In situ synthesis of ZnS nanoparticles onto cellulose/chitosan sponge for adsorption–photocatalytic removal of Congo red

Environmentally Benign Freeze-dried Biopolymer-Based Cryogels for Textile Wastewater Treatments: A review

Motivated by sustainability and environmental protection, great efforts have been paid towards water purification and attaining complete decolorization and detoxification of polluted water effluent. Textile effluent, the main participant in water pollution, is a complicated mixture of toxic pollutants which seriously impact human health and the entire ecosystem. Developing effective materials for potential removal of the water contaminants is urgent. Recently, cryogels have been applied in wastewater sectors due to their unique physiochemical attributes(e.g. high surface area, lightweight, porosity, swelling-deswelling, and high permeability). These features robustly affected the cryogel's performance, as adsorbent material, particularly in wastewater sectors. This review serves as a detailed reference to the cryogels derived from biopolymers and applied as adsorbents for the purification of textile drainage. We displayed an overview of: the existing contaminants in textile effluents (dyes and heavy metals), their sources, and toxicity; advantages and disadvantages of the most common treatment techniques (biodegradation, advanced chemical oxidation, membrane filtration, coagulation/flocculation, adsorption). A simple background about cryogels (definition, cryogelation technique, significant features as adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanisms) is also discussed. Finally, the bio-based cryogels dependent on biopolymers such as chitosan, xanthan, cellulose, PVA, and PVP, are fully discussed with evaluating their maximum adsorption capacity.

Sustainable chitosan-based materials as heterogeneous catalyst for application in wastewater treatment and water purification: An up-to-date review

Water pollution is one of serious environmental issues due to the rapid development of industrial and agricultural sectors, and clean water resources have been receiving increasing attention. Recently, more and more studies have witnessed significant development of catalysts (metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, zero-valent metal, etc.) for wastewater treatment and water purification. Sustainable and clean catalysts immobilized into chitosan-based materials (Cat@CSbMs) are considered one of the most appealing subclasses of functional materials due to their high catalytic activity, high adsorption capacities, non-toxicity and relative stability. This review provides a summary of various upgrading renewable Cat@CSbMs (such as cocatalyst, photocatalyst, and Fenton-like reagent, etc.). As for engineering applications, further researches of Cat@CSbMs should focus on treating complex wastewater containing both heavy metals and organic pollutants, as well as developing continuous flow treatment methods for industrial wastewater using Cat@CSbMs. In conclusion, this review abridges the gap between different approaches for upgrading renewable and clean Cat@CSbMs and their future applications. This will contribute to the development of cleaner and sustainable Cat@CSbMs for wastewater treatment and water purification.

MXene/ZnS/chitosan-cellulose composite with Schottky heterostructure for efficient removal of anionic dyes by synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation

Nowadays, dye water pollution is becoming increasingly severe. Composite of MXene, ZnS, and chitosan-cellulose material (MX/ZnS/CC) was developed to remove anionic dyes through the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. MXene was introduced as the cocatalyst to form Schottky heterostructure with ZnS for improving the separation efficiency of photocarriers and photocatalytic performance. Chitosan-cellulose material mainly served as the dye adsorbent, while also could improve material stability and assist in generation of free radicals for dye degradation. The physics and chemistry properties of MX/ZnS/CC composite were systematically inspected through various characterizations. MX/ZnS/CC composite exhibited good adsorption ability to anionic dyes with adsorption capacity up to 1.29 g/g, and excellent synergistic effects of adsorption and photodegradation with synergistic removal capacity up to 5.63 g/g. MX/ZnS/CC composite performed higher synergistic removal ability and better optical and electrical properties than pure MXene, ZnS, chitosan-cellulose material, and MXene/ZnS. After compounding, the synergistic removal percentage of dyes increased by a maximum of 309 %. MX/ZnS/CC composite mainly adsorbs anionic dyes through electrostatic interactions and catalyzes the generation of •O2-, h+, and •OH to degrade dyes, which has been successfully used to remove anionic dyes from environmental water, achieving a 100 % removal of 50 mg/L dye.

