Abstract
Ruminal microbes can efficiently ferment biomass waste to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs). However, keeping long-term efficient VFA production efficiency has become a bottleneck. In this study, yeast culture (YC) was used to enhance the VFA production in long-term fermentation. Results showed that YC group improved the volatile solid removal and VFA concentration to 47.8% and 7.82 g/L, respectively, 18.6% and 16.1% higher than the control, mainly enhancing the acetic, propionic, and butyric acid production. YC addition reduced the bacterial diversity, changed the bacterial composition, and improved interactions among bacteria. The regulation mechanism of YC was to increase the abundance and activity of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria such as Prevotella and Treponema, improve bacterial interactions, and further promote expression of functional genes. Ultimately, a long-term efficient ruminal fermentation of corn straw into VFAs was achieved.

Abstract
Anaerobic fungi (AF) efficiently degrade lignocellulosic biomass with unique pseudoroot system and enzymatic properties that can remove polysaccharides and some lignified components from plant cell walls, further releasing acetate, lactate, ethanol, hydrogen (H2), etc. As research on AF for bioengineering has become a hot topic, a review of lignocellulosic conversion with AF for methane (CH4) and H2 production is needed. Efficient degradation of lignocellulose with AF mainly relies on multiple free carbohydrate-active enzymes and cellulosomes in the free and bound state. Meanwhile, co-cultivation of AF and methanogens significantly improves the lignocellulose degradation and CH4 production, and the maximum CH4 yield reached 315 mL/g. Bioaugmentation of AF in anaerobic digestion increases the maximum CH4 yield by 330 %. Also, AF show H2 production potential, however, H2 yield from anaerobic fungal fermentation of lignocellulose remains low. Therefore, anaerobic fungi have great potential in the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to CH4 and H2.

Abstract
The mechanisms of biochar supported nano zero-valent iron (BC/nZVI) on two-phase anaerobic digestion of food waste were investigated. Results indicated that the performance of both acidogenic phase and methanogenic phase was effectively facilitated. BC/nZVI with the amount of 120 mg/L increased methane production by 32.21%. In addition, BC/nZVI facilitated direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between Geobacter and methanogens. Further analysis showed that BC/nZVI increased the abundance of most CAZymes in acidogenic phase. The study also found that BC/nZVI had positive effects on metabolic pathways and related functional genes. The abundances of acdA and ackA in acidogenic phase were increased by 151.75% and 36.26%, respectively, and the abundances of pilA and TorZ associated with DIET were also increased. Furthermore, BC/nZVI mainly removed IMP-12, CAU-1, cmeB, ErmR, MexW, ErmG, Bla2, vgaD, MuxA, and cpxA from this system, and reduced the antibiotic resistance genes for antibiotic inactivation resistance mechanisms.

Abstract
Two perturbations were investigated in acidogenic co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste in continuous mesophilic fermenters: increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) and changing the WAS. A control reactor maintained an OLR of 11 gVS/(L·d), while a test reactor had a prolonged OLR change to 18 gVS/(L·d). For each OLR, two WAS were studied. The change in OLR led to differentiated fermentation product profile without compromising the fermentation yields (∼300 mgCOD/gVS). At 11 gVS/(L·d), the product profile was dominated by acetic, butyric, and propionic acids while at 18 gVS/(L·d) it shifted to acetic acid, ethanol, and caproic acid. Reverting the OLR also reverted the fermentation profile. The biomass immigration with the WAS changed the fermentation microbial structure and introduced acetic acid-consuming methanogens, which growth was only delayed by the OLR increase. Microbial monitoring and post-fermentation tests can be used for early detection of acetic acid-consuming events.

Abstract
Microorganisms in the rumen play a crucial role in determining the most efficient utilization rate of nutrients. Among these microorganisms, Prevotella stands out as one of the most representative bacteria within the rumen biological system. Prevotella is a common strict anaerobic bacterium that is found in the gastrointestinal tract of livestock. Prevotella plays a crucial role in breaking down and metabolizing complex nutrients like cellulose and protein during food digestion. Moreover, it is capable of working together with other bacteria in the body's digestive system. Several studies have shown a strong correlation between the abundance of Prevotella and livestock growth performance. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current research on the function, mechanisms, and applications of Prevotella in the gastrointestinal tract. The insights provided in this review could serve as a theoretical basis for accurately classifying Prevotella, further investigating its effects and potential mechanisms on livestock growth performance, and exploring its practical applications.

