Removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution by lipopeptides and lipopeptides modified Na-montmorillonite

Preparation and characterization of nanomuscovite by intercalation method for adsorption of heavy metals from polluted water

In this study, nanomuscovite adsorbents were prepared by intercalation with various organic intercalates (DTAB-TTAB-DTPA-PA-PN) and used to remove Cd2+ and Pb2+ from polluted water. The best nanomuscovite was prepared using DTPA and muscovite (Muc/DTPA) and characterized by XRD, TEM, EDX, FTIR, and BET surface area. The developed nanoadsorbent was used to remove Cd2+ and Pb2+ from polluted water. The effect of various factors, including contact time, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, and temperature, was investigated. The results reveal that the maximum adsorption of Cd2+ and Pb2+ was 91.5% and 97%, respectively, at the initial metal concentration 50 ppm, adsorbent dosage 0.2 g, contact time 60 min, solution temperature 25 °C, and pH 6 for Pb2+ and pH 7 for Cd2+. Adsorption isotherm models (Freundlich, Langmuir, Dubunin-Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherm models) as well as kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intra-particle diffusion models) were employed to evaluate the experimental results. The adsorption of Cd2+ and Pb2+ on Muc/DTPA fitted well within the Langmuir isotherm model and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Thermodynamics parameters of metal adsorption indicated exothermic and spontaneous processes. Results were applied to the real wastewater that showed high Cd2+ and Pb2+ removal.

Treatment of heavy metals contaminated water: use of B. mojavensis BI2 derived lipopeptide and palm waste flour

In the present work, we demonstrated the potential use of newly identified lipopeptides produced by B. mojavensis BI2 along with palm waste flour for the bioremediation of heavy metals contaminated water. The enhancement of radish seeds germination was used to evaluate the treatment efficiency. Firstly, better enhancement in the order of 3.8, 2.52, 1.5 and 5 were recorded respectively for 200 mg/L copper, lead, cobalt and mercury with respective lipopeptide quantities of the order of 200, 300, 200 and 400 mg/L. When studying the sequestration of increasing heavy metals concentration, BI2 lipopeptide was effective. Secondly, a mixed bioprocess was evaluated using palm waste flour as heavy metals sequester and BI2 lipopeptides as improver. Optimal biosorption of lead, copper, cobalt and mercury were obtained with 10 g/l waste, 1,000 mg/l metal and 200 mg/l BI2 lipopeptide for 1 hour. The addition of 200 mg/l BI2 lipopeptide improves the efficiency of the treatment significantly.

A critical review on the environmental application of lipopeptide micelles

The importance of lipopeptide micelles in environmental applications has been highlighted. These vessels exhibit various sizes, shapes, and surface properties under different environmental conditions. An in-depth understanding of the tunable assembling behavior of biosurfactant micelles is of great importance for their applications. However, a systematic review of such behaviors with assorted micro/nano micellar structures under given environmental conditions, particularly under low temperature and high salinity, remains untapped. Such impacts on their environmental applications have yet to be summarized. This review tried to fill the knowledge gaps by providing a comprehensive summary of the recent knowledge advancement in genetically regulated lipopeptides production, micelles associated decontamination mechanisms in low temperature and high salinity environments, and up-to-date environmental applications. This work is expected to deliver valuable insights to guide lipopeptide design and discovery. The mechanisms concluded in this study could inspire the forthcoming research efforts in the advanced environmental application of lipopeptide micelles.

Synergetic Effect of Organic Flocculant and Montmorillonite Clay on the Removal of Nano-CuO by Coagulation-Flocculation-Sedimentation Process

The widespread usage of nano-copper oxide particles (nano-CuO) in several industrial products and applications raises concerns about their release into water bodies. Thus, their elimination from drinking water is essential to reduce the risk to human health. This work investigated the removal of nano-CuO from pure water and montmorillonite clay (MC) suspensions using poly aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC) as well as cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) by the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (C/F/S) process. Moreover, the PAFC and PAFC/PAM flocculation performance for various nano-CuO particles concentrations, dosages, pH, settling times and stirring speeds were also investigated. The findings showed that the removal of nano-CuO and turbidity in MC suspension were higher as compared to pure water. Moreover, the combined effect of PAFC/PAM on the elimination of nano-CuO and turbidity was also substantially better than the individual use of PAFC or PAM. The efficient removal of CuO was observed in the solution containing higher mass concentration in the order (10 mg/L > 2.5 mg/L > 1 mg/L) with an increased coagulant dose. The improved removal performance of nano-CuO was observed in a pH range of 7-11 under various water matrices. The C/F/S conditions of nano-CuO were further optimized by the Box-Behnken statistical experiment design and response surface methodology. The PAFC/PAM dose resulted in the maximum removal of nano-CuO (10 mg/L) in both pure water (>97%) and MC suspension (>99%). The results of particle monitoring and Fourier transform infrared of composite flocs revealed that the main removal mechanism of nano-CuO may be the combined effect of neutralization, complexation as well as adsorption.

