3D printable strong and tough composite organo-hydrogels inspired by natural hierarchical composite design principles

Fabrication of composite hydrogels can effectively enhance the mechanical and functional properties of conventional hydrogels. While ceramic reinforcement is common in many hard biological tissues, ceramic-reinforced hydrogels lack a similar natural prototype for bioinspiration. This raises a key question: How can we still attain bioinspired mechanical mechanisms in composite hydrogels without mimicking a specific composition and structure? Abstracting the hierarchical composite design principles of natural materials, this study proposes a hierarchical fabrication strategy for ceramic-reinforced organo-hydrogels, featuring (1) aligned ceramic platelets through direct-ink-write printing, (2) poly(vinyl alcohol) organo-hydrogel matrix reinforced by solution substitution, and (3) silane-treated platelet-matrix interfaces. Unit filaments are further printed into a selection of bioinspired macro-architectures, leading to high stiffness, strength, and toughness (fracture energy up to 31.1 kJ/m2), achieved through synergistic multi-scale energy dissipation. The materials also exhibit wide operation tolerance and electrical conductivity for flexible electronics in mechanically demanding conditions. Hence, this study demonstrates a model strategy that extends the fundamental design principles of natural materials to fabricate composite hydrogels with synergistic mechanical and functional enhancement.

Evaluation of the impact of alkyl silane entity (APTES) on photocatalyst (TiO2) and their photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds for environmental remediation

Environmental pollution by diverse organic pollutants is a serious issue facing humanity, and the scientific community is working hard to find a solution to climatic change due to pollution. Along the same lines, we have tried to find a material/method which is economical and less laborious for achieving the same desired objectives. In this work, the surface modification of titanium dioxide to be used as a photocatalyst was carried out with different concentrations of alkyl silane agent APTES (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) and studied their impact on the degradation of representative compound, i.e., methylene blue. The surface-modified TiO₂-APTES nanoparticles were obtained via the solvothermal process. The APTES in different molar (0.21-0.41 M) concentrations was obtained by dissolving APTES in ethanol. The obtained samples were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was inferred from the degradation ability of functionalized nanoparticles for methylene blue and evaluated by UV-visible spectroscopy. Our results demonstrated a significant 70% degradation rate of methylene blue.

Antifouling poly(PEGMA) grafting modified titanium surface reduces osseointegration through resisting adhesion of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells

As an alternative strategy to achieve the desired bone augmentation, tenting screw technology (TST) has considerably broadened the indications for implant treatment. Titanium tenting screws are typically used in TST to maintain the space for bone regeneration. However, a high degree of osteogenic integration complicate titanium tenting screw removal and impact the bone healing micro-environment. Previous efforts have been focused on modifying titanium surfaces to enhance osseointegration while ignoring the opposite process. Due to the vital role of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in bone regeneration, it might be feasible to reduce osseointegration around titanium tenting screws by resisting the adhesion of BMSCs. Herein, poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (poly(PEGMA)) with an optimal length of PEG chain was incorporated with a Ti surface in terms of surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP). The cell apoptosis analysis showed that the new surface would not induce the apoptosis of BMSCs. Then, the adhesive and proliferative behaviors of BMSCs on the surface were analyzed which indicated that the poly(PEGMA) surface could inhibit the proliferation of BMSCs through resisting the adhesion process. Furthermore, in vivo experiments revealed the presence of the poly(PEGMA) on the surface resulted in a lower bone formation and osseointegration compared with the Ti group. Collectively, this dense poly(PEGMA) surface of Ti may serve as a promising material for clinical applications in the future. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The significance of this research includes: The poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (poly(PEGMA)) with an optimal length of PEG chain was grafted onto a Ti surface by surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP). The PEGMA surface could reduce the osteogenic integration by preventing the adhesion of cells, resulting in a lower pullout force of the modified implant and thereby desirable and feasible applications in dental surgery.

A new technique for incorporation of TiO2 nanotubes on a pre-sintered Y-TZP and its effect on bond strength as compared to conventional air-borne particle abrasion and silicatization TiO2 nanotubes application on pre-sintered Y-TZP

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluated the microshear bond strength of a resin cement to Y-TZP after different methods of TiO₂ nanotubes (nTiO₂) incorporation on pre-sintered Y-TZP surfaces.

