Abstract
In this study, cellulose was extracted from black tea residues to produce black tea cellulose nanocrystals (BT-CNCs) using an optimized acid hydrolysis method. The structure and performance of BT-CNCs were evaluated. The results showed that the optimal conditions for acidolysis of BT-CNCs included a sulfuric acid concentration of 64 %, a solid-liquid ratio of 1:18 (w/v), a hydrolysis temperature of 45 °C, and a hydrolysis time of 50 min. The optimization process resulted in a 44.8 % increase in the yield of BT-CNCs, which exhibited a crystallinity of 68.57 % and were characterized by the typical cellulose I structure. The diameters of the particles range from 5 to 45 nm, and they exhibit aggregation behavior. Notably, BT-CNCs demonstrated excellent storage stability, and the Tyndall effect occurred when exposed to a single beam of light. Although the thermal stability of BT-CNCs decreased, their primary thermal degradation temperature remained above 200 °C. The colloidal nature of BT-CNCs was identified as a non-Newtonian fluid with "shear thinning" behavior. This study introduces a novel method to convert tea waste into BT-CNCs, increasing the yield of BT-CNCs and enhancing waste utilization. BT-CNCs hold promise for application in reinforced composites, offering substantial industrial value.

Abstract
Tea plants have a long cultivation history in the world, but there are few studies on polysaccharides from fresh tea leaves. In this study, tea polysaccharides (TPSs) were isolated from fresh tea leaves. Then, we investigated the characteristics of TPSs during in vitro simulated digestion and fermentation; moreover, the effects of TPSs on gut microbiota were explored. The results revealed that saliva did not significantly affect TPSs' molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and reducing sugar content, indicating that TPSs cannot be digested in the oral cavity. However, TPSs were partially decomposed in the gastrointestinal tract after gastric and intestinal digestion, resulting in the release of a small amount of free glucose monosaccharides. Our in vitro fermentation experiments demonstrated that TPSs are degraded by gut microbiota, leading to short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and pH reduction. Moreover, TPSs increased the abundance of Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium but reduced that of Escherichia, Shigella, and Enterococcus, demonstrating that TPSs can regulate the gut microbiome. In conclusion, TPSs are partially decomposed by gut microbiota, resulting in the production of SCFAs and the regulation of gut microbiota composition and function. Therefore, TPSs may be used to develop a prebiotic supplement to regulate the gut microbiome and improve host health.

Abstract
Tea is the most consumed beverage worldwide and has many health effects. Although there are many different types of tea, black tea and green tea comprise 98% of total tea production in the world. Tea waste production consists of withering, crushing, fermentation, drying and finally packaging processes. All of the waste generated during this production line is called tea waste. Tea production results in a significant amount of waste that cannot be effectively used for value creation. This waste contains many different components including protein, fiber, caffeine, and polyphenols. Due to its rich composition, it can be revalorized for different purposes. In this study, the general composition and bioactive compounds of tea waste were reviewed. Despite the fact that there have been few studies on the bioactivity of tea waste, those studies have also been discussed. The extraction techniques that are used to separate the compounds in the waste are also covered. It has been indicated that these valuable compounds, which can be separated from tea wastes by extraction methods, have the potential to be used for different purposes, such as biogas production, functional foods, food additives, silages, soluble packaging materials, and adsorbents. Although there are some studies on the revalorization of tea waste, new studies on the extraction of bioactive compounds are necessary to improve its utilization potential.

