Oral bioaccessibility and health risk assessment of vanadium(IV) and vanadium(V) in a vanadium titanomagnetite mining region by a whole digestive system in-vitro method (WDSM)

Assessment of potential human health, radiological and ecological risks around mining areas in northeastern Brazil

Mining is responsible for the release of metallic pollutants and radioactive materials into the environment, which have the potential to disrupt ecosystems and pose significant risks to human health. Significant mining activity is concentrated in the municipality of Caetité (northeastern Brazil), where Latin America's only active uranium mine and significant iron ore deposits are located. Although previous studies have shown that the regional soil and water resources are highly contaminated by various toxic elements and that exposure to these elements is known to have adverse effects on human health, the health risks in this mining region have never been assessed. The aim of this unprecedented comprehensive investigation was to assess the health, radiological and ecological risks in this mining region, which is home to nearly 100,000 people. To achieve our goal, soil and water samples were collected in the vicinity of the mines and in the main settlements in the region. Fifteen metallic toxic elements were determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The HERisk code, which follows the main methodological guidelines for risk assessment, was used to quantify human health, radiological and ecological indices. The average values of the total risk and cancer risk indices indicated that region falls into the moderate risk category (1.0 ≤ HItot < 4.0). However, 63% of the sites had high risk values, with Fe, Co and As being the metals contributing most to total and cancer risk, respectively. Near the mining areas, the potential ecological risk can be considered extreme (PERI ≥ 600). The values of the calculated radiological indices correspond to typical values ​​in natural uranium areas. However, in the communities near the mine, the dose values are slightly above the permissible limit (1 mSv y-1), so they must be continuously monitored, and risk mitigation measures must be taken.

Desorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Microplastics in Human Gastrointestinal Fluid Simulants-Implications for Exposure Assessment

Microplastics have been detected in various food types, suggesting inevitable human exposure. A major fraction may originate from aerial deposition and could be contaminated by ubiquitous pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). While data on the sorption of pollutants to microplastics are abundant, the subsequent desorption in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less understood. This prompted us to systematically investigate the release of microplastics-sorbed PAHs at realistic loadings (44-95 ng/mg) utilizing a physiology-based in vitro model comprising digestion in simulated saliva, gastric, and small and large intestinal fluids. Using benzo[a]pyrene as a representative PAH, desorption from different microplastics based on low density polyethylene (LDPE), thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), and polyamides (PAs) was investigated consecutively in all four GIT fluid simulants. The cumulative relative desorption (CRD) of benzo[a]pyrene was negligible in saliva simulant but increased from gastric (4 ± 1% - 15 ± 4%) to large intestinal fluid simulant (21 ± 1% - 29 ± 6%), depending on the polymer type. CRDs were comparable for ten different microplastics in the small intestinal fluid simulant, except for a polydisperse PA-6 variant (1-10 μm), which showed an exceptionally high release (51 ± 8%). Nevertheless, the estimated contribution of microplastics-sorbed PAHs to total human PAH dietary intake was very low (≤0.1%). Our study provides a systematic data set on the desorption of PAHs from microplastics in GIT fluid simulants.

Recovery of vanadium with melamine in acidic medium

Many hydro-metallurgical methods are developed to recover vanadium, while ammonium salt precipitation possesses the final step and it has threatened the environment. The key point is to find a new compound to replace ammonium salts without reducing vanadium recovery efficiency. Some compounds with -NH2 function groups have attracted our attention as they have similar function groups with ammonium salts. In this paper, the adsorption of vanadium with melamine is conducted. The results show that high adsorption efficiency can be achieved in a short time and melamine displays great performance in the recovery of all concentrations of vanadium. Response surface methodology (RSM) is used to optimize the reaction conditions and order the parameters: reaction temperature > concentration of vanadium > dosage of melamine > reaction time. 99.63% vanadium is adsorbed under optimized conditions: n(melamine)/n(V) = 0.6, reaction time of 60 min, 10 g/L vanadium solution and reaction temperature of 60°C. The successful application of melamine in the recovery of vanadium provides a new way for the utilization of melamine and also a glorious future for -NH2 compounds in the recovery heavy metals.

Dynamic Stomach Model-Capillary Electrophoresis-ICPMS for Evaluation of Release and Transformation Behaviors of Arsenic Species from Microplastics during Digestion

Microplastics (MPs) can act as carriers of environmental arsenic species into the stomach with food and release arsenic species during digestion, which threatens human health. Herein, an integrated dynamic stomach model (DSM)-capillary electrophoresis-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICPMS) is developed for online monitoring of the release and transformation behaviors of arsenic species loaded on MPs (As-MPs) in the simulated human stomach. The 3D-printed DSM with a soft stomach chamber enables the behaviors of gastric peristalsis, gastric and salivary fluid addition, pH adjustment, and gastric emptying (GE) to be controlled by a self-written program after oral ingestion of food with As-MPs. The gastric extract during digestion is introduced into the spiral channel to remove the large particulate impurity and online filtered to obtain the clarified arsenic-containing solution for subsequent speciation analysis of arsenic by CE-ICPMS. The digestion conditions and pretreatment processes of DSM are tracked and validated, and the release rates of As-MPs digested by DSM are compared with those digested by the static stomach model and DSM without GE. The release rate of inorganic arsenic on MPs is higher than that of organic arsenic throughout the gastric digestion process, and 8% of As(V) is reduced to As(III). The detection limits for As(III), DMA, MMA, and As(V) are 0.5-0.9 μg L-1 using DSM-CE-ICPMS, along with precisions of ≤8%. This present method provides an integrated and convenient tool for evaluating the release and transformation of As-MPs during human gastric digestion and provides a reference for exploring the interactions between MPs and metals/metalloids in the human body.

