Combined addition of biochar and garbage enzyme improving the humification and succession of fungal community during sewage sludge composting

The Effects of Exogenous Benzoic Acid on the Physicochemical Properties, Enzyme Activities and Microbial Community Structures of Perilla frutescens Inter-Root Soil

This study analyzed the effects of benzoic acid (BA) on the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of perilla rhizosphere soil. The analysis was based on high-throughput sequencing technology and physiological and biochemical detection. The results showed that with the increase in BA concentration, soil pH significantly decreased, while the contents of total nitrogen (TN), alkaline nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) significantly increased. The activities of soil conversion enzymes urease and phosphatase significantly increased, but the activities of catalase and peroxidase significantly decreased. This indicates that BA can increase soil enzyme activity and improve nutrient conversion; the addition of BA significantly altered the composition and diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Gemmatimonas, Pseudolabrys, and Bradyrhizobium decreased significantly, while the relative abundance of harmful fungi such as Pseudogymnoascus, Pseudoeurotium, and Talaromyces increased significantly. Correlation analysis shows that AP, AN, and TN are the main physicochemical factors affecting the structure of soil microbial communities. This study elucidates the effects of BA on the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of perilla soil, and preliminarily reveals the mechanism of its allelopathic effect on the growth of perilla.

A systematic review on garbage enzymes and their applications in environmental processes

Understanding the new insight on conversion of organic waste into value-added products can improve the environmental activities driven by microorganisms and return the nutrients to environment and earth. Here, we comprehensively review the available knowledge on application of garbage enzyme (GE) for different environmental activities including waste activated sludge, composting process, landfill leachate treatment, soil remediation and wastewater treatment with special focus on their efficiency. To identify peer-reviewed studies published in English-language journals, a comprehensive search was performed across multiple electronic databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Pubmed, and Embase. The search was conducted systematically using relevant keywords. The eligible studies were analyzed to extract data and information pertaining to components of GE, fermentation process operational parameters, type of hydrolytic enzymes and improved environmental performance. The findings derived from this current review demonstrated that GE produced from the fruit and vegetable peels, molasses or brown sugar (carbon source), and water within fermentation process contain different hydrolytic enzymes in order to facilitate the organic waste degradation. Therefore, GE can be considered as a promising and efficient pathway in order to improve the environmental activities depended on microorganism including, composting, wastewater and leachate treatment and bioremediation process.

Enhancing C and N turnover, functional bacteria abundance, and the efficiency of biowaste conversion using Streptomyces-Bacillus inoculation

Microbial inoculation plays a significant role in promoting the efficiency of biowaste conversion. This study investigates the function of Streptomyces-Bacillus Inoculants (SBI) on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) conversion, and microbial dynamics, during cow manure (10% and 20% addition) and corn straw co-composting. Compared to inoculant-free controls, inoculant application accelerated the compost's thermophilic stage (8 vs 15 days), and significantly increased compost total N contents (+47%) and N-reductase activities (nitrate reductase: +60%; nitrite reductase: +219%). Both bacterial and fungal community succession were significantly affected by DOC, urease, and NH4+-N, while the fungal community was also significantly affected by cellulase. The contribution rate of Cupriavidus to the physicochemical factors of compost was as high as 83.40%, but by contrast there were no significantly different contributions (∼60%) among the top 20 fungal genera. Application of SBI induced significant correlations between bacteria, compost C/N ratio, and catalase enzymes, indicative of compost maturation. We recommend SBI as a promising bio-composting additive to accelerate C and N turnover and high-quality biowaste maturation. SBI boosts organic cycling by transforming biowastes into bio-fertilizers efficiently. This highlights the potential for SBI application to improve plant growth and soil quality in multiple contexts.

