Interconversion and functional composites of metal-organic frameworks and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of highly ordered crystalline porous materials, possess structural tunability, high specific surface area, well-defined pores, and diverse pore environments and morphologies, making them suitable for various potential applications. Moreover, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), constructed from organic molecules with complementary hydrogen-bonding patterns, are rapidly evolving into a novel category of porous materials due to their facile mild preparation conditions, solution processability, easy regeneration capability, and excellent biocompatibility. These distinctive advantages have garnered significant attention across diverse fields. Considering the inherent binding affinity between MOFs and HOFs along with the fact that many MOF linkers can serve as building blocks for constructing HOFs, their combination holds promise in creating functional materials with enhanced performance. This feature paper provides an introduction to the interconversion between MOFs and HOFs followed by highlighting the emerging applications of MOF-HOF composites. Finally, we briefly discuss the current challenges associated with future perspectives on MOF-HOF composites.

Regioselective super-assembly of Prussian blue analogue

The construction of high-asymmetrical structures demonstrates significant potential in improving the functionality and distinctness of nanomaterials, but remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we develop a one-pot method to fabricate regioselective super-assembly of Prussian blue analogue (PBA) -- a PBA anisotropic structure (PBA-AS) decorated with epitaxial modules--using a step-by-step epitaxial growth on a rapidly self-assembled cubic substrate guided by thiocyanuric acid (TCA) molecules. The epitaxial growth units manifest as diverse geometric shapes, which are predominantly concentrated on the {100}, {111}, or {100}+{111} crystal plane of the cubic substrate. The crystal plane and morphology of epitaxial module can be regulated by changing the TCA concentration and reaction temperature, enabling a high level of controllability over specific assembly sites and structures. To illustrate the advantage of the asymmetrical structure, phosphated PBA-AS demonstrates improved performance in the oxygen evolution reaction compared to simple phosphated PBA nanocube. This method offers valuable insights for designing asymmetrical nanomaterials with intricate architectures and versatile functionalities.

Heteroepitaxial MOF-on-MOF Photocatalyst for Solar-Driven Water Splitting

Assembly of different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into hybrid MOF-on-MOF heterostructures has been established as a promising approach to develop synergistic performances for a variety of applications. Here, we explore the performance of a MOF-on-MOF heterostructure by epitaxial growth of MIL-88B(Fe) onto UiO-66(Zr)-NH2 nanoparticles. The face-selective design and appropriate energy band structure alignment of the selected MOF constituents have permitted its application as an active heterogeneous photocatalyst for solar-driven water splitting. The composite achieves apparent quantum yields for photocatalytic overall water splitting at 400 and 450 nm of about 0.9%, values that compare much favorably with previous analogous reports. Understanding of this high activity has been gained by spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization together with scanning transmission and transmission electron microscopy (STEM, TEM) measurements. This study exemplifies the possibility of developing a MOF-on-MOF heterostructure that operates under a Z-scheme mechanism and exhibits outstanding activity toward photocatalytic water splitting under solar light.

Metal-organic framework based self-powered devices for human body energy harvesting

The shift from traditional bulky electronics to smart wearable devices represents a crucial trend in technological advancement. In recent years, the focus has intensified on harnessing thermal and mechanical energy from human activities to power small wearable electronics. This vision has attracted considerable attention from researchers, with an emphasis on the development of suitable materials that can efficiently convert human body energy into usable electrical form. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique tunable structures, large surface areas, and high porosity, emerge as a promising material category for human body energy harvesting due to their ability to be precisely engineered at the molecular level, which allows for the optimization of their properties to suit specific energy harvesting needs. This article explores the progressive development of MOF materials, highlighting their potential in the realm of self-power devices for wearable applications. It first introduces the typical energy harvesting routes that are particularly suitable for harvesting human body energy, including thermoelectric, triboelectric, and piezoelectric techniques. Then, it delves into various research advances that have demonstrated the efficacy of MOFs in capturing and converting body-generated energy into electrical energy, emphasizing on the conceptual design, device fabrication, and applications in medical health monitoring, human-computer interaction, and motion monitoring. Furthermore, it discusses potential future directions for research in MOF-based self-powered devices and outlines perspectives that could drive breakthroughs in the efficiency and practicality of these devices.

Melamine-based metal-organic frameworks for high-performance supercapacitor applications

Melamine-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for high-performance supercapacitor applications are described in this paper. Melamine (Me) is employed as an organic linker, and three metal ions cobalt, nickel, and iron (Co, Ni, Fe) are used ascentral metal ions to manufacture the desired MOF materials (Co-Me, Ni-Me, and Fe-Me). While melamine is an inexpensive organic linker for creating MOF materials, homogenous molecular structures can be difficult to produce. The most effective technique for expanding the molecular structures of MOFs through suitable experimental optimization is used in this work. The MOFs materials are characterized using standard techniques. The kinetics of the materials' reactions are investigated using attenuated total reflectance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) studies verified the development of the MOFs structure. The surface morphology of the produced materials is investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The elements found in MOFs are studied via XPS analysis, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX), mapping, and mapping. The materials' absorption characteristics were examined by the use of UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the materials is examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA); these materials are more stable, according to the findings, even at high temperatures. The electrochemical investigation determines the specific capacitance of the materials. The specific capacitance of Co-Me, Ni-Me, and Fe-Me in 3 M KOH electrolyte is 1267.36, 803.22, and 507.59F/g @ 1 A-1, according to the three-electrode arrangement. The two-electrode device maximizes power and energy density by using an asymmetrical supercapacitor in a 3 M KOH electrolyte. The power and energy densities of Co-Me, Ni-Me, and Fe-Me are 3650.63, 2813.21, and 6210.45 W kg-1, and 68.43, 46.32, and 42.2 Wh kg-1, respectively. According to the materials stability test, the MOFs are highly stable after 10,000 cycles. Preliminary results suggest that the materials are suitable for usage in high-end supercapacitor uses.

Europium functionalized porphyrin-based metal-organic framework heterostructure and hydrogel for visual ratiometric fluorescence sensing of sulfonamides in foods

Protecting human health and ensuring food security require the swift and accurate detection of sulfonamides (SAs) residues in foods. Herein, we proposed an Eu-postfunctionalized bimetallic porphyrin metal-organic framework (PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec) synthesized solvothermally for fluorescence sensing. The PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec fluorescent sensor demonstrated excellent stability and high selectivity to SAs, and the detection limits of sulfamethazine (SM2), sulfamerazine (SMR), and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD) were as low as 56 nmol/L, 45 nmol/L, and 56 nmol/L, respectively. The PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec fluorescent sensor was successfully applied for the detection of SM2, SMR, and SMD in real pork and milk samples, with satisfactory recoveries (81.2-118.3%) and high precisions (RSDs <8.2, n = 3). Combining the optical properties of the nanohybrids, PCN-221(Zr/Ce)@Eu-DPA-H4btec integrated fluorescent hydrogels were innovatively prepared for visual sensing of SM2, SMR, and SMD. This study provides an uncomplicated and sensitive method for SAs detection in food matrices.

