Abstract
We investigated the effect of dilution rates (D) (0.05, 0.15, and 0.4 h-1) and its transition mode strategies (constant, up, and down modes) on organic acid productivity and bacterial community structure on continuous meta-fermentation using complex microorganisms. The number of bacterial species decreased with increasing D in the constant mode while up and down modes maintained high and low values, respectively, regardless of the changing D values. Caldibacillus hisashii was the predominant species in all modes at all D values, while other bacterial species, including Anaerosalibacter bizertensis and Clostridium cochlearium were predominant in only certain modes and D values. The highest total organic acid productivity of 3.16 g L-1 h-1 was obtained with 82.2% lactic acid selectivity at D = 0.4 h⁻1 in constant mode. Heterofermentation occurred in the up mode, while the down mode exhibited the maximum butyric acid productivity of 0.348 g L-1 h-1 with 43.8% selectivity at D = 0.05 h-1. The constant, up, and down modes showed the distinct main products of lactic, acetic and formic, and butyric acids, respectively. In this study, we proposed a new parameter of species-specific productivity (SSP) to estimate which species and how much a bacterium quantitatively contributes to the targeted organic acid productivity in continuous meta-fermentation. SSP was determined based on the abundance of functional genes encoding key enzymes from the results of 16S amplicon analysis. In conclusion, D values and their transition modes affect productivity by changing the bacterial community structure, and are a significant factor in establishing a highly productive process in continuous meta-fermentation.

Abstract
Due to its low carbon footprint and environmental friendliness, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely produced bioplastics in the world. Manufacturing attempts to partially replace petrochemical plastics with PLA are growing year over year. Although this polymer is typically used in high-end applications, its use will increase only if it can be produced at the lowest cost. As a result, food wastes rich in carbohydrates can be used as the primary raw material for the production of PLA. Lactic acid (LA) is typically produced through biological fermentation, but a suitable downstream separation process with low production costs and high product purity is also essential. The global PLA market has been steadily expanding with the increased demand, and PLA has now become the most widely used biopolymer across a range of industries, including packaging, agriculture, and transportation. Therefore, the necessity for an efficient manufacturing method with reduced production costs and a vital separation method is paramount. The primary goal of this study is to examine the various methods of lactic acid synthesis, together with their characteristics and the metabolic processes involved in producing lactic acid from food waste. In addition, the synthesis of PLA, possible difficulties in its biodegradation, and its application in diverse industries have also been discussed.

Abstract
Compost is used worldwide as a soil conditioner for crops, but its functions have still been explored. Here, the omics profiles of carrots were investigated, as a root vegetable plant model, in a field amended with compost fermented with thermophilic Bacillaceae for growth and quality indices. Exposure to compost significantly increased the productivity, antioxidant activity, color, and taste of the carrot root and altered the soil bacterial composition with the levels of characteristic metabolites of the leaf, root, and soil. Based on the data, structural equation modeling (SEM) estimated that amino acids, antioxidant activity, flavonoids and/or carotenoids in plants were optimally linked by exposure to compost. The SEM of the soil estimated that the genus Paenibacillus and nitrogen compounds were optimally involved during exposure. These estimates did not show a contradiction between the whole genomic analysis of compost-derived Paenibacillus isolates and the bioactivity data, inferring the presence of a complex cascade of plant growth-promoting effects and modulation of the nitrogen cycle by the compost itself. These observations have provided information on the qualitative indicators of compost in complex soil-plant interactions and offer a new perspective for chemically independent sustainable agriculture through the efficient use of natural nitrogen.

