Covalent organic frameworks in tribology - A perspective

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous materials formed through covalent bonds between organic building blocks. COFs uniquely combine a large surface area, an excellent stability, numerous abundant active sites, and tunable functionalities, thus making them highly attractive for numerous applications. Especially, their abundant active sites and weak interlayer interaction make these materials promising candidates for tribological research. Recently, notable attention has been paid to COFs as lubricant additives due to their excellent tribological performance. Our review aims at critically summarizing the state-of-art developments of 2D COFs in tribology. We discuss their structural and functional design principles, as well as synthetic strategies with a special focus on tribology. The generation of COF thin films is also assessed in detail, which can alleviate their most challenging drawbacks for this application. Subsequently, we analyze the existing state-of-the-art regarding the usage of COFs as lubricant additives, self-lubrication composite coatings, and solid lubricants at the nanoscale. Finally, critical challenges and future trends of 2D COFs in tribology are outlined to initiate and boost new research activities in this exciting field.

Flexible hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs): opportunities and challenges

Flexible behavior is one of the most fascinating features of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), which represent an emerging class of porous materials that are self-assembled via H-bonding between organic building units. Due to their unique flexibility, HOFs can undergo structural changes or transformations in response to various stimuli (physical or chemical). Taking advantage of this unique structural feature, flexible HOFs show potential in multifunctional applications such as gas storage/separation, molecular recognition, sensing, proton conductivity, biomedicine, etc. While some other flexible porous materials have been extensively studied, the dynamic behavior of HOFs remains relatively less explored. This perspective highlights the inherent flexible properties of HOFs, discusses their different flexible behaviors, including pore size/shape changes, interpenetration/stacking manner, H-bond breaking/reconstruction, and local dynamic behavior, and highlights their potential applications. We believe that this perspective will not only contribute to HOF chemistry and materials science, but will also facilitate the ongoing extensive research on dynamic porous materials.

A microporous polymer based on nonconjugated hindered biphenyls that emits blue light

Microporous organic polymers that have three-dimensional connectivity stemming from monomers with tetrahedral or tetrahedron-like geometry can have high surface areas and strong fluorescence. There are however few examples of such polymers based on hindered biaryls, and their fluorescence has not been studied. Hypothesizing that the contortion in a hindered biphenyl moiety would modulate the optical properties of a polymer built from it, we synthesized a meta-enchained polyphenylene from a 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based monomer, in which the two phenyl rings are nearly mutually perpendicular. The polymer was microporous with SBET = 495 m2 g-1. The polymer absorbed near-UV light and emitted blue fluorescence despite the meta-enchainment that would have been expected to break the conjugation. A related copolymer, synthesized from 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based and unsubstituted biphenyl-based monomers, was microporous but not fluorescent.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Linkage Chemistry and Its Critical Role in The Evolution of π Electronic Structures and Functions

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide a molecular platform for designing a novel class of functional materials with well-defined structures. A crucial structural parameter is the linkage, which dictates how knot and linker units are connected to form two-dimensional polymers and layer frameworks, shaping ordered π-array and porous architectures. However, the roles of linkage in the development of ordered π electronic structures and functions remain fundamental yet unresolved issues. Here we report the designed synthesis of COFs featuring four representative linkages: hydrazone, imine, azine, and C=C bonds, to elucidate their impacts on the evolution of π electronic structures and functions. Our observations revealed that the hydrazone linkage provides a non-conjugated connection, while imine and azine allow partial π conjugation, and the C=C bond permits full π-conjugation. Importantly, the linkage profoundly influences the control of π electronic structures and functions, unraveling its pivotal role in determining key electronic properties such as band gap, frontier energy levels, light absorption, luminescence, carrier density and mobility, and magnetic permeability. These findings highlight the significance of linkage chemistry in COFs and offer a general and transformative guidance for designing framework materials to achieve electronic functions.

Dual Brønsted acidic-basic function immobilized on the 3D mesoporous polycalix [4]resorcinarene: As a highly recyclable catalyst for the synthesis of spiro acenaphthylene/indene heterocycles

In this study, a novel dual Brønsted acidic-basic nano-scale porous organic polymer catalyst, PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H, was synthesized through various steps: preparation of a 3D network of polycalix, modification with (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxysilane, then functionalization of polymer with piperazine and n-butyl sulfonic acid under the provided conditions. The catalyst characterization was performed by FT-IR, TGA, EDS, elemental mapping, PXRD, TEM, and FE-SEM analyses, confirming high chemical stability, activity, recoverability, and excellent covalent anchoring of functional groups. So, the designed catalyst was utilized for preparing spiro-acenaphthylene and amino-spiroindene heterocycles, providing good performance with a high yield of the corresponding products. Accordingly, this catalyst can be used in different organic transformations. Necessary experiments were conducted for the recyclability test of the polymeric catalyst, and the results showed the PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H catalyst can be reused 10 times without any decrease in its activity or quality with excellent stability. The structure of resultant spiro heterocycles was confirmed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT-IR.

Modulating β-Keto-enamine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Atom-Transfer Radical Addition Reaction

The atom-transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction simultaneously forges carbon-carbon and carbon-halogen bonds. However, frequently-used photosensitizers such as precious transition metal complexes, or organic dyes have limitations in terms of their potential toxicity and recyclability. Three β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol and 1,4-phenylenediamines with variable transient photocurrent and photocatalytic activity have been prepared. A COF bearing electron-deficient Cl atoms displayed the highest photocatalytic activity toward the ATRA reaction of polyhalogenated alkanes to give halogenated olefins under visible light at room temperature. This heterogeneous photocatalyst exhibited good functional group tolerance and could be recycled without significant loss of activity.