Abstract
In this work, the corn straw (CS) with concentrations of 3%, 6%, and 9% (w/v) were pretreated by rumen fluid (RF) and then used for batched mesophilic biogas production. The results showed that after a 6-day pretreatment, volatile fatty acid (VFAs) production of 3.78, 8.27, and 10.4 g/L could be found in 3%, 6%, and 9%, respectively. When concerning with biogas production, the highest accumulative methane production of 149.1 mL CH4/g volatile solid was achieved by 6% pretreated CS, which was 22% and 45% higher than 3% and 9%, respectively. Also, it was 3.6 times higher than the same concentration of unpretreated CS. The results of the microbial community structure analysis revealed that the 6% CS pretreatment not only maintained a microbial community with the highest richness and diversity, but also exhibited the highest relative abundance of Firmicutes (45%) and Euryarchaeota (3.9%). This high abundance was conducive to its elevated production of VFAs and methane. These findings provide scientific reference for the utilization of CS and support the development of agricultural waste resource utilization and environmental protection.

Abstract
The control of emissions of short-chain hydrocarbons with different structures is critical for the petrochemical industry. Herein, three two-carbon-containing (C2) hydrocarbons, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, were chosen as pollutants to study the effects of chemical structure of hydrocarbons on removal performance and microbial responses in biotrickling filters. Results showed that the removal efficiency (RE) of C2 hydrocarbons followed the sequence of acetylene > ethane > ethylene. When the inlet loading rate was 30 g/(m3·h) and the empty bed residence time was 60 s, the RE of ethane, ethylene, and acetylene was 57 ± 4.0 %, 49 ± 1.0 %, and 84 ± 2.7 %, respectively. The high water solubility resulted in the high removal of C2 hydrocarbons, while a low surface tension enhanced the removal of C2 hydrocarbons. Additionally, the microbial community, enzyme activity, and extracellular properties of microorganisms also contributed to the difference in C2 hydrocarbon removal. These results could be referred for the effective control of light hydrocarbon emissions.

Abstract
Ionizing irradiation, as a new pretreatment method for the anaerobic fermentation of organic pollutants, is featured with fast reaction speed, good treatment effect, no need to add any chemical reagents, and no secondary pollution. This study explores the mechanism of improving anaerobic fermentation performance of rice samples pretreated by cobalt-60 gamma irradiation through the influence on fermentation substrate, acidogenic phase and methanogenic phase. The results reveal that the soluble chemical oxygen demand of the irradiated rice sample at an absorbed dose of 9.6 kGy increases by 12.4 times due to the dissolution of small molecules of fat-soluble organic matter. The yield of biogas in the acidogenic phase increases by 22.2% with a slight increase in hydrogen gas content. The yield of biogas and methane gas content in the methanogenic phase increases by 27.3% and 15%, respectively. Microbial genome analysis, performed with MiSeq high-throughput sequencing and metagenomic methods, suggests the microbial abundance and metabolic functions in the anaerobic fermentation process change significantly as a result of the pretreatment by gamma irradiation.

Abstract
The rumen of ruminants is a natural anaerobic fermentation system that efficiently degrades lignocellulosic biomass and mainly depends on synergistic interactions between multiple microbes and their secreted enzymes. Ruminal microbes have been employed as biomass waste converters and are receiving increasing attention because of their degradation performance. To explore the application of ruminal microbes and their secreted enzymes in biomass waste, a comprehensive understanding of these processes is required. Based on the degradation capacity and mechanism of ruminal microbes and their secreted lignocellulose enzymes, this review concentrates on elucidating the main enzymatic strategies that ruminal microbes use for lignocellulose degradation, focusing mainly on polysaccharide metabolism-related gene loci and cellulosomes. Hydrolysis, acidification, methanogenesis, interspecific H2 transfer, and urea cycling in ruminal metabolism are also discussed. Finally, we review the research progress on the conversion of biomass waste into biofuels (bioethanol, biohydrogen, and biomethane) and value-added chemicals (organic acids) by ruminal microbes. This review aims to provide new ideas and methods for ruminal microbe and enzyme applications, biomass waste conversion, and global energy shortage alleviation.

