Perchlorate reduction in microbial electrolysis cell with polyaniline modified cathode

Synergistic effect of electrotrophic perchlorate reducing microorganisms and chemically modified electrodes for enhancing bioelectrochemical perchlorate removal

Perchlorate has been described as an emerging pollutant that compromises water sources and human health. In this study, a new electrotrophic perchlorate reducing microorganism (EPRM) isolated from the Atacama Desert, Dechloromonas sp. CS-1, was evaluated for perchlorate removal in water in a bioelectrochemical reactor (BER) with a chemically modified electrode. BERs were operated for 17 days under batch mode conditions with an applied potential of -500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Surface analysis (i.e., SEM, XPS, FT-IR, RAMAN spectroscopy) on the modified electrode demonstrated heterogeneous transformation of the carbon fibers with the incorporation of nitrogen functional groups and the oxidation of the carbonaceous material. The BERs with the modified electrode and the presence of the EAM reached high cathodic efficiency (90.79 ± 9.157%) and removal rate (0.34 ± 0.007 mol m-3-day) compared with both control conditions. The observed catalytic enhancement of CS-1 was confirmed by a reduction in the charge transfer resistance obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Finally, an electrochemical kinetic study revealed an eight-electron perchlorate bioreduction reaction at -638.33 ± 24.132 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Therefore, our results show the synergistic effect of EPRM and chemically modified electrodes on perchlorate removal in a BER.

Electrochemical Modulation of the Flammability of Ionic Liquid Fuels

Flammability and combustion of high energy density liquid propellants are controlled by their volatility. We demonstrate a new concept through which the volatility of a high energy density ionic liquid propellant can be dynamically manipulated enabling one to (a) store a thermally insensitive oxidation resistant nonflammable fuel, (b) generate flammable vapor phase species electrochemically by applying a direct-current voltage bias, and (c) extinguish its flame by removing the voltage bias, which stops its volatilization. We show that a thermally stable imidazolium-based energy dense ionic liquid can be made flammable or nonflammable simply by application or withdrawal of a direct-current bias. This cycle can be repeated as often as desired. The estimated energy penalty of the electrochemical activation process is only ∼4% of the total energy release. This approach presents a paradigm shift, offering the potential to make a "safe fuel" or alternatively a simple electrochemically driven fuel metering scheme.

Environmental occurrence, toxicity and remediation of perchlorate - A review

Perchlorate (ClO4-) comes under the class of contaminants called the emerging contaminants that will impact environment in the near future. A strong oxidizer by nature, perchlorate has received significant observation due to its occurrence, reactive nature, and persistence in varied environments such as surface water, groundwater, soil, and food. Perchlorate finds its use in number of industrial products ranging from missile fuel, fertilizers, and fireworks. Perchlorate exposure occurs when naturally occurring or manmade perchlorate in water or food is ingested. Perchlorate ingestion affects iodide absorption into the thyroid, thereby causing a decrease in the synthesis of thyroid hormone, a very crucial component needed for metabolism, neural development, and a number of other physiological functions in the body. Perchlorate remediation from ground water and drinking water is carried out through a series of physical-chemical techniques like ion (particle) transfer and reverse osmosis. However, the generation of waste through these processes are difficult to manage, so the need for alternative treatment methods occur. This review talks about the hybrid technologies that are currently researched and gaining momentum in the treatment of emerging contaminants, namely perchlorate.

Application of bioelectrochemical systems to regulate and accelerate the anaerobic digestion processes

Anaerobic digestion (AD) serves as a potential bioconversion process to treat various organic wastes/wastewaters, including sewage sludge, and generate renewable green energy. Despite its efficiency, AD has several limitations that need to be overcome to achieve maximum energy recovery from organic materials while regulating inhibitory substances. Hence, bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been widely investigated to treat inhibitory compounds including ammonia in AD processes and improve the AD operational efficiency, stability, and economic viability with various integrations. The BES operations as a pretreatment process, inside AD or after the AD process aids in the upgradation of biogas (CO₂ to methane) and residual volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to valuable chemicals and fuels (alcohols) and even directly to electricity generation. This review presents a comprehensive summary of BES technologies and operations for overcoming the limitations of AD in lab-scale applications and suggests upscaling and future opportunities for BES-AD systems.

