Novel multi-functional microsphere scaffold with shape memory function for bone regeneration

Irregular bone defects caused by trauma and bone diseases provide a complex implant environment for surgery. Traditional implants often fail to integrate well with the surrounding bone defect interface, therefore, developing an artificial bone scaffold that can adapt to irregular bone defect boundaries is of significant importance for bone defect repair. This study successfully utilized a shape memory ternary copolymer polylactic acid-trimethylene carbonate-hydroxyacetic acid (PLLA-TMC-GA) and dopamine-modified nano-hydroxyapatite (PHA) composite to construct a temperature-responsive bone repair scaffold (PTG/PHA), thereby enhancing the interface compatibility between the implant and the surrounding environment. The addition of PHA has effectively improved the hydrophilicity of the stent and significantly increased its mechanical strength. Furthermore, the Sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel loaded with Icariin (Ica) coated on the stent surface promotes the growth and differentiation of bone cells through the drug-scaffold synergistic effect. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments have shown that the synergistic effect of the composite stent with Icariin significantly enhances the repair of bone defects. This study provides a promising tissue engineering method for the repair of irregular bone defects.

Multi-functional dual-layer nanofibrous membrane for prevention of postoperative pancreatic leakage

Postoperative pancreatic leakage due to pancreatitis in patients is a life-threatening surgical complication. The majority of commercial barriers are unable to meet the demands for pancreatic leakage due to poor adhesiveness, toxicity, and inability to degrade. In this study, we fabricated mitomycin-c and thrombin-loaded multifunctional dual-layer nanofibrous membrane with a combination of alginate, PCL, and gelatin to resolve the leakage due to suture line disruption, promote hemostasis, wound healing, and prevent postoperative tissue adhesion. Electrospinning was used to fabricate the dual-layer system. The study results demonstrated that high gelatin and alginate content in the inner layer decreased the fiber diameter and water contact angle, and crosslinking allowed the membrane to be more hydrophilic, making it highly biodegradable, and adhering firmly to the tissue surfaces. The results of in vitro biocompatibility and hemostatic assay revealed that the dual-layer had a higher cell proliferation and showed effective hemostatic properties. Moreover, the in vivo studies and in silico molecular simulation indicated that the dual layer was covered at the wound site, prevented suture disruption and leakage, inhibited hemorrhage, and reduced postoperative tissue adhesion. Finally, the study results proved that dual-layer multifunctional nanofibrous membrane has a promising therapeutic potential in preventing postoperative pancreatic leakage.

Enhanced dye sequestration with natural polysaccharides-based hydrogels: A review

Due to the expansion of industrial activities, the concentration of dyes in water has been increasing. The dire need to remove these pollutants from water has been heavily discussed. This study focuses on the reproducible and sustainable solution for wastewater treatment and dye annihilation challenges. Adsorption has been rated the most practical way of the several decolorization procedures due to its minimal initial investment, convenient utility, and high-performance caliber. Hydrogels, which are three-dimensional polymer networks, are notable because of their potential to regenerate, biodegrade, absorb bulky amounts of water, respond to stimuli, and have unique morphologies. Natural polysaccharide hydrogels are chosen over synthetic ones because they are robust, bioresorbable, non-toxic, and cheaply accessible. This study has covered six biopolymers, including chitosan, cellulose, pectin, sodium alginate, guar gum, and starch, consisting of their chemical architecture, origins, characteristics, and uses. The next part describes these polysaccharide-based hydrogels, including their manufacturing techniques, chemical alterations, and adsorption effectiveness. It is deeply evaluated how size and shape affect the adsorption rate, which has not been addressed in any prior research. To assist the readers in identifying areas for further research in this subject, limitations of these hydrogels and future views are provided in the conclusion.

Electrospinning and electrospun polysaccharide-based nanofiber membranes: A review

The electrospinning technology has set off a tide and given rise to the attention of a widespread range of research territories, benefiting from the enhancement of nanofibers which made a spurt of progress. Nanofibers, continuously produced via electrospinning technology, have greater specific surface area and higher porosity and play a non-substitutable key role in many fields. Combined with the degradability and compatibility of the natural structure characteristics of polysaccharides, electrospun polysaccharide nanofiber membranes gradually infiltrate into the life field to help filter air contamination particles and water pollutants, treat wounds, keep food fresh, monitor electronic equipment, etc., thus improving the life quality. Compared with the evaluation of polysaccharide-based nanofiber membranes in a specific field, this paper comprehensively summarized the existing electrospinning technology and focused on the latest research progress about the application of polysaccharide-based nanofiber in different fields, represented by starch, chitosan, and cellulose. Finally, the benefits and defects of electrospun are discussed in brief, and the prospects for broadening the application of polysaccharide nanofiber membranes are presented for the glorious expectation dedicated to the progress of the eras.