METHODS

nTiO₂ were synthesized and incorporated on Y-TZP slices as follows (n = 15): 1) nTiO₂ mixed with isopropyl alcohol/manual application (MAl); 2) nTiO₂ mixed with acetone/manual application (MAc); 3) nTiO₂ mixed with isopropyl alcohol/high-pressure vacuum application (HPVAl); 4) nTiO₂ mixed with acetone/high-pressure vacuum application (HPVAc). As controls, surfaces were sandblasted with Al₂O₃ (OX) or Rocatec silicatization (ROC). All ceramics were sintered after nTiO₂ incorporation. Surface treatments of OX and ROC were made after sintering. Surfaces were characterized by confocal laser microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Resin composite cylinders (1.40 mm diameter and 1 mm height) were cemented with a resin cement, stored in water at 37 °C for 24 h and thermocycled for 10 000 cycles before microshear bond strength evaluation. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Games-Howell (α = 0.05), and fracture analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope.

RESULTS

EDS confirmed the presence of TiO₂ on treated Y-TZP. The confocal analysis showed higher roughness for HPVAc and OX. There were significant differences between surface treatments (p < 0.001). HPVAl (22.96 ± 10.3), OX (34.16 ± 7.9) and ROC (27.71 ± 9.4) showed higher microshear bond strengths and were statistically similar (p > 0.05). MAC showed intermediary values, and HPVAc and MAl presented decreased bond strength, with a high percentage of premature debonding.

CONCLUSION

High-pressure vacuum application of nTiO₂ mixed with isopropyl alcohol was able to produce bond strength values compared to conventional air abrasion and Rocatec silicatization.

SIGNIFICANCE

The infiltration of TiO₂ nanostructures on the pre-sintered Y-TZP is an interesting approach that can improve bond strength without the need of sandblasting methods.

Artificial Solar Light-Driven APTES/TiO2 Photocatalysts for Methylene Blue Removal from Water

A visible-light photocatalytic performance of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-modified TiO2 nanomaterials obtained by solvothermal modification under elevated pressure, followed by calcination in an argon atmosphere at 800–1000 °C, is presented for the first time. The presence of silicon and carbon in the APTES/TiO2 photocatalysts contributed to the effective delay of the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation and the growth of the crystallites size of both polymorphous forms of TiO2 during heating. Thus, the calcined APTES-modified TiO2 exhibited higher pore volume and specific surface area compared with the reference materials. The change of TiO2 surface charge from positive to negative after the heat treatment increased the adsorption of the methylene blue compound. Consequently, due to the blocking of active sites on the TiO2 surface, the adsorption process negatively affected the photocatalytic properties. All calcined photocatalysts obtained after modification via APTES showed a higher dye decomposition degree than the reference samples. For all 3 modifier concentrations tested, the best photoactivity was noted for nanomaterials calcined at 900 °C due to a higher specific surface area than materials calcined at 1000 °C, and a larger number of active sites available on the TiO2 surface compared with samples annealed at 800 °C. It was found that the optimum concentration for TiO2 modification, at which the highest dye decomposition degree was noted, was 500 mM.

Extended Release of Metronidazole Drug Using Chitosan/Graphene Oxide Bionanocomposite Beads as the Drug Carrier

This study depicts the facile approach for the synthesis of chitosan/graphene oxide bionanocomposite (Chi/GO) beads via the gelation process. This is the first-ever study in which these Chi/GO beads have been utilized as a drug carrier for the oral drug delivery of metronidazole (MTD) drug, and investigations were made regarding the release pattern of the MTD drug using these Chi/GO beads as a drug carrier for a prolonged period of 84 h. The MTD is loaded on the surface as well as the cavity of the Chi/GO beads to result in MTD-Chi/GO bionanocomposite beads. The MTD drug loading was found to be 683 mg/g. Furthermore, the in vitro release patterns of pure drug and the drug encapsulated with Chi/GO beads are explored in simulated gastric as well as simulated intestinal fluids with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) of pH 1.2 and 7.4, respectively. As-synthesized bionanocomposite beads have shown excellent stability and capacity for extended release of the MTD drug as compared to the pure drug in terms of bioavailability in both media. The cumulative release data are fitted with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics and first-order reaction kinetics at pH 1.2 and 7.4. The synthesized bionanocomposite beads have good potential to minimize the multiple-dose frequency with the sustained drug release property and can reduce the side effects due to the drug.

