Sonocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine and diclofenac in the presence of graphene oxides in aqueous solution

Ultrasonic treatment of endocrine disrupting compounds, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products in water: An updated review

Pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have seen a recent sustained increase in usage, leading to increasing discharge and accumulation in wastewater. Conventional water treatment and disinfection processes are somewhat limited in effectively addressing this micropollutant issue. Ultrasonication (US), which serves as an advanced oxidation process, is based on the principle of ultrasound irradiation, exposing water to high-frequency waves, inducing thermal decomposition of H2O while using the produced radicals to oxidize and break down dissolved contaminants. This review evaluates research over the past five years on US-based technologies for the effective degradation of EDCs and PPCPs in water and assesses various factors that can influence the removal rate: solution pH, temperature of water, presence of background common ions, natural organic matter, species that serve as promoters and scavengers, and variations in US conditions (e.g., frequency, power density, and reaction type). This review also discusses various types of carbon/non-carbon catalysts, O3 and ultraviolet processes that can further enhance the degradation efficiency of EDCs and PPCPs in combination with US processes. Furthermore, numerous types of EDCs and PPCPs and recent research trends for these organic contaminants are considered.

Synthesis of magnetic layered double hydroxide (Fe3O4@CuCr-LDH) decorated with ZIF-8 for efficient sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

A series of Fe3O4@CuCr-LDH hybrids decorated with different amount of ZIF-8 (FLZ, 10-40 wt%) was prepared using simple methods and characterized with different techniques. The activity of the synthesized nanocomposites was investigated in the sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic from wastewater. When the content of ZIF-8 in the nanocomposite structure was 20 wt%, the FLZ-20 sonocatalyst exhibited the high performance in the sonocatalytic removal of TC. At optimum conditions (0.7 g/L catalyst dosage, pH of 7, 50 mg/L initial concentration of antibiotic, and 15 min sonication time) of the sonocatalytic removal of TC approached to 91.4% under ultrasonic irradiation (USI) using FLZ-20. This efficiency was much higher than those of obtained results by Fe3O4@CuCr-LDH and pristine ZIF-8. The formed ●OH and ●O2- exhibited the major roles in the sonocatalytic TC degradation process. The excellent performance of FLZ-20 can be attributed to the heterojunctions created between composite components, which could improve the electron transfer ability and effectively separate e-/h+ pairs. In addition, FLZ-20 showed the superior reusability and stability during three successive recycling. Moreover, the facile magnetically separation of the sonocatalyst from the aqueous solution was another outstanding feature, which prevents the formation of secondary pollutants. It can be concluded that the fabrication of heterojunctions is an efficient procedure to promote the sonocatalytic acting of the catalyst.

Ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in wastewater: A review

The existence of pollutants, such as toxic organic dye chemicals, in water and wastewater raises concerns as they are inadequately eliminated through conventional water and wastewater treatment methods, including physicochemical and biological processes. Ultrasonic treatment has emerged as an advanced treatment process that has been widely applied to the decomposition of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Ultrasonic treatment has several advantages, including easy operation, sustainability, non-secondary pollutant production, and saving energy. This review examines the elimination of dye chemicals and categorizes them into cationic and anionic dyes based on the existing literature. The objectives include (i) analyzing the primary factors (water quality and ultrasonic conditions) that influence the sonodegradation of dye chemicals and their byproducts during ultrasonication, (ii) assessing the impact of the different sonocatalysts and combined systems (with ozone and ultraviolet) on sonodegradation, and (iii) exploring the characteristics-based removal mechanisms of dyes. In addition, this review proposes areas for future research on ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in water and wastewater.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environment: Recent updates on the occurrence, fate, hazards and removal technologies

Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are extensively utilized pharmaceuticals worldwide. However, owing to the improper discharge and disposal practices, they have emerged as significant contaminants that are widely distributed in water, soils, and sewage sediments. This ubiquity poses a substantial threat to the ecosystem and human health. Consequently, it is imperative to develop rapid, cost-effective, efficient and reliable approaches for containing these substance in order to mitigate the deleterious impact of NSAIDs. This research provides a comprehensive review of the occurrence, fate, and hazards associated with NSAIDs in the general environment. Additionally, various removal technologies, including advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, and adsorption, were systematically summarized. The study also presents a comparative analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of different removal technologies while interpreting challenges related to NSAIDs' removal and proposing strategies for future development.