Preparation of Heterogeneous Fenton Catalysts Cu-Doped MnO2 for Enhanced Degradation of Dyes in Wastewater

Herein, a series of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, Cu doped MnO2 (CDM), with different Cu/Mn molar ratios were prepared via a hydrothermal reaction. Meanwhile, detailed characterizations were used to study the structures of CDM, and it is amazing that the morphology of CDM changed from nanowires to nanoflowers with an increasing amount of Cu doped. Apart from this, both the specific surface area and oxygen vacancy increased obviously with the increasing Cu/Mn molar ratio. Then, the degradation of different dyes was utilized to evaluate the catalytic activity of different CDM with H2O2 used as the oxidizing agent, and the 50%-CDM with the highest content of Cu doped displayed the best catalytic activity. Herein, the degradation efficiency (D%) of Congo red (CR) solution with low concentration (60 mg/L) reached 100% in 3 min, while the D% of CR solution with a high concentration (300 mg/L) reached 99.4% after 5 min with a higher dosage of H2O2. Additionally, the 50%-CDM also displayed excellent reusability, for which the D% values were still higher than 90% after the 14th cycles. Based on the structure characteristics and mechanism analysis, the excellent catalytic capacity of 50%-CDM was due to the combined influence of large specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancy. Thus, a promising heterogeneous Fenton catalyst was developed in this study, which proved the treatment efficiency of actual dye wastewater.

Insight into the catalytic performances of Fe0@chitosan/cellulose green hybrid structure for enhanced photo-Fenton's oxidation of levofloxacin toxic residuals: Pathway and toxicity

A green hybridized structure of Fe0 painted chitosan/cellulose base (Fe0@CS/CF) has been developed using cellulose extracted from sugarcane bagasse along with reduction agents sourced from Khaya senegalensis leaves. The composite was assessed as an affordable, powerful, and multifunctional catalyst for enhancing the degradation of Levofloxacin (LVX) remnants within water supplies via photo-Fenton's interactions. Using a dosage of 0.5 g/L, the Fe0@CS/CF blend demonstrated noteworthy catalytic qualities, resulting in the complete photo-Fenton's degradation of LVX at a level of 25 mg/L after 40 min. However, the complete diminution of organic carbon (TOC) occurred only after 100 min, suggesting the presence of significant intermediate residues. The identified intermediate chemicals and confirmed hydroxyl radicals as the main oxidizer suggest that the degradation pathway involves carboxylation/decarboxylation, hydroxylation, demethylation, and oxidation of quinolone rings. The toxicity properties of untreated LVX solutions and their subsequent oxidized byproducts were assessed by evaluating their inhibiting impact on Vibrio fischeri over various durations. The samples that experienced partial oxidation at initial testing demonstrated a higher level of toxicity in comparison to the parent LVX. However, the sample that was treated for 100 min demonstrated substantial biological safety and a non-toxic nature. The blend of ingredients has a synergistic impact that enhances the uptake, Fenton's, photocatalytic, and photo-Fenton's characteristics of the hosted Fe0 nanoparticles.

In-situ growth of zinc sulfide on the surface of alginate-based biomass carbon: A new material for removing methylene blue/basic fuchsin and copper ions

This work aims to prepare a composite adsorbent with a fixed shape to improve the performance of carbon materials and to solve the problem of adsorbent in powder form which is difficult to recycle after use. The BC-ZnS composite system was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method based on the preparation of biomass carbon (BC) using alginate (Alg), while the ZnS component was grown in-situ on the surface of BC. The effects of Alg, Zn source, hydrothermal temperature and time on the synthesis of BC-ZnS were explored, the results indicated that ZnS was successfully grown in-situ on the BC surface, while the BC maintained its original morphology. BC-ZnS showed excellent adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB), basic fuchsin (BF), and copper ions (Cu2+), reaching 301.50 mg/g for MB and exhibiting good cyclic stability. The adsorption of MB/BF/Cu2+ by BC-ZnS was characterized by the presence of multiple forces, where the BC component mainly depended on the electrostatic force of Alg residue, while the ZnS involves electrostatic forces, ion exchange and Lewis acid/base soft-soft interactions. The adsorption process conforms to pseudo-first-kinetics and is a spontaneous entropy-increasing process. BC-ZnS can be a candidate for reusable wastewater treatment and has excellent potential for application.

A review on chitosan/metal oxide nanocomposites for applications in environmental remediation

A cleaner and safer environment is one of the most important requirements in the future. It has become increasingly urgent and important to fabricate novel environmentally-friendly materials to remove various hazardous pollutants. Compared with traditional materials, chitosan is a more environmentally friendly material due to its abundance, biocompatibility, biodegradability, film-forming ability and hydrophilicity. As an abundant of -NH2 and -OH groups on chitosan molecular chain could chelate with all kinds of metal ions efficiently, chitosan-based materials hold great potential as a versatile supporting matrix for metal oxide nanomaterials (MONMs) (TiO2, ZnO, SnO2, Fe3O4, etc.). Recently, many chitosan/metal oxide nanomaterials (CS/MONMs) have been reported as adsorbents, photocatalysts, heterogeneous Fenton-like agents, and sensors for potential and practical applications in environmental remediation and monitoring. This review analyzed and summarized the recent advances in CS/MONMs composites, which will provide plentiful and meaningful information on the preparation and application of CS/MONMs composites for wastewater treatment and help researchers to better understand the potential of CS/MONMs composites for environmental remediation and monitoring. In addition, the challenges of CS/MONM have been proposed.