Single cell encapsulation in a Pickering emulsion stabilized by TiO2 nanoparticles provides protection against UV radiation for a biopesticide

A new formulation for biological pest control with significant UV protection capability has been developed in this research. The formulation is based on individual encapsulation of fungal conidia in an oil/water Pickering emulsion. The droplets size of the emulsions was tuned to meet the demands of single conidia encapsulation in the oil droplets. The emulsions are stabilized by amine-functionalized TiO₂ (titania) nanoparticles (NPs). The droplet size, stability, and structure of the emulsions were investigated at different TiO₂ contents and oil/water phase ratios. Most of the emulsions remained stable for 6 months. The structural properties of the Pickering emulsions were characterized by confocal microscopy and high-resolution cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-HRSEM). The presence of the TiO₂ particles at the interface was confirmed by both confocal microscopy and cryo-HRSEM. Metarhizium brunneum-7 (Mb7) conidia were added to the emulsions. The successful encapsulation of individual conidia in the oil droplets was confirmed by confocal microscopy. The individual encapsulation of the conidia in the emulsions was significantly improved by dispersing the conidia in a 0.02 % Triton X-100 solution prior to emulsification. In addition, the bioassay results have shown, that exposure of the encapsulated conidia to natural UV light did not change their germination rates, however, the unprotected conidia demonstrated a dramatic decrease in their germination rates. These results confirm the UV protection capability of the studied emulsions.

Tuning the photoactivity of TiO2 nanoarchitectures doped with cerium or neodymium and application to colour removal from wastewaters

The impact of cerium (Ce) and neodymium (Nd) rare-earth metal doping of TiO₂ prepared by the hydrothermal method was investigated to tailor effective photocatalytic degradation of coloured wastewater under UV or visible illumination. The hydrothermal treatment of TiO₂ decreased the pH_pzc from 6.3 to 3.1-3.8 favouring the affinity for cationic water contaminants. Doping with Ce and Nd modified the crystallinity and the morphology of the photocatalysts and significantly increased the BET surface area and the adsorption capacity of cationic dyes. The photocatalytic activity under UV light irradiation decreased due to shielding of the catalyst active area by excessive amount of dye adsorbed. Conversely, the photocatalytic activity of the Ce and Nd doped TiO₂ increased under visible light irradiation by 1.2 times as a result of the dye photosensitization effect. It was demonstrated that two-steps dark adsorption and photocatalytic reaction or one-step simultaneous adsorption and reaction can produce significantly different results for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes in coloured waters, the rate being controlled by the competitive adsorption of the reacting organics and the H₂O/OH^- species. The reaction is driven by the radical oxygen species (ROS) formed on the catalyst surface the nature of which, differs under UV or visible light irradiation. The Ce-doped TiO₂ and Nd-doped TiO₂ photocatalysts with 0.5% rare-earth content were found to be efficient in the degradation of MB in aqueous solution, removing the colour and reducing the toxicity of wastewaters.

The Role of Adsorption in the Photocatalytic Decomposition of Dyes on APTES-Modified TiO2 Nanomaterials

This work investigated for the first time the role of adsorption in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and Orange II dyes in the presence of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-modified TiO2 nanomaterials. It has been demonstrated that the decrease in adsorption has a detrimental effect on photocatalytic activity. APTES/TiO2 photocatalysts were successfully prepared by solvothermal modification of TiO2 in a pressure autoclave, followed by heat treatment in an inert gas atmosphere at the temperature range from 300 °C to 900 °C. It was observed that functionalization of TiO2 via APTES effectively suppressed the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation, as well as the growth of crystallites size during calcination, and reduction of specific surface area (APTES modification inhibits sintering of crystallites). The noted alterations in the adsorption properties, observed after the calcination, were generally related to changes in the surface characteristics, mainly surface charges expressed by the zeta potential. Positively charged surface enhances adsorption of anionic dye (Orange II), while negatively charged surface was better for adsorption of cationic dye (methylene blue). The adsorption process substantially affects the efficiency of the photocatalytic oxidation of both dyes. The methylene blue decomposition proceeded according to the pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, while the degradation of Orange II followed the zero, pseudo-first, and pseudo-second order kinetic models.

