Thermodynamic parameters for adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals and dyes from wastewaters

Starch-based self-assembled three-dimensional network nanostructure materials for sustainable cascade adsorption

Toward the development of a sustainable utilization strategy for adsorption materials, a starch-based adsorbent starch-chitosan-tannic acid (St-CTS-TA) with a three-dimensional (3D) structure was fabricated in water via electrostatic and hydrogen bonding reactions between St, CTS, and TA without using toxic reducing agents or special instruments. St-CTS-TA demonstrated a high specific surface area of 37 m2/g as well as a mesoporous/macroporous distribution ranging from 30 to 80 nm, which enhanced the mass transfer of adsorbate and the exposure of catechol groups in TA. The Langmuir isotherm adsorption model revealed that the highest adsorption capacities of St-CTS-TA for Fe3+ and Co2+ were 1678.2 and 944.8 mg/g, respectively. Surprisingly, the specific surface area of St-CTS-TA increased from 37 to 87 and 42 m2/g after Fe3+ and Co2+ adsorption, respectively, and the resulting St-CTS-TA-Fe and St-CTS-TA-Co could continuously adsorb basic fuchsin (BF) and rhodamine B (RhB). The adsorption capacities of St-CTS-TA-Fe and St-CTS-TA-Co for BF/RhB were found to be 1854.79/401.19 mg/g and 2229.77/537.49 mg/g, respectively, based on the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model.

Biofilm hydrogel derived from physical crosslinking (self-assembly) of xanthan gum and chitosan for removing Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ from aqueous solution

This study aimed to fabricate a series of biodegradable hydrogel films by gelating/physically crosslinking a blend of xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) in various combinations using a facile, green, and low cost solution casting technique. The adsorption of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ by the XG/CS biofilm in aqueous solution was studied in batch experiments to determine how the pH of the solution, contact time, dosage of adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration and ionic strength affect its adsorption. A highly pH-dependent adsorption process was observed for three metal ions. A maximum amount of Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions was adsorbable with 50 mg of the adsorbent at pH 6.0 for an initial metal concentration of 50 mg.L-1. An empirical pseudo-second-order model seems to fit the kinetic experimental data reasonably well. It was found that the Langmuir model correlated better with equilibrium isotherm when compared with the Freundlich model. For Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions at 25 °C, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 152.33, 144.79, and 139.71 mg.g-1, respectively. Furthermore, the biofilm was capable of regenerating, allowing metal ions to adsorb and desorb for five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the developed biodegradable film offers the potential for remediation of specified metal ions.

Polymeric Networks Derived from UV-Curing of Bio-Based Polyesters for Methyl Violet Removal

In this study, firstly, the syntheses and characterizations of biobased polyesters with different acid values obtained from the condensation reaction of biobased itaconic acid and polyethylene glycol were investigated. Then, UV curing was applied to form polymeric networks as adsorbent material from these polyesters containing different acids. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for the characterization of polymeric networks. The effects of the parameters of contact time, initial dye concentration, pH, temperature, amount of adsorbent on adsorption were investigated by batch method. In addition, adsorption equilibrium data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Elovich, Redlich-Peterson, Harkin-Jura and Jossens adsorption models. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed at 298, 308, 318 and 328 K and desorption studies were also examined. Comparison studies for the effects of the acid values of the adsorbent materials on the removal of methyl violet (MV) organic pollutant from aqueous solutions were analyzed. According to the pseudo-second-order model, the adsorption capacities were found to be ≥ 357.14 mg/g for the adsorbents. From the thermodynamic data, it was determined that the mechanism was exothermic and spontaneous. As a result of the third reuse, it was found that the adsorbents had a removal efficiency of ≥ 72.36%. According to the results observed the increase in the acidities in the chemical structure of bio-based polymeric networks enhances the adsoption properties.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. Evolution of a Sleeping Beauty: The Freundlich Isotherm