Bioactive Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Distinctive Platform to Diagnosis and Treat Vascular Diseases

Vascular diseases (VDs) pose the leading threat worldwide due to high morbidity and mortality. The detection of VDs is commonly dependent on individual signs, which limits the accuracy and timeliness of therapies, especially for asymptomatic patients in clinical management. Therefore, more effective early diagnosis and lesion-targeted treatments remain a pressing clinical need. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials formed by the coordination of inorganic metal ions and organic ligands. Due to their unique high specific surface area, structural flexibility, and functional versatility, MOFs are recognized as highly promising candidates for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the field of VDs. In this review, the potential of MOFs to act as biosensors, contrast agents, artificial nanozymes, and multifunctional therapeutic agents in the diagnosis and treatment of VDs from the clinical perspective, highlighting the integration between clinical methods with MOFs is generalized. At the same time, multidisciplinary cooperation from chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine to promote the substantial commercial transformation of MOFs in tackling VDs is called for.

Central Metal-Triggered Structural Transformation of a 2D Layered MOF: Mechanistic Studies and Applications

The structural transformation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted increasing interests, which has not only produced various new structures but also served as a fantastic platform for MOF-based kinetic analysis. Multiple reaction conditions have been documented to cause structural transformation; nevertheless, central metal-induced topological alteration of MOFs is rare. Herein, we reported a structural transformation of a 2D layered Cd-MOF driven by Cd(II) ions. After being submerged in the aqueous solution of cadmium nitrate, the twofold interpenetrated 2D network of [Cd(hsb-2)(bdc)·5H2O]n [HSB-W10; bdc: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; hsb-2:1,2-bis(4'-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane] was converted into a novel noninterpenetrated 2D network [Cd1.5(hsb-2)(bdc)1.5(H2O)2·H2O]n (HSB-W16). This partial dissolution-recrystallization process was investigated by integrating controlled experiments, 1H NMR spectra, and photographic tracking analysis. Furthermore, a novel strategy combining in situ multicomponent dye encapsulation and central metal-triggered structural transformation was developed for the fabrication of MOF materials with white-light emission. By adopting this strategy, different dye guest molecules were concurrently introduced into the HSB-W16 host matrix, leading to a range of white-light-emitting MOF composites. This work will enable detailed studies of solid-state transformations and demonstrate a promising application prospect for structural transformation.

Non-derivatizing solvent assisted waste-derived cellulose/ MOF composite porous matrix for efficient metal ion removal: comprehensive analysis of batch and continuous packed-bed column sorption studies

The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for wastewater treatment in continuous operation is a major challenge. To address this, the present study demonstrates the eco-friendly and economic synthesis of Ca-MOF immobilized cellulose beads (Ca-MOF-CB) derived from paper waste. The synthesized Ca-MOF-CB were characterized using standard analytical techniques. Batch sorption studies were performed to check the effect of cellulose composition (wt%), Ca-MOF loading, contact time, and initial metal ion (Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+) concentration. Ca-MOF-CB beads exhibited outstanding equilibrium sorption capacities for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+, with estimated values of 281.22 ± 7.8, 104.01 ± 10.58, and 114.21 ± 9.68 mg g-1, respectively. Different non-linear isotherms and kinetic models were applied which confirmed the spontaneous, endothermic reactions for the physisorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+. Based on the highest equilibrium sorption capacity for Pb2+ ion, in-depth parametric column studies were conducted in an indigenously developed packed-bed column set-up. The effect of packed-bed height (10 and 20 cm), inlet flow rate (5 and 10 mL min-1), and inlet Pb2+ ion concentration (200, 300, and 500 mg L-1) were studied. The breakthrough curves obtained at different operating conditions were fitted with the empirical models viz. the bed depth service time (BDST), Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Yan to estimate the column design parameters. In order to determine the financial implications at large-scale industrial operations, an affordable synthesis cost of 1 kg of Ca-MOF-CB was estimated. Conclusively, the present study showed the feasibility of the developed Ca-MOF-CB for the continuous removal of metal ions at an industrial scale.

Recent Advances in Pristine Iron Triad Metal-Organic Framework Cathodes for Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Pristine iron triad metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., Fe-MOFs, Co-MOFs, Ni-MOFs, and heterometallic iron triad MOFs, are utilized as versatile and promising cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries, owing to their distinctive structure characteristics, including modifiable and designable composition, multi-electron redox-active sites, exceptional porosity, and stable construction facilitating rapid ion diffusion. Notably, pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes have recently achieved significant milestones in electrochemical energy storage due to their exceptional electrochemical properties. Here, the recent advances in pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries are summarized. The redox reaction mechanisms and essential strategies to boost the electrochemical behaviors in associated electrochemical energy storage devices are also explored. Furthermore, insights into the future prospects related to pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries are also delivered.

Electrochemical protein biosensors for disease marker detection: progress and opportunities

The development of artificial intelligence-enabled medical health care has created both opportunities and challenges for next-generation biosensor technology. Proteins are extensively used as biological macromolecular markers in disease diagnosis and the analysis of therapeutic effects. Electrochemical protein biosensors have achieved desirable specificity by using the specific antibody-antigen binding principle in immunology. However, the active centers of protein biomarkers are surrounded by a peptide matrix, which hinders charge transfer and results in insufficient sensor sensitivity. Therefore, electrode-modified materials and transducer devices have been designed to increase the sensitivity and improve the practical application prospects of electrochemical protein sensors. In this review, we summarize recent reports of electrochemical biosensors for protein biomarker detection. We highlight the latest research on electrochemical protein biosensors for the detection of cancer, viral infectious diseases, inflammation, and other diseases. The corresponding sensitive materials, transducer structures, and detection principles associated with such biosensors are also addressed generally. Finally, we present an outlook on the use of electrochemical protein biosensors for disease marker detection for the next few years.

Rational Construction of Pt Incorporated Co3O4 as High-Performance Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalysts in alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting are required to efficiently produce hydrogen while posing a challenge to show excellent performances. Herein, we have successfully synthesized platinum nanoparticles incorporated in a Co3O4 nanostructure (denoted as Pt-Co3O4) that show superior HER activity and stability in alkaline solutions (the overpotentials of 37 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2). The outstanding electrocatalytic activity originates from synergistic effects between Pt and Co3O4 and increased electron conduction. Theoretical calculations show a significant decrease in the ΔGH* of Co active sites and a remarkable increase in electron transport. Our work puts forward a special and simple synthesized way of adjusting the H* adsorption energy of an inert site for application in HER.

