Abstract
Inoculation is widely used in composting to improve the mineralization process, however, the link of fungal inoculant to humification is rarely proposed. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of compound fungal inoculation on humification process and fungal community dynamics in corn straw composting with two different kinds of nitrogen sources [pig manure (PM) and urea (UR)]. Structural equation modeling and random forest analysis were conducted to identify key fungi and explore the fungi-mediated humification mechanism. Results showed that fungal inoculation increased the content of humic acids in PM and UR by 71.76 % and 53.01 % compared to control, respectively. High-throughput sequencing indicated that there were more key fungal genera for lignin degradation in PM especially in the later stage of composting, but a more complex fungal (genera) connections with lower humification degree was found in UR. Network analysis and random forest suggested that inoculation promoted dominant genus such as Coprinus, affecting lignocellulose degradation. Structural equation modeling indicated that fungal inoculation could promote humification by direct pathway based on lignin degradation and indirect pathway based on stimulating the indigenous microbes such as Scedosporiu and Coprinus for the accumulation of carboxyl and polyphenol hydroxyl groups. In summary, fungal inoculation is suitable to be used combining with complex nitrogen source such as pig manure in straw composting.

Abstract
Microorganisms drive the degradation of organic matter thanks to their enzymatic versatility. However, the structure of lignocellulose poses a great challenge for the microbiota inhabiting a compost pile. Our purpose was to increase the biodegradability of vegetable waste in the early stages of the composting process by applying a microbial consortium with lignocelllulolytic capacity. For this, a previous screening was performed among the culturable microbiota from different composting processes to find inoculants with ligninocellulolytic activity. Selected strains were applied as a pure culture and as a microbial consortium. The starting material was composed of tomato plant and pruning remains mixed in a ratio (50:50 v/v), whose humidity was adjusted to around 65%. To determine the ability of both treatments to activate the biodegradation of the mixtures, moisture, organic matter, ash, C/N ratio, 4-day cumulative respirometric index (AT4) and degradation rates of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin were evaluated. Subsequently, a real composting process was developed in which the performance of the microbial consortium was compared with the composting process without inoculum (control). According to our tests, three microbial strains (Bacillus safensis, Bacillus licheniformis and Fusarium oxysporum) were selected. The results showed that the application of the bacteria strains at low doses (104 CFU g-1 on the complete residual material of the pile) resulted in higher rates of lignocelullose degradation after 10 days of treatment compared to that observed after application of the fungus in pure culture or untreated controls. The implementation of the strategy described in this work resulted in obtaining compost with better agronomic quality than the uninoculated controls. Therefore, the application of this consortium could be considered as an interesting tool for bioactivation of lignocellulosic waste prior to the composting process.

Abstract
Gut microbes play a vital role in the health and disease of animals, especially in relation to pathogen infections. Chinchillas, ferrets, and marmots are commonly used as important laboratory animals for infectious disease research. Here, we studied the bacterial and fungal microbiota and discovered that chinchillas had higher alpha diversity and a higher abundance of bacteria compared to marmots and ferrets by using the metabarcoding of 16S rRNA genes and ITS2, coupled with co-occurrence network analysis. The dominant microbes varied significantly among the three animal species, particularly in the gut mycobiota. In the ferrets, the feces were dominated by yeast such as Rhodotorula and Kurtzmaniella, while in the chinchillas, we found Teunomyces and Penicillium dominating, and Acaulium, Piromyces, and Kernia in the marmots. Nevertheless, the dominant bacterial genera shared some similarities, such as Clostridium and Pseudomonas across the three animal species. However, there were significant differences observed, such as Vagococcus and Ignatzschineria in the ferrets, Acinetobacter and Bacteroides in the chinchillas, and Bacteroides and Cellvibrio in the marmots. Additionally, our differential analysis revealed significant differences in classification levels among the three different animal species, as well as variations in feeding habitats that resulted in distinct contributions from the host microbiome. Therefore, our data are valuable for monitoring and evaluating the impacts of the microbiome, as well as considering potential applications.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of bulking agents on the maturity and gaseous emissions of composting kitchen waste. The composing experiments were carried out by selected core bacterial agents and universal bacterial agents for 20 days. The results demonstrated that the addition of core microbial agents effectively controlled the emission of typical odor-producing compounds. The addition of core and universal bacterial agents drastically reduced NH3 emissions by 94% and 74%, and decreased H2S emissions by 78% and 27%. The application of core microbial agents during composting elevated the peak temperature to 65 °C and in terms of efficient temperature evolution (>55 °C for 8 consecutive days). The organic matter degradation decreased by 65% from the initial values for core microbial agents were added, while for the other treatments the reduction was slight. Adding core microbial agents to kitchen waste produced mature compost with a higher germination index (GI) 112%, while other treatments did not fully mature and had a GI of <70%. Microbial analysis demonstrated that the core microbial agents in composting increased the relative abundances of Weissella, Ignatzschineria, and Bacteroides. Network and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the core microbial agents enhanced the relationship between bacteria and the eight indicators (p < 0.01), thereby improving the bio transformation of compounds during composting. Overall, these results suggest that the careful selection of appropriate inoculation microorganisms is crucial for improved biological transformation and nutrient content composting efficacy of kitchen waste.

Abstract
Microbial inoculation was an effective way to improve product quality of composting and solve traditional composting shortage. However, the effect mechanism of microbial inoculation on compost microorganisms remains unclear. Here, Shifts in bacterial community, metabolic function and co-occurrence network during the primary and secondary fermentation stages of bio-compost inoculated with effective microorganisms (EM) agent were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing and network analysis. Microbial inoculation promoted organic carbon transformation in early stage of secondary fermentation (days 27 to 31). The beneficial biocontrol bacteria were main dominant genera at the second fermentation stage. Microbial inoculation can be good for the survival of beneficial bacteria. Inoculation with microbes promoted amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and inhibited energy metabolism and citrate cycle (TCA cycle). Microbial inoculation could enhance complexity of bacterial network and enhance mutual cooperation among bacteria during composting.

Abstract
To excavate a complex co-degradation system for decomposing cellulose more efficiently, cellulose-degrading bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis WF-8, Bacillus licheniformis WF-11, Bacillus Cereus WS-1 and Streptomyces Nogalater WF-10 were added during maize straw and cattle manure aerobic composting. Bacillus and Streptomyces successfully colonized, which improve cellulose degrading ability. Continuous colonization of cellulose-degrading bacteria can promote the fungi to produce more precursors for humus and promote the negative correlation with Ascomycota. In the current study, the addition of cellulose-degrading bacteria has resulted in the rapid development of Mycothermus and Remersonia in the phylum Ascomycota as keystone fungal genera which constitute the foundation of the co-degradation system. Network analysis reveals the complex co-degradation system of efficient cellulose bacteria and mature fungi to treat cellulose in the process of straw aerobic composting mainly related to the influence of total carbon (TC) /total nitrogen (TN) and humic acid (HA)/fulvic acid (FA). This research offers a complex co-degradation system more efficiently to decompose cellulose aiming to maintain the long-term sustainability of agriculture.