Sustainable remediation of pesticide pollutants using covalent organic framework - A review on material properties, synthesis methods and application

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have emerged as a potential class of materials for a variety of applications in a wide number of sectors including power storage, environmental services, and biological applications due to their ordered and controllable porosity, large surface area, customizable structure, remarkable stability, and diverse electrical characteristics. COF have received a lot of attention in recent years in the field of environmental remediation, It also find its way to eliminate the emerging pollutant from the environment notably pesticide from polluted water. This review more concentrated on the application of COF in pesticide removal by modifying COF structure, COF synthesis and material properties. To increase the adsorption ability and selectivity of the material towards certain pesticides removal, the synthesis of COF involves organic linkers with various functional groups such as amine, carboxylic acid groups etc. The COF have a high degree of stability and endurance make them suitable for intermittent usage in water treatment applications. This review manifests the novel progress where modified COFs employed in a prominent manner to remove pesticides from polluted water. Some examples of COF application in the eradication of pesticides are triformyl phenylene framework functionalized with amine groups has capacity to remove up to 50 mg/l of Organophosphorus - chlorpyrifos. COF modified to improve their photocatalytic capacity to breakdown the pesticide under visible light irradiation. COF tetraphenyl ethylene linked with carboxylic acid group shows efficient photocatalytic degradation of 90% of organochlorine insecticide endosulfan when subjected to visible light. Atrazine and imidacloprid are reduced from 100 ppm to 1 ppm in aqueous solutions by COF based on high adsorption capacity. In addition, the strategies, technique, synthesis and functional group modification design of COF are discussed.

Sunflower-like missing-linker covalent organic framework for efficient extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

As excellent crystalline materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are widely used in drug adsorption. In this work, a defective engineering strategy was proposed for designing and preparing the functionalized end-capping monomer and missing-linker COFs. The missing-linker COF 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde compound with glycidyltrimethyl ammonium chloride modified benzene-1,4-diamine (TpPa-GTA) was synthesized through Schiff base reaction with wide pore size distribution for adsorption of four nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the four drugs reached adsorption equilibrium within 10 min. The sunflower-like structure helps to promote intraparticle diffusion during the adsorption process, thereby realizing the rapid adsorption of TpPa-GTA. The equilibrium isotherms fit well with both the Freundlich and Langmuir models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 83.3-315 mg g-1 calculated from the Langmuir model. Based on the detection results of Zeta potential and XPS, the adsorption mechanism was inferred, and the rapid capture of NSAIDs in the wide pH range of 4.0 to 7.5 was realized under electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction. The detection of lake and river samples using the missing adapter TpPa-GTA has a recovery rate of 84.2-117%, which provides a new approach to the adsorption of pollutants with COFs.

Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization for porous poly-phenylenes with exceptional gas uptake properties

We report the synthesis of two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous polyphenylenes (2D/3D-pPPs) via the Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization reaction. The resulting 2D and 3D-pPPs showed surface areas up to 1553 m2 g-1, pore volumes of 1.45 cm3 g-1 and very high H2 uptake capacities of 7.4 and 7.1 wt% at 77 K, respectively, along with a competitive high-pressure CO2 and CH4 uptake performance.

Recent Advances in and Applications of Electrochemical Sensors Based on Covalent Organic Frameworks for Food Safety Analysis

The international community has been paying close attention to the issue of food safety as a matter of public health. The presence of a wide range of contaminants in food poses a significant threat to human health, making it vital to develop detection methods for monitoring these chemical contaminants. Electrochemical sensors using emerging materials have been widely employed to detect food-derived contaminants. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have the potential for extensive applications due to their unique structure, high surface area, and tunable pore sizes. The review summarizes and explores recent advances in electrochemical sensors modified with COFs for detecting pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metal ions, and other food contaminants. Furthermore, future challenges and possible solutions will be discussed regarding food safety analysis using COFs.

(3,3)-Connected Triazine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient CO2 Separation over N2 and Dye Adsorption

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a promising class of adsorption and separation materials that can meet the needs of ecological sustainability, such as the removal of carbon dioxide and organic dyes. The two synthesized (3,3)-connected triazine-based COFs demonstrate high specific surface area and good thermal and chemical stability. COFZ1 shows good CO2 adsorption selectivities for different CO2 and N2 volume percentage systems at 273 K and 1 bar, with an ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) CO2 selectivity (i.e., separation factor) of 35.09 for the simulated flue gas component and a CO2 adsorption capacity of 24.21 cm3 g-1. In the aqueous dye solutions, both COFs present good adsorption performance for the selected dyes, and the maximum adsorption capacities of COFZ1 for methylene blue (MB) and gentian violet (GV) reach 510 and 564 mg g-1, respectively. Each of the two COFs shows a high anti-interference performance and excellent recyclability. The adsorption capacities of two COFs for RhB (Rhodamine B), MB, and GV hardly vary with pH values and salt concentrations. The adsorption behaviors of the two COFs for dyes follow Langmuir isothermal adsorption and quasi-secondary kinetic adsorption, approaching monolayer adsorption and chemisorption.

