Synthesis of a novel CoFe2O4/chitosan magnetic composite for fast adsorption of indigotine blue dye

Bioinspired amino acid-functionalized cobalt ferrite nanocomposite: A nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor for sensitive and selective quantification of phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid antioxidant capacity

The escalating oxidative stress has heightened the daily human demand for diverse antioxidants. Therefore, development of the novel approaches to assess the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of various nutrients is essential. In this study, drawing inspiration from the active site of native peroxidase enzymes, a novel peroxidase (POD)-like nanozyme was developed based on the cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles functionalized with different catalytic amino acids. Based on the TMB/H2O2 colorimetric system, the most substantial enhancement in POD-like activity was obtained by the glutamic acid coating among different charged amino acids studied, with more than 74% increase in specific activity compared to the bare CoFe2O4. A signal-off colorimetric sensing platform based on the obtained nanobiocatalyst was developed for the accurate quantification of the antioxidant capacity of phenolic compounds and vitamin C. The sensitive and selective quantification of ascorbic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, and quercetin was obtained by this colorimetric method.

Rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using a magnetic-assisted electrochemical biosensor based on functionalized CoFe2O4 magnetic nanomaterials

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) in 2019 has garnered widespread attention. The virus exhibits high contagiousness, and in certain cases, it can lead to recurrent infections. Therefore, it is imperative to develop portable, sensitive, and accurate sensors to promptly detect infected individuals, control the virus's transmission, and determine suitable treatment strategies. In this study, we proposed a magnetically-assisted method employing CFO@CS-Au MNP as the substrate material, which was functionalized with human angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE2) for efficient capture of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in solution. Subsequently, the captured protein was sensitively detected through differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) electrical analysis. The linear detection range of the labeled GCE/MNP/GA/ACE2/BSA electrochemical sensor is from 1 pg/mL to 10 μg/mL, with a minimum detection limit of 0.15 pg/mL. Furthermore, the fabricated GCE/MNP/GA/ACE2/BSA sensor achieved satisfactory recoveries of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in saliva and nasal swab samples within 10 min. These results indicate that this magnetically-assisted biosensor has established a solid foundation for the swift on-site detection of COVID-19.

Fabrication of MoS2 restrained magnetic chitosan polysaccharide composite for the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes

Chitosan (CS) polysaccharide is expected to exhibit greater ionic conductivity, which can be attributed to its increased amino group content when it is blended with different semiconducting materials. Herein, the work used this conducting ability of chitosan and prepared a heterogeneous MoS2-induced magnetic chitosan (MF@CS) composite via the co-precipitation method, which was used to scrutinize the catalytic performance with Methylene Blue (MB) and Malachite Green (MG) dyes by visible light irradiation. The saturation magnetization value of the MF@CS composite is found to be 7.8 emu/g, which is less when compared to that of pristine Fe3O4 (55.7 emu/g) particles. The bandgap of the MF@CS composite is ∼ 2.17eV, which exceeds the bandgap (Eg) of bare MoS2 of 1.80 eV. The maximum color removal of 96.3 % and 93.4 % for MB and MG dyestuffs is recognized in the exposure of the visible spectrum, respectively. At a starting dye dosage of 30 mg/L, 0.1 g/L of MF@CS, a pH level of 8-11, and 70 min of contact with direct light. The photocatalyst provides extremely good durability for a maximum of five phases. Hence, the MF@CS matrix is a viable and appropriate substance for the efficient treatment of effluents containing dye molecules.