Abstract
Fungal degradation of cellulose is a key step in the conversion of organic matter in composting. This study investigated the effects of adding 10% biochar (including, prepared from corn stalk and rape stalk corresponding to CSB and RSB) on organic matter transformation in composting and determined the role of cellulase and fungal communities in the conversion of organic matter. The results showed that biochar could enhance the conversion of organic matter, especially in RSB treatment. Biochar could increase cellulase activity, and RSB could enhance 33.78% and 30.70% the average activity of cellulase compared with the control and CSB treatments in the mesophilic to thermophilic phase, respectively. The results of high throughput sequencing demonstrated that Basidiomycota dominant in mesophilic phase, and Ascomycota dominant in other phases of composting. The redundancy analysis showed that Alternaria, Thermomycees, Aspergillus, Wallemia, and Melanocarpus might be the key fungi for the degradation of organic matter, and Fusarium, Penicillium, and Scopulariopsis may promote the conversion of organic matter. Network showed that the addition of RSB changed the interactions between fungal communities and organic matter transformation, and RSB treatment enriched members of Ascomycota related to organic matter transformation and cellulase activity. These results indicated that RSB improved organic matter conversion by enhancing the role of cellulase and fungal communities.

Abstract
IntroductionThe bad management of organic waste negatively affects environmental quality and composting has been a viable recycling alternative. Microorganisms are responsible for waste degradation during the composting process and, consequently, for transforming this waste into natural fertilizer. This work aimed to analyze and identify the biodiversity of yeasts and filamentous fungi throughout a composting process based on organic residues under different treatments (commercial inoculum, non-commercial inoculum, and control treatment) and to investigate the enzymatic activity of these microorganisms.MethodsMicroorganisms were isolated and identified from samples at 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 120 days. Filamentous fungi were identified according to their macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, and yeasts were identified by sequencing the 18S rDNA region. All identified strains were evaluated for ligninolytic, cellulolytic, hemicellulolytic, amylolytic, pectinolytic, proteolytic, lipolytic, and ammonification. During the composting phases, the filamentous fungi were higher than the yeast population.Results and discussionAt the beginning of the process, a higher species diversity was observed, and the population of yeasts and filamentous fungi was, on average, 6.50 log CFU g−1. The microbial communities were similar throughout the process in the two inoculated treatments, which showed more significant microbial activity, diversity, and efficiency in the transformation of organic matter, and consequently, advantages in terms of the final product quality compared to the control treatment. The yeasts Pichia kudriavzevii, Pichia farinosa, Issatchenkia orientalis, and the filamentous fungi of the genus Aspergillus spp. proved to have high biotechnological value and could be used as starter cultures to accelerate the composting process.

Abstract
As one core of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), Guangdong is facing some serious coastal environmental problems. Fungi are more vulnerable to changes in coastal environments than bacteria and archaea. This study investigated the fungal diversity and composition by high-throughput sequencing and detected basic parameters of seven environmental factors (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) at 11 sites. A total of 2056 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) belonging to 147 genera in 6 phyla were recovered; Archaeorhizomyces (17.5%) and Aspergillus (14.19%) were the most dominant genera. Interestingly, a total of 14 genera represented the first reports of coastal fungi in this study. Furthermore, there were nine genera of fungi that were significantly correlated with environmental factors. FUNGuild analysis indicated that saprotrophs and pathogens were the two trophic types with the highest proportions. Saprotrophs were significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), while pathogens were significantly correlated with pH. This study provides new scientific data for the study of the diversity and composition of fungal communities in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract
Elucidating community assembly and their relevance to environmental variables are fundamental for understanding microbial diversity and functioning in terrestrial ecosystems, yet the geographical diversity and assembly patterns of the fungal community in metalliferous ecospheres associated with mining and smelting activities have received penurious understandings. Here, the fungal communities collected from three groups of soils around the mining and smelting sites were profiled by Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequencing, in order to understand the geographical distributions of fungal community diversities, structures, compositions, assembly processes and the occurrence patterns. The results suggested obvious biogeographic distribution patterns of fungal compositions among the three groups of soils. Among them, 15 fungal phyla including Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Mortierellomycota were recognized across the samples. 12 abundant classes showing significantly different in relative abundances among the three groups of soils. Total metal(loid)s and level significantly decreased the fungal abundances and diversities. The community similarity demonstrated distance-decay pattern among the three sites. Metal(loid)s explained relatively higher fungal community variations (4.16 %) relative to other factors (1.89 %) and geography (1.21 %), though 83.32 % of the variations could not be explained. Stochastic dispersal limitation and undominated fraction were dominated relative to deterministic heterogeneous selection in total and individual site, respectively. These results highlighted the stochastic processes in governing the biogeography of fungal communities in mining and smelting ecospheres.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the dynamic of microbial community and metabolic function in food waste composting amended with traditional Chinese medicine residues (TCMRs). Results suggested that TCMRs addition at up to 10% leads to a higher peak temperature (60.5 °C), germination index (GI) value (119.26%), and a greater reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) content (8.08%). 10% TCMRs significantly induced the fluctuation of bacterial community composition, as well as the fungal community in the thermophilic phase. The addition of 10% TCMRs enhanced the abundance of bacterial genera such as Acetobacter, Bacillus, and Brevundimonas, as well as fungal genera such as Chaetomium, Thermascus, and Coprinopsis, which accelerated lignocellulose degradation and humification degree. Conversely, the growth of Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas was inhibited by 10% TCMRs to weaken the acidic environment and reduce nitrogen loss. Metabolic function analysis revealed that 10% TCMRs promoted the metabolism of carbohydrate and amino acid, especially citrate cycle, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and cysteine and methionine metabolism. Redundancy analysis showed that the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was the most significant environmental factor influencing the dynamic of bacterial and fungal communities.

