The bacterial community structure of submerged membrane bioreactor treating synthetic hospital wastewater

Machine learning coupled with causal inference to identify COVID-19 related chemicals that pose a high concern to drinking water

Various synthetic substances were utilized in large quantities during the recent coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Some of these chemicals could potentially enter drinking water sources. Persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) substances have been recognized as a threat to drinking water resources. It has not yet been assessed how many COVID-19 related substances could be considered PMT substances. One reason is the lack of high-quality experimental data for the identification of PMT substances. To solve this problem, we applied a machine learning model to identify the PMT substances among COVID-19 related chemicals. The optimal model achieved an accuracy of 90.6% based on external test data. The model interpretation and causal inference indicated that our approach understood causation between PMT properties and molecular descriptors. Notably, the screening results showed that over 60% of the COVID-19 chemicals considered are candidate PMT substances, which should be prioritized to prevent undue pollution of water resources.

Investigating the biodegradability of iodinated X-ray contrast media in simultaneous nitrification and denitrification system

The present study investigated the biodegradation of three iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM), namely, iopamidol, iohexol, and iopromide, in simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) system maintained in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results showed that variable aeration patterns (anoxic-aerobic-anoxic) and micro-aerobic condition were most effective in the biotransformation of ICM while achieving organic carbon and nitrogen removal. The highest removal efficiencies of iopamidol, iohexol, and iopromide were 48.24%, 47.75%, and 57.46%, respectively, in micro-aerobic condition. Iopamidol was highly resistant to biodegradation and possessed the lowest K_bio value, followed by iohexol and iopromide, regardless of operating conditions. The removal of iopamidol and iopromide was affected by the inhibition of nitrifiers. The transformation products after hydroxylation, dehydrogenation, and deiodination of ICM were detected in the treated effluent. Due to the addition of ICM, the abundance of denitrifier genera Rhodobacter and Unclassified Comamonadaceae increased, and the abundance of class TM7-3 decreased. The presence of ICM affected the microbial dynamics, and the diversity of microbes in SND resulted in improving the biodegradability of the compounds.

Fate and removal of iodinated X-ray contrast media in membrane bioreactor: Microbial dynamics and effects of different operational parameters

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) are mainly used in medical sector, and their presence in environmental waters is a cause of concern as they are capable of forming highly toxic iodinated disinfection byproducts. In the present study, the removal mechanisms of the three ICM- iohexol, iopromide, and iopamidol were elucidated in a lab-scale aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR). At steady-state operation (solids retention time (SRT)- 70 days, organic loading rate (OLR)- 0.80 KgCOD/m³-day, nitrogen loading rate (NLR)- 0.08 KgNH₄-N/m³-day, hydraulic retention time (HRT)- 12 h), the average removal of iohexol and iopromide was found to be 34.9 and 45.2 %, respectively, whereas iopamidol proved to be highly recalcitrant in aerobic conditions of the MBR (removal <10 % in all phases of the MBR operation). Further, through batch kinetic studies and mass balance analysis, it was observed that ICM were primarily biotransformed in the MBR system and biosorption (K_d < 10 L/Kg) was negligible. The biodegradation rate coefficient values (K_biol) of the ICM were found to be <0.65 L/g-d which indicate that biotransformation rate of ICM was slow. Increased OLR (1.60 KgCOD/m³-day) and reduced SRT (20 days) were found to negatively affect the removal of the ICM. Further, the removal of ICM was found to depend on its initial concentration, and the increment in the ammonium loading (0.16 KgNH₄-N/m³-day) did not favor its removal. The dosing of ICM altered the microbial dynamics of the mixed liquor and reduced the microbial diversity and richness. Bdellovibrio, Zoogloea, and bacteria belonging to TM7-3 class, Cryomorphaceae and Hyphomonadaceae families may contribute in ICM biotransformation.