Catecholamines polymerization crosslinking for alginate-based burn wound dressings developed with ciprofloxacin and zinc oxide interactions

There is an increasing demand for stable and durable wound dressings to treat burn injuries and infections. Bioactive electrospun nanofibrous mats with antibacterial properties are promising for wound dressing usage. Electrospinning of biopolymers for wound dressing applications needs post-spinning crosslinking to prevent mat dissolution in moist wound environments. Here, we prepared durable wound dressing by using the Dopamine (DA) polymerization crosslinking in Alginate (ALG)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous mats, which are developed by Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Zinc oxide (ZO). The nanofibrous mats were investigated by FESEM, FTIR, mechanical strength, water contact angle, degradation, degree of swelling, and WVTR tests. The analyses demonstrate the nanofibrous mats with uniform and unbranched fibers, with a hydrophilic nature, which was porous, durable, and stable. Also, it showed the CIP and ZO addition enhanced their durability by crosslinking reinforcement. In addition, the drug release and antibacterial assays demonstrated the pH-sensitive release with more drug release at higher pH (bacterial invasion) and impressive antibacterial activity (up to 99 %). In the burn wound model in rats, the ALG/PVA/DA/CIP/ZO nanofibrous mats displayed excellent wound healing ability in wound closure and tissue regeneration. Also, complete re-epithelization and remodeling and highest collagen synthesis in histological assessment.

Modified alginate materials for wastewater treatment: Application prospects

Sodium alginate is a natural macromolecule widely used because of its abundance, low cost of acquisition, and rich hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the matrix. The physical modification of sodium alginate can be made by blending it with polymer materials. The so-yielded alginate complex is commonly unstable in an aqueous environment due to alginate backbones' high hydrophilicity. The chemical modification can remove its hydrophilic groups and introduce special functional groups or polymers onto the alginate backbones to provide excess reaction sites for specific reactions and effective complexation sites for accommodating antibiotics, dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. Sodium alginate has been used in water treatment engineering under revised modification protocols. This article also reviews the latest modification protocols for sodium alginate and outlines the novel application of the modified materials. The limitations of modified sodium alginate materials are described, and research prospects are put forward.

Bovine Serum Albumin Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensors Modified by Carboxylated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes/CaAlg Hydrogels

In this paper, sodium alginate (NaAlg) was used as functional monomers, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as template molecules, and calcium chloride (CaCl2) aqueous solution was used as a cross-linking agent to prepare BSA molecularly imprinted carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CMWCNT)/CaAlg hydrogel films (MIPs) and non-imprinted hydrogel films (NIPs). The adsorption capacity of the MIP film for BSA was 27.23 mg/g and the imprinting efficiency was 2.73. The MIP and NIP hydrogel film were loaded on the surface of the printed electrode, and electrochemical performance tests were carried out by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using the electrochemical workstation. The loaded MIP film and NIP film effectively improved the electrochemical signal of the bare carbon electrode. When the pH value of the Tris HCl elution solution was 7.4, the elution time was 15 min and the adsorption time was 15 min, and the peak currents of MIP-modified electrodes and NIP-modified electrodes reached their maximum values. There was a specific interaction between MIP-modified electrodes and BSA, exhibiting specific recognition for BSA. In addition, the MIP-modified electrodes had good anti-interference, reusability, stability, and reproducibility. The detection limit (LOD) was 5.6 × 10-6 mg mL-1.

Ethanol-free Cross-Linking of Alginate Nanofibers Enables Controlled Release into a Simulated Gastrointestinal Tract Model

The use of alginate nanofibers in certain biomedical applications, including targeted delivery to the gut, is limited because an ethanol-free, biocompatible cross-linking method has not been demonstrated. Here, we developed water-stable, alginate-based nanofibers by systematically exploring post-electrospinning cross-linking approaches that used calcium ions dissolved in (1) a glycerol/water cosolvent system and (2) acidic, neutral, or basic aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy proved that the fibers cross-linked in a glycerol cosolvent or pH-optimized solutions had maintained the same morphology as the ethanol-based literature control. Notably, cross-linked fibers were generally smaller in diameter than the as-spun fibers due to both chemical interactions and mass loss during cross-linking, which was supported by mass measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. During stability tests wherein the cross-linked fibers were exposed to three aqueous solutions, the cross-linked fibers were stable in water and acid buffer yet swelled in phosphate buffer saline, making them useful scaffolds for pH-controlled release applications. Proof-of-concept release experiments were conducted using a simulated gastrointestinal tract model. As desired, the cargo remained encapsulated within the cross-linked nanofibers when exposed to an acidic solution that modeled the stomach. Upon exposure to a solution that mimicked the intestines, the cargo was released. We suggest that these cross-linked, alginate-based nanofiber mats hold the potential to be broadly used in biomedical and environmental applications.