Recent Advances in Bimetallic Nanoporous Gold Electrodes for Electrochemical Sensing

Bimetallic nanocomposites and nanoparticles have received tremendous interest recently because they often exhibit better properties than single-component materials. Improved electron transfer rates and the synergistic interactions between individual metals are two of the most beneficial attributes of these materials. In this review, we focus on bimetallic nanoporous gold (NPG) because of its importance in the field of electrochemical sensing coupled with the ease with which it can be made. NPG is a particularly important scaffold because of its unique properties, including biofouling resistance and ease of modification. In this review, several different methods to synthesize NPG, along with varying modification approaches are described. These include the use of ternary alloys, immersion-reduction (chemical, electrochemical, hybrid), co-electrodeposition-annealing, and under-potential deposition coupled with surface-limited redox replacement of NPG with different metal nanoparticles (e.g., Pt, Cu, Pd, Ni, Co, Fe, etc.). The review also describes the importance of fully characterizing these bimetallic nanocomposites and critically analyzing their structure, surface morphology, surface composition, and application in electrochemical sensing of chemical and biochemical species. The authors attempt to highlight the most recent and advanced techniques for designing non-enzymatic bimetallic electrochemical nanosensors. The review opens up a window for readers to obtain detailed knowledge about the formation and structure of bimetallic electrodes and their applications in electrochemical sensing.

Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Composites for Wastewater Remediation

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high specific surface area, tailored structure, easy functionalization, and excellent chemical stability have been extensively exploited as fantastic materials in various fields. However, in most cases, COFs prepared in powder form suffer from the disadvantages of tedious operation, strong tendency to agglomerate, and poor recyclability, greatly limiting their practical application in environmental remediation. To tackle these issues, the fabrication of magnetic COFs (MCOFs) has attracted tremendous attention. In this review, several reliable strategies for the fabrication of MCOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent application of MCOFs as outstanding adsorbents for the removal of contaminants including toxic metal ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and other organic pollutants is discussed. Moreover, in-depth discussions regarding the structural parameters affecting the practical potential of MCOFs are highlighted in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of MCOFs in this field are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application.

From Supramolecular Organic Cages to Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Iodine Adsorption Capability by Fully Exposed Nitrogen-Rich Sites

In order to overcome the limitations of supramolecular organic cages for their incomplete accessibility of active sites in the solid state and uneasy recyclability in liquid solution, herein a nitrogen-rich organic cage is rationally linked into framework systems and four isoreticular covalent organic frameworks (COFs), that is, Cage-TFB-COF, Cage-NTBA-COF, Cage-TFPB-COF, and Cage-TFPT-COF, are successfully synthesized. Structure determination reveals that they are all high-quality crystalline materials derived from the eclipsed packing of related isoreticular two-dimensional frameworks. Since the nitrogen-rich sites usually have a high affinity toward iodine species, iodine adsorption investigations are carried out and the results show that all of them display an enhancement in iodine adsorption capacities. Especially, Cage-NTBA-COF exhibits an iodine adsorption capacity of 304 wt%, 14-fold higher than the solid sample packed from the cage itself. The strong interactions between the nitrogen-rich sites and the adsorbed iodine species are revealed by spectral analyses. This work demonstrates that, utilizing the reticular chemistry strategy to extend the close-packed supramolecular organic cages into crystalline porous framework solids, their inherent properties can be greatly exploited for targeted applications.

Large-Scale Synthesis of Covalent Organic Frameworks: Challenges and Opportunities

Connecting organic building blocks by covalent bonds to design porous crystalline networks has led to covalent organic frameworks (COFs), consequently transferring the flexibility of dynamic linkages from discrete architectures to extended structures. By virtue of the library of organic building blocks and the diversity of dynamic linkages and topologies, COFs have emerged as a novel field of organic materials that propose a platform for tailor-made complex structural design. Progress over the past two decades in the design, synthesis, and functional exploration of COFs in diverse applications successively established these frameworks in materials chemistry. The large-scale synthesis of COFs with uniform structures and properties is of profound importance for commercialization and industrial applications; however, this is in its infancy at present. An innovative designing and synthetic approaches have paved novel ways to address future hurdles. This review article highlights the fundamental of COFs, including designing principles, coupling reactions, topologies, structural diversity, synthetic strategies, characterization, growth mechanism, and activation aspects of COFs. Finally, the major challenges and future trends for large-scale COF fabrication are outlined.

Design and Synthesis of Porous Organic Polymers: Promising Catalysts for Lignocellulose Conversion to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Derivates

In the face of the current energy and environmental problems, the full use of biomass resources instead of fossil energy to produce a series of high-value chemicals has great application prospects. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which can be synthesized from lignocellulose as a raw material, is an important biological platform molecule. Its preparation and the catalytic oxidation of subsequent products have important research significance and practical value. In the actual production process, porous organic polymer (POP) catalysts are highly suitable for biomass catalytic conversion due to their high efficiency, low cost, good designability, and environmentally friendly features. Here, we briefly describe the application of various types of POPs (including COFs, PAFs, HCPs, and CMPs) in the preparation and catalytic conversion of HMF from lignocellulosic biomass and analyze the influence of the structural properties of catalysts on the catalytic performance. Finally, we summarize some challenges that POPs catalysts face in biomass catalytic conversion and prospect the important research directions in the future. This review provides valuable references for the efficient conversion of biomass resources into high-value chemicals in practical applications.