Selective enrichment, identification, and isolation of diclofenac, ibuprofen, and carbamazepine degrading bacteria from a groundwater biofilm

Diclofenac, ibuprofen, and carbamazepine are three of the most widely detected and most concerning pharmaceutical residues in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to identify bacteria that may be involved in their degradation from a bacterial biofilm. Selective enrichment cultures in mineral salt solution containing pharmaceutical compounds as sole source of carbon and energy were set up, and population dynamics were monitored using shotgun metagenome sequencing. Bacterial genomes were reconstructed using genome-resolved metagenomics. Thirty bacterial isolates were obtained, identified at species level, and tested regarding pharmaceutical biodegradation at an initial concentration of 1.5 mg l-1. The results indicated that most probably diclofenac biodegrading cultures consisted of members of genera Ferrovibrio, Hydrocarboniphaga, Zavarzinia, and Sphingopyxis, while in ibuprofen biodegradation Nocardioides and Starkeya, and in carbamazepine biodegradation Nocardioides, Pseudonocardia, and Sphingopyxis might be involved. During the enrichments, compared to the initial state the percentage relative abundance of these genera increased up to three orders of magnitude. Except Starkeya, the genomes of these bacteria were reconstructed and annotated. Metabolic analyses of the annotated genomes indicated that these bacteria harbored genes associated with pharmaceutical biodegradation. Stenotrophomonas humi DIC_5 and Rhizobium daejeonense IBU_18 isolates eliminated diclofenac and ibuprofen during the tests in the presence of either glucose (3 g l-1) or in R2A broth. Higher than 90% concentration reduction was observed in the case of both compounds.

Changes in the composition of bacterial communities and pathogen levels during wastewater treatment

Wastewater treatment plants have been described as a potential source of spreading pathogens to the receiving water. However, few studies are reporting the presence and concentration changes of pathogens in these matrices. High-throughput sequencing provides new insights into understanding the changes of bacterial communities throughout wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, the changes in microbial community composition and the levels of representative pathogens of effluents during the wastewater treatment process in two municipal WWTPs (A and B) were analyzed using Illumina NovaSeq sequencing and qPCR. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum in all samples, accounting for 45.0-75.2% of the bacterial community, followed by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Nitrospirae. A slight difference was observed between the bacterial community compositions of WWTPs A and B. However, a significant difference in the community compositions of effluent samples at different treatment stages was observed. Nutrients had a more substantial impact on bacterial community composition than physicochemical factors. Most human-associated Bacteroides and Mycobacterium were eliminated during the wastewater treatment process in both WWTPs. The bacterial community richness in WWTP A was significantly higher than that in WWTP B. The results of this study will provide insights into the potential problems that exist in WWTPs. In turn, these insights can enable the efficient and stable operation of WWTPs and help prevent the spread of pathogens.

Impact of Voltage Application on Degradation of Biorefractory Pharmaceuticals in an Anaerobic-Aerobic Coupled Upflow Bioelectrochemical Reactor

Diclofenac, ibuprofen, and carbamazepine are frequently detected in the environment, where they pose a threat to organisms and ecosystems. We developed anaerobic-aerobic coupled upflow bioelectrochemical reactors (AO-UBERs) with different voltages, hydraulic retention times (HRTs), and types of electrode conversion, and evaluated the ability of the AO-UBERs to remove the three pharmaceuticals. This study showed that when a voltage of 0.6 V was applied, the removal rate of ibuprofen was slightly higher in the system with aerobic cathodic and anaerobic anodic chambers (60.2 ± 11.0%) with HRT of 48 h than in the control systems, and the removal efficiency reached stability faster. Diclofenac removal was 100% in the 1.2 V system with aerobic anodic and anaerobic cathodic chambers, which was greater than in the control system (65.5 ± 2.0%). The contribution of the aerobic cathodic-anodic chambers to the removal of ibuprofen and diclofenac was higher than that of the anaerobic cathodic-anodic chambers. Electrical stimulation barely facilitated the attenuation of carbamazepine. Furthermore, biodegradation-related species (Methyloversatilis, SM1A02, Sporomusa, and Terrimicrobium) were enriched in the AO-UBERs, enhancing pharmaceutical removal. The current study sheds fresh light on the interactions of bacterial populations with the removal of pharmaceuticals in a coupled system.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors for pharmaceutical-laden wastewater treatment: A critical review

Pharmaceuticalsare a diverse group of chemical compounds widely used for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in both humans and animals. Pharmaceuticals, either in their original or metabolite form, find way into the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from different sources. Recently, anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) has received significant research attention for the treatment of pharmaceuticals in various wastewater streams. This review critically examines the behaviour and removal of a wide array of pharmaceuticals in AnMBR with primary focus on their removal efficiencies and mechanisms, critical influencing factors, and the microbial community structures. Subsequently, the inhibitory effects of pharmaceuticals on the performance of AnMBR and membrane fouling are critically discussed. Furthermore, the imperative role of membrane biofouling layer and its components in pharmaceuticals removal is highlighted. Finally, recent advancements in AnMBR configurations for membrane fouling control and enhanced pharmaceuticals removal are systemically discussed.