Enhanced fluoride removal using montmorillonite clay modified with CoFe2O4 and metal-organic frameworks

The use of modified clays can play an effective role as an effective adsorbent in removing fluoride (Flu) ions from water and aqueous solutions. In the present research, montmorillonite clay (MMt) was modified using CoFe2O4 magnetic particles and Al-Fe fumarate metal-organic framework (Al-Fe Fum) and was utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removing Flu from aqueous solution. The properties of MMt and MMt/CoFe2O4/Al-Fe Fum samples were investigated using different techniques. The results showed that with the modification of MMt using CoFe2O4 magnetic particles and the metal-organic framework of Al-Fe Fum, the BET surface has increased notably from 13.217 to 365.80 m2/g. To investigate the effect of independent variables and their interaction on the efficiency of the Flu adsorption, response surface method-central compound design (RSM-CCD) was served. Based on the results of ANOVA, the F-value and p-value parameters for the desired model were determined to be 783.09 and < 0.0001, respectively, which confirms the success and high ability of the model. The number of R2, adjusted R2, and Predicted R2 for adsorption of Flu ion was determined to be 0.998, 0.997, and 0.995, respectively, which shows that the proposed regression model can describe the process of adsorption and interaction between variables well. Compared to other kinetic models, the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model has a greater ability to describe the Flu adsorption behavior. The R2 parameter value determined that the Freundlich isotherm model has a suitable ability to investigate the isotherm behavior and confirms the effect of heterogeneous surfaces in the process. Generally, the outcomes signified that the MMt and MMt/CoFe2O4/Al-Fe Fum samples can be reused several times in the process of Flu adsorption, while the efficiency is more than 90%.

Adsorption of perfluorooctanoic carboxylic and heptadecafluorooctane sulfonic acids via magnetic chitosan: isotherms and modeling

This paper evaluates the adsorption mechanism of perfluorooctanoic carboxylic acid (PFCA) and heptadecafluorooctane sulfonic acid (HFOSA) on magnetic chitosan for the first time via a statistical physics modeling. Magnetic chitosan (MC-CoFe2O4) was produced from shrimp wastes and used in standard batch adsorption systems to remove PFCA and HFOSA. The experimental isotherms indicated that the maximum adsorption capacities ranged from 14 to 27.12 mg/g and from 19.16 to 45.12 mg/g for PFCA and HFOSA, respectively, where an exothermic behavior was observed for both compounds. The adsorption data were studied via an advanced model hypothesizing that a multilayer process occurred for these adsorption systems. This theoretical approach indicated that the total number of formed layers of PFCA and HFOSA adsorbates is about 3 (Nt = 2.83) at high temperatures (328 K) where a molecular aggregation process was noted during the adsorption. The maximum saturation-multilayer adsorption of PFCA and HFOSA on magnetic chitosan was 30.77 and 50.26 mg/g, respectively, and the corresponding adsorption mechanisms were successfully investigated. Two energies were responsible for the formed adsorbate layer directly on the surface and the vertical layers were computed and interpreted, reflecting that physical interactions were involved to bind these molecules on the adsorbent surface at different temperatures where the calculated adsorption energies ranged from 14 to 31 kJ/mol. Overall, this work provides theoretical insights to understand the adsorption mechanism of PFCA and HFOSA using the statistical physics modeling and its results can be used to improve the adsorbent performance for engineering applications.

Enhanced UV-light driven photocatalytic performance of magnetic CoFe2O4/TiO2 nanohybrid for environmental applications

In this work, CoFe₂O₄/TiO₂ nanostructure was prepared through a facile and effective solvothermal route for efficient use in the degradation of the Erionyl Red A-3G model pollutant under ultraviolet irradiation. Characterization analysis indicated the successful heterojunction among the precursors. The composite presented band gap value of 2.75 eV, being smaller than that of the pristine TiO₂, as well as mesoporous structure. The catalytic activity of nanostructure was investigated by employing a 2² factorial experimental design with 3 central points. The optimized reaction conditions were set as pH = 2 and catalyst dosage = 1.0 g L^-1 for an initial pollutant concentration of 20 mg L^-1. The prepared nanohybrid presented remarkable catalytic activity, reaching color removal efficiency of 95.39% after 15 min, as well as total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 69.4% after 120 min. The kinetic studies of TOC removal followed the pseudo-first order model, with a rate constant of 0.10 min^-1. Moreover, the nanostructure presented magnetic behavior, being easily separated from the aqueous medium through the use of a simple external magnetic field.