Abstract
Rumen microorganisms can efficiently degrade lignocellulosic wastes to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs). pH is a key factor in controlling the type and yield of VFAs by affecting the microorganisms involved in rumen fermentation. However, the effects of different pH on rumen microbial diversity, communities, and mechanisms are unclear. In this study, the hydrolysis and acidogenesis of corn straw and diversity, communities, and mechanisms of rumen microorganisms were explored at different initial pHs. Results showed that the highest hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin degradation efficiency of corn straw was 55.2 %, 38.3 %, and 7.01 %, respectively, and VFA concentration was 10.2 g/L at pH 7.0. Low pH decreased the bacterial diversity and increased the fungal diversity. Rumen bacteria and fungi had different responses to initial pHs, and the community structure of bacteria and fungi had obviously differences at the genus level. The core genera Succiniclasticum, Treponema, and Neocallimastix relative abundance at initial pH 7.0 samples were significantly higher than that at lower initial pHs, reaching 6.01 %, 1.61 %, and 5.35 %, respectively. The bacterial network was more complex than that of fungi. pH, acetic acid, and propionic acid were the main factors influencing the bacterial and fungal community structure. Low pH inhibited the expression of functional genes related to hydrolysis and acidogenesis, explaining the lower hydrolysis and acidogenesis efficiency. These findings will provide a better understanding for rumen fermentation to produce VFAs.

Abstract
A simplified inoculum agent, only comprising Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger, was utilized for industrial-scale cow-manure composting to investigate its impact on composting performance and microbiome. Inoculants elevated the average and peak temperatures by up to 7 and 10 °C, respectively, during the thermophilic stage, reduced organic matter content, and raised germination index. Inoculation also extended the period of composting above 50 °C from 12 to 26 days. Sequencing unveiled significant shifts in microbial diversity, composition, and function. Aspergillus thrived during the mesophilic phase, potentially initiating composting, whereas Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, and Clostridium were enriched during the thermophilic stage. Metagenomic sequencing revealed an increased abundance of carbohydrate-active enzymes and glycometabolism-related genes responsible for lignocellulose degradation and heat generation after inoculation. These enriched microbes and functional genes contributed to organic matter degradation and temperature maintenance during thermophilic stage, expediting composting. This suggests the effectiveness of this simplified inoculum in industrial-level cow-manure composting.

Abstract
Lignocellulose is an important component of domestic biodegradable waste (DBW), and its complex structure makes it an obstacle in the biological treatment of DBW. Here, we identify black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L., BSFL) as a bioreactor for lignocellulose degradation in DBW based on their ability to effectively recruit lignocellulose-degrading bacteria. This study mainly examined the lignocellulose degradation, dynamic succession of the microbial community, gene expression of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), and co-occurrence network analysis. Investigation of lignocellulose degradation by BSFL within 14 days indicated that the lignocellulose biodegradation rate in the larvae treatment (LT, 26.5%) group was higher than in natural composting (NC, 4.06%). In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of microbiota, we conducted metagenomic sequencing of larvae intestines (LI), along with the LT and NC. The relative abundance of lignocellulose-degrading bacteria and CAZymes genes in LT and LI were higher than those in NC based on metagenomics sequencing. Importantly, genes coding cellulase and hemicellulase in LI were 3.36- and 2.79-fold higher, respectively, than that in LT, while the ligninase genes in LT were 1.82-fold higher than in LI. A co-occurrence network analysis identified Enterocluster and Luteimonas as keystone taxa in larvae intestines and residues, respectively, with a synergistic relationship to lignocellulose-degrading bacteria. The mechanism of recruiting functional bacteria through the larvae intestines promoted lignocellulose degradation in DBW, improving the efficiency of BSFL biotechnology and resource regeneration.

