Abstract
In this study, we successfully synthesized well-defined polygonal gold microplates for the first time in an aqueous phase using hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). HEC played a pivotal role during the synthesis, acting not only as a biotemplate but also as an in situ reduction site for the nucleation and growth of gold (Au) microplates. H2O2 played a crucial role in accelerating the growth of Au microplates from the Au nucleus. This methodology is ecofriendly and easy to operate and has potential applications in various fields, such as electronics, photonics, and biotechnology.

Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious disease characterized by hemorrhage, edema, local ischemia and hypoxia, inflammatory reaction, and degeneration of the injured spinal cord, which lacks effective clinical treatments. We design a PEG-SH-GNPs-SAPNS@miR-29a delivery system to repair impaired spinal cord by building a regenerative microenvironment for the recruitment of endogenous neural stem cells. The miR-29a, as an axonal regeneration-related miRNA that overexpression of miR-29a significantly inhibits the expression of PTEN and promotes axonal regeneration of the injured spinal cord. The gold nanoparticles and self-assembling peptide hydrogel composite scaffold (PEG-SH-GNPs-SAPNS@miR-29a delivery system) applied to deliver miR-29a, which recruit endogenous neural stem cells simultaneously. Sustained release of miR-29a and recruitment of endogenous neural stem cells give rise to favorable axonal regeneration and recovery of motor function after spinal cord injury. These findings suggest that the PEG-SH-GNPs-SAPNS@miR-29a delivery system may be an alternative strategy for the treatment of SCI.

Abstract
Rice straw waste was used to extract natural cellulose fibers, which was then chemically converted to cellulose gel. Both extracted cellulose and modified cellulose (gel) were characterized using different techniques and used for biosorption of b+arium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, and cadmium. Both celluloses' chemical compositions were investigated. The FT-IR, XRD, TEM, and SEM results all support the success of the proposed chemical modification. Because of the increase in pore size within the gel composition, the metal sorption capability of the final chelating material (gel) was greater than that of extracted cellulose. The experimental data were fit to the sorption isotherm models of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin. This new modified biopolymer's behaviour suggested that it could be used as a promising sorbent for cation removal from polluted dye baths and waste water. Furthermore, this modified cellulose was prepared as cheap material extracted from the rise waste which helping in protection of the environment and it was confirm excellent behaviour in the removal heavy metals from their aqueous solution compared to the previous materials reported before.

Abstract
Green fabrication of unique structural nanoparticles has always been of increasing interest in many fields. Herein, a facile and green strategy of fabricating catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites using tea-polyphenols as reduction agent is reported. As-prepared nanocomposites have been characterized by a series of analysis. Physical characterizations show the synthesised of nanocomposites whose catkin-like special morphology. The electrochemical detection hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) results show that, catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites have good sensitivity, stability and anti-interference and it could detect without any additional mediator or enzyme. Specifically, it shows good H2O2 sensitivity of 2.55 μA mM-1cm-2 with range of 0.1-120 mM. Therefore, the catkin-like CuAg nanocomposites prepared by an environmental-friendly synthetic strategy, would provide a good reference for other green syntheses in the future.

Abstract
Antimicrobial alternatives such as nanoparticles are critically required to tackle bacterial infections, especially with the emerging threat of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to biosynthesize Au-Ag nanoparticles using propolis as a natural reducing agent and investigate their antibacterial activity against antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus sciuri (S. sciuri), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), and Salmonella enterica Typhimurium (S. enterica), besides demonstrating their anticancer activity in cancer cell lines. The biosynthesized Au@AgNPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Zeta potential, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Fourier Transformation Infrared (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the detection of antibacterial activity was assessed through disc diffusion, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), time-killing curve, and detection of cell membrane integrity via SEM. As a result, the UV-Vis spectrum revealed the formation of Au@AgNPs in a single peak between 533 and 555 nm. Furthermore, FTIR analysis confirmed nanoparticles' green synthesis due to the presence of carbon functional groups. The formulated Au@AgNPs showed antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The MIC and the MBC of P. aeruginosa and S. sciuri were 31.25 µg/mL. However, nanoparticles were more effective on S. enterica with MIC of 7.5 µg/mL and MBC of 15.6 µg/mL. Furthermore, the time-killing curve of the three model bacteria with the treatment was effective at 50 µg/mL. Besides, SEM of the tested bacteria indicated unintegrated bacterial cell membranes and damage caused by Au@AgNPs. Regarding the anticancer activity, the results indicated that the biosynthesized Au@AgNPs have a cytotoxic effect on HEPG2 cell lines. In conclusion, this research revealed that the green synthesized Au@AgNPs could be effective antibacterial agents against S. sciuri, P. aeruginosa, and S. enterica and anticancer agents against HEPG2.

