias through Likert scales. To address these issues, the Chen-HAgiwara Mood Test (CHAMT), a novel three-item scale, was developed. Grounded in the valence-arousal two-dimensional theory of affect, CHAMT offers a comprehensive assessment, focusing on three integral mood components: pleasure, relaxation, and vigor. This study evaluates the reliability, validity, and applicability of CHAMT in capturing mood variations post diverse experimental interventions. The results indicate that CHAMT exhibits high internal consistency and notable item-total correlations, underscoring its reliability. It demonstrated excellent same-day test-retest reliability, with variations observed on different days, implying a potential influence of temporal factors on mood assessments. The notable correlations between CHAMT's components and established external criteria such as positive affect, depression, and state anxiety substantiate its validity in assessing diverse mood dimensions. The examination of different interventions revealed a discernable impact on specific mood components, aligning with theoretical expectations, and showcasing the nuanced interplay between interventions and mood dimensions. The findings suggest that CHAMT holds substantial promise in refining mood assessments in psychological and psychiatric research, due to its brevity, multifaceted approach, and alignment with established theoretical frameworks.

Abstract
The age-related degenerative pathologies of the cervical spinal column that comprise degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) cause myelopathy due spinal cord compression. Functional neurological assessment of DCM can potentially reveal the severity and pathological mechanism of DCM. However, functional assessment by conventional MRI remains difficult. This study used resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to investigate the relationship between functional connectivity (FC) strength and neurophysiological indices and examined the feasibility of functional assessment by FC for DCM. Preoperatively, 34 patients with DCM underwent rs-fMRI scans. Preoperative central motor conduction time (CMCT) reflecting motor functional disability and intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) reflecting sensory functional disability were recorded as electrophysiological indices of severity of the cervical spinal cord impairment. We performed seed-to-voxel FC analysis and correlation analyses between FC strength and the two electrophysiological indices. We found that FC strength between the primary motor cortex and the precuneus correlated significantly positively with CMCT, and that between the lateral part of the sensorimotor cortex and the lateral occipital cortex also showed a significantly positive correlation with SEP amplitudes. These results suggest that we can evaluate neurological and electrophysiological severity in patients with DCM by analyzing FC strengths between certain brain regions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified feelings of loneliness, especially among postpartum women. This nationwide Japanese longitudinal study assessed the impact of such feelings on depressive symptoms and mother-to-infant bonding difficulties (MIBD), two pivotal determinants of maternal and infant well-being. METHODS Starting with a baseline survey conducted between July and August 2021, we tracked 1254 postpartum Japanese women who initially reported minimal depressive symptoms (i.e., Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale < 9) and MIBD (i.e., Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale < 5), over a follow-up period of approximately 6 months. Baseline loneliness was evaluated with the UCLA Loneliness Scale Short-Form (UCLA-LS3-SF3). RESULTS Forty-nine percent of the sample reported the presence of baseline feelings of loneliness. After propensity score matching on sociodemographics and various pregnancy, childbirth, and COVID-19-related aspects, baseline loneliness was associated with increased risks of later depressive symptoms but not MIBD. Using restricted cubic spline logistic regression and considering loneliness as a continuous variable, we found a positive increasing quadratic relationship with depressive symptoms. As loneliness increased, so did the risk of later depressive symptoms. However, there was no significant association between loneliness and MIBD. These results were confirmed through a sensitivity analysis using inverse probability weighting to address attrition bias. CONCLUSION Feelings of postpartum loneliness are associated with future risks of depressive symptoms. The data suggests that addressing loneliness in postpartum women early is crucial to safeguarding their well-being and that of their infants.

Abstract
Recent studies have indicated potential links between short bouts of physical activity like stair-climbing and enhanced creative thinking. However, previous research featured limitations, such as using an uncommon 3 flights round-trip design and lacking baseline creative thinking evaluations. To rectify these limitations and build a more comprehensive understanding, the present study adopts a between-subjects pretest posttest comparison design to scrutinize the effects of ascending stair-climbing on both divergent and convergent thinking. 52 subjects underwent a pretest, followed by random assignment to one of four interventions: ascending stair-climbing for 2, 5, or 8 flights, or taking an elevator for 8 flights, before progressing to a posttest. The results revealed a notable improvement in convergent thinking, measured by the increased number of solved matchstick arithmetic problems (d = 1.165), for participants who climbed 2 flights of stairs compared to those who took the elevator. However, climbing 5 or 8 flights showed no such impact on convergent thinking, and stair-climbing, regardless of the number of flights, did not influence divergent thinking. These findings underscore the utility of brief stair-climbing as an accessible means to enhance convergent thinking in everyday settings, providing a nuanced insight into the relationship between physical activity and creative thinking processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Negative emotions such as depression have been associated with increased absenteeism and presenteeism, contributing to substantial economic loss. However, no study has investigated if positive emotions such as happiness influence absenteeism and presenteeism. METHODS Using data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS), a nationwide survey conducted in September-October 2022 (n = 19,214), we investigated if two major, representative positive emotions (happiness and gratitude) are associated with absenteeism and presenteeism. Absenteeism was defined as reporting more than one day of sick leave in the past one month. Presenteeism was measured with the Work Functioning Impairment Scale. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios. RESULTS 12.4 % and 21.8 % of subjects reported absenteeism and presenteeism, respectively. Logistic regression estimated that after adjusting covariates, happiness was associated with lower odds of absenteeism (OR = 0.792, 95 % CI [0.706, 0.888]) and presenteeism (OR = 0.531, 95 % CI [0.479, 0.588]) while gratitude was associated with lower odds of presenteeism only (OR = 0.705, 95 % CI [0.643, 0.774]). Furthermore, simultaneous presence of both happiness and gratitude was associated with further lower odds of presenteeism (OR = 0.385, 95%CI [0.338, 0.439]), indicating a synergetic relation. DISCUSSION This study is the first to investigate the association between positive emotions and absenteeism and presenteeism. Given the substantial economic loss due to absenteeism and presenteeism, strategies to enhance positive emotions are necessary.