Electrospinning Novel Sodium Alginate/MXene Nanofiber Membranes for Effective Adsorption of Methylene Blue

Understanding how to develop highly efficient and robust adsorbents for the removal of organic dyes in wastewater is crucial in the face of the rapid development of industrialization. Herein, d-Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets (MXene) were combined with sodium alginate (SA), followed by electrospinning and successive Ca²⁺-mediated crosslinking, giving rise to a series of SA/MXene nanofiber membranes (NMs). The effects of the MXene content of the NMs on the adsorption performance for methylene blue (MB) were investigated systemically. Under the optimum MXene content of 0.74 wt.%, SA/MXene NMs possessed an MB adsorption capacity of 440 mg/g, which is much higher than SA/MXene beads with the same MXene content, pristine MXene, or electrospinning SA NMs. Furthermore, the optimum SA/MXene NMs showed excellent reusability. After the adsorbent was reused ten times, both the MB adsorption capacity and removal rate could remain at 95% of the levels found in the fresh samples, which indicates that the electrospinning technique has great potential for developing biomass-based adsorbents with high efficiency.

Synthesis of oxidized sodium alginate and its electrospun bio-hybrids with zinc oxide nanoparticles to promote wound healing

Electrospun fibers provide a promising platform for wound healing; however, they lack requisite characteristics for wound repair, including antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and angiogenic ability. Sodium alginate (SA) is being used for different types of applications. However, the poor spinnability of SA restricts its applications. The objectives of this study were three-fold: a) to synthesize oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) to improve its spinnability, b) to fabricate composite fibrous membranes by blending OSA along with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), and c) to decipher antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as biocompatibility of membranes in vitro and in vivo. OSA displaying different oxidation degrees (Dox (%)) was synthesized by varying the molar ratio of sodium periodate to SA. OSA (Dox, ∼48 %) afforded smooth and uniform fibers; 0.5 wt% of adipic dihydrazide (ADH) evolved into structurally stable and water-insoluble membranes. Composite fibrous membranes containing 2 wt% of ZnO-NPs displayed good biocompatibility and bactericidal effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in vitro. In addition, composite membranes showed remarkable epithelialization, neovascularization, and anti-inflammatory response than that of the membranes devoid of ZnO-NPs. Conclusively, these composite fibrous membranes may have broad implications for wound healing applications.

Fenton degradation of ofloxacin antibiotic using calcium alginate beads impregnated with Fe3O4-montmorillonite composite

The primary aim of this study is to develop an economical, stable, and effective heterogeneous catalyst for wastewater remediation via the Fenton oxidation process. For this purpose, Fe₃O₄-montmorillonite alginate (FeMA) composite beads were synthesized by entrapping Fe₃O₄-montmorillonite in calcium alginate beads. The performance of the catalysts was evaluated via the Fenton degradation of ofloxacin (OFL), an antibiotic that is frequently detected in water bodies. The physiochemical properties of the FeMA composite beads were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray (FESEM/EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FeMA composite beads were found to have a higher surface area, higher porosity, and better thermal stability compared to pristine alginate beads. The composite beads were subsequently used for Fenton degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) in an aqueous solution. The effects of Fe₃O₄-montmorillonite loading on alginate, FeMA composite beads dosage, initial solution pH, initial OFL concentration, different oxidants, H₂O₂ dosage, reaction temperature, and inorganic salts on Fenton degradation of OFL in aqueous solution was investigated. The results revealed that the percentage of OFL degradation reached about 80 % under optimized conditions, while the total organic carbon (TOC) removal reached about 53 %. The entrapment of Fe₃O₄-montmorillonite in alginate beads results in less iron ions leaching compared to previous observation, and the efficiency remains constant over the five cycles investigated. The kinetics of the Fenton degradation process are best fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. It is therefore believed that FeMA composite beads can be a promising material for wastewater remediation via the Fenton oxidation process.

Eco-Friendly OSN Membranes Based on Alginate Salts with Variable Nanofiltration Properties

In this work, membranes for organic solvents nanofiltration (OSN) based on a natural polymer, sodium alginate, were fabricated. They are chemically stable in organic solvents, including aprotic polar solvents. The unique advantage of these membranes is the absence of toxic reagents and solvents during their production. This ensures the safety and environmental friendliness of the production process. It has been shown that an operation as simple as changing the cation in alginate (Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, Zn²⁺, Ca²⁺) makes it possible to control the transport and separating properties of membranes, depending on the organic solvent being separated. Therefore, to isolate RemazolBrilliant Blue with MM = 626 g·mol^-1 from ethanol, membranes based on iron alginate with a rejection R = 97% and a permeability of 1.5 kg·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1 are the most efficient. For isolation of the same solute from DMF and MP, membranes based on calcium alginate with an R of about 90% and a permeability of 0.1-0.2 kg·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1 are the most efficient. The resulting membranes based on natural biodegradable sodium alginate are competitive compared to membranes based on synthetic polymers.

