Response of freshwater sediment archaeal community to metal spill

Promoting the denitrification process by heavy metals in Liaohe Estuary sediment

The impact of heavy metal ions on the biodenitrification process remains unknown, which is the key to understand the nitrogen cycle in estuarine areas. Here, denitrification rate and the abundance of five denitrifying enzyme genes (narG, nirK, napA, norB and nosZ) in Liaohe Estuary sediments were examined, and the community structure of nirK denitrifying bacteria was also analyzed. The results demonstrate a significant positive correlation between heavy metal content (Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cr) and the denitrification rate, and the abundance of napA/norB (periplasmic nitrate reductase and nitric-oxide reductase) in sediments. The dominant narG denitrifiers were Pseudomonas, Hydrogenophaga, and Serratia known to be tolerant to heavy metal pollution. Sediment particle size, NO3-, NO2-, Zn2+, and Cd2+ were the key factors influencing the denitrifying community structure. These findings suggest that heavy metals may enhance the aerobic denitrification process in sediments and mitigate the adverse effects of high dissolved oxygen levels.

Impacts of o-cresol spill on composition and function of river sediment and soil microbial communities

o-Cresol is a toxic substance with strong irritating and corrosive effects on skin and mucous membranes. To date, information on the effects of o-cresol on microbial communities in the natural environment is very limited. In the present study, 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomic technique were carried out to elucidate the effects of the o-cresol spill on microbial communities in river sediments and nearby soils. o-Cresol spill induced the increase in the relative abundance of phyla Planctomycetes and Gemmatimonadetes, suggesting their resilience to o-cresol-induced stress. Uncultured Gemmatimonadetes genera and the MND1 genus exhibited enrichment, while the Pseudomonas genus dominated across all samples, indicating their potential pivotal roles in adapting to the o-cresol spill. Moreover, o-cresol spill impaired the metabolic functions of microbes but triggered their defense mechanisms. Under o-cresol pressure, microbial functions related to carbon fixation were upregulated and functions associated with sulfur metabolism were downregulated. In addition, the o-cresol spill led to an increase in functional genes related to the conversion of o-cresol to 3-methylcatechol. Several genes involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds were also identified, potentially contributing to the biodegradation of o-cresol. This study provides fresh insights into the repercussions of an abrupt o-cresol spill on microbial communities in natural environments, shedding light on their adaptability, defense mechanisms, and biodegradation potential.

Changes in soil microbe-mediated carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling during spontaneous succession in abandoned PbZn mining areas

The mechanism through which soil microorganisms mediate carbon and nutrient cycling during mine wasteland restoration remained unknown. Using soil metagenome sequencing, we investigated the dynamic changes in soil microbial potential metabolic functions during the transition from biological soil crusts (BSC) to mixed broad-conifer forest (MBF) in a typical PbZn mine. The results showed soil microorganisms favored carbon sequestration through anaerobic and microaerobic pathways, predominantly using efficient, low-energy pathways during succession. Genes governing carbon degradation and aerobic respiration increased by 19.56 % and 24.79 %, respectively, reflecting change toward more efficient and intensive soil carbon utilization in late succession. Nitrogen-cycling genes mediated by soil microorganisms met their maximum influence during early succession (sparse grassland, SGL), leading to a respective increase of 75.29 % and 76.81 % in the net potential nitrification rate and total nitrogen content. Mantel and correlation analyses indicated that TOC, TN, Zn and Cd contents were the main factors affecting the soil carbon and phosphorus cycles. Soil AP content emerged as the primary influencer of genes associated with the nitrogen cycle. These results shed light on the dynamic shifts in microbial metabolic activities during succession, providing a genetic insight into biogeochemical cycling mechanisms and underscoring crucial factors influencing soil biogeochemical processes in mining regions.