Recent Advances in Confining Polyoxometalates and the Applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely used in catalysis, energy storage, biomedicine, and other research fields due to their unique acidity, photothermal, and redox features. However, the leaching and agglomeration problems of POMs greatly limit their practical applications. Confining POMs in a host material is an efficient tool to address the above-mentioned issues. POM@host materials have received extensive attention in recent years. They not only inherent characteristics of POMs and host, but also play a significant synergistic effect from each component. This review focuses on the recent advances in the development and applications of POM@host materials. Different types of host materials are elaborated in detail, including tubular, layered, and porous materials. Variations in the structures and properties of POMs and hosts before and after confinement are highlighted as well. In addition, an overview of applications for the representative POM@host materials in electrochemical, catalytic, and biological fields is provided. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of POM@host composites are discussed.

Sweeteners in food samples: An update on pretreatment and analysis techniques since 2015

Sweeteners play an irreplaceable role in daily life and have been found in multitudinous food products. However, excessive or unreasonable intake of sweeteners as food additives brings about untoward problems due to the accumulation in the human body. Therefore, a comprehensive review of different sweeteners' pretreatment and determination methods is urgently needed. In this review, we comprehensively reviewed the progress of different pretreatment and detection methods for sweeteners in various food, focusing on the latest development since 2015. Current state-of-the-art technologies, such as headspace single-drop microextraction, ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction, solid-phase microextraction, two-dimensional liquid chromatography, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, are thoroughly discussed. The advantages, disadvantages, critical comments, and future perspectives are also proposed. This review is expected to provide rewarding insights into the future development and broad application of pretreatment and detection methods for sweeteners in different food samples.

Recovery of homogeneous photocatalysts by covalent organic framework membranes

Transition metal-based homogeneous photocatalysts offer a wealth of opportunities for organic synthesis. The most versatile ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) polypyridyl complexes, however, are among the rarest metal complexes. Moreover, immobilizing these precious catalysts for recycling is challenging as their opacity may obstruct light transmission. Recovery of homogeneous catalysts by conventional polymeric membranes is promising but limited, as the modulation of their pore structure and tolerance of polar organic solvents are challenging. Here, we report the effective recovery of homogeneous photocatalysts using covalent organic framework (COF) membranes. An array of COF membranes with tunable pore sizes and superior organic solvent resistance were prepared. Ruthenium and iridium photoredox catalysts were recycled for 10 cycles in various types of photochemical reactions, constantly achieving high catalytical performance, high recovery rates, and high permeance. We successfully recovered the photocatalysts at gram-scale. Furthermore, we demonstrated a cascade isolation of an iridium photocatalyst and purification of a small organic molecule product with COF membranes possessing different pore sizes. Our results indicate an intriguing potential to shift the paradigm of the pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis campaign.

Covalent organic framework: A state-of-the-art review of electrochemical sensing applications

Covalent organic framework (COF), a kind of porous polymer with crystalline properties, is a periodic porous framework material with precise regulation at atomic level, which can be formed by the orderly connection of pre-designed organic construction units through covalent bonds. Compared with metal-organic frameworks, COFs exhibit unique performance, including tailor-made functions, stronger load ability, structural diversity, ordered porosity, intrinsic stability and excellent adsorption features, are more conducive to the expansion of electrochemical sensing applications and the universality of applications. In addition, COFs can accurately integrate organic structural units with atomic precision into ordered structures, so that the structural diversity and application of COFs can be greatly enriched by designing new construction units and adopting reasonable functional strategies. In this review, we mainly summarized state-of-the-art recent advances of the classification and synthesis strategy of COFs, the design of functionalized COF for electrochemical sensors and COFs-based electrochemical sensing. Then, an overview of the considerable recent advances made in applying outstanding COFs to establish electrochemical sensing platform, including electrochemical sensor based on voltammetry, amperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemiluminescence, photoelectrochemical sensor and others. Finally, we discussed the positive outlooks, critical challenges and bright directions of COFs-based electrochemical sensing in the field of disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, food safety, drug analysis, etc.

(Na,Li)3(Cl,OH)[Cu3OAl(PO4)3]: a first salt-inclusion aluminophosphate oxocuprate with a new type of crystal structure

The synthesis and characterization of a first salt-inclusion aluminophosphate oxocuprate, (Na,Li)₃(Cl,OH)[Cu₃OAl(PO₄)₃], obtained as single crystals, is reported. A novel phase, with a strongly pseudo-orthorhombic structure, is described as a monoclinic crystal structure established by the study of a pseudomerohedric microtwin. It was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, microprobe analysis and low-temperature X-ray diffraction. The composite crystal structure represents an original framework assembled from Cu-centered polyhedra, AlO₆ octahedra and PO₄ tetrahedra with channels, which incorporate the Na/Li salt component [(Na,Li)₃(Cl,OH)]²⁺ that ensures electroneutrality of the compound. Layers of strongly corrugated chains of Cu-centered octahedra with shared edges and linked by PO₄ tetrahedra are shown to be topologically identical with the layers also built from Cu-centered polyhedra and AsO₄/VO₄ tetrahedra forming the crystal structure of a fumarolic mineral aleutite, (M_0.5Cl)[Cu₅O₂(AsO₄)(VO₄)] [Siidra et al. (2019). MinMag, 83, 847-853]. `Sawtooth chains' and pairs of Cu-centered octahedra inherent in the title structure may be of interest in solid-state physics, engaging studies in the field of low-dimensional and frustrated magnetism.