Noval green sodium alginate/gellan gum aerogel with 3D hierarchical porous structure for highly efficient and selective removal of Congo red from water

Rational design of adsorbed materials with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure, sustainable, high adsorption capacity, and excellent selective is of great significance in practical applications. Herein, a novel aerogel adsorbed material with 3D hierarchical porous architecture was fabricated by employing naturally abundant sodium alginate (SA)/gellan gum (GG) as basic construction blocks to achieve sustainability as well as applying polyethyleneimine (PEI) as functional material for highly efficient and selective capture of Congo red (CR). The aerogel sorbent exhibited strong microstructure, numerous active adsorption sites and being ultralight. The resulting aerogel adsorbent showed high adsorption capacity (3017.23 mg/g) toward CR, exceedingly most previously reported sorbents. Furthermore, the aerogel adsorbent was accompanied by outstanding selectivity for CR in four binary dye systems. Meanwhile, after 3 cycles, the adsorption capacity decreased by 14.8 %, but still maintained the adsorption capacity of 559.79 mg/g. Therefore, excellent adsorption performance, and superb selectivity prefigures its great prospects for wastewater purification.

Thermally Treated Berberine-Loaded SA/PVA/PEO Electrospun Microfiber Membranes for Antibacterial Wound Dressings

This study aimed to develop a safe and advanced antibacterial material of electrospun microfiber membranes (MFMs) for wound dressings. Combinations of several materials were investigated; thermal treatment and electrospinning techniques were used to form the best quality of MFMs to suit its end applications. By comparing the fiber morphology, diameter changes, and fracture strength, the suitable ratio of raw materials and thermal treatment were obtained before and after adding Trition X-100 as a surfactant for MFMs of sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide (SA/PVA/PEO). The electrospinning solution was mixed with berberine as an antibacterial substance; meanwhile, calcium chloride (CaCl₂) was used as the crosslinking agent. The antibacterial properties, water dissolution resistance, water content, and fracture strength were thoroughly investigated. The results showed that the antibacterial rates of MFMs with different mass fractions of berberine (0, 3, and 5 wt.%) to Escherichia coli (E. coli) were 14.7, 92.9, and 97.2%, respectively. The moisture content and fracture strength of MFMs containing 5 wt.% berberine were 72.0% and 7.8 MPa, respectively. In addition, the produced MFMs embodied great water dissolution resistance. Berberine-loaded SA/PVA/PEO MFMs could potentially serve as an antibacterial wound dressing substrate with low cost and small side effects.

Facile Synthesis and Life Cycle Assessment of Highly Active Magnetic Sorbent Composite Derived from Mixed Plastic and Biomass Waste for Water Remediation

Plastic and biomass waste pose a serious environmental risk; thus, herein, we mixed biomass waste with plastic bottle waste (PET) to produce char composite materials for producing a magnetic char composite for better separation when used in water treatment applications. This study also calculated the life cycle environmental impacts of the preparation of adsorbent material for 11 different indicator categories. For 1 functional unit (1 kg of pomace leaves as feedstock), abiotic depletion of fossil fuels and global warming potential were quantified as 7.17 MJ and 0.63 kg CO₂ equiv for production of magnetic char composite materials. The magnetic char composite material (MPBC) was then used to remove crystal violet dye from its aqueous solution under various operational parameters. The kinetics and isotherm statistical theories showed that the sorption of CV dye onto MPBC was governed by pseudo-second-order, and Langmuir models, respectively. The quantitative assessment of sorption capacity clarifies that the produced MPBC exhibited an admirable ability of 256.41 mg g^-1. Meanwhile, the recyclability of 92.4% of MPBC was demonstrated after 5 adsorption/desorption cycles. Findings from this study will inspire more sustainable and cost-effective production of magnetic sorbents, including those derived from combined plastic and biomass waste streams.