Synergistic Mechanism of Photocatalysis and Photo-Fenton by Manganese Ferrite and Graphene Nanocomposite Supported on Wood Ash with Real Sunlight Irradiation

The present research aimed to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of reduced graphene oxide and manganese ferrite nanocomposite supported on eucalyptus wood ash waste (WA) from industrial boilers, for the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) solutions, using sunlight as an irradiation source. For this, the photocatalyst named MnFe2O4-G@WA was synthesized by a solvothermal method and characterized by analyzes of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and zeta potential. Firstly, the photocatalyst was evaluated for photocatalytic decolorization of MB under different reaction conditions. Then, the influence of pH, photocatalyst dose and H2O2 was evaluated. MnFe2O4-G@WA showed 94% of efficiency for photocatalytic decolorization of MB under operating conditions of solar irradiation, 0.25 g/L of catalyst, 300 mg/L of H2O2. The proposed degradation reaction mechanism suggested that the photodegradation of MB was through a synergistic mechanism of photocatalysis and photo-Fenton reactions, with the combined action of the three materials used. The data adjusted to the first order kinetics from the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. In addition, MnFe2O4-G@WA showed high stability, maintaining its efficiency above 90% after 5 cycles. The results indicated that the nanophotocatalyst is a potential technology for the decolorization of MB solutions.

Use of mesoporous BiOI microspheres for sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Self-assembled mesoporous BiOI microsphere with nanosheets were prepared by a solvothermal method and used as sonocatalysts. The sonocatalytic performances of the BiOI microspheres were evaluated in terms of the degradation rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) as a model pollutant. We designed three comparative experiments to explore the degradation of TCH solution under natural light, namely with sonication, with BiOI alone, and with ultrasound (US)/BiOI synergy. The degradation rate of TCH with US/BiOI synergy was 227 times higher than that achieved with sonication and 83 times higher than that achieved with BiOI alone. The maximum TCH degradation rate was 93.0%. The synergistic effect was therefore significant, and the synergy factor was estimated to be 61. Many factors such as the ultrasonic duty cycle, applied power, catalyst concentration, and initial TCH dye concentration may affect the ultrasonic degradation efficiency. Box-Behnken design of the response surface method were used to optimize the parameters and to study the effects of the catalyst concentration, ultrasonic duty cycle, and applied power. Analysis of variance confirmed that the quadratic response surface model for predicting the sonocatalytic efficiency was good for the corresponding parameters (R² = 0.9936 and adjusted R² = 0.9854). The optimization results were verified by replicate experiments. The high TCH degradation rate may be related to the generation of reactive oxygen species at the end of cavitation bubble collapse, which can improve the chemical yields.

Carbon-Based Nanocatalysts (CnCs) for Biomass Valorization and Hazardous Organics Remediation

The continuous increase of the demand in merchandise and fuels augments the need of modern approaches for the mass-production of renewable chemicals derived from abundant feedstocks, like biomass, as well as for the water and soil remediation pollution resulting from the anthropogenic discharge of organic compounds. Towards these directions and within the concept of circular (bio)economy, the development of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes is of paramount importance. Within this context, the design of novel catalysts play a key role, with carbon-based nanocatalysts (CnCs) representing one of the most promising class of materials. In this review, a wide range of CnCs utilized for biomass valorization towards valuable chemicals production, and for environmental remediation applications are summarized and discussed. Emphasis is given in particular on the catalytic production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose or starch-rich food waste, the hydrogenolysis of lignin towards high bio-oil yields enriched predominately in alkyl and oxygenated phenolic monomers, the photocatalytic, sonocatalytic or sonophotocatalytic selective partial oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and the decomposition of organic pollutants in aqueous matrixes. The carbonaceous materials were utilized as stand-alone catalysts or as supports of (nano)metals are various types of activated micro/mesoporous carbons, graphene/graphite and the chemically modified counterparts like graphite oxide and reduced graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and fullerenes.