State-of-the-Art of Polymer/Fullerene C60 Nanocomposite Membranes for Water Treatment: Conceptions, Structural Diversity and Topographies

To secure existing water resources is one of the imposing challenges to attain sustainability and ecofriendly world. Subsequently, several advanced technologies have been developed for water treatment. The most successful methodology considered so far is the development of water filtration membranes for desalination, ion permeation, and microbes handling. Various types of membranes have been industrialized including nanofiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultrafiltration membranes. Among polymeric nanocomposites, nanocarbon (fullerene, graphene, and carbon nanotubes)-reinforced nanomaterials have gained research attention owing to notable properties/applications. Here, fullerene has gained important stance amid carbonaceous nanofillers due to zero dimensionality, high surface areas, and exceptional physical properties such as optical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and other characteristics. Accordingly, a very important application of polymer/fullerene C₆₀ nanocomposites has been observed in the membrane sector. This review is basically focused on talented applications of polymer/fullerene nanocomposite membranes in water treatment. The polymer/fullerene nanostructures bring about numerous revolutions in the field of high-performance membranes because of better permeation, water flux, selectivity, and separation performance. The purpose of this pioneering review is to highlight and summarize current advances in the field of water purification/treatment using polymer and fullerene-based nanocomposite membranes. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of fullerene embedded into a variety of polymer membranes (Nafion, polysulfone, polyamide, polystyrene, etc.) and effects on the enhanced properties and performance of the resulting water treatment membranes. Polymer/fullerene nanocomposite membranes have been developed using solution casting, phase inversion, electrospinning, solid phase synthesis, and other facile methods. The structural diversity of polymer/fullerene nanocomposites facilitates membrane separation processes, especially for valuable or toxic metal ions, salts, and microorganisms. Current challenges and opportunities for future research have also been discussed. Future research on these innovative membrane materials may overwhelm design and performance-related challenging factors.

A Novel Nanocomposite Based on Triazine Based Covalent Organic Polymer Blended with Porous g-C3N4 for Photo Catalytic Dye Degradation of Rose Bengal and Fast Green

Metal free visible light active photocatalysts of covalent organic polymers (COPs) and polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) are interesting porous catalysts that have enormous potential for application in organic pollutant degradation. Imine condensation for COPs, and thermal condensation for g-C₃N₄ were used to produce the catalysts. FT-IR, Raman, NMR, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy studies were used to investigate the structural, optical, and morphological features of the metal free catalysts. We have constructed COPs with a π-electron deficient (Lewis acidic) triazine core and π -electron rich (Lewis basic) naphthalene and anthraquinone rings coupled by -O and -N donors in this study. Furthermore, the prepared Bulk-g-C₃N₄ (B-GCN) was converted to porous g-C₃N₄ (P-GCN) using a chemical oxidation process, and the generated P-GCN was efficiently mixed with the COP to create a novel nanocomposite for photocatalytic application. Using the anthraquinone-based COP and P-GCN (1:1 ratio, PA-GCN) catalyst, the highest photodegradation efficiencies for the polymeric graphitic carbon nitride of 88.2% and 82.3% were achieved using the Fast green (FG) and Rose bengal (RB) dyes, respectively. The rate constant values of 0.032 and 0.024/min were determined for FG and RB degradation, respectively. Higher activity may be related to the incorporation of COP and PA-GCN, which act significantly well in higher visible light absorption, have superior reactive oxygen generation (ROS), and demonstrate an excellent pollutant-catalyst interaction.

A Novel Paper-Based Electrochemical Biosensor Based on N,O-Rich Covalent Organic Frameworks for Carbaryl Detection

A new N,O-rich covalent organic framework (COFDHNDA-BTH) was synthesized by an amine-aldehyde condensation reaction between 2,6-dialdehyde-1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHNDA) and 1,3,5-phenyltriformylhydrazine (BTH) for carbaryl detection. The free NH, OH, and C=O groups of COFDHNDA-BTH not only covalently couples with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) into the pores of COFDHNDA-BTH, but also greatly improves the catalytic activity of AChE in the constrained environment of COFDHNDA-BTH's pore. Under the catalysis of AChE, the acetylthiocholine (ATCl) was decomposed into positively charged thiocholine (TCl), which was captured on the COFDHNDA-BTH modified electrode. The positive charges of TCl can attract anionic probe [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- on the COFDHNDA-BTH-modified electrode to show a good oxidation peak at 0.25 V (versus a saturated calomel electrode). The carbaryl detection can inhibit the activity of AChE, resulting in the decrease in the oxidation peak. Therefore, a turn-off electrochemical carbaryl biosensor based on a flexible carbon paper electrode loaded with COFDHNDA-BTH and AChE was constructed using the oxidation peak of an anionic probe [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- as the detection signal. The detection limit was 0.16 μM (S/N = 3), and the linear range was 0.48~35.0 μM. The sensor has good selectivity, repeatability, and stability, and has a good application prospect in pesticide detection.