Preparation and performance evaluation of chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone/polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofiber membrane for heavy metal ions and organic pollutants removal

In this work, a novel electrospun chitosan (CS)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous membrane was prepared to remove heavy metal ions and organic pollutants from water. The nanofiber morphologies were adjusted through the optimal electrospinning process parameters. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterizations indicated that a well-crosslinked CS/PVP/PVA nanofiber film was formed. Under the optimize conditions, the obtained CS/PVP/PVA nanofiber membranes exhibited porous and uniform nanofibrous structures with an average diameter of 160 nm and a pure water permeability of 4518.91 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1. In addition, the adsorption and separation performance of CS/PVP/PVA nanofiber membranes were evaluated with Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Methylene Blue (MB), Malachite Green (MG) as target ions and dyes. The results showed that the retention rate of CS/PVP/PVA nanofiber membranes for Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), MG and MB can reach 94.20%, 90.35%, 83.33%, 80.12%, 84.01% and 69.91%, respectively. The adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), MG and MB were 34.79, 25.24, 18.07, 16.05, 17.86 and 13.27 mg g^-1. The adsorption kinetics of heavy metal ions and dyes by the nanofiber membranes can be explained by the Langmuir isotherm model and represented by the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism that determined the spontaneous chemisorption process. This study provides a synthetic approach to membranes for the removal of organic and heavy metal micropollutants from water.

New alginic acid derivatives ester for methylene blue dye adsorption: kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic, and mechanism study

In this paper, the application of ester materials prepared by grafting different carbon chain lengths of diols in alginic acid (AA) by a simple, fast and efficient method for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) is studied. The AA ester derivatives are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Zeta potential before and after MB adsorption. This study shows a significant improvement in the adsorption capacity of MB by AA after its esterification with a Q_max value up to 454.545 mg/g for the best adsorbent "Poly(AA-g-EG)". The experimental data are studied according to two isothermal models (Langmuir and Freundlich) and two kinetic models (pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion). The adsorption of MB is also evaluated thermodynamically. An adsorption mechanism of MB is established.

3D-Printed, Dual Crosslinked and Sterile Aerogel Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

The fabrication of bioactive three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel scaffolds from biocompatible materials with a complex inner structure (mesoporous and macroporous) and highly interconnected porosity is crucial for bone tissue engineering (BTE). 3D-printing technology combined with aerogel processing allows the fabrication of functional nanostructured scaffolds from polysaccharides for BTE with personalized geometry, porosity and composition. However, these aerogels are usually fragile, with fast biodegradation rates in biological aqueous fluids, and they lack the sterility required for clinical practice. In this work, reinforced alginate-hydroxyapatite (HA) aerogel scaffolds for BTE applications were obtained by a dual strategy that combines extrusion-based 3D-printing and supercritical CO₂ gel drying with an extra crosslinking step. Gel ageing in CaCl₂ solutions and glutaraldehyde (GA) chemical crosslinking of aerogels were performed as intermediate and post-processing reinforcement strategies to achieve highly crosslinked aerogel scaffolds. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption (BET) and SEM analyses were performed to assess the textural parameters of the resulting alginate-HA aerogel scaffolds. The biological evaluation of the aerogel scaffolds was performed regarding cell viability, hemolytic activity and bioactivity for BTE. The impact of scCO₂-based post-sterilization treatment on scaffold properties was also assessed. The obtained aerogels were dual porous, bio- and hemocompatible, as well as endowed with high bioactivity that is dependent on the HA content. This work is a step forward towards the optimization of the physicochemical performance of advanced biomaterials and their sterilization.

A novel organometallic magnesium complexes with aggregation induced emission properties: synthesis, characterization, and fluorescent fibres applications

In this work, a novel organomagnesium complex with outstanding aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties was synthesized using dibenzoylmethane (DBM) as the ligand. The structure of the complex was confirmed to be one magnesium ion coordinated to the diones groups of two DBM molecules, and the magnesium ion adopted a distorted octahedrally geometry. The obvious emission was found for Mg(DBM) 2 powder and not in the solution, which was the first reported organomagnesium complex with AIE property. The properties of complexes were investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory calculations. Moreover, the Mg(DBM) 2 solution dispersed in fifilter paper was nearly colorless, which could be made into a convenient anti-counterfeiting and encryption tool. Mg(DBM) 2 /alginate fibres were prepared by wet-spinning process and further processed into paper, which could be used in the fields of sensor, anti-counterfeiting and encryption. Sweat contains a wealth of chemical information that could potentially indicate the body's deeper biomolecular state. The prepared fluorescent fibres were used to detect sweat due to its non-toxic, low-cost efficient and fast response to analytes.