Efficient reduction of vanadium (V) with biochar and experimental parameters optimized by response surface methodology

Water pollution deteriorates ecosystems and has a great threaten to the environment. The environmental benefits of wastewater treatment are extremely important to minimize pollutants. Here, the biochar purchased from the related industry was used to treat the wastewater which contained high concentration of vanadium (V). The concentration of vanadium was measured by the IC-OES and the results showed that 96.1% vanadium (V) was reduced at selected reaction conditions: the mass ratio of biochar to vanadium of 5.4, reaction temperature of 90 °C, reaction time at 60 min and concentration of H2SO4 of 10 g/L, respectively. Response surface methodology confirmed that all the experimental parameters had positive effect on the reduction of vanadium (V), which could improve the reduction efficiency of vanadium (V) as increased. The influence of each parameter on the reduction process followed the order: A (Concentration of H2SO4) > C (mass ratio of biochar to vanadium) > B (mass ratio of biochar to vanadium). Especially, the mass ratio of biochar to vanadium and concentration of H2SO4 had the greatest influence on the reduction process. This paper provides a versatile strategy for the treatment of wastewater containing vanadium (V) and shows a bright tomorrow for wastewater treatment.

Long-term effect of municipal solid waste compost on the recovery of a potentially toxic element (PTE)-contaminated soil: PTE mobility, distribution and bioaccessibility

Compost from municipal solid waste (MSWC) can represent a resource for the environmental management of soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), since it can reduce their mobility and improve soil fertility. However, the long-term impact of compost on soil recovery has been poorly investigated. To this end, the influence of a MSWC added at different rates (i.e. 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% w/w) to a multi-PTE-contaminated (e.g. Sb 412 mg kg-1, Pb 2664 mg kg-1 and Zn 7510 mg kg-1) sub-acidic soil (pH 6.4) was evaluated after 6 years since its addition. The MSWC significantly enhanced soil fertility parameters (i.e. total organic carbon, Olsen P and total N) and reduced the PTE labile fractions. The distribution maps of PTEs detected through µXRF analysis revealed the presence of Zn and Pb carbonates in the amended soils, or the formation of complexes between these PTEs and the functional groups of MSWC. A higher oral, inhalation and dermal bioaccessibility of each PTE was detected in the soil fine-grained fractions (< 2 and 2-10 µm) than in coarse particles (10-20 and 20-50 µm). The MSWC amendment generally did not modify the PTE bioaccessibility, while the relative bioaccessibility of cationic PTEs was greater than that of anionic ones (e.g. Cd > Zn > Pb > Sb > As). Pb and Sb showed the highest hazard quotients (e.g. 2.2 and 10 for Sb and Pb, respectively, in children). Overall, the results indicated that the MSWC used can be an effective option for the recovery of PTE-contaminated soils, even in the long term.

Bioaccessible metals in dust materials from non-sulfide Zn deposit and related hydrometallurgical operation

Mining and processing of ores in arid (desert) areas generates high amounts of dust, which might be enriched in potentially harmful elements. We studied dust fractions of ores, soils, and technological materials from mining and related hydrometallurgical operation at former Skorpion Zinc non-sulfide Zn deposit in southern Namibia (closed and placed under maintenance in 2020). Chemical and mineralogical investigation was combined with oral bioaccessibility testing of fine dust fractions (<48 μm and <10 μm) in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) to assess potential risk of intake of metallic contaminants (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) for staff operating in the area. The bulk metals concentrations were largely variable and ranked as follows: soils < tailings ≪ Skorpion ores < imported ores and dross used for feed ore blending. Maximum contaminant concentrations in the original granular materials were 927 mg Cd/kg, 9150 mg Cu/kg, 50 g Pb/kg and 706 g Zn/kg, respectively, and generally increased as a function of decreasing grain size. The highest bioaccessible concentrations of Cd and Pb yielded imported ores from Taiwan and Turkey and, together with the milled dross, these samples also exhibited the highest Zn bioaccessibilities. The exposure estimates calculated for a worker (weighing 70 kg) in this mining/ore processing operation at a dust ingestion rate of 100 mg/day indicated that most dust samples (soils, tailings, Skorpion ores) exhibited metals intake values far below tolerable daily intake limits. The overall health risk was limited in all mining and ore processing areas except for the ore blending area, where imported ores and recycled dross enriched in bioaccessible Cd, Pb and/or Zn were used for the ore blending. Safety measures required by the mine operator (wearing of masks by the operating staff) helped to prevent the staff's exposure to potentially contaminated dust even in this blending ore area.

Vanadium mobilization and redistribution during mineral transformation of vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings with different weathering degrees

Due to the long-term open stockpile, the release of vanadium (V) from V-containing tailings will cause continuous V pollution in the mining area. Previous studies on the concentration and speciation of V primarily focused on surface tailings at a regional scale. However, the mobilization and redistribution of V within the tailing profile during the mineral transformation of tailings remain unclear. Herein, a series of concentrations of V(V) (0-200 mg L-1) solutions were added to the vanadium‑titanium magnetite tailings at different depths separately to simulate the redistribution of dissolved V released from tailings in the solid phase of tailings. During the 56-day incubation, the concentrations of aqueous V in the surface tailings were significantly lower than those in the deep tailings under the same level of V(V) treatment, indicating that the shallow tailings had a stronger immobilization capacity for V than the deep tailings. Morphological analysis and color overlays of the elements demonstrated that most of V was immobilized into the tailings and adsorbed or precipitated by the Fe (hydr)oxides in the tailings in 200 mg L-1 V(V) treatment. This portion of V mainly occurred in acid-soluble and reducible fractions in the tailings after a 7-day incubation, accounting for >71.7 % of the total V. However, these two factions of V with high bioavailability were gradually mineralized over time and transferred to residual V, which is difficult to move and has low bioavailability. Mineral phase analysis revealed that additional V(V) favored the formation of melanovanadite (Ca2V8O20·10H2O) and chromium vanadium oxide (Cr2V4O13) in the tailings. This study reveals that the dissolved V influenced the fractionation and redistribution of solid-phase V during tailing weathering, improving the understanding of the geochemical processes of V in tailing profiles and providing important guidance for the management of V-containing tailings.

Medicinal applications of vanadium complexes with Schiff bases

Many transition metal complexes have been explored for their therapeutic properties after the discovery of cisplatin. Schiff bases have an efficient complexation tendency with the transition metals and several medicinal properties have been reported. However, fewer studies have reported the medicinal utility of vanadium and its Schiff base complexes. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of vanadium complexes with Schiff bases along with their mechanistic insight. Vanadium complexes in + 4 and + 5 oxidation states have exhibited well-defined geometry and found to be thermodynamically stable. The studies have reported the G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest and decreased delta psi m, inducing mitochondrial membrane depolarization in cancer cell lines along with the alterations in the metabolism of the cancer cells upon dosing with the vanadium complexes. Cancer cell invasion and growth are also found to be markedly reduced by peroxo complexes of vanadium. The studies included in the review paper have been taken from leading indexing databases and focus was laid on recent reports in literature. The biological potential of vanadium complexes of Schiff bases opens new horizons for future interdisciplinary studies and investigation focussed on understanding the biochemistry of these complexes, along with designing new complexes which have better bioavailability, solubility and low or non-toxicity.

