Potential phosphorus eutrophication mitigation strategy: Biochar carbon composition, thermal stability and pH influence phosphorus sorption

Biochar addition can negatively affect plant community performance when altering soil properties in saline-alkali wetlands

Biochar is a widely proposed solution for improving degraded soil in coastal wetland ecosystems. However, the impacts of biochar addition on the soil and plant communities in the wetland remains largely unknown. In this study, we conducted a greenhouse experiment using soil seed bank from a coastal saline-alkaline wetland. Three types of biochar, including Juglans regia biochar (JBC), Spartina alterniflora biochar (SBC) and Flaveria bidentis biochar (FBC), were added to the saline-alkaline soil at ratios of 1%, 3% and 5% (w/w). Our findings revealed that biochar addition significantly increased soil pH, and increased available potassium (AK) by 3.74% - 170.91%, while reduced soil salinity (expect for 3% SBC and 5%SBC) by 28.08% - 46.93%. Among the different biochar types, the application of 5% FBC was found to be the most effective in increasing nutrients and reducing salinity. Furthermore, biochar addition generally resulted in a decrease of 7.27% - 90.94% in species abundance, 17.26% - 61.21% in community height, 12.28% - 56.42% in stem diameter, 55.34% - 90.11% in total biomass and 29.22% - 78.55% in root tissue density (RTD). In particular, such negative effects was the worst in the SBC samples. However, 3% and 5% SBC increased specific root length (SRL) by 177.89% and 265.65%, and specific root surface area (SRSA) by 477.02% and 286.57%, respectively. The findings suggested that the plant community performance was primarily affected by soil pH, salinity and nutrients levels. Furthermore, biochar addition also influenced species diversity and functional diversity, ultimately affecting ecosystem stability. Therefore, it is important to consider the negative findings indirectly indicate the ecological risks associated with biochar addition in coastal salt-alkaline soils. Furthermore, Spartina alterniflora was needed to desalt before carbonization to prevent soil salinization when using S. alterniflora biochar, as it is a halophyte.

Sustainable adsorbent frameworks based on bio-resourced materials and biodegradable polymers in selective phosphate removal for waste-water remediation

Phosphorus to an optimum extent is an essential nutrient for all living organisms and its scarcity may cause food security, and environmental preservation issues vis-à-vis agroeconomic hurdles. Undesirably excess phosphorus intensifies the eutrophication problem in non-marine water bodies and disrupts the natural nutrient balance of the ecosystem. To overcome such dichotomy, biodegradable polymer-based adsorbents have emerged as a cost-effective and implementable approach in striking a "desired optimum-undesired excess" balance pertaining to phosphate in a sustainable manner. So far, the reports on adopting such adsorbent-approach for wastewater remediation remained largely scattered, unstructured, and poorly correlated. In this background, the contextual review comprehensively discusses the current state-of-the-art in utilizing biodegradable polymeric frameworks as an adsorbent system for phosphate removal and its efficient recovery from the aquatic ecosystem, while highlighting their characteristics-specific functional efficiency vis-à-vis easiness of synthetic and commercial viability. The overview further delves into the sources and environmental ramifications of excessive phosphorus in water bodies and associated mechanistic pathways of phosphorus removal via adsorption, precipitation, and membrane filtration enabled by biodegradable (natural and synthetic) polymeric substrates. Finally, functionality optimization, degradability tuning, and adsorption selectivity of biodegradable polymers are highlighted, while aiming to strike a balance in "removal-recovery-reuse" dynamics of phosphate. Thus, the current review not only paves the way for future exploration of biodegradable polymers in sustainable cost-effective adsorbents for phosphorus removal but also can serve as a guide for researchers dealing with this critical issue.

In-situ retention of nitrogen, phosphorus in agricultural drainage and soil nutrients by biochar at different temperatures and the effects on soil microbial response

This study conducted a two-year experiment to investigate the impacts of biochar with various temperatures (350 °C, 500 °C, and 650 °C), on the reduction of pollutants in agricultural runoff and the enhancement of soil fertility. The results showed that the biochar significantly reduced the concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in farmland runoff. Moreover, higher-temperature biochar demonstrated greater efficacy in decreasing pollutants in farmland drainage. Treatment with RB650 resulted in a reduction of the total nitrogen and total phosphorus output load by 29.31-30.67 % and 21.92-25.21 %, respectively, compared to RB350. Furthermore, biochar exhibited substantial enhancements in soil fertility. This was supported by heightened soil organic matter content, increased availability of nutrients, and a noteworthy (P < 0.05) upsurge in pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus content observed in the second year following the application of biochar. Biochar has the potential to enhance soil enzyme activity and affect microbial community composition, thereby facilitating nutrient cycling. The findings illustrated the regenerative and recyclable characteristics of biochar's adsorption activity throughout crop growth. This process enables sustained improvement in soil nutrient retention capacity and fertility. Thus, it emphasizes the potential of biochar as an in-situ model for nutrient retention and recycling, offering an effective approach to mitigate agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution and enhance soil fertility.

Magnesium activation affects the properties and phosphate sorption capacity of poultry litter biochar

Biochars with a high affinity for phosphorus (P) are promising soil amendments for reducing P in agricultural run-off. Poultry litter (PL) is an abundant biochar feedstock. However, PL-derived biochars are typically high in soluble P and therefore require chemical modification to become effective P sorbents. This study investigated the effect of magnesium (Mg) activation on extractable P (EP) and P sorption capacities of PL-derived biochars. Biochar was produced at 500-900 °C from PL activated with 0-1 M Mg. Three differentially aged PL feedstocks were evaluated (1-, 3-5-, and 7-9-year-old). Increased Mg activation level and pyrolysis temperature both resulted in EP reductions from the biochars. Specifically, biochars produced at temperatures ≥ 700 °C from PL activated with ≥ 0.25 M Mg had negligible EP. X-ray diffractograms indicated that increased Mg loading favored the formation of stable Mg3(PO4)2 phases while increasing temperature favored the formation of both Mg3(PO4)2 and Ca5(PO4)3OH. Maximum P sorption capacities (Pmax) of the biochars were estimated by fitting Langmuir isotherms to batch sorption data and ranged from 0.66-10.35 mg g-1. Average Pmax values were not affected by PL age or pyrolysis temperature; however, biochars produced from 1 M Mg-activated PL did have significantly higher average Pmax values (p < 0.05), likely due to a greater abundance of MgO. Overall, the results demonstrated that Mg activation is an effective strategy for producing PL-derived biochars with the potential ability to reduce P loading into environmentally sensitive ecosystems.

Potentially migrating and residual components of biochar: Effects on phosphorus adsorption performance and storage capacity of black soil

Biochar has great potential to increase the soil nutrient storage capacity. However, with aging, biochar gradually disintegrates and releases fractions with migration potential, resulting in unknown effects on soil nutrient regulation. Based on this problem, we used ultrasound to separate original biochar (TB) into potentially migrating biochar (DB) and residual biochar (RB). The elemental composition and pore characteristics of TB, DB and RB were analyzed. Different fractions of biochar were applied to black soil, and the kinetic model and isothermal adsorption models were used to explore the adsorption characteristics of different treatments. Then, the effects of initial pH and coexisting ions on adsorption were compared. The adsorption mechanism and potential leaching process of phosphorus in soil were investigated. The results showed that RB had higher O and H contents and was less stable than TB, while RB was more aromatic. The phosphorus adsorption capacity of different treatments was SRB (1.3318 mg g^-1) > STB (1.2873 mg g^-1) > SDB (1.3025 mg g^-1) > SCK (1.1905 mg g^-1). SRB had optimal phosphorus adsorption performance and storage capacity, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1.6741 mg g^-1 for the Langmuir isotherm, and it also showed excellent applicability in a pH gradient and with coexisting ions. The main adsorption mode of phosphorus by different treatments was monolayer chemisorption, related to electrostatic repulsion and oxygen-containing functional groups. DB was less effective in inhibiting soil phosphorus migration, with the cumulative leaching of SDB reaching 8.99 mg and the percentage of phosphorus in the 0-6 cm soil layer reaching only 15.42%. Overall, the results can help elucidate potential trends in the adsorption performance and migration process of soil phosphorus by biochar, and improve the comprehensive utilization efficiency of biochar.