Catalytic enhancement of hydrogenation reduction and oxygen transfer reaction for perchlorate removal: A review

Perchlorate is the main contaminant in surface water and groundwater, and it is of current urgency to remove due to its high water solubility, mobility, and endocrine-disrupting properties. The conversion of perchlorate into harmless chloride ions by using appropriate catalysts is the most promising and effective route to overcome its high activation energy and kinetic stability. Perchlorate is usually reduced in two ways: (1) indirect reduction via oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reaction or (2) hydrodeoxygenation through highly active reducing H atoms. This paper discusses the mechanisms underlying both the OAT reaction catalyzed by homogenous rhenium-oxo complexes or biological Mo-based enzymes and the heterogeneous hydrogenation for perchlorate reduction. Particular emphasis is placed on the factors affecting the catalytic process and the synergy between the (1) and (2) reactions. For completeness, the applicability of different electrolysis devices, electrodes, and bioreactors is also illustrated. Finally, this article gives prospects for the synthesis and application of catalysts in different pathways.

Bioelectrochemical chlorate reduction by Dechloromonas agitata CKB

Chlorate has been described as an emerging pollutant that compromises water sources. In this study, bioelectrochemical reactors (BERs) using Dechloromonas agitata CKB, were evaluated as a sustainable alternative for chlorate removal. BERs were operated under flow-recirculation and batch modes with an applied cell-voltage of 0.44 V over a resistance of 1 kΩ. Results show chlorate removal up to 607.288 mg/L. After 115 days, scanning electron microscopy showed biofilm development over the electrodes, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed the biocatalytic effect of CKB. The theoretical chlorate bioreduction potential (ε° = 0.792 V) was proven, and a kinetic study indicated that 6 electrons were involved in the reduction mechanism. Finally, a hypothetical bioelectrochemical mechanism for chlorate reduction in a BER was proposed. This research expands upon current knowledge of novel electrochemically active microorganisms and widens the scope of BER applications for chlorate removal.

Producing electrical energy in microbial fuel cells based on sulphate reduction: a review

Combination of the treatment of effluents with high organic loads and the production of electricity is the driving forces stimulating the development of microbial fuel cells (MFC). The increase in electricity production in MFCs requires not only the optimization of the operational parameters but also the inhibition of the metabolic pathways, which compete with electricity production, such as methanogenesis. The presence of both sulphate and sulphide ions in conventional anaerobic reactors hampers the growth of methanogenic archaea and justifies the use of sulphate and therefore sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the anodic half-cell of MFC. Most importantly, the literature on the subject reveals that SRB are able to directly transfer electrons to solid electrodes, enabling the production of electrical energy. This technology is versatile because it associates the removal of both sulphate and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) with the production of electricity. Therefore, the current work revises the main aspects related to the inoculation of MFC with SRB focusing on (i) the microbial interactions in the anodic chamber, (ii) the electron transfer pathways to the solid anode, and also (iii) the sulphate and COD removal yields along with the electricity production efficiencies.

Progress and Prospects of Bioelectrochemical Systems: Electron Transfer and Its Applications in the Microbial Metabolism

Bioelectrochemical systems are revolutionary new bioengineering technologies which integrate microorganisms or enzymes with the electrochemical method to improve the reducing or oxidizing metabolism. Generally, the bioelectrochemical systems show the processes referring to electrical power generation or achieving the reducing reaction with a certain potential poised by means of electron transfer between the electron acceptor and electron donor. Researchers have focused on the selection and optimization of the electrode materials, design of electrochemical device, and screening of electrochemically active or inactive model microorganisms. Notably, all these means and studies are related to electron transfer: efflux and consumption. Thus, here we introduce the basic concepts of bioelectrochemical systems, and elaborate on the extracellular and intracellular electron transfer, and the hypothetical electron transfer mechanism. Also, intracellular energy generation and coenzyme metabolism along with electron transfer are analyzed. Finally, the applications of bioelectrochemical systems and the prospect of microbial electrochemical technologies are discussed.

Biological perchlorate reduction: which electron donor we can choose?