Abstract
Background The global market for lactic acid is witnessing growth on the back of increasing applications of lactic acid for manufacturing polylactic acid. Indeed, the lactic acid market is expected to reach 9.8 billion US dollars by 2025. The new concept of meta-fermentation has been proposed in recent years as an alternative to fermentation with pure cultures, due to multiple advantages such as lower susceptibility to contamination, no need for sterilization of culture media or lower raw material costs. However, there are still challenges to overcome to increase the conversion efficiency, decrease formation of by-products and facilitate fermentation control. In this context, the purpose of the study was to develop a robust meta-fermentation process to efficiently produce lactic acid from the OFMSW, stable at pre-industrial scale (1500 L). To maximize lactic acid production, operating conditions (pH, HRT) were modified, and a novel bioaugmentation strategy was tested. Results A LAB-rich inoculum was generated with LAB isolated from the digestate and grown in the laboratory with MRS medium. After feeding this inoculum to the digester (bioaugmentation), lactic acid accumulation up to 41.5 gO2/L was achieved under optimal operating conditions. This corresponds to more than 70% of the filtered COD measured in the digestate. The amount of lactic acid produced was higher than the volatile fatty acids under all feeding strategies applied. Conclusions The operating conditions that enhanced the production of lactic acid from mixed cultures were 55ºC, 2 days HRT and pH 4.8–5.7, with pH-control once a day. The bioaugmentation strategy improved the results obtained in the prototype without applying reinoculation. Lactic acid was the main product along with other carboxylic acids. Further improvements are needed to increase purity as well as lactic acid concentration to reach economic feasibility of the whole process (digestion of OFMSW and downstream). Abstract
Effective biological utilization of wood biomass is necessary worldwide. Since several insect larvae can use wood biomass as a nutrient source, studies on their digestive microbial structures are expected to reveal a novel rule underlying wood biomass processing. Here, structural inferences for inhabitant bacteria involved in carbon and nitrogen metabolism for beetle larvae, an insect model, were performed to explore the potential rules. Bacterial analysis of larval feces showed enrichment of the phyla Chroloflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, and Planctomycetes, and the genera Bradyrhizobium, Chonella, Corallococcus, Gemmata, Hyphomicrobium, Lutibacterium, Paenibacillus, and Rhodoplanes, as bacteria potential involved in plant growth promotion, nitrogen cycle modulation, and/or environmental protection. The fecal abundances of these bacteria were not necessarily positively correlated with their abundances in the habitat, indicating that they were selectively enriched in the feces of the larvae. Correlation and association analyses predicted that common fecal bacteria might affect carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Based on these hypotheses, structural equation modeling (SEM) statistically estimated that inhabitant bacterial groups involved in carbon and nitrogen metabolism were composed of the phylum Gemmatimonadetes and Planctomycetes, and the genera Bradyrhizobium, Corallococcus, Gemmata, and Paenibacillus, which were among the fecal-enriched bacteria. Nevertheless, the selected common bacteria, i.e., the phyla Acidobacteria, Armatimonadetes, and Bacteroidetes and the genera Candidatus Solibacter, Devosia, Fimbriimonas, Gemmatimonas Opitutus, Sphingobium, and Methanobacterium, were necessary to obtain good fit indices in the SEM. In addition, the composition of the bacterial groups differed depending upon metabolic targets, carbon and nitrogen, and their stable isotopes, δ13C and δ15N, respectively. Thus, the statistically derived causal structural models highlighted that the larval fecal-enriched bacteria and common symbiotic bacteria might selectively play a role in wood biomass carbon and nitrogen metabolism. This information could confer a new perspective that helps us use wood biomass more efficiently and might stimulate innovation in environmental industries in the future.

