Abstract
Methane recovery and organics removal in sulfate (SO42-)-rich wastewater anaerobic digestion are hindered by electron competition between methanogenesis and sulfidogenesis. Here, intermittently electrostimulated bioelectrodes were developed to facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET)-driven syntrophic methanogenesis, increasing substrate competition among methanogenic archaea (MA). By optimising the electrochemical environment, MA was able to employ electron transfer more efficiently than sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), resulting in significant methane accumulation (58.1 ± 1.0 mL-CH4/m3reactor) and COD removal (90.5 ± 0.5 %) at lower COD/SO42- ratio. Intermittent electrostimulation improved the metabolic pathway for electroactive bacteria to utilize acetate and direct electrons to electrotrophic MA, decreasing SRB abundance and affecting the sulfate reduction pathway. Intermittently electrostimulated biofilms significantly increased gene levels of key enzymes in electron transport for cytochrome and e-pili biosynthesis, crucial for DIET, demonstrating enhanced DIET-driven syntrophic methanogenesis. This study provides a strategic approach to optimize methanogenesis in sulfate-rich wastewater anaerobic digestion.

Abstract
Microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) have the potential for enhancing the efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, microbiological and metabolic pathways in the biocathode of anaerobic digestion coupled with microbial electrolysis cells system (AD-MEC) were revealed to separate bioanode. The biocathode efficiently degraded 90 % propionate within 48 h, leading to a methane production rate of 3222 mL·m-2·d-1. The protein and heme-rich cathodic biofilm enhanced redox capacity and facilitated interspecies electron transfer. Key acid-degrading bacteria, including Dechloromonas agitata, Ignavibacteriales bacterium UTCHB2, and Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans, along with functional proteins such as cytochrome c and e-pili, established mutualistic relationships with Methanothrix soehngenii. This synergy facilitated a multi-pathway metabolic process that converted acetate and CO2 into methane. The study sheds light on the intricate microbial dynamics within the biocathode, suggesting promising prospects for the scalable integration of AD-MEC and its potential in sustainable energy production.

Abstract
The productivity and efficiency of two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell and anaerobic digestion integrated system (MEC-AD) were promoted by a complex of anaerobic granular sludge and iron oxides (Fe-AnGS) as inoculum. Results showed that MEC-AD with Fe-AnGS achieved biogas upgrading with a 23%-29% increase in the energy recovery rate of external circuit current and a 26%-31% decrease in volatile fatty acids. The energy recovery rate of MEC-AD remained at 52%-57%, indicating a stable operation performance. The selectively enriched methanogens and electroactive bacteria resulted in dominant hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogenesis in the cathode and anode chambers. Mechanistic analysis revealed that MEC-AD with Fe-AnGS led to specifically upregulated enzymes related to energy metabolism and electron transfer. Fe-AnGS as inoculum could improve the long-term operation performance of MEC-AD. Consequently, this study provides an efficient strategy for biogas upgrading in MEC-AD.

Abstract
In this study, a pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was developed to continuously produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from kitchen waste slurry under an alkaline condition. The alkaline fermentation effectively suppressed methanogenesis, thus achieving high VFAs production of 60.3 g/L. Acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid accounted for over 95.0 % of the total VFAs. The VFAs yield, productivity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) recovery efficiency reached 0.5 g/g-CODinfluent, 6.0 kg/m3/d, and 62.8 %, respectively. Moreover, the CODVFAs/CODeffluent ratio exceeded 96.0 %, and the CODVFAs/NH3-N ratio through ammonia distillation reached up to 192.5. The microbial community was reshaped during the alkaline fermentation with increasing salinity. The membrane fouling of the AnMBR was alleviated by chemical cleaning and sludge discharge, and membrane modules displayed a sustained filtration performance. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that high-quality VFAs could be efficiently produced from kitchen waste slurry using an AnMBR process via alkaline fermentation.

Abstract
The current methods of treating organic waste suffer from limited resource usage and low product value. Research and development of value-added products emerges as an unavoidable trend for future growth. Electro-fermentation (EF) is a technique employed to stimulate cell proliferation, expedite microbial metabolism, and enhance the production of value-added products by administering minute voltages or currents in the fermentation system. This method represents a novel research direction lying at the crossroads of electrochemistry and biology. This article documents the current progress of EF for a range of value-added products, including gaseous fuels, organic acids, and other organics. It also presents novel value-added products, such as 1,3-propanediol, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, succinic acid, acrylic acid, and lysine. The latest research trends suggest a focus on EF for cogeneration of value-added products, studying microbial community structure and electroactive bacteria, exploring electron transfer mechanisms in EF systems, developing effective methods for nutrient recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus, optimizing EF conditions, and utilizing biosensors and artificial neural networks in this area. In this paper, an analysis is conducted on the challenges that currently exist regarding the selection of conductive materials, optimization of electrode materials, and development of bioelectrochemical system (BES) coupling processes in EF systems. The aim is to provide a reference for the development of more efficient, advanced, and value-added EF technologies. Overall, this paper aims to provide references and ideas for the development of more efficient and advanced EF technology.

