A fantastic two-dimensional MoS2 material based on the inert basal planes activation: Electronic structure, synthesis strategies, catalytic active sites, catalytic and electronics properties

Identifying the Active Sites in MoSi2@MoO3 Heterojunctions for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Developing Two-dimensional (2D) Mo-based heterogeneous nanomaterials is of great significance for energy conversion, especially in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), however, it remains a challenge to identify the active sites at the interface due to the structure complexity. Herein, the real active sites are systematically explored during the HER process in varied Mo-based 2D materials by theoretical computational and magnetron sputtering approaches first to filtrate the candidates, then successfully combined the MoSi2 and MoO3 together through Oxygen doping to construct heterojunctions. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between the MoSi2 and MoO3, the obtained MoSi2@MoO3 exhibits an unprecedented overpotential of 72 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations uncover the different Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*) values achieved at the interfaces with different sites as adsorption sites. The results can facilitate the optimization of heterojunction electrocatalyst design principles for the Mo-based 2D materials.

Interfacing Ag2S Nanoparticles and MoS2 Nanosheets on Polypyrrole Nanotubes with Enhanced Catalytic Performance

The tubular architecture with multiple components can bring synergistic effects to improve the enzyme-like activity of molybdenum-based nanomaterials. Here, a facile polypyrrole (PPy)-protected hydrothermal sulfidation process was implemented to engineer MoS2/Ag2S heterointerfaces encapsulated in one-dimensional (1D) PPy nanotubes with MoO3@Ag nanorods as the self-sacrificing precursor. Notably, the sulfidation treatment led to the generation of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) and Ag2S nanoparticles (NPs) and the creation of a tubular structure with a "kill three birds with one stone" role. The Ag2S/MoS2@PPy nanotubes showed the synergistic combined effects of Ag2S NPs, MoS2 NSs, and the 1D tube-like nanostructure. Based on the synergistic effects from these multiple components and the tubular structure, Ag2S/MoS2@PPy nanocomposites were used as a colorimetric sensing platform for detecting H2O2. Moreover, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) revealed excellent catalytic activity in the presence of NaBH4 and Ag2S/MoS2@PPy nanocomposites. This work highlights the effects of MoS2/Ag2S heterointerfaces and the hierarchical tubular structure in catalysis, thereby providing a new avenue for reducing 4-NP and the enzyme-like catalytic field.

Water adsorption on MoS2 under realistic atmosphere conditions and impacts on tribology

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a 2D material widely used as a dry lubricant. However, exposure to water and oxygen is known to reduce its effectiveness, and therefore an understanding of the uptake of water is important information for mitigating these effects. Here we use grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to rigorously study water adsorption on MoS2 surfaces and edges with different concentrations of defects under realistic atmospheric conditions (i.e. various temperatures and humidity levels). We find that the amount of water adsorbed depends strongly on the number of defects. Simulations indicate that defect sites are generally saturated with water even at low ppm levels of humidity. Water binds strongly to S vacancies on interlamellar surfaces, but generally only one water molecule can fit on each of these sites. Defects on surfaces or edges of lamellae also strongly attract water molecules that then nucleate small clusters of water bonded via hydrogen bonding. We demonstrate that water preferentially binds to surface defects, but once those are saturated at a critical humidity level of about 500-1000 ppm water, water binds to edge sites where it negatively impacts the tribological performance of MoS2.

Co, Fe Dual-Doped MoS2 Nanosheets on Polypyrrole Microtubes as Effective Peroxidase Mimics for Glutathione Sensing

Heteroatom doping is considered an effective way to enhance the catalytic activity of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs). In the paper, dual-metal doping was proposed to incorporate Fe and Co into hierarchical MoS2 ultrathin NSs, which grew directly on polypyrrole microtubes (Fe, Co-MoS2@PPy), for the enhanced enzyme-like catalytic reaction. The particular hollow tubular structure realized effective electron transfer. The doped Fe and Co tuned the electronic architecture of the MoS2 NSs to enhance the enzyme-like catalytic activity. The abundant exposed void spaces facilitated ion diffusion/penetration between the PPy interlayer and Fe-Co doped MoS2 shell, leading to heterostructured synergistic effects. Therefore, the synthesized Fe and Co-MoS2@PPy composites showed remarkable catalytic activity. The high catalytic efficiency of Fe and Co-MoS2@PPy was confirmed with the reaction of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2O2 for visible detection. The blue color disappeared after adding glutathione (GSH). Thus, this procedure was used as a convenient way to detect GSH with a detection limit of 0.76 μM. The dual-metal-doped strategy was confirmed to improve the performance of MoS2 nanocomposites and could be used as a promising matrix for other applications, such as electrochemical energy conversion, medical diagnosis, and others.

