A pair of chiral Pt(II) complexes coordinated by simple BINOL and bipyridine ligands displaying aggregation-induced phosphorescence and circularly polarized luminescence were characterized by X-ray crystallography and absorption and emission spectroscopies. The emission of the powder sample was reddish whereas the thin film dispersed in PMMA (f_Pf = 1 wt%) exhibited a white emission.

Photoactive silicon surfaces functionalized with high-quality and redox-active platinum diimine complex monolayers

Platinum diimine complexes can covalently be grafted onto oxide-free, hydrogen-terminated silicon(111) surfaces into clean and high-quality monolayers. The so modified surfaces offer great prospects as photocathodes for solar-driven electrocatalysis.

Platinum diimine-dithiolate complexes as a new class of photoconducting compounds for pristine photodetectors: case study on [Pt(bipy)(Naph-edt)] (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Naph-edt2- = 2-naphthylethylene-1,2-dithiolate)

The photoconducting properties of platinum diimine-dithiolate complex [Pt(bipy)(Naph-edt)] (1; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Naph-edt2- = 2-naphthylethylene-1,2-dithiolate) were investigated. DFT calculations on a model assembly with four complex units suggest that the high external quantum efficency measured on a prototype photodetector correlates with the intermolecular character of electronic excitations in the visible region.

Photoconducting Devices with Response in the Visible-Near-Infrared Region Based on Neutral Ni Complexes of Aryl-1,2-dithiolene Ligands

Metal bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes belonging to the class [Ni(Ar-edt)₂]^x- [Ar-edt^2- = arylethylene-1,2-dithiolate; Ar = phenyl, (1^x-), 2-naphthyl (2^x-); x = 0 and 1] were fully characterized by NMR, UV-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR), diffuse reflectance, and FT-IR spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These complexes have emerged as new photoconducting materials that allowed for the development of a prototype of photodetectors with response in the vis-NIR region. The photodetecting devices showed in some cases quantum efficiencies orders of magnitude higher than those of previously reported 1,2-dithiolene systems.

Uncommon Optical Properties and Silver-Responsive Turn-Off/On Luminescence in a PtII Heteroleptic Dithiolene Complex

Complex [Pt(iPr₂ pipdt)(Quinoxdt)] (iPr₂ pipdt=1,4-diisopropyl-piperazine-2,3-dithione; Quinoxdt=[1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline-2,3-dithiolate) exhibits a remarkable green emission at 570 nm (room temperature), which is above the lowest excited state. The complex is characterized by negative solvatochromism as well as a high second-order polarizability. Addition of Ag^I ions induces 1) hypsochromic shift of the lowest frequencies and 2) reversible quenching of luminescence. The corresponding Ni and Pd complexes have also been prepared and investigated to assist interpretation of optical properties within the triad. Computational studies based on DFT and time-dependent DFT highlight the electronic properties of [Pt(iPr₂ pipdt)(Quinoxdt)]. The preferential site of interaction between the Pt complex and incoming Ag^I is evidenced by the shape of the Fukui functions, pointing to the thiolic sulfur and platinum atoms as the most reactive sites towards a soft cation. Calculated optical properties are in agreement with experimental findings. This study sheds light on the structure-property relationship for this class of compounds.

Proton reduction reaction catalyzed by homoleptic nickel bis-1,2-dithiolate complexes: Experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigations

A series of homoleptic monoanionic nickel dithiolene complexes [Ni(bdt)2](NBu4), [Ni(tdt)2](NBu4), and [Ni(mnt)2](NBu4) containing the ligands benzene-1,2-dithiolate (bdt2-), toluene-3,4-dithiolate (tdt2-) and maleonitriledithiolate (mnt2-), respectively, have been employed as electrocatalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction with trifluoroacetic acid as proton source in acetonitrile. All complexes were active catalysts with TONs reaching 113, 158 and 6 for [Ni(bdt)2](NBu4), [Ni(tdt)2](NBu4), and [Ni(mnt)2](NBu4), respectively. Faradaic yield for hydrogen evolution reaction reaches 88 % for 2- , which also displays the minimal overpotential requirement value (467 mV) within the series. Two pathways for H2 evolution can be hypothesized that differ on on the sequence of protonation and reduction steps. DFT calculations are in agreement with experimental data and indicate that protonation at sulfur follows reduction to the dianion. Hydrogen evolves from the direduced-diprotonated form via a highly distorted nickel hydride intermediate. The effects of acid strength and concentration in the hydrogen-evolving mechanism are also discussed.

