Quicklime-induced changes of soil properties: Implications for enhanced remediation of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated soils via mechanical soil aeration

Effect of liming on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons leaching from hydrocarbon-contaminated tectogenic industriosol

Soil stabilization/solidification is commonly employed remediation method for contaminated soils. Until now, limited attention has been given to the application of quicklime in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil. We treated a tectogenic industriosol spiked with 50 mg kg-1 of four PAHs (12.5 mg kg-1 each of fluorene (FLU), phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLT) and pyrene (PYR)) using three different liming agents at 1% (w:w): quicklime (CaO), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) and carbonate calcium (CaCO3). All treated samples were leached in water at a solid-liquid ratio of 10, with subsequent analysis of leached soil and leachates for PAHs content. Results revealed that the addition of liming agents led to a reduction in FLU and PHE concentrations in treated soil by 6.81 ± 2.47% and 28.88 ± 4.18%, respectively, compared to a not-treated sol. However, no significant impact was observed on the 4-cycles PAHs (FLT and PYR). The addition of liming agents also significantly decreased the amount of PAHs in the leachate, by 100% for FLU and PHE, and by 74.9 ± 17.5% and 72.3 ± 34.8%, for FLT and PYR, respectively, compared to not limed soil. Among the liming agents, quicklime was the most effective in reducing the amount of 4 cycles PAHs in the leachate. Various mechanisms, such as encapsulation, volatilization and oxidation could contribute to this observed reduction. Quicklime treatment at a concentration of 1% w:w in PAHs-contaminated soil emerges as a promising technique to effectively reduce PAHs concentration in soils and mitigate PAHs mobility through leaching. This study also sheds light on the possibility to limit CO2 emissions and resources exploitation to assure the remediation process, thereby enhancing its overall environmental sustainability.

Determining the soil odor control area: A case study of an abandoned organophosphorus pesticide factory in China

Currently, soil odor-active substance screening and evaluation methods for contaminated sites are underdeveloped, with unclear treatment objectives and areas. Consequently, some sites suffer from odor issues during and even after remediation. This study focused on an organophosphorus pesticide factory site in Guangdong Province, China. It established a method of determining the odorant control area using a comprehensive approach combining instrumental and olfactory soil sample analyses. The main odor-active substances identified were ethylbenzene, phenol, m, p-xylene, styrene, toluene, and o-xylene, with odorant control values (the limit of odor-active substance contents) of 35.2, 28.1, 8.0, 11.3, 40.2 and 89.3 mg/kg respectively. Instrumental analysis of soil samples revealed 11 sampling points where the main odor-causing substances exceeded standard levels. Among the substances, ethylbenzene (1.48E+04 mg/kg) had the highest content, exceeding the limit up to 421-fold. Olfactory analysis indicated 14 sampling points with odor intensity surpassing the standard (OI > 2). Based on the instrumental analysis results and the odorant control value, the initial estimated odor control area (area with the risk of odor nuisance) was 5.64E+03 m2. Incorporating the olfactory analysis findings, the control area was adjusted by 1.25E+03 m2, leading to a final calculated soil odor control area of 6.89E+03 m2 for the study site. The comprehensive approach to analyzing soil samples for odor control can help evaluate the extent of soil odor pollution in contaminated sites and provide a scientific basis for effectively removing and managing odor-causing substances in soil.