The Promise of Metal-Doped Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as Antimicrobial Agent

Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the pressing global public health concerns and projections indicate a potential 10 million fatalities by the year 2050. The decreasing effectiveness of commercially available antibiotics due to the drug resistance phenomenon has spurred research efforts to develop potent and safe antimicrobial agents. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), especially when doped with metals, have emerged as a promising avenue for combating microbial infections. Like IONPs, the antimicrobial activities of doped-IONPs are also linked to their surface charge, size, and shape. Doping metals on nanoparticles can alter the size and magnetic properties by reducing the energy band gap and combining electronic charges with spins. Furthermore, smaller metal-doped nanoparticles tend to exhibit enhanced antimicrobial activity due to their higher surface-to-volume ratio, facilitating greater interaction with bacterial cells. Moreover, metal doping can also lead to increased charge density in magnetic nanoparticles and thereby elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. These ROS play a vital role to disrupt bacterial cell membrane, proteins, or nucleic acids. In this review, we compared the antimicrobial activities of different doped-IONPs, elucidated their mechanism(s), and put forth opinions for improved biocompatibility.

Molybdenum disulfide, exfoliation methods and applications to photocatalysis: a review

This review provides a deep analysis of the mechanical and optoelectronic characteristics of MoS2. It offers a comprehensive assessment of diverse exfoliation methods, encompassing chemical, liquid-phase, mechanical, and microwave-driven techniques. The review also explores MoS2's versatile applications across various domains and meticulously examines its significance as a photocatalyst. Notably, it highlights key factors influencing the photocatalytic process. Indeed, the enhanced visible light responsiveness of materials like MoS2 holds immense potential across a wide range of applications. MoS2's remarkable photocatalytic response to visible light, coupled with its notable stability, opens up numerous possibilities in various fields. This unique combination makes MoS2 a promising candidate for applications that require efficient and stable photocatalytic processes, such as environmental remediation, water purification, and energy generation. Its attributes contribute significantly to addressing contemporary challenges and advancing sustainable technologies.

Co-assembled MoS2-TiO2 Inverse Opal Photocatalysts for Visible Light-Activated Pharmaceutical Photodegradation

Heterostructured photocatalytic materials in the form of photonic crystals have been attracting attention for their unique light harvesting ability that can be ideally combined with judicious compositional modifications toward the development of visible light-activated (VLA) photonic catalysts, though practical environmental applications, such as the degradation of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants, have been rarely reported. Herein, heterostructured MoS2-TiO2 inverse opal films are introduced as highly active immobilized photocatalysts for the VLA degradation of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin broad-spectrum antibiotics as well as salicylic acid. A single-step co-assembly method was implemented for the challenging incorporation of MoS2 nanosheets into the nanocrystalline inverse opal walls. Compositional tuning and photonic band gap engineering of the MoS2-TiO2 photonic films showed that integration of low amounts of MoS2 nanosheets in the inverse opal framework maintains intact the periodic macropore structure and enhances the available surface area, resulting in efficient VLA antibiotic degradation far beyond the performance of benchmark TiO2 films. The combination of broadband MoS2 visible light absorption and photonic-assisted light trapping together with the enhanced charge separation that enables the generation of reactive oxygen species via firm interfacial coupling between MoS2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles is concluded as a competent approach for pharmaceutical abatement in water bodies.