Abstract
The effects of dried tea residues on the nutritional parameters and fermentation quality, microbial community, and in vitro digestibility of alfalfa silage were investigated. In this study, dried tea residues generated from five different processing techniques (green tea, G; black tea, B; white tea, W; Pu'er raw tea, Z; Pu'er ripe tea, D) were added at two addition levels (5% and 10% fresh weight (FW)) to alfalfa and fermented for 90 days. The results showed that the tea residues increased the crude protein (CP) content (Z10: 23.85%), true protein nitrogen (TPN) content, DPPH, and ABST radical scavenging capacity, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the alfalfa silage. Moreover, the pH, ammonia-N (NH3-N) content, and acetic acid (AA) content decreased (p < 0.05). The effects of tea residues were promoted on these indicators with increasing tea residue addition. In addition, this study revealed that the influence of dried tea residues on the nutritional quality of alfalfa silage was greater than that on fermentation quality. Based on the nutrient composition, the addition of B or G to alfalfa silage can improve its silage quality, and these tea byproducts have the potential to be used as silage additives.

Abstract
Herein, we have reported a photocatalytic Bi5O7I, protonated g-C3N4 heterojunction with directional charge transfer channels provided by tea waste biochar to achieve effective e-/h+ pair isolation for the improved degradation of Methylene blue (MB) and Doxycycline hydrochloride (DCHCl). An S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated via the novel method that combined hydrothermal and ultrasonic dispersion, followed by an electrostatic self-assembly route. The as-fabricated Bi5O7I/protonated g-C3N4/Tea waste biochar heterojunction formed a strong contact at the interface, as supported by the electron microscopic results. As per the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation kinetics study, Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) heterojunction showed a higher adsorption rate of 41.56% and 32% for MB and DCHCl within 30 min in the dark. Also, 92.02% MB and 90.21% DCHCl degradation rates in 60 and 90 min, respectively, are approximately 43 and 32 times higher than bare Bi5O7I and protonated g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The highest adsorption and degradation rate was achieved owing to the addition of Tea waste biochar and protonated g-C3N4 in a controlled ratio, and the sufficient interfacial contact between Bi5O7I and protonated g-C3N4 is for the improved isolation rate of e-/h+ pairs as evidenced by zeta potential values photoluminescence spectra as well as from scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) possessed high stability and recyclability after four consecutive cycles without much altering the degradation ability. Therefore, we believe that the as-fabricated Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) provides new insight into the highly efficient S-scheme mechanisms significant for accelerating multicomponent photocatalytic redox reactions; while forming an effective visible light responsive candidate for treating wastewater.

Abstract
Tea, the major beverage worldwide, is one of the oldest commercial commodities traded from ancient times. Apart from many of its advantages, including health, socio-economic, climatic, and agro-ecological values, FAO has recognized that the tea value chain covering its growth in the field, processing and marketing, and finally, the hot cup at the user's hand needs to be made sustainable during all these stages. Tea generates a lot of waste in different forms in different stages of its growth and processing, and these wastes, if not managed properly, may cause environmental pollution. A planned utilization of these wastes as feedstocks for various processes can generate more income, create rural livelihood opportunities, help grow tea environmentally sustainable, avoid GHG emissions, and make a real contribution to SDGs. Thermochemical and biological conversion of tea wastes generates value-added products. This review provides an overview on the impacts of the tea wastes on the environment, tea waste valorization processes, and applications of value-added products. The application of value-added products for energy generation, wastewater treatment, soil conditioners, adsorbents, biofertilizers, food additives, dietary supplements, animal feed bioactive chemicals, dye, colourant, and phytochemicals has been reviewed. Further, the challenges in sustainable utilization of tea wastes and opportunities for commercial exploitation of value-added products from tea wastes have been reviewed.