MOFs-Based Materials with Confined Space: Opportunities and Challenges for Energy and Catalytic Conversion

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a very promising material in the fields of energy and catalysis due to their rich active sites, tunable pore size, structural adaptability, and high specific surface area. The concepts of "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" have opened up huge development opportunities in the fields of energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis, and have made significant progress and breakthroughs. In recent years, people have shown great interest in the development of MOFs materials and their applications in the above research fields. This review introduces the design strategies and latest progress of MOFs are included based on their structures such as core-shell, yolk-shell, multi-shelled, sandwich structures, unique crystal surface exposures, and MOF-derived nanomaterials in detail. This work comprehensively and systematically reviews the applications of MOF-based materials in energy and catalysis and reviews the research progress of MOF materials for atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators. Finally, this review looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of controlling the synthesis of MOFs through low-cost, improved conductivity, high-temperature heat resistance, and integration with machine learning. This review provides useful references for promoting the application of MOFs-based materials in the aforementioned fields.

Interfacial Engineering of Heterogeneous Reactions for MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a subclass of porous crystalline materials with unique structures and multifunctional properties, play a pivotal role in various research domains. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward composite materials based on MOFs, particularly MOF-on-MOF heterostructures. Compared to individual MOF materials, MOF-on-MOF structures harness the distinctive attributes of two or more different MOFs, enabling synergistic effects and allowing for the tailored design of diverse multilayered architectures to expand their application scope. However, the rational design and facile synthesis of MOF-on-MOF composite materials are in principle challenging due to the structural diversity and the intricate interfaces. Hence, this review primarily focuses on elucidating the factors that influence their interfacial growth, with a specific emphasis on the interfacial engineering of heterogeneous reactions, in which MOF-on-MOF hybrids can be conveniently obtained by using pre-fabricated MOF precursors. These factors are categorized as internal and external elements, encompassing inorganic metals, organic ligands, lattice matching, nucleation kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Meanwhile, these intriguing MOF-on-MOF materials offer a wide range of advantages in various application fields, such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and energy-related applications. Finally, this review highlights current complexities and challenges while providing a forward-looking perspective on future research directions.

Advanced photocatalytic materials based degradation of micropollutants and their use in hydrogen production - a review

The use of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and pesticides in modern healthcare and agriculture, along with expanding industrialization, heavily contaminates aquatic environments. This leads to severe carcinogenic implications and critical health issues in living organisms. The photocatalytic methods provide an eco-friendly solution to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Sunlight-driven photocatalytic wastewater treatment contributes to hydrogen production and valuable product generation. The removal of contaminants from wastewater through photocatalysis is a highly efficient method for enhancing the ecosystem and plays a crucial role in the dual-functional photocatalysis process. In this review, a wide range of catalysts are discussed, including heterojunction photocatalysts and various hybrid semiconductor photocatalysts like metal oxides, semiconductor adsorbents, and dual semiconductor photocatalysts, which are crucial in this dual function of degradation and green fuel production. The effects of micropollutants in the ecosystem, degradation efficacy of multi-component photocatalysts such as single-component, two-component, three-component, and four-component photocatalysts were discussed. Dual-functional photocatalysis stands out as an energy-efficient and cost-effective method. We have explored the challenges and difficulties associated with dual-functional photocatalysts. Multicomponent photocatalysts demonstrate superior efficiency in degrading pollutants and producing hydrogen compared to their single-component counterparts. Dual-functional photocatalysts, incorporating TiO2, g-C3N4, CeO2, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and carbon quantum dots (CQDs)-based composites, exhibit remarkable performance. The future of synergistic photocatalysis envisions large-scale production facilitate integrating advanced 2D and 3D semiconductor photocatalysts, presenting a promising avenue for sustainable and efficient pollutant degradation and hydrogen production from environmental remediation technologies.

Phytotoxicity of metal-organic framework MOF-74(Co) nanoparticles to pea seedlings

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have unique structure and fantastic properties for wide-ranging applications. Pilot studies highlighted the toxicity and potential threats of MOF materials to the environment. In this study, we revealed the phytotoxicity of MOF-74(Co) nanoparticles (NPs) and their inhibitory effects on the photosynthesis of pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L.). MOF-74(Co) NPs have limited influences on the germination of pea seeds, but distinct environmental effects of MOF-74(Co) NPs were found in pea seedlings. The root length of pea seedlings, fresh weight and dry weight decreased by 50.0%, 29.2% and 36.4%, respectively, compared with the control group, when the material concentration was greater than 100 mg L-1. The net photosynthetic rate decreased by 48% and the intercellular CO2 concentration increased by 183% upon exposure to MOF-74(Co) NPs. Mechanistically, MOF-74(Co) exposure led to Co uptake in pea seedlings; the increases were 223% for the root, 267% for the stem and 6562% for the leaves, respectively, when the MOF-74(Co) NP concentration was 10 mg L-1. The released Co ions from MOF-74(Co) NPs caused oxidative damage to leaves and induced damage to the acceptor side of photosynthesis system II. Our results indicated that the environmental toxicity of MOF materials was largely regulated by the metal centers. MOF materials with nontoxic metal elements are desirable for future applications.

Metal-Organic Framework-Enabled Sustainable Agrotechnologies: An Overview of Fundamentals and Agricultural Applications

With aggravated abiotic and biotic stresses from increasing climate change, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as versatile toolboxes for developing environmentally friendly agrotechnologies aligned with agricultural practices and safety. Herein, we have explored MOF-based agrotechnologies, focusing on their intrinsic properties, such as structural and catalytic characteristics. Briefly, MOFs possess a sponge-like porous structure that can be easily stimulated by the external environment, facilitating the controlled release of agrochemicals, thus enabling precise delivery of agrochemicals. Additionally, MOFs offer the ability to remove or degrade certain pollutants by capturing them within their pores, facilitating the development of MOF-based remediation technologies for agricultural environments. Furthermore, the metal-organic hybrid nature of MOFs grants them abundant catalytic activities, encompassing photocatalysis, enzyme-mimicking catalysis, and electrocatalysis, allowing for the integration of MOFs into degradation and sensing agrotechnologies. Finally, the future challenges that MOFs face in agrotechnologies were proposed to promote the development of sustainable agriculture practices.

Enhanced photocatalysis of metal/covalent organic frameworks by plasmonic nanoparticles and homo/hetero-junctions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention in photocatalysis due to their unique features including extensive surface area, adjustable pores, and the ability to incorporate various functional groups. However, challenges such as limited visible light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination often hinder their photocatalytic efficiency. Recent developments have introduced plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) and junctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF/COF-based photocatalysts improved by integration of plasmonic NPs and junctions. We begin by examining the utilization of plasmonic NPs, known for absorbing longer-wavelength light compared to typical MOFs/COFs. These NPs exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when excited, effectively enhancing the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. Moreover, we discuss the role of homo/hetero-junctions in facilitating charge separation, further boosting the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. The mechanisms behind the improved photocatalytic performance of these composites are discussed, along with an assessment of challenges and opportunities in the field, guiding future research directions.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy for Dynamic Investigation of Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Photoresponsive MOFs with precise and adjustable reticular structures are attractive for light conversion applications. Uncovering the photoinduced carrier dynamics lays the essential foundation for the further development and optimization of the MOF material. With the application of time-resolved spectroscopy, photophysical processes including excimer formation, energy transfer/migration, and charge transfer/separation have been widely investigated. However, the identification of distinct photophysical processes in real experimental MOF spectra still remains difficult due to the spectral and dynamic complexity of MOFs. In this Perspective, we summarize the typical spectral features of these photophysical processes and the related analysis methods for dynamic studies performed by time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Based on the recent understanding of excited-state properties of photoresponsive MOFs and the discussion of challenges and future outlooks, this Perspective aims to provide convenience for MOF kinetic analysis and contribute to the further development of photoresponsive MOF material.

Highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescence detection of tetracycline residues in food samples based on Eu/Zr-MOF

The development of a simple, rapid, and sensitive method for monitoring antibiotic residues is crucial for maintaining food safety. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on bimetallic organic framework (Eu/Zr-MOF) was developed for the detection of tetracycline (TC). The Eu/Zr-MOF was synthesized by the coordination of Eu3+ and Zr4+ with 2-APDC, which exhibited a grape-like cluster morphology and dual-emitting fluorescence at 430 nm/616 nm. Based on the internal filtering effect (IFE), significant fluorescence quenching was observed at 430 nm, whereas only slight changes occurred at 616 nm. The ratiometric sensing offered two broad linear ranges (0.5-8 μg/mL; 10-60 μg/mL) and a low detection limit (26.7 ng/mL). The proposed method was applied to the determination of TC in pork and water samples. Fluorescent sensors have the advantages of simple design, fast response, and high sensitivity, thus providing a promising means for evaluating the safety of food contaminated with TC.

Hollow Ni3S4@Co3S4 with core-satellite nanostructure derived from metal-organic framework (MOF)-on-MOF hybrids as an electrode material for supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have found wide applications in the field of supercapacitors due to their highly controllable porous structure, big specific surface area, and abundant chemical functional groups. MOF-on-MOF hybrids not only enhance the composition of MOFs (such as ligands and/or metal centers) but also provide greater structural diversity. By utilizing MOFs as precursors for preparing sulfides, the unique characteristics and inherent structure of MOFs are preserved but their conductivity and capacitance are enhanced. This study successfully synthesized hollow-structured Ni3S4@Co3S4 derived from an Ni-MOF@ZIF-67 hybrid structure, where the Ni-MOF serves as the core and ZIF-67 as the satellite. The Ni3S4@Co3S4 electrode demonstrated a specific capacity as high as 747.3 C g-1 at 1 A g-1, and it could still maintain 77% of its initial capacity at 10 A g-1. Furthermore, the assembled Ni3S4@Co3S4//AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device achieved a maximum energy density of 30.8 W h kg-1 when the power density was 750 W kg-1. The device exhibited remarkable cycling durability, retaining 85.4% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. Therefore, the derived functional materials based on MOF-on-MOF provide a more scalable and promising approach for the preparation of efficient electrode materials.

Highly Light-Harvesting MOF-on-MOF Heterostructure: Cascading Functionality to Flexible Photogating of Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor and Bienzyme Cascade Detection

Recently, organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) bioanalysis has become a prominent technique for the high-performance detection of biomolecules. However, as a sensitive index of the OPECT, the dynamic regulation transconductance (gm) is still severely deficient. Herein, this work reports a new photosensitive metal-organic framework (MOF-on-MOF) heterostructure for the effective modulation of maximum gm and natural bienzyme interfacing toward choline detection. Specifically, the bidentate ligand MOF (b-MOF) was assembled onto the UiO-66 MOF (u-MOF) by a modular assembly method, which could facilitate the charge separation and generate enhanced photocurrents and offer a biophilic environment for the immobilization of choline oxidase (ChOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) through hydrogen-bonded bridges. The transconductance of the OPECT could be flexibly altered by increased light intensity to maximal value at zero gate bias, and sensitive choline detection was achieved with a detection limit of 0.2 μM. This work reveals the potential of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures for futuristic optobioelectronics.

Metal-organic framework-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts

Photocatalysis is a promising technology to resolve energy and environmental issues, where the design of high-efficiency photocatalysts is the central task. As an emerging family of photocatalysts, semiconducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with remarkable features have demonstrated great potential in various photocatalytic fields. Compared to MOF-based photocatalysts with a single component, construction of S-scheme heterojunctions can render MOFs with enhanced charge separation, redox capacity and solar energy utilization, and thus improved photocatalytic performance. Herein, an overview of the recent advances in the design of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications is provided. The basic principle of S-scheme heterojunctions is introduced. Then, three types of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions with different compositions are systematically summarized including MOF/non-MOF, MOF-on-MOF and MOF-derived heterojunctions. Afterwards, the enhanced performances of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions in hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, C-H functionalization, H2O2 production and wastewater treatment are highlighted. Lastly, the current challenges and future prospects regarding the design and applications of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions are discussed to inspire the further development of this emerging field.

ZnO-Au@ZIF-8 core-shell nanorod arrays for ppb-level NO2 detection

ZnO-Au@ZIF-8 core-shell heterostructures were prepared by ZIF-8 encapsulation of sacrificial ZnO-Au nanorods. Because of the catalytic activity of the Au nanoparticles and the sieving effects of the ZIF-8, the ZnO-Au@ZIF-8 heterostructures showed an outstanding response of 1.8 to 5 ppb NO2, and exhibited higher selectivity, stability, anti-humidity and fast response and recovery properties. The combination of the gas-selective catalytic activity of noble metals with the MOF filter used in this work can be easily extended to synthesize other types of MOS@MOF sensors, opening a new avenue for the detection of hazardous gases.

Polymorphism and orientation control of copper-dicarboxylate metal-organic framework thin films through vapour- and liquid-phase growth

Precise control over the crystalline phase and crystallographic orientation within thin films of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desirable. Here, we report a comparison of the liquid- and vapour-phase film deposition of two copper-dicarboxylate MOFs starting from an oriented metal hydroxide precursor. X-ray diffraction revealed that the vapour- or liquid-phase reaction of the linker with this precursor results in different crystalline phases, morphologies, and orientations. Pole figure analysis showed that solution-based growth of the MOFs follows the axial texture of the metal hydroxide precursor, resulting in heteroepitaxy. In contrast, the vapour-phase method results in non-epitaxial growth with uniplanar texture only.