Succession of biochar addition for soil amendment and contaminants remediation during co-composting: A state of art review

This paper aimed to highlight the succession of biochar addition for soil amendment and contaminants remediation during composting process. Biochar incorporated into the compost mixture promotes composting performance and enhances contaminants reduction. Co-composting with biochar for soil biota has been demonstrated via modified soil biological community abundance and diversity. On the other hand, adverse alterations to soil properties were noted, which had a negative impact on the communication of microbe-to-plant interactions within the rhizosphere. As a result, these changes influenced the competition between soilborne pathogens and beneficial soil microorganisms. Co-composting with biochar promoted the heavy metals (HMs) remediation efficiency in contaminated soils by around 66-95%. Notably, applying biochar during composting could improve nutrient retention and mitigate leaching. The adsorption of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus compounds by biochar can be applied to manage environmental contamination and presents an excellent opportunity to enhance soil quality. Additionally, the various specific functional groups and large specific surface areas of biochar allow for excellent adsorption of persistent pollutants (e.g., pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)) and emerging organic pollutants, such as microplastic, phthalate acid esters (PAEs) during co-composting. Finally, future perspectives, research gaps, and recommendations for further studies are highlighted, and potential opportunities are discussed.

Adsorptive removal of phosphorus from aqueous solutions using natural and modified coal solid wastes

An invaluable utilization approach for industrial wastes is to employ them as effective adsorbents for environmental pollutants. This study aimed to investigate the phosphorus (P) adsorption behavior of coal wastes and zeolite in three forms of pristine powder (CP and ZP), nanoparticles (CNP and ZNP), and Fe (III)-modified nanoparticles (MCNP and MZNP). The adsorbents were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The effects of pH, initial P concentration, and contact time were studied under batch mode. Results showed an optimum pH range of 2-6 for the P adsorption process. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm described the P adsorption data well. The P adsorption capacity of the studied adsorbents was enhanced after modifications. However, the coal-based modified adsorbents represented higher P adsorption performances rather than the zeolite ones. The maximum P adsorption capacity (Q_max) values were obtained as 0.36, 3.23, and 30.48 mg g^-1 for CP, CNP, and MCNP, and 0.80, 2.84, and 6.99 mg g^-1 for ZP, ZNP, and MZNP, respectively. The surface complexation, ligand exchange, and electrostatic attraction processes were identified as the main P adsorption mechanisms by the studied adsorbents.

Ocean acidification and warming significantly affect coastal eutrophication and organic pollution: A case study in the Bohai Sea

Most coastal ecosystems are faced with novel challenges associated with human activities and climate change such as ocean acidification, warming, eutrophication, and organic pollution. However, data on the independent or combined effects of ocean acidification and warming on coastal eutrophication and organic pollution at present are relatively limited. Here, we applied the generalized additive models (GAMs) to explore the dynamics of coastal eutrophication and organic pollution in response to future climate change in the Bohai Sea. The GAMs reflected the fact that acidification alone favors eutrophication and organic pollution, while warming alone inhibits these two variables. Differently, the interactions between acidification and warming in the future may further exacerbate the organic pollution but may mitigate the progress of eutrophication. These different responses of eutrophication and organic pollution to acidification and warming may be attributed to algae growth and microbial respiration, as well as some physical processes such as stratification.

Identifying biotic and abiotic processes of reversing biochar-induced soil phosphorus leaching through biochar modification with MgAl layered (hydr)oxides

Biochar (BC) as a increasing widely adopted soil amendments showed potential threat to soil P leaching, but the relevant mechanisms were not clear enough and relevant strategy should be proposed to address the P leaching induced by BC application. In this study, effects of ordinary corn straw BC, and a fabricated Mg/Al-LDHs modified biochar (LBC) on soil P availability, adsorption, fraction and mobility were compared and investigated by conducting the column and incubation experiments at biochar to soil rate of 1 %, 2 % and 4 % (w/w). Chemical sequential extraction methods and various solid-state method (i.e., three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (EEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron micrograph (SEM) and P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES)) were utilized to give deep insights into the P mobilization and immobilization mechanisms by respectively applying the BC and LBC. Results of incubation experiments showed that applying the LBC reduced the labile P with significant CaP transformation to Al-retained P, while ordinary BC promoted the Fe/Al-P transformation to labile dibasic calcium phosphate and monobasic calcium phosphate evidenced by the EEM analysis, in-situ XANES investigation and chemical sequential extraction methods. Results of phosphatase and microbial analyses indicated that the decreased labile P after 30 days' incubation and the mitigated P leaching in LBC treatment were dominantly ascribed to abiotic processes of inorganic P transformation and (de)sorption. This research gave deep insights into abiotic and biotic processes of ordinary biochar promoting soil P leaching, and important implications for applying engineered biochar in reducing P leaching and improving soil productivity.

Characterization of Microbial Communities and Naturally Occurring Radionuclides in Soilless Growth Media Amended with Different Concentrations of Biochar

Biochar, derived from the pyrolysis of plant materials has the potential to enhance plant growth in soilless media. Howevetar, little is known about the impact of biochar amendments to soilless growth media, microbial community composition, and fate of chemical constituents in the media. In this study, different concentrations of biochar were added to soilless media and microbial composition, and chemical constituents were analyzed using metagenomics and gamma spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Across treatments, carboxyl-C, phenolic-C, and aromatic-C were the main carbon sources that influenced microbial community composition. Flavobacterium (39.7%), was the predominantly bacteria genus, followed by Acidibacter (12.2%), Terrimonas (10.1%), Cytophaga (7.5%), Ferruginibacter (6.0%), Lacunisphaera (5.9%), Cellvibrio (5.8%), Opitutus (4.8%), Mucilaginibacter (4.0%) and Bryobacter (4.0%). Negative relationships were found between Cytophaga and 226Ra (r = −0.84, p = 0.0047), 40K (r = −0.82, p = 0.0069) and 137Cs (r = −0.93, p = 0.0002). Similarly, Mucilaginibacter was negatively correlated with 226Ra (r = −0.83, p = 0.0054) and 137Cs (r = −0.87, p = 0.0021). Overall, the data suggest that high % biochar amended samples have high radioactivity concentration levels. Some microorganisms have less presence in high radioactivity concentration levels.

Preparation of Fe-filled MOF-Al-based hydrogel for efficient reclaim of phosphate from wastewater and reusing as a slow-release fertilizer

In this study, a novel Fe-filled MOF-Al-based hydrogel (SA@Fe@MOF-Al) was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis. The SA@Fe@MOF-Al hydrogel bead was used as an adsorbent to adsorb H2PO4- from wastewater. The effects on adsorption were investigated, including pH and coexist ion. The adsorption reached equilibrium within 30 min. The maximum H2PO4- adsorption capacity of SA@Fe@MOF-Al was 103.09 mg g^-1 at 298K with pH 7.0. Meanwhile, thermodynamic results confirmed that adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption kinetics displayed that SA@Fe@MOF-Al adsorption process was suitable to the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir model. Moreover, the feasibility of reusing the P-laden carrier material as a slow-release fertilizer was determined. The study results indicated that the product demonstrated excellent slow-release and water-retention properties. Thus, it has potential applications in improving soil moisture content and reducing soil moisture evaporation rate.