Facile construction of lignin-based network composite hydrogel for efficient adsorption of methylene blue from wastewater

Adsorption method is an effective approach to treat wastewater containing methylene blue. Herein, a cost-effective and eco-friendly lignin-based network composite hydrogel adsorbent (PAA@SML) was constructed by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) to crosslink with sulfomethylated lignin (SML) via free radical polymerization for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The constructed PAA@SML-0.2 exhibited remarkable adsorption performance towards removal of MB, with a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 777.1 mg·g-1. The improved efficiency can be attributed to the well-established network structure and abundant hydrophilic functional groups present in the adsorbent, promoting the interaction between methylene blue (MB) molecules and the adsorption sites of the adsorbent. The adsorption process of the adsorbent for MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, which illustrated the adsorption process attributed to monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism investigation confirmed that the adsorption of MB by PAA@SML-0.2 primarily relied on hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the recyclability test demonstrated excellent regeneration usability and stability of PAA@SML-0.2, and the adsorption capacity maintained above 74.0 % after five cycles. This constructed lignin-based network composite hydrogel is considered to have great potential in the treatment of organic dye in wastewater.

Synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis reduction of uranium by UiO-66 (Ce)-CdS/PEI-modified chitosan composite sponge

Uranium is a critical element of the nuclear industry, and while extracting it from seawater is considered the most promising way to meet the growing demand for uranium, there are still some problems that still need to be solved. This work designed a UiO-66(Ce)-CdS/PEI-modified chitosan composite sponge (USPS) with an adsorption-photocatalytic synergistic effect to extract uranium efficiently. On the one hand, the drawback that the powder material is difficult to be recycled is solved. On the other hand, the uranium extraction capacity of the substrate sponge is improved. Compared with the unmodified PCS sponge, the uranium extraction capacity of the USPS-4 composite sponge is 1.63 fold higher than that of the PCS sponge. In addition, the USPS-4 composite sponge exhibits excellent selectivity and regenerability. The mechanism of uranium extraction can be summarized as the coordination chelation of uranium with active functional groups in the adsorption process and the reduction of hexavalent uranium by photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic process. This study provides a new strategy for designing and preparing a novel material with high uranium extraction performance, easy separation, and recovery.

Molybdenum disulfide nanoflowers - doped sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol porous xerogel for methylene blue and copper ion adsorption

In order to improve the adsorption performance of MoS2, as well as to solve the problems of MoS2-powder in adsorption, which is prone to agglomeration and difficulty to be recycled, we prepared MoS2-nanoflowers(MoS2-NFs), and mixed them with sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol(SA/PVA) to prepare MoS2-NFs/SA/PVA xerogel(MSP) by freezing-lyophilization. Then two forms of xerogels - block-MSP(MSPB) and spherical-MSP(MSPS) were prepared, and they were used as methylene blue(MB) and Cu2+ adsorbent. It was found that MoS2-NFs were evenly dispersed inside the SA/PVA with no agglomeration, while the interior of MSPB/MSPS showed the structure of parallel-pores and radial-pores, respectively. The adsorption capacity of MSPB/MSPS on MB can reach 233 mg/g, which is five times higher than SA/PVA-gel, showing excellent synergistic-adsorption effect, and the adsorption capacity for Cu2+ reaches 271 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the adsorption of MB by MSPB/MSPS conformed to pseudo-first-order model, with electrostatic force as the main force. And their adsorption of Cu2+ conformed to pseudo-second-order model and was dominated by Lewis acid/base soft-soft interactions. Notably, after long-term adsorption, MSPB/MSPS maintains its shape and more than 90 % of the adsorption capacity, ensuring the recovery and reuse of materials. So, MSPB/MSPS has great potential in adsorption, providing a new solution for sewage purification.