The name of Herbert Freundlich is commonly associated with a power relationship for adsorbed amount of a substance (C_ads) against the concentration in solution (C_sln), such that C_ads = KC_slnⁿ; this isotherm (together with the Langmuir isotherm) is considered to be the model of choice for correlating the experimental adsorption data of micropollutants or contaminants of emerging concern (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products), but it also concerns the adsorption of gases on solids. However, Freundlich's 1907 paper was a "sleeping beauty", which only started to attract significant citations from the early 2000s onward; moreover, these citations were too often wrong. In this paper, the main steps in the historical developments of Freundlich isotherm are identified, along with a discussion of several theoretical points: (1) derivation of the Freundlich isotherm from an exponential distribution of energies, leading to a more general equation, based on the Gauss hypergeometric function, of which the power Freundlich equation is an approximation; (2) application of this hypergeometric isotherm to the case of competitive adsorption, when the binding energies are perfectly correlated; and (3) new equations for estimating the Freundlich coefficient K_F from physicochemical properties such as the sticking surface or probability. From new data treatment of two examples from the literature, the influence of several parameters is highlighted, and the application of linear free-energy relationships (LFER) to the Freundlich parameters for different series of compounds is evoked, along with its limitations. We also suggest some ideas that may be worth exploring in the future, such as extending the range of applications of the Freundlich isotherm by means of its hypergeometric version, extending the competitive adsorption isotherm in the case of partial correlation, and exploring the interest of the sticking surfaces or probabilities instead of K_F for LFER analysis.

High thiabendazole fungicide uptake using Cellana tramoserica shells modified by copper: characterization, adsorption mechanism, and optimization using CCD-RSM approach

In this paper, Cellana tramoserica (CT) shells were modified by copper and used as an adsorbent to remove thiabendazole (TBZ) from aqueous media. The removal efficiency of TBZ onto CT shells and modified Cellana tramoserica (CT-Cu) shells was investigated by considering the following parameters: initial pesticide concentration, solution pH, agitation time, temperature, and adsorbent mass. The experimental results show that the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models well describe the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption amount for CT and CT-Cu is 319.68 mg/g and 376.12 mg/g, respectively. CT-Cu showed higher TBZ removal efficiency than CT, explained by the ligand exchange between the water and the pesticide molecules in the metal coordination sphere. Response surface methodology combined with central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used to optimize the adsorption conditions. Optimized values were obtained at 5 for pH, 50 ppm, 120 min, and 20 mg of CT-Cu adsorbent. Under these optimal conditions, 91% of TBZ was removed by adsorption onto CT-Cu. Graphical abstract.

Vanadium recovery by electrodialysis using polymer inclusion membranes

Industrial applications and environmental awareness recently prompted vanadium recovery spell from secondary resources. In this work, a polymer inclusion membrane containing trioctylmethylammonium chloride as carrier was successfully employed in electrodialysis for vanadium recovery from acidic sulfate solutions. The permeability coefficient of V(V) increased from 0.29 µm·s^-1 (without electric field) to 4.10 µm·s^-1 (with the 20 mA·cm^-2 current density)_. The transport performance of VO₂SO₄^-, which was the predominant species containing V(V) in the acidic region (pH <3), was influenced by the aqueous pH value and sulfate concentration. Under an electric field, a low concentrated H₂SO₄ solution (0.2 M) effectively stripped V(V) from the membranes, avoiding the requirement of a highly concentrated H₂SO₄ without electric field. Under the optimum conditions, the permeability coefficient and flux reached 6.80 µm·s^-1 and 13.34 µmol·m^-2·s^-1, respectively. High selectivity was observed for the separation of V(V) and Mo(VI) from mixed solutions of Co (II), Ni (II), Mn (II), and Al (III). Additionally, the separation between Mo(VI) and V(V) was further improved by adjusting the acidity of the stripping solution. The V(V) selectivity for the resulting membrane was higher than that of commercial anion exchange membranes.

Improper Estimation of Thermodynamic Parameters in Adsorption Studies with Distribution Coefficient KD (qe/Ce) or Freundlich Constant (KF): Considerations from the Derivation of Dimensionless Thermodynamic Equilibrium Constant and Suggestions

Adsorption processes often include three important components: kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics. In the study of solid–liquid adsorption, “standard” thermodynamic equilibrium constant $\left(K_{\text{Eq}}^{\text{o}}\right.$ ; dimensionless) plays an essential role in accurately calculating three thermodynamic parameters: the standard Gibbs energy change (∆G°; kJ/mol), the standard change in enthalpy (∆H°; kJ/mol), and the standard change in entropy [∆S°; J/(mol × K)] of an adsorption process. Misconception of the derivation of the $K_{\text{Eq}}^{\text{o}}$ constant that can cause calculative errors in values (magnitude and sign) of the thermodynamic parameters has been intensively reflected through certain kinds of papers (i.e., letters to editor, discussions, short communications, and correspondence like comment/rebuttal). The distribution coefficient (KD) and Freundlich constant (KF) have been intensively applied for calculating the thermodynamic parameters. However, a critical question is whether KD or KF is equal to $K_{\text{Eq}}^{\text{o}}$ . This paper gives (1) thorough discussion on the derivation of thermodynamic equilibrium constant of solid–liquid adsorption process, (2) reasonable explanation on the inconsistency of (direct and indirect) application of KD or KF for calculating the thermodynamic parameters based on the derivation of $K_{\text{Eq}}^{\text{o}}$ , and (3) helpful suggestions for improving the quality of papers published in this field.