Abstract
Tea is a traditional plant beverage originating from China as one of the most popular beverages worldwide, which has been an important companion in modern society. Nevertheless, as the waste after tea processing, tea residues from agriculture, industry and kitchen waste are discarded in large quantities, resulting in waste of resources and environmental pollution. In recent years, the comprehensive utilization of tea residue resources has attracted people's attention. The bioactive components remaining in tea residues demonstrate a variety of health benefits and can be recycled using advanced extraction processes. Furthermore, researchers have been devoted to converting tea residues into derivatives such as biosorbents, agricultural compost, and animal feeds through thermochemical techniques and biotechnology. This review summarized the chemical composition and physiological activities of bioactive components from tea residue. The extraction methods of bioactive components in tea residue were elucidated and the main high-value applications of tea residues were proposed. On this basis, the utilization of tea residues can be developed from a single way to a multi-channel or cascade way to improve its economic efficiency. Novel applications of tea residues in different fields, including food development, environmental remediation, energy production and composite materials, are of far-reaching significance. This review aims to provide new insights into developing the utilization of tea residue using a comprehensive strategy and exploring the mechanism of active components from tea residue on human health and their potential applications in different areas.HighlightsThe composition and function of tea residue active components were introduced.The extraction methods of active components from tea residue were proposed.The main high-value applications of tea residues were summarized.The current limitations and future directions of tea residue utilization were concluded.

Abstract
The sustainable utilization of biochar produced from biomass waste could substantially promote the development of carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Due to their cost-effectiveness, multiple functionalities, tailorable porous structure, and thermal stability, biochar-based catalysts play a vital role in sustainable biorefineries and environmental protection, contributing to a positive, planet-level impact. This review provides an overview of emerging synthesis routes for multifunctional biochar-based catalysts. It discusses recent advances in biorefinery and pollutant degradation in air, soil, and water, providing deeper and more comprehensive information of the catalysts, such as physicochemical properties and surface chemistry. The catalytic performance and deactivation mechanisms under different catalytic systems were critically reviewed, providing new insights into developing efficient and practical biochar-based catalysts for large-scale use in various applications. Machine learning (ML)-based predictions and inverse design have addressed the innovation of biochar-based catalysts with high-performance applications, as ML efficiently predicts the properties and performance of biochar, interprets the underlying mechanisms and complicated relationships, and guides biochar synthesis. Finally, environmental benefit and economic feasibility assessments are proposed for science-based guidelines for industries and policymakers. With concerted effort, upgrading biomass waste into high-performance catalysts for biorefinery and environmental protection could reduce environmental pollution, increase energy safety, and achieve sustainable biomass management, all of which are beneficial for attaining several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

Abstract
Tea is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, with several health benefits attributed for its rich chemical composition and further associated with fermentation process to improve its quality attributes. Most tea types originate from the leaves of Camellia sinensis with differences in fermentation levels yielding black tea, green tea, pouchong tea, oolong tea. Teas like pu-erh or kombucha to encompass both green and red types are further post-fermented. Tea fermentation is a traditional process involving physical, biochemical, and microbial changes which are associated with improved organoleptic characters, nutritive value, and health outcomes. The production of fermented tea relies on naturally occurring enzymes and microbial metabolic activities. This review focuses on presenting a holistic overview on the effect of different microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, and fungi on the biochemical changes and sensory attributes of fermented tea products reported in research articles along the last 15 years. Moreover, production conditions and major biochemical changes are dissected to present the best factors influencing fermented tea quality. This review presents an evidence-based reference for specialists in tea industry to optimize tea fermentation process for targeted attributes.

Abstract
Tea waste powder (TWP) is one of the potential biomass waste to recover valuable chemicals and materials. The prime objective of this work is to investigate the role of acid pretreatment on TWP. Diluted acids (HCl, H3PO4, CH3COOH, and H2SO4) were used to soak the TWP to understand the role of acids on bond cleavage and chemicals formation. One gram of TWP was soaked in 100 mL of diluted acids for 24 h. The soaked samples were further subjected to a hot air oven (temperature: 80 °C, duration: 6 h), orbital shaking (shaking speed: 80-100 rpm, duration: 6 h), and microwave irradiation (microwave power: 100 W, duration: 10 min) to understand the synergistic effects of acids and mode of exposure. The pretreated solid samples and liquid samples were analyzed using FTIR to understand the presence of functional groups. The mass loss of TWP after treatment significantly varied with the type of acid and exposure mode used. In the orbital shaker, the mass loss was varied in the following order: H2SO4 (36%) > CH3COOH (32%) > H3PO4 (22%) > HCl (15%). In hot air oven, high mass loss was observed compared to orbital shaking [HCl (48%) > CH3COOH (37%) > H2SO4 (35%) > H3PO4 (33%)]. The mass loss in microwave irradiation is lower (19 to 25%) with all acids compared to orbital shaking. In the solid samples, O-H stretching, C-H stretching, C=O stretching, C=C stretching, -C-O-, and -C-OH- functional groups were noticed. Similarly, C=O and C=C peaks and C-O and -C-OH peaks were noticed in liquid samples. Interestingly, microwave irradiation showed promising results in 10 min of pretreatment, whereas orbital shaking and hot air oven pretreatments require 6 h to achieve the same result.