Comparison of the Effects on Bovine Serum Albumin Induced by Different Forms of Vanadium

Various forms of vanadium coexist in vivo, and the behavior mechanism is different. An investigation of the separate and simultaneous binding of three vanadium forms with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was performed. VO(acac)₂/NaVO₃/VOSO₄ bound to site I of BSA, and their binding constants were 4.26 × 10⁵, 9.18 × 10³, and 4.31 × 10² L mol^-1 at 298 K, respectively. VO(acac)₂ had the strongest binding ability to BSA and had the most influence on the secondary structure of BSA and the microenvironment of around amino acid residues. The effect of NaVO₃ and VOSO₄ coexistence on the binding of VO(acac)₂ to BSA was therefore further investigated. Both NaVO₃ and VOSO₄ had an effect on the binding of VO(acac)₂ and BSA, with NaVO₃ having the most noticeable effect. NaVO₃ interfered with the binding process of VO(acac)₂ and BSA, increased the binding constant, and changed the binding forces between them. Competition and allosteric effect may be responsible for the change of binding process between VO(acac)₂ and BSA in the presence of NaVO₃/VOSO₄.

Heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soil from main grain production regions of China: Bioaccessibility and health risks to humans

Unintentional ingestion of metal-contaminated soils may pose a great threat to human health. To accurately evaluate the health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils, their bioaccessibility has been widely determined by in vitro assays and increasingly employed to optimize the assessment parameters. Given that, using meta-analysis, we analyzed the literature on farmland heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in Chinese main grain production regions, and collected their total and bioaccessibility data to accurately assess their human health risks. Monte Carlo simulation was used to reduce the uncertainty in metal concentration, intake rate, toxicity coefficient, and body weight. We found that the mean concentration (0.47 mg/kg) and geological accumulation index (I_geo, 0-5.24) of Cd were the priority position of controlling metals. Moreover, children are more vulnerable to carcinogenic risks than adults. Soil mineralogy, physicochemical properties, Fe, and the types of in vitro assays are the influencing factors of bioaccessibility discrepancy. Furthermore, appropriate bioaccessibility determination methods can be adapted according to the differences in ecological receptors for the risk assessment, like developing a "personalized assessment" scheme for polluted farmland soil management. Collectively, bioaccessibility-based models may provide an accurate and effective approach to human health risk assessment.

The local health impacts of natural resource booms

This paper uses novel micro-data on natural resources and administrative health data in Brazil to study how economic booms in minerals affect health at birth. By implementing a reduced-form estimation of shift-share research designs, the identification strategy relies on the exogeneity of global commodity prices to municipality-specific health outcomes. I find that, following changes in international prices, municipalities with historically more endowments have a higher number of premature births and births with low Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration scores. The impacts are primarily driven by metallic minerals. Instead, industrial minerals do not appear to have any effect on birth outcomes. Even though booms in metallic minerals generate benefits through resource windfalls-by increasing wealth and generating economic opportunities-the investigation of mechanisms reveals that they also result in costs-due to pollution-which seem to prevail. Hence, some metallic minerals remain a curse more than a blessing.

Literature Review on the Effects of Heavy Metal Stress and Alleviating Possibilities through Exogenously Applied Agents in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Heavy metals (HMs) are among the most important toxic agents since they reach the soil through various routes and accumulate in the food chain. Therefore, HMs induce problems in soil integrity and in plant, animal, and human health. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a significant crop worldwide, utilized in animal production. Furthermore, because of its nitrogen-absorbing ability via symbiotic strains of bacteria, it increases soil productivity. However, there are relatively few studies investigating the effects of HMs and their alleviation possibilities on alfalfa plants. Therefore, the goal of this review is to clarify the current state of research into HM-induced alterations in alfalfa and to determine the extent to which externally applied microorganisms and chemical compounds can mitigate the negative effects. The aim is to indicate areas of development towards further understanding of HM detoxification in alfalfa and to identify future research directions.

Benefit-Risk Assessment of Dietary Patterns by Bioavailable Metals, Gut Microbes, and Their Interaction for Human Health

The high-carbohydrate, low-fat, low-protein (HC-LFP) and low-carbohydrate, high-fat, high-protein (LC-HFP) diets are the main dietary patterns worldwide. The influence of dietary patterns on bioavailable metals, gut microbes, and their interaction is still unknown. A biomimetic digestive tract with full functions is constructed to transform the diets into chyme, and the gut microbes are cultured with the corresponding chyme. The diet species-specificity in bioavailable metal content and the positive and negative correlations between bioavailable metals and microbial reproductions are disclosed. The safe dosage and maximum consumption are 369.5 and 858.6 g/d and 268.6 and 3119.0 g/d for LC-HFP and HC-LFP, respectively. When replacing HC-LFP with LC-HFP for 21 days, the bioavailability of Fe and Cr is increased 83.2% and 268.4%, respectively; the reproductions of harmful and benefical microbes are significantly increased and decreased. The prevalences of obesity, inflammation, septicemia, and cancer are increased, and then the risk of dietary pattern shift is disclosed.

Vanadium for Green Energy: Increasing Demand but With Health Implications in Volcanic Terrains

The transition to a clean energy future may require a very substantial increase in resources of vanadium. This trend brings into focus the potential health issues related to vanadium in the environment. Most vanadium enters the Earth's crust through volcanic rocks; hence, vanadium levels in groundwaters in volcanic aquifers are higher than in other aquifers and can exceed local guidance limits. The biggest accumulation of volcanogenic sediment on the planet is downwind of the Andes and makes up much of Argentina. Consequently, groundwaters in Argentina have the highest vanadium contents and constitute a global vanadium anomaly. The high vanadium contents have given rise to health concerns. Vanadium could be extracted during remediation of domestic and other groundwater, and although the resultant resource is limited, it would be gained using low-energy technology.