Unraveling the relationship between soil carbon-degrading enzyme activity and carbon fraction under biogas slurry topdressing

Biogas slurry, a by-product of the anaerobic digestion of biomass waste, predominantly consisting of livestock and poultry manure, is widely acclaimed as a sustainable organic fertilizer owing to its abundant reserves of essential nutrients. Its distinctive liquid composition, when tactfully integrated with a drip irrigation system, unveils immense potential, offering unparalleled convenience in application. In this study, we investigated the impact of biogas slurry topdressing as a replacement for chemical fertilizer (BSTR) on soil total organic carbon (TOC) fractions and carbon (C)-degrading enzyme activities across different soil depths (surface, sub-surface, and deep) during the tasseling (VT) and full maturity stage (R6) of maize. BSTR increased the TOC content within each soil layer during both VT and R6 periods, inducing alterations in the content and proportion of individual C component, particularly in the topsoil. Notably, the pure biogas slurry topdressing treatment (100%BS) compared with the pure chemical fertilizer topdressing treatment (CF), exhibited a 38.9% increase in the labile organic carbon of the topsoil during VT, and a 30.3% increase in the recalcitrant organic carbon during R6, facilitating microbial nutrient utilization and post-harvest C storage during the vigorous growth period of maize. Furthermore, BSTR treatment stimulated the activity of oxidative and hydrolytic C-degrading enzymes, with the 100%BS treatment showcasing the most significant enhancements, with its average geometric enzyme activity surpassing that of CF treatment by 27.9% and 27.4%, respectively. This enhancement facilitated ongoing and efficient degradation and transformation of C. Additionally, we screened for C components and C-degrading enzymes that are relatively sensitive to BSTR. The study highlight the advantages of employing pure biogas slurry topdressing, which enhances C component and C-degrading enzyme activity, thereby reducing the risk of soil degradation. This research lays a solid theoretical foundation for the rational recycling of biogas slurry.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal trends, fate, and treatment technologies for microplastics and organic contaminants in biosolids: A review

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, treatment and multi-criteria analysis of microplastics (MPs) and organic contaminants (OCs) in biosolids. A meta-analysis was complementarily analysed through the literature to map out the occurrence and fate of MPs and 10 different groups of OCs. The data demonstrate that MPs (54.7% occurrence rate) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants (44.2% occurrence rate) account for the highest prevalence of contaminants in biosolids. In turn, dioxin, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) have the lowest rates (<0.01%). The occurrence of several OCs (e.g., dioxin, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pharmaceutical and personal care products, ultraviolet filters, phosphate flame retardants) in Europe appear at higher rates than in Asia and the Americas. However, MP concentrations in biosolids from Australia are reported to be 10 times higher than in America and Europe, which required more measurement data for in-depth analysis. Amongst the OC groups, brominated flame retardants exhibited exceptional sorption to biosolids with partitioning coefficients (log Kd) higher than 4. To remove these contaminants from biosolids, a wide range of technologies have been developed. Our multicriteria analysis shows that anaerobic digestion is the most mature and practical. Thermal treatment is a viable option; however, it still requires additional improvements in infrastructure, legislation, and public acceptance.

Effects of adding steel slag on humification and characteristics of bacterial community during phosphate-amended composting of municipal sludge

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different proportions (0%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) of steel slag (SS) on humification and bacterial community characteristics during phosphate-amended composting of municipal sludge. Compared with adding KH2PO4 alone, co-adding SS significantly promoted the temperature, pH, nitrification, and critical enzyme activities (polyphenol oxidase, cellulase, laccase); especially organic matter (OM) degradation rate (25.5%) and humification degree (1.8) were highest in the 5%-SS treatment. Excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor confirmed that co-adding SS could promote the conversion of protein-like substances or microbial by-products into humic-like substances. Furthermore, adding 5%-SS significantly improved the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and the genes related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, and enhanced the interactions of bacterial community in stability and complexity. The partial least squares path model indicated that OM was the primary factor affecting humification. These results provided a promising strategy to optimize composting of municipal sludge via SS.