Abstract
AIM Suicidal ideation (SI) is a severe mental health issue in the postpartum period. As depression is a major risk factor of SI, it is often considered that the risk factors of SI are the same as those of postpartum depression. However, SI occurs in women without postpartum depression as well. The aim of this study is to separately examine the prevalence and risk factors of SI in postpartum women with and without depression. METHODS We used data of 5688 postpartum women from a 2021 Japanese nation-wide survey, whose age and geographical distributions were nationally representative. Postpartum depression was evaluated with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and SI was measured with the 10th item of EPDS. RESULTS The prevalence of SI in women with and without depression (EPDS≥9) was 51.8 % and 3.3 %, respectively. Younger age and low family support were risk factors common to both women with and without depression. Being single, currently working, history of depressive disorders, and family members' visits to support being cancelled were risk factors of SI for women with depression. In contrast, primipara, history of psychiatric disorders other than depressive disorders, infectious disease other than colds during pregnancy, and feeling of loneliness increased since COVID-19 were risk factor of SI for women without depression. CONCLUSION Although with a low prevalence, SI occurs in women without postpartum depression, which has unique risk factors indicating distinct psychopathological mechanisms. These findings call for tailored SI intervention strategies according to whether postpartum depression is present or not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and mild cognitive impairment are characterised by impaired cognition accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) relating to mood, including depression, anxiety, and apathy. However, the utility of AD biomarkers for predicting mood symptoms of NPS remains controversial. Herein, we analyzed the relationship between phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and depression, anxiety, and apathy of NPS. We also examined the influence of genetic factors such as apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 on these relationships. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey in older patients (n = 122) with normal cognition (n = 12), mild cognitive impairment (n = 46), and AD (n = 64) strictly diagnosed by the board of psychiatrists and neurologists of Hokkaido University. NPS of the patients were assessed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI). All patients also received a lumbar puncture to obtain cerebral spinal fluid for assessment of p-tau. The inverse probability weighting method was used to adjust for demographic differences between the p-tau present group and the p-tau absent group. RESULTS There was an association between p-tau accumulation and decreased incidence of depression and apathy. APOE ε4 non-carriers also showed a trend toward a negative association between p-tau and depression, which was not evident in APOE ε4 carriers. CONCLUSIONS We provide new evidence for a negative correlation between p-tau and depression and apathy of NPS, which may be influenced by APOE ε4. Future longitudinal studies are required to confirm the utility of p-tau for predicting the course of mood symptoms in patients with cognitive decline.

Abstract
Recent computational psychiatric research has dissected decision-making under risk into different underlying cognitive computational constructs and identified disease-specific changes in these constructs. Studies are underway to investigate what kind of behavioral or psychological interventions can restore these cognitive, computational constructs. In our previous study, we showed that reminiscing about positive autobiographical memories reduced risk aversion and affected probability weighting in the opposite direction from that observed in psychiatric disorders. However, in that study, we compared positive versus neutral memory retrieval by using a within-subjects crossover posttest design. Therefore, the change of decision-making from baseline is unclear. Furthermore, we used a hypothetical decision-making task and did not include monetary incentives. We attempt to address these limitations and investigated how reminiscing about positive autobiographical memories influences decision-making under risk using a between-subjects pretest posttest comparison design with performance-contingent monetary incentives. In thirty-eight healthy, young adults, we found that reminiscing about positive memories reinforced the commonly observed inverted S-shaped nonlinear probability weighting (f = 0.345, medium to large in effect size). In contrast, reminiscing about positive memories did not affect risk aversion in general. Given that the change in probability weighting after reminiscing about positive memories is in the opposite direction from that observed in psychiatric disorders, our results indicate that positive autobiographical memory retrieval might be a useful behavioral intervention strategy for amending the altered decision-making under risk in psychiatric diseases.

Abstract
Physical activity (PA) significantly influences emotional wellbeing, from enhancing mood to counteracting emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. This article offers an in-depth analysis of the neurobiological processes and theories underpinning the emotional benefits of PA which arise from exercise-induced physiological changes that simultaneously benefit brain function. We discuss the role of growth factors, neurotransmitters and biochemicals, as well as enhancements in mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant activity, and how they foster exercise performance and emotional health. Central to our discussion are theories related to depression: the "neurotrophic," "neurogenesis," "inflammation," "oxidative stress," and "monoamine" hypotheses. We also introduce the emergent "glutamate hypothesis" and discuss exercise-induced lactate release as a potential precursor for glutamate. Additionally, we explore the "endorphin" and "endocannabinoid" hypotheses, underscoring their implications in evoking feelings of euphoria, pain relief and diminished anxiety after exercise. In conclusion, PA exerts a diverse influence on brain health and emotional wellbeing. The dynamic interplay between PA and neurobiological processes signals a promising avenue for future research, with the potential to introduce innovative therapeutic strategies for emotional disorders.