Abstract
Lactic acid production from food waste via fermentation is environmentally sustainable. However, the characteristics of food waste fermentation to produce lactic acid are not well understood due to the complexity of food waste. This study aims to understand the effects of key variables on the characteristics of food waste fermentation to maximize lactic acid production. Food waste was enzymatically hydrolyzed and fermented by Lactobacillus pentosus. Key fermentation variables, including nitrogenous nutrient supplementation, initial sugar concentration, and pH, were investigated in batch fermentation to unveil their effects on fermentation titer, yield, and productivity. The results showed that supplementation of 0.25% (w/v%) yeast extract and peptone to the food waste fermentation media significantly improved fermentation titer and productivity, but further increase in the supplementation level did not improve fermentation. Increasing the initial sugar concentration from 40 g/L to 100 g/L increased the fermentation titer from 41.0 g/L to 93.0 g/L and productivity from 0.34 g/L/h to 0.76 g/L/h. pH 6.0 was the optimal pH for the fermentation. At the optimal conditions, food waste fermentation resulted in the highest fermentation titer, yield, and productivity of 106.7 g/L, 1.12 g/g, and 3.09 g/L/h, respectively. The high fermentation yield of 1.12 g/g might be explained by the extra lactic acid production from unidentified compounds in food waste hydrolysates. By applying fed-batch fermentation, the lactic acid concentration reached 157.0 g/L with a yield and overall productivity of 0.92 g/g and 2.0 g/L/h, respectively. Based on the mass balance, a total of 251 kg lactic acid was produced from 1000 kg food waste. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Food waste is one of the largest municipal solid wastes in the US, and most food waste ends up in landfills, causing significant economic losses and environmental concerns. In this study, we developed a fermentation process to convert food waste into biorenewable lactic acid and demonstrated that food waste is a superior feedstock for fermentation due to its embedded nutrients. Moreover, due to the embedded nutrients in food waste, the supplementation of yeast extract and peptone to fermentation can be reduced by over 50%, which can reduce the operating cost of lactic acid fermentation on an industrial scale.

Abstract
AIMS Probiotic effects of compost containing thermophiles on productivity have been reported in domestic animals, although not cattle. We evaluated the effects of administering Caldibacillus hisashii, a thermophile contained in compost, on growth, blood components, faecal organic acid concentrations and microbiota population in Japanese black calves. METHODS AND RESULTS Calves were administered C. hisashii from 3 to 5 mo of age. Administering C. hisashii decreased feed intake without affecting body weight, indicating that feed efficiency is improved by administration. Administering C. hisashii decreased plasma insulin concentration without affecting glucose and nonesterified fatty acid concentrations. Chao1 was decreased by exposure at 5 mo of age. Similarly, weighted- and unweighted UniFrac distances were affected by treatment at 5 mo of age. Faecal abundance of the phylum Bacteroidetes tended to be increased by exposure. Faecal propionic acid concentration was correlated positively with faecal abundance of phylum Bacteroidetes but negatively with that of Firmicutes. Interestingly, the population of the genus Methanobrevibacter, representing the majority of methanogens, was lowered by exposure and was negatively correlated with faecal propionic acid concentration. CONCLUSION Administration of C. hisashii has the potential to improve growth performance of Japanese black calves and to contribute to reducing environmental load, which may be associated with altered endocrine kinetics and gut microbial populations. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACTS OF THE STUDY This study revealed that isolated thermophiles included in compost may exert probiotic effects on calves.

Abstract
It is promising to recover lactic acid (LA) from fermentation of food waste (FW). In this study, pH and temperatures were investigated comprehensively to find their effects on LA fermentation, and microbial analyses were used to take insight to the variation of LA production. The results showed that mesophilic fermentation benefited hydrolysis and acidification, leading to a high yield of LA, while thermophilic conditions restricted other producers at low pH, leading to a high purity of LA. Lactobacillus amylolyticus was the main LA producer under thermophilic conditions, but Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum boomed at pH 5.0-6.0 and it converted LA partly to butyric acid. Simultaneously, Bacillus coagulans also increased and improved the optical purity (OP) of L-LA. From a series of this study, an operational condition of pH 5.5 and temperature of 52 °C would be potentially suitable for lactate fermentation of FW with high purity of 89%, while a stable LA production with an OP of 68% was achieved at 55 °C and pH 6.0.