Abstract
There are few reports on the material transformation and dominant microorganisms in the process of greening waste (GW) composting. In this study, the target microbial community succession and material transformation were studied in GW composting by using MiSeq sequencing and PICRUSt tools. The results showed that the composting process could be divided into four phases. Each phase of the composting appeared in turn and was unable to jump. In the calefactive phase, microorganisms decompose small molecular organics such as FA to accelerate the arrival of the thermophilic phase. In the thermophilic phase, thermophilic microorganisms decompose HA and lignocellulose to produce FA. While in the cooling phase, microorganisms degrade HA and FA for growth and reproduction. In the maturation phase, microorganisms synthesize humus using FA, amino acid and lignin nuclei as precursors. In the four phases of the composting, different representative genera of bacteria and fungi were detected. Streptomyces, Myceliophthora and Aspergillus, maintained high abundance in all phases of the compost. Correlation analysis indicated that bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi had synergistic effect on the degradation of lignocellulose. Therefore, it can accelerate the compost process by maintaining the thermophilic phase and adding a certain amount of FA in the maturation phase.

Abstract
This study investigated effects of composite microbes (CMs) (Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trichoderma longibrachiatum) on humification during co-composting of biogas residue, spent mushroom substrate and rice straw. Results showed that CMs inoculation elevated degradation ratios of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 7.86%, 8.87% and 6.45%, and contents of humus and humic acid were correspondingly promoted by 15.5% and 23.6%, respectively. Relative abundances of bacteria associated with refractory macromolecules degradation (Flavobacterium, Anseongella and Actinomadura) and cellulolytic fungi (Hypocreales_Incertae_sedis, Hypocreaceae and Psathyrellaceae) were raised by CMs addition. Redundancy analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between microbial communities and temperature, fulvic acid and lignocellulose contents. Moreover, CMs inoculation promoted pathways of xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, and biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, which was closely associated with lignocellulose degradation and humus formation. These results suggested that biological inoculation could enhance composting efficiency and improve compost quality, benefiting biogas residues composting.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of initial feedstock concentration on the microbial community structure and dynamics during textile waste composting processes was investigated using the next-generation sequencing approach. For this, three mixtures were prepared with different textile waste concentrations mixed with green waste and paper and cardboard waste for composting, to choose the proportion that will provide a mature final compost. A comprehensive characterization of the microbial communities associated with different textile waste concentrations during composting was achieved. It was noted that by increasing the concentration of textile waste, microbial communities (bacterial and fungal) change. Genera and species belonging to Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexia, Rozellomycota, Mortierellomycota, Aphelidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mucoromycota were the most abundant in the mixtures containing either 40 or 60% of textile waste, whereas some of the species were absent at 80% of textile waste in the mix; this difference was also reflected by their enzymatic activities. Generally, these phyla are associated with composting, and they play a major role in recalcitrant molecular decaying. Ultimately, it can be concluded that the shift most likely occurred in microbial communities during composting probably owing to the interaction between changes in the nutrient concentration and microbial communities. This investigation proves that the concentration of textile waste significantly affects the microbial communities and demonstrates that a high concentration of textile waste is not suitable to grant a good maturity of compost.

Abstract
Though aerobic composting has been frequently applied to kitchen waste disposal, appropriate bulking agents are essential to acquire a promising performance. Fallen leaves and tree pruning in urbans face huge disposal demands and have great potentials as bulking agents of aerobic composting while have been seldom examined yet. This study comparably explored the performance of fallen leaves bulked and tree pruning bulked aerobic composting disposing kitchen waste. Results indicated that though both reactors were effective in degrading kitchen waste, leaf bulked composting was superior to tree pruning bulked composting in terms of longer thermophilic period and higher maximum temperature, higher organics degradation efficiency, higher humification and less odorous gas emission. Bacterial community was a driving mechanism for above results. This study shows that fallen leaves bulked aerobic composting has great potentials for kitchen waste disposal.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find an economical and effective amendment for improving composting performance and product quality, as well as to analyze the microbial community succession in the whole phase of composting. Therefore, the effect of reusable amendment bamboo sphere on composting performance and microbial community succession during food waste composting was investigated. The results showed that 6% bamboo sphere treatment had the highest degree of polymerization (3.7) and humification index (0.18). Compared with control, 6% bamboo sphere amendment increased total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP) and potassium (TK) contents by 13.61%, 19% and 17.42%, respectively. Furthermore, bamboo sphere enhanced bacterial-fungal diversity and improved microbial community composition by enhancing the relative abundance of thermo-tolerance and lignocellulolytic bacteria and fungi. The five most abundant genera in bamboo sphere composting comprised Bacillus (0-71.47%), Chloroplast-norank (0-47.17%), Pusillimonas (0-33.24%), Acinetobacter (0-27.98%) and unclassified Sphingobacteriaceae (0-22.62%). Linear discriminant analysis effect size showed that Firmicutes, Thermoascaceae and Actinobacteriota, which have a relationship with the decomposition of soluble organic matter and lignocellulose, were significantly enriched in bamboo sphere treatment. Canonical correspondence analysis illustrated that total organic carbon (TOC), TK, and TP were the most important environmental factors on microbial community succession in the two composting systems. Together these results suggest that bamboo sphere as a reusable amendment can shorten maturity period, improve humification degree, increase the contents of nutrient and contribute to the succession of microbial community during food waste composting. These findings provide a theoretical basis for improving the efficiency of food waste composting.

Abstract
Composting is a promising source of mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms directly involved in the decay of organic matter. However, there is a paucity of information related to bacterial and fungal diversity in compost and their enzymatic activities during the composting process. In this work, bacterial and fungal diversity during the mesophilic and thermophilic phases of textile waste composting was investigated as a way to explain the physical–chemical results obtained during the composting process. This was accomplished using a next-generation sequencing approach that targets either the 16S rRNA or ITS genomic regions of bacteria and fungi, respectively. It was observed that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla present at the mesophilic phase but not at the thermophilic one. Composting textile waste exhibits a sustained thermophilic profile (above 55 °C) that usually precludes fungal activity. Nonetheless, the presence of fungi at the thermophilic phase was observed. Rozellomycota, Basidiomycota, and Ascomycota were the most dominant phyla during both composting phases. Such thermophilic fungi with great ability to decay organic matter could be isolated as pure cultures and used for the bioaugmentation of textile waste composting to achieve an advanced maturity level of textile waste compost.

Abstract
Combining hydrothermal treatment and composting is an effective method to dispose of penicillin fermentation residue (PFR), but the safety and related mechanism are still unclear. In this study, penicillin solution was hydrothermally treated to decipher its degradation mechanism, and then hydrothermally treated PFR (HT-PFR) was mixed with bulking agents at ratios of 2:0 (CK), 2:1.5 (T1), and 2:5 (T2) to determine the absolute abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the succession of bacterial community. Results showed that penicillin was degraded to several new compounds without the initial lactam structure after hydrothermal treatment. During composting, temperature and pH of the composts increased with the raising of HT-PFR proportion, except the pH at days 2. After 52 days of composting, the absolute copies of ARGs (blaTEM, blaCMY2, and blaSFO) and the relative abundance of bacteria related to pathogens were reduced significantly (P < 0.05). Especially, the total amount of ARGs in the samples of CK and T1 were decreased to equal level (around 5 log10 copies/g), which indicated that more ARGs were degraded in the latter by the composting process. In the CK samples, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria accounted for ~69.8% of the total bacteria, but they were gradually replaced by Firmicutes with increasing proportions of HT-PFR, which can be caused by the high protein content in PFR. Consisting with bacterial community, more gram-positive bacteria were observed in T1 and T2, and most of them are related to manganese oxidation and chitinolysis. As composting proceeded, bacteria having symbiotic or pathogenic relationships with animals and plants were reduced, but those related to ureolysis and cellulolysis were enriched. Above all, hydrothermal treatment is effective in destroying the lactam structure of penicillin, which makes that most ARGs and pathogenic bacteria are eliminated in the subsequent composting.