Abstract
With the development of incineration technologies, incineration has become the most common treatment method of municipal solid waste in China. However, stabilized fly ash may enter landfills during the transition from landfill to incineration, which caused uncertain impact on landfill waste stabilization. Two simulated co-landfill columns were constructed based on different co-landfill methods (layer co-landfill and mixed co-landfill) to investigate the effect of stabilized fly ash co-landfilled municipal solid waste for bacterial community succession and change in metabolic pathways during hydrolysis-acidogenesis stage. The mixed co-landfill method resulted in higher degree of organic matter degradation, and the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in leachate were higher. The dominant phyla were Firmicutes in the layered co-landfill column and Bacteroidetes in mixed co-landfill column. The dominant genera for the total bacterial composition and VFA production were different, Pseudomonas and Propionibacterium, Proteiniphilum and unclassified Bacteroides were the dominant genera responsible for VFA generation in the layered and mixed co-landfill columns. The genes for butyrate production were enriched in the layered co-landfill column, whereas those related to acetate production were enriched in mixed co-landfill column. However, the layered co-landfill inhibited the microbial metabolic activity at the end of the co-landfill process.

Abstract
High resistance of erythromycin has been the key factor restricting the disposal of erythromycin fermentation residues (EFR). Considering the high sensitivity of erythromycin to acidic conditions, anaerobic fermentation may be a good approach for EFR treatment, through which pH decreases along with the volatile fatty acids (VFA) accumulation. This study firstly explored the EFR treatment by combined thermal pretreatment and anaerobic fermentation. Results showed that thermal pretreatment and anaerobic fermentation exhibited a synergistic effect on erythromycin removal. Erythromycin concentration decreased to 20.0 mg/L with the maximum removal rate of 60.0%, which was 140% and 71.4% higher than erythromycin removal by sole thermal pretreatment and anaerobic fermentation. Thermal pretreatment induced the increased VFA production by 22.3% with the highest VFA concentration of 5325.4 mg/L. Microbial analysis shows that thermal pretreatment stimulated erythromycin degradation and VFA production by increasing the microbial diversity and enriching the functional enzymes involved in acetate-producing pathways.

Abstract
Ruminant rumen is a biological fermentation system that can efficiently degrade lignocellulosic biomass. The knowledge about mechanisms of efficient lignocellulose degradation with rumen microorganisms is still limited. In this study, composition and succession of bacteria and fungi, carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), and functional genes involved in hydrolysis and acidogenesis were revealed during fermentation in Angus bull rumen via metagenomic sequencing. Results showed that degradation efficiency of hemicellulose and cellulose reached 61.2% and 50.4% at 72 h fermentation, respectively. Main bacterial genera were composed of Prevotella, Butyrivibrio, Ruminococcus, Eubacterium, and Fibrobacter, and main fungal genera were composed of Piromyces, Neocallimastix, Anaeromyces, Aspergillus, and Orpinomyces. Principal coordinates analysis indicated that community structure of bacteria and fungi dynamically changed during 72 h fermentation. Bacterial networks with higher complexity had stronger stability than fungal networks. Most CAZyme families showed a significant decrease trend after 48 h fermentation. Functional genes related to hydrolysis decreased at 72 h, while functional genes involved in acidogenesis did not change significantly. These findings provide a in-depth understanding of mechanisms of lignocellulose degradation in Angus bull rumen, and may guide the construction and enrichment of rumen microorganisms in anaerobic fermentation of waste biomass.