Enhanced adsorption of Congo red from urea/calcium chloride co-modified biochar: Performance, mechanisms and toxicity assessment

Adsorbents with excellent physicochemical properties and green synthetic routes are desired for efficient removal of Congo red (CR) wastewater. Hence, a novel approach was proposed within this work. Biochar NCBC obtained from Medulla Tetrapanacis was synthesized through co-modification with urea/calcium chloride. NCBC exhibited an enormous surface area (750.09 m2/g) and a micro-mesoporous composite structure. Higher nitrogen content was detected on the surface of NCBC (8.17%) compared to that of urea directly modified biochar (4.63%). Nitrogen observed on the surface of NCBC was presented as graphitic N, pyrrolic N, amine N as well as pyridinic N. Kinetic and isothermal investigations revealed the active sites on NCBC to be homogeneous and bind to CR mainly by chemisorption. Calculated maximum sorption of CR on NCBC was 2512.82 mg/g basing on Langmuir model. Moreover, the practicality of NCBC was further proved by the cultivation of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. and Penicillium.

ZnS/CuFe2O4/MXene ternary heterostructure photocatalyst for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes under visible light: Synergistic effect, mechanism, and application

ZnS/CuFe2O4/MXene (ZSCFOM) composite with ternary heterostructures was prepared by solvothermal methods for the first time to effectively adsorb and photodegrade the azo dyes. ZSCFOM mainly adsorbed azo dyes through the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, with saturated adsorption capacities of 377 mg g-1 for direct brown M and 390 mg g-1 for direct black RN. ZSCFOM exhibited both characteristics of Schott heterostructure and p-n heterostructure, but it is not a simple superposition of the two heterostructures, but rather achieves better photocatalytic property. ZSCFOM performed a higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes than pure CuFe2O4 and pure ZnS. Under visible light, ZSCFOM was more effective in removing the azo dyes than MXene, CuFe2O4, ZnS, CuFe2O4/MXene, ZnS/MXene, and ZnS/CuFe2O4. The migration pathways of photogenerated carriers in ZSCFOM were inferred as that the electrons were concentrated in MXene and conduction band of ZnS, and holes were gathered in valence band of CuFe2O4. MXene served as a cocatalyst to accelerate the separation of electrons and holes. ZSCFOM mainly degraded DBM and DBRN by catalyzing the generation of holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals. The 100% of 0.05 g L-1 azo dyes were removed by ZSCFOM within 30 min from the environmental water systems.

NaBiS2 decorated polysaccharide sponges for adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of dye under visible light illumination

Dye is emissions aggravating aquatic ecosystem pollution, and photocatalysis is considered the most appealing option to remove dyes by degradation. However, the current photocatalysts suffer from agglomeration, large bandgaps, high mass transfer resistance, and high operation cost. Herein, we present a facile hydrothermally induced phase separation and in situ synthesis strategy for fabrication of sodium bismuth sulfide (NaBiS₂)-decorated chitosan/cellulose sponges (NaBiCCSs). The NaBiCCSs demonstrate unique polysaccharide cellular structure (150-500 μm), uniformly immobilized NaBiS₂ nanoparticles (70-90 nm), narrow bandgap (1.18 eV), high photocurrent (0.74 μA/cm²), and outstanding compressibility. Benefiting from the characteristics and the high affinity to dyes, the NaBiCCSs provide innovative synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation model for dye removal, attaining a superior methylene blue removal rate of 98.38 % under visible light illumination and offering good reusability. This study offers a sustainable technical solution for dye contaminant removal.

Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solutions by Surface Modified Talc

In this study, raw talc powder surface modification was conducted, and the powder was modified in two different methods using acid washing and ball milling. Modified talc was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to investigate the adsorption capacity of modified talc on dyes, adsorption experiments were carried out with methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions as the target contaminant. The findings of the characterization revealed that both modifications increased the adsorption capacity of talc, which was attributed to changes in specific surface area and active groups. The influence of process parameters such as contact time, pH, dye concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption performance was systematically investigated. Modified talc was able to adsorb MB rapidly, reaching equilibrium within 60 min. Additionally, the adsorption performance was improved as the pH of the dye solution increased. The isotherms for MB adsorption by modified talc fitted well with the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model in the adsorption kinetic model properly described the adsorption behavior. The results show that the modified talc can be used as an inexpensive and abundant candidate material for the adsorption of dyes in industrial wastewater.

A strategy-purifying wastewater with waste materials: Zn2+ modified waste red mud as recoverable adsorbents with an enhanced removal capacity of congo red

The strategy, called purifying wastewater with waste materials (PWWM), can simultaneously improve the secondary utilization of industrial waste materials and in turn, reduce environmental pollution. However, the PWWM strategy has still not been extensively used because of its low purification efficiency of organic pollutants and extremely difficult secondary utilization process. Herein, we use zinc aluminum silicate (ZAS) to modify waste granular red mud (GRM) to form a recoverable adsorbent, called ZAS/GRM adsorbent. The ZAS has been found to exhibit exceptional adsorption performance with the ability to firmly anchor onto the surface of GRM, in which heavy metal ions can effectively solidify and reduce their outflow. Furthermore, many voids have been tactfully designed in the ZAS/GRM adsorbents by using a water vapor project, which provide more active sites for congo red (CR) organic dye, thereby remarkably improving the removal efficiency of CR. From our purification of CR, we find that the CR adsorption capacity of the ZAS/GRM adsorbent is 3.509 mg g^-1, which is four times higher than pure GRM (0.820 mg g^-1). This study demonstrates our PWWM strategy is highly effective and can inspire more research on waste reuse.