Dual Regulatory Role of Penicillium oxalicum SL2 in Soil: Phosphorus Solubilization and Pb Stabilization

The mechanisms of the P. oxalicum SL2-mediated microbial community on phosphorus solubilization and Pb stabilization were investigated through a 90-day soil experiment. In the treatments inoculated with P. oxalicum SL2, the amount of P. oxalicum SL2-GFP remained at 77.8%-138.6% of the initial inoculation amount after 90 days, and the available phosphorus (AP) content increased 21.7%-40.8% while EDTA-Pb decreased 29.9%-43.2% compared with CK treatment. SEM-EDS results showed that P. oxalicum SL2 changed the agglomeration degree of microaggregates and promoted the combination of Pb with C and O elements. These phenomena were enhanced when applied with Ca3(PO4)2. Microbial community analysis showed that P. oxalicum SL2 improved soil microbial activity, in which the fungi absolute abundance increased about 15 times within 90 days. Correlation analyses and a partial least-squares path model showed that the activation of Penicillium, Ascobolus, Humicola, and Spizellomyces in a fungal community increased the content of oxalate and AP, which directly decreased EDTA-Pb content, while the change of Bacillus, Ramlibacter, Gemmatimonas, and Candidatus Solibacter in the bacterial community regulated Fe/Mn/S/N cycle-related functions, thus promoting the conversion of Pb to oxidizable state. Our findings highlight that P. oxalicum SL2 enhanced the microbial-induced phosphate precipitation process by activating soil microbial communities and regulating their ecological functions.

Effects of biochar and volcanic rock addition on humification and microbial community during aerobic composting of cow manure

Additives are important for accelerating humification during aerobic composting. The impacts of porous additives biochar and volcanic rock on the physicochemical parameters, maturity indicators, microbial communities, and bacterial functional metabolism during the aerobic composting of cow manure were investigated in this study. The results showed that the biochar addition decreased the E4/E6 value by 10.42% and increased the abundance of Geobacillus (1.69 times), and volcanic rock addition decreased the E4/E6 value by 11.31% and increased the abundance of Thermobacillus (1.29 times) and Paenibacillus (1.72 times). The network analysis demonstrated that biochar promoted maturity by reducing the abundance of Pseudomonas and increasing the abundance of genes related to the metabolism of other amino acids, while volcanic rock promoted maturity by reducing the abundance of genes related to nucleotide metabolism. These results provided data and theoretical justification for the selection of porous additives for composting.

Effect of the addition of biochar and wood vinegar on the morphology of heavy metals in composts

In the experiment, the morphology of heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni, HMs) was characterized using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) were used to characterize the correlation between environmental factors and metal morphology in the rotting compost from several angles. The results showed that the humus treated with wood vinegar solution had a high degree of humification and rich aromatic structure. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that the degree of humus aromatization gradually increased during the composting process, which enhanced the complexation of humus (HS) with HMs but had less effect on Ni. In addition, the optimum concentration of wood vinegar (WV) was determined to be 1.75%. The results of the study showed that in the Pb passivation treatment group, the proportion of soluble (Red) and exchangeable states (Exc) converted to oxidized (Oxi) and residual states (Res) was 8%, 14%, 6%, 1%, and 12% in the CK, T1, T2, T3, and T4 treatment groups, respectively; in the Cr passivation treatment group, the proportion of Cr-Red and Cr-Exc converted to oxidized and residual states was 31%, 33%, 25%, 29%, and 25%; in the Cd passivation treatment group, the proportions of Cd-Red and Cd-Exc converted to oxidized and residual states were 5%, 15%, 4%, 9%, and 11%, respectively; whereas the Ni treatment group did not show any significant passivation effect. The proportion of Pb-Oxi was relatively stable, Cr-Oxi was converted to Cr-Res, whereas Cd showed the conversion of Cd-Oxi to Cd-Exc. SUVA254 and SUVA280 showed significant positive correlations with Pb-Res, Cr-Res and Ni-Res, and significant positive correlations with moisture content (MC); whereas MC was significantly negatively correlated with each form of HMs. Total potassium (TK), total nitrogen (TN), and both carbon (TOC) were negatively correlated with Pb-Res and Pb-Exc. Structural equation modeling verified the relationship between environmental factors and HMs, and the composting results showed that the addition of biochar (BC) and a higher percentage of WV could increase compost decomposition and passivate HMs to improve its agronomic function.