Abstract
In this work, platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were synthesized by a modified polyol process using TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TOCN) as a stabilizing and co-reducing agent. Different ratios of TOCN nanocellulose to Pt4+ ions were studied to establish the optimum stabilizing effect of PtNPs. The effect of different pH of aqueous TOCN suspensions on the morphology of PtNPs was also examined. It was proved that PtNPs can be obtained solely in the presence of TOCN without the use of an additional reducing agent or ethylene glycol. The morphology and structural properties of the nanocellulose‑platinum nanoparticles composites were assessed using spectroscopic, microscopic and diffraction techniques, The catalytic performance in 4-nitrophenol reduction was evaluated. Significant differences in reaction rate constants k were found depending on the pH of the TOCN suspension applied during Pt4+ reduction. The crucial effect of reaction conditions on PtNPs performance was confirmed in tests of antibacterial efficacy against E. coli.

Abstract
A reductive filter paper for selective nitro reduction has been prepared by modification of a pristine cellulose filter paper by Pd/C nanoparticles, as a portable catalyst. The reaction was performed in two different set-ups including (i) filtration and (ii) sealed systems, in the presence of ammonium formate and ex situ generated hydrogen gas reducing agents, respectively. In the sealed system in the presence of H2 gas, the halogenated nitroarenes were completely reduced, while in the filtration system, different derivatives of the nitroarenes were selectively reduced to aryl amines. In both systems, the reduction of nitroarenes to aryl amines was performed with high efficiency and selectivity, comparable to a heterogeneous system. Reaction parameters were comprehensively designed using Design Expert software and then studied. The properties of the catalytic filter paper were studied in detail from the points of view of swellability, shrinkage, reusability, and stability against acidic, alkaline, and oxidative reagents. A novel and efficient catalytic filtration has been developed for the selective reduction of nitro compounds on a Pd/C-doped cellulose filter paper.![]()

Abstract
In this study, new stimuli - responsive hybrid hydrogels were achieved via succinylated cellulose nanocrystals (Su-CNC). The innovation was concerned with the inclusion of Su-CNC, at different degree of substitution (DS), into hydrogel network to render it pH and thermo-responsive characters through free radical polymerization reaction with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm). The prepared hydrogel was also examined for the in vitro release of Famotidine at different pH values. As clearly evident from the results, all the hydrogels prepared with different DS of Su-CNC, which were nominated as Su-CNC / PNIPAm (1-3), showed a high response to temperature change since their swelling behavior and hydrophilicity were decreased at 35 °C and upwards. This led to the more hydrophobicity character and thus the hydrogel shrinkage occurred. On the other hand, at pH 6, the hydrogels exhibited a significant Equilibrium Swelling Ratio (ESR) attaining 18.1, 17.3 and 16.8 (g/g) for Su-CNC / PNIPAm (1-3), respectively. However, Su-CNC / PNIPAm 2 hydrogel showed a significant response to the pH change from 8 to 2 which was advised to be selected as a potential pH responsive hydrogel for the in vitro Famotidine release.