Effects of microbubble pretreatment on physiochemical and microbial properties of excess activated sludge

Fast increased amount of excess activated sludge (EAS) from wastewater treatment plants has aroused universal concerns on its environmental risks and demands for appropriate treatments, while effective treatment is dependent upon proper pretreatment. In this study, air-supplied microbubbles (air-MBs) with generated size of 25.18 to 28.25 μm were used for EAS pretreatment. Different durations (30, 60, 90, and 120 s) yielded sludge with varied physiochemical conditions, and 60 s decreased sludge oxidation status and significantly increased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content. Soluble, loosely-bound, and tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances (SEPS, LB-EPS, and TB-EPS) were extracted from the sludge through a stepwise approach and examined through three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and quantitative analysis. The results showed that 60- and 120-s treatments generated stronger fluorescence intensities on dissolved organic matters (DOMs) of protein-like and fulvic acid in LB-EPS and TB-EPS, which indicated the decrease of counterparts in EAS, and therefore facilitated sludge dewaterability and reduction. The dominant microbial communities in EAS, including Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteriota, were not significantly affected by MB pretreatment. The results collectively revealed the effects of MB pretreatment on EAS and indicated that MBs could be an effective pretreatment technique for EAS treatment process.

Distinct assembly processes and environmental adaptation of abundant and rare archaea in Arctic marine sediments

Revealing the ecological processes and environmental adaptation of abundant and rare archaea is a central, but poorly understood, topic in ecology. Here, abundant and rare archaeal diversity, community assembly processes and co-occurrence patterns were comparatively analyzed in Arctic marine sediments. Our findings revealed that the rare taxa exhibited significantly higher diversity compared to the abundant taxa. Additionally, the abundant taxa displayed stronger environmental adaptation than the rare taxa. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the rare taxa developed more interspecies interactions and modules in response to environmental disturbance. Furthermore, the community assembly of abundant and rare taxa in sediments was primarily controlled by stochastic and deterministic processes, respectively. These findings provide valuable insights into the archaeal community assembly processes and significantly contribute to a deeper understanding of the environmental adaptability of abundant and rare taxa in Arctic marine sediments.

Occurrence, distribution and their correlation with different parameters of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in lakes of China: A review

The exposure of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as potential threats to the environment has raised global concern. This study provides discussion on the emergence and distribution of antibiotics and ARGs in lakes. The correlation of critical water quality parameters with antibiotics and ARGs are evaluated along with their integrative potential ecological risk. Sulfonamides (∼67.18 ng/L) and quinolones (∼77.62 ng/L) were the dominant antibiotics distributed in the aqueous phase, while the quinolones and tetracyclines were the primary contamination factors in the sediment phase. The temporal and spatial distribution revealed that the antibiotic concentrations were significantly lower in summer than other seasons and the lakes in Hebei and Jiangsu provinces exhibited the highest antibiotic pollution. The detection frequency and relative abundance of sul1 gene have been the highest among all detected ARGs. Moreover, ARGs in lakes were driven by several factors, with bacterial communities and mobile genetic elements that prevailed the positive distribution of ARGs. Antibiotics have been identified as critical factors in inducing the propagation of ARGs, which could be further enhanced by chemical contaminants (e.g., heavy metals and nutrients). Involving the risk assessment strategies, research attention should be paid on three antibiotics (ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin) to strengthen the policy and management of Baiyangdian Lake and East Dongting Lake. This review analysis will provide in-depth understanding to the researchers and policy-makers in formulation of strategies for remediation of antibiotic contamination in the lakes.

Effects of capping on microbial populations and contaminant immobilization in an old unlined landfill

This research aimed at evaluating the effects of capping on the mitigation of impacts generated by a closed unlined landfill in São Carlos, SP, Brazil. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses (16S rRNA sequencing) of buried solid waste samples were performed, in capped and uncapped areas. Even though leachate pockets could still be encountered in capped areas, the capping construction reduced oxygen availability and created more reducing conditions, propitiating the development of sulfate-reducing bacteria and possibly contributing to the precipitation of the metals Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, As, and Zn as metal sulfides, causing their immobilization. The microbial populations adapted to the anaerobic conditions created under capped zones belonged to the phyla Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, and Euryarchaeota and the genera Methanosaeta, Hydrogenispora, Smithella, and Gelria. Differently, the phyla Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were more abundant in samples from the uncapped zones, in which the abundance of different genera varied homogeneously. Methanogenic activity was not impaired by the intervention measure, as assessed by the specific methanogenic activity (SMA). Capping of old unlined landfills brings benefits to the immobilization of metals and does not impair microbial degradation, being effective for the mitigation of impacts on soils and water resources.