Algae extract delamination of molybdenum disulfide and surface modification with glycidyl methacrylate and polyaniline for the elimination of metal ions from wastewater

A special type of two-dimensional (2D) material based conducting polymer was constructed by green synthesis and in-situ polymerization techniques. The 2D Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂) were first synthesized with the combination of, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate dissolved in 20 mL algae extract under stirring. After stirring for about 2 h, and then finally sulfurization was initiated using sulfur powder in 20 mL of sulfuric solution and stirred for 8 h. The resulting black precipitates of MoS₂ were collected by centrifugation at 5000 rpm. Moreover, the prepared MoS₂ was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and form the MoS₂@PGMA. Further, the MoS₂@PGMA is combined with polyaniline (PANI) to form conducting polymer grafted thin film nanosheets named MoS₂@PGMA/PANI with a thickness in micrometer size through grafting method. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and EDX techniques. To check the performance of materials the adsorption study was performed. Moreover, the adsorption study toward Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ showed a tremendous results and the maximum adsorption was 307.7 mg/g and 214.7 mg/g respectively. In addition, the pseudo-first and second order models as well as the adsorption isotherm were investigated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results were best fitted with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models. The regeneration study was also conducted and MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets can be easily recycled and restored after five successful recycling. The established methodology for preparing the 2D materials and conducting polymer based MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets is expected to be applicable for other multiple applications.

Two-dimensional metal-phase layered molybdenum disulfide for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The two-dimensional (2D) basal plane of metal-phase molybdenum disulphide (1T-MoS₂) provides a large area of active sites to significantly reduce the overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but the long preparation period limits its industrial application. Here, 1T-MoS₂ catalysts derived from molybdenum blue solution (MBS) were prepared in one step using a rapid high-pressure microwave (MW-MoS₂) strategy. This method eliminated the thermodynamic process with a long time required for Mo-O trioxide bond breakage and reduction (Mo^VI → Mo^IV) of the conventional hydrothermal method. Additionally, the introduction of heteroatomic oxygen atoms effectively reduced the build-up of MW-MoS₂ and improved the monolayer/few-layer state and stability. Impressively, MW-MoS₂ has outstanding electrocatalytic performance, with a low overpotential (62 mV) at 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope (42 mV dec^-1). This provides a simple strategy for the rapid preparation of a 2D sulphide HER catalyst with performance close to that of commercial Pt/C.

Highly Selective Room Temperature Detection of NH3 and NOx Using Oxygen-Deficient W18O49-Supported WS2 Heterojunctions

In this paper, we reported the controlled synthesis of tungsten disulfide/reduced tungsten oxide (WS₂/W₁₈O₄₉) heterojunctions for highly efficient room temperature NO_x and ammonia (NH₃) sensors. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the formation of the oxygen-deficient W₁₈O₄₉ phase along with WS₂. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy displayed the formation of WS₂ flakes over W₁₈O₄₉ nanorods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of tungsten in W⁴⁺, W⁵⁺, and W⁶⁺ oxidation states corresponding to WS₂ and W₁₈O₄₉, respectively. The WS₂/W₁₈O₄₉ heterojunction sensor exhibited sub-ppm level sensitivity to NO_x and NH₃ at room temperature. The heterojunction sensor detected 0.6 ppm NO_x and 0.5 ppm NH₃, with a corresponding response of 7.1 and 3.8%, respectively. The limit of detection of the sensor was calculated to be 0.05 and 0.17 ppm for NH₃ and NO_x, respectively. The cyclic stability test showed that the sensor exhibited high stability even after 24 cycles for the detection of NH₃ and 14 cycles for NO_x. Compared to pristine WO₃ and WS₂, the WS₂/W₁₈O₄₉ heterojunction showed high selectivity toward NO_x and NH₃. The results could be useful for the development of room temperature NO_x and NH₃ sensors.

ZIF-8 metal organic framework materials as a superb platform for the removal and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are attracting significant attention for applications including adsorption, chemical sensing, gas separation, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and catalysis. In particular, zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8), which is composed of zinc ions and imidazolate ligands, have been applied in different areas of catalysis due to its outstanding structural and textural properties. It possesses a highly porous structure and chemical and thermal stability under varying reaction conditions. When used alone in the reaction medium, the ZIF-8 particles tend to agglomerate, which inhibits their removal efficiency and selectivity. This results in their mediocre reusability and separation from aqueous conditions. Thus, to overcome these drawbacks, several well-designed ZIF-8 structures have emerged by forming composites and heterostructures and doping. This review focuses on the recent advances on the use of ZIF-8 structures (doping, composites, heterostructures, etc.) in the removal and photodegradation of persistent organic pollutants. We focus on the adsorption and photocatalysis of three main organic pollutants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). Finally, the key challenges, prospects and future directions are outlined to give insights into game-changing breakthroughs in this area.