Abstract
This study was to assess the effects of tea residues-fermented feed (TR-fermented feed) on production performance, egg quality, serum antioxidant capacity, caecal microbiota, and ammonia emissions of laying hens. A total of 1,296 Lohmann laying hens have randomly distributed four groups with six parallels and fed with diets TR-fermented feed at the rates of 0 (control), 1, 3, and 5%. The inclusion of 1% (TR)-fermented feed resulted in a significant increase in egg-laying rate and average egg weight of birds, and a reduction in the feed-to-egg ratio when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The addition of 1 and 3% of (TR)-fermented feed significantly improved the Haugh unit of eggs (p < 0.05). The eggshell thickness was observed to increase by almost one-fold upon the inclusion of 3 and 5% (TR)-fermented feed in the basal diet (p < 0.05). The supplementation of 3% (TR)-fermented feed significantly increased the content of methionine, tyrosine, proline, essential amino acids (EAA), alpha linoleic acid (C18:3n6), docosanoic acid (C22:0), docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n3), twenty-three carbonic acids (C23:0), ditetradecenoic acid (C24:1) and total omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (∑ω-3 PUFA) in the eggs (p < 0.05). The addition of a certain amount of (TR)-fermented feed can enhance the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in chicken serum, and reduce the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05). The ammonia concentration in the hen house of laying hens in the treatment groups decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, the main phyla in the cecal bacterial community, were differentially abundant in each group, comprising greater than 55 and 33%, respectively. Collectively, this research indicates that (TR)-fermented feed supplementation improves the performance of laying hens and reduces ammonia emissions and can be used in industry-scale layer production.

Abstract
Green synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were impregnated into biochar matrix (EWTWB) to produce biochar-supported magnetic nanocomposite (GSMB). Instead of chemicals, organic matters in white tea waste extract were used as reductant, surfactant and functional capping materials. Magnetic biochar produced from traditional methods of pyrolysis (PMB) and co-precipitation (Co-PreMB) were prepared to compare their properties with GSMB. Xray Diffraction confirmed the main component of green synthesized particles is Fe3O4. When compared with PMB and Co-PreMB, the Fe3O4 produced by co-precipitation method has higher purity while the products from green synthesis method are complex and contain a small portion of other iron-containing compounds. As a consequence, Co-PreMB has higher saturation magnetisation value than GSMB, which are 31.3 and 11.5 Am2/kg, respectively. GSMB was also found to be less stable in acidic conditions (pH ≤ 4) than Co-PreMB. However, the SEM results exhibited that spherical magnetic nanoparticles (20-50 nm) were successfully formed and distributed on the surface of biochar via green synthesis method while serious aggregation happened on the surface of Co-PreMB. According to the result of BET, the surface area of GSMB increased dramatically from 0.2 m2/g to 59.7 m2/g. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Xray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed the presence of rich oxygen-containing functional groups on the GSMB The high surface area and rich functional groups making the green synthesis method a very promising greener way to prepare magnetic biochar for the purpose of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Although the composting of lignocellulosic biomass is an emerging waste-to-wealth approach towards organic waste management and circular economy, it still has some environmental loopholes that must be addressed to make it more sustainable and reliable. The significant difficulties encountered when composting lignocellulosic waste biomass are consequently discussed in this study, as well as the advances in science that have been achieved throughout time to handle these problems in a sustainable manner. It discusses an important global concern, the emission of greenhouse gases during the composting process which limits its applicability on a broader scale. Furthermore, it discusses in detail, how different organic minerals and biological additives modify the physiochemical and biological characteristics of compost, aiming at developing eco-friendly compost with minimum odor, greenhouse gases emission and an optimum C/N ratio. It brings novel insights by demonstrating the effect of additives on the microbial enzymes and their pathways involved in the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass. This review also highlights the limitations of the application of additives in composting and suggests possible ways to overcome these limitations in the future for the sustainable and eco-friendly management of agricultural waste. The present review concludes that the use of additives in the co-composting of lignocellulosic biomass can be a viable remedy for the ongoing issues with the management of lignocellulosic waste.