Abstract
Corn stover (CS) is a promising feedstock for producing biomethane, that can replace diminishing fossil fuels. However, the recalcitrant structure of CS resulted in low degradability in anaerobic digestion (AD). Numerous studies investigated the pretreatment of CS before AD, but the insight mechanism of biomethanation enhancement is not fully revealed. Therefore, this study advanced low-temperature urea-hydrothermal pretreatment of CS, and the biomethane production, substance bioconversion, hydrolase activity, and metagenomic analysis were conducted to unravel the intrinsic mechanisms of pretreatment for the enhanced biomethanation. The results showed that the pretreatment improved 11.5% of the specific surface area of CS, providing 111.5% higher total volatile fatty acids and 19.9% higher reducing sugars than the control, potentially enriching more anaerobic microorganisms. As a result, the pretreated CS achieved 19.1% higher biomethane yield, 9.1% higher volatile solid removal rate, and 3 days shorter digestion time. The mass balance and microbial community succession analysis indicated that the pretreatment reinforced the biomethane conversion from carbohydrate, which was attributed to the rapid enrichment of hydrolytic acidification bacteria (g__unclassified_o__Bacteroidales) (33.2%) and mixotrophic archaea (Methanosarcina) (72.3%). Meanwhile, the activity of cellulase and xylanase was enhanced up to 23.7% and 66.7%. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the combined pretreatment of CS promoted methanogenesis by enhancing various CAZymes secretion (such as oligosaccharide-degrading enzymes), and functional genes expression of hydrolytic, acidification and acetate-methane pathways at days 1-5. The study indicated that the combined pretreatment could influence microbial composition and function by changing the physicochemical properties of the CS, thereby improving methanogenic performance.

Abstract
Rumen microorganisms are promising for efficient bioconversion of lignocellulosic wastes to biofuels and industrially relevant products. Investigating the dynamic changes of the rumen microbial community colonizing citrus pomace (CtP) will advance our understanding of the utilization of citrus processing waste by rumen fluid. Citrus pomace in nylon bags was incubated in the rumen of three ruminally cannulated Holstein cows for 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h. Results showed that total volatile fatty acids concentrations and proportions of valerate and isovalerate were increased over time during the first 12 h. Three major cellulose enzymes attached to CtP rose initially and then decreased during the 48-h incubation. Primary colonization happened during the initial hours of CtP incubation, and microbes compete to attach CtP for degrading easily digestible components and/or utilizing the waste. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing data revealed the diversity and structure of microbiota adhered to CtP were distinctly different at each time point. The increased abundance of Fibrobacterota, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, and Butyrivibrio may explain the elevated volatile fatty acids concentrations. This study highlighted key metabolically active microbial taxa colonizing citrus pomace in a 48-h in situ rumen incubation, which could have implications for promoting the biotechnological process of CtP. IMPORTANCE As a natural fermentation system, the rumen ecosystem of ruminants can efficiently degrade plant cellulose, indicating that the rumen microbiome offers an opportunity for anaerobic digestion to utilize biomass wastes containing cellulose. Knowledge of the response of the in situ microbial community to citrus pomace during anaerobic fermentation will help improve the current understanding of citrus biomass waste utilization. Our results demonstrated that a highly diverse rumen bacterial community colonized citrus pomace rapidly and continuously changed during a 48-h incubation period. These findings may provide a deep understanding of constructing, manipulating, and enriching rumen microorganisms to improve the anaerobic fermentation efficiency of citrus pomace.

Abstract
The pH and substrate-to-inoculum ratio (S/I) are important parameters in the anaerobic fermentation of agroindustrial residues, and therefore the optimization of these two parameters is needed for a stable, efficient, and sustainable reactor operation. In this work, the parameters pH (5–9) and S/I (0.5–3 gVS gVS−1) were optimized to produce biobased volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from hydrothermally pretreated olive mill solid waste (HPOMSW). The response variables evaluated in the Doehlert design were total VFAs concentration (tVFAs) (mg L−1) and amounts (%) of isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acids on the VFAs profile. The pH was the variable that most influenced the mixed culture fermentation of HPOMSW, proving to be a key parameter in the process. Microbial community analyses of conditions 1 (S/I = 3 gVS gVS−1 and pH = 7) and 4 (S/I = 1.13 gVS gVS−1 and pH = 5) showed that Proteobacteria and Firmicutes accounted for more than 87% of the total microorganisms identified for both conditions. In addition, the second-order model best fitted the experimental data for the VFAs production at the desirable condition (S/I = 3 gVS gVS−1 and pH = 8).