Recent Progress of Diatomic Catalysts: General Design Fundamentals and Diversified Catalytic Applications

In recent years, some experiments and theoretical work have pointed out that diatomic catalysts not only retain the advantages of monoatomic catalysts, but also introduce a variety of interactions, which exceed the theoretical limit of catalytic performance and can be applied to many catalytic fields. Here, the interaction between adjacent metal atoms in diatomic catalysts is elaborated: synergistic effect, spacing enhancement effect (geometric effect), and electronic effect. With regard to the classification and characterization of various new diatomic catalysts, diatomic catalysts are classified into four categories: heteronuclear/homonuclear, with/without carbon carriers, and their characterization measures are introduced and explained in detail. In the aspect of preparation of diatomic catalysts, the widely used atomic layer deposition method, metal-organic framework derivative method, and simple ball milling method are introduced, with emphasis on the formation mechanism of diatomic catalysts. Finally, the effective control strategies of four diatomic catalysts and the key applications of diatomic catalysts in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, thermal catalysis, and other catalytic fields are given.

Hierarchical microtubes constructed using Fe-doped MoS2 nanosheets for biosensing applications

The structural design of multiple functional components could enhance the synergistic catalytic performance of MoS₂-based composites in enzyme-like catalysis. Herein, one-dimensional (1D) Fe-MoS₂ microtubes were designed to prepare tubular Fe-doped MoS₂ composites with MoO₃ microrods as self-sacrificing precursors. Remarkably, the results indicated that the generated ammonia released from the sulfidation process led to the dissolution of MoO₃ cores and the generation of a tubular structure. The Fe-MoS₂ composites integrated the synergistic effects of Fe-doped MoS₂ nanosheets (NSs) and the 1D tubular structure. Thus, a higher catalytic activity was observed in peroxidase-like catalysis than in other components, such as MoO₃@FeOOH, FeOOH and MoS₂ NSs. The peroxidase-like mechanism originated from the generation of the ˙OH radical. The Fe-MoS₂ microtube-based colorimetric assay was used to detect H₂O₂ with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.51 μM in a linear range from 1.25 to 50 μM. The colorimetric method was simple, selective, and sensitive for glutathione (GSH) detection in the range of 0.25-125 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.12 μM. Thus, we provide a facile synthetic strategy for simultaneously integrating electronic modulation and structural design to develop an efficient MoS₂-based functional catalyst.

Tailoring the Vertical and Planar Growth of 2D WS2 Thin Films Using Pulsed Laser Deposition for Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties

In this study, pulsed laser deposition has been utilized for the controllable synthesis of WS₂ thin films with growth orientation ranging from vertically to horizontally aligned layers, and the effect of growth parameters has been investigated. The growth of thin films on SiO₂ substrates at three different pressures (30, 50, and 70 mTorr) and three different temperatures (400, 500, and 600 °C) has been studied. Detailed characterizations carried out on the as-grown layers clearly show the formation of the 2H-WS₂ phase and its morphological evolution with deposition conditions. Atomic force microscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy have been used to deduce the growth mechanism of the vertical and planar films with different deposition parameters. The samples grown with a combination of lower temperatures and higher pressures exhibit a vertical flake-like growth with a flake thickness of ∼2-5 nm. However, at higher temperatures and lower pressures, the film growth is observed to be rather planar. The gas sensing parameters and the underlying mechanism have been observed to be quite different for vertically and horizontally grown layers. The vertical layers showed a selective response toward NO₂ gas at room temperature (RT) with a limit of detection less than 50 ppb. In comparison, a very subdued and poor gas sensing response was recorded for the planar film at RT. A large specific area and abundance of active edge sites along with the flat basal plane present in the vertically grown layers seem to be responsible for efficient gas sensing toward NO₂.