The use of chitosan-based composites for environmental remediation: A review

The presence of hazardous pollutants in water sources as a result of industrial activities is a major environmental challenge that impedes the availability of safe drinking water. Adsorptive and photocatalytic degradative removal of various pollutants in wastewater have been recognized as cost-effective and energy-efficient strategies. In addition to its biological activity, chitosan and its derivatives are considered as promising materials for the removal of various pollutants. The abundance of hydroxyl and amino groups in the chitosan macromolecular structure results in a variety of concurrent pollutant's adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, adding chitosan to photocatalysts increases the mass transfer while decreasing both the band gap energy and the amount of intermediates produced during photocatalytic processes, improving the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we have reviewed the current design and preparation of chitosan and its composites, as well as their applications for the removal of various pollutants by adsorption and photocatalysis processes. Effects of operating variables such as the pH, catalyst mass, contact time, light wavelength, initial pollutant's concentration, and catalyst recyclability, are discussed. Various kinetic and isotherm models are presented to elucidate the rates, and mechanisms of pollutant's removal, onto chitosan-based composites, and several case studies are presented. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of chitosan-based composites has been discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the applications of chitosan-based composites in wastewater treatment and put forward new insights for the development of highly effective chitosan-based adsorbents and photocatalysts. Finally, the main challenges and future directions in the field are discussed.

A review on remediation of dye adulterated system by ecologically innocuous "biopolymers/natural gums-based composites"

The mitigation of wastewater exploiting biopolymers/natural gums-based composites is an appealing research theme in today's scenario. The following review presents a comprehensive description of the polysaccharides derived from biopolymers (chitosan, collagen, cellulose, starch, pectin, lignin, and alginate) and natural gums (guar, gellan, carrageenan, karaya, moringa oliefera, tragacanth, and xanthan gum). These biopolymers/natural gums-based composites depicted excellent surface functionality, non-toxicity, economic and environmental viability, which corroborated them as potential candidates in the decontamination process. The presence of -OH, -COOH, and -NH functional groups in their backbone rendered them tailorable for modification/functionalization, and anchor an array of pollutants via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and Van der Waals forces. Further, due to these functional moieties, these bio-based composites revealed an excellent adsorption capacity than conventional adsorbents. This review provides an overview of the classification of biopolymers/natural gums based on their origin, different ways of their modification, and the remediation of dye-contaminated aqueous environments employing diverse bio-based adsorbents. The isotherm, kinetic modelling along with thermodynamics of the adsorption process is discussed. Additionally, the reusable efficacy of these bio-adsorbents is reviewed.

Hierarchal polyaniline-folic acid nanostructures act as a platform for electrochemical detection of tumor cells

The fabrication of electrochemical sensing platforms for cancer monitoring by quantifying circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in blood holds promise for providing a low-cost, rapid, feasible, and safe approach for cancer diagnosis. Here, we isolate cancer cells using CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles functionalized with folic acid and chitosan as an inexpensive magnetic nanoprobe. This electrochemical cytosensing platform was realized using polyaniline-folic acid nanohybrids with a three-dimensional hierarchical structure that presents abundant affinity sites toward overexpressed folate bioreceptors on cancer cells, in addition to retaining satisfied conductivity. Furthermore, 3D modeling and simulation of the polyaniline-folic acid structures were conducted to investigate the stable complex between aniline and folate, and the interaction between the polyaniline-folate complex and folate receptor alpha1, a bioreceptor on MCF-7 was revealed for the first time. The limit of detection was calculated to be 4 cells mL^-1 with a linear range from 50 to 10⁶ cells mL^-1.