Research on removal of fluoroquinolones in rural domestic wastewater by vertical flow constructed wetlands under different hydraulic loads

Antibiotics had attracted more and more attention in recent years due to their harmfulness. Fluoroquinolones (FQs), one class of antibiotics widely used in human and veterinary medicine, were found in various water bodies in China. Therefore, in order to found an efficient method for removing FQs in rural domestic wastewater and optimize the process parameters, ceramsite and soil were applied in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) to study the effects of different hydraulic loads and different substrates on the removal of FQs and conventional pollutants. The results showed the VFCW-D filled with 45 cm soil layer and 15 cm ceramasite layer had the highest removal efficiency of conventional pollutants and FQs under low hydraulic load. Nevertheless, the removal efficiency of conventional pollutants was significantly declined for the VFCWs which contained soil substrates under high hydraulic load due to the soil pores were clogged by the accumulation of organic matter. Finally, VFCW-A filled with 60 cm ceramasite layer revealed good ability to remove conventional pollutants and FQs under high hydraulic load. Deinococcus played a vital role here due to its excellent removal effect on conventional pollutants. The microbial composition in the substrate changed greatly after adding antibiotics under high hydraulic load. Devosia, Pseudorhodoferax, Cellvibrio, Bosea, Caulobacter, Acinetobacter, Zoogloea, Arcobacter, Dechloromonas, Flavobacterium, Nakamurella, Chloroplast, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Pelosinus, UTCFX1 and Hypnocyclicus became the new dominated genera and were essential to remove pollutants. In summary, VFCW was an effective system to remove fluoroquinolones in rural domestic wastewater.

A novel and affordable bioaugmentation strategy with microbial extracts to accelerate the biodegradation of emerging contaminants in different media

This study describes a new bioaugmentation alternative based on the application of aqueous aerated extracts from a biomixture acclimated with ibuprofen, diclofenac and triclosan. This bioaugmentation strategy was assayed in biopurification systems (BPS) and in contaminated aqueous solutions to accelerate the removal of these emerging contaminants. Sterilized extracts or extracts from the initial uncontaminated biomixture were used as controls. In BPS, the dissipation of 90% of diclofenac and triclosan required, respectively, 60 and 108 days less than in the controls. The metabolite methyl-triclosan was determined at levels 12 times lower than in controls. In the bioaugmented solutions, ibuprofen was almost completely eliminated (99%) in 21 days and its hydroxylated metabolites were also determined to be at lower levels than in the controls. The plasmidome of acclimated biomixtures and its extract appeared to maintain certain types of plasmids but degradation related genes became less evident. Several dominant OTUs found in the extract identified as Flavobacterium and Fluviicola of the phylum Bacteroidetes, Thermomicrobia (phylum Chloroflexi) and Nonomuraea (phylum Actinobacteria), may be responsible for the enhanced dissipation of these contaminants. This bioaugmentation strategy represents an advantageous tool to facilitate in situ bioaugmentation.

Effects of pharmaceuticals on membrane bioreactor: Review on membrane fouling mechanisms and fouling control strategies

Pharmaceuticals have become contaminants of emerging concern due to their toxicity towards aquatic life and pseudo persistent nature in the environment. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is one such technology that has the potential to act as a barrier against the release of pharmaceuticals into the environment. Fouling is the deposition of the constituents of the mixed liquor on the membrane surface and it limit the world-wide applicability of MBRs. To remove foulant layer, aggressive chemicals and extra cost consideration in terms of energy are required. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) are recognized as principal foulants. Presence of pharmaceuticals has been found to increase the fouling in MBRs. Fouling aggravates in proportion to the concentration of pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals exert chemical stress in microbes, hence forcing them to secrete more EPS/SMP. Pharmaceuticals alter the composition of the foulants and affect microbial metabolism, thereby inflicting direct/indirect effects on fouling. Pharmaceuticals have been found to increase or decrease the size of sludge flocs, however the exact mechanism that govern the floc size change is yet to be understood. Different techniques such as coupling advanced oxidation processes with MBR, adding activated carbon, bioaugmenting MBR with quorum quenching strains have shown to reduce fouling in MBRs treating pharmaceutical wastewater. These fouling mitigation techniques work on reducing the EPS/SMP concentration, thereby alleviating fouling. The present review provides a comprehensive understanding of the effects induced by pharmaceuticals in the activated sludge characteristics and identifying the fouling mechanism. Furthermore, significant knowledge gaps and recent advances in fouling mitigation strategies are discussed. This review has also made an effort to highlight the positive aspect of the foulant layer in retaining pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance genes, thereby suggesting a possible delicate trade-off between the flux decline and enhanced removal of pharmaceuticals.