A critical review on clay-based nanocomposite particles for application of wastewater treatment

Nanotechnology plays an important function in recent environmental aspects for the elimination of contaminants in the ecosystem. In recent times, nano-clay has initiated more concentration because of its distinctive physicochemical properties and characteristics. Recently, many types of research in clay-based nanocomposite were accomplished in the elimination of pollutants from water sources. Nanocomposite materials have advanced properties useful for contaminat removal such as higher surface area, thermal stability, selectivity to remove different contaminants, improved process ability, and fast decontamination. Thus, the development of clay-based composite materials is one of the upcoming directions to use effectively in water and wastewater treatment as adsorbent nanomaterials. This paper assesses the latest achievement in clay-based nanocomposite preparation, material property analysis and function for various pollutant removals. In particular, great consideration was paid to the recent progress in clay/metallic, clay-polymer, and clay-carbon composites presenting their application in the removal of different kinds of pollutants. Moreover, the mechanism of adsorption, the challenges and future perspective were also discussed to reach the optimum performance of the nanomaterials adsorbent. It is confirmed that clay-based nanocomposite materials are more cost-effective technology than conventional treatment methods.

Removal of Emerging Contaminants as Diclofenac and Caffeine Using Activated Carbon Obtained from Argan Fruit Shells

Activated carbons from argan nutshells were prepared by chemical activation using phosphoric acid H3PO4. This material was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectrometry, and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. The adsorption of two emerging compounds, a stimulant caffeine and an anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, from distilled water through batch and dynamic tests was investigated. Batch mode experiments were conducted to assess the capacity of adsorption of caffeine and diclofenac from an aqueous solution using the carbon above. Adsorption tests showed that the equilibrium time is 60 and 90 min for diclofenac and caffeine, respectively. The adsorption of diclofenac and caffeine on activated carbon from argan nutshells is described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The highest adsorption capacity determined by the mathematical model of Langmuir is about 126 mg/g for diclofenac and 210 mg/g for caffeine. The thermodynamic parameters attached to the studied absorbent/adsorbate system indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic for diclofenac and endothermic for caffeine.

Modification Strategies of Kapok Fiber Composites and Its Application in the Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions and Dyes from Aqueous Solutions: A Systematic Review

Kapok fiber (Ceiba pentandra) belongs to a group of natural fibers that are mainly composed of cellulose, lignin, pectin, and small traces of inorganic compounds. These fibers are lightweight with hollow tubular structure that is easy to process and abundant in nature. Currently, kapok fibers are used in industry as filling material for beddings, upholstery, soft toys, and nonwoven materials. However, kapok fiber has also a potential application in the adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions and dyes from aqueous systems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review about the recent developments on kapok fiber composites including its chemical properties, wettability, and surface morphology. Effective and innovative kapok fiber composites are analyzed with the help of characterization tools such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Different pre-treatment methods such as alkali and acid pre-treatment, oxidation pre-treatment, and Fenton reaction are discussed. These techniques are applied to enhance the hydrophilicity and to generate rougher fiber surfaces. Moreover, surface modification and synthesis of kapok fiber-based composites and its environmental applications are examined. There are various methods in the fabrication of kapok fiber composites that include chemical modification and polymerization. These procedures allow the kapok fiber composites to have higher adsorption capacities for selective heavy metal and dye removal.

Preparation, characterization and application of CS@PDA@Fe3O4 nanocomposite as a new magnetic nano-adsorber for the removal of metals and dyes in wastewater

This study aimed to develop a novel magnetic chitosan/dopamine/Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber (CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄) for the removal of heavy metal ions and organic dye molecules from aqueous solution. CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ was prepared by surface modification of PDA/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with chitosan using IPTES as the cross-linker. The surface structure, composition, and properties of the CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber were characterized by elemental (EDS), spectroscopic (XRD, XPS, and FT-IR), magnetic intensity (VSM), surface and morphological (TEM and SEM) analyses. In order to study its adsorption behavior, equilibrium and kinetics studies were carried out through batch experiments. Additionally, the influences of the pH value, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and contact time were also evaluated. The CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber exhibited high adsorption capacity especially for Cu(ii), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 419.6 mg g^-1. The experimental data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm kinetic models.