Effect of single and multilayered Ti3C2TX MXene as a catalyst and adsorbent on enhanced sonodegradation of diclofenac and verapamil

Single and multilayered Ti₃C₂T_X MXene (referred to as SLM and MLM in this study, respectively) was applied as catalysts in the ultrasonic (US) process to treat selected pharmaceutical compounds including diclofenac and verapamil (VRP). Due to solid surface, elemental composition, and functional groups of Ti₃C₂T_X MXene, the free OH• production was increased by 48.8% for the US treatment with SLM and 59.8% for the US treatment with MLM compared with the US-only treatment. Additionally, adsorption affected the performance during the US treatment in the presence of the catalyst. Thus, the US treatment in the presence of Ti₃C₂T_X MXene had an enhanced performance not only because of increased oxidation but also because of adsorption, particularly between positively charged VRP and negatively charged Ti₃C₂T_X MXene. Moreover, although the degradation of the performance was higher for SLM (85.1%) than for MLM (81.8%), by improving the dispersion and reducing the size via sonication, the US treatment in the presence of MLM showed the highest synergy effect. In other words, the US treatment in the presence of MLM showed higher performance than the simple sum of oxidation and adsorption. These findings confirm that the US treatment in the presence of MLM may be a promising technology to treat various pharmaceuticals as a more degradable, strongly reusable, and less toxic process.

Enhanced degradation of complex organic compounds in wastewater using different novel continuous flow non - Thermal pulsed corona plasma discharge reactors

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhAcs) in water bodies is a major concern due to their persistence, biological activity, and detrimental environmental effects. The present study focuses on the application of pulsed corona plasma technology to degrade such compounds. Three different plasma reactors, namely, sequential flow plasma reactor (SFR), continuous flow top discharge plasma reactor (TDPR) and continuous flow side discharge plasma reactor (SDPR), are designed and fabricated for their performance evaluation with respect to PhAC degradation. In all the reactors, wastewater was discharged as fine droplets for better interaction between the reactive oxidizing species (ROS) generated in the system and the pollutants. Enhanced degradation of the selected pharmaceutical compounds, i.e., diclofenac (DCF) and verapamil hydrochloride (VPL), is achieved with decreased treatment time and lower energy consumption. In SFR reactor water was recycled, whereas in continuous flow reactors hydraulic retention times (HRTs) were varied. The degradation efficiency of DCF (1 mg/L) and VPL (1 mg/L) was 99 % in SDPR, at HRTs of 9 and 12 min, respectively. Deposited energies (SFR- 71 W, TDPR - 92 W, SDPR- 51 W) varied due to the difference in reactor geometries. In the SDPR reactor, 99 % degradation of mixed pollutants with an initial concentration of 10 mg/L was achieved, at a HRT of 21 min. With an input power of 51 W, good energy efficiency (EEO) of 3.8 kWh/m³ and high yield (G) of 256.2 mg/kWh were obtained. . Nitrate formation was reduced by 73.2 % in TDPR and 85.0% in SDPR (32.1-8.6 mg/L) as compared to SFR (32.1 mg/L). The operating cost estimated was 0.71 $/m³, 0.80 $/m³ and 0.67 $/m³ for SFR, TDPR and SDPR, respectively. The results clearly indicate that the continuous flow reactor with side discharge is a viable alternative to traditional plasma reactors.