Simple synthesis of chitosan/alginate/graphene oxide/UiO-67 amphoteric aerogels: Characterization, adsorption mechanism and application for removal of cationic and anionic dyes from complex dye media

A chitosan/alginate/graphene oxide/UiO-67 (CS/SA/GO/UiO-67) amphoteric aerogel was synthesized successfully. A series of characterization experiments of CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 amphoteric aerogel was performed by SEM, EDS, FT-IR, TGA, XRD, BET, and zeta potential. The competitive adsorption properties of different adsorbents for complex dyes wastewater (MB and CR) at room temperature (298 K) were compared. Langmuir isotherm model predicted that the maximum adsorption quantity of CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 for CR and MB was 1091.61 and 1313.95 mg/g, respectively. The optimum pH values of CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 for the adsorption of CR and MB were 5 and 10, respectively. The kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption of MB and CR on CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 was more suitable for the pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetic model, respectively. The isotherm study revealed that the adsorption of MB and CR was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption process of MB and CR was exothermic and spontaneous. FT-IR analysis and zeta potential characterization experiments revealed that the adsorption mechanism of MB and CR on CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 depended on π-π bond, hydrogen bond, and electrostatic attraction. Repeatable experiments showed that the removal rates of MB and CR of CS/SA/GO/UiO-67 after six cycles of adsorption were 67.19 and 60.82 %, respectively.

Fabrication of a corn stalk derived cellulose-based bio-adsorbent to remove Congo red from wastewater: Investigation on its ultra-high adsorption performance and mechanism

A cellulose-based bio-absorbent with various and plenty of amino groups was successfully prepared from corn stalk to achieve quantitative removal of Congo red from wastewater with wide pH values (5 ≤ pH ≤ 10). The maximum removal amount was 8.0 mmol·g^-1 (5572 mg·g^-1) under pH = 6.0 and 45 °C, which was obviously higher than reported absorbents. Investigation on dynamic adsorption and recyclability in authentic wastewater found that the removal efficiency of Congo red was >98 % within 180 min and decreased slightly in industrial water after five cycles, denoting this adsorbent with great potential for environmental application. The characterization results proved that 7.58 mmol·g^-1 of different amino groups (-NH₂, -NH- and -NR₂) were introduced on adsorbent surface by two steps of modification and were the major functional groups for adsorption of Congo red. The inferred adsorption mechanism revealed that Congo red could be adsorbed equivalently on the amino groups by strong electrostatic interactions or hydrogen bonds. Different amino groups played different roles in adsorption due to great differences in protonation ability in 5 ≤ pH ≤ 10. The study was expected to high-efficiently remove Congo red from acidic or alkaline wastewater, and offered an alternative strategy for biowaste treatment of corn stalks in a high value-added manner.

Bibliometric analysis of chitosan research for wastewater treatment: a review

Wastewater has negative impacts on the environment, such as destroying aquatic ecosystems and creating a shortage of clean water sources for consumption. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of chitosan to better understand the evolution in degrading various pollutants as a wastewater treatment research limited only by photocatalyst system published in 2001-2021. The number of publications analyzed a total of 456 documents, which was conducted from the Scopus database. All data in this paper was visualized by using open-source software, VOSviewer and Tableau, to perform bibliometric analysis and scientific mapping. The reason for choosing chitosan is its ability to degrade various pollutants with high adsorption performance (from various sources: degradation Congo red 98.4%, methylene blue 99.36%, rhodamine B 95%, and Cd(II) 94%), non-toxicity, biodegradability, and abundantly available sources in nature. The analysis results show that the highest number of publications in 2016 was 66, and the highest number of citations was 2258. The network of keywords and innovations for wastewater treatment is USA and China as the most productive countries with many cooperative relations. This paper helps scholars understand the evolution of composite chitosan-based photocatalyst systems as research on wastewater treatment from a bibliometric point of view and inspires them to develop new efficient methods in synthesizing chitosan from fish by-products (waste) with high adsorption efficiency for various type of waste.