Abstract
Meta-l-lactic acid fermentation from non-treated kitchen refuse was reconstructed using a combination of isolated bacterial strains under several pH control strategies. The meta-fermentation system was successfully reconstructed using a combination of Weizmannia coagulans MN-07, Caldibacillus thermoamylovorans OM55-6, and Caldibacillus hisashii N-11 strains. Additionally, a simplified constant pH control strategy was employed, which decreased fermentation time and increased production. The optimum pH (6.5) for the reconstructed meta-fermentation was favorable for the respective pure cultures of the three selected strains. The l-lactic acid production performance of the reconstructed meta-fermentation system was as follows: concentration, 24.5 g L-1 ; optical purity, 100%; productivity, 0.341 g L-1 h-1 ; yield, 1.06 g g-1 . These results indicated that constant pH control was effective in the reconstructed meta-fermentation with the best performance of l-lactic acid production at pH optimal for the selected bacterial growth, while the switching from swing pH control would suppress the activities of unfavorable bacterial species in un-isolated meta-fermentation.

Abstract
Lactic acid is an organic compound produced via fermentation by different microorganisms that are able to use different carbohydrate sources. Lactic acid bacteria are the main bacteria used to produce lactic acid and among these, Lactobacillus spp. have been showing interesting fermentation capacities. The use of Bacillus spp. revealed good possibilities to reduce the fermentative costs. Interestingly, lactic acid high productivity was achieved by Corynebacterium glutamicum and E. coli, mainly after engineering genetic modification. Fungi, like Rhizopus spp. can metabolize different renewable carbon resources, with advantageously amylolytic properties to produce lactic acid. Additionally, yeasts can tolerate environmental restrictions (for example acidic conditions), being the wild-type low lactic acid producers that have been improved by genetic manipulation. Microalgae and cyanobacteria, as photosynthetic microorganisms can be an alternative lactic acid producer without carbohydrate feed costs. For lactic acid production, it is necessary to have substrates in the fermentation medium. Different carbohydrate sources can be used, from plant waste as molasses, starchy, lignocellulosic materials as agricultural and forestry residues. Dairy waste also can be used by the addition of supplementary components with a nitrogen source.

Abstract
In this work, water washing pretreatment was employed on kitchen waste (KW) to integrate a multi-product biorefinery process for producing biogas, biodiesel, bacterial cellulose (BC) and biofertilizer. As a crucial stream in this biorefinery process, BC production were investigated to clarify the effects of residual salt and cooked oil. Meanwhile, glycerol, a by-product in biodiesel stream, as carbon source was attempted to produce BC. Results indicated that BC yield was significantly promoted from 0.11 g L-1 to 2.07 g L-1 as NaCl content decreased from 0.44% to 0.04%. Correspondingly, the BC crystallinity increased from 30.1% to 57.4% and the tensile strength increased from 3.30 MPa to 21.64 MPa. In addition, the residual cooked oil didn't affect the BC yield significantly, however, the crystallinity was greatly decreased from 57.4% to 34.5% as more cooked oil was remained in the medium of KW, and the tensile strength was decreased from 21.64 MPa to 4.30 MPa, correspondingly. Obviously, reducing the salt and cooked oil content in the starch fraction of KW by intensifying the water washing pretreatment will greatly benefit the BC yield and qualities. When the glycerol from biodiesel stream was employed for BC production with content of 10 g L-1-25 g L-1, 34.2%-44.0% increase on BC yield can be achieved. By contrast, extra higher glycerol content (50 g L-1) reduced the BC yield by 41%. However, the crystallinity and the tensile strength were increased by 18% and 2.2-folds, respectively. Therefore, the biodiesel stream can be well integrated in the process via producing BC with by-product of glycerol as a replaceable carbon source. Based on the results above, a more sustainable biorefinery process of KW via BC production can be achieved, which will potentially offer a new path to valorize the daily-released KW.