Leveraging metal node-linker self-assembly to access functional anisotropy of zirconium-based MOF-on-MOF epitaxial heterostructure thin films

Chemically robust, functional porous materials are imperative for designing novel membranes for chemical separation and heterogeneous catalysts. Among the array of potential materials, zirconium (Zr)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered considerable attention, and have been investigated for applications related to gas separation and storage, and catalysis. However, a significant challenge with Zr-MOFs lies in their processibility, particularly in achieving homogenous thin films and controlling functional anisotropy. The recent developments in MOF thin film fabrication methodologies do not yield a solution to achieve mild reaction condition growth of Zr-MOF thin films with epitaxial MOF-on-MOF geometry (i.e. functional anisotropy). In the current work, we have devised a straightforward methodology under room temperature conditions, which enables epitaxial, oriented MOF-on-MOF thin film growth. This achievement is accomplished through a stepwise self-assembly approach involving Zr nodes and linkers on a functionalized substrate. This de novo developed strategy of functionality design is demonstrated for UiO-66 (University of Oslo) type Zr-MOFs. We have demonstrated the precise placement of chemical functionalities within the thin film structure, allowing for controlled chemical diffusion and regulation of diffusion selectivity.

Hybrid organic frameworks: Synthesis strategies and applications in photocatalytic wastewater treatment - A review

Hybrid organic framework materials are a class of hierarchical porous crystalline materials that have emerged in recent years, composed of three types of porous crystal materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). The combination of various organic framework properties in hybrid organic frameworks generates synergistic effects, which has attracted widespread attention from researchers. The synthesis methods of hybrid organic frameworks are also an intriguing topic, enabling the formation of core-shell heterostructures through epitaxial growth, template conversion, medium growth, or direct combination. These hybrid organic framework materials have demonstrated remarkable performance in the application of photocatalytic wastewater purification and have developed various forms of applications. This article reviews the preparation principles and methods of various hybrid organic frameworks and provides a detailed overview of the research progress of photocatalytic water purification hybrid organic frameworks. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of hybrid organic framework synthesis and their application in water purification are briefly discussed.

Heterostructured Bimetallic MOF-on-MOF Architectures for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Electron modulation presents a captivating approach to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains a challenging undertaking. In this study, an effective strategy is proposed to regulate the electronic structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by the construction of MOF-on-MOF heterogeneous architectures. As a representative heterogeneous architectures, MOF-74 on MOF-274 hybrids are in situ prepared on 3D metal substrates (NiFe alloy foam (NFF)) via a two-step self-assembly method, resulting in MOF-(74 + 274)@NFF. Through a combination of spectroscopic and theory calculation, the successful modulation of the electronic property of MOF-(74 + 274)@NFF is unveiled. This modulation arises from the phase conjugation of the two MOFs and the synergistic effect of the multimetallic centers (Ni and Fe). Consequently, MOF-(74 + 274)@NFF exhibits excellent OER activity, displaying ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in the 1.0 and 0.1 M KOH solutions, respectively. This work paves the way for manipulating the electronic structure of electrocatalysts to enhance their catalytic activity.

Dispersive solid phase extraction of tacrolimus from biological samples using curcumin and iron-based metal organic frameworks nanocomposite followed by LC-MS/MS determination

Tacrolimus is a potent immunosuppressive drug used in the prevention of tissue rejection. It has a narrow therapeutic index. Therefore, the determination of its concentration in biological fluids like plasma and urine is a very crucial issue. In this research, tacrolimus concentrations in plasma and urine samples were determined with a dispersive solid phase extraction procedure coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. For this purpose, a curcumin modified metal-organic framework was synthesized and used in extraction procedure. Tacrolimus was adsorbed onto the sorbent surface with aid of vortexing. Then, the adsorbed tacrolimus was eluted by a suitable solvent. Important parameters in extraction procedure were optimized by "one-variable-at-a-time" approach and reported as below: sorbent amount, 10 mg; sample solution pH, 2; agitation mode, vortexing; adsorption and desorption times, 1 min, and eluent (volume), methanol (200 µL). Under the optimized conditions and according to the International Council for Harmonization guidelines, the validation of the method was performed, and the results showed acceptable accuracy and precision (relative standard deviations ≤14 %), good linearity in a wide range (4-200 ng mL-1), and low limits of detection (1.2 ng mL-1 in plasma and 0.34 ng mL-1 in urine) and quantification (4.7 ng mL-1 in plasma and 1.12 ng mL-1 in urine). Finally, the validated method was successfully applied for the determination of tacrolimus in the plasma samples of the patients.

Bimetal doped Cu-Fe-ZIF-8/g-C3N4 nanocomposites for the adsorption of tetracycline hydrochloride from water

Bimetal doped Cu-Fe-zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8)/graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) (Cu-Fe-ZIF-8/GCN) nanocomposites were prepared via one-pot and ion-exchange methods. The main influencing factors, such as adsorbent concentration, TC concentration, initial pH, and coexisting ions, were evaluated in detail. Due to the suitable pore structures and the presence of multiple interactions on the surface, the nanocomposite showed a high adsorption capacity up to 932 mg g-1 for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), outperforming ZIF-8 by 4.8 times. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm were depicted in good detail using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation revealed that the adsorption of the nanocomposite under experimental conditions was a spontaneous heat absorption process, and was primarily driven by chemisorption. After four cycles of use, the nanocomposite retained 87.2% of its initial adsorption capacity, confirming its high reusability and broad application prospects in removing tetracycline-type pollutants from wastewater.

Preparation and extraction property study of corn cob-like magnetic mosaic carbon materials derived from MOF-on-MOF composites

BACKGROUND

Large accumulations of pesticide residues in the environment eventually enter the human body with food. Based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technology, it is possible to achieve efficient extraction of trace pesticide residues in foodstuffs, and the construction of MSPE adsorbents with excellent magnetic properties and many active sites is still one of the main research topics. Based on this, we developed a new strategy for the preparation of "MOF-on-MOF" composites, which were carbonized and used as adsorbents for the extraction of pesticide residues in cereals.

RESULTS

A novel corn cob core-shell composite Fe2O3@C@ZIF-8 was created by embedding ZIF-8 onto the surface of Fe2O3@C derived from MIL-88A(Fe), and used for the extraction of benzoylurea insecticides(BUs) from cereals. The adsorption behaviour between Fe2O3@C@ZIF-8 and BUs was investigated by static and kinetic experiments and the adsorption mechanism was elaborated. For the trace analysis of BUs, a magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) approach was also developed. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were 0.015-0.03 μg L-1 and 0.05-0.1 μg L-1, and the relative standard deviations for the intra-day and inter-day ranges were 1.82%-2.13 % and 3.85%-4.59 %, respectively. The spiked recoveries of the four cereals ranged from 82.72% to 104.45 %. After 10 cycles of use of Fe2O3@C@ZIF-8, the recoveries of BUs ranged from 77.90% to 96.74 %.

SIGNIFICANCE

The analytical method based on Fe2O3@C@ZIF-8 as adsorbent has a low limit of detection, a wide linear range and is highly applicable to the analysis of real samples. In addition, the strategy developed in this study for the preparation of thermoplastic polymer-assisted "MOF-on-MOF" composites has promising applications.