Exploring carbon conversion and balance with magnetite-amended during pig manure composting

This study was designed to explore the magnetite in maturation and humification during pig manure (PM) and wolfberry branch fillings (BF) composting. Different proportions of magnetite (T1, 0%; T2, 2.5%; T3, 5%; T4, 7.5%;) were blended with PM for 50 days of composting. The findings indicated magnetite amendment has no influence on the maturity, and the 5% ratio significantly promoted humic acid (HA) formation and fulvic acid (FA) decomposition compared to other treatments. Compared to T1, magnetite addition significantly increased CO2 and CH4 emissions by 106.39%-191.69% and 6.88-13.72 times. The further analysis suggested that magnetite improved Ruminofilibacter activity were significantly positively associated with HA, and C emissions. The further PICRUSt 2 analysis showed membrane transport may enhance environmental information processing by magnetite. Overall, these results demonstrated higher organic matter (OM) degradation and HA formation with an additional increase in microbial activity highlighted advantages of using magnetite during PM composting.

Occurrences of typical PPCPs during wastewater treatment and the composting of sewage sludge with micron-sized and nano-sized Fe3O4

New pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), accumulate in sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), posing risks to the environment and to human health. In the present study, the fates of typical PPCPs, carbamazepine (CBZ), triclosan (TCS), ibuprofen (IBU) and galaxolide (HHCB), were examined during WW treatment. Additionally, SS collected from a WWTP was used for aerobic composting to investigate the influences of micron-sized Fe3O4 (M-Fe) and nano-sized Fe3O4 (N-Fe) on the degradation of these PPCPs and the succession of microbial communities during the composting process. The results showed that the mean concentrations of CBZ, TCS, IBU and HHCB in the influent of the WWTP were 926.5, 174.4, 8869, and 967.3 ng/g, respectively, and in the effluent were 107.6, 47.0, 283.4, and 88.4 ng/g, respectively. The removal rate averaged ∼80%, while the enrichment rates of the PPCPs in SS ranged from 37.2% to 60.5%. M-Fe and N-Fe reduced NH3 emissions by 32.9% and 54.1% and N2O emissions by 26.2% and 50.8%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of M-Fe and N-Fe effectively increased PPCP degradation rates 1.12-1.66-fold. During the whole process, the additions of M-Fe and N-Fe significantly shifted microbial community structure, and the abundances of Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria were increased during the thermophilic stage, marking them as key PPCP-degrading phyla. Taken together, our results indicated that the addition of M-Fe and N-Fe is an effective method for improving the quality of end compost and accelerating the degradation of PPCPs.

Sulfur-aided aerobic biostabilization of swine manure and sawdust mixture: Humification and carbon loss

To investigate how sulfur addition affects humification and carbon loss during swine manure (SM) biostabilisation, various proportions of sulfur, i.e., 0 (CK), 0.2%-0.8% (S1-S4) were added to SM in a 70-day pilot-scale test. Compared to CK (16.07%), sulfur addition resulted in the mineralization of 17.05%-24.27% of the total organic carbon. Sulfur addition also reduced CH4 emissions, which were 3.7%-29.3% lower than that of CK. The total global warming potential values were in the range of 913.1-968.2 g CO2 eq kg-1 for all treatments. Although the sulfur-added treatments showed lower HA/FA ratios than CK after 70 days, no significant impact on the maturity of the final products was observed. Sulfur addition impacted the microbial community, CH4, CO2, N2O emissions, and affected the variation of temperature in biowaste biostabilization. These discoveries provided an important basis for understanding the function of sulfur in regulating the aerobic bio-decomposition of organic waste.

