Highly efficient removal of aqueous phosphate via iron-manganese fabricated biochar: Performance and mechanism

Biochar (BC) has emerged as a potential solution to phosphate removal from wastewater primarily resulting from global overuse of fertilizers. Further modification by embedment of iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxides on BC can enhance phosphate removal; however, the modification method serves as a vital factor underlying distinctive removal performances and mechanisms, which have yet been systematically examined. Herein, two Fe-Mn modified BC, Fe/MnBC (comprised of Fe3O4 and MnO2) and Fe-MnBC (comprised of MnFe2O4), were comprehensively investigated for gaining insights into the unsolved perspectives. The results indicated that Fe-MnBC exhibited a markedly greater maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 135.88 mg g-1 than that of Fe/MnBC with 17.93 mg g-1. The comparative results based on microstructure and spectroscopic analyses suggested that different Fe and Mn oxides were successfully loaded, which played a distinctive role in phosphate removal. Further characterizations unveiled that the key mechanisms for phosphate removal by Fe/MnBC are inner-sphere complexation and precipitation, while electrostatic interaction and outer-sphere complexation are the dominant mechanisms underlying the notable performance of Fe-MnBC. The delicately designed Fe-MnBC with special structure and property also enabled a superior regeneration capacity, which presented a promisingly high phosphate removal efficacy of over 81.34% after five cycles. These results enhance comprehension regarding the impact of biochar modification techniques on phosphate removal, offering positive indications for the remediation of excessive phosphate and other pollutant-containing water through feasible design and green chemicals.

Enhanced simultaneous removal of phosphate and ammonium from swine wastewater using magnetic magnesium-loaded Chinese herbal medicine residues: Performance, mechanism, and resource utilization

Magnetic magnesium (Mg)-loaded Chinese herbal medicine residues (MM-TCMRs) were fabricated to simultaneously remove and recover phosphate and ammonium from wastewater. The MM-TCMRs exhibited larger specific surfaces and rougher structures with massive spherical particles than those of original residues. They could be separated by adjusting the magnetic field. The phosphate and ammonium adsorption by MM-TCMRs were matched with the pseudo-second-order model, while the Langmuir model yielded the maximum adsorption capacities of 635.35 and 615.57 mg g-1, respectively. Struvite precipitation on the MM-TCMRs surface was the primary removal mechanism with electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, intra-particle diffusion, and ion exchange also involved. The recyclability of MM-TCMRs confirmed their good structural stability. More importantly, the nutrient-loaded MM-TCMRs enhanced alfalfa growth and improved soil fertility in planting experiments. Collectively, the MM-TCMRs are promising candidates for nutrient removal and recovery from wastewater.

Optimization of the adsorption performance of herbal residues as lanthanide ion-modified carriers for phosphate by fly ash and its application

In order to mitigate the harmful effects of eutrophication in water bodies, the applications of lanthanum-modified materials for phosphate removal from wastewater have attracted much attention. Unlike conventional adsorbents, plant wastes usually have poor adsorption abilities and are difficult to be reused for desorption of phosphate due to their small pore sizes and ununiform loading of modified ions. In this paper, a composite adsorbent (LC-MM) was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of waste traditional Chinese medical materials (MMs) with load of lanthanum carbonate and co-heating treatment with coal fly ash (CFA), which was applied to remove phosphate from water. The results showed that maximum adsorption capacity of LC-MM was 52 mg g-1, and the LC-MM showed appreciable adsorption capacity of phosphate for agricultural wastewater in the presence of complex interfering ions and for urban surface waters with low phosphate concentrations. Five adsorption-desorption cycles showed good reusability. The mechanism study showed that the La3+ ions were more uniformly distributed on the surface of the absorbents with the introduction of Fe3+, Al3+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in CFA. The ligand exchange between phosphate and carbonate, the internal spherical complexation formed by lanthanum ion and phosphate, and surface chemical precipitation attachment are the main reasons why the adsorption capacity of LC-MM approached or even surpassed that of conventional lanthanum-modified adsorbents. In conclusions, this work proposed an effective method for the modification of plant materials.