Abstract
Food and kitchen waste - omnipresent in every corner of the world serve as an excellent source of value added products owing to high organic content. Regardless of existence of various traditional methods of land filling or biogas production used to harness food waste energy, effective conversion of food to valuable resources is often challenged by its heterogenous nature and high moisture content. The current paper tries to lay down the prospects and consequences associated with food waste management. The various social, economical and environmental concerns associated with food waste management especially in terms of green house gas emission and extended rate of leachate generation also has been discussed. The difficulties in proper collection, storage and bioconversion of food waste to valuable by-products are pointed as a big hurdle in proper waste management. Finally, the wide array of value added products developed from food waste after pretreatment are also enlisted to emphasis the prospects of food waste management.

Abstract
A major biological challenge in the postgenomic era has been untangling the composition and functions of microbes that inhabit complex communities or microbiomes. Multi-omics and modern bioinformatics have provided the tools to assay molecules across different cellular and community scales; however, mechanistic knowledge over microbial interactions often remains elusive. This is due to the immense diversity and the essentially undiminished volume of not-yet-cultured microbes. Simplified model communities hold some promise in enabling researchers to manage complexity so that they can mechanistically understand the emergent properties of microbial community interactions. In this review, we surveyed several approaches that have effectively used tractable model consortia to elucidate the complex behavior of microbial communities. We go further to provide some perspectives on the limitations and new opportunities with these approaches and highlight where these efforts are likely to lead as advances are made in molecular ecology and systems biology.

Abstract
A unique autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) process has been used to convert human excreta to liquid fertilizer in Japan. This study investigated the changes in physicochemical and bacterial community characteristics during the full-scale ATAD process operated for approximately 3 weeks in 2 different years. After initiating simultaneous aeration and mixing using an air-inducing circulator (aerator), the temperature autothermally increased rapidly in the first 1 to 2 days with exhaustive oxygen consumption, leading to a drastic decrease and gradual increase in oxidation-reduction potential in the first 2 days, reached >50°C in the middle 4 to 6 days, and remained steady in the final phase. Volatile fatty acids were rapidly consumed and diminished in the first 2 days, whereas the ammonia nitrogen concentration was relatively stable during the process, despite a gradual pH increase to 9.3. Principal-coordinate analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicons using next-generation sequencing divided the bacterial community structures into distinct clusters corresponding to three phases, and they were similar in the final phase in both years despite different transitions in the middle phase. The predominant phyla (closest species, dominancy) in the initial, middle, and final phases were Proteobacteria (Arcobacter trophiarum, 19 to 43%; Acinetobacter towneri, 6.3 to 30%), Bacteroidetes (Moheibacter sediminis, 43 to 54%), and Firmicutes (Thermaerobacter composti, 11 to 28%; Heliorestis baculata, 2.1 to 16%), respectively. Two predominant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the final phase showed very low similarities to the closest species, indicating that the process is unique compared with previously published ones. This unique process with three distinctive phases would be caused by the aerator with complete aeration.IMPORTANCE Although the autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) process has several advantages, such as a high degradation capacity, a short treatment period, and inactivation of pathogens, one of the factors limiting its broad application is the high electric power consumption for aerators with a full-scale bioreactor. We elucidated the dynamics of the bacterial community structures, as well as the physicochemical characteristics, in the ATAD process with a full-scale bioreactor from human excreta for 3 weeks. Our results indicated that this unique process can be divided into three distinguishable phases by an aerator with complete aeration and showed a possibility of shortening the digestion period to approximately 10 days. This research not only helps to identify which bacteria play significant roles and how the process can be improved and controlled but also demonstrates an efficient ATAD process with less electric power consumption for worldwide application.