Metagenomic insights into the influence of thallium spill on sediment microbial community

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic metal. The release of Tl into the natural environment can pose a potential threat to organisms. So far, information about the impact of Tl on indigenous microorganisms is still very limited. In addition, there has been no report on how sudden Tl spill influences the structure and function of the microbial community. Therefore, this study explored the response of river sediment microbiome to a Tl spill. Residual T1 in the sediment significantly decreased bacterial community diversity. The increase in the abundance of Bacteroidetes in all Tl- impacted sediments suggested the advantage of Bacteroidetes to resist Tl pressure. Under T1 stress, microbial genes related to carbon fixation and gene cysH participating in assimilatory sulfate reduction were down-regulated, while genes related to nitrogen cycling were up-regulated. After T1 spill, increase in both metal resistance genes (MRGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was observed in Tl-impacted sediments. Moreover, the abundance of MRGs and ARGs was significantly correlated with sediment Tl concentration, implying the positive effect of Tl contamination on the proliferation of these resistance genes. Procrustes analysis suggested a significant congruence between profiles of MRGs and bacterial communities. Through LEfSe and co-occurrence network analysis, Trichococcus, Polaromonas, and Arenimonas were identified to be tolerant and resistant to Tl pollution. The colocalization analysis of contigs indicated the co-effects of selection and transfer for MRGs/ARGs were important reasons for the increase in the microbial resistance in Tl-impacted sediments. This study added new insights into the effect of Tl spill on microbial community and highlighted the role of heavy metal spill in the increase of both heavy metal and antibiotic resistance genes.

Response of soil microbial communities to natural radionuclides along specific-activity gradients

Understanding the response of soil microbial community to abnormal natural radionuclides is important to maintain soil ecological function, but the underlying mechanism of tolerance and survival of microbes is poorly studied. The effects of natural radionuclides on the topsoil microbial communities in anomalous natural radiation area were investigated in this work, and it was found that microbial community composition was significantly influenced by the specific-activities of natural radionuclides. The results revealed that relative abundances of 10 major microbial phyla and genera displayed different patterns along specific-activity gradients, including decreasing, increasing, hump-shaped, U-shaped, and similar sinusoidal or cosine wave trends, which indicated that the natural radionuclides were the predominant driver for change of microbial community structure. At the phylum and genus level, microbial communities were divided into two special groups according to the tolerance to natural radionuclides, such as ²³⁸U and ²³²Th, including tolerant and sensitive groups. Taken together, our findings suggest that the high specific-activities of natural radionuclides can obviously drive changes in microbial communities, providing a possibility for future studies on the microbial tolerance genes and bioremediation strains.

Effect of asparagine, corncob biochar and Fe(II) on anaerobic biological treatment under low temperature: Enhanced performance and microbial community dynamic

To ensure the efficiency of anaerobic biological treatment technology at lower temperature will expand the application of anaerobic reactor in practical industrial wastewater treatment. Through a batch experiment, asparagine, corncob biochar and Fe²⁺ were selected as strengthening measures to analyze the effects on the anaerobic sludge characteristics, microbial community and functional genes in the low temperature (15 °C). Results showed that after 21 days, asparagine began to promote chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by the anaerobic treatment, with highest COD removal rate (81.65%) observed when the asparagine concentration was 1 mmol/L. When adding 3 g biochar, 25 mg/L Fe²⁺, and the combination of biochar and Fe²⁺, the COD removal rates reached to 82%, 92% and 97%, respectively. In the presence of asparagine, both biochar and Fe²⁺ alone or in combination increased the activity of protease (16.35%-120.71%) and coenzyme F₄₂₀ (5.63%-130.2%). The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Methanobacterium increased in the presence of biochar and Fe²⁺. In addition, the KEGG results showed that the combined addition of biochar and Fe²⁺ enhanced bacterial replication and repair and promoted amino acid metabolism of archaea.