Greywater treatment in SBR-SND reactor - optimization of hydraulic retention time, volumetric exchange ratio and sludge retention time

In this study, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification-sequencing batch reactor (SND-SBR) process was investigated to treat greywater. The effect of three process parameters, including hydraulic retention time (HRT), volumetric exchange ratio (VER) and sludge retention time (SRT), was optimised using a 23 full factorial design. The statistic model was developed for two response variables, i.e. chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia (NH3-N) removal. The optimum conditions were 6.8 h HRT (anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic: 1.77 h/2.77 h/2.27 h), 0.7 VER and 7.94 d SRT, which resulted in 93.9% COD and 84.6% NH3-N removal efficiency. SRT was the most significant factor, followed by HRT and VER for COD and NH3-N removal. The interaction effect of VER and SRT was significant in COD removal. On the other hand, the interaction effects of HRT-VER and HRT-SRT were significant in NH3-N removal. The removal efficiencies of 89.6 ± 1.1% and 83.7 ± 2.3% were observed for TKN and TN, respectively, in the optimised SND-SBR system. NH3-N removal was obtained via nitrate pathway in the SND-SBR system. The PO43--P removal of 74.2 ± 3.4% was obtained via aerobic phosphorus uptake and post anoxic denitrification at the optimal condition. To enhance PO43--P removal, adsorption (using corn cob adsorbent) was integrated with SBR by adding the optimum adsorbent dose (0.5 g/L). The PO43--P removal efficiency in the SBR-adsorption system was found to be 80 ± 1.5%. The biodegradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) was also carried out in the SND-SBR system, and the results showed removal rate of 58.9 ± 2.3% benzophenone-3 (BP) and 80.1 ± 2.2% anionic surfactant (AS).

Detection and removal technologies for ammonium and antibiotics in agricultural wastewater: Recent advances and prospective

With the extensive development of industrial livestock and poultry production, a considerable part of agricultural wastewater containing tremendous ammonium and antibiotics have been indiscriminately released into the aquatic systems, causing serious harms to ecosystem and human health. In this review, ammonium detection technologies, including spectroscopy and fluorescence methods, and sensors were systematically summarized. Antibiotics analysis methodologies were critically reviewed, including chromatographic methods coupled with mass spectrometry, electrochemical sensors, fluorescence sensors, and biosensors. Current progress in remediation methods for ammonium removal were discussed and analyzed, including chemical precipitation, breakpoint chlorination, air stripping, reverse osmosis, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biological methods. Antibiotics removal approaches were comprehensively reviewed, including physical, AOPs, and biological processes. Furthermore, the simultaneous removal strategies for ammonium and antibiotics were reviewed and discussed, including physical adsorption processes, AOPs, biological processes. Finally, research gaps and the future perspectives were discussed. Through conducting comprehensive review, future research priorities include: (1) to improve the stabilities and adaptabilities of detection and analysis techniques for ammonium and antibiotics, (2) to develop innovative, efficient, and low cost approaches for simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics, and (3) to explore the underlying mechanisms that governs the simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics. This review could facilitate the evolution of innovative and efficient technologies for ammonium and antibiotics treatment in agricultural wastewater.

Recycling utilization of Chinese medicine herbal residues resources: systematic evaluation on industrializable treatment modes

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an indispensable part of the world health and medical system and plays an important role in treatment, prevention, and health care. These TCM produce a large amount of Chinese medicine herbal residues (CHMRs) during the application process, most of which are the residues after the decoction or extraction of botanical medicines. These CMHRs contain a large number of unused components, which can be used in medical, breeding, planting, materials, and other industries. Considering the practical application requirements, this paper mainly introduces the low-cost treatment methods of CHMRs, including the extraction of active ingredients, cultivation of edible fungi, and manufacture of feed. These methods not only have low upfront investment, but also have some income in the future. Furthermore, other methods are briefly introduced. In conclusion, this paper can provide a reference for people who need to deal with CMHRs and contribute to the sustainable development of TCM.