Abstract
Food waste recycling via fungal hydrolysis and lactic acid (LA) fermentation has been investigated. Hydrolysates derived from mixed food waste and bakery waste were rich in glucose (80.0-100.2gL(-1)), fructose (7.6gL(-1)) and free amino nitrogen (947-1081mgL(-1)). In the fermentation with Lactobacillus casei Shirota, 94.0gL(-1) and 82.6gL(-1) of LA were produced with productivity of 2.61gL(-1)h(-1) and 2.50gL(-1)h(-1) for mixed food waste and bakery waste hydrolysate, respectively. The yield was 0.94gg(-1) for both hydrolysates. Similar results were obtained using food waste powder hydrolysate, in which 90.1gL(-1) of LA was produced with a yield and productivity of 0.92gg(-1) and 2.50gL(-1)h(-1). The results demonstrate the feasibility of an efficient bioconversion of food waste to LA and a decentralized approach of food waste recycling in urban area.

Abstract
Uninvestigated control factors of meta-fermentation, the fermentative production of pure chemicals and fuels in a mixed culture system, were examined for production of optically pure l-lactic acid (LA) from food waste. In meta-fermentations by pH swing control, l-LA production with 100% optical purity (OPl-LA) was achieved even using unsterilized model kitchen refuse medium with preferential proliferation of l-LA-producing Bacillus coagulans, a minor member in the seed, whereas agitation decreased OPl-LA drastically. pH constant control shortened the fermentation time but decreased OPl-LA and LA selectivity (SLA) by stimulating growth of heterofermentative Bacillus thermoamylovorans. Deliberately switching from pH swing control to constant control exhibited the best performance for l-LA production: maximum accumulation, 39.2gL(-1); OPl-LA, 100%; SLA, 96.6%; productivity, 1.09gL(-1)h(-1). These results present a novel pH control strategy for efficient l-LA production in meta-fermentation based on a concept different from that of pure culture systems.

Abstract
Elucidation of functions of bacteria in a mixed culture system (MCS) such as composting, activated sludge system is difficult, since the system is complicating with many unisolated bacteria. Here, we developed a systematic feedback isolation strategy for the isolation and rapid screening of multiple targeted strains from MCS. Six major strains (Corynebacterium sphenisci, Bacillus thermocloacae, Bacillus thermoamylovorans, Bacillus smithii, Bacillus humi, and Bacillus coagulans), which are detected by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis in our previous study on MCS for l-lactic acid production, were targeted for isolation. Based on information of suitable cultivation conditions (e.g., media, pH, temperature) from the literature, feedback isolation was performed to form 136 colonies. The following direct colony matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was optimised as the second screening to narrow down 20 candidate colonies from similar spectra patterns with six closest type strains. This step could distinguish bacteria at the species level with distance similarity scores ≥0.55 corresponding to 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity ≥98.2%, suggesting that this is an effective technique to minimize isolates close to targeted type strains. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that two targeted strains and one strain related to the target had successfully been isolated, showing high similarities (99.5-100%) with the sequences from the DGGE bands, and that the other candidates were affiliated with three strains that were closely related to the target species. This study proposes a new method for systematic feedback isolation that may be useful for isolating targeted strains from MCS for further investigation.

Abstract
Members of the genus Bacillus are considered to be both, among the best studied and most commonly used bacteria as well as the most still unexplored and the most wide-applicable potent bacteria because novel Bacillus strains are continuously being isolated and used in various areas. Production of optically pure l-lactic acid (l-LA), a feedstock for bioplastic synthesis, from renewable resources has recently attracted attention as a valuable application of Bacillus strains. l-LA fermentation by other producers, including lactic acid bacteria and Rhizopus strains (fungi) has already been addressed in several reviews. However, despite the advantages of l-LA fermentation by Bacillus strains, including its high growth rate, utilization of various carbon sources, tolerance to high temperature, and growth in simple nutritional conditions, it has not been reviewed. This review article discusses new findings on LA-producing Bacillus strains and compares them to other producers. The future prospects for LA-producing Bacillus strains are also discussed.

