Fast start-up and stable performance coupled to sulfate reduction in the nitrobenzene bio-reduction system and its microbial community

Boosting o-xylene removal and power generation in an airlift microbial fuel cell system

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are widely acknowledged to be a promising eco-friendly abatement technology of pollutants, and are capable of generating electricity. However, the poor mass transfer and reaction rate in MFCs significantly decrease their treatment capacity for contaminants, especially hydrophobic substances. The present work developed a novel MFC integrated with an airlift (ALR) reactor using a polypyrrole modified anode to promote the bioaccessibility of gaseous o-xylene and attachment of microorganisms. The results indicated that the established ALR-MFC system showed excellent elimination capability, with removal efficiency exceeding 84% even at high o-xylene concentration (1600 mg m^-3). The maximum output voltage of 0.549 V and power density of 13.16 mW m^-2 obtained by the Monod-type model were approximately twice and sixfold higher than that of a conventional MFC, respectively. According to the microbial community analysis, the superior performances of the ALR-MFC in terms of o-xylene removal and power generation were mainly ascribed to the enrichment of degrader (i.e. Shinella) and electrochemical active bacteria (i.e. Proteiniphilum). Moreover, the electricity generation of the ALR-MFC did not decrease at a high O₂ concentration, as O₂ was conducive to o-xylene degradation and electron release. The supplication of an external carbon source such as sodium acetate (NaAc) was conducive to increasing output voltage and coulombic efficiency. The electrochemical analysis revealed that released electrons can be transmitted with the action of NADH dehydrogenase to OmcZ, OmcS, and OmcA outer membrane proteins via a direct or indirect pathway, and ended up transferring to the anode directly.

Comparative evaluation on the utilization of applied electrical potential in a conductive granule packed biotrickling filter for continuous abatement of xylene: Performance, limitation, and microbial community

This study investigates the use of electrically conductive granules as packing material in biotrickling filter (BTF) systems as to provide insights on the specific microbial abundance and functions during the treatment of xylene-containing waste gas. In addition, the effect of applied potential on attached biofilm on conductive granules during xylene degradation was briefly investigated. During stable operation period, the conductive granules packed BTF achieved reactor performance of no less than 80% with a maximum EC of 137.7 g/m³ h. Under applied potential of 1V, the BTF system showed deterioration of xylene removal by ranging from 21 to 76%, which also affected the distribution and relative abundance of the major microorganisms such as Xanthobacter, Acidovorax, Rhodococcus, Hydrogenophaga, Arthrobacter, Brevundimonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, Devosia, Shinella, Sphingobium, Dokdonella, Pseudomonas and Bosea. The acclimation of applied potential led to the enrichment of autotrophic bacteria and strains, which are correlated to improved nitrogen cycling. In general, applying electrical potential is feasible to shape the microbiological structure of biofilms to selectively adjust their biochemical functions.

Efficient reduction of nitrobenzene by sulfate-reducer enriched biocathode in microbial electrolysis cell

This study aimed to enhance treatment of wastewater containing nitrobenzene (NB) and sulfate using biocathode enriched with sulfate-reducing bacteria in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Artificial wastewater with 50 mg L^-1 NB and 200 mg L^-1 sulfate was used as the catholyte. With 0.8 V applied voltage, removal efficiencies of NB and sulfate reached 98% and 34%, respectively, within 36 h. Aniline and sulfide were the main reductive products in the catholyte with concentrations increased to 0.32 and 0.51 mM, which accounted for 97% and 78% of the removed NB and sulfate, respectively. Sulfate-reducer Desulfovibrio sp. and Wolinella sp. played the dominant role in the biocathode for the reductions of sulfate and NB. Analyses of scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the formation of elemental S on the biocathode surface. The relative abundance of sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thioclava sp. reached 24% on the biocathode. The results indicated that the oxidation process from S^2- to S⁰ occurred on the biocathode, which provided electrons to biofilm for NB reduction. The MEC with sulfate-reducer enriched biocathode can be used as an alternative to treat complex wastewater containing NB and sulfate.

Enhanced removal of organic matter and typical disinfection byproduct precursors in combined iron-carbon micro electrolysis-UBAF process for drinking water pre-treatment

The organic matter and two types of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in micro-polluted source water were removed using an iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (ICME) combined with up-flow biological aerated filter (UBAF) process. Two pilot-scale experiments (ICME-UBAF and UBAF alone) were used to investigate the effect of the ICME system on the removal of organic matter and DBP precursors. The results showed that ICME pretreatment removed 15.6% of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and significantly improved the removal rate in the subsequent UBAF process. The ICME system removed 31% of trichloromethane (TCM) precursors and 20% of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) precursors. The results of measurements of the molecular weight distribution and hydrophilic fractions of DOM and DBP precursors showed that ICME pretreatment played a key role in breaking large-molecular-weight organic matter into low-molecular-weight components, and the hydrophobic fraction into hydrophilic compounds, which was favorable for subsequent biodegradation by UBAF. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) further indicated that the ICME system improved the removal of TCM and DCAN precursors. The biomass analysis indicated the presence of a larger and more diverse microbial community in the ICME-UBAF system than for the UBAF alone. The high-throughput sequencing results revealed that domination of the genera Sphingomonas, Brevundimonas and Sphingorhabdus contributed to the better removal of organic matter and two types of DBP precursors. Also, Nitrosomonas and Pseudomonas were beneficial for ammonia removal.