Electrospinning SA@PVDF-HFP Core-Shell Nanofibers Based on a Visual Light Transmission Response to Alcohol for Intelligent Packaging

A naked-eye detector based on a rapid transmittance response to alcohol was designed to offer real-time and reusable detection of fruit freshness. To ensure the hydrophobicity of the fibrous membrane and high light transmission response to alcohol, fluorine-rich poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) with a low refractive index was selected as the shell layer, while sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were selected as the core layer for coaxial electrospinning. The core-shell fibrous detector was obtained by treatment with CaCl₂ to form a stable hydrogel and by water flushing to remove PVA. The interior structure of the fiber and its evolution were investigated with increasing SA concentration, which changed from a nonconcentric structure to a core-shell structure. Without SA, nonconcentric structured fibers were obtained due to high flowability and incompatibility between the organic solvent phase of PVDF-HFP and the aqueous phase of PVA. As the SA concentration increased, the enhanced viscosity and surface tension decreased the asymmetric mobility significantly, which competed with the charge attractive forces from the Taylor cone surface, leading to a core-shell structure. The as-spun membranes were opaque due to light scattering at the interface between air and fiber and became light transparent after immersion in a rotten fruit-containing alcohol and acetic acid due to a decreased light loss. The rapidly responsive, reusable fibrous membranes with over 90% light transparency developed here have high potential for application in visual intelligent packaging to monitor the freshness of fruits and vegetables.

Study of the water sorption and barrier performances of potato starch nano-biocomposites based on halloysite nanotubes

The barrier performances, in terms of water vapor sorption properties, gas and water barrier performances were analyzed on different starch-based nano-biocomposites. These multiphase systems were elaborated by melt blending starch and halloysite nanotubes at different contents with different plasticizers (glycerol, sorbitol and a mix of both polyols). The influence of the composition was investigated onto the structure, morphology, water sorption and barrier performances. As recently reported, halloysite nanoclay is a promising clay to enhance the properties of plasticized starch matrix. The barrier performances of nanofilled starch-based films were examined through gas and water permeabilities, diffusivity and water affinity. Glycerol-plasticized starch films give fine and more homogeneous nanofiller dispersion with good interfacial interactions, compared to sorbitol ones (alone or mixed), due to stronger and more stable hydrogen bonds. Tortuosity effects linked to the halloysite nanotubes were evidenced by gas transfer analysis, and exacerbated by the good interactions at interfaces and the resulting good filler dispersion. The influence of morphology and interfacial interactions towards water affinity was highlighted by moisture barrier properties. This was a key factor on the reduction of water diffusion and uptake with nanoclay content. A preferential water transfer was observed as a function of a plasticizer type in relation with the phenomenon of water plasticization in the nanocomposite systems.

Recent Advances in Functional Polymer Materials for Energy, Water, and Biomedical Applications: A Review

Academic research regarding polymeric materials has been of great interest. Likewise, polymer industries are considered as the most familiar petrochemical industries. Despite the valuable and continuous advancements in various polymeric material technologies over the last century, many varieties and advances related to the field of polymer science and engineering still promise a great potential for exciting new applications. Research, development, and industrial support have been the key factors behind the great progress in the field of polymer applications. This work provides insight into the recent energy applications of polymers, including energy storage and production. The study of polymeric materials in the field of enhanced oil recovery and water treatment technologies will be presented and evaluated. In addition, in this review, we wish to emphasize the great importance of various functional polymers as effective adsorbents of organic pollutants from industrial wastewater. Furthermore, recent advances in biomedical applications are reviewed and discussed.

Sustainable Treatment of Food Industry Wastewater Using Membrane Technology: A Short Review

Water is needed for food processing facilities to carry out a number of tasks, including moving goods, washing, processing, and cleaning operations. This causes them to produce wastewater effluent, and they are typically undesirable since it contains a high volume of suspended solids, bacteria, dyestuffs, salts, oils, fats, chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand. Therefore, treatment of food industry wastewater effluent is critical in improving process conditions, socio-economic benefits and our environmental. This short review summarizes the role of available membrane technologies that have been employed for food wastewater treatment and analyse their performance. Particularly, electrospun nanofiber membrane technology is revealed as an emerging membrane science and technology area producing materials of increasing performance and effectiveness in treating wastewater. This review reveals the challenges and perspectives that will assist in treating the food industry wastewater by developing novel membrane technologies.

What We Are Learning from COVID-19 for Respiratory Protection: Contemporary and Emerging Issues

Infectious respiratory diseases such as the current COVID-19 have caused public health crises and interfered with social activity. Given the complexity of these novel infectious diseases, their dynamic nature, along with rapid changes in social and occupational environments, technology, and means of interpersonal interaction, respiratory protective devices (RPDs) play a crucial role in controlling infection, particularly for viruses like SARS-CoV-2 that have a high transmission rate, strong viability, multiple infection routes and mechanisms, and emerging new variants that could reduce the efficacy of existing vaccines. Evidence of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmissions further highlights the importance of a universal adoption of RPDs. RPDs have substantially improved over the past 100 years due to advances in technology, materials, and medical knowledge. However, several issues still need to be addressed such as engineering performance, comfort, testing standards, compliance monitoring, and regulations, especially considering the recent emergence of pathogens with novel transmission characteristics. In this review, we summarize existing knowledge and understanding on respiratory infectious diseases and their protection, discuss the emerging issues that influence the resulting protective and comfort performance of the RPDs, and provide insights in the identified knowledge gaps and future directions with diverse perspectives.