Effect of alkaline lignin on immobilization of cadmium and lead in soils and the associated mechanisms

Lignin is a low-cost and environmental-friendly material and could increase the solubility of phosphorus (P) in soils. Meanwhile, application of P compounds to soils decreases the bioavailability of heavy metals. However, there are few reports on whether lignin-induced P release immobilizes heavy metals in soil. This study investigated this possibility by adding alkaline lignin to forest, paddy and upland soils differing in pH and available P. The amendment of alkaline lignin increased soil P availability and enhanced the adsorption and decreased the desorption percentages of Cd in acid forest and paddy soils. The P released from the soil could immobilize Pb and Cd but the presence of Pb decreased the adsorption capacity of Cd on the acid soils. In comparison, the alkaline lignin decreased Cd adsorption and raised Cd desorption in the alkaline upland soil, due to the formation of soluble complex of hydrophilic organic matter with Cd. In addition, precipitation, complexion, and competition effect among Cd, P and lignin in different soils led to various P concentrations in the experiment. The study suggests that alkaline lignin was effective in Cd/Pb immobilization partly via enhanced P availability in acid soils, but was ineffective in Cd immobilization in alkaline soils.

Chitosan/activated coal composite as an effective adsorbent for Mn(VII): Modeling and interpretation of physicochemical parameters

Chitosan was impregnated into porous activated coal to produce a multifunctional chitosan/activated coal (Cs/Ac) composite. The resulted Cs/Ac was characterized and utilized as a cost-effective adsorbent for Mn(VII) at altered temperatures (i.e., 25, 35, and 45 °C). The adsorption results were fitted to classical as well as advanced statistical physics models. The Freundlich equation described well the achieved experimental data at all temperatures. Enhancing the Langmuir adsorption capacity from 203.26 to 224.03 mg/g with temperature indicated that Mn(VII) adsorption was an endothermic process. Steric, energetic and thermodynamics data of the double layer model with two energy sites (i.e., the best fit statistical model) were completely interpreted. The number of Mn(VII) per adsorption site (n) was between 0.76 and 0.92 suggested the presence of multi-docking and multi-interactions mechanisms. The active sites density (N_M) of the Cs/Ac decreased with improving temperature. Energetically, Mn(VII) uptake by Cs/Ac was governed by physical interactions (i.e., adsorption energy <40 kJ/mol). Macroscopically, the interaction between Mn(VII) and Cs/Ac was spontaneous. Overall, modification of the Ac by the used marine biomass (Cs) produced a promising Mn(VII) adsorbent and also, the application of physical analysis offered a deep interpretation for the adsorption mechanism.

The ecological roles of microbial lipopeptides: Where are we going?

Lipopeptides (LPs) are secondary metabolites produced by a diversity of bacteria and fungi. Their unique chemical structure comprises both a peptide and a lipid moiety. LPs are of major biotechnological interest owing to their emulsification, antitumor, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial activities. To date, these versatile compounds have been applied across multiple industries, from pharmaceuticals through to food processing, cosmetics, agriculture, heavy metal, and hydrocarbon bioremediation. The variety of LP structures and the diversity of the environments from which LP-producing microorganisms have been isolated suggest important functions in their natural environment. However, our understanding of the ecological role of LPs is limited. In this review, the mode of action and the role of LPs in motility, antimicrobial activity, heavy metals removal and biofilm formation are addressed. We include discussion on the need to characterise LPs from a diversity of microorganisms, with a focus on taxa inhabiting 'extreme' environments. We introduce the use of computational target fishing and molecular dynamics simulations as powerful tools to investigate the process of interaction between LPs and cell membranes. Together, these advances will provide new understanding of the mechanism of action of novel LPs, providing greater insights into the roles of LPs in the natural environment.