Comparison of bacterial and fungal communities structure and dynamics during chicken manure and pig manure composting

Composting is a sustainable and eco-friendly technology that turns animal waste into organic fertilizers. It remains unclear whether differences exist in the structure of microbial communities during different livestock manure composting. This study analyzed the dynamic change of bacterial and fungal communities, metabolic function, and trophic mode during chicken manure (CM) and pig manure (PM) composting based on 16S rRNA and ITS sequencing. Environmental factors were investigated for their impact on microbial communities. During composting, bacterial diversity decreased and then increased, while fungal diversity slightly increased and then decreased. Saccharomonospora and Aspergillus were the dominant genera and key microorganisms in CM and PM, respectively, which played crucial roles in sustaining the stability of the ecological network structure in the microbial ecology and participating in metabolism. Saccharomonospora gradually increased, while Aspergillus increased at first and then decreased. PM had better microbial community stability and more keystone taxa than CM. In CM and PM, the primary function of bacterial communities was metabolism, while saprotroph was the primary trophic mode of fungal communities. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was the primary factor influencing the structure and function of microbial communities in CM and PM. In addition to DOC, pH and moisture were important factors affecting the fungal communities in CM and PM, respectively. These results show that the succession of bacteria and fungi in CM and PM proceeded in a similar pattern, but there are still some differences in the dominant genus and their responses to environmental factors.

Effects of fungal agents and biochar on odor emissions and microbial community dynamics during in-situ treatment of food waste

The effects of the co-addition of fungal agents and biochar on physicochemical properties, odor emissions, microbial community structure, and metabolic functions were investigated during the in-situ treatment of food waste. The combined addition of fungal agents and biochar decreased cumulative NH₃, H₂S, and VOCs emissions by 69.37%, 67.50%, and 52.02%, respectively. The predominant phyla throughout the process were Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Combined treatment significantly impacted the conversion and release of nitrogen from the perspective of the variation of nitrogen content between different forms. FAPROTAX analysis revealed that the combined application of fungal agents and biochar could effectively inhibit nitrite ammonification and reduce the emission of odorous gases. This work aims to clarify the combined effect of fungal agents and biochar on odor emission and provide a theoretical basis for developing an environmentally friendly in-situ efficient biological deodorization (IEBD) technology.

Effect of biodrying of lignocellulosic biomass on humification and microbial diversity

By optimizing the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, this study accomplished an improved level of humification and microbial diversity in the biodrying process of lignocellulosic biomass. The results demonstrated that C/N ratio of 20 accelerated the decomposition of refractory lignocellulose, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and the production of highly mature fertilizer with a germination index of 119.0% and a humic index of 3.2. Moreover, C/N ratio of 20 was found to diversify microbial communities, including Pseudogracilibacillus, Sinibacillus, and Georgenia, which contributed to the decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of humic acid. Hence, it is recommended to regulate the C/N ratio to 20:1 during the biodrying of biogas residue and wood chips to promote the economic feasibility and bioresource recycling.

Garbage Enzyme-Mediated treatment of landfill Leachate: A sustainable approach

The study evaluates the soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) removal efficiency from landfill leachate by treating it with four different garbage enzymes at two temperatures (room temperature 27 ± 3 °C and higher temperature 42 ± 3 °C). The four different garbage enzymes were prepared by fermenting fruit peels such as pineapple, banana, orange, and lemon peels and treated with landfill leachate at different mixing ratios of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The results show that garbage enzymes made from orange (10%) and lemon (15%) have maximum sCOD reduction of 68.24% and 67.89%, respectively, at room temperature. The maximum solubilization was found in the pineapple and lemon garbage enzyme at 5% concentration. The samples kept at room temperature showed better solubilization and sCOD removal compared to the samples at higher temperatures. The study demonstrates that the garbage enzyme could be used to increase the bioavailability of organics in leachate.