Biopolymer-Based Membrane Adsorber for Removing Contaminants from Aqueous Solution: Progress and Prospects

The demand for energy-efficient water treatment as well as the limitation in adsorption of existing membranes has motivated the pursuit of membranes that can break the selectivity-permeability trade-off and provide high selective adsorption for chemicals of interest. The membrane adsorbers have received a lot of attention for removing contaminants from aqueous solution due to combine both advantages of adsorption and membrane separation. Membrane adsorbers constructed by biopolymer with many functional groups are widely used in water purification, because the biopolymers are easily available from biomass materials in nature, degradable, and low-cost. This paper summarizes the characteristics and important development direction of these types of biomass-based membrane adsorption materials to adsorb organic/inorganic contaminants of water and analyzes the preparation methods of natural biomacromolecule cellulose, chitosan, sodium alginate, and protein to construct the membrane adsorption materials, as well as the application of pollutant removal from aqueous solutions. According to the current problems and shortcomings in the research of biopolymer-based membrane adsorbers, it is proposed to improve the understanding of the adsorption mechanism of biopolymer-based membrane adsorbers and accelerate the development of practical applications as the focus of future research.

Removal of Sb(III) by 3D-reduced graphene oxide/sodium alginate double-network composites from an aqueous batch and fixed-bed system

We created 3D-reduced graphene oxide/sodium alginate double network (GAD) beads to address the problem of local water pollution by antimony. GAD is a novel material with the high specific surface area of graphene and biosecurity of sodium alginate. Due to the introduction of graphene, the thermal stability and specific surface area of GAD are enhanced, as shown from the FTIR, TGA, BET, Raman, and XRD characterizations. The influence of different environmental variables-such as the pH, dosage, temperature, contact time, and sodium chloride concentration on the Sb(III) sorption with GAD-was investigated. The adsorption results fit well with both the pseudo-second order (R² > 0.99) and Freundlich (R² > 0.99) isotherm models. The temperature rise has a negative influence on the adsorption. The Langmuir adsorption capacity is 7.67 mg/g, which is higher than many adsorbents. The GAD results from the fixed-bed adsorption experiment were a good fit with the Thomas model (R² > 0.99). In addition, GAD appears to be a renewable and ideal adsorbent for the treatment of antimony pollution in aqueous systems.

De Novo Ion-Exchange Membranes Based on Nanofibers

The unique functions of nanofibers (NFs) are based on their nanoscale cross-section, high specific surface area, and high molecular orientation, and/or their confined polymer chains inside the fibers. The introduction of ion-exchange (IEX) groups on the surface and/or inside the NFs provides de novo ion-exchangers. In particular, the combination of large surface areas and ionizable groups in the IEX-NFs improves their performance through indices such as extremely rapid ion-exchange kinetics and high ion-exchange capacities. In reality, the membranes based on ion-exchange NFs exhibit superior properties such as high catalytic efficiency, high ion-exchange and adsorption capacities, and high ionic conductivities. The present review highlights the fundamental aspects of IEX-NFs (i.e., their unique size-dependent properties), scalable production methods, and the recent advancements in their applications in catalysis, separation/adsorption processes, and fuel cells, as well as the future perspectives and endeavors of NF-based IEMs.

Immobilization of chitosan-templated MnO2 nanoparticles onto filter paper by redox method as a retrievable Fenton-like dip catalyst

By exploiting the hydrophilicity of cellulose filter paper (FP) and the excellent chelating property of chitosan (CH) for Mn²⁺, we have designed an efficient and retrievable dip catalyst MnO₂/CH-FP for Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue (MB) over a wide pH range from 2.8 to 11.2. The MnO₂ nanoparticles were uniformly immobilized in the CH-FP matrix by in-situ redox precipitation method where Mn(NO₃)₂ was treated with KMnO₄ at mild conditions. A series of MnO₂/CH-FP hybrids with different MnO₂ loading were fabricated via varying concentration of Mn(NO₃)₂ solution, and their structure-function relationships were discussed based on detailed characterization. The optimal catalyst 1.0MnO₂/CH-FP could cooperate with multiple low-concentration dosages of H₂O₂ to efficiently degrade 95.6% MB in 90 min (50 mg L^-1 MB, 1 g L^-1 catalyst, 30 mg L^-1 H₂O₂, pH 7). It is also shown that 1.0MnO₂/CH-FP could still keep 83.3% degradation efficiency of MB after six cycles. Moreover, the activity of this composite greatly surpassed that of bare MnO₂ for nearly 50%, owing to its larger surface area and more accessible active sites. This method for preparing MnO₂/CH-FP could effectively avoid the agglomeration of MnO₂ nanoparticles and make the reaction turn on/off almost instantaneously by mere insertion/removal.