Effects of PFOA on the physicochemical properties of anaerobic granular sludge: Performance evaluation, microbial community and metagenomic analysis

The impact of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on the anaerobic granular sludge was evaluated through a sequential batch experiment. Results showed that PFOA inhibited the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of the sludge and the dosage of 100 mg/L PFOA was more obvious. However, this negative effect would gradually weaken with the adaptation of microorganisms. For the 50 mg/L PFOA experimental group, the proteins content in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the anaerobic granular sludge increased from 1.53 mg/g to 3.65 mg/g. Meanwhile, PFOA inhibited the 2-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyltetrazolium chloride (INT) activity of the anaerobic granular sludge. Furthermore, 100 mg/L PFOA reduced the relative abundance of Proteobacteria by 5.99% and Longilinea by 1.11%. 100 mg/L PFOA mainly restricted COD removal by affecting the glycolysis process, with the abundances of glucokinase and pyruvate kinase reduced by 8% and 28.1%, respectively. Compared with the control group, the relative abundance of the methyl-coenzyme M reductase alpha subunit increased by 84%, respectively, under 100 mg/L PFOA.

Role of rotating speed on the stability of a self-sustaining algal-bacterial photo-granules process

The effects of rotating speed (120, 130, 140 and 150 rpm) of a photo-reactor on the self-sustaining algal-bacterial photo-granules sludge (ABPG) was investigated in this study. The ABPG process maintained good granular stability at 140 rpm with an integrity coefficient of 3.0% and excellent nutrient removal. The increases of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content, the portions of α-helix (32.37%) in the secondary protein structure, and the relative abundance of functional bacteria (e.g. Candidatus_Competibacter), contributed to the maintenance of granular structure stability. However, the lower rotating speed (120 and 130 rpm) resulted in slow bacterial growth and reproduction while a higher rotating speed (150 rpm) caused the disintegration of photo-granules. Overall, the results reveal the influencing mechanisms of photo-reactor rotating speed on the self-sustaining ABPG process and provide an effective approach to maintain the system stability.

Metagenomic analysis reveals the response of microbial community in river sediment to accidental antimony contamination

The mining of deposits containing metals like antimony (Sb) causes serious environmental issues that threaten human health and ecological systems. However, information on the effect of Sb on freshwater sediment microorganisms and the mechanism of microbial Sb resistance is still very limited. This was the first attempt to explore microbial communities in river sediments impacted by accidental Sb spill. Metagenomic analysis revealed the high relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria in all the studied river sediments, showing their advantage in resistance to Sb pollution. Under Sb stress, microbial functions related to DNA repair and ion transport were enhanced. Increase in heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs), particularly Sb transport-related arsB gene, was observed at Sb spill-impacted sites. HMRGs were significantly correlated with ARGs and MGEs, and the abundant MGEs at Sb spill-impacted sites might contribute to the increase in HMRGs and ARGs via horizontal gene transfer. Deinococcus, Sphingopyxis and Paracoccus were identified as potential tolerant genera under Sb pressure and might be related to the transmission of HMRGs and ARGs. This study can add new insights towards the effect of accidental metal spill on sediment microbial community.

Effects of antibiotics and heavy metals on denitrification in shallow eutrophic lakes