Abstract
The growing population and healthy food demands have led to a rise in food waste generation, causing severe environmental and economic impacts. However, food waste (FW) can be converted into sustainable animal feed, reducing waste disposal and providing an alternative protein source for animals. The utilization of FW as animal feed presents a solution that not only tackles challenges pertaining to FW management and food security but also lessens the demand for the development of traditional feed, which is an endeavour that is both resource and environmentally intensive in nature. Moreover, this approach can also contribute to the circular economy by creating a closed-loop system that reduces the use of natural resources and minimizes environmental pollution. Therefore, this review discusses the characteristics and types of FW, as well as advanced treatment methods that can be used to recycle FW into high-quality animal feed and its limitations, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of using FW as animal feed. Finally, the review concludes that utilization of FW as animal feed can provide a sustainable solution for FW management, food security, preserving resources, reducing environmental impacts, and contributing to the circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
Biochar made from agricultural waste is gaining more attention in energy field due to its sustainability, low cost, apart from having high supercapacitance performance. Also, it has a wide range of environmental applications, including wastewater treatment, upgrading soil fertility, contaminant immobilization, and in situ carbon sequestration. The existing thermo-chemical methodologies for converting agricultural waste into a sustainable material i.e. biochar and the role of activation agents in enhancing the performance of these materials were critically analyzed and discussed. An overview of recent trends in agricultural waste-derived biochar for supercapacitor electrodes is highlighted in this review that emphasizes green circular economy for encouraging net-zero utility of agriculture waste biomass. The roles of various newly prepared "green" electrolytes in reducing the negative consequences of supercapacitor is also reviewed. The trashing of agricultural waste and the depletion of energy supplies has become a global concern, hurting the world's ecosystem and economy through pollution and a fuel crisis and hence the concept of a green circular economic model is also highlighted.