Comparison of pharmaceutical removal in two membrane bioreactors with/without powdered activated carbon addition

The present study investigates the removal of six selected pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater in two membrane bioreactors (MBRs) with and without powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition. Two approaches were carried out for obtaining different carbon dosages related to the influent: (1) with a fixed solids retention time (SRT) and varying PAC concentrations; (2) with varying SRTs and a fixed PAC concentration. The results reveal that a PAC dosage related to influent of 21 mg L⁻¹ and SRT of 20 d are optimal. The first approach achieved a better removal performance than the second. The removal of amidotrizoic acid (up to 46%), bezafibrate (>92%) and iopromide (around 85%) were mainly caused by biological process, but were also enhanced by PAC addition. Efficient removal (>95%) of sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine and diclofenac were highly dependent on the PAC dosage. However, carbamazepine shows re-metabolization properties during biological processing. Decreasing the SRT as done in the second approach, not only increased the PAC amount, but also decreased the mass of activated sludge and reduced the capability to degrade complex organic matter. Consequently, biodegradability and adsorbability played decisive roles in the removal of each compound.

Selective acceleration of 2-hydroxyl pyridine mono-oxygenation using specially acclimated biomass

Biodegradation of pyridine starts with two mono-oxygenation reactions, and 2-hydroxyl pyridine (2-HP) accumulates as pyridine is mono-oxygenated in the first reaction. The accumulation of 2-HP inhibits both initial reactions. Therefore, selective acceleration of the second mono-oxygenation reaction should significantly enhance pyridine transformation and mineralization. Activated-sludge biomass was separately acclimated with pyridine or 2-HP to produce pyridine- and 2-HP-acclimated biomasses. The pyridine-acclimated biomass was superior for pyridine biodegradation, but the 2-HP-acclimated biomass was superior for 2-HP biodegradation. As a consequence, the pyridine-acclimated biomass by itself achieved faster mono-oxygenation of pyridine to 2-HP, but 2-HP accumulated, which limited mineralization to 60%. In contrast, mineralization reached 90% when one-third of the pyridine-acclimated was replaced with 2-HP-acclimated biomass, because 2-HP did not accumulate during pyridine biodegradation. The lack of 2-HP accumulation relieved its inhibition: e.g., the pyridine removal rates, normalized to the mass of pyridine-acclimated biomass, increased from 0.52 to 0.57 mM^0.5⋅h^-1 when one-third of the pyridine-acclimated biomass was replaced by 2-HP-acclimated biomass. Phylogenetic analysis showed that microbiological communities of pyridine-acclimated biomass and 2-HP-acclimated biomass differed in important ways. On the one hand, the 2-HP-acclimated biomass was richer and dominated by a rare biosphere, or genera having <0.1% of total reads. On the other hand, the most-enriched genus in the pyridine-acclimated community (Methylibium) is associated with the first mono-oxygenation of pyridine, while enriched genera in the 2-HP-acclimated community (Sediminibacterium and Dokdonella) are associated with the second mono-oxygenation of pyridine.

Effect of prolonged sludge retention times on the performance of membrane bioreactor and microbial community for leachate treatment under restricted aeration

Leachate treatment is challenging owing to the complex composition of pollutants. This study investigated the treatment performance of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) and the microbial community structure corresponding to the effect of prolonged sludge retention times (SRTs) under restricted aeration. In the present study, a pilot-scale MBR was designed to treat leachate after being pretreated with an anaerobic filter for continuous operation for 240 days. The experimental results showed that removal performance of over 90% was achieved for biochemical oxygen demand, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonia-nitrogen, and suspended solids when the MBR was operated at SRTs of 150-300 days. The results on microbial communities revealed that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria were the major phyla. Furthermore, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria belonging to Nitrosomonadaceae were considered to play a vital role in the ammonia-nitrogen removal. A high abundance of Rhizobiales was detected on the biofilm of the membrane, which could be the key driver of bio-fouling. The dynamic changes in the microbial community indicate steady performance of MBR and can act as an indicator of membrane bio-fouling. The results of our study highlight that MBR can be viably operated in long SRTs under restricted aeration for leachate treatment with technical, economic, and environmental feasibility for resource recovery.