Carbamazepine degradation by visible-light-driven photocatalyst Ag3PO4/GO: Mechanism and pathway

Carbamazepine (CBZ), as one of the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals, is of great concern due to its potential impact on the ecosystem and human health. This study provides an effective approach to remove CBZ by using photocatalyst silver phosphate combined with graphene oxide (Ag3PO4/GO) under visible irradiation. The morphology, composition, and optical properties of Ag3PO4/GO were characterized employing SEM, XRD, and DRS. Graphene oxide could improve the visible-light utilization and promote electron's charge to enhance the photocatalytic performance of Ag3PO4/GO. With the optimal reaction condition of 5.86 mW/cm2 light intensity, 15-25 °C temperature, 5-7 pH, and 0.5 mg/L catalytic dosages, 5 mg/L CBZ could be completely degraded in 30 min, and the apparent rate constant could reach 0.12 min-1. Additionally, the radical trapping experiments indicated •OH and O2-• were the main reactive oxygen species employed to eliminate CBZ. The decay pathways of CBZ had been proposed accordingly, and the main product was the low-molecular products.

N-Doped Biochar as a New Metal-Free Activator of Peroxymonosulfate for Singlet Oxygen-Dominated Catalytic Degradation of Acid Orange 7

In this paper, using rice straw as a raw material and urea as a nitrogen precursor, a composite catalyst (a nitrogen-doped rice straw biochar at the pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C, recorded as NRSBC800) was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis. NRSBC800 was then characterized using XPS, BET, TEM and other technologies, and its catalytic performance as an activator for permonosulfate (PMS) to degrade acid orange 7 (AO7) was studied. The results show that the introduction of N-doping significantly improved the catalytic performance of NRSBC800. The NRSBC800/PMS oxidation system could fully degrade AO7 within 30 min, with the reaction rate constant (2.1 × 10 ^-1 min^-1) being 38 times that of RSBC800 (5.5 × 10^-3 min^-1). Moreover, NRSBC800 not only had better catalytic performance than traditional metal oxides (Co₃O₄ and Fe₃O₄) and carbon nanomaterial (CNT) but also received less impact from environmental water factors (such as anions and humic acids) during the catalytic degradation process. In addition, a quenching test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) research both indicated that AO7 degradation relied mainly on non-free radical oxidation (primarily singlet oxygen (¹O₂)). A recycling experiment further demonstrated NRSBC800's high stability after recycling three times.

Ciprofloxacin removal by ultrasound-enhanced carbon nanotubes/permanganate process: In situ generation of free reactive manganese species via electron transfer

Recently, free reactive manganese species (RMnS) generated via permanganate catalytic oxidation technology has been applied to contaminants abatement and sludge dewatering. This study proposed a novel free RMnS generation method in ultrasound enhanced carbon nanotube (CNTs)/permanganate process (UCP) for organics removal. Taking ciprofloxacin as a target contaminant, the removal efficiency in the UCP process (9.78 s^-1) was remarkably higher than that of the permanganate (0.71 s^-1) and CNTs/permanganate (2.57 s^-1) processes. CNTs could enrich manganese compounds and ciprofloxacin, and act as an electronic platform for the electronic transfer from ciprofloxacin to manganese compounds for free RMnS generation, which was revealed by DFT calculation and spectrum analysis. Meanwhile, ultrasound further regulated the generation of RMnS as it could transform the inactive solid Mn(IV) into free RMnS. In the UCP process, non-free radical modes including RMnS oxidation (49.8%) and electron transfer (23.5%) were the dominant processes for ciprofloxacin removal in the UCP process, and hydroxyl radical oxidation (13.2%), CNTs adsorption (5.5%), and PM oxidation (8.0%) also contributed to ciprofloxacin removal. Interestingly, CNTs could be well reused in the UCP process as more than 88.75% of ciprofloxacin was removed after five times reuse of CNTs. The UCP process provides a novel strategy for rapid contaminants removal in water treatment via continuous generation of free RMnS.