An innovative way to treat cash crop wastes: The fermentation characteristics and functional microbial community using different substrates to produce Agricultural Jiaosu

With the increase of global demand for cash crops, a large of cash crop waste was produced and caused severe environmental issues. To produce Agricultural Jiaosu (AJ) using these wastes is a sustainable waste disposal method. However, the fermentation mechanism, metabolites, and microbial characteristics of AJ fermented with different substrates remain unclear. In this study, the effects of different substrates (fruit and vegetable waste and Chinese herbal medicine waste) on the fermentation characteristics of AJ, including metabolites and microbial community properties, were investigated. The results revealed that AJ fermentation was a process of converting organic matter into organic acids and other metabolites, mainly including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and maturation stages. At the genus level, Lactobacillus, Acetobacter, Hydrogenibacillus, Halomonas, and Prevotella_1 were the dominant bacteria in the fermentation system. The bacterial diversity of composite substrate AJ was higher than that of single substrate AJ. The organic acids and secondary metabolites concentration and the composition of key microorganisms depended on the substrate type. Furthermore, AJ's potential functional genes were mainly concentrated in cofactors and vitamin, carbohydrate, and amino acid metabolism. The findings of this study indicated that AJ is an innovative eco-friendly technology that can convert cash crop wastes into sustainable eco-products, and that its characteristics depend on the substrate type. Therefore, the substrate used to produce AJ should be carefully selected according to the application field.

Production of compost from logging residues

The implementation of forest management generates logging residue which can be used in several ways. One of the option is to use of logging residue in the composting process. Therefore, this study determined the possibility of producing compost based on logging residue and the produced fertilizer used to fertilize forest nurseries. Pine chips and sewage sludge were used for carrying out the study. The compost, as well as the leachate produced during composting, were characterized by high NPK content. The leachate collected at the end of the experiment was characterized by nitrogen content of approximately 6500 mg‧dm^-3, phosphorus of approximately 450 mg‧dm^-3, and potassium of approximately 500-700 mg‧dm^-3. In contrast, the compost produced contained approximately 0.57 g‧kg^-1 nitrogen, approximately 0.39 g‧kg^-1 phosphorus, and approximately 0.24 g‧kg^-1 potassium. The disadvantage in terms of the usefulness of the resulting fertilizer in forest nurseries is its pH, which exceeded 9.0.

Effect of calcium peroxide assisted microwave irradiation pretreatment on humus formation and microbial community in straw and dairy manure composting

In this study, the effects of four pretreatment methods on the crystallinity of maize straw were compared, and the CaO₂ assisted microwave pretreatment was selected for straw and dairy manure composting. The humification and microbial community were investigated. Results showed that the pretreatment increased the initial water-soluble carbon, which favored the microbial activity, and the CO₂ release increased by 15.71%. Pretreatment promoted the lignocellulose degradation, with total degradation ratio of 37.06%. The final humic acid content was 11.39 g/kg higher than the control. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that polyphenols and amino acids were significantly related to humus formation. In addition, pretreatment rendered the Firmicutes the most dominant phylum, and increased the metabolic intensity of reducing sugar metabolism, aromatic amino acid biosynthesis and carbon fixation pathways. Redundancy analysis revealed that the dominant genus of Firmicutes was significantly positively correlated with humus, while that of Actinobacteriota was correlated with CO₂ release.

Antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes in sewage sludge survive during aerobic composting

Municipal sewage sludge has been generated in increasing amounts with the acceleration of urbanization and economic development. The nutrient rich sewage sludge can be recycled by composting that has a great potential to produce stabilized organic fertilizer and substrate for plant cultivation. However, little is known about the metals, pathogens and antibiotic resistance transfer risks involved in applying the composted sludge in agriculture. We studied changes in and relationships between heavy metal contents, microbial communities, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in aerobic composting of sewage sludge. The contents of most of the analyzed heavy metals were not lower after composting. The bacterial α-diversity was lower, and the community composition was different after composting. Firmicutes were enriched, and Proteobacteria and potential pathogens in the genera Arcobacter and Acinetobacter were depleted in the composted sludge. The differences in bacteria were possibly due to the high temperature phase during the composting which was likely to affect temperature-sensitive bacteria. The number of detected ARGs, HMRGs and MGEs was lower, and the relative abundances of several resistance genes were lower after composting. However, the abundance of seven ARGs and six HMRGs remained on the same level after composting. Co-occurrence analysis of bacterial taxa and the genes suggested that the ARGs may spread via horizontal gene transfer during composting. In summary, even though aerobic composting is effective for managing sewage sludge and to decrease the relative abundance of potential pathogens, ARGs and HMRGs, it might include a potential risk for the dissemination of ARGs in the environment.