Abstract
This study explored the effects of single-stage inoculation (SSI) versus two-stage inoculation (TSI) on organic carbon components, product quality and fungal community during co-composting of cattle manure and rice straw. Both inoculation methods accelerated the temperature increase and elevated the composting temperature. TSI resulted in a second fermentation stage and extended the thermophilic stage from 22 to 29 days. Compared with SSI, TSI promoted the degradation degree of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 25.9%, 16.5% and 47.4%, and increased the content of total nutrients and humus carbon by 5.9% and 10.5% in final products, respectively. TSI significantly increased the relative abundance of Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Neurospora, Mycothermus, Malbranchea and Gloeophyllum in the second fermentation stage. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that Aspergillus, Neurospora, Trichoderma and Gloeophyllum were the key fungi for lignocellulose degradation and humification. Redundancy analysis showed that temperature was the major environmental factor affecting fungal community succession in TSI.

Abstract
RNA-based high-throughput sequencing is a valuable tool in the discernment of the implication of metabolically active bacteria during composting. In this study, "alperujo" composting was used as microbial model for the elucidation of structure-function relationships with physicochemical transformation of the organic matter. DNA and RNA, subsequently retrotranscribed into cDNA, were isolated at the mesophilic, thermophilic and maturation phases. 16S rRNA gene was amplified by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Illumina MiSeq platform to assess bacterial abundance and diversity, respectively. The results showed that the abundance of active bacteria assessed by qPCR was maximum at thermophilic phase, which confirm it as the most active stage of the process. Concerning diversity, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria were the main phyla presented in composts. Concomitantly, three different behaviours were observed for bacterial dynamics: some genera decreased during the whole process meanwhile others proliferated only at thermophilic or maturation phase. Statistical correlation between physicochemical transformations of the organic matter and bacterial diversity revealed bacterial specialisation. This result indicated that specific groups of bacteria were only involved in the organic matter degradation during bio-oxidative phase or humification at maturation. Metabolic functions predictions confirmed that active bacteria were mainly involved in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles transformations, and pathogen reduction.

Abstract
The plant residues of tomato bring pressures to the environment and composting provides a feasible method to treat such agricultural waste. However, little is known about the succession and associations of the dominant lignocellulose degraders in the compost system. To further accelerate the process by inoculating key functional microorganisms, a compost pile composed of tomato stalk with maize straw addition was constructed, and the whole community structure and functions of the dominant were investigated by applying the integrated mata-omics. Results showed that Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Ascomycota dominated and drove the assembly of the co-occurrence network. In the thermophilic stage, Thermobifida was the exclusive degrader of cellulose, and Thermobifida fusca was the most important cellulolytic actinomycete. Saccharomonospora viridis, Planifilum fulgidum, Thermobacillus sp. and the dominant ascomycota of Aspergillus sclerotialis participated in hemicellulose decomposing. In the cooling phase, functional microorganisms became more diverse, with Nocardiopsis flavescens, Glycomyces artemisiae, Glycomyces sambucus, Streptomyces rubrolavendulae and Streptomyces vietnamensis joining the cellulose-degrading rank, and Chaetomium thermophilum emerging as the main hemicellulose degrader. More than two thirds of the bacteria-bacteria interactions and all the fungi-fungi associations were positive, while, both competition (for the same substrate of hemicellulose) and synergy (preference for cellulose and hemicellulose) coexisted in the bacteria-fungi interactions. In conclusion, these findings provide useful information for understanding the biodegradation of tomato plant residues better, and effects of the functional agents identified on composting process should be further studied.

Abstract
Composting involves the selection of a microbiota capable of resisting the high temperatures generated during the process and degrading the lignocellulose. A deep understanding of the thermophilic microbial community involved in such biotransformation is valuable to improve composting efficiency and to provide thermostable biomass-degrading enzymes for biorefinery. This study investigated the lignocellulose-degrading thermophilic microbial culturome at all the stages of plant waste composting, focusing on the dynamics, enzymes, and thermotolerance of each member of such a community. The results revealed that 58% of holocellulose (cellulose plus hemicellulose) and 7% of lignin were degraded at the end of composting. The whole fungal thermophilic population exhibited lignocellulose-degrading activity, whereas roughly 8-10% of thermophilic bacteria had this trait, although exclusively for hemicellulose degradation (xylan-degrading). Because of the prevalence of both groups, their enzymatic activity, and the wide spectrum of thermotolerance, they play a key role in the breakdown of hemicellulose during the entire process, whereas the degradation of cellulose and lignin is restricted to the activity of a few thermophilic fungi that persists at the end of the process. The xylanolytic bacterial isolates (159 strains) included mostly members of Firmicutes (96%) as well as a few representatives of Actinobacteria (2%) and Proteobacteria (2%). The most prevalent species were Bacillus licheniformis and Aeribacillus pallidus. Thermophilic fungi (27 strains) comprised only four species, namely Thermomyces lanuginosus, Talaromyces thermophilus, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Gibellulopsis nigrescens, of whom A. fumigatus and T. lanuginosus dominated. Several strains of the same species evolved distinctly at the stages of composting showing phenotypes with different thermotolerance and new enzyme expression, even not previously described for the species, as a response to the changing composting environment. Strains of Bacillus thermoamylovorans, Geobacillus thermodenitrificans, T. lanuginosus, and A. fumigatus exhibiting considerable enzyme activities were selected as potential candidates for the production of thermozymes. This study lays a foundation to further investigate the mechanisms of adaptation and acquisition of new traits among thermophilic lignocellulolytic microorganisms during composting as well as their potential utility in biotechnological processing.