Recent Progress in Phase Regulation, Functionalization, and Biosensing Applications of Polyphase MoS2

The disulfide compounds of molybdenum (MoS₂ ) are layered van der Waals materials that exhibit a rich array of polymorphic structures. MoS₂ can be roughly divided into semiconductive phase and metallic phase according to the difference in electron filling state of the 4d orbital of Mo atom. The two phases show completely different properties, leading to their diverse applications in biosensors. But to some extent, they compensate for each other. This review first introduces the relationship between phase state and the chemical/physical structures and properties of MoS₂ . Furthermore, the synthetic methods are summarized and the preparation strategies for metastable phases are highlighted. In addition, examples of electronic and chemical property designs of MoS₂ by means of doping and surface modification are outlined. Finally, studies on biosensors based on MoS₂ in recent years are presented and classified, and the roles of MoS₂ with different phases are highlighted. This review offers references for the selection of materials to construct different types of biosensors based on MoS₂ , and provides inspiration for sensing performance enhancement.

Two-Dimensional Material-Based Electrochemical Sensors/Biosensors for Food Safety and Biomolecular Detection

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) exhibited great potential for applications in materials science, energy storage, environmental science, biomedicine, sensors/biosensors, and others due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. In this review, we present recent advances in the fabrication of 2DM-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for applications in food safety and biomolecular detection that are related to human health. For this aim, firstly, we introduced the bottom-up and top-down synthesis methods of various 2DMs, such as graphene, transition metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and several other graphene-like materials, and then we demonstrated the structure and surface chemistry of these 2DMs, which play a crucial role in the functionalization of 2DMs and subsequent composition with other nanoscale building blocks such as nanoparticles, biomolecules, and polymers. Then, the 2DM-based electrochemical sensors/biosensors for the detection of nitrite, heavy metal ions, antibiotics, and pesticides in foods and drinks are introduced. Meanwhile, the 2DM-based sensors for the determination and monitoring of key small molecules that are related to diseases and human health are presented and commented on. We believe that this review will be helpful for promoting 2DMs to construct novel electronic sensors and nanodevices for food safety and health monitoring.

MXenes Quantum Dots for Biomedical Applications: Recent Advances and Challenges

MXenes have aroused widespread interest in the biomedical field owing to their remarkable photo-thermal conversion capabilities combined with large specific surface areas. MXenes quantum dots (MQDs) have been synthesized either by the physical or chemical methods based on MXenes as precursors, which possess smaller size, higher photoluminescence, coupled with low cytotoxicity and many beneficial properties of MXenes, thereby having potential biomedical applications. Given this, this review summarized the synthesis methods, optical, surface and biological properties of MQDs along with their practical applications in the field of biomedicine. Finally, the authors make an outlook towards the synthesis, properties and applications of MQDs in the future biomedicine field.

In Situ Construction of Co-MoS2/Pd Nanosheets on Polypyrrole-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Microtubes as Multifunctional Catalysts with Enhanced Catalytic Performance

The structural design of multiple functional components could integrate synergistic effects to enhance the catalytic performance of MoS₂-based composites for catalytic applications. Herein, one-dimensional (1D) Co-MoS₂/Pd@NCMTs composites were designed to prepare Co-doped MoS₂/Pd nanosheets (NSs) on N-doped carbon microtubes (NCMTs) from tubular polypyrrole (PPy) as multifunctional catalysts. The Co-MoS₂/Pd@NCMTs composites integrated the synergistic effects of Co-doping, a 1D tubular structure, and noble-metal Pd decoration. Thus, a higher catalytic activity was observed in 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction and peroxidase-like catalysis than other components, such as MoS₂, MoS₂@NCMTs, and Co-MoS₂@NCMTs. Remarkably, the results indicated that the dissolution, diffusion, and redistribution led to the dissolution of MoO₃@ZIF-67 cores and generation of Co-doped MoS₂ NSs. Benefiting from the synergistic effect from these components, Co-MoS₂/Pd@NCMTs were considered as a facile colorimetric sensing platform for detecting tannic acid. Moreover, outstanding performance was realized in the reduction of 4-NP with the composites. Thus, we provide a simple synthetic strategy for simultaneously integrating electronic engineering and structural advantages to develop an efficient MoS₂-based multifunctional catalyst.