Antibiotic and heavy metal residues in shallow lakes caused by aquaculture and human activities such as sewage discharge have attracted much attention and public concern. However, mechanisms by which these environmental pollutants affect the microorganism-mediated biogeochemical cycle are unknown. This study focused on the effects of antibiotics, heavy metal, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on denitrification in shallow lakes. The results showed that antibiotics and metal elements had inhibitory effects on denitrification, whereas AGRs exhibited stimulating effects. Specifically, the enrofloxacin concentration showed a significant negative correlation with the copy number of denitrifying bacteria, whereas the copy number of the ARGs sulI, sulII, and tetG showed significant positive correlations. In addition, tetG was closely related to the community structure of nirS-type denitrifiers, and nirS-type denitrifiers were significantly correlated with the potential denitrification rate (PDR). Furthermore, the ARGs sulI, sulII, and tetG were positively correlated with PDR (P < 0.05). By contrast, the metal elements arsenic, manganese, cobalt, and antimony were negatively correlated with the copy number of denitrifying bacteria. Arsenic was significantly correlated with the community composition of nirK-type denitrifiers, but nirK-type denitrifiers did not show a significant correlation with the PDR. This work extends our understanding of the effects of antibiotics and heavy metals on denitrification, but further studies are needed to determine the interaction effects of pollutants.

Correlating bacterial and archaeal community with efficiency of a coking wastewater treatment plant employing anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process in coal industry

Coking wastewater (CWW) contains various complex pollutants, and biological treatment processes are frequently applied in the coking wastewater treatment plants (CWWTPs). The present work is to evaluate the contaminants removal of a full-scale CWWTP with an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process (A/A/O), to reveal function of bacterial and archaeal community involved in different bioreactors, and to clarify the relationship between the performance and microbial community. Illumina Miseq sequencing of bacteria showed that β-proteobacteria dominated in three bioreactors with relative abundance of 60.2%~81.7%. 75.2% of sequences were assigned to Petrobacter in the bioreactor A1, while Thiobacillus dominated in A2 and O with relative abundance of 31.8% and 38.7%, respectively. Illumina Miseq sequencing of archaea revealed a high diversity of methanogens existed in A1 and A2 activated sludge. Moreover, Halostagnicola was the dominant archaea in A1 and A2 activated sludge with relative abundance of 41.8% and 66.5%, respectively. Function predicted analysis explored that function of bacteria was similar to that of archaea but the relative abundance differed from each other. A putative biodegradation model of CWW treatment in A/A/O process indicated that A1 and A2 activated sludge mainly reduced carbohydrate, protein, TN, phenol and cyanide, as well as methane production. Bacteria in the bioreactor O were responsible for aerobic biotransformation of residual carbohydrates, refractory organics and nitrification. The redundancy analysis (RDA) further revealed that removal of COD, TN, and NO₃^--N, phenol and cyanides were highly correlated with some anaerobic bacteria and archaea, whereas the transformation of NH₄⁺-N was positively correlated with some aerobic bacteria.

Rapid initiation of methanogenesis in the anaerobic digestion of food waste by acclimatizing sludge with sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron

Although coupling of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) into anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW) for improving methanogenesis has been reported, the specific role of S-nZVI during start-up process and its influence on subsequent methanogenesis and system stability remains unknown. In this study, S-nZVI was added into the unacclimatized sludge system to investigate its influence on microbial acclimatization and methanogenic performance. During acclimatization phase, CH₄ production improved and VFAs transformation facilitated with the addition of S-nZVI. Furthermore, enzymatic activity analysis and electrochemical measurements presented direct evidence that electron transfer capacity of acclimatized sludge was significantly improved. S-nZVI favored the transition of microbial community to a robust and specialized population. During evaluation phase, acclimatized sludge still exhibited strong methanogenic ability, but the microbial community inevitably changed under the stress of FW. This research provides a novel perspective on initiating anaerobic digestion of FW for shorter start-up time and stronger methanogenesis.

Expanding ecological assessment by integrating microorganisms into routine freshwater biomonitoring