Sodium alginate blended membrane with polyurethane: Desalination performance and antimicrobial activity evaluation

A series of polymeric membranes were synthesized by blending polyurethane with sodium alginate (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0%). The structural, morphological and thermal properties of the membranes were examined by FTIR, SEM, AFM and TGA, respectively. Performance evaluation (salt rejection and flux) was assessed through reverse osmosis technique (RO). The FTIR spectra of membranes confirmed extensive hydrogen bonding (3350 cm^-1). The SEM and AFM analyses supported a progressively rising surface roughness of blended membranes. The hydrophilicity, crosslinking density and thermal stability of the membranes were improved with an increase in alginate content. The capability of salt (NaCl and MgCl₂) rejection was improved with alginate up to 0.8%. In addition, the rejection of divalent ions was better than monovalent ions (94 ± 0.96% for NaCl and 98 ± 0.98% for MgCl₂). The blended membranes ascertained an effective chlorine resistivity. The antibacterial activity was also promising, which enhanced with the alginate content in the membrane. The sodium alginate blended membrane with polyurethane proved to be an efficient approach to develop the blended membranes with tunable properties for water desalination.

Fabrication of nanostructured multi-unit vehicle for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of peptide

An oral multi-unit delivery system was developed by incorporating the nanoparticle (NP) into the nanofiber mat and its efficiency for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of a peptide (insulin) was investigated. Initially, the influence of deacetylation degree (DD) of chitosan and ionic gelation methods on the properties of NPs was studied. High DD (95%) chitosan was attributed to higher encapsulation efficiency and stability when crosslinked with polyanion tripolyphosphate. Subsequently, the multi-unit system was fabricated using a pH-sensitive polymer (sodium alginate) as the coating layer to further encapsulate the NP. Fiber mat with an average diameter of 481 ± 47 nm could significantly decrease the burst release of insulin in acidic condition and release most amount of insulin (>60%) in the simulated intestinal medium. Furthermore, the encapsulated peptide remained in good integrity. This multi-unit carrier provides the better-designed vehicle for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of the peptide.

A review of recent progress in polymeric electrospun nanofiber membranes in addressing safe water global issues

With rapid advancement in water filtration materials, several efforts have been made to fabricate electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs). ENMs play a crucial role in different areas of water treatment due to their several advantageous properties such as high specific surface area, high interconnected porosity, controllable thickness, mechanical robustness, and wettability. In the broad field of water purification, ENMs have shown tremendous potential in terms of permeability, rejection, energy efficiency, resistance to fouling, reusability and mechanical robustness as compared to the traditional phase inversion membranes. Upon various chemical and physical modifications of ENMs, they have exhibited great potential for emerging applications in environment, energy and health sectors. This review firstly presents an overview of the limiting factors influencing the morphology of electrospun nanofibers. Secondly, it presents recent advancements in electrospinning processes, which helps to not only overcome drawbacks associated with the conventional electrospinning but also to produce nanofibers of different morphology and orientation with an increased rate of production. Thirdly, it presents a brief discussion about the recent progress of the ENMs for removal of various pollutants from aqueous system through major areas of membrane separation. Finally, this review concludes with the challenges and future directions in this vast and fast growing area.

Preparation of fibrous chitosan/sodium alginate composite foams for the adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes

Natural polysaccharide is attractive for preparing the environmentally friendly and highly efficient adsorbent. However, to obtain an efficient amphoteric absorbent for dealing with complex wastewater is still challenging. Herein, fibrous chitosan/sodium alginate composite foams were prepared by lyophilization with ternary acetic acid/water/tetrahydrofuran solvents, which had suitable morphology of interconnected pores and microscale fibers for dye adsorption. The amphoteric composite foams showed high adsorption capacities for both anionic Acid Black-172 (817.0 mg/g) and cationic Methylene Blue (1488.1 mg/g), which were far superior to those of the control samples prepared with traditional solvents of acetic acid/water. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data showed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model. Further thermodynamics analysis revealed the adsorption was a spontaneous process. Meanwhile, the foams achieved effective adsorption capacity of AB-172 and MB dyes under a wide range of environmental pH, and maintained high adsorption efficiency even after four cycles. The adsorption mechanism is chemisorption, where the adsorption capacities for the anionic and cationic dyes were dependent on the mass ratio of chitosan to sodium alginate. As a novel amphoteric adsorbent, the fibrous chitosan/sodium alginate composite foam shows the potential to remove both cationic and anionic dyes from wastewaters.