Metal-organic framework-based platforms for implantation applications: recent advances and challenges

The development of minimally invasive technology has promoted the widespread use of implant interventional materials, which play an important role in alleviating patients' pain during and after surgery. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their related hybrids formed by bridging ligands and metal nodes via covalent bonds represent one of the smart platforms in implant interventional fields due to their large surface area, adjustable compositions and structures, biodegradability, etc. Significant progresses in the implantation application of MOF-based materials have been achieved recently, but these studies are still in the initial stage. This review highlights the recent advances of MOFs and their related hybrids in orthopedic implantation, cardio-vascular implantation, neural tissue engineering, and biochemical sensing. Each correction between the structural features of MOFs and their corresponding implanted works is highlighted. Finally, the confronting challenges and future perspectives in the implant interventional field are discussed.

Heterogeneous MIL-88A on MIL-88B hybrid: A promising eco-friendly hybrid from green synthesis to dual application (Adsorption and photocatalysis) in tetracycline and dyes removal

Herein, the green synthesis of heterogeneous dual functional MIL88A-on-MIL88B hybrids (MIL: Materials InstituteLavoisier) with different amounts of MIL88B compared to MIL88A, including 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1, has been carried out. The photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline and adsorption of tetracycline and dyes (Direct Red 80, Direct Red 23, Acid Blue 92, and Reactive Orange 14) were investigated. Although the ratio of MIL88A-on-MIL88B (1:1) hybrid displayed the best activity, there is a slight difference in the photocatalytic performance of the other mass ratios studied. The result revealed that after 70 min of forming MIL88A on MIL88B, the best pollutant removal performance is obtained. During the limited synthesis time, the lopsided growth of MIL88A on the MIL88B surface limits the formation of sufficient functional groups and new pores between MIL88B as the substrate and MIL88A, which are effective and decisive in the performance. In the photocatalytic studies, the synthesized composite had good compatibility with the zero-order kinetics, and hydroxyl radicals were recognized as the most active species in the photocatalytic reaction. In the adsorption process, the MIL88A-on-MIL88A composite followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm. Besides, mechanisms such as π-π interaction/stacking, hydrogen bonding, and π-metal interaction were proposed for the pollutant adsorption process.

Recent progress of MOF-functionalized nanocomposites: From structure to properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.

Recent Progress in 2D Metal-Organic Framework-Related Materials

2D metal-organic frameworks-based (2D MOF-related) materials benefit from variable topological structures, plentiful open active sites, and high specific surface areas, demonstrating promising applications in gas storage, adsorption and separation, energy conversion, and other domains. In recent years, researchers have innovatively designed multiple strategies to avoid the adverse effects of conventional methods on the synthesis of high-quality 2D MOFs. This review focuses on the latest advances in creative synthesis techniques for 2D MOF-related materials from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Subsequently, the strategies are categorized and summarized for synthesizing 2D MOF-related composites and their derivatives. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted faced by 2D MOF-related materials and some targeted recommendations are put forward to inspire researchers to investigate more effective synthesis methods.

Sensitive determination of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with Zr-UiO-66 metal-organic framework entrapped FMWCNTs

A DNOC electrochemical sensor has been developed by using a composite of Zr-UiO-66 and FMWCNTs on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and using the differential pulse voltammetry technique. The synthesized materials were physico-chemically characterized by BET, PXRD, FTIR, TGA, EDX, and FESEM. Cyclic voltammetry showed that DNOC has three oxidation peaks at 0.03 V (RSD: 0.23%), 0.42 V (RSD: 0.21%), and 1.32 V (RSD: 0.32%) and three reduction peaks at - 0.20 V (RSD: 0.15%), - 0.82 V (RSD: 0.26%), and - 1.14 V (RSD: 0.19%) which follow a diffusion-controlled mechanism. Different parameters were optimized using differential pulse voltammetry and good linear ranges were found for the simultaneous detection of the three reduction peaks. For a specific concentration range of 0.1-50 μM, a limit of detection of 0.119 μM based on 3Sb/m was obtained. The interfering effects of five non-phenolic pesticides and five heavy metals were evaluated to highlight the selectivity of the developed sensor. It is the first report of an electrochemical DNOC sensor in which all three oxidation peaks are prominently visible. Ethion and chloropyriphos were found to inhibit the redox process of DNOC on the developed sensor platform Zr-UiO-66/FMWCNT/GCE. The sensor was successfully applied to DNOC determination in spiked potato samples and the results showed a standard deviation of less than 3%. The proposed method is expected to provide a novel platform for the quantitative determination of DNOC pesticides in vegetables.

All-in-one HN@Cu-MOF nanoparticles with enhanced reactive oxygen species generation and GSH depletion for effective tumor treatment

Non-invasive cancer therapies, especially those based on reactive oxygen species, including photodynamic therapy (PDT), have gained much interest. As emerging photodynamic nanocarriers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on porphyrin can release reactive oxygen species (ROS) to destroy cancer cells. However, due to the inefficient production of ROS by photosensitizers and the over-expression of glutathione (GSH) in the tumor microenvironment (TME), their therapeutic effect is not satisfactory. Therefore, herein, we developed a multi-functional nanoparticle, HN@Cu-MOF, to enhance the efficacy of PDT. We combined chemical dynamic therapy (CDT) and nitric oxide (NO) therapy by initiating sensitization to PDT and cell apoptosis in the treatment of tumors. The Cu2+-doped MOF reacted with GSH to form Cu+, exhibiting a strong CDT ability to generate hydroxyl radicals (˙OH). The Cu-MOF was coated with HN, which is hyaluronic acid (HA) modified by a nitric oxide donor. HN can target tumor cells over-expressing the CD44 receptor and consume GSH in the cells to release NO. Both cell experiments and in vivo experiments showed an excellent tumor inhibitory effect upon the treatment. Overall, the HN@Cu-MOF nanoparticle-integrated NO gas therapy and CDT with PDT led to a significant enhancement in GSH consumption and a remarkable elevation in ROS production.

Core-Shell Reactor Partitioning Enzyme and Prodrug by ZIF-8 for NADPH-Sensitive In Situ Prodrug Activation

Enzyme-prodrug therapies have shown unique advantages in efficiency, selectivity, and specificity of in vivo prodrug activation. However, precise spatiotemporal control of both the enzyme and its substrate at the target site, preservation of enzyme activity, and in situ substrate depletion due to low prodrug delivery efficiency continue to be great challenges. Here, we propose a novel core-shell reactor partitioning enzyme and prodrug by ZIF-8, which integrates an enzyme with its substrate and increases the drug loading capacity (DLC) using a prodrug as the building ligand to form a Zn-prodrug shell. Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) is immobilized in ZIF-8, and the antitumor drug dacarbazine (DTIC) is coordinated and deposited in its outer layer with a high DLC of 43.6±0.8 %. With this configuration, a much higher prodrug conversion efficiency of CYP450 (36.5±1.5 %) and lower IC50 value (26.3±2.6 μg/mL) are measured for B16-F10 cells with a higher NADPH concentration than those of L02 cells and HUVECs. With the tumor targeting ability of hyaluronic acid, this core-shell enzyme reactor shows a high tumor suppression rate of 96.6±1.9 % and provides a simple and versatile strategy for enabling in vivo biocatalysis to be more efficient, selective, and safer.