Bioindication has become an indispensable part of water quality monitoring in most countries of the world, with the presence and abundance of bioindicator taxa, mostly multicellular eukaryotes, used for biotic indices. In contrast, microbes (bacteria, archaea and protists) are seldom used as bioindicators in routine assessments, although they have been recognized for their importance in environmental processes. Recently, the use of molecular methods has revealed unexpected diversity within known functional groups and novel metabolic pathways that are particularly important in energy and nutrient cycling. In various habitats, microbial communities respond to eutrophication, metals, and natural or anthropogenic organic pollutants through changes in diversity and function. In this review, we evaluated the common trends in these changes, documenting that they have value as bioindicators and can be used not only for monitoring but also for improving our understanding of the major processes in lotic and lentic environments. Current knowledge provides a solid foundation for exploiting microbial taxa, community structures and diversity, as well as functional genes, in novel monitoring programs. These microbial community measures can also be combined into biotic indices, improving the resolution of individual bioindicators. Here, we assess particular molecular approaches complemented by advanced bioinformatic analysis, as these are the most promising with respect to detailed bioindication value. We conclude that microbial community dynamics are a missing link important for our understanding of rapid changes in the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems, and should be addressed in the future environmental monitoring of freshwater ecosystems.

Influence of biodegradable polybutylene succinate and non-biodegradable polyvinyl chloride microplastics on anammox sludge: Performance evaluation, suppression effect and metagenomic analysis

Microplastics (MPs) has been widely detected in wastewater treatment plants. However, there is a lack of research on its influence on anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process. Therefore, the effects of polybutylene succinate (PBS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on the nitrogen removal performance, microbial community and metabolites of anammox sludge were investigated. Results showed that PBS and PVC MPs reduced the nitrite removal efficiency of the anammox sludge, and PVC1 (0.1 g/L PVC) group was the most significant at 19.2 %. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra showed that PBS2 (0.5 g/L PBS) group increased the polysaccharide content in the anammox sludge. This may be because of the byproduct, which was produce during the biodegradation of PBS MPs, and decrease the agglomeration capacity of sludge, so as to increase the mass transfer. PBS2 group reduced the relative abundance of Methanosaeta (10.18 %) and the methane modules, and stimulated the anammox bacteria Ca. Brocadia (1.17 %) and the relative nitrogen metabolism modules. PVC2 group reduced the relative abundance of Ca. Brocadia (3.02 %), while was enriched Methanosaeta (2.1 %). Non-biodegradable PVC MPs was more harmful to anammox sludge, which would draw attention to the entry of PVC MPs into the anammox system.

Long-term impact of accidental pollution on the distribution and risks of metals and metalloids in the sediment of the Longjiang River, China

In January 2012, a serious accident polluted the Longjiang River with high concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and other concomitant metals and metalloids in the water. After emergency treatment (i.e., the addition of coagulants), these metals and metalloids were transferred from the water into the sediment through precipitation of the flocculent materials produced. In this study, the long-term distribution of six metals and metalloids in the sediment of the Longjiang River was investigated and their ecological risks were assessed. Approximately 1 year after the accident (i.e., late 2012), the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites decreased to 25.6 ± 19.5 mg/kg, which was 8 times higher than that of 3.16 ± 3.18 mg/kg in the upstream reference sites. In 2016 and 2017, the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites further decreased to 4.91 ± 2.23 and 6.27 ± 4.27 mg/kg, respectively. Compared with late 2012, the amounts of Zn, Pb, and Cu obviously decreased in 2016 and 2017, whereas there were no obvious differences in the As and Hg amounts during 3 years considered. Among metals and metalloids, the average contribution of Cd to the potential ecological risk index (RI) was 90%, 69%, and 70% in the affected areas in 2012, 2016, and 2017, respectively, suggesting that Cd was the most important factor affecting the ecological risk of metals in the Longjiang River. It should be noted that the average contribution of Hg to RI in the affected areas increased from 8% in 2012 to 25% and 23% in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The sequence of contribution of six elements was Cd > Hg > As>Pb > Cu ≈ Zn. A high ecological risk of metals and metalloids was found in the sediments of two reservoirs, probably owing to the barrier effect of the dam. This study will be useful for the environmental management of rivers affected by accidental pollution of metals and metalloids.