Abstract
Biochar promotes microbial metabolic activities and reduces N2O on aerobic composting. However, the effects of magnetic biochar (MBC) on the microbial succession and N2O emissions during pig manure composting remain unclear. Herein, a 42-day composting experiment was conducted with five treatment regimes: pig manure without biochar (CK), 5 % pig manure-based biochar (5 % PBC), 2 % MBC (2 % MBC), 5 % MBC (5 % MBC) and 7.5 % MBC (7.5 % MBC)), to clarify the variation in functional microorganisms and genes associated with nitrogen and direct interspecies electron transfer via metagenomics. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed that MBC possessed more stable aromatic structures than pig manure-based biochar (PBC), indicating its greater potential for nitrous oxide reduction. MBC treatments were more effective in composting organic matter and improving the carbon/nitrogen ratio than PBC. The microbial composition during composting varied significantly, with the dominant phyla shifting from Firmicutes to Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidota. Network and hierarchical clustering analyses showed that the MBC treatment enhanced the interactions of dominant microbes (Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota) and accelerated the composting process. The biochar addition accelerated assimilatory nitrate reduction and slowed dissimilatory nitrate reduction and denitrification. The Mantel test demonstrated that magnetic biochar potentially helped regulate composting nutrients and affected functional nitrogen genes. These findings shed light on the role of MBC in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions during aerobic composting.

Abstract
Currently, little information is available on relative contributions among biochar (BC), activated carbon (AC), magnetic BC (MBC), and magnetic AC (MAC) to enhance the effectiveness of a microbial electrolytic cells coupled with anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) system and the impact of carbon-based materials on microbial community. In this study, six anaerobic reactors were constructed to demonstrate the effects of different carbon-based materials on organic matter elimination in the MEC-AD system. Remarkably, the reactor containing MBC exhibited a significant increase in organic removal, achieving 95.0 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) eradication. Additionally, the MBC-added MEC-AD reactor yields acetic acid at a rate 2.9 times higher than that of the BC-added reactor. Electrical stimulation enriched electro-producing bacteria such as Pseudomonas (18.1 %) and Gordonia (6.8 %), which were further promoted by the addition of MBC, indicating that the microbial communities cultivated with the MBC could provide the necessary microbiome for the MEC.

Abstract
The effects of microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) integration stage on two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) of food waste (FW) were studied via semi-continuous experiments. The results showed that both MEC (with 1.2 V) integrations enhanced the performances of the TSADs, with the enhancement of electro-two stages being higher. The methane production of TSAD increased from 1.36 ± 0.04 L/L/d to 1.53 ± 0.05 L/L/d (electro-methanogenic stage) and 1.54 ± 0.04 L/L/d (electro-two stages) during the steady period. Electro-acidogenesis decreased propionic acid production and enhanced hydrogen production, while electro-methanogenesis promoted the conversion of volatile fatty acids to methane. The MEC integration improved energy recovery from the organic matter in FW by 11.65-16.15% and reduced the mass loss, with those of the electro-two stages being higher and the electro-methanogenic stage being dominant in the electro-two stages. The integration of MEC enhanced anaerobic fermentation by enriching Olsenella, norank_f__ST-12K33 and Proteiniphilum and improved methanogenesis by enriching Methanobacterium and Candidatus_Methanofastidiosum.

Abstract
Organic solid waste (OSW) is not only a major source of environmental contamination, but also a vast store of useful materials due to its high concentration of biodegradable components that can be recycled. Composting has been proposed as an effective strategy for recycling OSW back into the soil in light of the necessity of a sustainable and circular economy. In addition, unconventional composting methods such as membrane-covered aerobic composting and vermicomposting have been reported more effective than traditional composting in improving soil biodiversity and promoting plant growth. This review investigates the current advancements and potential trends of using widely available OSW to produce fertilizers. At the same time, this review highlights the crucial role of additives such as microbial agents and biochar in the control of harmful substances in composting. Composting of OSW should include a complete strategy and a methodical way of thinking that can allow product development and decision optimization through interdisciplinary integration and data-driven methodologies. Future research will likely concentrate on the potential in controlling emerging pollutants, evolution of microbial communities, biochemical composition conversion, and the micro properties of different gases and membranes. Additionally, screening of functional bacteria with stable performance and exploration of advanced analytical methods for compost products are important for understanding the intrinsic mechanisms of pollutant degradation.

Abstract
Mushrooms have always been an important source of food, with high nutritional value and medicinal attributes. With the use of biotechnological applications, mushrooms have gained further attention as a source of healthy food and bioenergy. This review presents different biotechnological applications and explores how these can support global food, energy, and water security. It highlights mushroom's relevance to meet the sustainable development goals of the UN. This review also discusses mushroom farming and its requirements. The biotechnology review includes sections on how to use mushrooms in producing nanoparticles, bioenergy, and bioactive compounds, as well as how to use mushrooms in bioremediation. The different applications are discussed under the water, energy, and food (WEF) nexus. As far as we know, this is the first report on mushroom biotechnology and its relationships to the WEF nexus. Finally, the review valorizes mushroom biotechnology and suggests different possibilities for mushroom farming integration.

Abstract
By optimizing the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, this study accomplished an improved level of humification and microbial diversity in the biodrying process of lignocellulosic biomass. The results demonstrated that C/N ratio of 20 accelerated the decomposition of refractory lignocellulose, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and the production of highly mature fertilizer with a germination index of 119.0% and a humic index of 3.2. Moreover, C/N ratio of 20 was found to diversify microbial communities, including Pseudogracilibacillus, Sinibacillus, and Georgenia, which contributed to the decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of humic acid. Hence, it is recommended to regulate the C/N ratio to 20:1 during the biodrying of biogas residue and wood chips to promote the economic feasibility and bioresource recycling.