Vanadium(IV) oxide affects embryonic development in mice

Vanadium(V) and vanadium(IV) are the predominant redox forms present in the environment, and epidemiological studies have reported that prenatal vanadium exposure is associated with restricted fetal growth and adverse birth outcomes. However, data about the toxic effects of vanadium(IV) oxide (V₂ O₄ ) on the development of mammals are still limited. Therefore, in this work, 4.7, 9.4, or 18.7 mg/kg body weight/injection/day V₂ O₄ was administered through an intraperitoneal (ip) injection to pregnant mice from gestational days 6 to 16. The results showed that V₂ O₄ produced maternal and embryo-fetal toxicity and external abnormalities in the offspring, such as malrotated and malpositioned hind limbs, hematomas and head injuries. Moreover, the skeletons of the fetuses presented reduced ossification of the cranial bones, including the frontal and parietal bones, corresponding to head injuries observed in the external assessment of the fetuses. These results demonstrate that administration of V₂ O₄ to pregnant females in the organogenesis period adversely affects embryonic development.

A Clean Method for Vanadium (V) Reduction with Oxalic Acid

Water pollution deteriorates ecosystems and is a great threat to the environment. The environmental benefits of wastewater treatment are extremely important to minimize pollutants. Here, the oxalic acid used as reductant was used to treat the wastewater which contained high concentration of vanadium (V). Nearly 100% of vanadium was efficiently reduced at selected reaction conditions. The optimization results simulated by response surface methodology (RSM) analysis indicated the parameters all had significant effects on the reduction process, and followed the order: dosage of oxalic acid > reaction temperature > reaction time > initial pH of vanadium-containing wastewater. The reduction behavior analysis indicated that the pseudo first-order kinetics model could describe well the reduction process with Ea = 42.14 kJ/mol, and was described by the equation as followed: −LnC=K0·[pH]0.1016·[n(O)/n(V)]2.4569·[T]2.2588·exp(−42.14/T)·t.

Improving the predictive value of bioaccessibility assays and their use to provide mechanistic insights into bioavailability for toxic metals/metalloids - A research prospectus

Widespread contamination of soil, dust, and food with toxic metal(loid)s pose a significant public health concern. Only a portion of orally ingested metal(loid) contaminants are bioavailable, which is defined as the fraction of ingested metal(loid)s absorbed across the gastrointestinal barrier and into systemic circulation. Bioaccessibility tools are a class of in vitro assays used as a surrogate to estimate risk of oral exposure and bioavailability. Although development and use of bioaccessibility tools have contributed to our understanding of the factors influencing oral bioavailability of metal(loid)s, some of these assays may lack data that support their use in decisions concerning adverse health risks and soil remediation. This review discusses the factors known to influence bioaccessibility of metal(loid) contaminants and evaluates experimental approaches and key findings of SW-846 Test Method 1340, Unified BARGE Method, Simulated Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem, Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium assay, In Vitro Gastrointestinal model, TNO-Gastrointestinal Model, and Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment bioaccessibility models which are used to assess oral absolute bioavailability and relative bioavailability in solid matrices. The aim of this review was to identify emerging knowledge gaps and research needs with an emphasis on research required to evaluate these models on (1) standardization of assay techniques and methodology, and (2) use of common criteria for assessing the performance of bioaccessibility models.

One-pot synthesis of sodium alginate-grafted-terpolymer hydrogel for As(III) and V(V) removal: In situ anchored comonomer and DFT studies on structures

In this work, an optimum sodium alginate (NaAlg)-grafted-[sodium 2-methylenesuccinate-co-sodium 2-((2-(isobutyryloxy)ethoxy)methyl)succinate-co-ethylene glycol methacrylate, i.e., SMS-co-SIBEMS-co-EGMA, i.e., P1], i.e., P2, was selected among twelve hydrogels synthesized by employing variable amounts of synthesis parameters through a facile polymerization of SMS and EGMA monomers. In P1 and P2, SIBEMS third comonomer was strategically anchored in situ. The formation of terpolymer, i.e., P1, rather than generally expected copolymer, i.e., SMS-co-EGMA/ CoP1, was explored via closeness of experimental and simulated excitation energies of P1 and CoP1, measured by using density functional theory (DFT). The grafting of NaAlg into synthetic P1 elevated swelling, crosslink density (CD), network stability, reusability, and adsorption capacity (AC) of semisynthetic hydrogel, i.e., P2. The reusable P2 presenting optimum result among swelling, CD, and mean molar mass was chosen selectively for removals of As(III) and V(V). The structures of P1, P2, and adsorbed P2, i.e., As(III)-P2 and V(V)-P2; NaAlg-grafting; in situ anchored SIBEMS comonomer; reusability; thermostability; and surface properties were explored through XPS-NMR-FTIR-UV-vis, DFT, TG, DLS, XRD, SEM, pH_PZC, and network and thermodynamic energies. The ACs of 0.025 g P2 for As(III) and V(V) were 112.24 and 88.89 mg g^-1, respectively, at 308 K and within 5-100 mg L^-1. The ACs reduced to 67.26, 75.49, 71.42, and 98.25 mg g^-1 for As(III) and 40.25, 50.49, 45.37, and 67.88 mg g^-1 for V(V) in the presence of Mn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II), respectively.

Benefit-risk assessment of metal bioavailability in edible fungi by biomimetic whole digestive tracts with digestion, metabolism, and absorption functions

As worldwide edible fungi, Lentinula edodes and Agaricus bisporus accumulate both essential and harmful metals. Metal bioavailability is important for metal benefit-risk assessment. A full functional model of digestive tracts (including digestion, metabolism, and absorption) is established. Under the digestive tract functions, the bioaccessible and bioavailable metals are released from edible fungi and absorbed by intestinal tract, respectively. Based on bioavailable metal contents in the intestine, safe dosage and maximum consumption are 43.52 g/d and 248.7 g/d for Agaricus bisporu, 20.59/328.9 g/d (for males/ female) and 132.9 g/d for Lentinus edodes; V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Cr, Cd and Pb in Agaricus bisporus and Lentinula edodes are absorbed mainly in the large intestine; Fe is mainly absorbed in small intestine; edible fungi species-specificity in metal bioavailability is observed for As and Mn, which are mainly absorbed by small and large intestine for Agaricus bisporus and Lentinus edodes, respectively; and then metal toxicity on small and large intestine is disclosed. Metal benefit-risk is assessed by the content of monolayer liposome-extracted metal in the chyme from small and large intestine, which is controlled by the gastrointestinal functions, metal and edible fungi species.