Upgradation of sludge deep dewatering conditioners through persulfate activated by ferrous: Compatibility with sludge incineration, dewatering mechanism, ecological risks elimination and carbon emission performance

Serious loss of organic substances and notable release of refractory intracellular organics and cell-free antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) caused by cell lysis are found when quick lime, FeCl₃, and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) were used as sludge conditioners, which is not feasible to sludge separate incineration and increases ecological risks. Therefore, persulfate oxidation through ferrous (Fe²⁺-Na₂S₂O₈) activation was applied for the upgradation of sludge conditioner in China, the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and capillary suction time (CST) significantly decreased and the removed water increased from 40% to 54%, implying that the persulfate activated by ferrous (PAF) conditioner presents good performance in sludge dewatering. Organic matter content and heating value of sludge merely decreased, and Cl^- content in sludge simultaneously decreased with the use of the PAF conditioner, thereby effectively reducing the corrosion risk to the incinerator and showing good compatibility with sludge separate incineration. In accordance with ferrous activation, sulfate radical plays an important role in sludge dewatering process because remarkable decrease in polysaccharides and protein contents from tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) was discovered. Based on flow cytometry analysis, slight cell lysis presented better filtrate quality by the use of PAF conditioner, 49.3% of refractory intracellular organics was removed and the respective ermB, tetW and blaTEM decreased by factors of 37.3%, 54.5% and 63.6% due to the strong oxidizing property of sulfate radical. The intensive decrease in refractory intracellular organics and cell-free ARGs will reduce the ecological risks. The total carbon emission significantly decreases to 1771.1 kgCO₂/tDS when PAF conditioner was employed, which is beneficial to the upgradation of sludge deep dewatering conditioners.

Quicklime and Superphosphate Alleviating Apple Replant Disease by Improving Acidified Soil

A two-year field experiment was carried out in order to study the effect of different soil modifiers on alleviating apple replant disease (ARD) in the apple orchards. Four treatments were as follows: replanted apple orchard soil (CK), replanted apple orchard soil treated with quicklime 1.0 g·kg^-1 (T1), replanted apple orchard soil treated with 1.0 g·kg^-1 quicklime and 1.0 g·kg^-1 superphosphate (T2), and replanted apple orchard soil treated with 1.0 g·kg^-1 plant ash (T3). Soil pH, plant biomass, soil bacteria, soil fungi, Fusarium oxysporum, soil enzymes, plant chlorophyll, and photosynthetic parameters were measured to detect the improvement effects of different soil amendments on acidified soil and to alleviate the ARD. The three treatments stably raised the pH of acidified soil and improved the conditions of the plant rhizosphere environment. Compared with the control, T1, T2, and T3 treatments significantly increased growth and plant biomass indexes, such as plant height and ground diameter, as well as photosynthetic parameters. Among the three treatments, T2 had the strongest effects. In July 2018 and July 2019, the number of bacteria was 151.3 and 190.5% higher in T2-treated soil than in control soil, and the number of soil fungi was 53.6 and 53.3% lower. In 2018 and 2019, the copy number of Fusarium solani was 63.6 and 58.6% lower and that of F. oxysporum was 51.8 and 55.7% lower. The T1, T2, and T3 treatments significantly increased soil enzyme activity and leaf chlorophyll content, and their effects were generally ranked T2 > T1 > T3. In conclusion, a combination of 1.0 g·kg^-1 quicklime and 1.0 g·kg^-1 superphosphate added to acidified replant soil increased the soil pH, improved the soil environment, increased the number of bacteria, reduced the number of fungi, increased soil enzyme activity, and improved plant photosynthetic capacity, thereby promoting the growth of replanted seedlings and effectively reducing ARD.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of VOC-contaminated soil preparation based on AHP-CRITIC-TOPSIS model