Abstract
To date, compost maturation monitoring is carried out by physical-chemical and microbiological analysis, which could be considered an overweening consumption of time and products. Nowadays, spectroscopy is chosen as a simple tool for monitoring compost maturity. In the present investigation, spectroscopy analysis was performed in the interest of corroborating the compost maturity. This goal was achieved by using the X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the presence of the cellulose fraction in compost samples. At the same time, the intensity of pics decreased depending on composting time, thus proving that there was organic matter degradation. Infrared and scanning electron microscopy analysis allow for confirming these results. The correlation between spectroscopies analysis and physical-chemical properties was employed by partial least squares-regression (PLS-R) model. PLS-R model was applied to build a model to predict the compost quality depending on the composting time, the results obtained show that all the parameters analysis are well predicted. The current study proposed that final compost was more stabilized compared with the initial feedstock mixture. Ultimately, spectroscopy techniques used allowed us to confirm the physical-chemical results obtained, and both of them depict maturity and stability of the final compost, thus proving that spectral techniques are more reliable, fast, and promising than physical-chemical analyses.

Abstract
Biological control of plant diseases is important in organic greenhouse vegetable production, where fungicide use is limited. Organic producers use microbially diverse substrates, including composts, as media for plant growth. Previous research into the impact of vermicompost on the efficacy of applied biocontrol agents is limited. An in vitro assay was developed to test the efficacy of two biological control agents in a competitive microbial background. Suppression of the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum by Clonostachys rosea f. catenulata (Gliocladium catenulatum strain J1446 [Prestop]) and Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713 (Rhapsody), was assessed on agar media amended with aerated vermicompost tea (ACT). Pathogen growth was reduced more by C. rosea than ACT alone, and C. rosea was equally effective when combined with ACT. In contrast, B. subtilis reduced pathogen growth less than ACT and, when combined, reduced pathogen growth no more than ACT alone. Both biocontrol agents were similarly tested with ACT against F. oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum and Rhizoctonia solani on cucumber and radish. Additive, neutral, and antagonistic responses, depending on host, pathogen, and biocontrol agent, were observed. ACT alone provided more consistent disease suppression on cucumber compared with B. subtilis or C. rosea. In combination, disease suppression was most often better than each biocontrol alone but not better than ACT alone. ACT had antagonistic or additive interactions with C. rosea in the radish/R. solani pathosystem, depending on the experiment. The specific and general suppression of plant diseases by biological control agents in microbially rich environments is variable and warrants further study.

Abstract
Composting has been traditionally considered a process in which a succession of mesophilic and thermophilic microbial populations occurs due to temperature changes. In order to deepen in this model, 1380 bacterial and fungal strains (the entire culturable microbiota isolated from a composting process) were investigated for their ability to grow across a wide range of temperatures (20 to 60 °C). First, qualitative tests were performed to establish a thermal profile for each strain. Then, quantitative tests allowed ascertaining the extent of growth for each strain at each of the tested temperatures. The identity of the isolates enabled to position them taxonomically and permitted tracking the strains throughout the process. Results showed that 90% of the isolates were classified as thermotolerant (they grew at all tested temperatures). Only 9% and 1% of the studied strains showed to be strictly mesophilic or thermophilic, respectively. Firmicutes exhibited the greatest thermal plasticity, followed by Actinobacteria and Ascomycota. Most of the Proteobacteria and all Basidiomycota strains were also able to grow at all the assayed temperatures. Thermotolerance was clearly demonstrated among the composting microbiota, suggesting that the idea of the succession of mesophilic and thermophilic populations throughout the process might need a reassessment.

Abstract
The succession of the fungal community during the co-composting of chicken manure and crop residues and its role in relation to compost maturity was deciphered using Illumina sequencing and FUNGuild (Fungi + Functional + Guild) tool. In the maturation phase of composting, the relative abundance of pathogenic and symbiotrophic fungi decreased by 68%-85% and 145%-622%, respectively, as compared to the initial phase, which showed 574%-720% increase in the saprotrophic guild. The pathogenic and saprotrophic fungi abundance was correlated to compost maturity represented by germination index and humic spectroscopic ratio (p < 0.05). Random forest analysis and structural equation modeling elucidated the positive effects of the aforementioned fungal taxa on compost maturity, and these effects were mediated by the micro-environmental variables, such as temperature, NH4+-N/NO3--N ratio and total organic carbon content. Our study outlines the importance of fungal community succession for improving composting performance and efficiency.

Abstract
The influence of Streptomyces griseorubens JSD-1 on microbial community succession during rice straw composting in an industrial-scale fermenter was assessed by high-throughput sequencing technology. Compared to uninoculated control, JSD-1 inoculation effectively raised composting temperature and improved other maturation indices. JSD-1 inoculation increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria in thermophilic phase and Firmicutes in cooling and maturation phases. At the genus level, JSD-1 inoculation increased the abundance of organic matter degrading bacteria (Virgibacillus) and lignocellulose degrading fungi (Chaetomium and Melanocarpus); while it decreased the abundance of pathogenic fungi (Geosmithia and Acremonium). Moreover, JSD-1 changed microbes that differed significantly and altered the key connecting nodes of microbial community. Organic matter and temperature were the most significant indices that had mutual influences on bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. This study demonstrated that JSD-1 was an effective inoculant on rice straw fast composting in the industrial-scale fermenter.

Abstract
Waste drill cuttings (WDCs), produced during gas and oil drilling consisting of 80% rock cuttings and 20% drilling muds, are an increasingly potent source of environmental pollution. We studied the efficiency of bioaugmentation and phytoremediation to remediate WDCs in an experiment where WDCs were incubated in a greenhouse for 120 days with and without black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) plant and with or without bacterial and fungal consortium inoculant. The pollutant removal rates were highest in inoculated and planted treatment, followed by inoculated treatment and planted treatment. The small decrease in contaminant level in the control treatment suggested that indigenous microorganisms in WDCs had little pollutant degradation capability. In the inoculated and planted treatments, after 120 days, the germination rate of red clover seeds was on the same level as in the natural soil, showing a marked decrease in the ecotoxicity of WDC. Both the bacterial and fungal richness and bacterial diversity increased in all the treatments over time, whereas fungal diversity increased only in the not-inoculated treatments. The activity of laccase enzyme played a key role in the bioremediation process. The enzyme activities were mostly governed by inoculated consortium and soil bacterial community, and black locust affected the bioremediation mainly through its effect on N content that further affected bacterial and fungal communities.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the individual effect of biochemical composition on odor emission potential of biowaste during aerobic biodegradation. Three kinds of typical mixed wastes, including vegetable-fruit waste, garden waste, and protein-rich waste, were tested for emission quantity of seven common odorous families within 21 days of biodegradation under aerobic conditions. The cumulative odor yields (COY) were as follows: protein-rich waste (2408 μg g-1 DM) > vegetable-fruit waste (1169 μg g-1 DM) > garden waste (62 μg g-1 DM), and their cumulative odor intensity were 16,701, 1888, and 212 g-1 DM, respectively. The odor emission of vegetable-fruit waste mainly occurred in the first 3 days, accounting for 91.7% COY, and the predominant contributor to odor intensity (PCOI) were terpenes and sulfur compounds. With regard to garden waste, the odor emission rate was the highest on day 1 (22.4 μg g-1 DM d-1) and then rapidly decreased, and the PCOI were aldehydes. The odor emission rate of protein-rich waste increased gradually in the initial stage and reached the peak value on day 10 (661.9 μg g-1 DM d-1), and its PCOI were sulfur compounds. This study revealed for the first time the relationship between the odor emission potential of biowaste and its characteristic of biochemical composition, then proposed potential application for odor pollution control during aerobic composting.