A Dual Role of Vanadium in Environmental Systems-Beneficial and Detrimental Effects on Terrestrial Plants and Humans

The importance of vanadium (V) in the functioning of land systems is extremely diverse, as this element may exert both positive and harmful effects on terrestrial organisms. It recently become considered an element of beneficial character with a range of applications for human welfare. The health-ameliorative properties of this transition element depend on its degree of oxidation and on optimal concentration in the target cells. It was found that a similar relationship applies to vascular plants. However, excessive amounts of vanadium in the environment contaminate the soil and negatively affect the majority of living organisms. A significantly elevated level of V results in the destabilization of plant physiological balance, slowing down the growth of biomass which significantly reduces yield. In turn, low doses of the appropriate vanadium ions can stimulate plant growth and development, exert cytoprotective effects, and effectively enhance the synthesis of some biologically active compounds. We present the scientific achievements of research teams dealing with such topics. The issues discussed concern the role of vanadium in the environment, particular organisms, and highlight its dualistic influence on plants. Achievements in the field of V bioremediation, with the use of appropriately selected microorganisms and plant species, are emphasized.

Scale-up one-pot synthesis of waste collagen and apple pomace pectin incorporated pentapolymer biocomposites: Roles of waste collagen for elevations of properties and unary/ ternary removals of Ti(IV), As(V), and V(V)

Herein, hazardous solid particulate waste collagenic fibers (SWCFs) of leather industries were incorporated into apple pomace pectin (APPN)-grafted-pentapolymer, i.e., APPN-g-[sodium 2-methylidenebutanedioate(SMBD)-co-N-((3-(isopropylamino)-3-oxopropoxy) methyl) butyramide (CM1)-co-N-(hydroxymethyl)prop-2-enamide (NHMPE)-co-N-(hydroxymethyl)-4-(N-isopropylbutyramido)butanamide (CM2)-co-N-(propan-2-yl)prop-2-enamide NPYPE)/ PENP1], i.e., APPN-g-PENP1/ PENP2, prepared via one-pot facile polymerization of APPN and synthetic monomers, i.e., SMBD, NHMPE, and NPYPE, in aqueous medium, to fabricate an optimum multifunctional hybrid biocomposite adsorbent/ HCOM3. In PENP1, PENP2, and HCOM3, fourth/ CM1 and fifth/ CM2 multifunctional comonomers were anchored in situ. The structures of PENP1, PENP2, HCOM3, CM1, CM2, and metal-ion adsorbed HCOM3; APPN-grafting; SWCF incorporation; and surface properties were analyzed through NMR, XPS, FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The elevated adsorption efficiencies (AEs), reusability, thermostability, swelling, network durability, and crosslink density of HCOM3 were attributed to variable functionalities of SWCF/ APPN, explored by DLS and TGA, swelling, network, and thermodynamic parameters. Compared to SWCF, APPN, PENP1, and PENP2, the elevated AEs and reusability compelled HCOM3 as more suitable for scalable waste management. The maximum AEs, i.e., 171.79, 180.47, and 177.27 mg g^-1, for Ti(IV), As(V), and V(V) at pH_op = 7.0, 3.0, and 5.0, respectively, within 5-100 mg L^-1 and at 298 K for 25 mg HCOM3 deteriorated during ternary adsorption by the antagonistic effects.

Vanadium in soil-plant system: Source, fate, toxicity, and bioremediation

Vanadium(V) is an important component of industrial activities, while it may pose toxic hazards to plants, animals, and humans at high levels. Owing to its various uses in numerous industrial processes, high amount of V is released into the soil environment. Previous literature has focused on the biogeochemistry and ecotoxicity of V in soil-plant system. Consequently, this overview presents its source, fate, phyto-uptake, phyto-toxicity, detoxification, and bioremediation based on available data, especially published from 2015 to 2020. Vanadium occurs as various chemical forms (primarily as V(V) and V(IV)) in the soil environment, and its biogeochemical behaviour is easily influenced by soil conditions including redox potential, soil pH, organic matter, and microorganisms. Vanadium mainly accumulates in plant roots with very limited translocation to shoots. However, plants such as dog's tail grass and green bean are reported to accumulate high levels of V in aboveground tissues. An insight into the processes and mechanisms that allow plants to absorb and translocate V in soil-plant system is also stressed in this overview. In plants, low levels of V have beneficial effects on plant growth and development. Nevertheless, excessive V provokes numerous deleterious effects including reducing seed germination, inhibiting root and shoot growth, depressing photosynthesis, interfering with nutrients uptake, inducing overgeneration of ROS, and leading to lipid peroxidation. Mechanisms related to detoxification strategies like sequestration in root system, compartmentation in vacuoles and cell wall, and antioxidant defence systems to endure V-induced toxicity in plants are discussed as well. The detailed knowledge of bioremediation involved in the cleanup of V-contaminated soils would immensely help understand and improve the remediation process. Furthermore, this overview outlines several research gaps requiring further investigation in order to advance our understanding of the biogeochemical roles of V in soil-plant systems.

Bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals in soil, sediments and tailings from a north Africa phosphate-mining area: Insight into human health risk assessment

The risk assessment of phosphate mining/processing industrial activities on the environment and human health is crucial to properly manage and minimize the risks over time. In this work, we studied the inhalation and dermal bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals (PTM) in different particle-size fractions of urban soil, sediments and tailings from Gafsa-Metlaoui phosphate mining area, to assess afterwards the non-carcinogenic (NCR) and carcinogenic (CR) risks for the health of local citizens and workers constantly exposed to airborne particulate matter (PM) originating from these sources of contamination. Samples were separated in particle-size fractions by centrifugation and consecutive cycles of sedimentation and decanting. The pseudo-total concentrations and bioaccessible fractions of PTM were extracted by aqua regia and in vitro bioaccessibility tests, respectively. Both sediments and tailings showed higher-than-background concentrations of PTM (mainly Cd, Zn and Cr), with a tendency to accumulate these metals in fine particles (<10 μm). In urban soil, only Cd was above the background concentration. The bioaccessibility of PTM via inhalation was significantly higher in artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF) than in simulated epithelial lung fluid (SELF): basically, Cd was the most bioaccessible metal (relative bioaccessibility up to 80%), followed by the medium-to-high bioaccessible Zn (47%), Pb (46%) and Cu (39%), and the least bioaccessible Cr (16%). In synthetic skin surface liquid (NIHS 96-10), only Cd was bioaccessible at worrying extent (20-44%). On the basis of US.EPA risk assessment, the exposure to PTM bioaccessible fractions or pseudo-total concentrations would not cause serious NCR and CR risks for human health. Significant health risks (Hazard Index >1 and CR > 10^-4), especially for children, can occur if ingestion route is also considered. The findings underline the need for adequate protection of contaminated soil, sediments and mine tailings laying nearby urban agglomerates, to reduce the health risks for inhabitants and workers of Gafsa-Metlaoui mining area.