A computational investigation into the catalytic activity of a diselenolene sulfite oxidase biomimetic complex

Molybdenum is the only 4d metal found in almost all life. One such molybdenum-containing enzyme is sulfite oxidase, which also contains the dithiolene-molybdopterin ligand. Sulfite oxidase is essential in the degradation of sulfur-containing compounds such as cysteine and methionine. Past work has shown parallels in the chemistry of dithiolene–metal and diselenolene–metal complexes. Thus, in this present work, the oxygen atom transfer mechanism for a diselenolene sulfite oxidase biomimetic complex was investigated using computational tools, the results of which were compared to the analogous dithiolene biomimetic complex. From the results obtained, the molybdenum-diselenolene sulfite oxidase biomimetic complex is able to catalyse the oxygen atom transfer and does so with a marginally lower value of ΔrG‡ than that for the analogous dithiolene complex. In particular, it was found that on average, the diselenolene complex had an activation energy 1.2 kJ mol–1 lower in energy than the analogous dithiolene complex. However, the calculated value of ΔrG suggests that the oxidation of sulfite is more favourable for the dithiolene complex where the average difference in reaction aqueous Gibbs reaction energy was –9.4 kJ mol–1 relative to the diselenolene complex. It is noted that with the use of D3 and D3BJ corrections in combination with the B3LYP functional, the barrier for oxygen atom transfer is lowered by more than 30.0 kJ mol–1 for both the diselenolene and dithiolene complexes. Such results suggest that to study such oxo-transfer reactions, the proper treatment of dispersion interaction is necessary.

Experimental and Theoretical Insight into Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution with Nickel Bis(aryldithiolene) Complexes as Catalysts

A series of neutral and monoanionic nickel dithiolene complexes with p-methoxyphenyl-substituted 1,2-dithiolene ligands have been prepared and characterized with physicochemical methods. Two of the complexes, the monoanion of the symmetric [Ni{S2C2(Ph-p-OCH3)2}2] (3(-)) with NBu4(+) as a counterion and the neutral asymmetric [Ni{S2C2(Ph)(Ph-p-OCH3)}2] (2), have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. All complexes have been employed as proton-reducing catalysts in N,N-dimethylformamide with trifluoroacetic acid as the proton source. The complexes are active catalysts with good faradaic yields, reaching 83% for 2 but relatively high overpotential requirements (0.91 and 1.55 V measured at the middle of the catalytic wave for two processes observed depending on the different routes of the mechanism). The similarity of the experimental data regardless of whether the neutral or anionic form of the complexes is used indicates that the neutral form acts as a precatalyst. On the basis of detailed density functional theory calculations, the proposed mechanism reveals two different main routes after protonation of the dianion of the catalyst in accordance with the experimental data, indicating the role of the concentration of the acid and the influence of the methoxy groups. Protonation at sulfur seems be more favorable than that at the metal, which is in marked contrast with the catalytic mechanism proposed for analogous cobalt dithiolene complexes.

Role of the acceptor in tuning the properties of metal [M(II) = Ni, Pd, Pt] dithiolato/dithione (donor/acceptor) second-order nonlinear chromophores: combined experimental and theoretical studies

The mixed-ligand complexes [M(II)(Et2dazdt)(mnt)] (M = Ni, 1; Pd, 2; Pt, 3) [Et2dazdt = N,N'-diethyl-perhydrodiazepine-2,3-dithione; mnt = maleonitrile-2,3-dithiolate] have been prepared and fully characterized. X-ray diffractometric studies on 1-3 (the structure of 1 was already known) show that the crystals are isostructural (triclinic, P-1), and two independent molecular entities are present in the unit cell. These entities differ in the orientation of the ethyl substituents with respect to the epta-atomic ring. In the C2S2MS2C2 dithiolene core the four sulfur atoms define a square-planar coordination environment of the metal where the M-S bond distances involving the two ligands are similar, while the C-S bond distances in the C2S2 units exhibit a significant difference in Et2dazdt (dithione) and mnt (dithiolato) ligands. 1-3 show in the visible region one or two moderately strong absorption peaks, having ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (CT) character with some contribution of the metal, and show negative solvatochromism and molecular quadratic optical nonlinearity, which was determined by the EFISH (electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation) technique. These complexes are redox active and show two reversible reduction waves and one irreversible oxidation wave. Theoretical calculations based on DFT and TD-DFT calculations on complexes 1-3 as well as on [Pt(Bz2pipdt)(mnt)] (4) and [Pt(Bz2pipdt)(dmit)] (5) highlight the factors which affect the optical properties of these second-order redox-active NLO chromophores. Actually, the torsion angle of the dithione system (δ2) inversely correlates either with the oscillator strengths of the main transition of the complexes or with their beta values. The high beta value of 5 can be attributed both to its lowest torsion angles and to the extent of the π system of its dithiolate ligand, dmit.

New PtII diimine–dithiolate complexes containing a 1,2-dithiolate-1,2-closo-dicarbadodecarborane: an experimental and theoretical investigation

A new class of solvatochromic diimine–dithiolate complexes [Pt(N^N)(dtoc)] (dtoc²⁻ = 1,2-dithiolate-1,2-closo-dicarbadodecaborane) is reported.