Sulfidogenic Bioreactor-Mediated Formation of ZnS Nanoparticles with Antimicrobial and Photocatalytic Activity

The use of sulfidogenic bioreactors is a biotechnology trend to recover valuable metals such as copper and zinc as sulfide biominerals from mine-impacted waters. In the present work, ZnS nanoparticles were produced using "green" H₂S gas generated by a sulfidogenic bioreactor. ZnS nanoparticles were physico-chemically characterized by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, TEM, XRD and XPS. The experimental results showed spherical-like shape nanoparticles with principal zinc-blende crystalline structure, a semiconductor character with an optical band gap around 3.73 eV, and fluorescence emission in the UV-visible range. In addition, the photocatalytic activity on the degradation of organic dyes in water, as well as bactericidal properties against several bacterial strains, were studied. ZnS nanoparticles were able to degrade methylene blue and rhodamine in water under UV radiation, and also showed high antibacterial activity against different bacterial strains including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results open the way to obtain valorous ZnS nanoparticles from the use of dissimilatory reduction of sulfate using a sulfidogenic bioreactor.

Green synthesis of ZnFe2O4@ZnO nanocomposites using Chrysanthemum spp. floral waste for photocatalytic dye degradation

The occurrence of textile dyeing wastewater discharged into the environment has been recently increasing, resulting in harmful effects on living organisms and human health. The use of green nanoparticles for water decontamination has received much attention. Floral waste can be extracted with the release of natural compounds, which act as reducing and stabilizing agents during the biosynthesis of nanoparticles. Herein, we report the utilization of Chrysanthemum spp. floral waste extract to synthesize green ZnFe₂O₄@ZnO (ZFOZx) nanocomposites for the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red under solar light irradiation. The various molar ratio of ZnFe₂O₄ (0-50%) was incorporated into ZnO nanoparticles. The surface area of green ZFOZx nanocomposites was found to increase (7.41-42.66 m² g^-1) while their band gap energy decreased from 1.98 eV to 1.92 eV. Moreover, the results exhibited the highest Congo red dye degradation efficiency of 94.85% at a concentration of 5.0 mg L^-1, and a catalyst dosage of 0.33 g L^-1. The ^•O₂^- reactive species played a vital role in the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red dye. Green ZFOZ3 nanocomposites had good recyclability with at least three cycles, and an excellent stability. The germination results showed that wastewater treated by ZFOZ3 was safe enough for bean seed germination. We expect that this work contributes significantly to developing novel green bio-based nanomaterials for environmental remediation as well as reducing the harm caused by flower wastes.

Delicate Design of ZnS@In2S3 Core-Shell Structures with Modulated Photocatalytic Performance under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation

ZnS@In₂S₃ core-shell structures with high photocatalytic activity have been delicately designed and synthesized. The unique structure and synergistic effects of the composites have an important influence on the improvement of photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activity has been studied by photodegrading individual eosin B (EB) and the mixture solution consisting of eosin B and rhodamine B (EB-RhB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that all of the photocatalysts with different contents of In₂S₃ exhibit enhanced catalytic activity compared to pure ZnS for the degradation of EB and EB-RhB solution. When the theoretical molar ratio of ZnS to In₂S₃ was 1:0.5, the composite presents the highest photocatalytic efficiency, which could eliminate more than 98% of EB and 94% of EB-RhB. At the same time, after five cycles of photocatalytic tests, the photocatalytic efficiency could be about 96% for the degradation of the EB solution, and relatively high photocatalytic activity could also be obtained for the degradation of the EB-RhB mixed solution. This work has proposed a facile synthetic process to realize the controlled preparation of core-shell ZnS@In₂S₃ composites with effectively modulated structures and compositions, and the composites have also proved to be high-efficiency photocatalysts for the disposal of complicated pollutants.

Recent Developments in ZnS-Based Nanostructures Photocatalysts for Wastewater Treatment

The continuous growth of the world population has led to the constant increase of environmental pollution, with serious consequences for human health. Toxic, non-biodegradable, and recalcitrant organic pollutants (e.g., dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides) are discharged into water resources from various industries, such as textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, plastics, etc. Consequently, the treatment of industrial wastewater, via a sustainable technology, represents a great challenge for worldwide research. Photocatalytic technology, an innovative technique based on advanced oxidation process (AOP), is considered a green technology with promising prospects in the remediation of global environmental issues. In photocatalysis, a very important role is attributed to the photocatalyst, usually a semiconductor material with high solar light absorption capacity and conductivity for photogenerated-charge carriers. Zinc sulfide (ZnS), as n-type semiconductor with different morphologies and band gap energies (Eg = 3.2-3.71 eV), is recognized as a promising photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater, especially under UV light irradiation. This review deals with the recent developments (the last five years) in ZnS nanostructures (0D, 1D, 3D) and ZnS-based heterojunctions (n-n, n-p, Z scheme) used as photocatalysts for organic pollutants' degradation under simulated (UV, Vis) and sunlight irradiation in wastewater treatment. The effects of different synthesis parameters (precursors' type and concentration, capping agents' dosages, reaction time and temperature, metal doping, ZnS concentration in heterostructures, etc.) and properties (particle size, morphology, band gap energy, and surface properties) on the photocatalytic performance of ZnS-based photocatalysts for various organic pollutants' degradation are extensively discussed.