Abstract
The growing threat of food insecurity together with some challenges in demography, health, malnutrition, and income instability around the globe has led researchers to take sustainable solutions to ensure secure production and distribution of food. The last decades have been remarkable in the agri-food supply chain for many food industries. However, vast quantities of food by-products and wastes are generated each year. These products are generally disposed in the environment, which could have remarkable adverse effects on the environment and biodiversity. However, they contain significant quantities of bioactive, nutritional, antioxidative, and aroma compounds. Their sustainable use could meet the increased demand for value-added pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and food products. The amount of agri-food wastes and their disposal in the environment are predicted to double in the next decade. The valorization of these by-products could effectively contribute to the manufacture of cheaper functional food ingredients and supplements while improving regional economy and food security and mitigating environmental pollution. The main aim of this chapter is to present an understanding of the valorization of the wastes and by-products from cacao, coffee and tea processing with a focus on their bioactive, nutritional, and antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
The increasing prevalence of gluten-related disorders has led to higher consumer demand for convenient, gluten-free bakery products with health-promoting properties. In this study, non-gluten shortbread cookies were incorporated with various kinds of spent (green, oolong, and black) tea leaves powder (STLP) at 8% w/w. Cookies with STLP had significantly higher (p < 0.05) moisture (2.18–2.35%), crude fibre (14.5–14.9%), total dietary fibre (22.38–22.59%), insoluble dietary fibre (15.32–15.83%), soluble dietary fibre (7.06–7.66%), and ash (1.9–2.0%) contents, but were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in carbohydrate (53.2–53.9%) and energy value (426.4–428.2 kcal) compared to control cookies (1.62%; 1.43%; 6.82%; 4.15%; 2.67%; 7.70%; 62.2%; and 457.8 kcal, respectively). The addition of STLP significantly enhanced (p < 0.05) the antioxidant properties of the cookies. Non-gluten shortbread cookies with spent green tea leaves powder (GTC) received the highest (p < 0.05) score for all sensory attributes, including overall acceptability. In addition, the shelf-life quality of the formulated cookie samples in terms of the moisture content, water activity, colour, texture, microbiology, and sensory properties was maintained (p > 0.05) for at least 22 days at 25 °C. STLP, which would have been previously thrown away, could be utilized as a potential functional ingredient to produce non-gluten shortbread cookies with enhanced nutritional, physicochemical, microbiological, sensory, and antioxidative properties.

Abstract
The introduction of large amounts of pharmaceuticals into the environmental waters is well-documented in literature with their occurrence reported in all different water matrices accessible to humans and animals. At the same time, the increasing consumption of coffee and tea-based beverages results in the generation of solid waste, which is mostly disposed-off in the environment. To minimize environmental pollution, coffee and tea-based materials have been proposed as suitable options to remove pharmaceuticals in environmental waters. Therefore, this article provides a critical review on the preparation and applications of coffee and tea-based materials in removing pharmaceuticals from contaminated water. In this context, most studies in literature focused on the applications of these materials as adsorbents, while only limited work on their role in degradation of pharmaceuticals is discussed. The successful application in adsorption studies is attributed to high surface areas of adsorbents and the ability to easily modify the adsorbent surfaces by incorporating functional groups that provide additional oxygen atoms, which promote easy interactions with pharmaceuticals. Hence, the adsorption mechanisms are mostly described by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interactions with sample pH playing a dominant role in the adsorption process. Overall, the present article focused on the developments, trends and future research direction on the preparations and applications of coffee and tea-based materials for efficient removal of pharmaceuticals in water. Abstract
N-doped carbon fibers (NCFs) were in situ prepared by Camellia sinensis branches waste through hydrothermal carbonization with urea/ZnCl2 at 160-280 °C under 0.8-8.9 MPa. The structural characteristics of NCFs were investigated by elemental analysis, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, Raman spectra, and BET surface area. The highest N content of NCFs obtained at 280 °C was 8.96%, and the main forms of doped N were pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, and graphitic N. Moreover, NCFs were applied to remove metal ions successfully. The results showed that NCF-240 had the maximum adsorption amounts of 106.52, 125.23, and 153.49 mg/g for Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+, respectively, while NCF-280 had the best removal ability on Cr6+ (145.67 mg/g). Finally, it demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of NCFs was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm models.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of co-composting of food waste (FW) and tea waste (TW) on the losses of total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and moisture content (MC) were investigated. TW and FW were composted separately and compared with the co-composting of FW and TW at different ratios. While the MC losses were close to each other in all processes, the lowest TN and TOC losses were found in the composting process containing 25% TW as 26.80% and 40.11%, respectively. Moreover, Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) were used to predict the losses of TN, TOC, and MC. The outputs of RBFNN were compared with Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Feed Forward Neural Network (FF-NN). In addition, the optimal parameter values were determined by Genetic algorithm (GA). As a result, it will be possible to simulate and improve different co-composting processes with obtained data.