Green synthesis of reusable super-paramagnetic diatomite for aqueous nickel (II) removal

Adsorption is an effective method for treating wastewater containing nickel due to its minimal equipment requirements and flexible operation. Therefore, an environmental friendly, inexpensive, efficient and recyclable adsorbent is needed. In this work, a reusable dual-functional super-paramagnetic adsorbent was prepared by combining APTES (3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium) with magnetic diatomite for the removal of Ni²⁺. It is named diatomite/CoFe₂O₄@APTES-EDTA (DECFASEs). The synthetic material was characterized and studied by XRD (X-ray Powder Diffractometer), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectrometer), VSM (Vibrating-Sample Magnetometer), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) method, Zeta potential analyzer and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), respectively. The performance of adsorption Ni²⁺ by DECFASEs was studied on effect of pH, reaction time and initial concentrations. The adsorption and desorption capacity and recyclability of the adsorbent material were estimated. A adsorption kinetic data had a significant correlation with the pseudo second-order kinetic and also adsorption isotherm data corresponded well with Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent material was 19.22 mg/g. The Ni²⁺ adsorption capacity of DECFASEs decreased slightly from 9.11 to 8.25 mg/g after 4 recycles. The XPS results of DECFASEs before and after Ni²⁺ uptake showed N and O participated in the complexation of Ni²⁺ in the adsorption process, which verified the chemical interaction between Ni²⁺ and DECFASEs. Modified-diatomite is a promising adsorbent for aqueous Ni²⁺ removal.

Recent advances in chemical surface modification of metal oxide nanoparticles with silane coupling agents: A review

Nowadays, metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been applied in various fields of nanotechnology including catalysis of chemical reactions, drug delivery, water treatment, textile industries, polymer composites, adhesives, and coatings. The greatest challenge in relation to metal oxide NPs is high tendency to aggregation. Chemical surface modification of metal oxide NPs has gained widely interest to control of dispersion and aggregation of NPs. Silane modifiers are one of the most important bifunctional modifiers that are frequently used for surface treatment of metal oxide NPs. In this review paper, we first focus on the synthesis, surface thermodynamic properties, surface modification techniques, and kinetic of silanization reaction of metal oxide NPs. Then, the recent development in using silane modifiers for treatment of metal oxide NPs in various applications were investigated. It was found that the unmodified NPs have high surface energy and are thermodynamically unstable. The thermodynamic properties of NPs including G_m^s, H_m^s, and S_m^sincrease with decreasing the particle size. Aggregation phenomena is the simple way to reduce the excess surface energy of NPs that leads to an increase in particle size. Therefore, the chemical surface modification of NPs using silane modifiers can be used as an effective method for the prevention of NPs agglomeration and improvement of NPs stability.

An all-natural bioinspired structural material for plastic replacement

Petroleum-based plastics are useful but they pose a great threat to the environment and human health. It is highly desirable yet challenging to develop sustainable structural materials with excellent mechanical and thermal properties for plastic replacement. Here, inspired by nacre’s multiscale architecture, we report a simple and efficient so called “directional deforming assembly” method to manufacture high-performance structural materials with a unique combination of high strength (281 MPa), high toughness (11.5 MPa m^1/2), high stiffness (20 GPa), low coefficient of thermal expansion (7 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹) and good thermal stability. Based on all-natural raw materials (cellulose nanofiber and mica microplatelet), the bioinspired structural material possesses better mechanical and thermal properties than petroleum-based plastics, making it a high-performance and eco-friendly alternative structural material to substitute plastics.