Boosted sono-oxidative catalytic degradation of Brilliant green dye by magnetic MgFe2O4 catalyst: Degradation mechanism, assessment of bio-toxicity and cost analysis

The magnetic MgFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via a facile co-precipitation technique and was comprehensively characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and VSM. The prepared NPs were used as catalyst in presence of ultrasound (US) irradiation to activate persulfate (PS) for generation of sulfate radicals (SO₄^·-) for boosted degradation of toxic Brilliant Green (BG) dye. Preliminary experiments revealed that highest BG dye degradation efficiency of 91.63% was achieved at MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose of 1.0 g/L, PS dose of 300 mg/L, and initial dye concentration of 70 ppm within 15 min of US irradiation. However, only US, US in presence of PS oxidation and US in presence of MgFe₂O₄ catalyst have shown 20.2%, 83.6% and 45.0% of BG dye removal, respectively. Furthermore, response surface methodology (RSM) based central composite design (CCD) was executed to investigate the effect of interaction between independent variables such as MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose (0.5-1.5 g/L), PS dose (150-350 mg/L), initial BG dye concentration (50-150 ppm) and US irradiation time (4-12 min). The RSM based quadratic model was used to predict the experimental data, and the prediction accuracy was confirmed by analysis of variance (R² = 0.98). The established RSM model has predicted the optimum experimental conditions as MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose of 0.75 g/L, PS dose of 300 mg/L, initial dye concentration of 75 ppm and sonication time of 10 min. Subsequently, the treatment cost analysis was performed for all thirty experimental runs of CCD, and the RSM predicted response was found to be evidently optimum as this has delivered best economic condition (140 $/kg of BG removed) with respect to relative dye removal (%). COD removal and residual sulfate analysis have demonstrated satisfactory reduction of COD (90.31%) as well as sulfate ions (42.87 ppm) in the dye solution after treatment. Results of degradation pathway analysis portrayed the transformation of BG molecule (M/Z ratio 385) into simpler fractions with M/Z ratio of 193, 161, 73, and 61. Moreover, the toxicity analysis revealed that sono-catalytically activated PS system has efficiently reduced the toxicity level of BG dye from 93.9% to 5.13%.

Efficient catalytic ozonation of diclofenac by three-dimensional iron (Fe)-doped SBA-16 mesoporous structures

The removal of diclofenac (DCF) that causes risks to the environment and human health remains a great challenge due to the inefficiency of conventional physical methods. In this work, an efficient catalytic ozonation of DCF is achieved from a novel iron-doped SBA-16 (Fe-SBA-16) three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous structure. The Fe-SBA-16/ozonation (O₃) system exhibits enhanced catalytic activity towards DCF mineralization (up to 79.3% in 1.5 h), which is 1.2 times of its counterpart, Fe-MCM-41, and 2.4 times of the sole ozonation without catalysts. The unique 3D mesoporous structures accelerate the mass transfer and meanwhile result in higher ozone utilization efficiency for more effective generation of active species, hence enhancing the DCF mineralization efficiency. We believe the well-defined Fe-SBA-16 catalyst coupled with their enhanced catalytic ozonation performances will provide new insights into the construction of mesoporous structured materials to eliminate hazards in aqueous solutions for the environment remediation.

Ultrasonic degradation of selected dyes using Ti3C2Tx MXene as a sonocatalyst

MXene, a new family of two dimensional materials, was utilized as a sonocatalyst in an ultrasonic treatment (US) process for removal of methylene blue (MB) and acid blue 80 (AB). The physico-chemical properties of MXene were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, porosimetry, and a zeta potential analyzer. Degradation of dyes by US was systemically investigated under several experimental conditions including: power density of US (45, 90, 135, and 180 W L^-1), frequency of US (28 and 970 kHz), pH of dye solution (3.5, 7, and 10.5), solution temperature (293, 303, and 313 K), and addition of hydroxyl radical promotor (H₂O₂) and scavenger (t-BuOH) to concentrations of 25 mM. Based on the experimental results, the quantity of H₂O₂, which was used as an indicator of hydroxyl radical concentration, was an important factor in determining the degradation rate of MB and AB in this US study. Additionally, synergetic indices for removal of both dyes were higher than 1.0 in all cases, indicating the outstanding efficiency of MXene as a sonocatalyst in the US reactor for removal of both, due to an increase in both (i) the quantity of H₂O₂ in the US reactor and (ii) active sites for adsorbates from dispersion effects. A stability test on MXene in the US process was conducted using X-ray diffraction and five-cycle recycling performance tests. Based on our experimental data, MXene can be utilized as a sonocatalyst in the US process for a high removal rate for dyes (e.g., MB).