Currently, several methods have been adopted for the laboratory preparation of artificial volatile organic compound (VOC) contaminated soils (VCSs). However, it remains unclear whether the prepared contaminated soils are homogenous. In this study, two representative VOCs, toluene and perchloroethylene, were separately mixed with a kaolin-based soil using six preparation methods. Thereafter, the homogeneity and recovery of the contaminated kaolin prepared using these methods were determined and analyzed. The six procedures were quantitatively assessed according to the comprehensive evaluation mathematical model (AHP-CRITIC-TOPSIS), and the final score order of the different procedures was: A > C > E > B > F > D. Additionally, the qualitative evaluation of the procedures was performed based on the phase transformation and mass transfer during the mixing processes. Based on these discussions, method A, which was considered to be optimal, was then adopted for further investigations with various natural soils. The results showed that this optimal method could be applied to natural soils and revealed that the adsorption-related characteristics of natural soils, including total organic carbon, specific surface area, pore volume, pH, plastic limit, particle size, and mineral composition, influenced the homogeneity and recovery through mass transfer. In addition, it was also observed that the chemical properties of VOCs, including molecular structure, vapor pressure, and the octanol/water partition coefficient, could also affect the effectiveness of sample recovery. Through this study, researchers can prepare VCSs with excellent homogeneity and low loss rates to conduct standardized tests for technology development.

An insight into the current oil spills and on-site bioremediation approaches to contaminated sites in Nigeria

Land oil spills in Nigeria have a long history of contaminating the soil, groundwater, vegetation, and streams with spill extension being the primary of numerous ordeals. These have left the host communities of oil fields and pipelines in crucial need of soil rehabilitation. Thus, this review provides insights into the current state of land oil spills and the effectiveness of on-site remediation approaches across communities. A total of 44 incidents of land oil spills of ≥ 500 bbl, amounting to 53,631 bbl between 2011 and 2019, was recorded by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, which primarily attributed to 83% of the total sabotage. Over 73% of the 53,631 bbl spills were unrecovered from the spill areas, which had deleterious impacts on farmlands, fishponds, rivers, and residential areas. Remediation by enhanced natural attenuation (RENA) is a feasible technique for restoring petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated sites, but it might be ineffective when limited to tiling, windrows, and fertilizer applications due to the presence of non-biodegradable residues and contaminants beyond the aeration depth. However, bioremediation techniques ranging from non-supplemented in-situ and fertilizer supplemented in-situ to mixed in-situ and ex-situ bio-cells supplemented RENA are feasible approaches for spill sites. However, challenging limitations with regard to RENA application failures in the region include delayed responses to spill emergency, large amounts of un-recovered spilled oil, and un-implemented legislative guidelines for spill cleanup. Nevertheless, the temperature, moisture, nutrient, oxygen, and pH of the soil are essential parameters to be considered when implementing a landfarming remediation approach.

Photoreductive degradation of CCl4 by UV-Na2SO3: influence of various factors, mechanism and application

Due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of Cl atom in CCl₄, CCl₄ could not readily be degraded by oxidation process. In the present study, aqueous electron (e_aq ^-), a powerful reducing agent generated in UV-Na₂SO₃ system, was applied to reductively degradation of CCl₄. The effects of several crucial factors (e.g. Na₂SO₃ concentration, solution pH, inorganic ions and NOM) on CCl₄ degradation as well as degradation mechanism and pathway were systematically investigated. Results indicated that CCl₄ was efficiently degraded in UV-Na₂SO₃ system and the process could be well described by pseudo-first order kinetic model. The degradation rate increased with the elevated Na₂SO₃ concentration (0-10 mmol/L) and solution pH (6.0-8.0), while remained approximately constant in alkaline conditions (pH = 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0). Nevertheless, O₂, inorganic ions and NOM exerted a negative effect on CCl₄ degradation and the removal efficiency of CCl₄ in groundwater was only 31.7%. Mechanistic study implied that degradation of CCl₄ was primarily induced by e_aq ^-. CCl₄ (10 mg/L) was almost completely dechlorinated within 60 min and the predominant intermediate products were CHCl₃, C₂Cl₄ and C₂HCl₃. CHCl₃ and CH₂Cl₂ were also rapidly degraded in the UV-Na₂SO₃ system.