Abstract
This study focuses on microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) of fresh waste tea powder and torrefied waste tea powder as feedstocks. Solvents including benzene, acetone, and ethanol were used for soaking feedstocks. The feedstock torrefaction temperature (at 150 °C) and solvents soaking enhanced the yields of char (44.2-59.8 wt%) and the oil (39.8-45.3 wt%) in MAP. Co-pyrolysis synergy induced an increase in the yield of gaseous products (4.7-20.1 wt%). The average heating rate varied in the range of 5-25 °C/min. The energy consumption in MAP of torrefied feedstock (1386 KJ) significantly decreased compared to fresh (3114 KJ). The pyrolysis index dramatically varied with the solvent soaking in the following order: ethanol (26.7) > benzene (25.6) > no solvent (10) > acetone (6). It shows that solvent soaking plays an important role in the pyrolysis process. The obtained bio-oil was composed of mono-aromatics, poly-aromatics, and oxygenated compounds.

Abstract
Rapeseed meal (RSM) is an agro-industrial residue of increased functional biological value that contains high-quality proteins for animal feed. Due to the presence of antinutritional factors and immature development technology, RSM is currently used as a limited feed additive and in other relatively low-value applications. With increasing emphasis on green and sustainable industrial development and the added value of agro-industrial residues, considerable attention has been directed to the removal of antinutritional factors from RSM using high-efficiency, environment-friendly, and cost-effective biotechnology. Similarly, the high-value biotransformations of RSM have been the focus of research programmes to improve utilization rate. In this review, we introduce the sources, the nutrient and antinutrient content of RSM, and emphasize improvements on RSM feed quality using biological methods and its biotransformation applications.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to evaluate the improvement potential of tea polyphenols (TPP) on silage characteristics and bacterial community. Stylo ensiled with TPP (0, 0.2 or 0.4%, on a fresh basis) were analyzed for fermentation parameter, protein fraction, antioxidant activity and bacterial community after 7, 14, 30 and 60 days fermentation. The addition of TPP resulted in the decrease (P < 0.05) of pH values (5.09 vs. 4.91), dry matter loss (11.77 vs. 8.02% DM), butyric acid concentration (1.64 vs. 1.02% DM) and ammonia-N proportion (13.69 vs. 8.98% CP, on Day 30) of stylo silage as well as the increase (P < 0.01) of lactic acid bacteria population (6.17 vs. 7.54 cfu/g FM) and true protein content (6.03 vs. 7.44% DM), particularly at the first 30 days of ensiling. It somewhat enhanced the antioxidant capacity of style silage at the early stage, and altered the bacterial community of stylo silage, with Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and Lachnoclostridium_5 much decreased but Enterobacter and Clostridium still being the dominant genera. It is suggested that TPP could help improve fermentation quality and nutrient preservation of stylo silage, and delay proteolysis process and antioxidant decay.

Abstract
The rising consumption of the popular non-alcoholic beverage tea and its derivative products caused massive growth in worldwide tea production in the last decade, leading to the generation of huge quantities of waste tea residues every year. Most of these wastes are usually burnt or disposed in landfills without proper treatment which results in serious environmental issues by polluting water, air and soil. In the recent times, 'waste to wealth' is a fast-growing concept for environment friendly sustainable development. Utilization of the large amount of tea wastes for the production of low-cost adsorbents to reduce the expenses of water and wastewater treatment can be a sustainable way of management of these wastes which at the same time will improve circular economy also. This review endeavours to evaluate the potential of both raw and modified tea wastes towards the adsorption of pollutants from wastewater. The production of various adsorptive materials such as biochar, activated carbon, nanocomposites, hydrogels, nanoparticles from tea wastes are summarized. The advancements in their applications for the removal of different emerging contaminants from wastewater as well as potable water, air and soil are exhaustively reviewed. The outcome of the present review reveals that tea waste and its derivatives are appropriate candidates to be used as adsorbents that show tremendous effectiveness in cleaning the environment. This article will provide the readers with an in-depth knowledge on the sustainable utilization of tea waste as adsorbent materials and will assist them to explore this abundant cheap waste biomass for environmental remediation.