Carbamazepine degradation by heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate with lanthanum cobaltite perovskite: Performance, mechanism and toxicity

The widely used carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of the most persistent pharmaceuticals and suffers insufficient removal efficiency by conventional wastewater treatment. A synthesized Co-based perovskite (LaCoO₃) was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in order to degrade CBZ. Results showed that LaCoO₃ exhibited an excellent performance in PMS activation and CBZ degradation at neutral pH, with low cobalt leaching. The results of FT-IR and XPS verified the high structurally and chemically stability of LaCoO₃ in PMS activation. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis suggested the generation of radical species, such as sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH). Radical quenching experiments further revealed the responsibility of SO₄^- as the dominant oxidant for CBZ oxidation. Ten products were detected via the oxidation of CBZ, with the olefinic double bond attacked by SO₄^- as the initial step. Hydroxylation, hydrolysis, cyclization and dehydration were involved along the transformation of CBZ. The toxicity of CBZ solution was significantly reduced after treating by PMS/LaCoO₃.

Facile hydrothermal synthesis of novel Fe-Cu layered double hydroxide/biochar nanocomposite with enhanced sonocatalytic activity for degradation of cefazolin sodium

This study reports the successful synthesis of Fe-Cu layered double hydroxide (Fe-Cu-LDH) /biochar (BC) nanocomposite by a hydrothermal method. The sonocatalytic performance of Fe-Cu-LDH/BC nanocomposite was investigated for the degradation of cefazolin sodium (CFZ), as a model emerging contaminant, from the solution. The physico-chemical properties of the synthesized samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analyses. The best sonocatalytic efficiency of 97.6% was achieved by using 1.0 g/L sonocatalyst, 0.1 mM CFZ, and an ultrasonic power of 300 W at pH = 6.5 (natural) within 80 min. Additionally, the effects of the addition of various oxidants, dissolved gases, and organic and inorganic scavengers on the degradation of CFZ were studied. Moreover, the possible sonocatalytic mechanism of the sonochemical degradation of CFZ in the presence of Fe-Cu-LDH/BC sonocatalyst was proposed based on the results of GC-MS analysis. The mineralization of CFZ solution was evaluated using COD and IC analyses. Finally, the reusability test of Fe-Cu-LDH/BC nanocomposite in the CFZ degradation revealed that almost 9% drop occurred after five successive cycles.

Comprehensive evaluation of the removal mechanism of carbamazepine and ibuprofen by metal organic framework

Pharmaceutical products (PhACs) in water sources are considered to be a severe environmental issue. To mitigate this issue, we used a metal-organic framework (MOF) as an adsorbent to remove selected PhACs (i.e., carbamazepine (CBM) and ibuprofen (IBP)). This work was carried out to characterize the MOF, then confirm its feasibility for removing the selected PhACs. In particular, based on practical considerations, we investigated the effects of various water quality conditions, such as solution temperature, pH, ionic strength/background ions, and humic acid. MOF exhibited better removal rates than commercial powder activated carbon (PAC), considering pseudo-second order kinetic model. We clarified the competitive PhACs adsorption mechanisms based on the results obtained under various water quality conditions and found that hydrophobic interactions were the most important factors for both adsorbates. To confirm the practicality of MOF adsorption, we carried out regeneration tests with four adsorption and desorption cycles using acetone as a cleaning solution. Furthermore, to support the results of our regeneration tests, we characterized the MOF samples before and after adsorbate exposure using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Overall, MOF can be used in practical applications as efficient adsorbents to remove PhACs from water sources.