MXene-based cytosensor for the detection of HER2-positive cancer cells using CoFe2O4@Ag magnetic nanohybrids conjugated to the HB5 aptamer

MXenes are a new class of conductive two-dimensional material which have received growing attention in biosensing for their significant surface area and unique surface chemistry. Here, gold electrodes were modified with MXene nanosheets of about 2 nm thickness and 1.5 μm lateral size for the electrochemical detection of tumor cells. An HB5 aptamer with high selectivity for HER-2 positive cells was immobilized on the MXene layers via electrostatic interactions. To minimize electrode biofouling with blood matrix, magnetic separation of HER-2 positive circulating tumor cells was carried out using CoFe₂O₄@Ag magnetic nanohybrids bonded to the HB5. The formation of sandwich-like structures between the magnetically captured cells and the functionalized MXene electrodes effectively shields the electron transfer of a redox probe, enabling quantitative cell detection using the change in current. This label-free MXene-based cytosensor platform yielded a wide linear range of 10²-10⁶ cells/mL, low detection limit of 47 cells/mL, and good sensitivity and selectivity in the detection of HER2-posetive cells in blood samples. The presented aptacytosensor demonstrates the great potential of using CoFe₂O₄@Ag magnetic nanohybrids and MXenes to monitor cancer progression via circulating tumor cells in blood at low cost.

Fast and Efficient Removal of Uranium onto a Magnetic Hydroxyapatite Composite: Mechanism and Process Evaluation

The exploration and rational design of easily separable and highly efficient sorbents with satisfactory capability of extracting radioactive uranium (U)-containing compound(s) are of paramount significance. In this study, a novel magnetic hydroxyapatite (HAP) composite (HAP@ CoFe2O4), which was coupled with cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), was rationally designed for uranium(VI) removal through a facile hydrothermal process. The U(VI) ions were rapidly removed using HAP@ CoFe2O4 within a short time (i.e., 10 min), and a maximum U(VI) removal efficiency of 93.7% was achieved. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of the HAP@CoFe2O4 was 338 mg/g, which demonstrated the potential of as-prepared HAP@CoFe2O4 in the purification of U(VI) ions from nuclear effluents. Autunite [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2(H2O)6] was the main crystalline phase to retain uranium, wherein U(VI) was effectively extracted and immobilized in terms of a relatively stable mineral. Furthermore, the reacted HAP@CoFe2O4 can be magnetically recycled. The results of this study reveal that the suggested process using HAP@CoFe2O4 is a promising approach for the removal and immobilization of U(VI) released from nuclear effluents.

Chitosan immobilization and Fe3O4 functionalization of olive pomace: An eco-friendly and recyclable Pb2+ biosorbent

An effective and sustainable biosorbent (MagOPIC) was prepared from chitosan and olive pomace by the combined action of immobilization and magnetic modification to remediate Pb²⁺-contaminated waters. Pb²⁺ sorption yield at the end of the equilibrium (45 min) period was estimated to be 98.56 ± 0.28% at pH 5.5. Agitation speed, ionic strength, and temperature did not significantly affect the Pb²⁺ biosorption. Biosorption kinetics are successfully fitted by the pseudo-second-order equation while the equilibrium biosorption data are properly modeled using the Freundlich and D-R isotherms. MagOPIC has also exhibited a high biosorption yield in the column tests (≥99%) and showed remarkable stability up to twenty consecutive regeneration cycles. Furthermore, it was successfully used for the treatment of Pb²⁺ containing real wastewater. The findings of this work highlighted the potential use of MagOPIC as a novel, cost-effective and eco-friendly biosorbent for the Pb²⁺ removal from the contaminated aquatic phase.