Fe doped MoS2/polypyrrole microtubes towards efficient peroxidase mimicking and colorimetric sensing application

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets have been found to exhibit intrinsic peroxidase-like activity that could be applied in colorimetric sensing platforms. However, their poor conductivity and few exposed edge sites often lead to poor catalytic activity, impeding the application of MoS₂ nanosheets in enzyme-like catalysis. Here, a novel strategy was developed to selectively deposit Fe-doped MoS₂ nanosheets on polypyrrole microtubes to obtain Fe-MoS₂@PPy microtubes to address these issues. In the synthesized Fe-MoS₂@PPy microtubes, PPy microtubes can not only be used as a conductive support to promote the electron transfer, but also greatly alleviate the aggregations of MoS₂ nanosheets, and thus improve the enzyme-like activity. Meanwhile, additional active sites, formed by Fe doping, also endow the catalyst with excellent activity in enzyme-like catalysis. Notably, in the process of sulfidation, the dissolution, redistribution and diffusion result in the disappearance of MoO₃@FeOOH cores and the formation of Fe doped MoS₂ nanosheets, which significantly facilitate the deposition of Fe-doped MoS₂ nanosheets on PPy microtubes. On the basis of the high peroxidase-like catalytic efficiency of the Fe-MoS₂@PPy microtubes, a simple and convenient colorimetric strategy for the rapid and sensitive detection of L-cysteine has been developed. This strategy introduces both the PPy layer and Fe doping to increase the conductivity and the density of active sites of MoS₂ nanosheets, thus enhancing the catalytic activity and stability. More importantly, Fe-MoS₂@PPy microtubes could be used as a good support for loading other materials such as Au and Ag nanoparticles (NPs), forming ternary Fe-MoS₂/Ag, Au@PPy nanotubes. This work offers an opportunity to develop low-cost and highly active MoS₂-based nanocomposites for promising potential applications in electrochemical energy conversion and medical diagnostics.

Boron nitride quantum dots decorated MIL-100(Fe) for boosting the photo-generated charge separation in photocatalytic refractory antibiotics removal

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for photocatalysis, but only possess moderate activity due to their slow charge transfer and low solar energy conversion. Herein, heterostructures photocatalysts constructed by boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) and MIL-100(Fe) (MNB) were successfully fabricated for overcoming these shortcomings. It was indicated that the composites possessed large surface area, mesoporous structure, and enhanced visible light absorption. The MNB photocatalysts exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under visible light irradiation. Compared with MIL-100(Fe), the photodegradation rate of TC-HCl by MNB-1 was 0.02383 min^-1, which was 5.3 times higher than that of pure MIL-100(Fe). The close contact of MIL-100(Fe) with BNQDs and the synergistic effect between them were the main reasons for the improved photodegradation performance. This study reveals that a rational combination of MIL-100(Fe) and BNQDs can improve photocatalytic activity to enhance molecular oxygen activation. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that quantum dots/MOFs photocatalysts have great potential in environmental remediation.

Controlled 2H/1T phase transition in MoS2 monolayers by a strong interface with M2C MXenes: a computational study

Due to the high conductivity and abundant active sites, the metallic 1T phase of a two-dimensional molybdenum sulfide monolayer (1T-MoS₂) has witnessed a broad range of potential applications in catalysis, and spintronic and phase-switching devices, which, however, are greatly hampered by its poor stability. Thus, the development of particular strategies to realize the phase transition from the stable 2H phase to the metastable 1T phase for MoS₂ nanosheets is highly desirable. Herein, by means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we systematically explored the potential of the interfacial interaction of 2H- and 1T-MoS₂ monolayers with a series of M₂C MXenes (M = Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W) for achieving the 2H/1T phase transformation. Our results revealed that the 2H → 1T transition for MoS₂ monolayers can occur thermodynamically by anchoring on Ti₂C, Zr₂C, or Hf₂C substrates with the extremely strong metal-S interaction, which can be well rationalized by the analysis of the charge transfer, work function, and density of states. Specially, these obtained stable 1T-MoS₂/M₂C hybrid materials exhibit excellent metallic features, outstanding magnetism, and enhanced mechanical properties. Our findings provide a new avenue to tune the phase transformation for MoS₂ monolayers by strong interfacial interactions, which helps to further widen the potential applications of MoS₂ monolayers.