Abstract
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the most commonly used screening tool for perinatal depression. However, the 10th item of the EPDS intended to evaluate suicide ideation does not accurately capture suicide ideation and may cause psychological distress. Whereas endorsement of the strongest agreement "yes, quite often" on this item may be associated with suicide ideation, the response on this frequency is perfectly predicted by the EPDS full score. The discard of this item, therefore, is preferred. In the current study, using data from a nation-wide internet survey conducted in Japanese postpartum (n = 5688) and pregnant women (n = 1639), we show that the EPDS-9 without the 10th item correlates perfectly with the full EPDS or EPDS-10. Furthermore, the EPDS-9 and EPDS-10 have equivalent performance in differentiating participants' self-reported depression diagnosis as well as Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6)-based screening of depression. Lastly, at the cutoff of 9, the EPDS-9 performs well in predicting participants' response on the 10th item of EPDS; specifically, the sensitivity of differentiating frequent thoughts of self-harm is 0.968 and 1 in postpartum and pregnant women, respectively. Therefore, the EPDS-9 performs equivalently to EPDS-10 and can be considered to replace EPDS-10 in future use.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate adverse reactions to medications administered during palliative care and compare the responses of Board-Certified Pharmacists in Palliative Pharmacy (BCPPP) and non-BCPPP professionals. Methods: This multicentre prospective survey included hospital and community pharmacists who are members of the Japanese Society for Pharmaceutical Palliative Care and Sciences. Study participants included patients who experienced new drug reactions during the study period and responded to the requested survey items. The follow-up period for each eligible patient began on the day the pharmacists initiated the intervention and ended at discharge, death, or after one month of intervention. The primary endpoint was the impact of pharmacist intervention on adverse drug reactions. The pharmacists included in the study evaluated the severity of adverse drug reactions to assess the effect of their intervention using an integrated palliative care outcome scale before and after the intervention. Key findings: During the survey period, 79 adverse drug reaction intervention reports from 69 patients were obtained from 54 pharmacists (28 certified and 26 non-certified). The response rate was 1.62% (54/3,343). The management of palliative pharmacotherapy side effects by BCPPP and non-BCPPP significantly improved the patients' activities of daily living (P < 0.001). The BCPPP group intervened for significantly more patients with adverse drug reactions and overall adverse drug reactions than the non-BCPPP group (P < 0.023 and P < 0.013, respectively). Conclusion: BCPPP interventions can improve symptom management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to COVID-19 pandemic and behavior restrictions, deterioration of family relations and mental health in child-rearing households has been reported. This study examined whether frequent parent-child exercise (PCE) is associated with improved family relations and parental mental health under COVID-19. METHODS Using data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS), a nationwide survey conducted in August-September 2020, we extracted respondents with children aged 6 to 18 years (n = 2960). Logistic regression was performed to investigate the association between PCE frequency and changes in family relations and parental mental health. RESULTS Compared with participants with 6-12-years old children, those with 13-18-years old children reported less PCE. Among participants with 6-12-years old children, compared to those without PCE, those conducted PCE more than once per week reported more improved relation with children and greater happiness (ORs ≥ 1.69), controlling covariates. Those conducted PCE 3 or more times a week also reported decreased loneliness (OR = 0.68). Whereas PCE conducted 1-2 times a month was not associated with any changes in participants with children of 6-12-years old, it was associated with more improved relations with children and spouses in participants with children of 13-18-years old (ORs ≥ 1.98). DISCUSSION This study is the first to investigate the association of PCE with family relations and parental mental health under COVID-19. Our results suggest that PCE may enhance family relations and parental mental health and the effect may differ according to child's age.

Abstract
Only 50% of patients with depression respond to the first antidepressant drug administered. Thus, biomarkers for prediction of antidepressant responses are needed, as predicting which patients will not respond to antidepressants can optimize selection of alternative therapies. We aimed to identify biomarkers that could predict antidepressant responsiveness using a novel data-driven approach based on statistical pattern recognition. We retrospectively divided patients with major depressive disorder into antidepressant responder and non-responder groups. Comprehensive gene expression analysis was performed using peripheral blood without narrowing the genes. We designed a classifier according to our own discrete Bayes decision rule that can handle categorical data. Nineteen genes showed differential expression in the antidepressant non-responder group (n = 15) compared to the antidepressant responder group (n = 15). In the training sample of 30 individuals, eight candidate genes had significantly altered expression according to quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The expression of these genes was examined in an independent test sample of antidepressant responders (n = 22) and non-responders (n = 12). Using the discrete Bayes classifier with the HERC5, IFI6, and IFI44 genes identified in the training set yielded 85% discrimination accuracy for antidepressant responsiveness in the 34 test samples. Pathway analysis of the RNA sequencing data for antidepressant responsiveness identified that hypercytokinemia- and interferon-related genes were increased in non-responders. Disease and biofunction analysis identified changes in genes related to inflammatory and infectious diseases, including coronavirus disease. These results strongly suggest an association between antidepressant responsiveness and inflammation, which may be useful for future treatment strategies for depression.