Biological reduction is an effective method for removal of perchlorate (ClO₄^-), where perchlorate is transformed into chloride by perchlorate-reducing bacteria (PRB). An external electron donor is required for autotrophic and heterotrophic reduction of perchlorate. Therefore, plenty of suitable electron donors including organic (e.g., acetate, ethanol, carbohydrate, glycerol, methane) and inorganic (e.g., hydrogen, zero-valent iron, element sulfur, anthrahydroquinone) as well as the cathode have been used in biological reduction of perchlorate. This paper reviews the application of various electron donors in biological perchlorate reduction and their influences on treatment efficiency of perchlorate and biological activity of PRB. We discussed the criteria for selection of appropriate electron donor to provide a flexible strategy of electron donor choice for the bioremediation of perchlorate-contaminated water.

Perchlorate Removal in Microbial Electrochemical Systems With Iron/Carbon Electrodes

Perchlorate removal was tested in the cathode chamber of microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). Dual-chambers MESs were constructed and operated in batch mode with four kinds of cathode materials including Fe/C particles (Fe/C), zero valent iron particles (ZVI), blank carbon felt (CF), and active carbon (AC). Without external energy supply or perchlorate-reducing microbial pre-enrichment, perchlorate ( ClO 4 - ) removal could be achieved in the cathode chambers of MESs at different efficiencies. The highest ClO 4 - removal rates in these reactors were 18.96 (Fe/C, 100 Ω, 2 days), 15.84 (ZVI, 100 Ω, 2 days), 14.37 (CF, 100 Ω, 3 days), and 19.78 mg/L/day (AC, 100 Ω, 2 days). ClO 4 - degradation products were mainly Cl^- and ClO 3 - , and the total chlorine in the products was lower than the theoretical input. The non-conservation of the total chlorine may be caused by the adsorption and co-precipitation related to the electrode materials. Coulombs and coulombic efficiency calculation showed that electron provided by MESs was partially responsible for ClO 4 - reduction, for the Fe/C cathode reactors, about a quarter of electron was provided by MESs.

Bio-mixotrophic perchlorate reduction to control sulfate production in a step-feed sulfur-based reactor: A study of kinetics, ORP and bacterial community structure

Excess sulfate production and low concentration of perchlorate removal are the main problems for sulfur-based perchlorate reduction reactor. In this study, the problems were firstly solved by step-feeding under mixotrophic conditions. The performances of step-feed sulfur-based reactor (SFSBR) and up-flow sulfur-based reactor (UFSBR) are compared. At perchlorate of 194 mg/L, acetate of 28.8 mg/L and hydraulic retention time of 0.9 h, the Half-order reaction rate constant and the sulfate production of SFSBR were 29.7 mg^1/2/L^1/2·h and 171 mg/L, respectively, which were superior to those of UFSBR. The oxidation-reduction potential values of SFSBR were lower than that of UFSBR. Meanwhile, the biodiversity along the height of the reactor was decreased by step-feeding. Principal component analysis showed significant interrelations existed among the bacterial community composition and the operational/environmental conditions in each treatment zone. Consequently, the SFSBR provides an effectively alteration for the removal of high perchlorate concentration and control sulfate.

Bioelectrochemical Systems for Removal of Selected Metals and Perchlorate from Groundwater: A Review

Groundwater contamination is a major issue for human health, due to its largely diffused exploitation for water supply. Several pollutants have been detected in groundwater; amongst them arsenic, cadmium, chromium, vanadium, and perchlorate. Various technologies have been applied for groundwater remediation, involving physical, chemical, and biological processes. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have emerged over the last 15 years as an alternative to conventional treatments for a wide variety of wastewater, and have been proposed as a feasible option for groundwater remediation due to the nature of the technology: the presence of two different redox environments, the use of electrodes as virtually inexhaustible electron acceptor/donor (anode and cathode, respectively), and the possibility of microbial catalysis enhance their possibility to achieve complete remediation of contaminants, even in combination. Arsenic and organic matter can be oxidized at the bioanode, while vanadium, perchlorate, chromium, and cadmium can be reduced at the cathode, which can be biotic or abiotic. Additionally, BES has been shown to produce bioenergy while performing organic contaminants removal, lowering the overall energy balance. This review examines the application of BES for groundwater remediation of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, vanadium, and perchlorate, focusing also on the perspectives of the technology in the groundwater treatment field.