Recent Advances on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) hold great promise for electrochemical energy conversion technologies in view of their unique structural features associated with the layered structure and ultrathin thickness. Because the inert basal plane accounts for the majority of a TMDC's bulk, activation of the basal plane sites is necessary to fully exploit the intrinsic potential of TMDCs. Here, recent advances on TMDCs-based hybrids/composites with greatly enhanced electrochemical activity are reviewed. After a summary of the synthesis of TMDCs with different sizes and morphologies, comprehensive in-plane activation strategies are described in detail, mainly including in-plane-modification-induced phase transformation, surface-layer modulation, and interlayer modification/coupling. Simultaneously, the underlying mechanisms for improved electrochemical activities are highlighted. Finally, the strategic evaluation on further research directions of TMDCs in-plane activation is featured. This work would shed some light on future design trends of TMDCs-based functional materials for electrochemical energy-related applications.

Low-dimensional nanomaterials for antibacterial applications

The excessive use of antibiotics has led to a rise in drug-resistant bacteria. These "superbugs" are continuously emerging and becoming increasingly harder to treat. As a result, new and effective treatment protocols that have minimal risks of generating drug-resistant bacteria are urgently required. Advanced nanomaterials are particularly promising due to their drug loading/releasing capabilities combined with their potential photodynamic/photothermal therapeutic properties. In this review, 0-dimensional, 1-dimensional, 2-dimensional, and 3-dimensional nanomaterial-based systems are comprehensively discussed for bacterial-based diagnostic and treatment applications. Since the use of these platforms as antibacterials is relatively new, this review will provide appropriate insight into their construction and applications. As such, we hope this review will inspire researchers to explore antibacterial-based nanomaterials with the aim of developing systems for clinical applications.

Stabilization of lead in polluted sediment based on an eco-friendly amendment strategy: Microenvironment response mechanism

Stabilization is the most important remediation mechanisms for sediment polluted heavy metals. However, little research has been done on the identification of microenvironmental response and internal correlation, as well as synergistic mechanisms during heavy metal remediation. This study aims to investigate the inner response mechanisms of microenvironment after the lead (Pb) are gradually stabilized in sediment. An eco-friendly amendment strategy which firstly used 100% biodegradable sophorolipids (SOP) to modify chlorapatite (ClAP) for the fabrication of SOP@nClAP was applied in this study. The stabilization efficiency of Pb was significantly improved by SOP@nClAP compared with ClAP. Most importantly, the high-throughput sequencing showed that the dominant species in the sediment changed with the stabilization of Pb. The decrease of Proteobacteria and increase of Firmicutes, especially the Sedimentibacter within the phylum Firmicute directly suggested that large amounts of Pb were stabilized. This research is not only devoted to stabilize Pb in sediment by eco-friendly amendment strategy, but also keep a watchful eye on microenvironment response mechanisms during the Pb stabilization in sediment. Therefore, this study lays a foundation for the future application of more heavy metal amendment strategies in the sediment environment and improves the possibility of large-scale site amendment.

Photocatalytic degradation of ranitidine and reduction of nitrosamine dimethylamine formation potential over MXene-Ti3C2/MoS2 under visible light irradiation

Photocatalysis is an effective method to degrade ranitidine (RAN), which is a typical precursor of nitrosamine dimethylamine (NDMA), an extremely potent human carcinogen. Herein, MXene-Ti₃C₂/MoS₂ composites were prepared by a hydrothermal treatment aiming to use them for the photocatalytic degradation of RAN and the reduction of NDMA formation potential (NDMA-FP) under visible light irradiation for the first time. The analysis of the morphology, chemical composition and structure of these composites as well as the results of electrochemical experiments showed that a heterojunction was formed between MoS₂ and Ti₃C₂, which facilitated the separation of electron-hole pairs and charge transfer, and thereby the photocatalytic performance. The MXene-Ti₃C₂/MoS₂ composite (MT-4) exhibited the best photocatalytic performance in 60 min, with the highest RAN degradation and mineralization efficiencies of 88.4% and 73.58%, and the lowest NDMA-FP of 2.01%. Active species, including •O₂^- radicals, h⁺ and •OH radicals, all contributed to the degradation of RAN, among which •OH radicals were the main active species involved in the photocatalytic activity. The mechanism of the photocatalytic degradation of RAN over MXene-Ti₃C₂/MoS₂ photocatalyst under visible light irradiation was proposed. This work opens up a new perspective on the applications of MXene-based materials for photocatalytic degradation of challenging pollutants.