Mechanism analysis of humification coupling metabolic pathways based on cow dung composting with ionic liquids

This study focused on how adding ionic liquids (IL) affects composting humification. During the warming and thermophilic phases, addition of IL increased precursors content, and increased the polymerization of humus (HS) at later stages. Furthermore, the final HS and humic acid (HA) content of experimental groups (T) groups 129.79 mg/g and 79.91 mg/g were higher than in control group (CK) 118.57 mg/g and 74.53 mg/g, respectively (p < 0.05). IL up-regulated the gene abundance of metabolism for carbohydrate and amino acid (AA), and promoted the contributions of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, which affected humification. The redundancy analysis (RDA) results showed that the citrate-cycle (TCA cycle)(ko0020), pentose phosphate pathway (ko00030), pyruvate metabolism (ko00620), glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism (ko00630), propanoate metabolism (ko00640), butanoate metabolism (ko00650) positively correlated with HA and HI. HA and humification index (HI) positively correlated with AA metabolic pathways, and fulvic acid (FA) was negatively correlated with these pathways. Overall, metabolism for carbohydrate and AA metabolism favored compost humification. ILs improved metabolism for carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, thus enhancing humification.

Exploring the impact of biochar supplement on the dynamics of antibiotic resistant fungi during pig manure composting

The purpose of this study was to investigate antibiotic resistant fungal (ARF) communities in pig manure (PM) composting employing two different biochar (coconut shell-CSB and bamboo biochar-BB) as amendment. Three treatments (Control, 10% CSB and 10% BB) were designed and indicated with T1 to T3. Experimental results declared that the fungal abundance significantly reduced among the both biochar applied treatments but three dominant phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Mucoromycota were still relatively greater abundance present. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the relative abundance and diversity of fungi among all three treatments. Interestingly, biochar addition regulated the overall fungal community in final compost. Compared with the control group, the abundance of fungi was positively mobilized, and especially CSB showed a better effect. Conclusively, biochar has potential to inhibit and reduce the ARGs population and mobility in compost. Thus, these findings offer new insight to understand the succession of ARFs during PM composting.

Biochar amendment of aerobic composting for the effective biodegradation of heavy oil and succession of bacterial community

Soil pollution caused by petroleum pollutants from production trade activities in petroleum-related factories contributes serious threat to the environment and human health. Composting is technically-feasible and cost-effective in the biodegradation of heavy oil pollutants. This composting experiment was developed with four rice husk biochar (RHB) concentrations of 0 wt% (CK), 5 wt% (S1), 10 wt% (S2) and 15 wt% (S3) for the degradation of heavy oil. The results showed that RHB amendment could strengthen the degradation performance of heavy oil, and the degradation efficiencies for CK, S1, S2 and S3 were 59.67%, 65.00%, 73.29% and 74.82%, respectively. Microbial community succession process was investigated through high-throughput sequencing technology, and the RHB addition regulated bacterial community succession and further effectively facilitated the biodegradation of heavy oil in composting. This study substantiated that biochar materials-amended aerobic composting would be a promising strategy for the biodegradation of petroleum pollutants.