Application of adsorption process for effective removal of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater

Emerging pollutants in the marine ecosystem, as well as their possible impact on live species, have become a rising cause of worry. A traditional wastewater treatment plants alone are not successful in eliminating such massive contaminant groups and therefore additional water treatment is required which is to be cost effective. Since standard primary and secondary treatment plants are unsuccessful at eliminating or degrading these harmful chemicals, a cost-effective tertiary treatment approach is proposed. Adsorption is a successful approach for Contaminants removal globally, because it is low installation expense, high performance and has easy operational design. Emerging pollutants have been removed from wastewaters using various adsorbents like activated carbons, improved bio chars, Nano adsorbents, hybrid adsorbents, and others. The purpose of this paper is to review the source of contaminants and the concept of adsorption when separating emerging contaminants. The present study aims to examine the adsorption mechanism as an effective approach for treating emerging contaminants. Then, the analysis of natural and man-made adsorbents for the separation of contaminants is examined along with its comparison. Also, future view on emerging contaminants and adsorbents in modern generation has been discussed.

Clay-Polymer Nanocomposites: Preparations and Utilization for Pollutants Removal

Nowadays, people over the world face severe water scarcity despite the presence of several water sources. Adsorption is considered as the most efficient technique for the treatment of water containing biological, organic, and inorganic contaminants. For this purpose, materials from various origins (clay minerals, modified clays, zeolites, activated carbon, polymeric resins, etc.) have been considered as adsorbent for contaminants. Despite their cheapness and valuable properties, the use of clay minerals as adsorbent for wastewater treatment is limited due to many factors (low surface area, regeneration, and recovery limit, etc.). However, clay mineral can be used to enhance the performance of polymeric materials. The combination of clay minerals and polymers produces clay-polymers nanocomposites (CPNs) with advanced properties useful for pollutants removal. CPNs received a lot of attention for their efficient removal rate of various organic and inorganic contaminants via flocculation and adsorption ability. Three main classes of CPNs were developed (exfoliated nanocomposites (NCs), intercalated nanocomposites, and phase-separated microcomposites). The improved materials can be explored as novel and cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water/wastewater. The literature reported the ability of CPNs to remove various pollutants such as bacteria, metals, phenol, tannic acid, pesticides, dyes, etc. CPNs showed higher adsorption capacity and efficient water treatment compared to the individual components. Moreover, CPNs offered better regeneration than clay materials. The present paper summarizes the different types of clay-polymers nanocomposites and their effective removal of different contaminants from water. Based on various criteria, CPNs future as promising adsorbent for water treatment is discussed.

A systematic review on carbohydrate biopolymers for adsorptive remediation of copper ions from aqueous environments-Part B: Isotherms, thermokinetics and reusability

The presence of copper in aquatic environment is a serious threat for human health and ecosystem conservation. Adsorption is a powerful, operable and economic method for remediation of copper ions from aqueous phase. Carbohydrate biopolymers have emerged as promising, effective and environmental-friendly adsorbents for copper remediation. In part A of this review, different types of carbohydrate biopolymer adsorbents were surveyed focusing on prevalent and novel synthesis and modification methods. In current work (part B of the review), isothermal, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the copper adsorption by carbohydrate-based adsorbents as well as the regeneration and reusability of the biopolymer adsorbents are overviewed. Adsorption capacity, time required for equilibrium (adsorption rate), thermal-sensitivity of the adsorption, favorability extent, and sustainability of the adsorbents and adsorption processes are valuable and useful outcomes, resulted from the thermokinetic and reusability investigations. Such considerations are critical for the process design and scale up regarding technical, economical and sustainability of the adsorption process.

An ecofriendly nanocomposite of bacterial cellulose and hydroxyapatite efficiently removes lead from water

An environmentally friendly nanocomposite adsorbent composed of two renewable biomaterials, bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibrils and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocrystals, was synthetized by an in situ wet chemical precipitation technique, using clam shell biowaste as feedstock. HA nanocrystals embedded in an ultrafine BC network were confirmed and characterized trough different instrumental techniques (SEM, FTIR, XRD, EDS, surface charge and BET analysis), describing its nanostructure, chemical composition and thermal stability. The adsorptive removal of lead ions by the nanocomposite was investigated through batch experiments conducted under different pH, contact times and Pb(II) initial concentrations, proving that the process was highly favorable according to the Langmuir isotherm model (monolayer adsorption) with chemisorption as the main mechanism and kinetic data obeying a nonlinear pseudo-second order kinetic model. The developed nanocomposite showed a strong removal capacity of Pb(II) both in batch experiments (192 mg/g) and packed-bed column systems (188 mg/g), placing this new nanocomposite among top-performing BC-based biomaterials for lead removal.