Recent Advances in Membrane-Based Biogas and Biohydrogen Upgrading

Biogas and biohydrogen, due to their renewable nature and zero carbon footprint, are considered two of the gaseous biofuels that will replace conventional fossil fuels. Biogas from anaerobic digestion must be purified and converted into high-quality biomethane prior to use as a vehicle fuel or injection into natural gas networks. Likewise, the enrichment of biohydrogen from dark fermentation requires the removal of CO2, which is the main pollutant of this new gaseous biofuel. Currently, the removal of CO2 from both biogas and biohydrogen is carried out by means of physical/chemical technologies, which exhibit high operating costs and corrosion problems. Biological technologies for CO2 removal from biogas, such as photosynthetic enrichment and hydrogenotrophic enrichment, are still in an experimental development phase. In this context, membrane separation has emerged as the only physical/chemical technology with the potential to improve the performance of CO2 separation from both biogas and biohydrogen, and to reduce investment and operating costs, as a result of the recent advances in the field of nanotechnology and materials science. This review will focus on the fundamentals, potential and limitations of CO2 and H2 membrane separation technologies. The latest advances on membrane materials for biogas and biohydrogen purification will be systematically reviewed.

Photocatalytic Water Splitting Promoted by 2D and 3D Porphyrin Covalent Organic Polymers Synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura Carbon-Carbon Coupling

This work deals with the synthesis of metal-free and porphyrin-based covalent organic polymers (COPs) by the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling carbon-carbon bond forming reaction to study the photocatalytic overall water splitting performance. Apart from using 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis-(4-bromophenyl)porphyrin, we have chosen different cross-linker monomers to induce 2-dimensional (2D) or 3-dimensional (3D) and different rigidity in their resulting polymeric molecular structure. The synthesised COPs were extensively characterised to reveal that the dimensionality and flexibility of the molecular structure play an intense role in the physical, photochemical, and electronic properties of the polymers. Photoinduced excited state of the COPs was evaluated by nanosecond time-resolved laser transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) by analysing excited state kinetics and quenching experiments, photocurrent density measurements and photocatalytic deposition of Ru³⁺ to RuO_2, and photocatalysis. In summary, TAS experiments demonstrated that the transient excited state of these polymers has two decay kinetics and exhibit strong interaction with water molecules. Moreover, photocurrent and photocatalytic deposition experiments proved that charges are photoinduced and are found across the COP molecular network, but more important charges can migrate from the surface of the COP to the medium. Among the various COPs tested, COP-3 that has a flexible and 3D molecular structure reached the best photocatalytic performances, achieving a photocatalytic yield of 0.4 mmol H₂ × g_COP-3^-1 after 3 h irradiation.

Metalated covalent organic frameworks: from synthetic strategies to diverse applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of organic crystalline porous materials discovered in the early 21st century that have become an attractive class of emerging materials due to their high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. However, many chemical and physical properties strongly depend on the presence of metal ions in materials for advanced applications, but metal-free COFs do not have these properties and are therefore excluded from such applications. Metalated COFs formed by combining COFs with metal ions, while retaining the advantages of COFs, have additional intriguing properties and applications, and have attracted considerable attention over the past decade. This review presents all aspects of metalated COFs, from synthetic strategies to various applications, in the hope of promoting the continued development of this young field.

A facile imine-linked covalent organic framework doped with a carbon dot composite for the detection and removal of Hg2+ in surface water

Hg2+ is one of the most toxic chemical species in the water environment, and thus developing a new fluorescent covalent organic framework for both the detection and removal of Hg2+ is highly desirable. Herein, a fluorescent composite, termed TpPa-1 COF@CDs, was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization method using an imine covalent organic framework as the supporting material and carbon dots as the fluorescent sensor element. The crystallinity, porosity, rich functional receptors (hydroxyl and amino groups), thermal stability and fluorescent properties of TpPa-1 COF@CDs were characterized. The results showed that TpPa-1 COF@CDs exhibited a good detection and removal performance for Hg2+, which was evidenced by its high sensitivity (LOD = 0.75 μg L-1), superior selectivity, large adsorption capacity (235 mg g-1), fast adsorption rate (30 min equilibrium time) and good regeneration (at least five cycles). More importantly, the simple functional monomer, short reaction time and metal-free raw material made TpPa-1 COF@CDs reliable, cost effective and eco-friendly. This research demonstrated the facile construction of a functional covalent organic framework composite for water environmental remediation technologies of metal pollution.

Facile Synthesis of Microporous Ferrocenyl Polymers Photocatalyst for Degradation of Cationic Dye

Microporous organic polymers (MOPs) were prepared by condensation reactions from substituent-group-free carbazole and pyrrole with 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxaldehyde without adding any catalysts. The resultant MOPs were insoluble in common solvent and characterized by FTIR, XPS, TGA and SEM. An N₂ adsorption test showed that the obtained polymers PFcMOP and CFcMOP exhibited Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas of 48 and 105 m² g⁻¹, respectively, and both polymers possessed abundant micropores. The MOPs with a nitrogen and ferrocene unit could be potentially applied in degrading dye with high efficiency.

Azo-Linked Porous Organic Polymers for Selective Carbon Dioxide Capture and Metal Ion Removal

The facile and environmentally friendly synthesis of porous organic polymers with designed polar functionalities decorating the interior frameworks as an excellent adsorbent for selective carbon dioxide capture and metal ion removal is a target worth pursuing for environmental applications. In this regard, two azo-linked porous organic polymers denoted man-Azo-P1 and man-Azo-P2 were synthesized in water by the azo-linking of 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl (benzidine) and 4,4'-methylenedianiline, respectively, with 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene. The resulting polymers showed good BET surface areas of 290 and 78 m² g^-1 for man-Azo-P1 and man-Azo-P2, respectively. Due to the enriched core functionality of the azo (-N=N-) and hydroxyl groups along with the porous frameworks, man-Azo-P1 exhibited a good CO₂ uptake capacity of 32 cm³ g^-1 at 273 K and 1 bar, in addition to the remarkable removal of lead (Pd), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and mercury (Hg) ions. This performance of the synthesized man-Azo-P1 and man-Azo-P2 in the dual application of CO₂ capture and heavy metal ion removal highlights the unique properties of azo-linked POPs as excellent and stable sorbent materials for the current challenging environmental applications.