Abstract
The aim of present study was to develop a process for open ethanol fermentation from food waste using an acid-tolerant mutant of Zymomonas mobilis (ZMA7-2). The mutant showed strong tolerance to acid condition of food waste hydrolysate and high ethanol production performance. By optimizing fermentation parameters, ethanol fermentation with initial glucose concentration of 200 g/L, pH value around 4.0, inoculum size of 10% and without nutrient addition was considered as best conditions. Moreover, the potential of bench scales fermentation and cell reusability was also examined. The fermentation in bench scales (44 h) was faster than flask scale (48 h), and the maximum ethanol concentration and ethanol yield (99.78 g/L, 0.50 g/g) higher than that of flask scale (98.31 g/L, 0.49 g/g). In addition, the stable cell growth and ethanol production profile in five cycles successive fermentation was observed, indicating the mutant was suitable for industrial ethanol production.

Abstract
A unique method to produce highly optically-active l-lactic acid and soil amendments that promote plant growth from food waste was proposed. Three Bacillus strains Bacillus subtilis KBKU21, B. subtilis N3-9 and Bacillus coagulans T27, were used. Strain KBKU21 accumulated 36.9 g/L l-lactic acid with 95.7% optical activity and 98.2% l-lactic acid selectivity when fermented at 43°C for 84 h in a model kitchen refuse (MKR) medium. Residual precipitate fraction (anaerobically-fermented MKR (AFM) compost) analysis revealed 4.60%, 0.70% and 0.75% of nitrogen (as N), phosphorous (as P2O5), and potassium (as K2O), respectively. Additionally, the carbon to nitrogen ratio decreased from 13.3 to 10.6. AFM compost with KBKU21 promoted plant growth parameters, including leaf length, plant height and fresh weight of Brassica rapa (Komatsuna), than that by chemical fertilizers or commercial compost. The concept provides an incentive for the complete recycling of food waste, contributing towards a sustainable production system.

Abstract
In this study, an advanced biorefinery technology that uses mixed bakery waste has been developed to produce l-lactic acid using an adaptively evolved Thermoanaerobacterium aotearoense LA1002-G40 in a non-sterilized system. Under these conditions, mixed bakery waste was directly hydrolysed by Aspergillus awamori and Aspergillus oryzae, resulting in a nutrient-rich hydrolysate containing 83.6g/L glucose, 9.5 g/L fructose and 612 mg/L free amino nitrogen. T. aotearoense LA1002-G40 was evaluated and then adaptively evolved to grow in this nutrient-rich hydrolysate. Using a 5-L fermenter, the overall lactic acid production from mixed bakery waste was 0.18 g/g with a titer, productivity and yield of 78.5 g/L, 1.63 g/L/h and 0.85 g/g, respectively. This is an innovative procedure involving a complete bioconversion process for l-lactic acid produced from mixed bakery waste under non-sterilized conditions. The proposed process could be potentially applied to turn food waste into l-lactic acid in an economically feasible way.

Abstract
Converting waste to resource may mitigate environmental pollution and global resource limitation. The platform chemical lactic acid can be produced from biowaste and its liquid fraction after solid-liquid separation. A fermentation step for lactic acid production prior to the conversion of biowaste to methane and organic fertilizer would increase the biowaste's value. Despite the huge potential and promising results of the treatment procedure, the reasons for efficiency loss observed previously need to be addressed in order to pave the way for an up-scaling of the fermentation process. Therefore, biowaste was fermented applying pH control, acid extraction and glucose addition in order to counteract reasons such as acidification, end-product inhibition and carbon limitation, respectively. The fermentation was competitive compared to other renewable lactic acid production substrates and reached a maximum productivity of >5 g Clactic acidg(-1)Ch(-1) and a concentration exceeding 30 g L(-1). A combination of acidification and end-product inhibition was identified as major obstacle. Lactobacillus crispatus and its closest relatives were identified as key lactic acid producers within the process using Miseq Illumina sequencing.