Taxonomic and Functional Distribution of Bacterial Communities in Domestic and Hospital Wastewater System: Implications for Public and Environmental Health

The discharge of untreated hospital and domestic wastewater into receiving water bodies is still a prevalent practice in developing countries. Unfortunately, because of an ever-increasing population of people who are perennially under medication, these wastewaters contain residues of antibiotics and other antimicrobials as well as microbial shedding, the direct and indirect effects of which include the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes and an increase in the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose a threat to public and environmental health. This study assessed the taxonomic and functional profiles of bacterial communities, as well as the antibiotic concentrations in untreated domestic wastewater (DWW) and hospital wastewater (HWW), using high-throughput sequencing analysis and solid-phase extraction coupled to Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) analysis, respectively. The physicochemical qualities of both wastewater systems were also determined. The mean concentration of antibiotics and the concentrations of Cl⁻, F⁻ and PO₄³ were higher in HWW samples than in DWW samples. The phylum Firmicutes was dominant in DWW with a sequence coverage of 59.61% while Proteobacteria was dominant in HWW samples with a sequence coverage of 86.32%. At genus level, the genus Exiguobacterium (20.65%) and Roseomonas (67.41%) were predominant in DWW and HWW samples, respectively. Several pathogenic or opportunistic bacterial genera were detected in HWW (Enterococcus, Pseudomonas and Vibrio) and DWW (Clostridium, Klebsiella, Corynebacterium, Bordetella, Staphylocccus and Rhodococcus) samples. Functional prediction analysis indicated the presence of beta-lactam resistance, cationic antimicrobial peptide (CAMP) resistance and vancomycin resistance genes in HWW samples. The presence of these antibiotic resistance genes and cassettes were positively correlated with the presence of pathogens. These findings show the risk posed to public and environmental health by the discharge of untreated domestic and hospital wastewaters into environmental water bodies.

Total and Metabolically Active Microbial Community of Aerobic Granular Sludge Systems Operated in Sequential Batch Reactors: Effect of Pharmaceutical Compounds

Two aerobic granular sludge (AGS) sequential batch reactors were operated at a mild (15 °C) temperature for 180 days. One of those bioreactors was exposed to a mixture of diclofenac, naproxen, trimethoprim, and carbamazepine. The AGS system, operating under pressure from emerging contaminants, showed a decrease in COD, BOD5, and TN removal capacity, mainly observed during the first 100 days, in comparison with the removal ratios detected in the control bioreactor. After an acclimatisation period, the removal reached high-quality effluent for COD and TN, close to 95% and 90%, respectively. In the steady-state period, trimethoprim and diclofenac were successfully removed with values around 50%, while carbamazepine and naproxen were more recalcitrant. The dominant bacterial OTUs were affected by the presence of a mixture of pharmaceutical compounds, under which the dominant phylotypes changed to OTUs classified among the Pseudomonas, Gemmobacter, and Comamonadaceae. The RT-qPCR and qPCR results showed the deep effects of pharmaceutical compounds on the number of copies of target genes. Statistical analyses allowed for linking the total and active microbial communities with the physico-chemical performance, describing the effects of pharmaceutical compounds in pollution degradation, as well as the successful adaptation of the system to treat wastewater in the presence of toxic compounds.

Degradation mechanism of Ibuprofen via a forward osmosis membrane bioreactor

Ibuprofen (IBU) is a non-steroidal drug that is classified as a trace organic compound (TrOC). A forward osmosis membrane bioreactor (FOMBR) has traditionally been a favored technology for wastewater treatment. In this study, the IBU degradation mechanism was clarified using an FOMBR. The results indicated that the average removal efficiencies of contaminants were greater than 96.32%. The ultra-performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF-MS) results demonstrated that there were 10 intermediates and 5 possible pathways during the IBU degradation. Decarboxylation and hydroxylation may be the primary pathways of IBU degradation. The microbial results illustrated that Proteobacteria was dominant and of utmost importance in the degradation process. Thauera and Azoarcus were the dominant genera that participated in contaminant degradation.