Abstract
Fruit pomace addition to lucerne silage could rapidly reduce silage pH creating an acidic environment and thus maybe preventing spoilage. However, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different rates of inclusion of citrus lemon by-products on lucerne. In this study, the following five different treatments were prepared: L0 (control) with 100% lucerne; L25 (75% lucerne with 25% lemon pomace); L50 (50% lucerne with 50% lemon pomace); L75 (25% lucerne with 75% lemon pomace); and L100 (100% lemon pomace). After ensiling, the chemical composition, nutritive value, stability, in vitro apparent digestibility, and gas production of silage were determined. The dry matter (DM) content was higher for lemon pomace substitution equal to or exceeded 50% (P < 0.01). Crude protein, on the contrary, decreased (P < 0.01) over the same percentage of substitution. The L100 and L75 treatments showed higher DM apparent disappearance rate and lower (P < 0.05) crude protein and neutral detergent fiber apparent degradation rate vs. L0. Lemon pomace could be used at high inclusion level in lucerne silage, allowing the preservation of this by-product all the year, improving some chemical silage characteristics, and reducing proteolytic processes that usually happen on lucerne silage. Moreover, the in vitro apparent digestibility and gas production results showed that a partial substitution of lucerne with lemon pomace is able to improve silage digestibility.

Abstract
The modification sequence of chemical (CaO) and biological (liquid fraction of digestate, LFD) for augmenting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from rice straw was investigated in this study. The coupling order of the modifiers influenced acidification performance, and simultaneous modification (CaO-LFD) was superior to other modes. The highest VFAs production was obtained in CaO-LFD, 51% higher than that in the LFD-first additional modification. The CaO-LFD demonstrated the highest selectivity of acetate production, accounting for 79% of the total VFAs. In addition, CaO-LFD modification changed the direction of the domestication of fermentative bacteria and increased populations of the key anaerobes (Atopostipes sp.) responsible for acidification. The synergistic effect of CaO and LFD was revealed, namely, the effective function of CaO in degrading recalcitrant rice straw, the promotion of transport/metabolism of carbohydrates and acetogenesis by LFD.

Abstract
In the present study, a biochemical strategy for improving propionic acid production from kitchen waste acidification by bioaugmentation with Propionibacterium acidipropionici (P. acidipropionici) was investigated. When the inoculum of P. acidipropionici was 30% (w/w) of the seeding sludge, the propionic acid production increased by 79.57%. Further, bioaugmentation improved the relative abundance of Firmicute and Actinobacteria. The results of metagenomic analysis further reveal that the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and all related pathways of Propanoate metabolism (ko00640) were enriched when P. acidipropionici was added. For Propanoate metabolism, most functional genes involved in the conversion from Glycolysis / Gluconeogenesis (ko00010) to Propanoyl-CoA and conversion from Propanoyl-CoA to propionic acid were enhanced after bioaugmentation with P. acidipropionici, thereby promoting propionic acid production. As such, bioaugmentation with P. acidipropionici was effective in the anaerobic acidification of kitchen waste for propionic acid production.

Abstract
Cellulase is a microbial enzyme responsible for degrading the β-1,4 glycoside bond in polysaccharide cellulose, which is abundant in various animal foodstuffs. Cellulase is an important industrial enzyme used for various purposes, including biopolishing textile fibers, softening garments, biostoning denim fabric, and removing excess color from textiles. In the food industry, cellulase is combined with pectinase and hemicellulase. Therefore, the need for a reliable, fast, and inexpensive cellulase activity protocol that could be used with diverse biological and environmental samples is great. This study developed a novel method to quantify cellulase activity using picric acid (PCA), which reacts with generated glucose molecules to produce mahogany red picramic acid. This PCA-cellulase method uses sodium hydroxide instead of sodium carbonate to provide alkalinity in the reaction solution, increasing the stability of picramic acid and the sensitivity and linearity of the reaction. It also overcomes the limitations of previous methods. It is notable for its dependence on few chemicals with low concentrations compared to previous methods that depend on many chemicals with high concentrations. The PCA-cellulase method was optimized using the Box-Behnken design, and its accuracy was determined using a response surface approach. A Bland-Altman cellulase activity graph was used to validate the PCA-cellulase method with a correlation coefficient of 0.9991. Therefore, the novel PCA-cellulase method provides accurate results that are comparable to existing methods.