Development of highly efficient and reusable magnetic nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for chlorophenol removal

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method and further modified with magnetic Co_0.5Cu_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles following a one-pot solvothermal method. The characterization data show that the distribution of the magnetic materials and the adsorption characteristics of the CNTs can be tailored as a function of the N doping amount. The N-CNT adsorption isotherms as a function of N content and chlorophenol uptake show that a N doping level of 6% is optimum. After loading the N-CNTs with the magnetic Co_0.5Cu_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles (M-N-CNTs), the resulting materials were easily dispersed in aqueous media with specific surface area reaching 95.64 m²/g. The M-N-CNTs exhibit high affinities toward the adsorption of different chlorophenols following the order: Pentachlorophenol (PCP) > 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) > 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) > 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) > phenol. Additionally, the M-N-CNTs exhibit good microwave absorption performance and can be regenerated by microwave irradiation with high efficiencies (> 90%) maintained with high stabilities.

Single-step pyrolysis for producing magnetic activated carbon from tucumã (Astrocaryum aculeatum) seed and nickel(II) chloride and zinc(II) chloride. Application for removal of nicotinamide and propanolol

The present research describes the synthesis of new nanomagnetic activated carbon material with high magnetization, and high surface area prepared in a single pyrolysis step that is used for the carbonization, activation, and magnetization of the produced material. The pyrolysis step of tucumã seed was carried out in a conventional tubular oven at 600 °C under N₂-flow. It was prepared three magnetic carbons MT-1.5, MT-2.0, MT-2.5, that corresponds to the proportion of biomass: ZnCl₂ always 1:1 and varying the proportion of NiCl₂ of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5, respectively. These magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, CHN/O elemental analysis, modified Boehm titration, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms; and pH_pzc. All the materials obtained presented Ni particles with an average crystallite size of less than 33 nm. The MT-2.0 was employed for the removal of nicotinamide and propranolol from aqueous solutions. Based on Liu isotherm, the Q_max was 199.3 and 335.4 mg g^-1 for nicotinamide and propranolol, respectively. MT-2.0 was used to treat simulated pharmaceutical industry effluents attaining removal of all organic compounds attaining up to 99.1 % of removal.

Solvent-free synthesis of magnetic biochar and activated carbon through ball-mill extrusion with Fe3O4 nanoparticles for enhancing adsorption of methylene blue

Magnetic carbonaceous adsorbents were synthesized by ball-milling biochar (BC) or activated carbon (AC) with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, and their capacities to sorb methylene blue (MB) from water were evaluated and compared. Ball milling with magnetite not only improved the surface properties of the carbonaceous adsorbents, especially BC, but also introduced magnetic properties through mechanical extrusion. Furthermore, ball-mill extrusion increased the MB adsorption capacity of BC at all pH values by 14-fold, on average, but BC ball milled with magnetite had even greater MB adsorption capacity (27-fold, greater, on average). While ball milling of AC also improved its MB adsorption capacity (by almost 3-fold, on average), ball milling with magnetite did not further improve its MB adsorption capacity. All the magnetic adsorbents showed fast MB adsorption kinetics, reaching equilibrium within about 8 h. The Langmuir maximum MB adsorption capacity of the magnetic ball-milled BC (MBM-BC) was the highest (500.5 mg/g) among all the samples including the ones derived from AC. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, MBM-BC maintained about 80% MB removal capacity. The high MB adsorption capacity of MBM-BC was attributed to its increased surface area, opened pore structure, functional groups and aromatic CC bonds, which promoted π-π and electrostatic interactions. Findings from this study indicate that the magnetic ball-milled BC is a promising adsorbent due to its environmentally friendly synthesis, high efficiency, low cost, and convenience in operation.

In Situ Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO/Chitosan Nanocomposite as an Adsorbent for Removal of Congo Red from Aqueous Solution

ZnO/chitosan nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by in-situ precipitation method. The material was characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, BET, and TGA. Results show that ZnO/chitosan nanocomposite has spherical shape with the average size of 20–25 nm. BET surface area and the average pore size of ZnO/chitosan nanocomposite are 2.2436 (m2/g) and 12.2 nm, respectively. The material was applied as an adsorbent for congo red removal from aqueous solutions. The congo red adsorption is better described by the Langmuir model (R2=0.996) than by the Freundlich model (R2=0.962). Therefore, it can be presumed that congo red was adsorbed in a single monolayer with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 227.3 (mg/g). This is comparable to other available adsorbents. It can be suggested that ZnO/chitosan nanocomposite could serve as promising adsorbent for congo red in wastewater treatment technology.