Abstract
Composting is a complex process in which various micro-organisms, mainly fungi and bacteria, are involved. The process depends on a large number of factors (biological, chemical, and physical) among which microbial populations play a fundamental role. The high temperatures that occur during the composting process indicate the presence of thermotolerant and thermophilic micro-organisms that are key for the optimization of the process. However, the same micro-organisms can be harmful (allergenic, pathogenic) for workers that handle large quantities of material in the plant, and for end users, for example, in the indoor environment (e.g., pots in houses and offices). Accurate knowledge of thermotolerant and thermophilic organisms present during the composting stages is required to find key organisms to improve the process and estimate potential health risks. The objective of the present work was to study thermotolerant and thermophilic mycobiota at different time points of compost maturation. Fungi were isolated at four temperatures (25, 37, 45, and 50 °C) from compost samples collected at five different steps during a 21-day compost-maturation period in an active composting plant in Liguria (northwestern Italy). The samples were subsequently plated on three different media. Our results showed a high presence of fungi with an order of magnitude ranging from 1 × 104 to 3 × 105 colony-forming units (CFU) g−1. The isolated strains, identified by means of specific molecular tools (ITS, beta-tubulin, calmodulin, elongation factor 1-alpha, and LSU sequencing), belonged to 45 different species. Several thermophilic species belonging to genera Thermoascus and Thermomyces were detected, which could be key during composting. Moreover, the presence of several potentially harmful fungal species, such as Aspergillus fumigatus, A. terreus, and Scedosporium apiospermum, were found during the whole process, including the final product. Results highlighted the importance of surveying the mycobiota involved in the composting process in order to: (i) find solutions to improve efficiency and (ii) reduce health risks.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the dynamic change in structure and potential function of bacterial community during dairy manure composting process using high-throughput sequencing and advanced bioinformatics tools. Alpha diversity of microbial community significantly decreased during the thermophilic phase and then recovered gradually. Beta diversity analysis showed unique community structures in different composting phases. Keystone microbes such as genus Corynebacterium, Bacillus, Luteimonas and Nonomuraea were identified for different composting phases. Six functional modules were identified for bacterial community during the composting process using co-occurrence analysis. These modules were significantly associated with temperature, pH, degradation of organic matter and maturation of compost. Predicted metagenomics analysis showed that the relative abundance of amino acid, lipid, energy and xenobiotics metabolism increased during the composting process. These results provide valuable insights into the microbiota during dairy manure composting and how the structures and metabolic functions changed in response to composting phases.

Abstract
The metabolic function and organic degradation behavior of bacterial and fungal communities were detected in 60 days composting of chicken manure and pumice by using Biolog tools, PICRUSt and FUNGuild. Fungal diversity increased from 57 OTUs in fresh chicken manure to 109 OTUs in high temperature stage, while bacterial diversity decreased from 86 OTUs to 44 OTUs after composting treatment. The carbohydrates degradation ability of bacterial community was enhanced in the high temperature stage. Fungal community had relatively higher degradation rates of carboxylic acids and amino acids in the maturation stage. Saprotroph was the main trophic mode of fungal community during the incubation process. The fungal animal pathogen decreased from 12.5% to 1.2% after composting treatment. Bacterial community composition and substrates degradation rate were mainly influenced by redox potential, pH and moisture, while temperature was the main environmental factor influencing on organic degradation of fungal community.

Abstract
Home and community composting are considered potential tools for the self-management of organic waste. The production of added value products from biowaste is an encouraging step further to valorise this waste stream. To increase the profits of homemade compost, this paper presents a strategy to produce enriched home compost with biopesticide properties through a simple and low-cost process. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was inoculated in a home composter bin through a solid inoculum previously prepared using the same waste as substrate. The process was monitored and compared with a home composting control process without inoculation. Final composts were analysed and compared in terms of physicochemical and microbiological properties, respiration and germination indices, indicating the suitability of both to be used as organic amendments. Also, a standardized toxicity test proved that Bt-enriched compost can be safely applied to the soil. Microbiological analysis revealed highly diverse communities in both cases, with limited differences at phylum taxonomic level, but dissimilar relative abundances of species within phylum. Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria were dominant, with the presence of species able to transform organic matter from vegetal origin, but not usually related to compost. Bt-cristal toxin was clearly present in Bt-enriched compost, indicating the coexistence of Bt with the different microbial populations till the end of the composting process. Although Bt has been widely investigated due to its biopesticide properties, the incorporation of this microorganism to home composting level has not been previously reported.

Abstract
Increasing food waste (FW) generation has put significant pressure on the environment and has increased the global financial costs of its appropriate management. Among the traditional organic waste recycling technologies (i.e., incineration, landfilling and anaerobic digestion), composting is an economically feasible and reliable technology for FW recycling regardless of its technical flaws and social issues. The global scenario of FW generation, technical advancement in FW composting and essential nutrient recovery from organic waste with waste recycling are discussed in this article. Recent research on various strategies to improve FW composting, including co-composting, the addition of organic/inorganic additives, the mitigation of gaseous emission, and microbiological variations are comprehensively explained. Subsequently, it is shown that the performing FW composting in an existing mechanical facility can improve organic waste degradation and produce value-added mature compost to save on costs and increase the technological feasibility and viability of FW composting to some extent.

Abstract
The common method for the disposal of olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) has been its accumulation in evaporation ponds where OMW sediments concentrate. Due to the phytotoxic and antimicrobial effect of OMW, leaks from ponds can pollute soils and water bodies. This work focuses on the search for microorganisms that can be used as inocula for bioremediation of polluted matrices in OMW ponds by means of in situ composting. Two fungi isolated from OMW sediments, Aspergillus ochraceus H2 and Scedosporium apiospermum H16, presented suitable capabilities for this use as a consortium. Composting eliminated the phyto- and ecotoxicity of OMW sediments by depleting their main toxic components. Inoculation with the fungal consortium improved the bioremediation efficacy of the technique by hastening the decrease of phytotoxicity and ecotoxicity and enhancing phytostimulant property of compost produced. This procedure constitutes a promising strategy for bioremediation of OMW polluted sites.