Abstract
Rumen microorganisms have the ability to efficiently hydrolyze and acidify lignocellulosic biomass. The effectiveness of long-term rumen microorganism fermentation of lignocellulose in vitro for producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is unclear. The feasibility of long-term rumen microorganism fermentation of lignocelluose was evaluated in this study, and a stable VFA production was successfully realized for 120 d. Results showed that VFA concentration reached to 5.32-8.48 g/L during long-term fermentation. Hydrolysis efficiency of hemicellulose and cellulose reached 36.5%-52.2% and 29.4%-38.4%, respectively. A stable bacterial community was mainly composed of Prevotella, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Ruminococcus, and Succiniclasticum. VFA accumulation led to a pH decrease, which caused the change of bacterial community structure. Functional prediction showed that the functional genes related to hydrolysis and acidogenesis of corn stover were highly expressed during long-term fermentation. The successful long-term rumen fermentation to produce VFAs is of great significance for the practical application of rumen microorganisms.

Abstract
In the past decades, considerable attention has been directed toward anaerobic digestion (AD), which is an effective biological process for converting diverse organic wastes into biogas, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen, etc. The microbial bioprocessing takes part during AD is of substantial significance, and one of the crucial approaches for the deep and adequate understanding and manipulating it toward different products is process microbiology. Due to highly complexity of AD microbiome, it is critically important to study the involved microorganisms in AD. In recent years, in addition to traditional methods, novel molecular techniques and meta-omics approaches have been developed which provide accurate details about microbial communities involved AD. Better understanding of process microbiomes could guide us in identifying and controlling various factors in both improving the AD process and diverting metabolic pathway toward production of selective bio-products. This review covers various platforms of AD process that results in different final products from microbiological point of view. The review also highlights distinctive interactions occurring among microbial communities. Furthermore, assessment of these communities existing in the anaerobic digesters is discussed to provide more insights into their structure, dynamics, and metabolic pathways. Moreover, the important factors affecting microbial communities in each platform of AD are highlighted. Finally, the review provides some recent applications of AD for the production of novel bio-products and deals with challenges and future perspectives of AD.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of different grape pomace storage techniques on the effectiveness as feed on in vitro ruminant digestion efficiency. Grape pomace from an autochthonous red grape variety (cv Nero di Troia) was used as fresh (GP) or ensiled, both without additives (SIL) and with the addition of a bacterial strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 5BG (SIL+). All the different storage treatments were subject to chemical and microbiological evaluation, as well as in vitro digestibility, and gas production. Microbiological data revealed the good quality of grape pomace and silages due to the lactic acid bacteria populations and low presence, or absence, of undesirable microorganisms. The addition of L. plantarum 5BG influenced the chemical characteristics of the silage (SIL+). Ensiling technique deeply changed the polyphenolic composition, reducing anthocyanins, flavonols, and flavanols (condensed tannins precursors), particularly when L. plantarum 5BG was added. Antioxidant capacity was reduced by ensiling, in correlation with the polyphenolic content decrease. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value of SIL+ was the lowest (P < 0.01) and its total phenol content was lower than SIL (P < 0.01). No statistical differences were observed between GP, SIL, and SIL+ on the antioxidant capacity by TEAC assay (P > 0.05). Ensiling did not affect the grape pomace nutrient profile, except for the reduction in NFC content. Apparent in vitro digestibility showed how ensiling increased dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), and non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) disappearance (P < 0.01), particularly with the L. plantarum 5BG inoculation. Moreover, SIL+ showed the lowest propionic acid (P < 0.05) and the highest methane (P < 0.01), butyric acid (P < 0.01), and nitrogen (P < 0.05) in vitro production. Ensiling GP resulted in a better in vitro digestibility, particularly if L. plantarum 5BG strain is added, probably due to the reduction of flavanols and their lower microbial activity inhibition.