It is desirable yet challenging to develop sustainable structural materials to replace petroleum-based plastics. Here, the authors report a facile assembly method for manufacturing high-performance structural materials with a unique combination of high strength, toughness and stiffness.

Excellent UV Resistance of Polylactide by Interfacial Stereocomplexation with Double-Shell-Structured TiO2 Nanohybrids

The durable application of polylactide (PLA) under atmospheric conditions is restricted by its poor ultraviolet (UV) stability. To improve the UV stability of polymers, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is often used as a UV light capture agent. However, TiO₂ is also a photocatalytic agent, with detrimental effects on the polymer properties. To overcome these two conflicting issues, we used the following approach. TiO₂ nanoparticles were first coated with silicon dioxide (SiO₂) (with a SiO₂ shell content of 5.3 wt %). Subsequently, poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) was grafted onto TiO₂@SiO₂ nanoparticles, approximately 20 wt %, via a ring-opening polymerization of d-lactide to obtain well-designed double-shell TiO₂@SiO₂-g-PDLA nanohybrids. These double-shell nanoparticles could be well dispersed in a poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) matrix making use of the stereocomplexation between the two enantiomers. In our concept, the inner SiO₂ shell on the TiO₂ nanoparticles prevents the direct contact between TiO₂ and the PLLA matrix and hence considerably restricts the detrimental photocatalytic effect of TiO₂ on PLLA degradation. Additionally, the outer PDLA shell facilitates an improved dispersion of these nanohybrid particles by interfacial stereocomplexation with its enantiomer PLLA. As a consequence, the PLLA/TiO₂@SiO₂-g-PDLA nanocomposites simultaneously possess excellent UV-shielding property, high(er) tensile strength (>60 MPa), and superior UV resistance, for example, the mechanical properties remain at a level of >90% after 72 h of UV irradiation. In our view, this work provides a novel strategy to make advanced PLA nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties and excellent UV resistance, which enables potential application of PLA in more critical areas such as in durable packaging and fiber/textile applications.

Effect of the addition of functionalized TiO2 nanotubes and nanoparticles on properties of experimental resin composites

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of the addition of functionalized and non-functionalized TiO₂ nanostructures on properties of a resin composite.

METHODS

TiO₂ nanostructures were synthesized and functionalized, using 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTMS) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSMPM). Characterizations were performed with XRD, EDS, TEM, and TGA. Resin composites containing Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, CQ, DABE, and barium-aluminum silicate glass were produced according to TiO₂ nanostructure (nanotube or nanoparticle), concentration (0.3 or 0.9 wt%), and functionalization (APTMS or TSMPM). The resin composite without nanostructures was used as control. The amount of fillers was kept constant at 78.3 wt% for all materials. The degree of conversion (DC - at 0 h and 24 h), maximum polymerization rate (Rp_max), and Knoop microhardness (KHN before and after ethanol softening) were evaluated. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's HSD (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

TGA results demonstrated that functionalizations were effective for both nanostructures. For DC, resin composites, time and interaction effect were significant (p < 0.001). Higher DC was found for 0.3-wt%-functionalized-nanotubes at 24 h. For nanoparticles, only 0.9-wt%-non-functionalized and 0.3-wt%-APTMS-functionalized showed DC similar to the control and all other groups showed higher DC (p < 0.05). Rp_max was higher for 0.3-wt%-APTMS-nanotubes, which corresponded to higher DC after 24 h. The lowest Rp_max occurred for 0.9-wt%-TSMPM-nanotubes, which showed smaller DC at 0 h. For KHN, resin composites, ethanol softening and interaction effect were significant (p < 0.001). KHN decreased after ethanol softening all groups, except for 0.3-wt%-TSMPM-nanotubes, 0.9-wt%-TSMPM-nanotubes, and 0.3-wt%-non-functionalized-nanoparticles.

CONCLUSION

The resin with 0.3-wt%-TSMPM-nanotubes showed higher DC after 24 h, while being the most stable material after the ethanol softening.

SIGNIFICANCE

The addition of functionalized TiO₂ nanostructures in resin-based materials may improve the properties of the material.

