Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this review is to map the available evidence regarding the scope of child life specialist practice and utilization. INTRODUCTION Child life specialists provide developmentally appropriate and emotion-focused supportive interventions that aim to build coping skills, enhance resilience, and mitigate traumatic experiences during health care encounters. Evidence of the care provided by a child life specialist is spread throughout health care literature. It is an emerging field that is aligned with a heightened focus on mental health and emotional safety. Evidence for the efficacy of child life specialists continues to grow. INCLUSION CRITERIA Mapping the current evidence will capture the breadth of services provided by child life specialists. This scoping review will consider all evidence that reports on services provided by child life specialists, including across all quantitative and qualitative study designs, systematic reviews, and scoping reviews. The review will also include child life specialist workforce studies, such as child life specialist utilization, geographic availability, multidisciplinary team integration, and clinician-focused research. Case studies or narrative experiences outside of a qualitative research methodology, descriptions of program implementation, educational surveys, and quality improvement projects will be excluded from the scoping review. METHODS JBI methodology for scoping reviews will guide the review process. Literature published from 1980 to the present will be included. Databases to be searched include PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. The search for unpublished evidence will include Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Extracted data will be presented in tabular format with accompanying narrative summary.

Abstract
Development, whether motor, language, social, or spiritual, is the functional expression of complex brain processes throughout one's life span, the foundations of which are laid in childhood. The effects of cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical procedures on early brain development have been measured using neuroimaging and developmental assessment tools. We propose that spiritual development may be substantially affected in children with oncological diseases that impact underlying brain processes. By drawing connections between science, spirituality, and medicine, we can better address the spiritual needs of children as they cope with oncological diseases, by mitigating emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms and improving outcomes.

Abstract
This article illustrates the growth and development of the profession of child life within the last 25 years through a literature review of child life services in ambulatory settings. We reviewed all literature chronicling child life services in ambulatory settings published between January 1993 and December 2018 in three major databases, synthesizing common themes across the literature. Over the last 25 years, growth has occurred in the provision of child life interventions in outpatient settings and more publications are being produced. In outpatient settings, procedural support interventions have been written about the most, with much of this literature coming after 2010. [Pediatr Ann. 2020;49(11):e491-e498.].

Abstract
Children with central nervous system (CNS) malignancies often suffer from high symptom burden and risk of death. Pediatric palliative care is a medical specialty, provided by an interdisciplinary team, which focuses on enhancing quality of life and minimizing suffering for children with life-threatening or life-limiting disease, and their families. Primary palliative care skills, which include basic symptom management, facilitation of goals-of-care discussions, and transition to hospice, can and should be developed by all providers of neuro-oncology care. This chapter will review the fundamentals of providing primary pediatric palliative care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Palliative care for children is becoming an important subspecialty of healthcare. Although concurrent administration of curative and palliative care is recommended, timely referral to pediatric palliative care (PPC) services remains problematic. This literature review aims to identify barriers and recommendations for proper implementation of palliative care for children through the looking glass of PPC guidelines. METHOD To identify studies on PPC guidelines, five databases were searched systematically between 1960 and 2015: Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, the Web of Science, and CINAHL. No restrictions were placed on the type of methodology employed in the studies. RESULTS Concerning barriers, most of the papers focused on gaps within medical practice and the lack of evidence-based research. Common recommendations therefore included: training and education of healthcare staff, formation of a multidisciplinary PPC team, research on the benefits of PPC, and raising awareness about PPC. A small number of publications reported on the absence of clear guidance in PPC documents regarding bereavement care, as well as on the difficulties and challenges involved in multidisciplinary care teams. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Our results indicate that a critical assessment of both the research guidelines and medical practice is required in order to promote timely implementation of PPC for pediatric patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer treatment can have profound effects on the growth and development of pediatric patients. Different models of psychosocial development and behavioral treatment approaches aid children receiving medical treatment. Providing education, anticipatory guidance, and individualized support to child and their families is a psychosocial standard. OBJECTIVE Clarify the different models of psychosocial development and applicable psychosocial interventions to better prepare and tailor cancer treatment to pediatric patients. METHODS Authors reviewed existing evidenced-based literature in oncology, psychology, developmental, and psychiatric while drawing on case examples and expert knowledge to illustrate the impact of cancer treatment on pediatric patients, analyze developmentally individualized needs, and describe facilitative interventions. RESULT Pediatric patients of all ages cope and adjust better to all phases of treatment when their care is delivered in a developmentally-informed and psychosocially thoughtful way. CONCLUSION Providers can comprehensively prepare their patients and families for treatment better by utilizing a psychosocially- and developmentally-informed framework while meeting individualized unique needs of patients. An integrated multidisciplinary psychosocial support team is facilitative in anticipating and meeting the needs of pediatric cancer patients and has recently become a psychosocial standard of care.