Aqueous Adsorption of Heavy Metals on Metal Sulfide Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Application

Heavy metals pollution of aqueous solutions generates considerable concerns as they adversely impact the environment and health of humans. Among the remediation technologies, adsorption with metal sulfide nanomaterials has proven to be a promising strategy due to their cost-effective, environmentally friendly, surface modulational, and amenable properties. Their excellent adsorption characteristics are attributed to the inherently exposed sulfur atoms that interact with heavy metals through various processes. This work presents a comprehensive overview of the sequestration of heavy metals from water using metal sulfide nanomaterials. The common methods of synthesis, the structures, and the supports for metal sulfide nano-adsorbents are accentuated. The adsorption mechanisms and governing conditions and parameters are stressed. Practical heavy metal remediation application in aqueous media using metal sulfide nanomaterials is highlighted, and the existing research gaps are underscored.

Hierarchical urchin-like amorphous carbon with Co-adding anchored on nickel foam: A free-standing electrode for advanced asymmetrical supercapacitors and adsorbed Pb (II)

The booming development of carbon materials is of great value for diverse applications, owing to their superior electron conductivity, unique structures, and excellent cycle lifetime. This study presents two hierarchically structured amorphous carbon materials for asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device: i) the MOFs-derived urchin-like amorphous carbon anchored on nickel foam (UAC@NF) as positive electrode; ii) high temperature activated graphite carbon felt (GF500) as negative electrode. This ASC device achieves a higher energy density of 0.036 mWh cm^-3 at a power density of 0.984 mW cm^-3 and demonstrates better cycling performance with 91.4% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles, compared with the other carbon-based supercapacitor. In addition, the UAC@NF after 10,000 cycles displays much better adsorption performance for Pb (II) compared with the unused UAC@NF. We have demonstrated the relationship between carbon materials' structure and performance by combining experiment and theoretical calculation. Predominantly, our work can provide a new direction for the common development of amorphous carbon materials in the field of energy and environment.

Response of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris to Cr stress and continuous Cr removal in a membrane photobioreactor

This study evaluated the toxicity of Cr(VI) to microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, and its removal by continuous microalgae cultivation in membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Batch cultivation in photobioreactors showed that low concentration of Cr(VI) (0.5 and 1.0 mg L^-1) stimulated the growth of C. vulgaris, while 2.0 and 5.0 mg L^-1 Cr(VI) in the wastewater significantly inhibited the growth of C. vulgaris. Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities that represented cellular antioxidant capacity significantly increased at 0.5 and 1.0 mg L^-1 Cr(VI), and then gradually decreased with the continuous increase of Cr(VI) concentration. The content of malondialdehyde, which represents the degree of cellular oxidative damage, increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration and reached the peak value at 2.0 mg L-1 Cr(VI). C. vulgaris was then cultured in MPBR equipped with hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane module to achieve continuous removal of Cr from wastewater. With the in-situ solid-liquid separation function of the membrane module, solid retention time (SRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the reactor could be controlled separately. Experimental results showed that both SRT and HRT had significant effects on the algal biomass production and pollutants removal. During the continuous operation, MPBR achieved a maximum total Cr reduction of 50.0% at HRT of 3-day and SRT of 40-day, and a maximum volumetric removal rate of total Cr of 0.21 mg L^-1 d^-1 at HRT of 2-day and SRT of 40-day.

Reaction probability and kinetics of water splitting on the penta-NiAs2 monolayer from an ab initio molecular dynamics investigation

The reaction probability and kinetics of the water splitting process on the penta-NiAs2 monolayer are studied using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. A total of 100 trajectories are investigated, in which a H2O molecule is set to strike the surface with a translational energy of 1 eV or 2 eV. The results show that the NiAs2 monolayer is an excellent candidate for the activation of water splitting with a reaction probability of 94% for both energy levels. Interestingly, the kinetics of two O-H dissociation stages varies greatly with respect to the inletting translational energy. Interpreting the reaction data for the 1 eV case, we conclude that O-H1 and O-H2 dissociations are first-order processes. However, such dissociation steps become pseudo-zeroth order in the 2 eV case. At the time of the dissociation, the force acting on atoms and the principal component analysis suggest that the two OH breaking stages behave like harmonic springs until reaching the dissociation.