Efficient Method for the Concentration Determination of Fmoc Groups Incorporated in the Core-Shell Materials by Fmoc-Glycine

In this paper, we described the synthesis procedure of TiO₂@SiO₂ core-shell modified with 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS). The chemical attachment of Fmoc-glycine (Fmoc-Gly-OH) at the surface of the core-shell structure was performed to determine the amount of active amino groups on the basis of the amount of Fmoc group calculation. We characterized nanostructures using various methods: transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the modification effectiveness. The ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) measurement was adopted for the quantitative determination of amino groups present on the TiO₂@SiO₂ core-shell surface by determination of Fmoc substitution. The nanomaterials were functionalized by Fmoc-Gly-OH and then the fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc) group was cleaved using 20% (v/v) solution of piperidine in DMF. This reaction led to the formation of a dibenzofulvene-piperidine adduct enabling the estimation of free Fmoc groups by measurement the maximum absorption at 289 and 301 nm using UV-vis spectroscopy. The calculations of Fmoc loading on core-shell materials was performed using different molar absorption coefficient: 5800 and 6089 dm³ × mol^-1 × cm^-1 for λ = 289 nm and both 7800 and 8021 dm³ × mol^-1 × cm^-1 for λ = 301 nm. The obtained results indicate that amount of Fmoc groups present on TiO₂@SiO₂-(CH₂)₃-NH₂ was calculated at 6 to 9 µmol/g. Furthermore, all measurements were compared with Fmoc-Gly-OH used as the model sample.

Facile synthesis of an aminopropylsilane layer on Si/SiO2 substrates using ethanol as APTES solvent

(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) is a commonly used organosilane on surface functionalization of silicon oxide surfaces. However, its deposition process from solution-phase usually involves the use of toluene, which has often been identified as crucial for the formation of an aminopropylsilane monolayer. Toluene is ranked as a problematic solvent in the guide developed by a group referred to as the solvent sub-team of CHEM21. In this work, we propose a facile synthetic route for functionalizing a silicon substrate with APTES via solution-phase approach using only solvents that are classified as recommended. The influence of the APTES concentration, reaction times and different post-deposition conditions using acetic acid and methanol were studied in order to evaluate the quality and thickness of the organosilane layers.•

Selective Electrochemical Capture and Release of Heparin Based on Amine-Functionalized Carbon/Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Arrays

Heparin (HEP) is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan that is a clinical anticoagulant agent. Commercially derived from porcine intestinal mucosa, HEP is challenging to separate from this complex biological mixture for additional purification. This study aimed to raise the purity of isolated HEP using electrochemical potential to increase its selective capture and release. We demonstrate an electrochemical platform featuring an anode composed of amine-functionalized carbon/titanium dioxide nanotube arrays on titanium foil (Ti/C-TNTAs-NH₂) and a cathode made of expanded graphite. Our results show that Ti and Ti/C-TNTAs control plates do not adsorb HEP, even while applying an external potential to the cell. However, when the Ti/C-TNTAs electrode is modified by 3 aminopropyltriethoxysilane, the terminal NH₂ groups provide a high density of positive charges that serve as binding sites, enabling the adsorption of HEP. This attraction is further strengthened by applying an external potential to the anode. Subsequent release of the HEP molecules and regeneration of the Ti/C-TNTAs-NH₂ electrode are easily accomplished by applying an anodic potential to the plate, as well as by increasing the concentration of NaCl in solution. This electrochemical system demonstrates the good selectivity of HEP, even within a mixture of other probable interfering species (e.g., bovine serum albumin and chondroitin sulfate). Additionally, it maintains 90.11% of its initial electrosorption efficiency after ten repeated HEP adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating this system's promising stability and reusability for HEP purification.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles-based colorimetric sensors for determination of hydrogen peroxide and triacetone triperoxide (TATP)