The present study focused on a facile and green approach for the one-step synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded in hard wood bleached kraft fiber. The hydroxyl groups on the cellulose chain induced ionic silver reduction with additional hydrothermal energy, allowing for the in situ formation and deposition of AgNPs on the cellulose fiber. The white color of the bleached fiber transformed to yellow due to the formation of AgNPs. UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the AgNPs were uniformly distributed across the surface of the obtained cellulose fibers. The results indicated that the formation and distribution of AgNPs on surface of cellulose fibers was significantly influenced by the amount and concentration of silver nitrate (AgNO3). The antimicrobial activity of the cellulose-AgNP composite sheet against Escherichia coli was found to be inhibiting. These findings imply that cellulose-AgNP composite sheets can be feasibly used as antimicrobial paper for food packaging.

Abstract
In this paper, guar gum (GG) hydrogel has been successfully prepared by adding GG and Cu2+ mixture into an alkaline medium. The formation mechanism of the hydrogel has been investigated through various techniques. Results reveal GG facilitates the formation of ultrafine copper hydroxide clusters with a diameter of ∼3 nm. Moreover, these nanoclusters bring about a rapid gelling of GG within 10 ms. The synthesized hydrogel is applied to the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater. The hydrogel shows excellent removal efficiency in removing various heavy metal ions. Besides, the hydrogel derived porous carbon exhibits high specific capacitance (281 F/g at 1 A/g) and excellent rate capacity. The high contaminant removal efficiency character and excellent electrochemical performance endow GG hydrogel with potential applications in the environmental and energy storage field.

Abstract
Povidone-iodine (PI) is a common antiseptic reagent which is used for skin infections and wound healing. The control release of PI is quite important to heal the deep and intense wounds. Herein, the preparation of biodegradable pectin@carboxymethyl pullulan (Pe@CMP) hydrogel was carried out and applied for controllable release of PI. CMP was synthesized by interaction of monochloroacetic acid with pullulan at different ratios. The Pe@CMP hydrogel was then prepared by crosslinking of pectin with CMP in presence of glutaraldehyde as cross linker. After carboxymethylation, COOH contents were enlarged to be 24.2-51.2 mmol/kg and degree of substitution was 0.44-0.93. The rheological properties of Pe@CMP hydrogel were enlarged by increment of pectin ratio. Swelling ratio in water (16.0-18.0%) was higher than that of artificial sweat (11.7-13.2%). Pe@CMP hydrogel containing 20% pectin, exhibited the lowest release and 57.7% from PI was released within 360 min. The biological activity of the released PI was monitored to be highly efficient. The kinetic of release was fitted well to the first ordered reaction and Higuchi models. The mechanism of release was explained by the swelling of hydrogel. The networked structure of hydrogel was opened by swelling and PI was released from the outer pores followed by inner pores, achieving the controllable release.

Abstract
The compatibility of homo-metallic and hetero-metallic bio-composite was promisingly investigated as recyclable catalyst for prothiofos hydrolysis. Chitin as water insoluble biopolymer was functionalized as a template for generation of homo-metallic (Ag@chitin, Au@chitin and Pd@chitin) and hetero-metallic (Au@Ag@chitin, Pd@Ag@chitin and Pd@Au@Ag@chitin) composites, by using melt intercalation technique. Investigation of the compatibility of the synthesized homo-metallic and hetero-metallic bio-composites in hydrolysis of prothiofos was performed and affirmed via HPLC results. Immobilization of Pd in the composites showed perfection in the catalytic performance for prothiofos hydrolysis. Pd@Au@Ag@chitin exhibited the highest hydrolysis result of 99% for prothiofos was hydrolyzed within 150 min with rate constant (k1) of 24.48 min-1. After five recycles for Pd@Au@Ag@chitin, the hydrolysis of prothiofos was lowered from 346 mg/g to 269 mg/g with reduction percentage of 22%. The synthesized bio-composite was highly effective as recyclable catalyst and can be easily served in the remediation of pesticides.