Multifunctional chitosan ferrogels for targeted cancer therapy by on-demand magnetically triggered drug delivery and hyperthermia

A facile method for the synthesis of chitosan ferrogels for magnetically triggered drug release and hyperthermia treatment is presented. The glyoxal crosslinked, dried ferrogels (magnetic bioaerogels) have been characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA and VSM analyses and they possess unique characteristics such as high porosity, ultra-low density and superparamagnetism (M_s up to 56 emu g^-1). In addition, they present high drug (Doxorubicin, DOX) loading efficiency (~40 %), tumor-specific pH-responsive swelling, excellent biodegradation, remotely switchable drug release and high magnetic hyperthermia potential (42 °C within 4 min). Almost complete degradation of the ferrogels occurs in 3 months under physiological conditions (pH = 7.4), while the tumor-specific microenvironment (pH = 5.6) accelerates the degradation rate, where it occurs in ~8 weeks. Furthermore, an enhancement in drug release (by 30 %) was observed in 60 min, when subjected to a magnetic field of 50 mT. Excellent biocompatibility and promising cell-material interactions have been exhibited by the ferrogels, substantiated by MTT assay, cytoskeleton staining and confocal imaging. The viability has been drastically reduced for DOX-loaded samples due to the action of the released drug; validating the efficacy of DOX loaded ferrogels. The system presented, therefore, holds multi-functionalities enabling smart cancer treatment.

Chitosan-based dual network composite hydrogel for efficient adsorption of methylene blue dye

With the rapid development of the textile industry, a large amount of dyeing wastewater discharge has caused great harm to the ecological environment. In this work, a dual-network, composite hydrogel adsorbent with excellent mechanical properties, good reusability, and large adsorption capacity was prepared by introducing chitosan cross-linked polyvinylamine into the N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide cross-linked polyacrylic acid network. The dual cross-linking network gave the hydrogel excellent mechanical properties with maximum tensile stress and strain up to 1.9 MPa and 920 %. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue on hydrogel was up to 596.14 mg/g. In addition, the prepared hydrogel exhibited good reusability, and their adsorption efficiency remained above 85 % in five consecutive cycles. The adsorption behavior was well fitted by Pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir equation, indicating that the hydrogel was chemisorbed to the dye as a monolayer. The adsorption mechanism analysis showed that the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the functional groups of the hydrogels and methylene blue molecules contributed to the good adsorption capacity. Overall, the synthesized composite hydrogels could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye, particularly from textile industry wastewater.

Nickel oxide nanoparticles synthesis using plant extract and evaluation of their antibacterial effects on Streptococcus mutans

Dental decay is known in the world as the most common human infectious disease. Ascending process of dental caries index in the world shows the failure of oral disease prevention. Streptococcus mutans bacteria cause acid damage and tooth decay by producing acid over time. Nanomaterials with suitable functionality, high permeability, extremely large surface area, significant reactivity, unique mechanical features, and non-bacterial resistance can be considered as promising agents for antimicrobial and antiviral applications. In this study, nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles with size range from 2 to 16 nm containing Stevia natural sweetener were eco-friendly synthesized via a simple method. Additionally, their various concentrations were evaluated on S. mutans bacteria by applying the broth dilution method. The results demonstrated that these spherical NiO nanoparticles had efficient bacteriostatic activity on this gram-positive coccus.