Fe-based MOFs@Pd@COFs with spatial confinement effect and electron transfer synergy of highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction

Controlling the spatial confinement effect and highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (NPs) can help to improve applicability in catalysis, energy conversion, and separation. However, the nonspatial confinement effect, agglomeration of Pd NPs of catalyst and harsh reaction conditions have become the urgent problems to be solved in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Herein, we report the first application of a new MOFs@COFs by using core with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) NH₂-MIL-101(Fe) and shell with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for loading Pd NPs. The quickly formation of a transition state, the highly dispersed Pd NPs and the advancedly spatial confinement effect were achieved by coupling Fe base synergistic active components, electron-oriented anchoring with controlling pore scale, respectively. Most notably, as a proof-of-concept application, the high catalytic activity of NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)@Pd@COFs(3 + 3) in catalysis is elucidated for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction by the broad scope of the reactants and the preeminent yields of the products, together with excellent stability and recoverability. With this strategy, the mechanism of Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction was verified by examining the catalytic activity. We hope that our approach can further facilitate the study of the design and use of functional MOFs@Pd@COFs materials.

Gas Permeability, Fractional Free Volume and Molecular Kinetic Diameters: The Effect of Thermal Rearrangement on ortho-hydroxy Polyamide Membranes Loaded with a Porous Polymer Network

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) consisting of an ortho-hydroxy polyamide (HPA) matrix, and variable loads of a porous polymer network (PPN) were thermally treated to induce the transformation of HPA to polybenzoxazole (β-TR-PBO). Two different HPAs were synthesized to be used as a matrix, 6FCl-APAF and tBTpCl-APAF, while the PPN used as a filler was prepared by reacting triptycene and trifluoroacetophenone. The permeability of He, H2, N2, O2, CH4 and CO2 gases through these MMMs are analyzed as a function of the fraction of free volume (FFV) of the membrane and the kinetic diameter of the gas, allowing for the evaluation of the free volume. Thermal rearrangement entails an increase in the FFV. Both before and after thermal rearrangement, the free volume increases with the PPN content very similarly for both polymeric matrices. It is shown that there is a portion of free volume that is inaccessible to permeation (occluded volume), probably due to it being trapped within the filler. In fact, permeability and selectivity change below what could be expected according to densities, when the fraction of occluded volume increases. A higher filler load increases the percentage of inaccessible or trapped free volume, probably due to the increasing agglomeration of the filler. On the other hand, the phenomenon is slightly affected by thermal rearrangement. The fraction of trapped free volume seems to be lower for membranes in which the tBTpCl-APAF is used as a matrix than for those with a 6FCl-APAF matrix, possibly because tBTpCl-APAF could approach the PPN better. The application of an effective medium theory for permeability allowed us to extrapolate for a 100% filler, giving the same value for both thermally rearranged and non-rearranged MMMs. The pure filler could also be extrapolated by assuming the same tendency as in the Robeson's plots for MMMs with low filler content.

A novel aptamer RRS assay platform for ultratrace melamine based on COF-loaded Pd nanocluster catalytic amplification

Two COFs of BzBD and BzBD loaded Pd nanoclusters (BzBD_Pd) were prepared using 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde (Bz), benzidine (BD) and CO reducing agent, and were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and other techniques. BzBD_Pd can strongly catalyze the new and stable Au@NiP nanoreaction that exhibit a strong resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) peak at 538 nm and a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption peak at 395 nm, and the sensitive and facile RRS technique was used to study the indicator reaction. Combining the nanocatalytic amplification reaction with specific aptamer (Apt) of some target molecules such as melamine (ML), urea (UR) and bisphenol A (BPA), a simple, sensitive and selective Apt RRS assay platform was established. The linear range of the RRS detection platform for melamine is 0.0025-0.04 nmol/L, and the detection limit (DL) is 1.96 × 10^-4 nmol/L. In addition, ML in real sample was analyzed, the stability of BzBD, BzBD_Pd, PdNPs and the catalytic mechanism of COF_Pd were also considered.

Functional Nanoparticles with Magnetic 3D Covalent Organic Framework for the Specific Recognition and Separation of Bovine Serum Albumin

Glutathione functionalized magnetic 3D covalent organic frameworks combined with molecularly imprinted polymer (magnetic 3D COF–GSH MIPs) were developed for the selective recognition and separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Ultrasonication was used to prepare magnetic 3D COFs with high porosity (~1 nm) and a large surface area (373 m² g⁻¹). The magnetic 3D COF–GSH MIP nanoparticles had an imprinting factor of 4.79, absorption capacity of 429 mg g⁻¹, magnetic susceptibility of 32 emu g⁻¹, and five adsorption–desorption cycles of stability. The proposed method has the advantages of a shorter equilibrium absorption time (1.5 h), higher magnetic susceptibility (32 emu g⁻¹), and larger imprinting factor (4.79) compared with those reported from other studies. The magnetic 3D COF–GSH MIPs used with BSA had selectivity factors of 3.68, 2.76, and 3.30 for lysozyme, ovalbumin, and cytochrome C, respectively. The successful recognition and separation of BSA in a real sample analysis verified the capability of the magnetic 3D COF–GSH MIP nanoparticles.