Effects of glucose and starch on the toxicity of nitrobenzene to plants and microbes in constructed wetlands

Photosynthetic pigment content, antioxidant enzyme activities of plants, microbial enzyme activities and community structure were analyzed to investigate the effects of glucose and starch on the toxicity of nitrobenzene (NB) to plants and microbes in constructed wetlands (CWs). As the influent NB concentration increased from 10 mg/L to 100 mg/L, the NB removal efficiency of the blank group decreased from 97.1% to 75.02%. However, the NB removal efficiencies of the external carbon source groups were maintained at nearly 100%. External carbon sources accelerated the transformation process of NB to aniline (AN), thus decreasing NB toxicity to the microbes and plants. When the influent NB concentration reached 100 mg/L, the NB removal rates and NB reductase activities of the external carbon source groups were 2.4 times and 4 times higher, respectively, than those of the blank group. Most of the dominant genera found in the three CWs could reduce nitroaromatics to the corresponding aromatic amines according to the results of high-throughput sequencing. The performance of NB removal in the CWs indicated the potential of CWs for NB treatment and the necessity of external carbon sources under high NB concentrations.

Performance and bacterial diversity of biotrickling filters filled with conductive packing material for the treatment of toluene

Toluene has high toxicity and mutagenicity, thus, the removal of toluene from air is necessary. In this study, two biotrickling filters (BTFs) were constructed and packed with conductive packing material to treat toluene waste gas. BTF-O exhibited good toluene removal performance even under high toluene inlet concentration, and over 80% of removal efficiency was observed. The elimination capacity reached 120.1 g/m³ h corresponding to an inlet concentration of 2.259 g/m³ under 61.5 s of empty bed retention time. During toluene biodegradation, the output voltage was observed in BTF-O and BTF-E, moreover BTF-E also showed slight power storage capacity. The applied voltage inhibited toluene removal and affected the bacterial community. The predominant bacterial genera in BTF-O were Acidovorax, Rhodococcus, Hydrogenophaga, Brevundimonas, Arthrobacter, Pseudoxanthomonas, Devosia, Gemmobacter, Rhizobium, Dokdonella and Pseudomonas. Genera Xanthobacter and Pelomonas accounted for the main bacterial community in BTF-E.

Graphene oxide as electron shuttle for increased redox conversion of contaminants under methanogenic and sulfate-reducing conditions

Graphene oxide (GO) is reported for the first time as electron shuttle to increase the redox conversion of the azo compound, reactive red 2 (RR2, 0.5mM), and the nitroaromatic, 3-chloronitrobenzene (3CNB, 0.5mM). GO (5mgL(-1)) increased 10-fold and 7.6-fold the reduction rate of RR2 and 3CNB, respectively, in abiotic incubations with sulfide (2.6mM) as electron donor. GO also increased by 2-fold and 3.6-fold, the microbial reduction rate of RR2 by anaerobic sludge under methanogenic and sulfate-reducing conditions, respectively. Deep characterization of GO showed that it has a proper size distribution (predominantly between 450 and 700nm) and redox potential (+50.8mV) to promote the reduction of RR2 and 3CNB. Further analysis revealed that biogenic sulfide plays a major role on the GO-mediated reduction of RR2. GO is proposed as an electron shuttle to accelerate the redox conversion of recalcitrant pollutants, such as nitro-benzenes and azo dyes.

Enhanced reduction of an azo dye using henna plant biomass as a solid-phase electron donor, carbon source, and redox mediator

The multiple effects of henna plant biomass as a source of carbon, electron donor, and redox mediator (RM) on the enhanced bio-reduction of Orange II (AO7) were investigated. The results indicated that the maximum AO7 reduction rate in the culture with henna powder was ∼6-fold that in the sludge control culture lacking henna. On the one hand, AO7 reduction can be advantageously enhanced by the release of available electron donors; on the other hand, the associated lawsone can act as a fixed RM and play a potential role in shuttling electrons from the released electron donors to the final electron acceptor, AO7. The soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) during each experiment and the FTIR spectra suggested that the weakened AO7 reduction along with the retention of henna powder might not be attributed to the lack of fixed lawsone but rather to the insufficiency of electron donors.

H2S removal and bacterial structure along a full-scale biofilter bed packed with polyurethane foam in a landfill site

Hydrogen sulfide accumulated under a cover film in a landfill site was treated for 7 months by a full-scale biofilter packed with polyurethane foam cubes. Sampling ports were set along the biofilter bed to investigate H2S removal and microbial characteristics in the biofilter. The H2S was removed effectively by the biofilter, and over 90% removal efficiency was achieved in steady state. Average elimination capacity of H2S was 2.21 g m(-3) h(-1) in lower part (LPB) and 0.41 g m(-3) h(-1) in upper part (UPB) of the biofilter. Most H2S was eliminated in LPB. H2S concentration varied along the polyurethane foam packed bed, the structure of the bacterial communities showed spatial variation in the biofilter, and H2S removal as well as products distribution changed accordingly. The introduction of odorants into the biofilter shifted the distribution of the existing microbial populations toward a specific culture that could metabolize the target odors.