A review on carbon-based materials for heterogeneous sonocatalysis: Fundamentals, properties and applications

Contamination of water resources by refractory organic pollutants is of great environmental and health concern because these compounds are not degraded in the conventional wastewater treatment plants. In recent years, sonocatalytic treatment has been considered as a promising advanced oxidation technique for the acceptable degradation and mineralization of the recalcitrant organic compounds. For this purpose, various sonocatalysts have been utilized in order to accelerate the degradation process. The present review paper provides a summary of published studies on the sonocatalytic degradation of various organic pollutants based on the application of carbon-based catalysts, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene (GR), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), activated carbon (AC), biochar (BC), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), carbon doped materials, buckminsterfullerene (C60) and mesoporous carbon. The mechanism of sonocatalytic degradation of different organic compounds by the carbon-based sonocatalysts has been well assessed based on the literature. Moreover, the details of experimental conditions such as sonocatalyst dosage, solute concentration, ultrasound power, applied frequency, initial pH and reaction time related to each study have also been discussed in this review. Finally, concluding remarks as well as future challenges in this research field regarding new areas of study are also discussed and recommended.

Heterogeneous sonocatalytic degradation of an anionic dye in aqueous solution using a magnetic lanthanum dioxide carbonate-doped zinc ferrite-reduced graphene oxide nanostructure

We report herein the sonochemical synthesis of a lanthanum dioxide carbonate (La₂O₂CO₃) and zinc ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄)-loaded reduced graphene oxide (LZF-rGO) nanoheterostructure for ultrasound (US)-assisted degradation of methyl orange (MO) from water. The MO was chosen as a model organic dye due to its toxicological and biodegradable-resistant properties. The LZF-rGO catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of characterizations confirmed successful synthesis of sonocatalyst. Among different removal systems, US/LZF-rGO displayed outstanding sonodegradation performance for degradation of MO. The maximum removal efficiency of 75.9% was achieved using 0.2 g/L sonocatalyst, 20 mg/L MO, and 0.71 W/cm² US power intensity for 65 min. MO can be partially adsorbed on LZF-rGO but mostly sonodegraded by reactive radical species. The reaction conditions were optimized by investigating the effect of key operating parameters, including the sonocatalyst dosage, initial MO concentration, US power intensity, presence of inorganic salts, and use of an enhancer, on the decolorization of MO. The degradation intermediates produced from MO during the sonocatalytic process were identified by UPLC^®/MS-MS, and possible mechanism and pathway for the degradation of MO in the US/LZF-rGO system were also proposed. Reusability experiments with this sonocatalyst revealed a less than 10% drop in the degradation efficiency after four adsorption-desorption cycles.

Enhanced sonocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine and salicylic acid using a metal-organic framework

A metal-organic framework (MOF) was used as a sonocatalyst for ultrasonic (US) processes, to improve the degradation of two selected pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs); carbamazepine (CBM) and salicylic acid (SA). The intrinsic characteristics of the MOF were characterized using a porosimeter (N₂-BET) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Various experiments were carried out under conditions with different US frequencies (28 and 1000 kHz), US power densities (45-180 W L^-1), pH conditions (3.5, 7, and 10.5), and temperatures (293, 303, and 313 K) to investigate the degradation rates of the selected PhACs. Improved removal rates of PhACs were demonstrated within 60 min at 28 kHz (46% for SA; 47% for CBM) and 1000 kHz (60% for SA; 99% for CBM) with an MOF concentration of 45 mg L^-1 in the US/MOF system, in comparison to 28 kHz (20% for SA; 25% for CBM) and 1000 kHz (37% for SA; 97% for CBM) under the 'US only' process. The removal of CBM was greater than that of SA under all experimental conditions due to the intrinsic properties of the PhACs. The degradation rates of PhACs are related to the quantity of H₂O₂; degradation is thus mostly affected by OH oxidation, which is generated by the dissociation of water molecules. The advantages of the 'US/MOF system' are as follows: (i) dispersion of MOF by US can improve sites and reactivity with respect to adsorption between the adsorbate (PhACs) and the adsorbent (MOF), and (ii) dispersed MOF acted as additional nuclei for water molecule pyrolysis, leading to the production of more OH. Therefore, based on the synergy indices, which were calculated using the removal rate constants [k₁ (min^-1)] of the pseudo-first order kinetic model, the 'US/MOF system' can potentially be used to treat organic pollutants (e.g., PhACs).