Growth responses, accumulation, translocation and distribution of vanadium in tobacco and its potential in phytoremediation

The metal tolerance mechanism of plants is of great importance to explore the plant-based clean-up of environmental substrata contaminated by heavy metals. Indoor experiment of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) seedlings growing hydroponically in nutrient solution containing 0, 0.1, 0.5, 2.0, and 4.0 mg L-1 V was conducted. The results indicated that plant overall growth performance was significantly affected at ≥ 2.0 mg L-1 V. Oxidative stress degree as indicated by foliar O2-· and H2O2 content intensified markedly at ≥ 0.5 mg L-1 V treatments. In response, the plant activated its enzyme and non-enzyme protecting mechanism to cope with oxidative stress inflicted by vanadium. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, POD, CAT, APX, and the concentration of non-enzyme antioxidants, e.g., AsA and GSH were all conspicuously (p < 0.5 or p < 0.1) enhanced at ≥ 0.5 mg L-1 V treatments. Vanadium accumulated in leaves, stems, and roots increased with increasing vanadium level. The majority of the absorbed vanadium retained in plant root, and minor portions were transferred to aerial parts. Vanadium concentration in plant tissues ordered as root ˃ stem ˃ leaf. Translocation factors (TF) in vanadium-treated tobaccos (TF « 1) were significantly lower than that of control (TF ˃ 1). In conclusion, although vanadium at ≥ 2.0 mg L-1 inhibited plant growth, tobacco exhibited a relatively good vanadium tolerance through self-adaptive regulation and has the potential as a phytostabilizer in decontaminating the environment contaminated by vanadium.

Human health and ecological risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils of rural areas: A case study in Kurdistan Province, Iran

BACKGROUND

Agricultural soils pollution with heavy metal (loid) s (HMs) can create significant ecological and health problems. The aims of present study were to characterize HMs pollution profile of dry farmland soils in rural areas of Kurdistan province in Iran and evaluate potential associated ecological and health risks.

METHODS

Different indices of Geo-accumulation index (I_Geo), Individual contamination factor (ICF), Nemerow composite pollution index (NCPI) and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) were employed to assess the bio-accumulation of the HMs and evaluate associated ecological risks. Human health risks estimated with total hazard index (THI) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) indices based on ingestion, inhalation and dermal exposure pathways for children and adults.

RESULTS

As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb exceeded the soil standards. The spatial maps of the I_Geo showed that As pollution was at severe level in eastern part of the study region. According to the ICF results, the studied soils were extremely contaminated with As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn. Furthermore, based on the pollution indices, some of sampling sites were critically polluted by abovementioned HMs. For children and adults groups, the THI values in 13 and 97% of sampling sites were more than 1 and the TCR in 7 and 14% of sampling sites were more than 10^-4, respectively. The farmland soil pollution of the study area by As and Cr were found to be quite serious and dangerous.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study suggest that further attention should be paid by decision-makers to control the HMs pollution in the agricultural soils of the study area.

Slag dusts from Kabwe (Zambia): Contaminant mineralogy and oral bioaccessibility

The former Pb-Zn mining town of Kabwe in central Zambia is ranked amongst the worst polluted areas both in Africa and in the world. The fine dust particles from the ISF and Waelz slags deposited in Kabwe represent a health risk for the local population. Here, we combined a detailed multi-method mineralogical investigation with oral bioaccessibility testing in simulated gastric fluid (SGF; 0.4 M glycine, pH 1.5, L/S ratio of 100, 1 h, 37 °C) to evaluate the risk related to the incidental dust ingestion. The slag dust fractions contain up to 2610 mg/kg V, 6.3 wt% Pb and 19 wt% Zn. The metals are mainly bound in a slag glass and secondary phases, which formed during the slag weathering or were windblown from nearby tailing stockpiles (carbonates, Fe and Mn oxides, phosphates, vanadates). The bioaccessible fractions (BAFs) are rather high for all the main contaminants, with the BAF values generally higher for the ISF slags than for the Waelz slags: Pb (24-96%), V (21-100%) and Zn (54-81%). The results clearly indicate the potential risks related to the incidental slag dust ingestion. Even when a conservative value of the dust daily intake (100 mg/day) is considered, the daily contaminant intake significantly exceeds the tolerable daily intake limits, especially for Pb ≫ V > Zn. At higher ingestion rates, other minor contaminants (As, Cd) also become a health risk, especially for children. The slag heaps in Kabwe should be fenced to prevent local people entering and should be covered to limit the dust dispersion.

Incorporating oral bioaccessibility into human health risk assessment due to potentially toxic elements in extractive waste and contaminated soils from an abandoned mine site

The waste rock, tailings and soil around an abandoned mine site in Gorno (northwest Italy) contain elevated concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTE) exceeding the permissible limits for residential uses. Specifically, the maximum concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn were 107 mg/kg, 340 mg/kg, 1064 mg/kg, and 148 433 mg/kg, respectively. A site-specific human health risk assessment (HHRA) was conducted for residential and recreational exposure scenarios, using an approach based on Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) method, refined by incorporating oral bioaccessibility data. Oral bioaccessibility analyses were performed by simulating the human digestion process in vitro (Unified BARGE Method). Detailed analysis of oral bioaccessible fraction (BAF i.e. ratio of bioaccessible concentrations to total concentrations on <250 μm fraction) indicated BAF of As (5-33%), Cd (72-98%), Co (24-42%), Cr (3-11%), Cu (25-90%), Ni (17-60%), Pb (16-88%) and Zn (73-94%). The solid phase distribution and mineralogical analyses showed that the variation of BAF is attributed to presence of alkaline calcareous rocks and association of PTE with a variety of minerals. The HHRA for ingestion pathway, suggested that bioaccessibility-corrected cancer risk reached up to 2.7 × 10^-5 and 0.55 × 10^-5 for residential and recreational senarios respectively (acceptable level is 1 × 10^-5). The hazard index (HI) recalculated after incorporation of oral bioaccessible concentrations for a residential scenario ranged from 0.02 to 17.9. This was above the acceptable level (>1) for 50% of the samples, indicating potential human health risks. This study provides information for site-specific risk assessments and planning future research.