Abstract
This feasibility study investigated a two-step biorefining approach to increase the value gained by recycling of organic municipal solid waste. Firstly, lactic acid was produced via batch fermentation at 37°C using the indigenous microbiome. Experiments revealed an optimal fermentation period of 24h resulting in high yields of lactic acid (up to 37gkg(-1)). The lactic acid proportion of total volatile fatty acid content reached up to 83%. Lactobacilli were selectively enriched to up to 75% of the bacterial community. Additionally conversion of organic matter to lactic acid was increased from 22% to 30% through counteracting end product inhibition by continuous lactic acid extraction. Secondly, fermentation residues were used as co-substrate in biomethane production yielding up to 618±41Nmlbiomethaneg(-1) volatile solids. Digestate, the only end product of this process can be used as organic fertilizer.

Abstract
In order to investigate the feasibility of producing lactic acid from municipal organic solid waste different pH values (4-7) and temperatures (37°C and 55°C) were tested. For the evaluation of fermentation conditions the chemical, physical, and microbial characters were monitored over a period of 7days. Quantitative real time PCR, PCR-DGGE, and next generation sequencing of a 16S rRNA gene library were applied to identify the key players of the lactic acid production and their association. Lactobacillus acidophilus and its closest relatives were found to be efficient lactic acid producers (>300mM) under most suitable fermentation conditions tested in this study: 37°C with either uncontrolled pH or at a pH of 5. These data provide the first step in the realization of the idea "reuse, reduce, and recycle" of municipal organic solid waste.

Abstract
A newly isolated Bacillus sp. MC-07 showed 99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the Bacillus thermoamylovorans LMG 18084(T). It demonstrated optimum and maximum growth temperatures of 50 and 62 °C, respectively. The ability of MC-07 to produce optically pure L-lactic acid via direct fermentation of starch without enzymatic hydrolysis was investigated at different pH values (6.0-8.0) by intermittent adjustments every 12 h. During batch fermentation in mineral salt medium containing 0.001 % yeast extract at pH 7.0, 20 g/L of soluble starch was utilized to produce 16.6 g/L L-lactic acid at 50 °C within 24 h of fermentation, with 100 % optical purity, 92.1 % lactic acid selectivity, and an L-lactic acid yield of 0.977 g/g. Direct starch fermentation at pHs 6.0, 6.5, 7.5, and 8.0 resulted in considerably lower concentrations of lactic acid than did at pH 7.0. Compared with B. thermoamylovorans LMG 18084(T), the ability of strain MC-07 to produce L-lactic acid was superior.

Abstract
A novel Gram-staining-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, thermotolerant bacterium, designated strain MO-04T, was isolated from a marine animal resources (MAR) compost. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain MO-04T showed 99.4 % similarity with
Bacillus thermolactis
R-6488T, 94.1 % similarity with
Bacillus thermoamylovorans
CNCM I-1378T, 93.3 % similarity with
Bacillus humi
LMG 22167T, 93.2 % similarity with
Bacillus niacini
IFO 15566T and the similarities with other species were less than 93 %. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain MO-04T and
B. thermolactis
DSM 23332T was 45 %. The DNA G+C content of strain MO-04T was 33.4 mol%, comparatively lower than that of
B. thermolactis
R-6488T (35.0 mol%). Strain MO-04T grew at 35–61 °C (optimum 50 °C), pH 4.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.2) and tolerated up to 8.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2 %). The MO-04T cell wall peptidoglycan type was meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, and the major fatty acids were C16 : 1, C14 : 1, C17 : 0 and C17 : 1. The major polar lipids were represented by diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. The analysed polyphasic data presented here clearly indicate that the isolate MO-04T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus
Bacillus
for which the name Bacillus kokeshiiformis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of B. kokeshiiformis is MO-04T ( = JCM 19325T = KCTC 33163T).