Synthesis, characterization and light harvesting properties of nickel(II) diimine dithiolate complexes

Four Ni(II) diimine dithiolato complexes viz. [Ni{(S2C2Ph2)(1,10-Phenanthroline)}] (2), [Ni{(S2C2Ph2)(3,3'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridyl)}] (3), [Ni{(S2C2Ph2)(4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridyl)}] (4) [Ni{(S2C2Ph2)(2,2'-bipyridyl)}] (5) have been prepared from [Ni(S2C2Ph2)2] (1) and characterized by microanalyses, UV-Vis, IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR. Attempts have been made to explain the nature of charge transfer in these molecules through quantum chemical calculations. The light harvesting properties of all the compounds have been studied using these compounds as photosensitizers in TiO2-based DSSC. The change in position of anchoring group on diimine derivative leads to different structural, electronic and light harvesting properties about the Ni(II) diimine dithiolate dyes.

Oxo-Mo(IV)(dithiolene)thiolato complexes: analogue of reduced sulfite oxidase

A series of [Mo(IV)O(mnt)(SR)(N-N)](-) (mnt = maleonitriledithiolate; R = Ph, nap, p-Cl-Ph, p-CO2H-Ph, and p-NO2-Ph; N-N = 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)) complexes analogous to the reduced active site of enzymes of the sulfite oxidase family has been synthesized and their participation in electron transfer reactions studied. Equatorial thiolate and dithiolene ligations have been used to closely simulate the three sulfur coordinations present in the native molybdenum active site. These synthetic analogues have been shown to participate in electron transfer via a pentavalent EPR-active Mo(V) intermediate with minimal structural change as observed electrochemically by reversible oxidative responses. The role of the redox-active dithiolene ligand as an electron transfer gate between external oxidants and the molybdenum center could be envisaged in one of the analogue systems where the initial transient EPR signal with <g> = 2.008 is replaced by the appearance of a typical Mo(V)-centered EPR (<g> = 1.976) signal. The appearance of such a ligand-based transient radical at the initial stage has been supported by the ligand-centered frontier orbital from DFT calculation. A stepwise rationale has been provided by computational study to show that the coupled effects of the diimine bite angle and the thiolato dihedral angle determine the metal- or ligand-based frontier orbital occupancy. DFT calculation has further supported the similarity between the reduced, semireduced, and oxidized resting state of the molybdenum center in Moco of SO with the synthesized complexes and their corresponding one-electron and fully oxidized species.

Combined experimental and theoretical study on redox-active d8 metal dithione-dithiolato complexes showing molecular second-order nonlinear optical activity

Synthesis, characterization, NLO properties, and theoretical studies of the mixed-ligand dithiolene complexes of the nickel triad [M(II)(Bz(2)pipdt)(mnt)] (Bz(2)pipdt = 1,4-dibenzyl-piperazine-3,2-dithione, mnt = maleonitriledithiolato, M(II) = Ni, 1, Pd, 2, Pt, 3) are reported. Molecular structural characterization of 1-3 points out that four sulfur atoms are in a slightly distorted square-planar geometry. While the M-S bond distances are only slightly different, comparison of the C-C and C-S bonds in the C(2)S(2)MS(2)C(2) core allows us to point out a significant difference between the C-C and the C-S distances in Bz(2)pipdt and mnt. These findings suggest assigning a dithiolato character to mnt (pull ligand) and a dithione one (push ligand) to Bz(2)pipdt. Cyclic voltammetry of 1-3 exhibits two reversible reduction waves and a broad irreversible oxidation wave. These complexes are characterized in the visible region by a peak of moderately strong intensity, which undergoes negative solvatochromism. The molecular quadratic optical nonlinearities were determined by the EFISH technique, which provided the following values μβ(λ) (10(-48) esu) = -1436 (1), -1450 (2), and -1950 (3) converted in μβ(0) (10(-48) esu) = -463 (1), -684 (2), and -822 (3), showing that these complexes exhibit large negative second-order polarizabilities whose values depend on the metal, being highest for the Pt compound. DFT and TD-DFT calculations on 1-3 allow us to correlate geometries and electronic structures. Moreover, the first molecular hyperpolarizabilities have been calculated, and the results obtained support that the most appealing candidate as a second-order NLO chromophore is the platinum compound. This is due to (i) the most extensive mixture of the dithione/metal/dithiolato orbitals, (ii) the influence of the electric field of the solvent on the frontier orbitals that maximizes the difference in dipole moments between the excited and the ground state, and (iii) the largest oscillator strength in the platinum case vs nickel and palladium ones.

Redox-switchable chromophores based on metal (Ni, Pd, Pt) mixed-ligand dithiolene complexes showing molecular second-order nonlinear-optical activity

The synthesis and full characterization of the redox-active nickel triad mixed-ligand dithiolene complexes based on Bz(2)pipdt = 1,4-dibenzylpiperazine-3,2-dithione and dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate ligands are reported. These complexes show a reversibly bleacheable solvatochromic peak and a remarkably high negative molecular first hyperpolarizability, whose values depend on the metal being highest for the platinum(II) compound.