Carbide Derived Carbon (CDC) as novel adsorbent for ibuprofen removal from synthetic water and treated sewage effluent

PURPOSE

Pharmaceuticals are becoming one of the largest environmental concerns when it comes to the water treatment industry. Increased usage of these chemicals poses a serious risk to ecology and human health due to their leakage into surface waters. In the present study, carbide derived carbon (CDC) was used for the first time as a new adsorbent to remove ibuprofen from synthetic water and wastewater effluent.

METHODS

The morphology, chemical composition, surface area and surface charge of the CDC particles were investigated using the transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, BET analysis and zeta potential measurements. The effects of CDC dosage, temperature, initial pH and agitation speed on the adsorption process were examined by using batch adsorption experiments. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms were investigated.

RESULTS

Adsorption and kinetic equilibrium data demonstrate that the adsorption of ibuprofen onto the CDC obeys the Langmuir isotherm model and the kinetics follow the pseudo-2nd order mechanism. The thermodynamic results reveal that ibuprofen adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. The ibuprofen removal by CDC was mainly controlled by the electrostatic forces at high pH of the feed solution and by the dispersive interactions in acidic media. The ibuprofen removal is promoted at high temperature, high agitation speed and low pH. The highest adsorption capacity of ibuprofen onto the CDC was 367 mg/g at pH 3. Furthermore, the CDC efficiently removed ibuprofen from spiked treated sewage effluent.

CONCLUSIONS

The obtained data indicate that the CDC provides a fast and efficient adsorptive removal of ibuprofen both from a model aqueous solution and treated sewage effluent.

Mechanistic insights into the enhanced removal of roxsarsone and its metabolites by a sludge-based, biochar supported zerovalent iron nanocomposite: Adsorption and redox transformation

Roxarsone is a phenyl-substituted arsonic acid comprising both arsenate and benzene rings. Few adsorbents are designed for the effective capture of both the organic and inorganic moieties of ROX molecules. Herein, nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles were incorporated on the surface of sludge-based biochar (SBC) to fabricate a dual-affinity sorbent that attracts both the arsenate and benzene rings of ROX. The incorporation of nZVI particles significantly increased the binding affinity and sorption capacity for ROX molecules compared to pristine SBC and pure nZVI. The enhanced elimination of ROX molecules was ascribed to synergetic adsorption and degradation reactions, through π-π* electron donor/acceptor interactions, H-bonding, and As-O-Fe coordination. Among these, the predominate adsorption force was As-O-Fe coordination. During the sorption process, some ROX molecules were decomposed into inorganic arsenic and organic metabolites by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during the early stages of the reaction. The degradation pathways of ROX were proposed according to the oxidation intermediates. This work provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the design of adsorbents according to the structure of the target pollutant.

Effect of nickel ion doping in MnO2/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites for lithium adsorption and recovery from aqueous media

Novel and effective reduced graphene oxide–nickel (Ni) doped manganese oxide (RGO/Ni-MnO₂) adsorbents were fabricated via a hydrothermal approach. The reduction of graphite to graphene oxide (GO), formation of α-MnO₂, and decoration of Ni-MnO₂ onto the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were independently carried out by a hydrothermal technique. The physical and morphological properties of the as-synthesized adsorbents were analyzed. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to identify the lithium uptake capacities of adsorbents. The optimized parameters for Li⁺ adsorption investigated were pH = 12, dose loading = 0.1 g, Li⁺ initial concentration = 50 mg L⁻¹, in 10 h at 25 °C. It is noticeable that the highest adsorption of Li⁺ at optimized parameters are in the following order: RGO/Ni3-MnO₂ (63 mg g⁻¹) > RGO/Ni2-MnO₂ (56 mg g⁻¹) > RGO/Ni1-MnO₂ (52 mg g⁻¹). A Kinetic study revealed that the experimental data were best designated pseudo-second order for each adsorbent. Li⁺ desorption experiments were performed using HCl as an extracting agent. Furthermore, all adsorbents exhibit efficient regeneration ability and to some extent satisfying selectivity for Li⁺ recovery. Briefly, it can be concluded that among the fabricated adsorbents, the RGO/Ni3-MnO₂ exhibited the greatest potential for Li⁺ uptake from aqueous solutions as compared to others.