Abstract
Depositing nanoparticles in textiles have been a promising strategy to achieve multifunctional materials. Particularly, antimicrobial properties are highly valuable due to the emergence of new pathogens and the spread of existing ones. Several methods have been used to functionalize textile materials with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Therefore, this review highlighted the most used methods for AuNPs preparation and the current studies on the topic in order to obtain AuNPs with suitable properties for antimicrobial applications and minimize the environmental concerns in their production. Reporting the detailed information on the functionalization of fabrics, yarns, and fibers with AuNPs by different methods to improve the antimicrobial properties was the central objective. The studies combining AuNPs and textile materials have opened valuable opportunities to develop antimicrobial materials for health and hygiene products, as infection control and barrier material, with improved properties. Future studies are needed to amplify the antimicrobial effect of AuNPs onto textiles and minimize the concerns related to the synthesis.

Abstract
This study introduces a new combined method of wood impregnation and chemical pulping processes leading to the production of superparamagnetic cellulose fibers with a magnetic nanoparticle-free outer surface. First, magnetic wood chips (MWCs) were prepared by in situ synthesizing of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles during the wood impregnation process. The MWCs were then converted into magnetic fibers by kraft pulping. The results showed that the resulting magnetic fibers had an outer surface comparable to that of non-magnetic fibers while showing superparamagnetic behavior. The XRD results confirmed that the in situ synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were magnetite. Papers made from the new type of magnetic cellulose fibers had much more desirable tensile properties, appearance, and printability than papers made from conventional magnetic cellulose fibers, comparable to those made from non-magnetic fibers.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used as engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in many advanced nanotechnologies, due to their versatile, easy and cheap preparations combined with peculiar chemical-physical properties. Their increased production and integration in environmental applications including water treatment raise concerns for their impact on humans and the environment. An eco-design strategy that makes it possible to combine the best material performances with no risk for the natural ecosystems and living beings has been recently proposed. This review envisages potential hybrid solutions of AgNPs for water pollution monitoring and remediation to satisfy their successful, environmentally safe (ecosafe) application. Being extremely efficient in pollutants sensing and degradation, their ecosafe application can be achieved in combination with polymeric-based materials, especially with cellulose, by following an eco-design approach. In fact, (AgNPs)-cellulose hybrids have the double advantage of being easily produced using recycled material, with low costs and possible reuse, and of being ecosafe, if properly designed. An updated view of the use and prospects of these advanced hybrids AgNP-based materials is provided, which will surely speed their environmental application with consequent significant economic and environmental impact.

Abstract
Noble bimetallic and trimetallic nanoparticles (NBT-NPs) have superior biomedical applications as compared to their monometallic counterparts. The performance of these nanomaterials depends on their composition, shape and size. Hence, the controlled-synthesis of these nanomaterials is a hot area of research. Till date, no review article in the literature accounts regarding the controlled-synthesis and biomedical applications related to morphology, optimum composition, biocompatibility and versatile chemistry of NBT-NPs. Taking this into contemplation, an effort was made to provide a clear insight into the morphology-controlled synthesis and size/shape-dependent anticancer and bactericidal applications of NBT-NPs. Chemical reduction method for the controlled-synthesis of NBT-NPs is reviewed critically. Furthermore, the potential role of various reaction parameters such as time, reducing agents, stabilizing/capping agents, nature/concentration of precursors, temperature and pH in the shape/size-controlled synthesis of these nanomaterials are discussed. In the second part of this article, anticancer and bactericidal applications of the NBT-NPs are reviewed and the influences of optimum composition, size, surface structure, versatile chemistry and synergism are studied. Finally, the current challenges in the controlled-synthesis and biomedical applications of these nanomaterials, and prospects to resolve related issues are discussed. HighlightsChemical reduction method for the synthesis of NBT-NPs is reviewed. The influences of parameters on the control synthesis of NBT-NPs are discussed.Antibacterial and anticancer applications and cytotoxicity of NBT-NPs are reviewed.Possible solutions for the key challenges are discussed.Outlooks about the synthesis and biomedical applications of NBT-NPs are discussed.