Distribution and superposed health risk assessment of fluorine co-effect in phosphorous chemical industrial and agricultural sources

The industrial and agricultural activities based on phosphorous can increase the F content in the surrounding area, causing a widespread adverse effect on the organisms. However, the current information on the superposed health risk posed by the multi-exposure to the F contamination in an area jointly affected by agricultural and industrial activities (DA) is limited. Herein, the F distribution in multi-environmental media and the exposure risk to humans by ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact pathways are studied in an DA. The content of soil water-soluble fluorine (WF) was higher in the DA than in the area individually affected by agricultural activities (SA). This indicated a superposed contribution of the industrial and agricultural activities to increase the F toxicity in the soil. The correlation of the soil pH and the organic matter content with the soil WF concentration in DA suggested an inter-relationship between the soil physicochemical properties and the toxicity of F in the soil by industrial and agricultural activities. Irrigation water was not a major anthropogenic source of the cropland soil F. The large variation in F concentration in the crops (101.8-195.6%) might have originated from the discrepancies in the soil F content and air F concentration. The air F pollution (0.6-1.6 μg dm^-2 d^-1) in the area particularly influenced by intensive industrial activities should be important. The exposure of residents to F was mainly from the ingestion of F-enriched crops. The higher exposure of adults to F than that of children could be attributed to more industrial and agricultural outdoor activities, larger exposure area of the skin, and more daily ingestion of F-enriched food by adults. Overall, present insights into the distribution of and the multi-exposure to F may be beneficial for decreasing the adverse F effects on the residents in DAs worldwide.

Mechanism of vanadium(IV) resistance of the strains isolated from a vanadium titanomagnetite mining region

Microbial treatment for vanadium contamination of soils is a favorable and environment-friendly method. However, information of the resistant mechanism of the strains in soils to vanadium, especially to tetravalent vanadium [vanadium(IV)], is still limited. Herein, potential of the vanadium(IV) biosorption and biotransformation of the strains (4K1, 4K2, 4K3 and 4K4) which were capable of tolerating vanadium(IV) was determined. For biosorption, the bioadsorption and the bioabsorption of vanadium(IV) occur on the bacterial cell wall and within the cell, respectively, were taken into consideration. Comparison of the vanadium(IV) adsorbed on the bacterial cell walls and remained in the cells after sorption indicated the major bacterial vanadium(IV) sorption role of the bioadsorption which was at least one order of magnitude higher than the bioabsorption amount. Isotherm study using various isotherm models revealed a monolayer and a multilayer vanadium(IV) biosorption by 4K2 and the others (4K1, 4K3 and 4K4), respectively. Higher biosorption was observed in acidic conditions than in alkaline conditions, and the maximum biosorption was 2.41, 9.35, 7.76 and 8.44 mg g^-1 observed at pH 6 for 4K1, at pH 3 for 4K2, and at pH 4 for 4K3 and 4K4, respectively. At the present experimental range of the initial vanadium(IV) concentration, optimal biosorption capacity of the bacteria was observed at the vanadium(IV) level of 100-250 mg L^-1. Different biotransformation level of vanadium(IV) in soils by the stains was observed during a 28-d pot incubation of the soils mixed with the strains, which can be attributed to the discrepancy of both soil properties and bacterial species. Present study can help to fill up the gaps of the insufficient knowledge of the vanadium(IV) resistant mechanism of the strains in soils.

Adsorption-desorption and co-migration of vanadium on colloidal kaolinite

Vanadium (V) pollution in soil has been widely noted, while knowledge about the effect of soil colloid on migration of V is scarce. Batch adsorption-desorption and transportation of the colloid-adsorbed V in columns packed with quartz sand under various environment conditions were carried out to explore the retention and transportation of V by colloidal kaolinite. Batch adsorption-desorption studies show that the adsorption of V by the colloidal kaolinite was mainly specific adsorption and redox played a limited role in the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of the colloidal kaolinite was 712.4 mg g^-1, and about 5.9-8.7% of the adsorbed V could be desorbed. Both the adsorption-desorption and migration of V with colloidal kaolinite were highly ambient condition dependent. The column studies show that V was highly mobile in the saturated porous media. An easier transfer of V with an increase in pH, IS, and velocity of flow was noted. However, the increase of IS lead to the blockage of the colloidal kaolinite transportation. The recovery rate of the colloidal kaolinite at pH 7 and 9 was 2.0 and 2.1 times that at pH 5, respectively. The migration of colloidal-adsorbed V in sand column preceded that of V ion, but more colloidal-bound V than V ion remained in the column. Lack of consideration of the combination and co-transportation of V and colloidal kaolinite will lead to an overestimation of the risk of V to deeper soil profiles and groundwater. Aqueous Vanadate Removal by Iron(II)-Bearing Phases under Anoxic Conditions

Vanadium contamination is a growing environmental hazard worldwide. Aqueous vanadate (H_xV^VO₄^(3-x)-_(aq)) concentrations are often controlled by surface complexation with metal (oxyhydr)oxides in oxic environments. However, the geochemical behavior of this toxic redox-sensitive oxyanion in anoxic environments is poorly constrained. Here, we describe results of batch experiments to determine kinetics and mechanisms of aqueous H₂V^VO₄^- (100 μM) removal under anoxic conditions in suspensions (2.0 g L^-1) of magnetite, siderite, pyrite, and mackinawite. We present results of parallel experiments using ferrihydrite (2.0 g L^-1) and Fe²⁺_(aq) (200 μM) for comparison. Siderite and mackinawite reached near complete removal (46 μmol g^-1) of aqueous vanadate after 3 h and rates were generally consistent with ferrihydrite, whereas magnetite removed 18 μmol g^-1 of aqueous vanadate after 48 h and uptake by pyrite was limited. Removal during reaction with Fe²⁺_(aq) was observed after 8 h, concomitant with precipitation of secondary Fe phases. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed V(V) reduction to V(IV) and formation of bidentate corner-sharing surface complexes on magnetite and siderite, and with Fe²⁺_(aq) reaction products. These data also suggest that V(IV) is incorporated into the mackinawite structure. Overall, we demonstrate that Fe(II)-bearing phases can promote aqueous vanadate attenuation and, therefore, limit dissolved V concentrations in anoxic environments.