Abstract
Introduction Although physical activity and exercise are generally thought to have favorable effects on mental health, excessive physical activity may have unfavorable effects. In this study, the associations between physical activity and the states of mental health with U-shaped dose-response curves were hypothesized, and the ranges of physical activity resulting in optimal effects on mental health were investigated. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1,237 adult volunteers in 2017 and 2018. Of these volunteers, 526 participants validly answered the self-administered questionnaires asking about physical activity, depression, anxiety, resilience, insomnia vulnerability, and life events. A comparison of mental health measures by physical activity levels and quadratic equation model regressions were performed. Results No significant linear associations between physical activity levels and mental health measurements were observed; however, the U-shaped, quadratic equation models indicated a significance. The following levels of physical activity per week optimized the mental health measurements values of the participants: 6,953 MET-minutes and 25.70 h for depression, 5,277 MET-minutes and 21.60 h for state anxiety, 5,678 MET-minutes and 22.58 h for trait anxiety, 25.41 h for resilience, and 9,152 MET-minutes and 31.17 h for insomnia vulnerability. Conclusion Physical activities in the optimal range were associated with more favorable mental health measurements. Physical activities that were too much or too long and outside of the optimal range were associated with less favorable mental health measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperthymic temperament is cheerful action orientation, and is suggested to have a protective effect on depressive symptoms. Responsiveness for reward, which is diminished in depressive patients, is suggested to be related to hyperthymic temperament. Moreover, neural hypoactivation in the reward system in depressive patients is well known. However, only a few previous studies have investigated the neurobiological substrate of hyperthymic temperament. We investigated the relationship between hyperthymic temperament and responsiveness to monetary rewards at the neural level. METHODS Healthy participants performed a modified version of the monetary incentive delay task in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. We explored the brain regions where neural responsiveness for monetary reward was predicted by hyperthymic temperament. RESULTS Brain areas in the reward system were widely activated for reward anticipation. Activation in the left thalamus and left putamen was positively predicted by hyperthymic temperament. Conversely, activation in the ventral striatum and right insula was not modulated by hyperthymic temperament. No region activated for reward outcome was not modulated by hyperthymic temperament. LIMITATIONS Behavioral responsiveness to reward was not predicted by hyperthymic temperament or neural activity. Moreover, we did not correct P values for multiple regression analysis, considering that this was an exploratory study. CONCLUSIONS We found a neurobiological foundation for the protective aspect of hyperthymic temperament against depression in the reward system. Our findings suggest that the hyperthymic temperament may modulate attentional or motor responses or optimal selection of behavior based on reward, rather than value representation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It can be difficult to differentiate psychiatric disorders from depressive states, with little knowledge on how to differentiate them. This study aimed to evaluate changes in brain activity during cognitive and emotional tasks in patients with depressive state to help with differential diagnoses. METHODS Sixty-two patients with depressive states [17 with adjustment disorder (AD), 27 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 18 with bipolar disorder (BD)] and 34 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. We used a verbal fluency task (VFT) and emotional word tasks with happy and threat words. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy measured the relative change in oxygenated hemoglobin in the frontotemporal areas. RESULTS During the VFT, patients with AD or MDD showed significantly reduced activation in the bilateral frontotemporal region (all p < 0.01), whereas patients with BD demonstrated significantly reduced activation in the right frontotemporal areas compared to HC (p < 0.01). During the emotional words task with happy words, patients with MDD showed significantly increased activity in the frontopolar area compared to HC (p = 0.023). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that MDD or BD was significantly associated with brain activity during the happy word task. In distinguishing MDD or BD from HC, the happy words task performed equally well, with an area under the curve of 0.70. LIMITATIONS All study patients were taking psychotropic drugs. CONCLUSIONS Brain activation in response to a combination of cognitive or emotional stimuli could assist in distinguishing patients with depressive states from healthy controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early prediction of high depressive symptoms is crucial for selective intervention and the minimization of functional impairment. Recent cross-sectional studies indicated decision-making deficits in depression, which may be an important contributor to the disorder. Our goal was to test whether description- and experience-based decision making, two major neuroeconomic paradigms of decision-making under uncertainty, predict future depressive symptoms in young adults. METHODS One hundred young adults performed two decision-making tasks, one description-based, in which subjects chose between two gambling options given explicitly stated rewards and their probabilities, and the other experience-based, in which subjects were shown rewards but had to learn the probability of those rewards (or cue-outcome contingencies) via trial-and-error experience. We evaluated subjects' depressive symptoms with BDI-II at baseline (T1) and half a year later (T2). RESULTS Comparing subjects with low versus high levels of depressive symptoms at T2 showed that the latter performed worse on the experience- but not description-based task at T1. Computational modeling of the decision-making process suggested that subjects with high levels of depressive symptoms had a more concave utility function, indicating enhanced risk aversion. Furthermore, a more concave utility function at T1 increased the odds of high depressive symptoms at T2, even after controlling depressive symptoms at T1, perceived stress at T2, and several covariates (OR = 0.251, 95% CI [0.085, 0.741]). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to demonstrate a prospective link between experience-based decision-making and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that enhanced risk aversion in experience-based decision-making may be an important contributor to the development of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Psychiatric disorders such as depressive and anxiety disorders are associated with altered decision-making under risk. Recent advances in neuroeconomics and computational psychiatry have further discomposed risk-based decision-making into distinct cognitive computational constructs and showed that there may be disorder-specific alterations in these constructs. As a result, it has been suggested these cognitive computational constructs may serve as useful behavioral biomarkers for these disorders. However, to date, little is known about what psychological or behavioral interventions can help to reverse and manage the altered cognitive computational constructs underlying risk-based decision-making. In the present study, we set out to investigate whether recalling positive autobiographical memories may affect risk-based decision-making in healthy volunteers using a description-based task. Specifically, based on theories of behavioral economics, we dissected risk preference into two cognitive computational constructs, utility sensitivity and probability weighting. We found that compared to recalling neutral memories, retrieving positive autobiographical memories increased utility sensitivity (Cohen's d = 0.447), indicating reduced risk aversion. Meanwhile, we also tested the influence of memory retrieval on probability weighting, the effect, however, was unreliable and requires further in-depth investigation. Of clinical relevance, the change in risk aversion after recalling positive memories was in the opposite direction compared to those reported in psychiatric disorders. These results argue for the potential therapeutic effect of positive autobiographical memory retrieval for the amendment of altered risk-based decision-making in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Differentiating between bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) during the depressive episode is an important clinical challenge. Reward system abnormalities have received much attention as one of the biological underpinnings of BD and MDD, but few studies have directly compared these abnormalities in remitted and depressed states. METHODS This was a functional MRI study using the Monetary Incentive Delay task in 65 patients (BD [n = 33], MDD [n = 32]) and 33 healthy controls (HC). Regions of interest (ROI) analysis with 21 ROIs related to reward anticipation and 17 ROIs related to gain outcome were implemented, as well as whole-brain analysis. The difference in the dimensional effect of depression on brain activation was also examined. RESULTS Relative to the HC group, BD patients showed significantly decreased activation during reward anticipation in the anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula (AI), and putamen, and MDD patients showed significantly decreased activation in the AI and brainstem. The dimensional effect of depression severity showed a trend-level difference between BD and MDD in the right brainstem and left AI. CONCLUSIONS The current study showed a possible differential effect of depression on the reward system between MDD and BD. Further studies on reward systems might offer reliable markers to distinguish between MDD and BD patients in the depressive phase.