Acclimatization of microbial community of submerged membrane bioreactor treating hospital wastewater

This study was performed to understand the dynamics of the microbial community of submerged membrane bioreactor during the acclimatization process to treat the hospital wastewater. In this regard, three acclimatization phases were examined using a mixture of synthetic wastewater (SWW) and real hospital wastewater (HWW) in the following proportions; In Phase 1: 75:25 v/v (SWW: HWW); Phase 2: 50:50 v/v (SWW: HWW); and Phase 3: 25:75 v/v (SWW: HWW) of wastewater. The microbial community was analyzed using Illumina high throughput sequencing to identify the bacterial and micro-eukaryotes community in SMBR. The acclimatization study clearly demonstrated that shift in microbial community composition with time. The dominance of pathogenic and degrading bacterial communities such as Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Zoogloea was observed at the phase 3 of acclimatization. This study witnessed the major shift in the micro-eukaryotes community, and the proliferation of fungi Basidiomycota was observed in phase 3 of acclimatization.

Phytoremediation of pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater: Insights into rhizobacterial dynamics related to pollutant degradation mechanisms during plant life cycle

Rhizobacterial dynamics, relating to pollutant degradation mechanisms, over the course of plant lifespan have rarely been reported when using phytoremediation technologies for pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater treatment. This study investigated the rhizobacterial dynamics of Typha angustifolia in constructed wetlands to treat ibuprofen (IBP)-polluted wastewater throughout plant development from seedling, vegetative, bolting, mature, to senescent stages. It was found that conventional pollutant and IBP removals increased with plant development, reaching to the best performance at bolting or mature stage (removal efficiencies: 92% organics, 52% ammonia, 60% phosphorus and 76% IBP). In the IBP-stressed wetlands, the rhizobacterial diversity during plant development was adversely affected by IBP accompanied with a reduced evenness. The bacterial communities changed dynamically at different developmental stages and showed significant differences compared to the control wetlands (free of IBP). The dominant bacteria colonized in the rhizosphere was the phylum Actinobacteria, having a final relative abundance of 0.79 and containing a large amount of genus norank_o__PeM15. Positive interactions were evident among the rhizobacteria in IBP-stressed wetlands and the predicted functions of 16S rRNA genes revealed the potential co-metabolism and metabolism of IBP. The co-metabolism of IBP might be related to root exudates such as amino acid, lipid, fatty acid and organic acid. In addition, positive correlations between the organic compounds of interstitial water (bulk environment) and the rhizobacterial communities were observed in IBP-stressed wetlands, which suggests that the influence of IBP on bulk microbiome might be able to modulate rhizosphere microbiome to achieve the degradation of IBP via co-metabolism or metabolism.

Linking microbial diversity and population dynamics to the removal efficiency of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in an anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) system

The removal efficiencies (REs) of nineteen pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) (six antibiotics-clarithromycin, ofloxacin, sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim -, four β-blockers -atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol and sotalol-, two antihypertensives/diuretics -furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide-, three lipid regulators -bezafibrate, fenofibrate and gemfibrozil-, and four psychiatric medications -carbamazepine, diazepam, lorazepam and paroxetine) were ascertained in a pilot-scale anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A²O) system treating urban wastewater, long term operated during two experimental phases using different sets of environmental conditions and operating parameters. Illumina MiSeq sequencing was used to investigate the structure, diversity and population dynamics of bacteria, archaea and fungi communities in the activated sludge. The results showed that mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and food-to-microorganisms ratio (F/M) were operational parameters significantly influencing the REs of five of the analyzed PhACs in the A²O system. Biota-environment (BIO-ENV) analysis revealed strong correlations between population shifts of the activated sludge community and the REs of PhACs of the different pharmaceutical families. Increased REs of clarithromycin, furosemide, bezafibrate and gemfibrozil were concomitant to higher relative abundances of bacterial phylotypes classified within the Rhodobacteraceae and Sphingomonadaceae (Alphaproteobacteria), while those of Betaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Methanomethylovorans (Euryarchaea) correlated positively with the REs of up to seven PhACs belonging to different therapeutic groups.