Characteristic of adsorption, desorption, and co-transport of vanadium on humic acid colloid

Understanding the interactions between humic acid colloid (HAC) and vanadium (V) in soils is of great importance in forecasting the behaviors and fates of V in the soil and groundwater systems. This study investigated the characteristics and factors that affect V adsorption-desorption by the HAC; meanwhile, we also explored the co-transport of the HAC and V in a saturated porous media. Scanning Electronic Microscopy micrographs showed the variation of morphological features on the surface of the HAC before and after V adsorption. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra revealed that the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, carbon-carbon double bond, amino, and aromatic ring on the HAC participated in V adsorption. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics of the HAC was better described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic models. The adsorption-desorption was strongly dependent on the initial V concentration, solution pH, and temperature. The maximum adsorption amount was 861.17 mg g^-1 by 200 mg L^-1 HAC at the initial V concentration of 500 mg L^-1, and the corresponding desorption amount was 15.13 mg g^-1. These results showed that the HAC had high fixation capacity of V in soil. In addition, the HAC sped up the mobility of V; however, it decreased mass of migration of V in the saturated quartz sand column. These results are expected to provide insight into the potential impact of HAC on geochemical behaviours of V in vulnerable ecosystems.

Microplastic serves as a potential vector for Cr in an in-vitro human digestive model

Microplastics (MPs), polymer particles capable of adsorbing heavy metals from ambient environment, have been found in diverse human food resources. Through the consumption of MPs, heavy metals adsorbed on MPs might be transported into human body. This study aims to explore the behavior of heavy metal-contaminated MPs in human digestive system which is not previously researched. Firstly, a chromium (Cr) adsorption/desorption study was conducted with four commonly used nondegradable MPs [polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS)] as well as one degradable MP (polylactic, PLA). Then, the whole digestive system in-vitro method (WDSM), a systematic model including mouth, gastric, small intestine, and large intestine digestive phases, was conducted on the Cr-loaded MPs. Additionally, the bioaccessibilities and hazard quotients (HQs) of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) were evaluated. Among five MPs, although PLA showed the weakest adsorption capacity for Cr, the Cr(VI) bioaccessibilities for PLA reached the highest values of 19.9%, 15.6% and 3.9% in gastric, small intestinal and large intestinal phases, respectively. The bioaccessibilities of Cr(VI) in gastric phase were significantly higher than those in other phases, while no Cr release from MPs was detected in the mouth phase. In gastric phase, the bioaccessibilities of Cr(VI) were significantly higher than those of Cr(III) in the gastric phase, and both of them approached to a similar level in intestinal phases. In the WDSM, the HQs of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on MPs were lower than the critical level for both adults and children. Based on the measured bioaccessibilities, the maximum daily total Cr intake for different human groups (female children, male children, female adults and male adults) through MP consumption was estimated from 0.50 to 1.18 μg/day. In general, the five tested MPs were potential to serve as Cr vectors in the WDSM.

Health risk assessment of fluorine in fertilizers from a fluorine contaminated region based on the oral bioaccessibility determined by Biomimetic Whole Digestion-Plasma in-vitro Method (BWDPM)

Due to potential adverse effects of excessive fluorine (F), interests regarding considerable accumulation of F in agricultural soils from application of fertilizers are increasing continually. However, less detailed information of hazard and risk of F in fertilizers to human directly by hand-to-mouth pathway can be obtained. Herein, the bioaccessibility of F (F_bio) in fertilizers is determined by Biomimetic Whole Digestion-Plasma in-vitro Method (BWDPM), which is developed to detect the behaviour of bioaccessible F in both the whole digestive system and plasma for the first time. Observations of higher F_bio in small intestinal phases (4.35-56.33%), large intestine (1.01-40.52%) and plasma (8.07-66.70%) yielded them as the major phases which are faced with higher exposure risk of F. Compared with phosphate fertilizer, more bioaccessible F was observed in compound fertilizer. Some studied factors, such as sweat and food, yield insignificant influences on F_bio, whereas can affect the exposure estimations of F considerably. Exposure risks based on F_bio of fertilizers should be highly concerned, especially the occupational exposure to local farmers. In a word, more explicit and realistic information of the potential risk of F on human health could be obtained by the introduction of F_bio.

Bioaccessibility and human health risk assessment of metal(loid)s in soil from an e-waste open burning site in Agbogbloshie, Accra, Ghana

Environmental pollution and human health issues due to unrestricted electronic waste (e-waste) recycling activities have been reported at a number of locations. Among different e-waste recycling techniques, open burning of e-waste releases diverse metal(loid)s into the environment, which has aroused concern worldwide. In human health risk assessments (HHRAs), oral ingestion of soil can be a major route of exposure to many immobile soil contaminants. In vitro assays are currently being developed and validated to avoid overestimation of pollutants absorbed by the human body when calculating total pollutant concentrations in HHRAs. In this study, Cu, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb bioaccessibility in polluted soils (n = 10) from e-waste open burning sites at Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana, was assessed using an in vitro assay, the physiologically based extraction test. A bioaccessibility-corrected HHRA was then conducted to estimate the potential health risks to local inhabitants. The in vitro results (%) varied greatly among the different metal(loid)s (Cu: 1.3-60, As: 1.3-40, Cd: 4.2-67, Sb: 0.7-85, Pb: 4.1-57), and also showed marked variance between the gastric phase and small intestinal phase. The particle sizes of soil samples and chemical forms of metal(loid)s also influenced bioaccessibility values. Using these bioaccessibility values, both the hazard index and carcinogenic risk were calculated. The hazard index was above the threshold value (>1) for 5/10 samples, indicating a potential health risk to local inhabitants.