Enhanced precipitation performance for treating high-phosphorus wastewater using novel magnetic seeds from coal fly ash

Magnetic coagulation is a promising approach for treating high phosphorous (high-P) wastewater by enhancing precipitation efficiency using magnetic particles. In this study, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly magnetic seed from coal fly ash (MS-CFA) was used as an alternative material for Fe₃O₄ magnetic seed (MS) coagulation. The potential effect of MS-CFA was explored to reduce the settling time and the dosage of coagulant aid of polyacrylamide (PAM) in treating high-phosphorous (high-P) simulated wastewater at 100 and 200 mg P/L. The physicochemical characteristics of MS-CFA were analysed through particle size distribution (20-100 μm), pore size distribution (14-30 nm), specific surface area (1.654 m²/g), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific gravity (4.2), and magnetic induction intensity (49.8 emu/g). The characteristics met the requirements as magnetic coagulation material. MS-CFA was combined with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) to improve phosphorous precipitation performance. The synergised magnetic coagulation effect using MS-CFA and PAM reduced the settling time of flocs to less than 1 min due to the high specific gravity. This represents a reduction of 90% of the settling time compared to the control using PAM alone (15 min) without MS-CFA. MS-CFA efficiently reduced PAM dosage by 83% and 87% for treating 100 and 200 mg P/L, respectively. The presence of PAM (1 mg/L for 100 mg P/L and 2 mg/L for 200 mg P/L) was imperative for binding the MS-CFA and flocs, hence increasing the particle size of the magnetic flocs. The characteristics of the magnetic flocs were analysed through microscopy, particle size distribution, zeta potential measurements, and magnetic induction intensity. The characteristics of the magnetic flocs confirmed that MS-CFA could be an alternative material for Fe₃O₄ as the magnetic seeds in the magnetic coagulation process for treating high-P wastewater.

Biochar production with amelioration of microwave-assisted pyrolysis: Current scenario, drawbacks and perspectives

In recent years, biomass has been reported to obtain a wide range of value-added products. Biochar can be obtained by heating biomass, which aids in carbon sinks, soil amendments, resource recovery, and water retention. Microwave technology stands out among various biomass heating technologies not only for its effectiveness in biomass pyrolysis for the production of biochar and biofuel but also for its speed, volumetrics, selectivity, and efficiency. The features of microwave-assisted biomass pyrolysis and biochar are briefly reviewed in this paper. An informative comparison has been drawn between microwave-assisted pyrolysis and conventional pyrolysis. It focuses mainly on technological and economic scenario of biochar production and environmental impacts of using biochar. This source of knowledge would aid in the exploration of new possibilities and scope for employing microwave-assisted pyrolysis technology to produce biochar.

Effective lead passivation in soil by bone char/CMC-stabilized FeS composite loading with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria

Bioremediation by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) has attracted extensive attentions due to its economical and eco-friendly properties for lead (Pb) passivation in soil. Herein, bone char (BC) supported biochemical composite (CFB₁-P) carrying advantages of BC, PSB, iron sulfide (FeS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was designed and applied to Pb passivation. The composite at a mass ratio of BC:CMC:FeS = 1:1:1 possessed high passivation efficiency (65.47%), and has been demonstrated to offer appropriate habitat environment for PSB to defend against Pb(II) toxicity, thus enhancing the phosphate-solubilizing amount of PSB to 140.72 mg/L for passivating Pb(II). Batch experiments showed that the CFB₁-P possessed excellent adsorption properties with maximal monolayer Pb(II) uptake of 452.99 mg/g during an extensive pH range of 2.0-6.0. Furthermore, by applying CFB₁-P dosage of 3% into Pb-contaminated soil, the labile Pb fractions were reduced from 29.05% to 6.47% after simulated remediation of 10 days, and converted into steady fractions. The CFB₁-P was demonstrated to achieve high Pb(II) passivation through combined functions of chemical precipitation, complexation, electrostatic attraction and biomineralization, accompanied by the formation of more stable crystal structures, for instance, Pb₅(PO₄)₃OH, Pb₃(PO₄)₂ and PbS. These results suggested CFB₁-P as a potential alternative for efficient remediation of Pb-contaminated soil.

Phosphorus and sulphates removal from wastewater using copper smelter slag washed with acid

Abstract

In this study, we present the performance of acid washed copper smelter slag for the adsorption of phosphates and sulphates from wastewater. The aim of the study was to investigate the removal of phosphates and sulphates from wastewater using acid washed copper smelter slag at batch scale by exploring influences of different variables. The leachate concentrations of copper, iron, manganese and lead released from the adsorbent were 1.8, 128.2, 0.32 and 0.20 mg L−1, respectively at pH 2. The point of zero charge was at pH 6.04, Pseudo-Second Order kinetic model described the adsorption process better with an R2 value of 0.99. The experimental maximum adsorption capacities for phosphates and sulphates were 0.51 and 0.24 mg g−1 media, respectively, and 0.96 mg P g−1 media at pH 12 and 0.39 mg g−1 media for sulphates at pH 2, respectively. The process was endothermic with temperature having insignificant impact during adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities for thermodynamic study were 0.103 ± 0.09 and 0.046 ± 0.004 mg g−1 media respectively, for PO43− P and SO42− at 60 °C. This study showed that acid washed copper smelter slag has an improved adsorption capacity for phosphate and sulphate ions but further investigations should be conducted to find ways of further improving the adsorbent performance.

Application of Modified Spent Mushroom Compost Biochar (SMCB/Fe) for Nitrate Removal from Aqueous Solution

The public is already aware that nitrate pollution caused by nutrient runoff from farms is harmful to aquatic life and human health, and there is an urgent need for a product/technology to solve this problem. A biochar adsorbent was synthesized and used to remove nitrate ions from aqueous media based on spent mushroom compost (SMC), pre-treated with iron (III) chloride hexahydrate and pyrolyzed at 600 °C. The surface properties and morphology of SMCB/Fe were investigated using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of main parameters such as the adsorbent dosages, pH of the solutions, contact times, and ion concentrations on the efficiency of nitrate removal was investigated. The validity of the experimental method was examined by the isothermal adsorption and kinetic adsorption models. The nitrate sorption kinetics were found to follow the pseudo-second-order model, with a higher determination coefficient (0.99) than the pseudo-first-order (0.86). The results showed that the maximum percentage of nitrate adsorption was achieved at equilibrium pH 5-7, after 120 min of contact time, and with an adsorbent dose of 2 g L-1. The highest nitrate adsorption capacity of the modified adsorbent was 19.88 mg g-1.

Effects of consecutive culture of Penaeus vannamei on phosphorus transformation and microbial community in sediment

Phosphorus (P) is highly related to water quality during shrimp culture. Recognizing P transformation in pond-based cultures is crucial for sustainable and healthy aquaculture. However, P transformation remains unclear in the sediment of Penaeus vannamei cultures, although commercial species have been pervasive worldwide. To determine P transformation, samples with different culture years were collected from Zhejiang province, China. Sequential chemical extraction was applied to reveal the composition of inorganic P, while phosphatase activity was used to evaluate the biomineralization of organic P. The results indicated that the consecutive culture of Penaeus vannamei promoted the dissolution potential of sedimentary P. This was attributed to anoxic iron reduction that increased the formation of loosely bound P and Fe (II)-P. However, this phenomenon was dominated by biomineralization, which transformed the organic P to inorganic P. The results suggested that consecutive culture changed the microbial community structure in the sediment as well as the gene functions. The Shannon Wiener index showed that increasing the culture duration significantly decreased the stability of the microbial community. Overall, this study suggests that long-term consecutive culture of Penaeus vannamei may increase the P release potential of the sediment, which increases the risk of pond eutrophication.