Abstract
Both depressive and anxiety disorders have been associated with excessive risk avoidant behaviors, which are considered an important contributor to the maintenance and recurrence of these disorders. However, given the high comorbidity between the two disorders, their independent association with risk preference remains unclear. Furthermore, due to the involvement of multiple cognitive computational factors in the decision-making tasks employed so far, the precise underlying mechanisms of risk preference are unknown. In the present study, we set out to investigate the common versus unique cognitive computational mechanisms of risk preference in depression and anxiety using a reward-based decision-making task and computational modeling based on economic theories. Specifically, in model-based analysis, we decomposed risk preference into utility sensitivity (a power function) and probability weighting (the one-parameter Prelec weighting function). Multiple linear regression incorporating depression (BDI-II) and anxiety (STAI state anxiety) simultaneously indicated that only depression was associated with one such risk preference parameter, probability weighting. As the symptoms of depression increased, subjects' tendency to overweight small probabilities and underweight large probabilities decreased. Neither depression nor anxiety was associated with utility sensitivity. These associations remained even after controlling covariates or excluding anxiety-relevant items from the depression scale. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess risk preference due to a concave utility function and nonlinear probability weighting separately for depression and anxiety using computational modeling. Our results provide a mechanistic account of risk avoidance and may improve our understanding of decision-making deficits in depression and anxiety.

Abstract
We investigated the vibrational density of states of sodium carboxymethyl starch (CM-starch) by terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. The CM-starch showed a broad peak at ∼3 THz. The structure of the peak was similar to those corresponding to glucose-based polymer glasses possessing hydrogen bonds. The boson peak (BP) appeared at 1.16 THz at the lowest temperature and disappeared because of the existence of excess wing at higher temperatures. However, based on our novel BP frequency determination method using the inflection point of the extinction coefficient, the BP frequency showed almost no dependence on temperature. Further, the chain length dependence of the BP frequency of the glucose-based glasses showed that the BP frequency of the polymer glass was slightly lower than that of the monomer glass. The power law behaviour of the absorption coefficient suggested the existence of fractons, and the fractal dimension was estimated to be 2.33.

Abstract
Recent studies show that even a brief bout of aerobic exercise may enhance creative thinking. However, few studies have investigated the effect of exercise conducted in natural settings. Here, in a crossover randomized controlled trial, we investigated the effect of a common daily activity, stair-climbing, on creative thinking. As experimental intervention, subjects were asked to walk downstairs from the fourth to the first floor and back at their usual pace. As control intervention, they walked the same path but using the elevator instead. Compared to using the elevator, stair-climbing enhanced subsequent divergent but not convergent thinking in that it increased originality on the Alternate Use Test (d = 0.486). Subjects on average generated 61% more original uses after stair-climbing. This is the first study to investigate the effect of stair-climbing on creative thinking. Our findings suggest that stair-climbing may be a useful strategy for enhancing divergent thinking in everyday life.

Abstract
Background A key challenge in the understanding and treatment of depression is identifying cell types and molecular mechanisms that mediate behavioral responses to antidepressant drugs. Because treatment responses in clinical depression are heterogeneous, it is crucial to examine treatment responders and nonresponders in preclinical studies. Methods We used the large variance in behavioral responses to long-term treatment with multiple classes of antidepressant drugs in different inbred mouse strains and classified the mice into responders and nonresponders based on their response in the forced swim test. Medial prefrontal cortex tissues were subjected to RNA sequencing to identify molecules that are consistently associated across antidepressant responders. We developed and used virus-mediated gene transfer to induce the gene of interest in specific cell types and performed forced swim, sucrose preference, social interaction, and open field tests to investigate antidepressant-like and anxiety-like behaviors. Results Cartpt expression was consistently upregulated in responders to four types of antidepressants but not in nonresponders in different mice strains. Responder mice given a single dose of ketamine, a fast-acting non-monoamine-based antidepressant, exhibited high CART peptide expression. CART peptide overexpression in the GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acidergic) neurons of the anterior cingulate cortex led to antidepressant-like behavior and drove chronic stress resiliency independently of mouse genetic background. Conclusions These data demonstrate that activation of CART peptide signaling in GABAergic neurons of the anterior cingulate cortex is a common molecular mechanism across antidepressant responders and that this pathway also drives stress resilience.