Abstract
Medical providers are trained to investigate, diagnose, and treat cancer. Their primary goal is to maximize the chances of curing the patient, with less training provided on palliative care concepts and the unique developmental needs inherent in this population. Early, systematic integration of palliative care into standard oncology practice represents a valuable, imperative approach to improving the overall cancer experience for adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The importance of competent, confident, and compassionate providers for AYAs warrants the development of effective educational strategies for teaching AYA palliative care. Just as palliative care should be integrated early in the disease trajectory of AYA patients, palliative care training should be integrated early in professional development of trainees. As the AYA age spectrum represents sequential transitions through developmental stages, trainees experience changes in their learning needs during their progression through sequential phases of training. This article reviews unique epidemiologic, developmental, and psychosocial factors that make the provision of palliative care especially challenging in AYAs. A conceptual framework is provided for AYA palliative care education. Critical instructional strategies including experiential learning, group didactic opportunity, shared learning among care disciplines, bereaved family members as educators, and online learning are reviewed. Educational issues for provider training are addressed from the perspective of the trainer, trainee, and AYA. Goals and objectives for an AYA palliative care cancer rotation are presented. Guidance is also provided on ways to support an AYA's quality of life as end of life nears.

Abstract
Young adulthood is a time of immense growth and possibilities. As a result, it is also a time when serious illness can have profound effects. This review examines the current data pertinent to young adult palliative care and discusses the challenges and opportunities where palliative medicine can enhance the care provided to this growing and vulnerable population. From the data, 2 primary themes emerged (1) ongoing young adult development not only generates unique biologic disease burdens and clinical treatment options but also requires frequent assessment and promotion and (2) binary health care systems often leave young adults without access to developmentally appropriate health care. Given its interdisciplinary approach, palliative care is uniquely poised to address the challenges known to caring for the seriously ill young adult.

Abstract
Pediatric palliative care at the end-of-life is focused on ensuring the best possible quality of life for patients with life-threatening illness and their families. To achieve this goal, important needs include: engaging with patients and families; improving communication and relationships; relieving pain and other symptoms, whether physical, psychosocial, or spiritual; establishing continuity and consistency of care across different settings; considering patients and families in the decision-making process about services and treatment choices to the fullest possible and desired degree; being sensitive to culturally diverse beliefs and values about death and dying; and responding to suffering, bereavement, and providing staff support. Any effort to improve quality of palliative and end-of-life care in pediatric oncology must be accompanied by an educational strategy to enhance the level of competence among health care professionals with regard to palliative care and end-of-life management skills as well as understanding of individualized care planning and coordination processes.

Abstract
Taking care of a child or an adolescent in palliative stage is a testing work for health professionals in paediatric onco-hematology. The communication with the child at the end of life and his family is delicate but however essential to ensure quality cares while supporting trust. The continuation of a genuine relation and a regular information concerning the child's health help the parents to progressively understand the lack of possible cure and the future death of their child. This anticipation also allows to possibly discuss about conditions and place of death of the ill child or adolescent. The child or adolescent himself at the end of life can also feel the need for speaking about his situation. It is then for the adult, parent or health professional, to share with him his questionings and his possible worries in order to reduce his loneliness and his fears. To let be guided by the child allows to respect his progression and his wish to know more about it or not. Finally a support must also be offered for the siblings.

Abstract
O estudo teve por objetivo descrever os antecedentes, atributos e conseqüências do conceito de morte digna da criança. Utilizou-se a estratégia de análise de conceito para avaliar os 40 artigos, tendo como foco publicações nas áreas médica e de enfermagem, que estudaram ou focalizaram a morte digna da criança. Os atributos do conceito de morte digna da criança incluem: qualidade de vida, cuidado centrado na criança e na família, conhecimento específico sobre cuidados paliativos, decisão compartilhada, alívio do sofrimento da criança, comunicação clara, relacionamento de ajuda e ambiente acolhedor. Poucos artigos trazem a definição de morte digna da criança e, quando isso ocorre, essa definição é vaga e, muitas vezes, ambígua entre os vários autores. Esse aspecto indica que o conceito ainda não é consistentemente definido, demandando estudos de sua manifestação na prática clínica, contribuindo com os cuidados no final da vida em pediatria.

Abstract
Health care communication is a skill that is critical to safe and effective medical practice; it can and must be taught. Communication skill influences patient disclosure, treatment adherence and outcome, adaptation to illness, and bereavement. This article provides a review of the evidence regarding clinical communication in the pediatric setting, covering the spectrum from outpatient primary care consultation to death notification, and provides practical suggestions to improve communication with patients and families, enabling more effective, efficient, and empathic pediatric health care.

Abstract
Most parents of children with cancer have dual primary goals: a primary cancer-directed goal of cure and a primary comfort-related goal of lessening suffering. Early introduction of palliative care principles and practices into their child's treatment is respectful and supportive of these goals. The Individualized Care Planning and Coordination Model is designed to integrate palliative care principles and practices into the ongoing care of children with cancer. Application of the model helps clinicians to generate a comprehensive individualized care plan that is implemented through Individualized Care Coordination processes as detailed here. Clinicians' strong desire to provide compassionate, competent, and sensitive care to the seriously ill child and the child's family can be effectively translated into clinical practice through these processes.