Historical changes of sedimentary P-binding forms and their ecological driving mechanism in a typical "grass-algae" eutrophic lake

With the transformation of lake ecosystem from "clear water" to "turbid water", the residual phosphorus (P) accumulated in sediments may slow down the process of aquatic ecological restoration, and the related mechanisms are complex and need to be better understood. In this study, high-resolution systematic investigation and analysis of P-binding forms in the sediments showed that Lake Dianchi, the largest plateau lake in Southwest China, was enriched with NaOH-rP, HCl-P and Res-P, but depleted in NH₄Cl-P, BD-P and NaOH-nrP. The BD-P, NaOH-nrP and NaOH-rP were the main contributors to potential P release from sediments, while the release potential of NH₄Cl-P was relatively weak (<1%). When the external P loading gradually decreased, the internal P loading of Lake Dianchi was estimated to be 522 mg P/(m²•a) in the past 30 years. The succession of "grass-algae" type in Lake Dianchi coincided with reduced absorption and transformation of potential mobile P and decreased accumulation of stable P, especially the Res-P. Meanwhile, the temporal variation of potential mobile P was a good predictor of ecological degradation and reduced ecosystem sustainability in Lake Dianchi.

Impact of biochar application on gas emissions from liquid pig manure storage

Biochars have been used to reduce gas emissions from manure composting practices and to recover nutrients from wastewater because of their effective sorption capacity. However, relatively less is known about the impacts of different alkaline biochars on the gas emissions from liquid manure. Materials including two commercial biochars prepared from walnut shell (WA) and coconut shell (CC), respectively, and coal (CO) were applied (with manure/biochar ratio of 20:1 in weight) to examine their influence on NH₃, CH₄, and N₂O emissions from liquid pig manure during a 68-d period in comparison with a control (CK, without biochars), and to investigate the evolution of the manure N mass balances and the changes in biochar properties during liquid manure storage to understand the characteristics of biochar. Compared with the CK, the application of WA, CC, and CO biochars increased the NH₃ emissions by 4.00, 3.87, and 1.23 times, respectively, the absorbed N content of the biochars was markedly lower than the enhanced gaseous losses through NH₃ emissions. Similarly, the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the manure with WA, CC, and CO biochar application were 6.28, 5.55, and 0.83 times greater than those observed with the CK, respectively, and were mainly attributed to the enhanced CH₄ emissions. The significant contribution (5%-12%) of indirect GHG emissions from the enhanced NH₃-N losses was also identified. The hypothesis for the enhanced gas emissions from liquid manure with biochar addition has been discussed in the present study; however, further investigation in the future is warranted.

Sustainable advances on phosphorus utilization in soil via addition of biochar and humic substances

The intervention of human in phosphorus pool seems to be a vicious circle. The rapid population growth leads to the global food shortage, which leads to the massive use of phosphate fertilizer and the continuous exploitation of phosphate rocks. With the massive loss and fixation of phosphate fertilizer in the soil, the unavailable phosphorus in the soil becomes superfluous, while the phosphate mineral resources turn to scarce. Interestingly, exogenous carbonaceous materials, notably, biochar and humic substances, have been widely used as soil conditioners in agricultural production up to date, among other actions to interfere with the balance between the different phosphate species, which offer effective roles for increasing soil available phosphorus. This article reviews the regulation mechanisms of biochar and humic substances on phosphorus availability and circulation, including improving soil physicochemical characteristics, regulating microbial community structure, and directly interacting with phosphorus to affect the fate of phosphorus in soil. Finally, the prospects for future research directions are made, and it is hoped that the review of this article can arouse people's attention to the current plight of agricultural production and provide some methods for improving the efficiency of phosphate fertilizer use in the future.

Kinetics of nutrients remediation from sugar industry effluent-treated substrate using Agaricus bisporus: mushroom yield and biochemical potentials

This study investigated the yield and biochemical potential of Agaricus bisporus mushroom cultivated on agricultural waste substrate supplemented with treated sugar industry effluent (SIE). Laboratory-scale experiments were performed for the cultivation of A. bisporus on a mixture of wheat straw and sugar cane bagasse moistened with different doses of borewell water (BWW) and treated SIE (0-100%). Besides this, the simultaneous effects of the SIE amendment on total Kjeldahl's nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (TP) contents of substrate and kinetics of their utilization by A. bisporus were studied. Results showed a relatively higher utilization of TKN (38.10 ± 1.60%) and TP (47.4 ± 6.44%) in a 25:75 ratio of BWW and SIE, respectively. The kinetics studies of TKN and TP utilization using Lineweaver-Burk models described the maximum specific utilization rates (V _max) of 0.165 and 0.125 mg·kg^-1·d^-1 and saturation points (K _m ) of 72.401 and 33.283 mg·kg^-1, respectively, which are in good agreement as indicated by R ² values (> 0.90). In addition, the maximum significant (P < 0.01) yield (159.31 ± 8.85 g·Kg^-1), biological efficiency (106.21 ± 3.84%), total phenols (3.03 ± 0.07 mg·g^-1), ascorbic acid (0.44 ± 0.03 mg·g^-1), and β-carotene (3.36 ± 0.05 μg·g^-1) of A. bisporus were observed using the same treatment. Therefore, this paper reported sustainable utilization of TKN and TP nutrients from SIE for A. bisporus mushroom cultivation.

Phosphate-lanthanum coated sewage sludge biochar improved the soil properties and growth of ryegrass in an alkaline soil

The reclamation of alkaline soils remains challenging while the application of biochar has been proposed as a viable measure to rehabilitate soil fertility. The objective of the current pot study was to evaluate the efficacy of various P-La modified sewage sludge biochars (SSBC, La-SSBC, SSBC-P, La-SSBC-P) on soil phosphate-retention and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) growth in an alkaline soil (excess CaCO3). The results revealed that germination percentage, plant dry biomass, plant height, and the total amount of P in the ryegrass leaves were significantly (P < 0.05) improved under La-SSBC-P treatment as compared to other treatments. La-SSBC-P treatment significantly altered the chemical characteristics of post-harvest alkaline soil, such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (SOM), limestone (CaCO3), phosphate, and lanthanum contents. In comparison to the SSBC treatment, soil available phosphorous (AP) contents under La-SSBC-P were enhanced by 6.7 times after loading biochar with P and La (La-SSBC-P). After the plantation of ryegrass, concentration of lanthanum in the soil was negligible. The contents of CaCO3 reduced by 76.2% after La-SSBC-P biochar treatment, compared to the cultivated control. This phenomenon clearly indicated that lanthanum was reduced due to the precipitation with limestone, which was proposed based on the data of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Overall, results showed that the P-loaded lanthanum decorated biochar (La-SSBC-P) could be used as a potential substitute for P-fertilizer under the experimental conditions. However, field experiments are required to confer the efficiency of La-SSBC-P as P fertilizer in different soils.