Metallic iron (Fe0)-based materials for aqueous phosphate removal: A critical review

The discharge of excessive phosphate from wastewater sources into the aquatic environment has been identified as a major environmental threat responsible for eutrophication. It has become essential to develop efficient but affordable techniques to remove excess phosphate from wastewater before discharging into freshwater bodies. The use of metallic iron (Fe⁰) as a reactive agent for aqueous phosphate removal has received a wide attention. Fe⁰ in-situ generates positively charged iron corrosion products (FeCPs) at pH > 4.5, with high binding affinity for anionic phosphate. This study critically reviews the literature that focuses on the utilization of Fe⁰-based materials for aqueous phosphate removal. The fundamental science of aqueous iron corrosion and historical background of the application of Fe⁰ for phosphate removal are elucidated. The main mechanisms for phosphate removal are identified and extensively discussed based on the chemistry of the Fe⁰/H₂O system. This critical evaluation confirms that the removal process is highly influenced by several operational factors including contact time, Fe⁰ type, influent geochemistry, initial phosphate concentration, mixing conditions, and pH value. The difficulty in comparing independent results owing to diverse experimental conditions is highlighted. Moreover, contemporary research in progress including Fe⁰/oxidant systems, nano-Fe⁰ application, Fe⁰ material selection, desorption studies, and proper design of Fe⁰-based systems for improved phosphate removal have been discussed. Finally, potential strategies to close the loop in Fe⁰-based phosphate remediation systems are discussed. This review presents a science-based guide to optimize the efficient design of Fe⁰-based systems for phosphate removal.

Ball milling sulfur-doped nano zero-valent iron @biochar composite for the efficient removal of phosphorus from water: Performance and mechanisms

This study successfully prepared a novel sulfur-doped nano zero-valent iron @biochar (BM-SnZVI@BC) by modifying corn stover biochar with Fe⁰ and S⁰ using a mechanical ball milling method for effective phosphorus (P) adsorption in the waterbody. Batch experiments revealed that BM-SnZVI@BC (BC/S⁰/Fe⁰ = 3:1:1) reached a Q_max of 25.00 mg P/g and followed PFO and Langmuir models. This work had shown that electrostatic attraction, surface chemical precipitation, hydrogen bonding, and ligand effects all contributed to P removal. Since the FeS layer mitigated the oxidation-induced surface passivation of nZVI, sulfidation significantly extended the lifetime of BM-SnZVI@BC, removing 84.4% of P even after 60 d aging in air. The regeneration experiments of composites showed that re-ball milling destroyed the surface iron oxide layer to improve the properties of the recovered material. This is an essential step in the design of P-removal agents to implement anti-aging and commercialization of adsorbents for engineering applications.

Determination of the Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solution Using EDTA Functionalized Prunus Dulcis L. Peels by Solid-Phase Extraction Method

In the present study, Prunus Dulcis L. Peels was modified with ethylenedinitrilo tetraacetic acid and used as the sorbent for the preconcentration of Cd(II) ions from aqueous media. To characterize the sorbent, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis were used. The optimum preconcentration conditions such as pH, eluent type, sample volume, sample flow rate and foreign ions effect were determined. The mean recovery and relative standard deviation values were found to be 100.7 ± 1.5 and 4.01% for Cd(II) ions. The capacity of the sorbent was obtained 277.8 mg g^-1 from the Langmuir isotherm model. The limit of detection was calculated as 0.216 µg L^-1 (P.F:40). In order to test the accuracy and applicability of the method, certified reference material and spiked water samples were analyzed. The results demonstrated good agreement with the certified values (relative error < 10%).