New Insights on Designing the Next-Generation Materials for Electrochemical Synthesis of Reactive Oxidative Species Towards Efficient and Scalable Water Treatment: A Review and Perspectives

Electrochemical water remediation technologies offer several advantages and flexibility for water treatment and degradation of contaminants. These technologies generate reactive oxidative species (ROS) that degrade pollutants. For the implementation of these technologies at an industrial scale, efficient, scalable, and cost-effective in-situ ROS synthesis is necessary to degrade complex pollutant mixtures, treat large amount of contaminated water, and clean water in a reasonable amount of time and cost. These targets are directly dependent on the materials used to generate the ROS, such as electrodes and catalysts. Here, we review the key design aspects of electrocatalytic materials for efficient in-situ ROS generation. We present a mechanistic understanding of ROS generation, including their reaction pathways, and integrate this with the key design considerations of the materials and the overall electrochemical reactor/cell. This involves tunning the interfacial interactions between the electrolyte and electrode which can enhance the ROS generation rate up to ~ 40% as discussed in this review. We also summarized the current and emerging materials for water remediation cells and created a structured dataset of about 500 electrodes and 130 catalysts used for ROS generation and water treatment. A perspective on accelerating the discovery and designing of the next generation electrocatalytic materials is discussed through the application of integrated experimental and computational workflows. Overall, this article provides a comprehensive review and perspectives on designing and discovering materials for ROS synthesis, which are critical not only for successful implementation of electrochemical water remediation technologies but also for other electrochemical applications.

Facile Synthesis of Ce-MOF for the Removal of Phosphate, Fluoride, and Arsenic

Ce-MOF was synthesized by a solvothermal synthesis method and was used to simultaneously remove phosphate, fluoride and arsenic (V) from water by adsorption. Ce-MOF was characterized by a nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The effects of initial concentration, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, pH value and adsorbent on the adsorption properties were investigated. A Langmuir isotherm model was used to fit the adsorption data, and the adsorption capacity of phosphate, fluoride, and arsenic (V) was calculated to be 41.2 mg·g-1, 101.8 mg·g-1 and 33.3 mg·g-1, respectively. Compared with the existing commercially available CeO2 and other MOFs, Ce-MOF has a much higher adsorption capacity. Furthermore, after two reuses, the performance of the adsorbent was almost unchanged, indicating it is a stable adsorbent and has good application potential in the field of wastewater treatment.

Occurrence, toxicity, impact and removal of selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A review

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most frequently used pharmaceuticals for human therapy, pet therapeutics, and veterinary feeds, enabling them to enter into water sources such as wastewater, soil and sediment, and seawater. The control of NSAIDs has led to the advent of the novel materials for treatment techniques. Herein, we review the occurrence, impact and toxicity of NSAIDs against aquatic microorganisms, plants and humans. Typical NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and aspirin were detected at high concentrations in wastewater up to 2,747,000 ng L-1. NSAIDs in water could cause genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, locomotive disorders, body deformations, organs damage, and photosynthetic corruption. Considering treatment methods, among adsorbents for removal of NSAIDs from water, metal-organic frameworks (10.7-638 mg g-1) and advanced porous carbons (7.4-400 mg g-1) were the most robust. Therefore, these carbon-based adsorbents showed promise in efficiency for the treatment of NSAIDs.

"Photochemical Surgery" of 1D Metal-Organic Frameworks with a Site-Selective Solubilization/Crystallization Strategy

One-dimensional (1D) hybrid MOFs are attractive if they consist of different MOF blocks with interconnected channels. However, the precision synthesis of such 1D multiblock MOFs with the desired block lengths and sequences remains a formidable challenge. Herein we propose the "photochemical surgery" method, which combines top-down and bottom-up approaches to enable the site-selective solubilization (removal)/crystallization (reconstruction) of 1D MOFs. We employed photoreactive MOFs, which were prepared by complexing either Cd2+ or Zn2+ with a mixture containing a photochromic bispyridyl ligand (PyDTEopen or PyDTZEopen) and an isophthalate (5-nitroisophthalate (nip2-) or 5-bromoisophthalate (bip2-)). These MOFs were obtained as high-aspect-ratio, needlelike, colorless crystals that bore 1D channels oriented parallel to the long needle axis. When photoreactive DTECdMOFNO2 ([Cd(nip)(PyDTEopen)(H2O)]n), for example, was immobilized at both ends with a metal alloy on a glass substrate and exposed to UV light through a photomask for 60 min in N,N-dimethylformamide/methanol (DMF/MeOH), the unmasked part was removed via solubilization to produce a 50 μm gap. The resulting specimen was immersed for 24 h at 25 °C in DMF/MeOH containing the necessary components for the construction of DTZECdMOFNO2 ([Cd(nip)(PyDTZEopen)(H2O)]n). Eventually, the gap was filled with DTZECdMOFNO2 to produce a triblock hybrid MOF (DTECdMOFNO2-DTZECdMOFNO2-DTECdMOFNO2). The result of a guest diffusion experiment confirmed that the newly formed DTZECdMOFNO2 block shared its 1D channels with the host DTECdMOFNO2 blocks. "Photochemical surgery" can be applied to synthesize 1D hybrid MOFs bearing unconventional sequences and morphologies, e.g., honeycomb- and inverted-honeycomb-patterned hybrids.

Controlled Delivery of 2-Mercapto 1-Methyl Imidazole by Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Inhibition of Copper Corrosion in NaCl Solution

In this paper, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was modified by N-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole to obtain a novel MOF called AMOF. Subsequently, AMOF served as a carrier for the delivery of 2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole (MMI) to inhibit the corrosion of Cu. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of AMOF and AMOF@MMI. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were adopted to value the capacity of the load and release of the AMOF, respectively. The mass ratio of loaded MMI molecules was 18.15%. In addition, the inhibition behavior of AMOF@MMI for Cu was evaluated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the AMOF loaded MMI successfully, and the released MMI could adsorb on the Cu surface and inhibit the Cu corrosion. The inhibition efficiency could reach 88.2%. The binding and interaction energies between the AMOF surface and the MMI were -16.41 kJ/mol and -20.27 kJ/mol.

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Metal-organic frameworks as photocatalysts in energetic and environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an exciting new class of porous materials with great potential for photocatalytic applications in the environmental and energy sectors. MOFs provide significant advantages over more traditional materials when used as photocatalysts due to their high surface area, adaptable topologies, and functional ability. In this article, we summarize current developments in the use of MOFs as photocatalysts for a variety of applications, such as CO2 reduction, water splitting, pollutant degradation, and hydrogen production. We discuss the fundamental properties of MOFs that make them ideal for photocatalytic applications, as well as strategies for improving their performance. The opportunities and challenges presented by this rapidly expanding field are also highlighted.