Abstract
Nanostructures have great potential in catalysis and their compositions may cause some interferences in the reactivity. Therefore, the present study focuses on comparison between three metallic nanoparticle-based Ag, Au, and Pd as nano-catalyst in reduction of aromatic pollutants. To neglect any interpenetration in their catalytic reactivity, the metallic nanoparticles were prepared via a consistent and reproducible one-step method with alkali-activated dextran. Interestingly, small sized/spherical AgNPs, AuNPs, and PdNPs were successively prepared with particle size of 3.4, 8.3, and 17.1 nm, respectively. The catalytic performance of the synthesized NPs was estimated for the reduction of p-nitroaniline and methyl red dye as different aromatic pollutants. Regardless of the particle size, there was a strong relation between catalytic action and the type of metal which followed the order of PdNP > AuNPs > AgNPs. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Amphiphilic cellulose derivatives were synthesized from allyl cellulose (AC) and cystein (Cys)/n-dodecyl mercaptan (NDM) via the thiol-ene click reactions. The derivatives were self-assembled into micelles in distilled water, and the micelles sizes increased with an increase of the DSNDM. The amphiphilic cellulose micelles were served as the soft templates for the controllable synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through the photo-reduction. Ag NPs were embedded and stabilized by the amphiphilic cellulose micelles, and their sizes increased from 3.1 to 14.4 nm with an increase of the original template sizes. The catalytic properties of the Ag-loaded micelles were evaluated by the reduction of p-nitropheonl to p-aminophenol. The results demonstrated that the Ag-loaded micelles exhibited excellent catalytic activity. The reduction followed the first-order rate law, and the reaction constant decreased with increasing size of Ag NPs. Moreover, the Ag-loaded micelles displayed good antimicrobial activities to both S. aureus and E. coli. Therefore, the Ag-loaded cellulose-based micelles have potential applications in various fields.

Abstract
A new bio-based bilateral hydrogel containing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) was prepared for the wastewater remediation. The obtained CMC/PAM composite hydrogel reveals a strong single-ion affinity for copper (CuII), lead (PbII) and cadmium (CdII) ions, as well as multi-ion absorbability with its equilibrium data following the Langmuir adsorption model and its adsorption process abiding by a pseudo-second-order kinetics. To demonstrate its recycled use for the metal ions, the adsorbed CuII ions in the hydrogel were reduced in situ to form homogeneously dispersed Cu nanoparticles (NPs), leading to the Cu NPs-loaded CMC/PAM hydrogel. Reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol with high efficiency was successfully achieved by this Cu NPs-loaded CMC/PAM hydrogel, verifying the hydrogel's dual functionalities towards the wastewater treatment and catalytic application.

Abstract
Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is a unique material obtained from naturally occurring cellulose fibers. Owing to their mechanical, optical, chemical, and rheological properties, CNC gained significant interest. Herein, we investigate the potential of commercially non-recyclable wood waste, in particular, sawdust as a new resource for CNC. Isolation of CNC from sawdust was conducted as per acid hydrolysis which induced by ultrasonication technique. Thus, sawdust after being alkali delignified prior sodium chlorite bleaching, was subjected to sulfuric acid with concentration of 65% (w/w) at 60°C for 60min. After complete reaction, CNC were collected by centrifugation followed by dialyzing against water and finally dried via using lyophilization technique. The CNC yield attained values of 15% from purified sawdust. Acid hydrolysis mechanism exactly referred that, the amorphous regions along with thinner as well as shorter crystallites spreaded throughout the cellulose structure are digested by the acid leaving CNC suspension. The latter was freeze-dried to produce CNC powder. A thorough investigation pertaining to nanostructural characteristics of CNC was performed. These characteristics were monitored using TEM, SEM, AFM, XRD and FTIR spectra for following the changes in functionality. Based on the results obtained, the combination of sonication and chemical treatment was great effective in extraction of CNC with the average dimensions (diameter×length) of 35.2±7.4nm×238.7±81.2nm as confirmed from TEM. Whilst, the XRD study confirmed the crystal structure of CNC is obeyed cellulose type I with crystallinity index ∼90%. Cellulose nanocrystals are nominated as the best candidate within the range studied in the area of reinforcement by virtue of their salient textural features.