Bioelectroremediation of perchlorate and nitrate contaminated water: A review

Fresh water is a fundamental source for humans, hence the recent shrinkage in freshwater and increase in water pollution are imperative problems that vigorously affect the people and the environment worldwide. The breakneck industrialization contributes to the procreation of substantial abundance of wastewater and its treatment becomes highly indispensable. Perchlorate and nitrate containing wastewaters poses a serious threat to human health and environment. Conventional biological treatment methods are expensive and also not effective for treating wastewater effectively and incapable of in situ bioremediation. Bioelectrochemical systems are emerging as a new technology platform for a sustainable removal of such contaminants from wastewater streams. This article reviews the state of art of bioelectroremediation of contaminated waters with perchlorate and nitrate. Different aspects of this technology such as configuration and design, mode of operation and type of substrate are considered in detail.

Electrocatalytic properties of N-doped graphite felt in electro-Fenton process and degradation mechanism of levofloxacin

The degradation of antibiotic levofloxacin was investigated by dimensionally stable anode as well as modified cathode using low-cost chemical reagents of hydrazine hydrate and ethanol for electro-Fenton in an undivided cell at pH 3.0 under room temperature. Comparison of unmodified and modified cathode was performed. The apparent rate constant of levofloxacin decay was found to be 0.2883 min^-1 for graphite felt-10 with the best performance at 200 mA, which is lower than graphite felt at 400 mA. The optimum modified cathode showed a significant improvement of complete mineralization of levofloxacin, reaching a 92% TOC removal at 200 mA for 480 min higher than unmodified one at twice the current. Surface physicochemical properties and morphology were investigated by scanning electron microscope, contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical characterization of hydrogen evolution reaction was adopted to clarify a possible pathway for the higher mineralization of levofloxacin, indicating a potential pilot-scale study to the pollution with the similar structure.

The effect of anode potential on bioelectrochemical and electrochemical tetrathionate degradation

The effect of poised anode potential on electricity production and tetrathionate degradation was studied in two-chamber flow-through electrochemical (ES) and bioelectrochemical systems (BES). The minimum anode potential (vs. Ag/AgCl) for positive current generation was 0.3V in BES and 0.5V in the abiotic ES. The anode potential required to obtain average current density above 70mAm^-2 was 0.4V in BES and above 0.7V in ES. ES provided higher coulombic efficiency, but the average tetrathionate degradation rate remained significantly higher in BES (above 110mgL^-1d^-1) than in the abiotic ES (below 35mgL^-1d^-1). This study shows that at anode potentials below 0.7V, the electrochemical tetrathionate degradation is only efficient with microbial catalyst and that significantly higher tetrathionate degradation rates can be obtained with bioelectrochemical systems than with electrochemical systems at the tested anode potentials.

Polyaniline-Supported Bacterial Biofilms as Active Matrices for Platinum Nanoparticles: Enhancement of Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide

A hybrid matrix composed of a porous polyaniline underlayer, a robust bacterial biofilm and a multiwalled carbon nanotube overlayer has been demonstrated to function as highly active support for dispersed Pt catalytic nanoparticles during the electroreduction of carbon dioxide in neutral medium (phosphate buffer at pH 6.1). In contrast with bare Pt nanoparticles (deposited at a glassy carbon substrate), application of the hybrid system produces sizeable CO2-reduction currents in comparison to those originating from hydrogen evolution. The result is consistent with an enhancement in the reduction of carbon dioxide. However, the biofilm-based matrix tends to inhibit the catalytic properties of platinum towards proton discharge (competitive reaction) or even oxygen reduction. The hydrated structure permits easy unimpeded flow of aqueous electrolyte at the electrocatalytic interface. Although application of the polyaniline underlayer can be interpreted in terms of stabilization and improvement of the biofilm adherence, the use of carbon nanotubes facilitates electron transfer to Pt catalytic sites. It is apparent from the voltammetric stripping-type analytical experiments that, although formation of some methanol and methanoic acid cannot be excluded, carbon monoxide seems to be the main CO2-reduction product.

Removal of perchlorate from water using a biofilm magnetic ion exchange resin: feasibility and effects of dissolved oxygen, pH and competing ions