Recent Advances of Composite Nanomaterials for Antibiofilm Application

A biofilm is a microbial community formed by bacteria that adsorb on the surface of tissues or materials and is wrapped in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acids. As a protective barrier, the EPS can not only prevent the penetration of antibiotics and other antibacterial agents into the biofilm, but also protect the bacteria in the biofilm from the attacks of the human immune system, making it difficult to eradicate biofilm-related infections and posing a serious threat to public health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new and efficient antibiofilm drugs. Although natural enzymes (lysozyme, peroxidase, etc.) and antimicrobial peptides have excellent bactericidal activity, their low stability in the physiological environment and poor permeability in biofilms limit their application in antibiofilms. With the development of materials science, more and more nanomaterials are being designed to be utilized for antimicrobial and antibiofilm applications. Nanomaterials have great application prospects in antibiofilm because of their good biocompati-bility, unique physical and chemical properties, adjustable nanostructure, high permeability and non-proneness to induce bacterial resistance. In this review, with the application of composite nanomaterials in antibiofilms as the theme, we summarize the research progress of three types of composite nanomaterials, including organic composite materials, inorganic materials and organic-inorganic hybrid materials, used as antibiofilms with non-phototherapy and phototherapy modes of action. At the same time, the challenges and development directions of these composite nanomaterials in antibiofilm therapy are also discussed. It is expected we will provide new ideas for the design of safe and efficient antibiofilm materials.

Regulation of Bimetallic Coordination Centers in MOF Catalyst for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to valuable chemicals can alleviate the energy crisis, and solve the greenhouse effect. The key is to develop non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability. Herein, bimetallic metal organic frameworks (MOFs) materials (BiZn-MOF, BiSn-MOF, and BiIn-MOF) were constructed by coordinating the metals Zn, In, Sn, and Bi with the organic ligand 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid (H2atzc) through a rapid microwave synthesis approach. The coordination centers in bimetallic MOF catalyst were regulated to optimize the catalytic performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The optimized catalyst BiZn-MOF exhibited higher catalytic activity than those of Bi-MOF, BiSn-MOF, and BiIn-MOF. BiZn-MOF exhibited a higher selectivity for formate production with a Faradic efficiency (FE = 92%) at a potential of -0.9 V (vs. RHE, reversible hydrogen electrode) with a current density of 13 mA cm-2. The current density maintained continuous electrolysis for 13 h. The electrochemical conversion of CO2 to formate mainly follows the *OCHO pathway. The good catalytic performance of BiZn-MOF may be attributed to the Bi-Zn bimetallic coordination centers in the MOF, which can reduce the binding energies of the reaction intermediates by tuning the electronic structure and atomic arrangement. This study provides a feasible strategy for performance optimization of bismuth-based catalysts.

Hollow multishelled heterostructures with enhanced performance for laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry based metabolic diagnosis

High-performance metabolic diagnosis-based laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) improves the precision diagnosis of diseases and subsequent treatment. Inorganic matrices are promising for the detection of metabolites by LDI-MS, while the structure and component impacts of the matrices on the LDI process are still under investigation. Here, we designed a multiple-shelled ZnMn2O4/(Co, Mn)(Co, Mn)2O4 (ZMO/CMO) as the matrix from calcined MOF-on-MOF for detecting metabolites in LDI-MS and clarified the synergistic impacts of multiple-shells and the heterostructure on LDI efficiency. The ZMO/CMO heterostructure allowed 3-5 fold signal enhancement compared with ZMO and CMO with the same morphology. Furthermore, the ZMO/CMO heterostructure with a triple-shelled hollow structure displayed a 3-fold signal enhancement compared to its nanoparticle counterpart. Taken together, the triple-shelled hollow ZMO/CMO exhibits 102-fold signal enhancement compared to the commercial matrix products (e.g., DHB and DHAP), allowing for sensitive metabolic profiling in bio-detection. We directly extracted metabolic patterns by the optimized triple-shelled hollow ZMO/CMO particle-assisted LDI-MS within 1 s using 100 nL of serum and used machine learning as the readout to distinguish hepatocellular carcinoma from healthy controls with the area under the curve value of 0.984. Our approach guides us in matrix design for LDI-MS metabolic analysis and drives the development of a nanomaterial-based LDI-MS platform toward precision diagnosis.

Atomically Fe-anchored MOF-on-MOF nanozyme with differential signal amplification for ultrasensitive cathodic electrochemiluminescence immunoassay

The successful application of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) in immunoassays for clinical diagnosis requires stable electrodes and high-efficient ECL signal amplification strategies. Herein, the authors discovered a new class of atomically dispersed peroxidase-like nanozymes with multiple active sites (CoNi-MOF@PCN-224/Fe), which significantly improved the catalytic performance and uncovered the underlying mechanism. Experimental studies and theoretical calculation results revealed that the nanozyme introduced a Fenton-like reaction into the catalytic system and the crucial synergistic effects of definite active moieties endow CoNi-MOF@PCN-224/Fe strong electron-withdrawing effect and low thermodynamic activation energy toward H2O2. Benefiting from the high peroxidase-like activity of the hybrid system, the resultant ECL electrode exhibited superior catalytic activity in the luminol-H2O2 system and resulted in an ≈17-fold increase in the ECL intensity. In addition, plasmonic Ag/Au core-satellite nanocubes (Ag/AuNCs) were designed as high-efficient co-reactant quenchers to improve the performance of the ECL immunoassay. On the basis of the differential signal amplification strategy (DSAS) proposed, the immunoassay displayed superior detection ability, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.13 pg mL-1 for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The designed atomically anchored MOF-on-MOF nanozyme and DSAS strategy provides more possibilities for the ultrasensitive detection of disease markers in clinical diagnosis.

Recent advances on surface mounted metal-organic frameworks for energy storage and conversion applications: Trends, challenges, and opportunities

Establishing green and reliable energy resources is very important to counteract the carbon footprints and negative impact of non-renewable energy resources. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous material finding numerous applications due to their exceptional qualities, such as high surface area, low density, superior structural flexibility, and stability. Recently, increased attention has been paid to surface mounted MOFs (SURMOFs), which is nothing but thin film of MOF, as a new category in nanotechnology having unique properties compared to bulk MOFs. With the advancement of material growth and synthesis technologies, the fine tunability of film thickness, consistency, size, and geometry with a wide range of MOF complexes is possible. In this review, we recapitulate various synthesis approaches of SURMOFs including epitaxial synthesis approach, direct solvothermal method, Langmuir-Blodgett LBL deposition, Inkjet printing technique and others and then correlated the synthesis-structure-property relationship in terms of energy storage and conversion applications. Further the critical assessment and current problems of SURMOFs have been briefly discussed to explore the future opportunities in SURMOFs for energy storage and conversion applications.