Abstract
Biogas generation using food waste anaerobic co-digestion with activated sludge provides a cleaner addressable system, an excellent solution to global challenges, the increasing energy demands, fuel charges, pollution and wastewater treatment. Regardless of the anaerobic digestate end product values, the technology lacks efficiency and process instability due to substrate irregularities. Process parameters and substrate composition, play a vital role in the efficiency and outcome of the system. Intrinsic biochar properties such as pore size, specific surface properties and cation exchange capacity make it an ideal additive that enriches microbial functions and enhances anaerobic digestion. The pretreatment and co-digestion of food waste and activated sludge are found to be significant for efficient biogas generation. The advantages, drawbacks, limitations, and technical improvements are covered extensively in the present review besides the recent advancement in the anaerobic digestion system.

Abstract
With high pozzolanic reactivity, metakaolin (MK) is a popular supplementary cementitious material (SCM), which can be used to partially replace Portland cement in concretes. Due to its small particle size, however, MK can agglomerate, resulting in a nonuniform matrix and underperformance of the produced concrete. To address this issue, this paper exploits a low-cost, bio-based admixture—black tea extract (BTE)—to replace the traditional petroleum-based chemical admixture to enhance the dispersion and workability of MK blended cement mortars. Major biomolecules in the BTE such as caffeine, catechin, theanine, and theaflavin are rich in polyphenol, hydroxyl, and carboxylic acid groups, which can interact with cement particles and have profound effects on the hydration process and microstructure of the hydration products. Experimental studies showed that BTE does improve the workability of the MK blended cement mortar. More importantly, the BTE introduces significant change on the microstructure of the hardened pastes. Both the pores with size less than 50 nm and the total porosity of the hardened paste were significantly reduced, leading to a significant improvement in the micro- and macro-mechanical properties of the hardened paste. Experimental results suggest that up to 35% greater improvement in the compressive strength at 28 days was achieved using the proposed bio-admixture. Economic and environmental advantages of using the BTE as a renewable admixture were also illustrated through analyzing the cost–benefit, embodied carbon, and eco-efficiency of the MK blended mortars.

Abstract
Poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable and compostable polyesters. This review is aimed to provide a unique approach that can help think tanks to frame strategies aiming for clean technology by utilizing cutting edge biotechnological advances to convert fruit and vegetable waste to biopolymer. A PHA manufacturing method based on watermelon waste residue that does not require extensive pretreatment provides a more environmentally friendly and sustainable approach that utilizes an agricultural waste stream. Incorporating fruit processing industry by-products and water, and other resource conservation methods would not only make the manufacturing of microbial bio-plastics like PHA more eco-friendly, but will also help our sector transition to a bioeconomy with circular product streams. The final and most critical element of this review is an in-depth examination of the several hazards inherent in PHA manufacturing.

Abstract
Spent tea leaves (STL) are generated after the extraction of liquor from processed tea leaves and are regarded as an underutilized waste. STL are rich in essential amino acids, ω-6 and ω-3 fatty acids, alkaloids (theobromine and caffeine), polyphenols (catechin, theaflavins and rutin) and minerals (Ca, P, K, Mg, Mn) that could be utilized for the production of industrially important products. Vermicomposting, anaerobic digestion, silage preparation and fermentation are currently used as low cost methods for the bioconversion of STL to a usable form. Structural, morphological and chemical modification of STL after suitable bioconversion enables its application in the development of biopolymers, biofuels, catechin derivatives, biochar, absorbents for dye, and for removal of Cd, Hg, Cr(IV), As(V) and aspirin. This review discusses the composition, characterization, bioconversion and value added product generation from STL while highlighting prospective applications of STL in developing battery electrodes, nanocatalysts, insulation materials and edible bioactive peptides.