Facile Fabrication of Calcium-Doped Carbon for Efficient Phosphorus Adsorption

High phosphorus concentrations mainly result in environmental problems such as agricultural pollution and eutrophication, which have great negative influence on many natural water bodies. In this work, calcium lignosulfonate was employed to produce calcium-doped char at 400 and 800 °C. To compare the phosphorus adsorption behaviors of the two carbon materials, batch adsorption experiments were conducted in a phosphorus microenvironment. The factors including the initial solution pH, phosphorus concentration, and adsorbent amount were considered, and the main characteristics of calcium-doped chars before and after adsorption were assessed. The results revealed that the phosphorus removal processes fitted both the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order-kinetic models. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of the two adsorbents obtained at 400 and 800 °C toward phosphorus (50 °C) were 53.22 and 17.77 mg/g adsorbent, respectively. The former was rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, and it mainly served as a precipitant and a chelating agent, while the latter with a high surface area was dominant in P adsorption.

Small Floodplain Reservoirs in the Face of Climate Change—Sink or Source of Nutrients?

Despite various water protection measures, good water quality and reduction of nutrient loads seem very distant goals, largely due to limited knowledge of processes occurring in river valleys. Our study aimed at establishing the role of small floodplain reservoirs in the eutrophication processes, in the face of recent climate changes. The content of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds was determined in sediments and water of small floodplain reservoirs, (the Vistula River Valley, Poland) using spectrophotometric and Kjeldahl’s method. Nutrient loads in sediments were linked to the texture and total organic carbon content. Seasonal changes in water quality were strictly connected to changing weather conditions, flood and drought. The concentrations of PO43− and NO3− were found to rise after summer flooding. Increases in NH4+, total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were correlated with the surface water area reduction in the reservoirs, which during the year of the study was on average 62%. Therefore, small floodplain reservoirs could be considered simultaneously as sinks and sources of nutrients. On the one hand, they accumulate P and N compounds carried by the river during the flood. On the other hand, climate change cause that small floodplain reservoirs may be responsible for enhanced biomass production.

Effect of ferric chloride on phosphorus immobilization and speciation in Dianchi Lake sediments

Immobilization of phosphorus in lake sediments and control of internal-loading phosphorus release have become crucial aspects of eutrophication lake management. In this study, the immobilization efficiency of phosphorus by ferric chloride in Dianchi Lake sediments was investigated. In addition, effects of the dosage of ferric chloride and contact time on the release of phosphorus from sediments were investigated. Laboratory experiments revealed that ferric chloride can effectively inhibit the release of phosphorus from sediments. At a ferric chloride dosage of 10 mg/g, the total phosphorus concentration of the overlying water was reduced by ~87%. With the increase in the contact time, the amount of phosphorus immobilized by ferric chloride increased. To further evaluate the feasibility of ferric chloride for immobilising phosphorus in sediments, an amplification experiment with a water volume of 50 L was carried out. By the addition of 6 mg/g of ferric chloride, the total phosphorus concentration of the overlying water was still less than 0.01 mg/L after 100 days. At the same time, the phosphorus species in the sediment after treatment with ferric chloride were analyzed. Results revealed that ferric chloride mainly converts unstable exchangeable phosphorus (Ex-P), ferric phosphate (Fe-P) and organic phosphorus (Or-P) into more stable occluded phosphate (O-P), reducing the possible release of phosphorus from sediments. Practical applications of ferric chloride to control the release of phosphorus from Dianchi Lake sediments were discussed.

Phosphorous recovery from a novel recirculating aquaculture system followed by its sustainable reuse as a fertilizer

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for life that is introduced through feed in modern aquaculture-the fastest growing food production sector. P can also be a source of environmental contamination and eutrophication if mistreated. Fish assimilate only 20-40% of the applied P; the rest is released into the water. The goals of this research were to study the fate of P in a novel intensive near-zero discharge (<1%) recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). We also tested means to recover and reuse the removed P. Water, sludge and the microbial communities in the different treatment units of the system were analyzed. The treated sludge was tested as a potential substitute for P fertilization in a planter experiment. Of the applied P, 29.5% was recovered by fish, 69.8% was found in the fish sludge and 3.8% was released into the water as soluble reactive P. The P concentration in the fish tank remained stable, likely due to its uptake by denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms and its precipitation in the RAS's anaerobic reactor. Thus, only 1.5% of the applied P was discharged as effluent, and 69% recovered. The dominant minerals were from the apatite group, followed by the struvite family. Differences in mineral abundance between thermodynamic prediction and actual findings were most probably due to biomineralization by bacteria. Similar plant biomass was recorded for the commercial and digested-sludge fertilization treatments. Biological P removal and recovery from RAS was successfully studied and demonstrated.

Biochar and nitrogen application rates effect on phosphorus removal from a mixed grass sward irrigated with reclaimed wastewater

This 2-year (2017 and 2018) field study evaluated biochar and nitrogen application rates effect on herbage phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) removal from a mixed-grass sward of tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort] and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) irrigated with treated wastewater. Treatments used in this study carried out at the Main Station Field Laboratory, Reno, NV were three biochar application rates (0, 8.9, and 17.8 Mg/ha), and three N rates (0, 80, and 120 kg N/ha) arranged in a 3 × 3 factorial in a randomized complete block design experiment with four replications of each treatment combination. Responses were considered different P < 0.05. There was a linear increased in soil volumetric water content as biochar rate increased from 0 to 17.9 Mg/ha. However, biochar application rate did not affect the quantity of biomass produced, forage tissue P and N concentrations, P and N removal or interact with the other experimental variables of N rate and year to influence the response variables. There was, however, an N rate effect (P < 0.05) on biomass production and it was greater for the 80 and 120 kg N rate (average = 8.3 Mg DM/ha) relative to the 0 kg N/ha rate (6.0 Mg DM/ha). Further, cumulative P removal for the 80 and 120 kg N rate (average = 48.9 kg/ha) was greater than the 0 kg N/ha rate (38.1 kg/ha), and cumulative N removal was in the order 120 kg N/ha (321.1 kg/ha) > 80 kg N/ha (267.4 kg/ha) > 0 kg N/ha (187.8 kg/ha). There was a trend for a biochar × N rate interaction on soil P concentration and it tended to be greater for the combinations 8.9 and 17.8 Mg/ha biochar rates and 80 and 120 kg N/ha rates compared to the unamended control. Even though our study did not reveal a definitive effect of biochar on the major response parameters (biomass, tissue P and N concentrations) evaluated, the trend for a biochar × N rate interaction on soil P concentration offers hope that biochar-amended soils coupled with appropriate N fertilization will be effective in P retention on agricultural landscapes irrigated with treated wastewater.

Biochar phosphorus fertilizer effects on soil phosphorus availability

Biochar is a potential material for making slow-releasing phosphorus (P) fertilizers for the sake of increasing soil P use efficiency and mitigating P losses. However, the long-term effects of P-laden biochars on soil P availability remains unconcerned. In this study, a laboratory-scale 70-days soil incubation experiment was conducted to study the effects of original and P-laden biochars on soil P availability and fractions. Two original biochars were derived from maize stalks by pyrolyzing at 350 °C and 600 °C. P was laden on those biochars by immersing biochars in saturated KH₂PO₄ solution for 24 h. Eight treatments were set for the incubation experiment, which were soil, soil + triple-superphosphate (TSP), soil + 350 °C biochar, soil + 600 °C biochar, soil + TSP + 350 °C biochar, soil + TSP + 600 °C biochar, soil + 350 °C P-laden biochar, and soil + 600 °C P-laden biochar. Results showed that original biochars could decrease soil available P through P adsorption. And there were no significant differences of soil P fractions under the treatments of mineral P fertilizer and P-laden biochars. Whereas, compared to mineral P fertilizer, P-laden biochars, especially 600 °C P-laden biochar, could maintain soil available P in a significantly higher level across the incubation. It was mainly because of the slow-releasing pattern of P laden on biochar and a more homogeneous soil P source distribution under P-laden biochar treatments. These results indicated that P-laden biochar could work as P fertilizer to improve soil P use efficiency.