Abstract
AIM To longitudinally examine if the results of cognitive tasks or brain function during emotional or cognitive tasks can predict relapse in alcohol use disorder. METHODS We selected 41 patients with alcohol use disorder during hospitalization. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measured the relative change in oxygenated hemoglobin in the frontotemporal areas during an emotional go/no-go task and verbal fluency task (VFT). They performed the N-back and risk-based decision-making tasks for determining working memory or risk-based decision-making. The presence of relapse 6 months following discharge was the primary outcome. RESULTS Twenty-four patients (21 men, three women) remained abstinent, whereas 17 (14 men, three women) relapsed. Compared with the abstinent group, those with relapse displayed significantly decreased activation in the right frontotemporal region during the emotional go/no-go task, significantly shorter reaction time to non-emotional stimuli, and greater risk preference in the risk-based decision-making task. In the abstinent group, we observed a negative correlation between oxygenated hemoglobin and the craving scale. A logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of relapse increased with smaller oxygenated hemoglobin in the right frontotemporal region (odds ratio = 0.161, p = 0.013) and with greater gambling thoughts (odds ratio = 7.04, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Decreased activation in the right frontotemporal region in response to an emotional stimulus and risk preference could predict relapse in alcohol use disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the high comorbidity and shared risk factors between depression and anxiety, whether they represent theoretically distinct disease entities or are just characteristics of a common negative affect dimension remains debated. Employing a data-driven and person-centered approach, the present study aims to identify meaningful and discrete symptom patterns of the occurrence of depression and anxiety. METHODS Using data from an adult sample from the Japanese general population (n = 403, including 184 females, age = 42.28 ± 11.87 years), we applied latent class analysis to identify distinct symptom patterns of depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (STAI Y1). To empirically validate the derived class memberships, we tested the association between the derived classes and personal profiles including childhood experiences, life events, and personality traits. RESULTS The best-fitting solution had four distinct symptom patterns or classes. Whereas both Class 1 and 2 had high depression, Class 1 showed high anxiety due to high anxiety-present symptoms (e.g., "I feel nervous") while Class 2 showed moderate anxiety due to few anxiety-absent symptoms (e.g., "I feel calm"). Class 3 manifested mild anxiety symptoms due to lacking responses on anxiety-absent items. Class 4 manifested the least depressive and anxiety-present symptoms as well as the most anxiety-absent symptoms. Importantly, whereas both Class 1 and 2 had higher childhood neglect and reduced reward responsiveness, etc. compared to Class 4 (i.e., the most healthy class), only Class 1 had greater negative affect and reported more negative life events. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first latent class analysis that examined the symptom patterns of depression and anxiety in Asian subjects. The classes we identified have distinct features that confirm their unique patterns of symptom endorsement. Our findings may provide insights into the etiology of depression, anxiety, and their comorbidity.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of seven-membered iminosugars derived from a 3S-acetamido-4R,5R,6S-trihydroxyazepane scaffold and their evaluation as inhibitors of functionally related exo-N-acetylhexosaminidases including human O-GlcNAcase (OGA), human lysosomal β-hexosaminidase (HexAB), and Escherichia coli NagZ. Capitalizing on the flexibility of azepanes and the active site tolerances of hexosaminidases, we explore the effects of epimerization of stereocenters at C-3, C-5 and C-6 and C-alkylation at the C-2 or C-7 positions. Accordingly, epimerization at C-6 (L-ido) and at C-5 (D-galacto) led to selective HexAB inhibitors whereas introduction of a propyl group at C-7 on the C-3 epimer furnished a potent NagZ inhibitor.

Abstract
Due to the fact that existing pharmacological treatments for depression are not ideal, effort has been devoted to the development of complementary, alternative therapies such as physical exercise. The antidepressant effect of exercise is well documented. However, current recommendations and prescriptions of exercise may be too demanding for depressed patients, as some complain about the design of exercise programs and depression is associated with reduced motivation and capacity to exercise. Therefore, appropriately designed, patient-friendly exercise programs may prove critical for the long-term maintenance and therapeutic effects of exercise. In this pilot study, we developed an exercise program based on patients’ individual level of ventilatory threshold (VT), a submaximal index of aerobic capacity measured by Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPX). Compared to traditional measures, CPX provides more trustable indices of aerobic capacity and more homogenous exercise prescriptions. The main episode of the program consisted of 15–25 min of cycling twice a week at an intensity that approached but never went higher than subjects’ VT (considered low to moderate in intensity). We found that in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder or persistent depressive disorder (n = 8), the program resulted in a significant reduction in depressive symptoms at week 8, which was maintained at week 16. Meanwhile, patients’ social functioning, quality of life, and cognitive functions improved. Although we used a single arm, non-randomized design, our results suggest that even a brief, low to moderate intensity exercise program may exert therapeutic effects for depression and CPX may be a useful tool for exercise prescriptions.

Abstract
Because of the involvement of the brain in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, obtaining information on the biochemical features that directly contribute to symptoms is challenging. The present study aimed to assess fatty acid-binding protein 7 (FABP7) expressed specifically in the brain and detectable in the peripheral blood and to investigate the correlation between blood FABP7 concentration and symptoms. We recruited 30, 29, and 35 patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression and evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-21), respectively. Plasma FABP7 concentrations correlated with PANSS scores (R2 = 0.3305, p < 0.001) but not with other scales. In the analysis of the relationship between five dimensions of schizophrenia symptoms derived from the PANSS 5-factor model and measured plasma FABP7 concentrations, severities of depression/anxiety, cognition, and positive symptom were significantly correlated with plasma FABP7 concentrations. Further molecular investigation of the functional and kinetic analyses of FABP7 is necessary to understand the relationship of this protein with schizophrenia pathology. Nevertheless, the present study suggests that FABP7 can be a biological indicator reflecting the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and has potential applications as a biomarker for diagnosis and symptom assessment.