Cr(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution by fungal bioremediation based using Rhizopus sp

The highly toxic species of Chromium in its hexavalent state is an important hazard to the flora and fauna, causing a rupture in balance especially in aquatic environments. The removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions using fungal biomass of Rhizopus sp. was investigated under batch experiments. The biomass was produced and treated with NaCl to compare pre-treated and untreated biosorbents capacity. Adsorption of Cr(VI) was investigated with a 2³ experimental design to determine the best operational parameters including pH [2.0-4.0], temperature [20-40 °C] and agitation [50-150 rpm]. Maximum Cr(VI) uptake (99%) indicated that pH 2.0 is the optimal for Cr(VI) removal. Linear and non-linear kinetic models were evaluated. The best fitting for linear kinetics was the pseudo-second order linear equation and the Elovich model in its non-linear form, suggesting chemisorption as the controlling step of adsorption. Results followed Langmuir isotherm equation, the q_m was 9.95 (mg·g^-1) for Rhizopus sp. + NaCl. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated using the adsorption equilibrium constant obtained from Langmuir isotherm and indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The surface characteristics of the biomass were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra; the analysis showed the involvement of amino groups in the bonding with Cr(VI). SEM and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Cr in the biomass after adsorption. The results of these experiments may be utilized for modeling, simulation, and scale-up processes in the future.

Review of Heavy Metal Adsorption Processes by Several Organic Matters from Wastewaters

Heavy metal contamination of natural rivers and wastewaters is a problem for both the environment and human society. The accumulation and adsorption of heavy metals could happen with several organic and inorganic matters, but the most used adsorbents are (biological and chemical) organic compounds. This review article presents the basics of heavy metal adsorption on several organic surfaces. There are many organic matters, which seem to be useful as agents for heavy metal adsorption. All of the cited authors and articles present the adsorption kinetics by the most used isotherm models (such as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms). By comparing several research results presented by a pre-selected assortment of papers, we would like to give an overview of the microbiological, organic chemical, and other surface adsorption possibilities. We draw conclusions for two new adsorption fields (adsorption with biosorbent and artificial materials). We present an optional possibility to study adsorption kinetics, efficiency and regeneration methods to successfully conclude the heavy metal treatment process, and we make some recommendations about the efficient water usage calculations using the water allowance coefficient (WAC) indicator.

Exploring an in situ LED-illuminated isothermal micro-calorimetric method to investigating the thermodynamic behavior of Chlorella vulgaris during CO2 bio-fixation

Much endeavor has been dispensed recently to evaluate the potential of CO₂ mitigation by microalgae. We introduce an alternative, novel, LED-illumination isothermal microcalorimetric method to assess the thermodynamic behaviors of microalgae for better understanding of their carbon sequestration capacity. Microalgae thermodynamic behaviors were recorded as power-time curves, and their indices such as total heat evolution (Q_T), maximum power output (P_max) and heat generated by per algae cell (J_N/Q) were obtained. The values for highest (74.80 g L^-1) and control sample (0.00 g L^-1) of Q_T, P_max and J_N/Q were 20.85 and 2.32 J; 252.17 and 57.67 μW; 7.91 × ^-06 and 8.80 × ^-07 J cell^-1, respectively. According to the values of Q_T, a general order to promote the CO₂ sequestration was found at 74.8 g L^-1 > 29.92 g L^-1 > 14.96 g L^-1 > 7.48 g L^-1 > 0 g L^-1 of C sources, which directly corresponded to carbon availability in the growth medium. Chlorella vulgaris GIEC-179 showed the highest peak P_max at 74.8 g L^-1 concentration which was directly transformed to their biomass during bio-fixation of CO₂ process. This study is applicable for better understanding of CO₂ fixation performance of algae.

Complex Formation via Hydrogen bonding between Rhodamine B and Montmorillonite in Aqueous Solution

This study investigates the adsorption mechanism differences among four nitrogenous dyes, sulforhodamine G (SRG), uncharged/deprotonated rhodamine B (RhB), orange II (Or II) and methyl blue (MB) by montmorillonite (MMT). MMT adsorption capacity for cationic MB was three times that of uncharged RhB and anionic SRG, while anionic Or II was not absorbed. Colloidal MMT particles have two types of surfaces, basal and edge, that interact with nitrogenous dyes very differently. The surface acidity of MMT was characterized with the pyridine adsorption method using in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS). Adsorption of cationic MB was compared with the adsorption of RhB. In-situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (in-situ ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that a nitrogen atom on RhB complexes with a metal hydroxyl on an MMT edge through a water bridge. The highly polar edge hydroxyl is important to hydrogen bond formation. Cation ion exchange and washing experiments, as well as studies on the effect of temperature, pH and ionic strength on adsorption further clarified the adsorption mechanism. Our results provide insights into the effects of molecular structure on the adsorption of nitrogenous dyes by clay and the role of edge surfaces in the adsorption process.