Advances and challenges in the development of nanosheet membranes

The development of highly efficient separation membranes utilizing emerging materials with controllable pore size and minimized thickness could greatly enhance the broad applications of membrane-based technologies. Having this perspective, many studies on the incorporation of nanosheets in membrane fabrication have been conducted, and strong interest in this area has grown over the past decade. This article reviews the development of nanosheet membranes focusing on two-dimensional materials as a continuous phase, due to their promising properties, such as atomic or nanoscale thickness and large lateral dimensions, to achieve improved performance compared to their discontinuous counterparts. Material characteristics and strategies to process nanosheet materials into separation membranes are reviewed, followed by discussions on the membrane performances in diverse applications. The review concludes with a discussion of remaining challenges and future outlook for nanosheet membrane technologies.

Preparation of Recyclable and Versatile Porous Poly(aryl thioether)s by Reversible Pd-Catalyzed C-S/C-S Metathesis

Porous organic materials (polymers and COFs) have shown a number of promising properties; however, the lability of their linkages often limits their robustness and can hamper downstream industrial application. Inspired by the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal resistance of the 1D polymer poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), we have designed a new family of porous poly(aryl thioether)s, synthesized via a mild Pd-catalyzed C–S/C–S metathesis-based method, that merges the attractive features common to porous polymers and PPS in a single material. In addition, the method is highly modular, allowing to easily introduce application-oriented functionalities in the materials for a series of environmentally relevant applications including metal capture, metal sensing, and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, despite their extreme chemical resistance, the polymers can be easily recycled to recover the original monomers, offering an attractive perspective for their sustainable use. In a broader context, these results clearly demonstrate the untapped potential of emerging single-bond metathesis reactions in the preparation of new, recyclable materials.

Thiophene-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis, Photophysics and Light-Driven Applications

Porous crystalline materials, such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have emerged as some of the most important materials over the last two decades due to their excellent physicochemical properties such as their large surface area and permanent, accessible porosity. On the other hand, thiophene derivatives are common versatile scaffolds in organic chemistry. Their outstanding electrical properties have boosted their use in different light-driven applications (photocatalysis, organic thin film transistors, photoelectrodes, organic photovoltaics, etc.), attracting much attention in the research community. Despite the great potential of both systems, porous COF materials based on thiophene monomers are scarce due to the inappropriate angle provided by the latter, which hinders its use as the building block of the former. To circumvent this drawback, researchers have engineered a number of thiophene derivatives that can form part of the COFs structure, while keeping their intrinsic properties. Hence, in the present minireview, we will disclose some of the most relevant thiophene-based COFs, highlighting their basic components (building units), spectroscopic properties and potential light-driven applications.

Recent advances in dual-filler mixed matrix membranes

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been widely developed as an attractive solution to overcome the drawbacks found in most polymer membranes, such as permeability-selectivity trade-off and low physicochemical stability. Numerous fillers based on inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials with various structures including porous or nonporous, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional, have been used. Demanded to further improve the characteristics and performances of the MMMs, the use of dual-filler instead of a single filler has then been proposed, from which multiple effects could be obtained. This article aims to review the recent development of MMMs with dual filler and discuss their performances in diverse potential applications. Challenges in this emerging field and outlook for future research are finally provided.

Combined GCMC, MD, and DFT Approach for Unlocking the Performances of COFs for Methane Purification

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for gas storage and separation; however, the potential of COFs for separation of CH₄ from industrially relevant gases such as H₂, N₂, and C₂H₆ is yet to be investigated. In this work, we followed a multiscale computational approach to unlock both the adsorption- and membrane-based CH₄/H₂, CH₄/N₂, and C₂H₆/CH₄ separation potentials of 572 COFs by combining grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adsorbent performance evaluation metrics of COFs, adsorption selectivity, working capacity, regenerability, and adsorbent performance score were calculated for separation of equimolar CH₄/H₂, CH₄/N₂, and C₂H₆/CH₄ mixtures at vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) and pressure swing adsorption (PSA) conditions to identify the best-performing COFs for each mixture. Results showed that COFs could achieve selectivities of 2-85, 1-7, and 2-23 for PSA-based CH₄/H₂, CH₄/N₂, and C₂H₆/CH₄ separations, respectively, outperforming conventional adsorbents such as zeolites and activated carbons for each mixture. Structure-performance relations revealed that COFs with pore sizes <10 Å are promising adsorbents for all mixtures. We identified the gas adsorption sites in the three top-performing COFs commonly identified for each mixture by DFT calculations and computed the binding strength of gases, which were found to be on the order of C₂H₆ > CH₄ > N₂ > H₂, supporting the GCMC results. Nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) indexes of aromaticity for adsorption sites were calculated, and the results revealed that the degree of linker aromaticity could be a measure for the selection or design of highly alkane-selective COF adsorbents over N₂ and H₂. Finally, COF membranes were shown to achieve high H₂ permeabilities, 4.57 × 10³ -1.25 × 10⁶ Barrer, and decent membrane selectivities, as high as 4.3, outperforming polymeric and MOF-based membranes for separation of H₂ from CH₄.