Abstract
Metagenomic and transcriptomic techniques applied to composting could increase our understanding of the overall microbial ecology and could help us to optimise operational conditions which are directly related with economic interest. In this study, the fungal diversity and abundance of two-phase olive mill waste ("alperujo") composting was studied using Illumina MiSeq sequencing and quantitative PCR, respectively. The results showed an increase of the fungal diversity during the process, with Ascomycota being the predominant phylum. Penicillium was the main genera identified at the mesophilic and maturation phases, with Debaryomyces and Sarocladium at the thermophilic phase, respectively. The fungal abundance was increased during composting, which confirms their important role during thermophilic and maturation phases. Some Basidiomycota showed an increased during the process, which showed a positive correlation with the humification parameters. According to that, the genus Cystofilobasidium could be used as a potential fungal biomarker to assess alperujo compost maturation.

Abstract
Composting is used widely for recycling spent mushroom substrate (SMS). This study investigated the effects of inoculating a lignocellulose-degrading consortium at two levels comprising 0% (control: CK) and 10% (T) on the fungal community and cellulose-degrading genes during SMS co-composting with swine manure. Lignocellulose degradation rate in T was 8.77-34.45% higher compared with CK. Inoculation affected the distribution of the fungal community, increased the community diversity, and inhibited pathogens. Network analysis showed that inoculation changed the co-occurrence patterns of the fungal communities and made the co-composting system more stable. The relative abundances of glycoside hydrolase genes GH3E (fungal GH3), GH6, and GH7 were 0.45, 0.09, and 0.39 logs higher in T, respectively, than CK. Partial least-squares path modeling suggested that the variations in cellulose-degrading genes were driven mainly by changes in the fungal community during co-composting. Therefore, the lignocellulose-degrading consortium accelerated the transformation of lignocellulose to facilitate safer composting.

Abstract
In the new European Waste Law, composting is proposed as one of the best options to properly manage organic waste of anthropogenic origin. Currently, the massive generation of this type of waste, as well as its heterogeneity, makes difficult in many cases control this process of degradation on an industrial scale. In this work, 15 facilities were selected based on 5 types of organic waste: Urban Solid Waste, Vegetable Waste, Sewage Sludges, Agrifood Waste and "Alpeorujo". The samples were collected in different thermal phases. The results revealed very different physicochemical and enzymatic profiles, as well as different degrees of humification depending on the process and the raw materials. However, parameters such as β-glucosidase, amylase, lignin/holocellulose ratio and humification rate showed similar trends in all cases. All of them could act as important indicators to evaluate the quality of a composting process, despite the heterogeneity of the starting materials.

Abstract
Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) play critical roles in transferring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among different microorganisms in the environment. This study aimed to explore the fate of MGEs during chicken manure (CM) and bovine manure (BM) composting to assess horizontal transfer risks of ARGs. The results showed that the removal efficiency of MGEs during CM composting was significantly higher than that during BM composting, because the potential host bacteria of MGEs were eliminated largely during CM composting. Meanwhile, these potential host bacterial communities are significantly influenced by pH, NH4+, NO3- and total N, which can be used to regulate host bacterial communities to remove MGEs during composting. Projection pursuit regression further confirmed that composting can effectively reduce the horizontal transfer risk of ARGs, especially for CM composting. These results identified the critical roles of host bacterial communities in MGEs removal during composting of different animal manures.

Abstract
In the present study, ectopic fermentation systems were treated with both solid and liquid waste from livestock. Then, the various physicochemical properties and compositions of microbial communities in different waste straws treatments were compared. The addition of thermophilic bacteria was beneficial to the decomposition of litter, and it improved the fermentation process. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were the predominant types in the fermentation vessels, and the presence of the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes was correlated with factors prevailing in the mature phase. Furthermore, pig manure with sawdust, rape stem, and rice chaff and pig manure with sawdust, rice straw, and rice chaff vessels had higher concentrations of dissolved nitrogen, which were conducive to the conversion of fermentation wastes into useful fertilizer. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using rape stem and rice straw as padding materials during the treatment of both liquid and solid livestock waste in ectopic fermentation systems.

Abstract
Degradation of metolachlor in surface soil is extremely important to its potential mobility and overall persistence. In this study, the effects of earthworms (Eisenia fetida) on the degradation of metolachlor at two concentration levels (5 and 20 mg kg-1) in soil were investigated via the column experiment. The degradation kinetics of metolachlor indicate that addition of earthworms enhances metolachlor degradation significantly (P < 0.05), with the enhanced degradation rate of 30% and 63% in the low and high concentration treatments at the 15th day, respectively. Fungi rather than bacteria are primarily responsible for metolachlor degradation in soil, and earthworms stimulate metolachlor degradation mainly by stimulating the metolachlor-degrading functional microorganisms and improving fungal community structure. Earthworms prefer to promote the possible fungal degraders like order Sordariales, Microascales, Hypocreales and Mortierellales and the possible bacteria genus Rubritalea and strengthen the relationships between these primary fungi. Two metabolites metolachlor oxanilic (MOXA) and moetolachlor ethanesulfonic acid (MESA) are detected in soil and earthworms in the high concentration treatments. Earthworms stimulate the formation of MOXA and yet inhibit the formation of MESA in soil. Another metabolite metolachlor-2-hydroxy (M2H) is also detected in earthworms, which is reported firstly. The study provides an important information for the remediation of metolachlor-polluted soil.

Abstract
Aerobic composting is one of the most effective ways to treat biowaste. However, microorganisms, including prokaryotes (i.e. bacteria and archaea) and fungi, are inevitably released from the compost as bioaerosols during biowaste composting. The release pattern of bioaerosols was analyzed during vegetable waste composting through onsite direct sampling of bioaerosol, compost on the pile surface, and compost inside the windrows to have a systematic understanding of the aerosolization behavior of bacteria, archaea, and fungi during composting. A total of six and three dominant microbial phyla were detected in the vegetable compost and aerosol, respectively. The overall aerosolization index of archaea and bacteria was 0-79 and 0-214, respectively, while that of fungi ranged from 0 to 397. The major preferentially aerosolized microorganism phyla included Bacteroidetes (bacteria) and Basidiomycota (fungi). Furthermore, the aerosolization index of bacterial and fungal genera was 0-22,500 and 0-9000, respectively. Seven major preferentially aerosolized bacterial genera, including Brevundimonas, Massilia, Chryseobacterium, Chryseobacterium, Kurthia, Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia, and Acinetobacter were detected with aerosolization indices of 171, 491, 1478, 22,460, 5525, 4014, and 631, respectively. With regard to fungal genera, Cochliobolus, Sclerotinia, and Aspergillus were noted to get easily aerosolized, with maximum aerosolization indices of 7344, 8582, and 439, respectively. The microbial number in the aerosol from composts ranged from 400 to 4800 cell/m3. Besides, more than 90% of easily aerosolized microbial genera were Gram-negative and pathogenic. Thus, the microorganisms released from vegetable compost may have certain detrimental effect on human health.