Preparation of a novel chloromethylated polystyrene-2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole chelating resin and its adsorption properties and mechanism for separation and recovery of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions

With an efficient methodology, a novel chloromethylated polystyrene-g-2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole chelating resin (MTR resin) was prepared via a one-step reaction. The structure of MTR resin was characterized by elements analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Meanwhile, the adsorption properties of the resin for Hg(II) were investigated by batch and column experiments. The results showed that the resin possessed much better adsorption capability for Hg(II) than for other metal ions. The statically and the dynamic saturated adsorption capacities were 343.8 mg/g and 475.1 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic and equilibrium data were well fitted to the second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Desorption of mercury from the resin can be achieved using 30 mL of 2 mol/L HCl-5% thiourea solution with a desorption ratio of 92.3%. Compared with other absorbents, MTR resin was greatly conserve natural resources and reduce the cost.

Tailoring hydrophobic branch in polyzwitterionic resin for simultaneous capturing of Hg(II) and methylene blue with response surface optimization

A new highly efficient cross-linked polymer was synthesized via cyclotetrapolymerization of hydrophilic [(diallylamino)propyl]phosphonic acid hydrochloride (72 mol%), hydrophobic N,N-diallyl-1-[6-(biphenyl-4-yloxy)hexylammonium chloride (18 mol%), cross-linker 1,1,4,4-tetraallylpiperazinium dichloride (10 mol%) with an equivalent amount of alternating SO₂ units (100 mol%). The pH-responsive resin chemically tailored with the aminopropylphosphonate chelating ligand and hydrophobic chain of (CH₂)₆OC₆H₄-C₆H₅ is designed to capture toxic metal ions and organic contaminants simultaneously. The developed resin was used for the remediation of Hg(II) ions and methylene blue from aqueous solutions as models. The experimental conditions were optimized utilizing the response surface methodology as an environmentally friendly method. The adsorption efficiency for Hg(II) was ≈100% at 10 ppm initial concentration at pH 5 at 25 °C, while it was 80% for removal of the dye in a single pollutant system. Interestingly, the resin demonstrated its remarkable efficacy in the simultaneous and complete removal of Hg(II) and the dye from their mixture. Increased removal of the dye (≈100%) in the presence of Hg(II) was attributed to the synergistic effect. The equilibrium data were evaluated by employing the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models.

Cellulose nanocrystal-reinforced keratin bioadsorbent for effective removal of dyes from aqueous solution

High-efficiency and recyclable three-dimensional bioadsorbents were prepared by incorporating cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) as reinforcements in keratin sponge matrix to remove dyes from aqueous solution. Adsorption performance of dyes by CNC-reinforced keratin bioadsorbent was improved significantly as a result of adding CNC as filler. Batch adsorption results showed that the adsorption capacities for Reactive Black 5 and Direct Red 80 by the bioadsorbent were 1201 and 1070mgg^-1, respectively. The isotherms and kinetics for adsorption of both dyes on bioadsorbent followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order model, respectively. Desorption and regeneration experiments showed that the removal efficiencies of the bioadsorbent for both dyes could remain above 80% at the fifth recycling cycles. Moreover, the bioadsorbent possessed excellent packed-bed column operation performance. Those results suggested that the adsorbent could be considered as a high-performance and promising candidate for dye wastewater treatment.

Chitin Adsorbents for Toxic Metals: A Review

Wastewater treatment is still a critical issue all over the world. Among examined methods for the decontamination of wastewaters, adsorption is a promising, cheap, environmentally friendly and efficient procedure. There are various types of adsorbents that have been used to remove different pollutants such as agricultural waste, compost, nanomaterials, algae, etc., Chitin (poly-β-(1,4)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine) is the second most abundant natural biopolymer and it has attracted scientific attention as an inexpensive adsorbent for toxic metals. This review article provides information about the use of chitin as an adsorbent. A list of chitin adsorbents with maximum adsorption capacity and the best isotherm and kinetic fitting models are provided. Moreover, thermodynamic studies, regeneration studies, the mechanism of adsorption and the experimental conditions are also discussed in depth.

Thermodynamic parameters for adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals and dyes from wastewaters: Research updated

The standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy change data for adsorption equilibrium reported in biosorption literature during January 2013-May2016 were listed. Since the studied biosorption systems are all near-equilibrium processes, the enthalpy and entropy change data evaluated by fitting temperature-dependent free energy data using van Hoff's equation reveal a compensation artifact. Additional confusion is introduced with arbitrarily chosen adsorbate concentration unit in bulk solution that added free energy change of mixing into the reported free energy and enthalpy change data. Different standard states may be chosen for properly describing biosorption processes; however, this makes the general comparison between data from different systems inappropriate. No conclusion should be drawn based on unjustified thermodynamic parameters reported in biosorption studies.