Rice-duck co-culture integrated different fertilizers reduce P losses and Pb accumulation in subtropical China

Double pollution with phosphorus (P) losses and potential lead (Pb) accumulation in rice fields could lead to eutrophication and crop toxicity, respectively, and affect people's health. To promote the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of agriculture, we conducted field experiments using a randomized block design to explore P losses, Pb accumulation and any potential association between P and Pb forms in rice-duck (RD) co-culture system and rice monoculture (RM) system combined with different fertilizers applied: the no fertilizer (RD and RM), chemical fertilizer (RDF and RMF), organic fertilizer (RDO and RMO), and a mixture of 70% chemical and 30% organic fertilizers (RDFO and RMFO) treatments with consistent P inputs. The results showed that RDFO had the best advantages in reducing the losses of TP (total phosphorous) (by 6.67%) and DRP (dissolved reactive phosphate) (32.72%) as well as the contents of available Pb (by 7.57%) and the accumulation of Pb in grains (26.32%) compared with RMF. RDFO also achieved the highest grain yield, reaching 10.97 t ha^-1, and exhibited a lower soil weak-acid-extracted Pb (readily be taken up by plants) concentration than RDF and RMF. RDO resulted in greater TP leaching (increase by 10.62%) and lower DRP leaching (decrease by 36.57%) than RMF. It also exhibited the lowest concentration of weak-acid-extracted Pb and higher the concentration of grain Pb than that in other treatments. RDF reduced TP (by 5.33%) and DRP (by 16.36%) losses to a greater extent and the concentration of available and grain Pb were respectively 6.58% and 25.57% lower than RMF. Therefore, RDFO was the most recommended agricultural system for the studied region. Furthermore, different soil Pb forms were correlated with different P forms of soil and leakage and runoff water, which depended mainly on the fertilizer type and specific soil redox environment in the rice fields. The ratio of organic to inorganic fertilizer, the choice of organic fertilizer type, the assessment and timing of the detection of potential farmland pollution risks and association between different forms of P and Pb are worthy of further discussion.

Enhanced passivation of lead with immobilized phosphate solubilizing bacteria beads loaded with biochar/ nanoscale zero valent iron composite

Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSBs) can effectively enhance the stability of lead via the formation of insoluble Pb-phosphate compounds. This research presents a bio-beads, which was implemented with the help of a self-designed porous spheres carrier, by immobilized PSBs strains Leclercia adecarboxylata (hereafter referred as L1-5). In addition, the passivation efficiency of lead via bio-beads under different conditions and its mechanism were also investigated in this study. The results indicated that phosphate solubilized by bio-beads could reach 30 mg/L in Ca₃(PO₄)₂ medium containing 1 mM Pb²⁺, and the highest removal rate of Pb²⁺ in beef peptone liquid medium could reach 93%, which is better than that of free bacteria. Furthermore, it was also concluded that the lead could be transformed into stable crystal texture, such as Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl and Pb₅(PO₄)₃OH. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in the bio-beads could capture Pb²⁺, which indicated that electrostatic attraction and ion-exchange were also the mechanism of Pb²⁺ adsorption. All the experimental findings demonstrated that this bio-bead could be consider as an efficient way for the lead immobilization in contaminated soil in the future.

Synthesis and adsorption performance of La@ZIF-8 composite metal-organic frameworks

In this study, ZIF-8 with a rhombic dodecahedron structure was prepared by a hydrothermal method. Then La(OH)3, was successfully loaded onto the ZIF-8 by an immersion deposition method, to form a lanthanide-based metal-organic framework (La@ZIF-8) composites. The structure and properties of La@ZIF-8 were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential measurements. The optimum process conditions are discussed within the materials and methods. The effects of initial phosphorus concentration, dosage, pH and contact reaction time on the phosphorus removal performance of the nanomaterial were investigated. The results indicated that La@ZIF-8 exhibited an excellent adsorption capacity (147.63 mg g-1) and its phosphorus removal efficiency could reach as high as 99.7%. Experimental data were interpreted using different adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. The kinetic behavior conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicated the chemisorption of phosphorus by La@ZIF-8. The adsorption behavior of phosphorus by La@ZIF-8 fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a monolayer chemical adsorption process. The majority of the adsorbed phosphate could be desorbed by NaOH (2 mol L-1), and the removal efficiency of the recycled La@ZIF-8 reached 90%, even after the fifth cycle. The obtained results demonstrate the great application potential of the prepared La@ZIF-8 as a fascinating adsorbent for the removal of phosphate.

The potential role of sediment organic phosphorus in algal growth in a low nutrient lake

The role of sediment-bound organic phosphorus (P_o) as an additional nutrient source is a component of internal P budgets in lake system that is usually neglected. Here we examined the relative importance of sediment P_o to internal P load and the role of bioavailable P_o in algal growth in Lake Erhai, China. Lake Erhai sediment extractable P_o accounted for 11-43% (27% average) of extractable total P, and bioavailable P_o accounted for 21-66% (40%) of P_o. The massive storage of bioavailable P_o represents an important form of available P, essential to internal loads. The bioavailable P_o includes mainnly labile monoester P and diester P was identified in the sequential extractions by H₂O, NaHCO₃, NaOH, and HCl. 40% of H₂O-P_o, 39% of NaHCO₃-P_o, 43% of NaOH-P_o, and 56% of HCl-P_o can be hydrolyzed to labile monoester and diester P, suggesting that the bioavailability of P_o fractions was in decreasing order as follows: HCl-P_o > NaOH-P_o > H₂O-P_o > NaHCO₃-P_o. It is implied that traditional sequential fractionation of P_o might overestimate the availability of labile P_o in sediments. Furthermore, analysis of the environmental processes of bioavailable P_o showed that the stabler structure of dissloved organic matter (DOM) alleviated the degradation and release of diester P, abundant alkaline phosphatase due to higher algal biomass promoted the degradation of diester P. The stability of DOM structure and the degradation of diester P might responsible for the spatial differences of labile monoester P. The biogeochemical cycle of bioavailable P_o replenishs available P pools in overlying water and further facilitate algal growth during the algal blooms. Therefore, to control the algal blooms in Lake Erhai, an effective action is urgently required to reduce the accumulation of P_o in sediments and interrupt the supply cycle of bioavailable P_o to algal growth.

Effect of sheep manure-derived biochar on colloidal phosphorus release in soils from various land uses

Colloidal phosphorus (CP) as an additional route of P mobilization in soil solution has gained much attention. A batch experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of sheep manure-derived biochar (SMB) on CP release from various land uses (paddy, vegetable, tea, and citrus) at a rate of 0% as a control treatment (CK), 1% as a low (L) level, 2% as a middle (M) level, and 4% as a high (H) level of SMB application. The CP and MRP_coll in the solution increased from 30.58 to 88.97% and from 2.45 to 55.54% of total P (TP), respectively. The SMB enhanced CP release in all the soils and all the treatments (except CK and L levels in tea soil; CK, L, and M levels in vegetable soil; and L and M levels in citrus soil). Multiple linear regression revealed a significant correlation between CP and MRP_coll and between colloidal iron, aluminum, calcium, and total organic carbon (Fe_coll, Al_coll, Ca_coll, and TOC_coll) and pH, which may play an important role as CP carriers that could depend on the pH. This study suggests that the application of SMB in the soil at an appropriate rate of 1 and 2% for tea and vegetable soils, respectively, could be beneficial to avoid the risk of CP release in water bodies.