Reproduction of sediment deposition and prediction of 137Cs concentration in the major urban rivers of Tokyo

Radioactive caesium- 137 (¹³⁷Cs) can be used as a tracer to infer sediment dynamics due not only to its long radioactive half-life but also its affinity for fine sediment. A novel advanced interpolation assessment was conducted to examine radionuclide activity in terraced land covered with volcanic ash soil in Tokyo, Japan, which had a time-dependent input function and incorporated the effects of mixed-sediment particle dynamic behaviour on radioactive decay. In addition, transport parameters derived from Chernobyl measurements were applied as predictors of the long-term contamination of the cardinal urban rivers by the fallout from the Tokyo Electric Power Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in 2011. The behaviour of suspended sediment substances, incorporating the effects of deposition and pickup, was assessed using a mixed-sediment particle dynamics model. The concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs adsorbed on fine sediment particles of each size fraction were determined. Removal of ¹³⁷Cs from the cardinal urban river channel had significant effects on both long-term decline, including extreme flash flood events, and the dynamic and time-dependent behaviours of interspersed ¹³⁷Cs and sediment activity. A novel advanced interpolation assessment method was used to examine radionuclide activity in terraced land covered with volcanic ash soil in Tokyo, Japan. The assessment procedure has a time-dependent input function and incorporates the effects of mixed-sediment particle dynamics on this time dependence. The results indicated that sediment and ¹³⁷Cs concentrations could decline more rapidly than observed in the Fukushima and Chernobyl regions. This rate of decrease depended on terraces covered with volcanic ash soil, which incorporated the effects of fine sediment behaviour for particle adsorption. In addition, comparatively large impacts were observed during extreme flash flooding events, which were associated with the land cover of the major urban river catchments in Tokyo. This work provides a new perspective for understanding ¹³⁷Cs behaviour associated with reproduction of sediment deposition and prediction of ¹³⁷Cs concentration in the major urban rivers of Tokyo, incorporating the effects of baseline ¹³⁷Cs behaviour with the impact of sediment particle adsorption in a volcanic ash soil-covered terrace.

Performance and functional microbial communities of denitrification process of a novel MFC-granular sludge coupling system

The performance, microbial communities and functional gene metabolism of the novel microbial fuel cell (MFC)-granular sludge coupling system was investigated. The results showed that COD and nitrogen removal can be up to 1.3-2.0 kg COD/L, 20-30 mg NO2--N/L, and 60-70 mg NO3--N/L, respectively. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Firmicutes were the dominant bacterial phyla, and the denitrification process was mainly consisted of the dominant denitrifying bacteria: Thauera (26.21%) and Pseudomonas (14.79%) in the first compartment, combining with denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation bacteria: NC10 phylum of 0.072% (the first compartment) and 0.089% (the fourth compartment), Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera of 0.044% (the first compartment) and 0.048% (the fourth compartment). According to functional gene classification for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, metabolism was the main cluster for the whole sequence in the KEGG (7.17-11.41%), indicating that the dominant metabolic pathway played an important role in the degradation of pollutants.

Response of sediment bacterial communities to the drainage of wastewater from aquaculture ponds in different seasons

Bacterial communities play an important role in diffuse sediment pollution in aquaculture farms. Previous studies have revealed the short-term influence of wastewater drainage on the bacterial communities but the seasonal response of the sediment bacterial communities to wastewater drainage from aquaculture farms remains unclear. This study used the 16S rRNA approach to explore the profiles of bacterial communities over four seasons in a typical crab aquaculture farm that included a pond and an outlet ditch. Nineteen sediment samples and an equal number of water samples were collected and analysed during spring, summer, autumn, and winter during 2018-19. Our results showed that Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroides were the predominant phyla in aquaculture pond sediment with the relative abundance of 28.95%, 17.32%, and 15.31%, respectively. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroides was higher in autumn and winter, and the relative abundance of Chloroflexi was highest in spring. The Shannon diversity index value ranged from 6.17 to 9.30 and showed significant positive correlation (P < 0.01) with the concentrations of TN, NH₄⁺-N, and TP in the water. The variation in the bacterial community and relative abundance in outlet ditch sediment were consistent with those in the pond sediment. Our results show that determinisation of the bacterial community composition in the outlet ditch sediment provides a novel tool to monitor watersheds sensitive to the influence of aquacultures.