Sonocatalytic degradation of butylparaben in aqueous phase over Pd/C nanoparticles

In the present work, the sonocatalytic degradation of butylparaben was investigated using Pd immobilized on carbon black as the sonocatalyst. The presence of 25 mg/L 10Pd/C significantly increased the removal rate of butylparaben and the observed kinetic constant increased from 0.0126 to 0.071 min^-1, while the synergy index between sonolysis and adsorption was 70.7%. The BP degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the apparent kinetic constant decreased from 0.071 to 0.030 min^-1 when the initial concentration of butylparaben increased from 0.5 to 2 mg/L. The process was being favored slightly under alkaline conditions. The presence of organic matter (20 mg/L humic acid) reduced the apparent kinetic constant more than two times. The addition of chlorides up to 250 mg/L did not significantly reduce the rate of reaction, while the presence of 250 mg/L bicarbonates reduced the observed kinetic constant from 0.071 to 0.0472 min^-1. The prepared catalyst retains the efficiency after five subsequent experiments since the apparent kinetic constant was only slightly decreased from 0.071 to 0.059 min^-1.

Potential utility of graphene-based nano spinel ferrites as adsorbent and photocatalyst for removing organic/inorganic contaminants from aqueous solutions: A mini review

Toxic substances such as heavy metals or persistent organic pollutants raise global environmental concerns. Thus, diverse water decontamination approaches using nano-adsorbents and/or photocatalysts based on nanotechnology are being developed. Particularly, many studies have examined the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants with novel graphene-based nano spinel ferrites (GNSFs) as potential cost-effective alternatives to traditionally used materials, owing to their enhanced physical and chemical properties. The introduction of magnetic spinel ferrites into 2-D graphene-family nanomaterials to form GNSFs brings various benefits such as inhibited particle agglomeration, enhanced active surface area, and easier magnetic separation for reuse, making the GNSFs highly efficient and eco-friendly materials. Here, we present a short review on the state-of-the-art progresses on developments of GNSFs, as well as their potential application for removing several recalcitrant contaminants including organic dyes, antibiotics, and heavy metal ions. Particularly, the mechanisms involved in the adsorptive and photocatalytic degradation are thoroughly reviewed, and the reusability of the GNSFs is also highlighted. This review concludes that the GNSFs hold great potential in remediating contaminated aquatic environments. Further studies are needed for their practical and large-scale applications.

Efficient degradation of diclofenac by LaFeO3-Catalyzed peroxymonosulfate oxidation---kinetics and toxicity assessment

Diclofenac was frequently found in various waters, indicating conventional wastewater treatment methods ineffective in its removal. In this study, LaFeO₃ (LFO) was synthesized and its catalytic activity of LFO as the activator of different oxidants such as persulfate (PS), hydrogen peroxide and peroxylmonosulfate (PMS) was evaluated in terms of DCF degradation. The influence of calcination temperature was examined on the catalytic activity of LFO. The effects of various parameters including pH levels, PMS concentration, LFO dose and initial DCF concentration were investigated on DCF degradation rate. The marginal effects of PMS concentration and LFO dose were compared. Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model was used to quantitatively describe DCF degradation reaction in LFO/PMS system. The two constants, k (Limiting reaction rate at maximum coverage) and K (Equilibrium adsorption constant), were determined on the basis of LH model. The performance of LFO/PMS process was also estimated in the presence of various inorganic anions. The potential toxicity of LFO and PMS were evaluated using phytoplankton and the toxicity evolution during DCF degradation was also investigated using luminescent bacteria. This contribution provides a basic study regarding the potential application of heterogeneous PMS activation by perovskite LFO for both DCF removal and toxicity elimination.