Abstract
It is well known that black and green tea extracts, particularly polyphenols, have antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic microbes including viruses. However, there is limited data on the antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), which emerged rapidly in China in late 2019 and which has been responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic globally. In this study, 20 compounds and three extracts were obtained from black and green tea and found that three tea extracts showed significant antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2, whereby the viral titre decreased about 5 logs TCID50 per ml by 1·375 mg ml−1 black tea extract and two‐fold diluted tea bag infusion obtained from black tea when incubated at 25°C for 10 s. However, when concentrations of black and green tea extracts were equally adjusted to 344 µg ml−1, green tea extracts showed more antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2. This simple and highly respected beverage may be a cheap and widely acceptable means to reduce SARS‐CoV‐2 viral burden in the mouth and upper gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts in developed as well as developing countries.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The evolutionary conserved NEAT1-MALAT1 gene cluster encounters high interest in cardiovascular medicine and oncology. The cluster generates large primary transcripts which remain nuclear, whereas novel tRNA-like transcripts (mascRNA, menRNA) enzymatically generated from these precursors translocate to the cytosol. We previously found that NEAT1 and MALAT1 deficient mice display accelerated atherosclerosis and vascular inflammation due to immune dysfunctions.
Methods
While the previously investigated mice were deficient in the entire NEAT1 or MALAT1 locus, here we aimed to selectively disrupt only tRNA-like transcripts “menRNA” arising from NEAT1, or “mascRNA” arising from MALAT1. To none of these a biological function has been assigned so far. Both lncRNAs give rise to transcripts of vastly different size (NEAT1: 23kb MENb, 3.7kb MENe, 59nt “menRNA”; MALAT1: 8.3 kb primary, 59nt “mascRNA”), and traditional knockout methods are unable to selectively inactivate one of the small transcripts only. Through CRISPR/Cas9 editing we therefore developed human monocyte-macrophage cell lines with short deletions in the respective tRNA-encoding sequences to disrupt normal menRNA or mascRNA formation, respectively. These editing procedures do not affect transcription of the respective lncRNA parent transcripts, and also not disturb regular formation of the triple-helix structures at their 3'-ends which support stabilization of the respective lncRNAs (Fig. 1).
Results
We found the tRNA-like transcripts menRNA and mascRNA critically influence innate immunity and angiogenesis. In addition to common anomalies resulting from their selective CRISPR-Cas9 mediated deletion (Fig. 1), there are specific disturbances associated with either Δmasc or Δmen cells (Fig. 2).
Both ΔmascRNA and ΔmenRNA human monocytes show profoundly altered ribosomal RNA/protein and tRNA-modifying enzyme expression, display anomalous growth/ angiogenetic factor expression, fundamentally change angiogenetic patterns in co-cultures with human endothelial cells, and have gravely disturbed innate immune responses (LPS, DNA and RNA viruses) (Fig. 1).
CRISPR-engineered ΔmenRNA cells share remakable similarities with human post-MI PBMCs, suggesting the NEAT1-menRNA system may significantly contribute to post-MI residual inflammatory risk despite optimal standard therapy (Fig. 2).
Conclusions
Beyond prior work in knockout mice documenting immune function of the NEAT1-MALAT1 cluster, the current study identifies menRNA and mascRNA as important novel components of human innate immunity with relevance for angiogenetic processes. These data provide a second mechanistic link for the apparent relevance of the NEAT1-MALAT1 gene cluster in cardiovascular and malignant diseases. As prototypes of a novel class of small noncoding RNAs (distinct from miRNAs and siRNAs) they may constitute cytosolic therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Being able to identify trustworthy strangers is a critical social skill. However, whether such impressions are accurate is debatable. Critically, the field currently lacks a quantitative summary of the evidence. To address this gap, we conducted two meta-analyses. We tested whether there is a correlation between perceived and actual trustworthiness across faces, and whether perceivers show above-chance accuracy at assessing trustworthiness. Both meta-analyses revealed significant, modest accuracy (face level, r = .14; perceiver level, r = .27). Perceiver-level effects depended on domain, with aggressiveness and sexual unfaithfulness having stronger effects than agreeableness, criminality, financial reciprocity, and honesty. We also applied research weaving to map the literature, revealing potential biases, including a preponderance of Western studies, a lack of "cross-talk" between research groups, and clarity issues. Overall, this modest accuracy is unlikely to be of practical utility. Moreover, we strongly urge the field to improve reporting standards and generalizability of the results.

Abstract
Cryopreservation of whole blood is useful for DNA collection, and clinical and basic research. Blood samples in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) tubes stored at − 80 °C are suitable for DNA extraction, but not for high-quality RNA extraction. Herein, a new methodology for high-quality RNA extraction from human blood samples is described. Quickly thawing frozen whole blood on aluminum blocks at room temperature could minimize RNA degradation, and improve RNA yield and quality compared with thawing the samples in a 37 °C water bath. Furthermore, the use of the NucleoSpin RNA kit increased RNA yield by fivefold compared with the PAXgene Blood RNA Kit. Thawing blood samples on aluminum blocks significantly increased the DNA yield by ~ 20% compared with thawing in a 37 °C water bath or on ice. Moreover, by thawing on aluminum blocks and using the NucleoSpin RNA and QIAamp DNA Blood kits, the extraction of RNA and DNA of sufficient quality and quantity was achieved from frozen EDTA whole blood samples that were stored for up to 8.5 years. Thus, extracting RNA from frozen whole blood in EDTA tubes after long-term storage is feasible. These findings may help advance gene expression analysis, as well as biomarker research for various diseases.

Abstract
The beneficial effects of regular physical activity (PA) on cognitive functions have received much attention. Recent research suggests that regular PA may also enhance creative thinking, an indispensable cognitive factor for invention and innovation. However, at what intensity regular PA brings the most benefits to creative thinking remains uninvestigated. Furthermore, whether the levels of regular PA affect the acute PA effects on creative thinking is also unclear. In the present study, using a previous dataset that investigated the effects of an acute bout of aerobic exercise on creative thinking in healthy Japanese young adults (22.98 ± 1.95 years old) in the year 2020, we tested the association between different intensities of regular PA (i.e., vigorous, moderate, and walking) and creative thinking with the cross-sectional baseline data using multiple linear regression. We also investigated whether regular PA levels were associated with the acute aerobic exercise intervention effects on creative thinking. The results showed that cross-sectionally, the regular PAs were differentially associated with divergent but not convergent thinking. Specifically, whereas the amount of vigorous-intensity PA was positively associated with fluency and flexibility, the amount of walking was positively associated with novelty on the alternate uses test (AUT) measuring divergent thinking. Importantly, the explained variances of fluency, flexibility, and novelty were 20.3% (p = 0.040), 18.8% (p = 0.055), and 20.1% (p = 0.043), respectively. None of the regular PAs predicted convergent thinking (i.e., an insight problem-solving task), nor were they associated with the acute aerobic exercise intervention effects on divergent and convergent thinking. These findings suggest that engaging in regular vigorous-intensity PA and walking may be useful strategies to enhance different aspects of divergent thinking in daily life.