Revealing the Efficacy of Thermostable Biosurfactant in Heavy Metal Bioremediation and Surface Treatment in Vegetables

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules which showed application in the food, medical, and cosmetics industries and in bioremediation. In this study, a marine sponge-associated bacteria (MSI 54) was identified as a biosurfactant producer which showed high emulsification and surface tension-reducing property. The isolate MSI 54 was identified as Bacillus sp. and the biosurfactant was chemically characterized as a lipopeptide analog based on the spectral data including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The MSI 54 lipopeptide biosurfactant was an anionic molecule which showed high affinity toward cationic heavy metals including Pb, Hg, Mn, and Cd. The heavy metal bioremediation efficacy of the biosurfactant was evaluated using atomic absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis. When MSI 54 lipopeptide biosurfactant was added to heavy metals, this resulted in a white co-precipitate of the metal–biosurfactant complex. The heavy metal remediation efficacy of the biosurfactant at a 2.0 × critical micelle concentration (CMC) showed removal of 75.5% Hg, 97.73% Pb, 89.5% Mn, and 99.93% Cd, respectively, in 1,000 ppm of the respective metal solution. The surface treatment of farm fresh cabbage, carrot, and lettuce with 2.0 × CMC of the lipopeptide showed effective removal of the surface heavy metal contaminants.

Systematic Investigation of the Synergistic and Antagonistic Effects on the Removal of Pyrene and Copper onto Mesoporous Silica from Aqueous Solutions

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals have attracted greater attention due to their single or complex risks. It is urgent to find useful methods to remove these two pollutants together. In this study, SBA15 and MCM-41 were selected and used for the simultaneous removal of pyrene and copper from aqueous solution. Batch experiments were conducted systematically by investigating the adsorption behavior and effects including kinetics, isotherms, ionic strength and pH effects. Experimental results showed that the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model fitted the adsorption behavior better. The solution pH values and ionic strength affected the adsorption behavior greatly. Furthermore, the synergistic or antagonistic effects could be observed on the adsorption of pyrene and copper onto MCM-41 and SBA15, respectively. The synergistic and antagonistic effects of pyrene and copper onto mesoporous silica may be attributed to the size of pyrene⁻copper complex and the average pore size of adsorbents. With the higher pore size, the complex would be adsorbed onto the inner surface of MCM-41 which showed synergistic effect on the adsorption of pyrene and copper. This study shows new guidelines and insight into the study of adsorption behavior of PAHs and heavy metals from aquatic environments.

Combination of bioleaching by gross bacterial biosurfactants and flocculation: A potential remediation for the heavy metal contaminated soils

Combining bioleaching by the gross biosurfactants of Burkholderia sp. Z-90 and flocculation by poly aluminium chloride (PAC) was proposed to develop a potential environment-friendly and cost-effective technique to remediate the severely contaminated soils by heavy metals. The factors affecting soil bioleaching by the gross biosurfactants of Burkholderia sp. Z-90 were optimized. The results showed the optimal removing efficiencies of Zn, Pb, Mn, Cd, Cu, and As by the Burkholderia sp. Z-90 leachate were 44.0, 32.5, 52.2, 37.7, 24.1 and 31.6%, respectively at soil liquid ratio of 1:20 (w/v) for 5 d, which were more efficient than that by 0.1% of rhamnolipid. The amounts of the bioleached heavy metals by the Burkholderia sp. Z-90 leachate were higher than that by other biosurfactants in the previous studies, although the removal efficiencies of the metals by the leachate were relatively lower. It was suggested that more heavy metals caused more competitive to chelate with function groups of the gross biosurfactants and the metal removal efficiencies by biosurfactants in natural soils were lower than in the artificially contaminated soils. Moreover, the Burkholderia sp. Z-90 leachate facilitated the metals to be transformed to the easily migrating speciation fractions. Additional, the results showed that PAC was efficient in the following flocculation to remove heavy metals in the waste bio-leachates. Our study will provide support for developing a bioleaching technique model to remediate the soils extremely contaminated by heavy metals.