Spinel ferrite (AFe2O4)-based heterostructured designs for lithium-ion battery, environmental monitoring, and biomedical applications

The development of spinel ferrite nanomaterial (SFN)-based hybrid architectures has become more popular owing to the fascinating physicochemical properties of SFNs, such as their good electro-optical and catalytic properties, high chemothermal stability, ease of functionalization, and superparamagnetic behaviour. Furthermore, achieving the perfect combination of SFNs and different nanomaterials has promised to open up many unique synergistic effects and advantages. Inspired by the above-mentioned noteworthy properties, numerous and varied applications have been recently developed, such as energy storage in lithium-ion batteries, environmental pollutant monitoring, and, especially, biomedical applications. In this review, recent development efforts relating to SFN-based hybrid designs are described in detail and logically, classified according to 4 major hybrid structures: SFNs/carbonaceous nanomaterials; SFNs/metal–metal oxides; SFNs/MS₂; and SFNs/other materials. The underlying advantages of the additional interactions and combinations of effects, compared to the standalone components, and the potential uses have been analyzed and assessed for each hybrid structure in relation to lithium-ion battery, environmental, and biomedical applications.

We have summarized recent developments in SFN-based hybrid designs. The additional interactions, combination effects, and important changes have been analyzed and assessed for LIB, environmental monitoring, and biomedical applications.

Upon designing carboxyl methylcellulose and chitosan-derived nanostructured sorbents for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) from water

Considering that the hazardous heavy metal ions like Cd(II) and Cr(VI) are widely present in the environment, nowadays employing easy-to-handle adsorption-oriented processes are feasible choices towards efficient remediation of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous systems. Herein we developed a novel amino-functionalized bead with cost-effectiveness, high sorption capacity and fast sorption kinetics to remove Cd(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The carboxyl methylcellulose and chitosan-derived nanostructured sorbents synthesis were mainly through chitosan and dopamine self-polymerization, doped in sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The pH value, initial concentration and contact time were investigated. Experimental data were commendably described by Freundlich isotherm and Pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) obtained from the experimental data were 470.0 mg/g and 347.0 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbents were collaboratively characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, XPS, etc., and the adsorbent basically exhibited high complexation ability to Cd(II) and showed strong electrostatic effect with Cr(VI) under acidic conditions. The recycling characteristics suggested that it possesses an outstanding recyclability. The adsorbent may have a potential as high-value biological adsorbent to remove heavy metals and it deserves further research into the practical application.

Synthesis of chitosan-ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether/TiO2 nanoparticles for adsorption of reactive orange 16 dye using a response surface methodology approach

Chitosan-ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether/TiO₂ nanoparticles (CS-EGDE/TNP) composite was synthesized to be biosorbent for the removal of reactive orange 16 (RO16) dye from aqueous solution. The CS-EGDE/TNP composite was characterized via BET, XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDX techniques. Response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the adsorption key parameters such as adsorbent dose (A: 0.02-0.08 g/L), RO16 dye concentration (B: 20-80 mg/L), solution pH (C: 4-10), temperature (D: 30-50 °C), and contact time (E: 30-90 min). The adsorption isotherm followed Freundlich model and pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of CS-EGDE/TNP for RO16 dye was 1407.4 mg/g at 40 °C. The adsorption mechanism of RO16 dye on the surface of CS-EGDE/TNP can be attributed to various interactions such as electrostatic attraction, n-π interaction, Yoshida H-bonding, and H-bonding. Results supported the potential use of CS-EGDE/TNP as effective adsorbent for the treatment of acid reactive dye.