Simultaneous control of nitrogen and phosphorus release from sediments using iron-modified zeolite as capping and amendment materials

The use of zeolite as a geo-engineering tool has a high potential to control nitrogen (N) release from sediments, but its efficiency for controlling sedimentary phosphorus (P) release still need to be further increased. To address this issue, this work synthesized an iron-modified zeolite (IM-Z) by coating iron onto the surface of natural zeolite (NAT-Z) and then the as-obtained IM-Z was utilized as a geo-engineering material to block the upward mobilization of N and P from sediments to the overlying water. The efficiencies of IM-Z covering and amendment to prevent the liberation of N and P from sediments were evaluated, and the controlling mechanism was explored. Capping and amendment with IM-Z not only resulted in the tremendous reduction of the levels of ammonium-N (NH₄⁺-N) and reactive soluble P (RSP) in the overlying water, but also led to the decrease of the contents of NH₄⁺-N and RSP in the pore water. More importantly, sediment capping and amendment with IM-Z resulted in the formation of a static layer in the upper sediment directly below the sediment-water interface, with very low concentration of RSP in the pore water. In addition, IM-Z capping and addition effectively immobilized the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT)-labile P in the overlying water and sediment. Furthermore, the decrease of the DGT-labile Fe concentrations in the overlying water as well as the top sediment were also observed after IM-Z capping and addition. Nearly 70% of P bound by IM-Z is stable and difficult to be released back into the overlying water under common pH and anoxic conditions. The adsorption of pore water NH₄⁺-N on IM-Z, the immobilization of pore water RSP and DGT-labile P by IM-Z and the uptake of DGT-labile Fe on IM-Z played a significant role in the simultaneous control of NH₄⁺-N and RSP liberation. Compared to NAT-Z, the efficiency of IM-Z to block the liberation of sedimentary P was higher. Results of this study demonstrate that IM-Z is suitable for use in the simultaneous interception of the upward transportation of NH₄⁺-N and RSP from sediments into the overlying water.

Phosphate adsorption on hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) at different salinities and pHs

Phosphate adsorption on suspended sediments is largely influenced by the variations in salinity and pH such as is the case in estuaries where freshwater mixes with seawater, exhibiting strong physico-chemical gradients. In this research, the influence of salinity and pH on the adsorption of phosphate on hydrous ferric oxides (HFO) was investigated in NaCl solutions. The adsorption isotherm data at different salinities can be well fitted with the Langmuir-Freundlich model. At pH 8.5 the maximum adsorption capacity increases with increasing salinity, from 22.7 mg PO4/g at salinity 0-78.5 mg PO4/g at salinity 35 PSU (Practical Salinity Unit) with the largest increase occurring in the low salinity range (76.8 mg PO4/g at salinity 5 PSU). Phosphate adsorption is also highly pH dependent and the adsorption capacity decreases with increasing pH. The dependence of phosphate adsorption on salinity could be attributed to the inner-sphere complexation. The presence of Na⁺ modifies the phosphate speciation, which can also facilitate phosphate adsorption. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results show that both bidentate (≡Fe₂PO₄) and monodentate (≡FePO₄) complexes are formed during phosphate adsorption on HFO surface. Quantitative relationships between phosphate adsorption and salinity are proposed for the different pHs investigated in this study, which is important for the understanding of the phosphate adsorption dynamics during estuarine mixing.

Biochar additions alter phosphorus and nitrogen availability in agricultural ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Biochar is a carbon (C) rich product of thermochemical conversion of organic material that is used as a soil amendment due to its resistance to decomposition and its influence on nutrient dynamics; however, individual studies on biochar effects on phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) have proven inconsistent. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis of 124 published studies to evaluate the influence of biochar on available P, microbial biomass P (MBP), and inorganic N (NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N) in global agricultural ecosystems. Overall, the results showed that biochar applications significantly increased surface soil available P by 45% and MBP by 48% across the full range of biochar characteristics, soil type, or experimental conditions. By contrast, biochar addition to soil reduced NO₃^--N concentrations by 12% and NH₄⁺-N by 11%, but in most cases biochar added in combination with organic fertilizer significantly increased soil NH₄⁺-N compared to controls. Biochar C:N ratio and biochar source (feedstock) strongly influenced soil P availability response to biochar where inorganic N was most influenced by biochar C:N ratio and soil pH. Biochar made from manure or other low C:N ratio materials, generated at low temperatures, or applied at high rates were generally more effective at enhancing soil available P. It is important, however, to note that most negative results were observed in short-term (<6 months) where long-term studies (>12 months) tended to result in neutral to modest positive effects on both P and N. This meta-analysis indicates that biochar generally enhances soil P availability when added to soils alone or in combination with fertilizer. These findings provide a scientific basis for developing more rational strategies toward widespread adoption of biochar as a soil amendment for agricultural P and N management.

Biochar fails to enhance nutrient removal in woodchip bioreactor columns following saturation

Denitrifying bioreactors are edge-of-field structures that remove excess nitrogen (N) from intercepted agricultural drainage by supporting the activity of denitrifying microorganisms with a saturated organic carbon substrate. Although these bioreactors successfully mitigate N export, the typical woodchip systems have little effect on phosphorus (P), which is also often present in environmentally harmful quantities in drainage waters. Currently, the evidence that amending woodchip bioreactors with biochar enhances both N and P removal rates is mixed, but more work is required to test this hypothesis under controlled conditions. To determine the effect of biochar amendment on nitrate (NO₃-N) and phosphate (PO₄-P) removal in woodchip bioreactors, three media types-aged woodchips (W), 10% (B₁₀) and 30% (B₃₀) biochar by volume-were tested under different operational conditions during five-day laboratory trials with horizontal, flow-through columns. Nutrient removal was observed under different flow rates yielding hydraulic residence times of 3, 6, and 12 hours with four formulations of simulated agricultural drainage, all combination of 16.1 or 4.5 mg L^-1 NO₃-N and 1.9 or 0.6 mg L^-1 PO₄-P. Each unique treatment with respect to media type, HRT, and influent formulation was tested in triplicate using independent columns. All treatments successfully removed NO₃-N, but PO₄-P removal was inconsistent. Cumulative NO₃-N removal efficiencies ranged 15-98% with an average removal rate of 11.0 g m^-3 d^-1; biochar amendment enhanced removal only in response to sufficiently high loading rates. Cumulative PO₄-P removal efficiencies ranged from 66% removal to 170% export of the influent load; biochar addition was associated with increased export. These results indicate that pine-feedstock biochar poses a substantial increase to PO₄-P leaching risk and only modestly enhances NO₃-N removal given sufficiently high loading.