Fungal community enhanced humification and influenced by heavy metals in industrial-scale hyperthermophilic composting of municipal sludge

The succession of fungal community and effects of heavy metals on fungi during industrial-scale hyperthermophilic composting of municipal sludge remain unclear. Results showed hyperthermophilic composting enhanced decomposition and humification of municipal sludge in the short terms, while heavy metal concentrations and speciation had no significant change with high copper and zinc levels (101-122 and 292-337 mg/kg, respectively) in compost samples. The fungal community and its ecological assembly displayed dynamic change during hyperthermophilic composting. Some thermophilic-resistant fungi, such as phylum Ascomycota and genera Candida, Aspergillus, Thermomyces and Petriella dominated in hyperthermophilic phase. Heavy metals served important effects on fungal community structure and functions during composting. Some fungal drivers (e.g., Thermomyces, Petriella and Schizophyllum) and keystone fungi (e.g., Candida and Pichia) might be thermophilic- and heavy metal-resistant fungi which played important roles in decomposition and humification of municipal sludge. This study reveals fungal community accelerating humification and its influencing factors during composting.

Potential of biochar integrated manganese sulfate for promoting pig manure compost humification and its biological mechanism

This study aimed to clarify the effect of the integrated addition of different proportions of biochar (0 and 5%) and MnSO₄ (0, 0.25%, and 0.50%) to pig manure compost. The results indicated the integrated use of biochar (BC) and Mn²⁺ advanced the compost humification. In particular, the integrated use of 0.50% Mn²⁺ and 5% BC showed higher total organic carbon degradation (20.67%) and humic acid production (81.26 g kg^-1) than other treatments. Microbial community analysis showed the integrated use of BC and Mn²⁺ regulated the diversity and community structure of organic matter-mineralizing microbes by maintaining the relative abundance of bacteria Firmicutes (54.62%) and Proteobacteria (38.05%) at high levels during the thermophilic period and boosting those of the fungi of Ascomycota (58.91%) and Actinobacteria (15.60%) during the maturity period of composting. This study illustrated the potential and biological mechanisms of integrating BC and Mn²⁺ as additives in compost humification.

Mechanism of digestate-derived biochar on odorous gas emissions and humification in composting of digestate from food waste

Emissions of odorous gases and prolonged composting duration are the key concerns in the composting of digestate from food waste (DFW). In this study, different amounts of biochar derived from DFW (BC-DFW) were introduced in the composting process of DFW to decrease the emissions of ammonia (NH₃) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and composting duration. The addition of BC-DFW increased the temperature and germination index during DFW composting. The group with 25% BC-DFW exhibited a 30% smaller composting duration. Significant amounts of NH₃ and VSCs emissions were observed in the initial phase of DFW composting. Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) was a prominent contributor to the odor associated with VSCs. The addition of BC-DFW facilitated the adsorption of NH₃ and VSCs, and the corresponding contents decreased by 5-21% and 15-20%, respectively. Moreover,the BC-DFW accelerated the transformation of ammonium-nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) to nitrate-nitrogen (NO₃^--N), thereby alleviating the NH₃ volatilization. The addition of 25% BC-DFW minimized the NH₃ emission and enhanced the generation of humic-acid-like matter, thereby promoting humification. Therefore, the addition of 25% BC-DFW was optimal for promoting the degradation of organic matter and humification and odor emission reduction (e.g., NH₃, DMDS).

Insights into the effect of iron-carbon particle amendment on food waste composting: Physicochemical properties and the microbial community

The effects of iron-carbon (Fe-C) particle amendment on organic matter degradation, product quality and functional microbial community in food waste composting were investigated. Fe-C particles (10%) were added to the material and composted for 32 days in a lab-scale composting system. The results suggested that Fe-C particle enhanced organic matter degradation by 12.3%, particularly lignocellulose, leading to a greater humification process (increased by 15.5%). In addition, NO₃^--N generation was enhanced (15.9%) by nitrification with more active ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities in the cooling and maturity periods. Fe-C particles not only significantly increased the relative abundances of Bacillus and Aspergillus for organic matter decomposition, but also decreased the relative abundances of acid-producing bacteria. RDA analysis demonstrated that the bacterial community was significantly influenced by dissolved organic matter, C/N, NO₃^--N, humic acid, volatile fatty acids and pH, while electrical conductivity was the key factor affecting the fungal community.