Abstract
Although stressful events predispose individuals to psychiatric disorders, such as depression, not all people who undergo a stressful life experience become depressed, suggesting that gene-environment interactions (GxE) determine depression risk. The ventral hippocampus (vHPC) plays key roles in motivation, sociability, anhedonia, despair-like behaviors, anxiety, sleep, and feeding, pointing to the involvement of this brain region in depression. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the cross talk between the vHPC and GxE in shaping behavioral susceptibility and resilience to chronic stress remain elusive. Here, we show that Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIβ (CaMKIIβ) activity in the vHPC is differentially modulated in GxE mouse models of depression susceptibility and resilience, and that CaMKIIβ-mediated TARPγ-8 phosphorylation enhances the expression of AMPA receptor subunit GluA1 in the postsynaptic sites to enable stress resilience. We present previously missing molecular mechanisms underlying chronic stress-elicited behavioral changes, providing strategies for preventing and treating stress-related psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
The core light-harvesting complexes (LH1) in bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) b-containing purple phototrophic bacteria are characterized by a near-infrared absorption maximum around 1010 nm. The determinative cause for this ultra-redshift remains unclear. Here, we present results of circular dichroism (CD) and resonance Raman measurements on the purified LH1 complexes in a reaction center-associated form from a mesophilic and a thermophilic Blastochloris species. Both the LH1 complexes displayed purely positive CD signals for their Qy transitions, in contrast to those of BChl a-containing LH1 complexes. This may reflect differences in the conjugation system of the bacteriochlorin between BChl b and BChl a and/or the differences in the pigment organization between the BChl b- and BChl a-containing LH1 complexes. Resonance Raman spectroscopy revealed remarkably large redshifts of the Raman bands for the BChl b C3-acetyl group, indicating unusually strong hydrogen bonds formed with LH1 polypeptides, results that were verified by a published structure. A linear correlation was found between the redshift of the Raman band for the BChl C3-acetyl group and the change in LH1-Qy transition for all native BChl a- and BChl b-containing LH1 complexes examined. The strong hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions between BChl b and nearby aromatic residues in the LH1 polypeptides, along with the CD results, provide crucial insights into the spectral and structural origins for the ultra-redshift of the long-wavelength absorption maximum of BChl b-containing phototrophs.

Abstract
When making decisions, people tend to overweigh the impact of losses compared to gains, a phenomenon known as loss aversion (LA). A moderate amount of LA may be adaptive as it is necessary for protecting oneself from danger. However, excessive LA may leave people few opportunities and ultimately lead to suboptimal outcomes. Despite frequent reports of elevated LA in specific populations such as patients with depression, little is known about what psychological characteristics are associated with the tendency of LA. Based on the neurobiological studies of LA, we hypothesized that positive psychological wellbeing may be negatively associated with people's tendency of LA. In the present study, we set out to test this hypothesis in a sample of young adults. We evaluated LA using a decision-making task in which subjects were asked to decide whether to accept or reject a series of coin-toss gambles. Our results revealed that individuals with more advanced personal growth as assessed by the Ryff's Psychological Well-being Inventory showed reduced LA. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating an association between positive psychological wellbeing and LA. These findings suggest that personal growth might be employed as interventional targets for correcting excessive LA in vulnerable populations.

Introduction
Cervical spine (c-spine) injury has a high morbidity and mortality in patients over the age of 65; more than 60% result from falls from standing height (Beedham et al., 2019).
The Canadian Cervical Spine Rule (Stiell et al., 2001) deems that there is a high risk of c-spine fracture if any of the following apply:
The c-spine cannot be cleared clinically if the patient fits any of the above criteria. Imaging should be considered. As a result of recent clinical experiences Trust Guidelines at Stoke Mandeville Hospital now reflect this evidence (Hadley et al., 2019).
Methods
Fifty patients over the age of 65 who had a computerised tomography (CT) head scan in the Emergency Department (ED) following a traumatic head injury were randomly selected over a 1 month period. Cases were checked for examination of c-spine and/or CT c-spine. Results of the first cycle of the audit were presented at an ED Education Meeting. Indications for CT c-spine were displayed in poster format around the ED. Following these interventions, a re-audit was carried out using the same methodology.
Results
In fifty patients aged over 65 attending ED during one month, 16% had a CT c-spine in addition to a CT head. There was documented c-spine examination of 16% of those without CT c-spine on admission. In the re-audit 38% of the fifty patients who had a CT head underwent CT c-spine. In the group that did not have imaging of the c-spine, the proportion with documented cervical spine examination on admission remained the same (16%).
Conclusion
There was a 137.5% increase in the number of patients aged over 65 who appropriately underwent a CT c-spine as per Trust and National guidelines. Simple interventions (staff education and posters within the ED) were sufficient to significantly alter practice. Current trauma triage is not optimal for older patients who are reviewed by more junior doctors, less likely to be transferred to Major Trauma Centres and more likely to die than younger patients with similar injuries (Major Trauma In Older People 2017 Report). An older person’s trauma team in ED with age-appropriate triage would lead to appropriate imaging in a timely fashion, potentially improving the morbidity and mortality of these vulnerable patients.

Abstract
The euthymic state of bipolar disorder is often characterized by impaired cognitive function. In this investigation, we hypothesized that subjective cognitive function is impaired and illness awareness is inadequate and we further explored the associations among cognitive complaints, objective cognitive functions, and current illness awareness in Japanese patients. Twenty-seven patients in remission and 27 healthy subjects were recruited in this study. The Japanese version of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) and Scale to Assess Unawareness in Mental Disorders (Japanese, SUMD-J) were used to assess each patient. All patients underwent neuropsychological tests for the assessment of objective cognitive functions. Only SUMD2.C (current awareness of the effects of medication) was significantly correlated with COBRA, and the objective cognitive assessments, Word Fluency Test and Stroop Test Reaction Time, represented significant correlations with SUMD1.C (current awareness of mental illness). In remitted bipolar outpatients, both the objective and subjective cognitive functions were found to be associated with illness awareness. However, subjective and objective cognitive functions differed in the related illness awareness subscales in fully remitted bipolar outpatients.