Ferrihydrite-impregnated granular activated carbon (FH@GAC) for efficient phosphorus removal from wastewater secondary effluent

Adsorptive removal of phosphorus from wastewater effluents has attracted attention because of its reduced sludge production and potential P recovery. In this study, we investigated granular activated carbons (GACs) impregnated with amorphous ferrihydrite (FH@GAC) for the sorption of phosphorus from aqueous solutions. Preoxidation of intact GAC surfaces using an oxidant (e.g., hypochlorite) and strong acids (e.g., HNO₃/H₂SO₄) was performed to create active functional groups (e.g., carboxyl or phenolic) for enhanced iron binding, leading to greater phosphorus uptake. Both the rate and the capacity of phosphorus sorption onto FH@GAC had significant, positive relationships (Pearson correlation coefficient r > 0.9) with the product of surface area and Fe content. The pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics explained the P sorption rate better than the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, whereas the Langmuir model fit the P sorption isotherm better than the Freundlich model. The iron content in the FH@GAC increased significantly (>10 mg/g) when GAC (e.g., BMC1050) was preoxidized by a 1:1 (w/w) concentrated HNO₃/H₂SO₄ mixture. The Langmuir maximum P sorption capacity of a functionalized FH@BMC1050 adsorbent prepared with acid pretreatment was estimated to be substantial (5.73 mg P/g GAC corresponding to 526 mg P/g Fe). This sorption capacity was superior to that of a FH slurry, possibly because the nano-sized FH formed inside the GAC pores (<2.5 nm) can bind phosphate ions more effectively than FH aggregates. Fixed-bed column reactor operation with bicarbonate regeneration showed potential for efficient, continuous phosphorus removal by FH@GAC media.

Chlorella vulgaris mixotrophic growth enhanced biomass productivity and reduced toxicity from agro-industrial by-products

Algal wastewater remediation has become attractive for a couple of years now, however the effectiveness of genetic toxicity reducing of some by-products through microalgae are still not well reported. This study aimed to evaluate the growth, nutrients and toxicity removal of Chlorella vulgaris cultivated under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions in three agro-industrial by-products. Mixotrophic culture using corn steep liquor showed higher cell concentration, specific growth rate, maximum cell productivity and biomass protein content when compared to cheese whey and vinasse. Nutrient removal results showed that C. vulgaris was able to completely remove corn steep liquor nutrients, while in cheese whey and vinasse culture this removal was not as efficient, observing remaining COD. This work evaluated for the first time the corn steep liquor and cheese whey genetic toxicity through Allium cepa seeds assay. These results demonstrate that corn steep liquor toxicity was totally eliminated by C. vulgaris cultivation, and cheese whey and vinasse toxicity were minimized. This study proves that the mixotrophic cultivation of C. vulgaris can increase cellular productivity, as well as it is a suitable and economic alternative to remove the toxicity from agroindustrial by-products.

Nutrient enrichment during shrimp cultivation alters bacterioplankton assemblies and destroys community stability

Intensive shrimp farming is generally accompanied by nutrient enrichment and gradual eutrophication, which impose major threats to shrimp culture ecosystems. However, little is known about how the bacterioplankton community in a rearing environment responds to increased eutrophication during shrimp culture processes. In this study, we used the MiSeq sequencing technique to explore the impacts of nutrient enrichment on the assembly and stability of the bacterioplankton community. Our results showed that magnitudes of the changes in the bacterioplankton community compositions (BCCs) and diversity were closely associated with eutrophication level. Moreover, a phylogenetic-based mean nearest taxon distance (MNTD) analysis revealed that increased eutrophication significantly (P < 0.01) changed the bacterioplankton ecological processes from deterministic to stochastic. A structural equation model showed that eutrophication indicators affected the BCCs either directly by controlling resources or indirectly by modifying other environmental variables of the shrimp ponds in complex pathways. Furthermore, association network comparisons revealed that nutrient enrichment increased the complexity of interspecies interactions and the proportion of cooperative interactions and decreased the proportion of generalists, which suggest that nutrient enrichment destroyed the community stability. These findings suggest that minimizing nutrient pollution, especially at the end of cultivation, could be an important management tool for establishing a microbially mature water system.

Contrasting effects of biochar on phosphorus dynamics and bioavailability in different soil types

We investigated how two different biochars (wood biochar - WBC and straw biochar - SBC) affected P dynamics and bioavailability in five different soils differing in pH, C%, texture, Fe, Al, Ca, and Mg giving a range of soils with low (S1 and S2), intermediate (S4), and high (S3 and S5) P sorption capacities. Langmuir and Freundlich equations were fitted to the sorption data of soil and soil/biochar mixtures. P fertilizer applied to all treatments was fractioned into strongly sorbed P (qS), easily available sorbed P (qA) and solution P (c) by determining the anion exchange resin (AER)-extractable P in samples from the sorption experiment. A pot experiment was conducted to measure P uptake by maize grown in S1, S2 and S3 amended with WBC or SBC at two P fertilizer levels (0 or 70mgPkg^-1). Only WBC could sorb P from solution partly due to a high content of calcite. SBC did not have any effect on P sorption isotherms, whereas WBC increased the P sorption in S1, S2, and S4, yet decreased P sorption in acidic soil S5. qS increased in S1, S2, and S4, and decreased in S5 in WBC treatments, whereas, qS decreased in SBC treatments in soils S2, S4, and S5. Accordingly, there was a significant interaction between soil type and biochar on maize growth and P uptake. Biochar had no effect in an alkaline soil (S3), whereas, WBC and SBC had positive effects on maize growth in slightly acidic soils S1 and S2, depending on the soil P status, however, the P uptake was lower in WBC compared to SBC treatments. Biochar and soil properties and the P status of the soil affect P bioavailability. The study provides useful information for optimizing the use of biochar in agricultural P management.

Electrochemical oxidizing digestion using PbO2electrode for total phosphorus determination in a water sample

Total phosphorus is one of the key water quality parameters in environmental monitoring. To precisely determine the total phosphorus, water samples have to be pretreated to convert the various forms of phosphorus to orthophosphate. Conventionally, pretreatment is accomplished by heating, acidification, and oxidation in a digestion equipment, which is dangerous, time-consuming, and complicated. Herein, we propose a novel high-performance electrochemical oxidation protocol for phosphorus digestion based on a PbO₂ electrode. The electrode, which has a hydrophobic and stable surface, was prepared by electrochemical deposition on a titanium substrate and has high hydroxyl radical utilization when digesting total phosphorus. As a result, 90% of sodium glycerophosphate was digested within 30 minutes, and high digestion ratios of acephate, glyphosate, and inland water samples were obtained as well. In addition, this electrochemical digestion protocol does not required heating and acidification steps, which shortens the digestion time. Therefore, a rapid quantification of total phosphorus in the water sample was achieved.

Mobile phosphorus stratification in sediments by aluminum immobilization

There is a great heterogeneity in the distribution of mobile phosphorus (P) in natural sediments, while the assessment of P immobilization by amendment agents has mostly neglected this feature. In this study, the effects of aluminum sulfate (ALS) on P immobilization were investigated via a 60-day microcosm experiment using sampled sediment cores. The high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) techniques were first employed to establish the profiles of soluble reactive P (SRP) and DGT-labile P in aluminum-amended sediments at 2 and 1 mm resolutions, respectively. Both concentrations of two mobile P forms decreased with increasing ALS dosages. The static layers with extremely low P concentrations (≤0.060 mg L^-1 for SRP and ≤0.024 mg L^-1 for DGT-labile P) were observed in the upper 6-16 mm sediment layers at 6-15 ALS/P_mobile treatments (mobile P is the sum of NH₄Cl-P, BD-P, and NaOH-nrP; mol mol^-1). The static layer was followed by an active layer in which the upward release potential (R_AL) decreased from 33.4 to 21.9 for SRP and from 92.2 to 51.0 for DGT-labile P, respectively. As the formation of the static layer is a key to sustaining P immobilization in sediments, the minimal dosage of 9 ALS/P_mobile is required for ALS capping. Modeling with DGT Induced Fluxes in Sediments (DIFS) showed a greater increase in adsorption rate constant (k₁, maximum 7.2-fold) compared to adsorption rate constant (k₁, maximum 2.2-fold), demonstrating that the release of P from sediment solids became increasingly difficult after ALS amendment.