Partitioning, leachability, and speciation of chromium in the size-fractions of soil contaminated by chromate production

Soil particle size significantly affects the distribution and migration of chromium (Cr) in soil. Limited studies have investigated the impact of soil particle size on Cr partitioning at chromate contaminated sites. In this study, the physicochemical properties of coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand, and silt-clay were analyzed. And the particle size effects on partitioning, leachability, and bioaccessibility of total Cr and Cr(VI) were determined. The results showed the distribution factor (DF) of Cr(VI) in the coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand, and silt-clay fractions were 0.70, 0.79, 1.35, and 1.60, respectively. The total Cr DF values also had the similar result. The leached concentrations of total Cr and Cr(VI) in silt-clay (562.89 mg/L and 551.71 mg/L) was higher than in coarse sand (238.55 mg/L and 228.68 mg/L) fraction. The bioaccessibility of total Cr and Cr(VI) in silt-clay (77.72% and 88.58%) was higher than in fine sand (60.72% and 79.55%) fraction. The total Cr proportion of the exchangeable fraction (45.92%-73.67%) was relatively high in the four soil particle size fractions and gradually increased as soil particle size decreased. These implied that finer soil particles are more capable of enriching, mobilizing, and bioaccessibility of Cr and Cr(VI) than the coarse particles, which was related to the higher organic matter, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and clay components in smaller particles. The results suggested that higher environmental risk occurred in the finer fraction than in the coarser fraction for the chromate production contaminated soil.

In silico toxicity evaluation of dioxins using structure-activity relationship (SAR) and two-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (2D-QSAR)

Prediction of pEC₅₀ values of dioxins binding with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is of great significance for exploring how dioxins induce toxicity in human body and evaluating their environmental behaviors and risks. To reveal the factors that influence the toxicity of dioxins, provide more accurate mathematical models for predicting the pEC₅₀ values of dioxins, and supplement the toxicity database of persistent organic pollutants, qualitative structure-activity relationship (SAR) and two-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (2D-QSAR) were used in this study. The research objects in this study were 60 organic compounds with pEC₅₀ values and 162 compounds without pEC₅₀ values, which included polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs). The qualitative structure-activity relationship (SAR) was performed first and concluded that halogen substitutions at any of the 2, 3, 7, and 8 sites increased the pEC₅₀ value of the compound. Moreover, two-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (2D-QSAR) models were established by employing multiple linear regression (MLR) method and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm to investigate the factors affecting the pEC₅₀ values of dioxins molecules. MLR was used to establish the well-understood linear model and ANN was used to establish a more accurate non-linear model. Both models have good fitting, robustness, and predictive ability. Importantly, the ability of dioxins binding to AhR is mainly determined by molecular descriptors including E1m, SM09_AEA (dm), RDF065u, F05 [Cl-Cl], and Neoplastic-80. In addition, the pEC₅₀ values of the 162 dioxins without toxicity data were predicted by MLR and ANN models, respectively.

Growth, biochemical response and nutritional status of Angico-Vermelho (Parapiptadenia rigida (Bentham) Brenan) under the application of soil amendment in Cu-contaminated soil

Forest species Angico-Vermelho (Parapiptadenia rigida (Bentham) Brenan) is an alternative for the revegetation of areas contaminated with high levels of heavy metals such as copper (Cu). However, excess Cu may cause toxicity to plants, which is why the use of soil amendments can facilitate cultivation by reducing the availability of Cu in the soil. The aim of this study was to assess how the use of amendment can contribute to growth and nutritional status as well as reduce oxidative stress in Angico-Vermelho grown in Cu-contaminated soil. Samples of a Typic Hapludalf soil containing high Cu content were used for the application of four amendments (limestone, organic compost, Ca silicate and zeolite), in addition to a control treatment. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, with four replicates. The use of amendments decreased Cu content available in soil and contributed to improve both plant nutritional status and its antioxidant response expressed by enzymatic activity. The application of the amendments, especially zeolite and Ca silicate, increased dry matter yield of Angico-Vermelho. Thus, the results presented here suggest that the use of amendments contributes to improving Cu-contaminated soils and favors revegetation with Angico-Vermelho.