Adsorption behavior and performance of ammonium onto sorghum straw biochar from water

Sorghum has been widely used for liquor production and brewing, but how to make efficiently utilize sorghum straw (SS) has become an urgent problem. Meanwhile, the wastewater produced by winemaking is typical organic wastewater with a high ammonium concentration. To solve the problem of resource utilization of SS and remove ammonium from water, SS was used to prepare biochar as an adsorbent for ammonium adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the influencing factors and adsorption mechanisms of ammonium onto sorghum straw biochar (SSB). The results showed that the adsorption capacity of SSB was much higher than that of SS. The SSB pyrolyzed at 300 °C had the highest adsorption capacity. The favorable pH was 6–10, and the optimal dosage was 2.5 g/L. The adsorption process and behavior conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm adsorption models. The maximum ammonium adsorption capacity of SSB at 45 °C was 7.09 mg/g, which was equivalent to 7.60 times of SS. The ammonium adsorption of SS and SSB was mainly chemical adsorption. The regeneration test indicated that SSB had good regeneration performance after three adsorption-regeneration cycles. This work suggests that SSB could be potentially applied to sewage treatment containing ammonium to achieve the purpose of resource recycling.

New low-cost biofilters for SARS-CoV-2 using Hymenachne grumosa as a precursor

The ongoing global spread of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 2019 disease) is causing an unprecedented repercussion on human health and the economy. Despite the primary mode of transmission being through air droplets and contact, the transmission via wastewater is a critical concern. There is a lack of techniques able to provide complete disinfection, along with the uncertainty related to the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 in the natural environment and risks of contamination. This fact makes urgent the research towards new alternatives for virus removal from water and wastewater. Thus, this research aimed to characterize new lost-cost adsorbents for SARS-CoV-2 using Hymenachne grumosa as a precursor and verify its potential for removing SARS-CoV-2 from the solution. The aquatic macrophyte H. grumosa had in natura and activated carbon produced with H. grumosa and zinc chloride (ZnCl_2,1:1) impregnation and carbonization (700 °C, 1 h) were incubated for 24 h with inactivated SARS-CoV-2 viral suspension, and then the ribonucleic acid (RNA) was extracted and viral load quantified through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique. The results demonstrated the great adsorption potential, achieving removal of 98.44% by H. grumosa "in natura", and 99.61% by H. grumosa with carbon activation, being similar to commercial activated carbon (99.67%). Thus, this study highlights the possibility of low-cost biofilters to be used for SARS-CoV-2 removal, as an excellent alternative for wastewater treatment or watercourses decontamination.

Circular economy-driven ammonium recovery from municipal wastewater: State of the art, challenges and solutions forward

In current biological nitrogen removal (BNR) processes, most of ammonium in municipal wastewater is biologically transformed to nitrogen gas, making ammonium recovery impossible. Thus, this article aims to provide a holistic review with in-depth discussions on (i) current BNR processes for municipal wastewater treatment, (ii) environmental and economic costs behind ammonium in municipal wastewater, (iii) state of the art of ammonium recovery from municipal wastewater including anaerobic membrane bioreactor turning municipal wastewater to a liquid fertilizer, capturing ammonium in phototrophic biomass, waste activated sludge for land application, bioelectrochemical systems, biological conversion of ammonium to nitrous oxide as a fuel oxidizer, and adsorption, (iv) feasibility and challenge of adsorption for ammonium recovery from municipal wastewater and (v) innovative municipal wastewater reclamation processes coupled with ammonium recovery. Moving forward, municipal wastewater reclamation and resource recovery should be addressed under the framework of circular economy.

The performance of aerobic granular sludge for simulated swine wastewater treatment and the removal mechanism of tetracycline

In this study, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was employed to investigate its ability on the decontamination of tetracycline (TC) from swine wastewater (SWW). The removal mechanism of TC by AGS was studied. Results showed that the AGS process could effectively remove chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH_{+ 4}-N), total phosphorus (TP), and TC during operation. The removal of TC by AGS was mainly due to adsorption and biodegradation, and the contribution rate of biodegradation increased after AGS adaptation to TC. Twenty-two by-products were detected during biodegradation of TC, and accordingly the degradation pathway of TC was speculated. Compared to the control reactor, the microbe diversity in different levels of classification was richer in the TC fed reactor according to the LefSe analysis. The results revealed that enzymes that participated in the metabolic pathway of microbial biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic compounds were enriched and may have played a key role in the biodegradation of TC.