Due to its relatively simple preparation and readily available precursors, determination of triacetone triperoxide (TATP) by portable devices has become important. In this work, two different titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs)-based colorimetric sensors based on complex formation on the solid surface were developed for determination of H₂O₂ and TATP. The first sensor, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) modified-TiO₂NPs-based paper sensor (APTES@TiO₂NPs), exploits peroxo-titanate binary complex formation between APTES@TiO₂NPs and H₂O₂ on chromatographic paper. The second sensor, 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol-modified-TiO₂NPs-based solid sensor (PAR@TiO₂NPs), relies on the formation of a ternary complex between Ti(IV), PAR and H₂O₂. The developed sensors were also applied to TATP determination after acidic hydrolysis of samples to H₂O₂. The limits of detection (LODs) of APTES@TiO₂NPs-based paper sensor were 3.14 × 10^-4 and 5.13 × 10^-4 mol L^-1 for H₂O₂ and TATP, respectively, whereas the LODs of PAR@TiO₂NPs solid sensor were 6.06 × 10^-7 and 3.54 × 10^-7 mol L^-1 for H₂O₂ and TATP, respectively. Possible interferences of common soil ions, passenger belongings used as camouflage materials during public transport (e.g., detergent, sweetener, acetylsalicylic acid and paracetamol-caffeine based analgesic drugs) and of other explosives were examined. The developed methods were statistically validated using t- and F- tests against the titanyl sulfate (TiOSO₄) colorimetric literature method.

Self-Cleaning Ceramic Tiles Produced via Stable Coating of TiO₂ Nanoparticles

The high photocatalytic power of TiO₂ nanoparticles has drawn great attention in environmental and medical applications. Coating surfaces with these particles enables us to benefit from self-cleaning properties and decomposition of pollutants. In this paper, two strategies have been introduced to coat ceramic tiles with TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the self-cleaning effect of the surfaces on degradation of an organic dye under ultraviolent (UV) exposure is investigated. In the first approach, a simple one-step heat treatment method is introduced for coating, and different parameters of the heat treatment process are examined. In the second method, TiO₂ nanoparticles are first aminosilanized using (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) treatment followed by their covalently attachment onto CO₂ plasma treated ceramic tiles via N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) chemistry. We monitor TiO₂ nanoparticle sizes throughout the coating process using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and characterize developed surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, hydrophilicity of the coated surfaces is quantified using a contact angle measurement. It is shown that applying a one-step heat treatment process with the optimum temperature of 200 °C for 5 h results in successful coating of nanoparticles and rapid degradation of dye in a short time. In the second strategy, the APTES treatment creates a stable covalent coating, while the photocatalytic capability of the particles is preserved. The results show that coated ceramic tiles are capable of fully degrading the added dyes under UV exposure in less than 24 h.

Bioactive Potential of 3D-Printed Oleo-Gum-Resin Disks: B. papyrifera, C. myrrha, and S. benzoin Loading Nanooxides-TiO2, P25, Cu2O, and MoO3

This experimental study investigates the bioactive potential of filaments produced via hot melt extrusion (HME) and intended for fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing purposes. The oleo-gum-resins from benzoin, myrrha, and olibanum in pure state and also charged with 10% of metal oxide nanoparticles, TiO₂, P25, Cu₂O, and MoO₃, were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Disks were 3D-printed into model geometries (10 × 5 mm) and the disk-diffusion methodology was used for the evaluation of antimicrobial and antifungal activity of materials in study against the clinical isolates: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. Due to their intrinsic properties, disks containing resins in pure state mostly prevent surface-associated growth; meanwhile, disks loaded with 10% oxides prevent planktonic growth of microorganisms in the susceptibility assay. The microscopy analysis showed that part of nanoparticles was encapsulated by the biopolymeric matrix of resins, in most cases remaining disorderly dispersed over the surface of resins. Thermal analysis shows that plant resins have peculiar characteristics, with a thermal behavior similar to commercial available semicrystalline polymers, although their structure consists of a mix of organic compounds.

Higher UV-shielding ability and lower photocatalytic activity of TiO2@SiO2/APTES and its excellent performance in enhancing the photostability of poly(p-phenylene sulfide)

U–TiO₂ is successfully coated with SiO₂ and subsequently well modified by APTES, and a core–shell structure exists on TiO₂@SiO₂ and TiO₂@SiO₂/APTES, which greatly reduces aggregation of the TiO₂ nanoparticles.
