Improved stability of Ni/SiO2 catalysts in CO2 and steam reforming of methane by preparation via a polymer-assisted route

2,5-Dimethylfuran Production by Catalytic Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Using Ni Supported on Al2O3-TiO2-ZrO2 Prepared by Sol-Gel Method: The Effect of Hydrogen Donors

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) has been described as one of the 12 key platform molecules derived from biomass by the US Department of Energy, and its hydrogenation reaction produces versatile liquid biofuels such as 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF). Catalytic hydrogenation from 5-HMF to 2,5-DMF was thoroughly studied on the metal nickel catalysts supported on Al2O3-TiO2-ZrO2 (Ni/ATZ) mixed oxides using isopropanol and formic acid (FA) as hydrogen donors to find the best conditions of the reaction and hydrogen donor. The influence of metal content (wt%), Ni particle size (nm), Nickel Ni0, Ni0/NiO and NiO species, metal active sites and acid-based sites on the catalyst surface, and the effect of the hydrogen donor (isopropanol and formic acid) were systematically studied. The structural characteristics of the materials were studied using different physicochemical methods, including N2 physisorption, XRD, Raman, DRS UV-Vis, FT-IR, SEM, FT-IR Pyad, H2-TPD, CO2-TPD, H2-TPR, TEM and XPS. Second-generation 2,5-DMF biofuel and 5-HMF conversion by-products were analyzed and elucidated using 1H NMR. It was found that the Ni0NiO/ATZ3WI catalyst synthesized by the impregnation method (WI) generated a good synergistic effect between the species, showing the best catalytic hydrogenation of 5-HMF to 2,5-DMF using formic acid as a hydrogen donor for 24 h of reaction and temperature of 210 °C with 20 bar pressure of Argon (Ar).

Functional use of CO2 to mitigate the formation of bisphenol A in catalytic pyrolysis of polycarbonate

The growing consumption of plastic materials has increased hazardous threats to all environmental media, since current plastic waste management methods release microplastics and toxic chemicals. As such, massive generation of plastic derived pollutants leads to significant public health and environmental problems. In this work, an environmentally sound method for valorization of plastic waste is suggested. In detail, pyrolysis of polycarbonate-containing plastic waste such as automotive headlight housing (AHH) was carried out using CO₂ as a co-reactant. AHH was chosen as it discharges bisphenol A (BPA) and aromatic compounds. Under CO₂ condition, emissions of BPA and its derivatives were suppressed by 14.5% due to gas phase reactions (GPRs) with CO₂. Nevertheless, reaction kinetics for GPRs was not significant. To impart the GPRs, catalytic pyrolysis was done using Ni and Co-based catalysts. During catalytic pyrolysis, syngas production was more than tenfold up comparing to pyrolysis without catalyst. The expedited GPRs over catalysts resulted in the enhanced syngas formation. Total concentration of the toxic chemicals from CO₂-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of AHH decreased by 86.1% and 66.7% over Ni and Co catalysts, comparing to those from N₂ environment.

Synergistic effects of CO2 on complete thermal degradation of plastic waste mixture through a catalytic pyrolysis platform: A case study of disposable diaper

Consumption of diverse plastics has posed an environmental threat because their disposal practices, landfilling and incineration, release toxic chemicals and microplastics into all environmental media. Indeed, heterogeneous matrix of plastic wastes makes them hard to be disposed. As such, this study aimed to introduce an environmentally benign/reliable disposal platform for complete decomposition of plastic wastes. Pyrolysis process was adapted to convert plastics into syngas, and a disposable diaper (DD) was used as model plastic waste, because it is composed of a variety of polymeric materials. Pyrolysis of DD resulted in the formation of gaseous products and pyrogenic oils, composed of (oxygenated) hydrocarbons. Nonetheless, reactivity of CO₂ as an oxidant in pyrolysis of DD was negligible. To impart the strong/desired reactivity of CO₂, Ni-based catalyst was adopted. Ni catalyst enhanced H₂ and CO formations 4 and 15 times more than pyrolysis without catalyst at 700 °C under CO₂. The value-added syngas production was originated from the reduction of polymeric waste, and its derivatives including aromatic compounds. Thus, CO₂ offered a strategic means to produce value-added chemicals and reduce aromaticity of pyrogenic products. The observations could offer an innovative way to control the fate of toxic chemicals derived from plastic pyrolysis.

Valorization of disposable COVID-19 mask through the thermo-chemical process

It becomes common to wear a disposable face mask to protect from coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) amid this pandemic. However, massive generations of contaminated face mask cause environmental concerns because current disposal processes (i.e., incineration and reclamation) for them release toxic chemicals. The disposable mask is made of different compounds, making it hard to be recycled. In this regard, this work suggests an environmentally benign disposal process, simultaneously achieving the production of valuable fuels from the face mask. To this end, CO2-assisted thermo-chemical process was conducted. The first part of this work determined the major chemical constituents of a disposable mask: polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, and Fe. In the second part, pyrolysis study was employed to produce syngas and C1-2 hydrocarbons (HCs) from the disposable mask. To enhance syngas and C1-2 HCs formations, multi-stage pyrolysis was used for more C-C and C-H bonds scissions of the disposable mask. Catalytic pyrolysis over Ni/SiO2 further expedited H2 and CH4 formations due to its capability for dehydrogenation. In the presence of CO2, catalytic pyrolysis additionally produced CO, while pyrolysis in N2 did not produce it. Therefore, the thermo-chemical conversion of disposable face mask and CO2 could be an environmentally benign way to remove COVID-19 plastic waste, generating value-added products.

CO2-cofed catalytic pyrolysis of tea waste over Ni/SiO2 for the enhanced formation of syngas

To valorize tea waste (TW), catalytic pyrolysis was done as a practical measure for recovering energy as a form of syngas. Considering CO₂ as a reactive gas medium in place of conventional pyrolysis gas, a sustainable pyrolysis platform was established. In addition, mechanistic effectiveness of CO₂ on TW pyrolysis was examined. In the presence of CO₂, homogeneous reaction with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from TW pyrolysis contributed to CO formation. To enhance the formation of syngas at low pyrolysis temperature, catalytic pyrolysis over a Ni/SiO₂ was investigated. The synergistic effects of Ni/SiO₂ catalyst and CO₂ promoted thermal cracking of VOCs and further homogeneous reaction with CO₂, thereby resulting in the substantial enhancement (28 times more) of H₂ and CO production than non-catalytic pyrolysis. It was also confirmed that CO₂ could be considered a reactive gas medium to produce biochar (34-35 wt.% yield), having competitive porosity and surface area, in comparison to that from pyrolysis in N₂. Therefore, CO₂ can be employed to build a sustainable waste conversion platform for energy and biochar production through pyrolysis instead of using N₂.