Effect of green synthesized ZnO nanoparticles using Paspalum scrobiculatum grains extract in biological applications

In this report, ZnO nanoparticles were biosynthesized using Paspalum scrobiculatum grains extract for the first time. GC-MS analysis explicated that diethyl phthalate was the major phytocompound with 94.09% in aqueous extract. ZnO nanoparticles formation was confirmed by various physicochemical analyses. HR-TEM images showed the hexagonal, rectangular shaped nanoparticles in 15-30 nm size. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic analyses showed the effective bioactivity of ZnO nanoparticles in 80 μg/ml concentration with 95.36%, 94.08%, and 91.96%, respectively. The morphological and tissue changes witnessed in larvicidal and insecticidal activities against Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Tribolium castaneum revealed the efficient nature of ZnO nanoparticles in 100 ppm at 48 h and 100 μg/kg at 72 h, respectively. The morphological changes in antibacterial activity demonstrated the bactericidal nature of ZnO nanoparticles against Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus in 150 μg/ml concentration. The morphological observations in anticancer activity against HepG2 liver cancer cells showed the potent drug features of ZnO nanoparticles in 100 μg/ml concentration with 97.18% of cytotoxicity. The ZnO nanoparticles showed no toxicity against HDF normal cells in lower concentrations and it explicated the biocompatible features of nanoparticles. The Vigna radiata plant growth was efficiently promoted by low (60 ppm) concentration of nanoparticles. The ZnO nanoparticles divulged effective degradation of IPA, EDTA, BQ, and DPBF in 75%, 45%, 55%, and 80% through ROS formation, respectively. Thus, the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles are biocompatible and inexpensive material compared to the traditional one and can be utilized as an efficient material in biological fields.

Extraction Optimization of Mucilage from Seeds of Mimosa pudica by Response Surface Methodology

Mimosa pudica seed mucilage (MPM) is composed of glucuronoxylan, which is a swellable, pH-responsive and non-toxic biomaterial. Herein, we aimed to extract MPM from M. pudica seeds (MP seeds) to ascertain optimization of extraction conditions to get highest yield by response surface methodology, via Box-Behnken design (RSM-BBD). MPM was extracted from MP seeds by a hot water extraction method. The effects of four different parameters on the extraction yield of MPM were evaluated: pH of the extraction medium (1–10), seed/water contact time (1–12 h), the temperature of extraction medium (30–90 °C), and seed/water ratio (1:5–1:35 w/v). The maximum yield of MPM obtained by Design-Expert software was 10.66% (10.66 g/100 g) at pH 7, seed/water contact time of 6 h, extraction temperature of 50 °C, and seed/water ratio of 1:20 w/v. The p values of ANOVA were found to be less than 0.0001, which indicated that the extraction yield of MPM was significantly affected by all the study parameters. The results revealed that pH and extraction temperature were the most significant factors affecting the yield of MPM. MPM in compressed tablet form showed pH-responsive on–off switching behavior at pH 7.4 and 1.2 in a reversible manner. MPM in compressed tablet form sustained the release of itopride for 16 h following a super case-II transport mechanism and zero-order release kinetics.

Mesoporous Nano-Sized BiFeVOx.y Phases for Removal of Organic Dyes from Wastewaters by Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation

With an increasing demand for industrial dyes in our daily lives, water conditions have become worse. Recently, the removal of such environmentally hazardous pollutants from wastewaters through photocatalytic degradation has been drawing increased attention. Three mesoporous nanophases of BiFeVOx.y as (Bi₂Fe^IIIV_1−yO_5.5−y) visible light photocatalysts were synthesized in this study using ethylene glycol-citrate sol-gel synthesis combined with microwave- assisted calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry (UV-Vis/DRS) were used to characterize the BiFeVOx.y photocatalysts. The visible light-induced photocatalytic activities of the BiFeVOx.y phases were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solution at pH ~10.0. The results of this study show that the combination of doping strategy with the utilization of advanced synthesis methods plays an important role in improving the structure and surface properties of BiFeVOx.y phases, and thereby enhancing their adsorption and photocatalytic efficiencies. The synthesized mesoporous tetragonal γ-BiFeVOx.y nanophase has been proven to be a potential visible-light photocatalyst for the degradation of organic dyes.

Chitosan as a Tool for Sustainable Development: A Mini Review

New developments require innovative ecofriendly materials defined by their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility. For that reason, the scientific society is focused on biopolymers such as chitosan, which is the second most abundant in the world after cellulose. These new materials should show good properties in terms of sustainability, circularity, and energy consumption during industrial applications. The idea is to replace traditional raw materials with new ecofriendly materials which contribute to keeping a high production rate but also reducing its environmental impact and the costs. The chitosan shows interesting and unique properties, thus it can be used for different purposes which contributes to the design and development of sustainable novel materials. This helps in promoting sustainability through the use of chitosan and diverse materials based on it. For example, it is a good sustainable alternative for food packaging or it can be used for sustainable agriculture. The chitosan can also reduce the pollution of other industrial processes such as paper production. This mini review collects some of the most important advances for the sustainable use of chitosan for promoting circular economy. Hence, the present review focuses on different aspects of chitosan from its synthesis to multiple applications.