Aerobic granulation of protein-rich granules from nitrogen-lean wastewaters

Proteins (PN)-rich granules are stable in structure in long-term reactor operations. This study proposed to cultivate PN-rich granules with PN/polysaccharides (PS) >20 from nitrogen lean wastewater, with ammonia-nitrogen as sole nitrogen source at chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N of 153.8. The yielded granules can sustain their structural stability in sequencing batch reactor mode for sufficient treatment of wastewaters up to 7000mg/L COD and with COD/N<500 and in continuous-flow reactor for successful 216-d treatment of wastewaters up to organic loading rate (OLR) of 39kg/m(3)-d. The produced granules were enriched with Firmicutes and β-proteobacteria as dominating strains. More than 58% of the nitrogen fed in the nitrogen-lean wastewater is converted to the PN in the granules. The replacement of ammonia by nitrate as sole nitrogen source led to granules enriched with γ-proteobacteria which are easily deteriorated at low OLR.

Synthesis and characterization of a novel chloromethylated polystyrene-g-2-adenine chelating resin and its application to preconcentrate and detect the concentration of mercury ions in edible mushroom samples

Edible mushrooms are widely usedtoday but the heavy metal pollution of edible mushrooms is not conducive to its industrialization. A novel chloromethylated polystyrene-g-2-adenine chelating resin (AR resin) with simple technology, high adsorption capacity, significant selectivity, and good regenerability was synthesized. Combined with the UV-Vis method, it was applied to mercury preconcentration and determination. The results indicated that the AR resin is essentially free from interferences, which can contribute to accurate determination in waters and foods. Optimization of the resin synthesis was carried out by using response surface methodology. The adsorption properties of the resin for Hg(II) were investigated by batch and column experiments. The statically and dynamic saturated adsorption capacities were 383.4 and 417.0 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic and equilibrium data were well fitted to the second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Furthermore, the resin and its metal complexes were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) and alginate cross-linked matrix with immobilized Prussian blue and ion exchange resin for cesium removal from waters

Cesium (Cs) removal from contaminated water bodies is an emerging issue after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The Prussian blue (PB) is an effective Cs adsorbent but will release hexacyanoferrate fragments from the adsorbent matrix during adsorption. Alginate is an affordable biopolymer for PB particles immobilization. This study synthesized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and alginate cross-linked matrix for immobilization of PB nano-sized particles and a surface-modified styrene-ethyl styrene divinyl benzene resin and tested their swelling stability and Cs adsorption performance in fresh water and in seawater. The PVA-alginate granules have high structural stability in both fresh water and seawater, with the Cs adsorption capability higher for the former than the latter. The adopted resin effectively remove released PB fragments from the tested granules. The transport and reaction parameters for the granules and for the sand filter bed were estimated.

Aerobic granular processes: Current research trends

Aerobic granules are large biological aggregates with compact interiors that can be used in efficient wastewater treatment. This mini-review presents new researches on the development of aerobic granular processes, extended treatments for complicated pollutants, granulation mechanisms and enhancements of granule stability in long-term operation or storage, and the reuse of waste biomass as renewable resources. A discussion on the challenges of, and prospects for, the commercialization of aerobic granular process is provided.

Fast microwave-assisted preparation of a low-cost and recyclable carboxyl modified lignocellulose-biomass jute fiber for enhanced heavy metal removal from water

A low-cost and recyclable biosorbent derived from jute fiber was developed for high efficient adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) from water. The jute fiber was rapidly pretreated and grafted with metal binding groups (COOH) under microwave heating (MH). The adsorption behavior of carboxyl-modified jute fiber under MH treatment (CMJFMH) toward heavy metal ions followed Langmuir isotherm model (R(2)>0.99) with remarkably high adsorption capacity (157.21, 88.98 and 43.98mg/g for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II), respectively). Also, CMJFMH showed fast removal ability for heavy metals in a highly significant correlation with pseudo second-order kinetics model. Besides, CMJFMH can be easily regenerated with EDTA-2Na solution and reused up to at least four times with equivalent high adsorption capacity. Overall, cheap and abundant production, rapid and facile preparation, fast and efficient adsorption of heavy metals and high regeneration ability can make the CMJFMH a preferred biosorbent for heavy metal removal from water.