Abstract
A critical and up-to-date review has been conducted on the latest individual valorization technologies aimed at the generation of value-added by-products from food wastes in the form of bio-fuels, bio-materials, value added components and bio-based adsorbents. The aim is to examine the associated advantages and drawbacks of each technique separately along with the assessment of process parameters affecting the efficiency of the generation of the bio-based products. Challenges faced during the processing of the wastes to each of the bio-products have been explained and future scopes stated. Among the many hurdles encountered in the successful and high yield generation of the bio-products is the complexity and variability in the composition of the food wastes along with the high inherent moisture content. Also, individual technologies have their own process configurations and operating parameters which may affect the yield and composition of the desired end product. All these require extensive study of the composition of the food wastes followed by their effective pre-treatments, judicial selection of the technological parameters and finally optimization of not only the process configurations but also in relation to the input food waste material. Attempt has also been made to address the hurdles faced during the implementation of such technologies on an industrial scale.

Abstract
In this study, the dynamic changes in fungal biodiversity, community structure, fungal associations and functional characteristics were investigated in the biodrying of storage sludge and beer lees by using high throughput sequencing, network and correlation matrix analyses, and FUNGuild database. Additionally, a hypothetical model was provided to better understand the biodrying system. The results showed that fungal diversity decreased after biodrying, while community richness increased in the mesophilic stage and decreased as biodrying progressed. Fungal communities differed in different stages of the biodrying process. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant phyla throughout the biodrying process, while Pichia was the dominant genus in the thermophilic stage. Network and correlation matrix analyses provided useful tools for insight into the fungal interactions, allowing us to propose a conceptual model of how succession in fungal associations regulates the dynamics of biodrying systems. Biodrying treatment had a significant effect on fungal trophic modes, with most pathogenic fungi fading away over the process, illustrating that biodrying is an effective bio-treatment method to eliminate pathogenic fungi. These findings provide information that elucidates the fungal interactions and functional characteristics during the biodrying process.

Abstract
The fungal dynamics and its correlation with physicochemical and gaseous emission were investigated using metagenomics and Heat map illustrator (HEMI). Five different concentrations of wheat straw biochar (WSB) were applied to poultry manure (PM) and composted for 50 days; those without the WSB treatment were used as a control. The results revealed the dominant phyla to be Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, while Batrachochytrium, Rhizophagus, Mucor, and Puccinia were the superior genera. In particular, the diversity of Chytridiomycota and Ascomycota was more abundant among all of the treatments. Overall, the diversity of the fungal species was correspondent, but relative abundance varied significantly among all of the composts. Principle Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) and Non-Metric Multi- Dimensional Scaling (NMDS) indicated that different concentrations of WSB applied treatments have significantly distinct fungal communities. In addition, correlation analyses of fungal interactions with environmental elements via HEMI also indicate a clear difference among the treatments. Ultimately, the relative abundance of fungal composition significantly influenced the PM compost treated by the WSB.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the fungal community succession and variations in chicken manure (CM) compost with different concentration of bamboo biochar (BB) as additive via the using of metagenomics method. The consequent obviously revealed that Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant phylum, while Batrachochytrium, Funneliformis, Mucor, Phizophagus and Pyronema were the pre-dominant genera in each treatment. Redundancy analyses indicated that higher dosage of biochar applied treatments has significant correlation between fungal communities and environmental factors. The diversity of fungal community was analogous but the relative abundance (RA) was inconsistent among the all treatments. In addition, the principal component analysis was also confirmed that T5 and T6 treatments have considerably correlation than other treatments. However, the mean value of RA remained maximum in higher dosage of biochar blended treatments. Ultimately, the RA of different fungal genus and species were influenced in CM compost by the BB amendment.

Abstract
Pharmaceuticals (PhCs) are organic contaminants that have been detected in wastewater, surface water, and soils throughout the world. The presence of 10 commonly used PhCs in Spain (azithromycin, benzylpenicillin, citalopram, fluconazole, fluoxetine, ibuprofen, irbesartan, olanzapine, telmisartan, and venlafaxine) was analysed at four wastewater treatment plants, and the changes in their concentrations during treatment were assessed. Although certain some PhCs were degraded in the treated water, their presence in sewage sludge increased in all cases. The sewage sludge was composted using rice straw to degrade the PhCs, and the composting efficiency was modified by changes in the relative C/N ratio of the composting blend. Using a simple microbiological culture process for enrichment, 11 different strains of microorganisms that degraded specific PhCs were identified. Ibuprofen and azithromycin were metabolized by one and four strains, respectively, and both PhCs were used as a carbon source; in addition, six strains used irbesartan as a nitrogen source.

Abstract
Illumina MiSeq sequencing and phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) were applied to study the dynamic changes and effects of microbial community structures as well as the metabolic function of bacterial community in maize straw composting process. Results showed that humic acid contents in loosely combined humus (HA1) and stably combined humus (HA2) increased after composting and Staphylococcus, Cellulosimicrobium and Ochrobactrum possibly participated in the transformation of the process. The bacterial communities differed in different stages of the composting. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria were reported the dominant phyla throughout the process and the relative abundance of the dominant phyla varied significantly (p < 0.05) over time. Moreover, the total phosphorus (TP) had the greatest influence on the microbial community structure among C/N ratio, available phosphorus (AP) and humic substances. Metabolism, cellular processes and environmental information processing might be the primary functions of microbial community during the composting.

Abstract
In this study, dynamic changes in fungal communities, trophic modes and effect factors in 60 days composting of cow manure were analyzed by using high throughput sequencing, FUNGuild and Biolog FF MicroPlate, respectively. Orpinomyces (relative abundance >10.85%) predominated in feedstock, and Mycothermus became the dominating genus (relative abundance >75%) during the active phase. Aerobic composting treatment had a significant effect on fungal trophic modes with pathogenic fungi fading away and wood saprotrophs increasing over composting time. Fungal communities had the higher carbon sources utilization capabilities at the thermophilic phase and mature phase than those in the other periods. Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) significantly increased from -180 to 180 mV during the treatment. Redundancy analysis showed that the succession of fungal community during composting had a significant association with ORP (p < .05). This indicated that aerobic composting treatment not only influenced fungal community structure, but also changed fungal trophic modes and metabolic characteristics.