Effect of nanohydroxyapatite on cadmium leaching and environmental risks under simulated acid rain

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil is a global environmental pollution issue. Nanohydroxyapatite (NHAP) has been used in soil remediation to immobilize cadmium in contaminated soils. However, the effect of acid rain on the export of cadmium from topsoil and its behavior in deep soil and leachate is unclear. In this study, column experiments and development of parsimonious model were performed to estimate Cd leaching behavior from topsoil and environmental risk of groundwater after 0.5% NHAP remediation. Four leaching events were performed and total Cd, different fractions of Cd determined by sequential extraction procedure and pH were determined for each leaching. The results show that with the export of Cd in topsoil, the total Cd concentration in soil at different depths had the following vertical distributions: 0-5 cm > 5-10 cm > 10-15 cm > 15-20 cm. NHAP treatment increased the soil pH and decreased Cd leaching loss by 56.45% compared to the control, and the results fit the parabolic diffusion model. With sequential extraction it was observed that NHAP application increased the residual fraction of cadmium in soil. After leaching, there was a positive correlation between soil pH and Cd concentration with regards to the exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable and residual Cd fractions. The parabolic diffusion model showed that Cd-contaminated soil with NHAP remediation is harmless to humans after sufficient remediation duration, whereas the resultant concentrations from the CK treatment could be toxic. The results indicate that nanohydroxyapatite could significantly reduce the bioavailability of cadmium and the environmental risk. However, the release of Ca and P from the dissolution of NHAP should be carefully studied as this will impact the mobilization of Cd or colloid Cd, and high leaching of P may result in P-induced eutrophication risk.

Effects of sludge thermal-alkaline pretreatment on cationic red X-GRL adsorption onto pyrolysis biochar of sewage sludge

Thermal-alkaline pretreatment has traditionally been used to enhance anaerobic sludge digestion. In this study, after removing the supernatant, which could be used in anaerobic digestion, the Residual Solids of Thermal-Alkaline pretreated sewage Sludge (RSTAS) were used to prepare biochar via pyrolysis, which could then adsorb Cationic Red X-GRL(X-GRL). The experimental results showed that the RSTAS-biochar had a higher BET surface area and total pore volume than the biochar prepared from raw sludge (RS) (43.5% and 33.3%, respectively). The pretreatment enhanced the X-GRL adsorption capacity of the biochar by 1.5-49.2% at dosages between 12.5-100.0g/g, and the highest adsorption capacity increased from 39.1mg/g to 47.6mg/g. The biochar from RSTAS had a wider application pH range for X-GRL adsorption. The kinetics and isotherms for X-GRL adsorption onto the two biochars were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively, which suggested that thermal-alkaline pretreatment had little effect on the adsorption mechanisms of X-GRL onto biochar.

Preparation of ferric-activated sludge-based adsorbent from biological sludge for tetracycline removal

Ferric activation was novelly used to produce sludge-based adsorbent (SBA) from biological sludge through pyrolysis, and the adsorbents were applied to remove tetracycline from aqueous solution. The pyrolysis temperature and mass ratio (activator/dried sludge) greatly influenced the surface area and pore characteristics of SBA. Ferric activation could promote the porous structure development of adsorbents, and the optimum preparation conditions were pyrolysis temperature 750°C and mass ratio (activator/dried sludge) 0.5. In batch experiments, ferric-activated SBA showed a higher adsorption capacity for tetracycline than non-activated SBA, because the enhanced mesoporous structure favored the diffusion of tetracycline into the pores, the iron oxides and oxygen-containing functional groups in the adsorbents captured tetracycline by surface complexation. The results indicate that ferric activation is an effective approach for preparing adsorbents from biological sludge to remove tetracycline, providing a potential option for waste resource recovery.

Screening concepts, characterization and structural analysis of microbial-derived bioactive lipopeptides: a review

Lipopeptide biosurfactants are surface active biomolecules that are produced by a variety of microorganisms. Microbial lipopeptides have gained the interest of microbiologists, chemists and biochemists for their high biodiversity as well as efficient action, low toxicity and good biodegradability in comparison to synthetic counterparts. In this report, we review methods for the production, isolation and screening, purification and structural characterization of microbial lipopeptides. Several techniques are currently available for each step, and we describe the most commonly utilized and recently developed techniques in this review. Investigations on lipopeptide biosurfactants in natural products require efficient isolation techniques for the characterization and evaluation of chemical and biological properties. A combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques offer opportunities for a better characterization of lipopeptide structures, which in turn can lead to the application of lipopeptides in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, agricultural and bioremediation industries.

Adsorptive recovery of palladium(ii) from aqueous solution onto cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite membrane

A cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite (CCTS-M) membrane was prepared successfully with a glutaraldehyde cross-linker, and then was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDX, TG/DTG and XPS.
