Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical technology is considered a very effective industrial wastewater treatment method for its high treatment efficiency, high current efficiency, low energy consumption, and, especially, ability to completely mineralize nonbiodegradable organic contaminants. Particle electrodes, which are the fundamental components of 3D electrochemical technology, have multiple functions in the electrochemical reaction process. Various types of particle electrodes have been created and applied for wastewater treatment. Herein, we present a thorough analysis of the research and development of particle electrodes used for electrocatalyzing pollutants. Initially, reactor designs, factors affecting the removal efficiency of pollutants and degradation mechanisms are introduced. In particular, a detailed investigation is conducted into the selection of particle electrode materials and the roles they play in the 3D electrochemical treatment of wastewater. Subsequently, the degradation efficiency and energy consumption associated with 3D electrochemical technology for different pollutants are investigated. Finally, the directions and outlook for further studies on particle electrodes are discussed. We believe that this review will offer a useful perspective on the development and application of particle electrodes for wastewater purification.

Abstract
Bentazone is a broad-leaved weed-specific herbicide in the pesticide industry. This study focused on removing bentazone from water using three different methods: a two and three-dimensional electro-oxidation process (2D/EOP and 3D/EOP) with a fluid-type reactor arrangement using tetraethylenepentamine-loaded particle electrodes and an adsorption method. Additionally, we analysed the effects of two types of supporting electrolytes (Na2SO4 and NaCl) on the degradation process. The energy consumption amounts were calculated to evaluate the obtained results. The degradation reaction occurs 3.5 times faster in 3D/EOP than in 2D/EOP at 6 V in Na2SO4. Similarly, the degradation reaction of bentazone in NaCl occurs 2.5 times faster in 3D/EOP than in 2D/EOP at a value of 7.2 mA/cm2. Removal of bentazone is significantly better in 3D/EOPs than in 2D/EOPs. The use of particle electrodes can significantly enhance the degradation efficiency. The study further assessed the prediction abilities of the machine learning model (ANN). The ANN presented reasonable accuracy in bentazone degradation with high R2 values of 0.97953, 0.98561, 0.98563, and 0.99649 for 2D with Na2SO4, 2D with NaCl, 3D with Na2SO4, and 3D with NaCl, respectively.

JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2024; 469:133957. Abstract
Electro-peroxone (EP) is a novel technique for the removal of refractory organic contaminants (ROCs), while the role of anode in this system is neglected. In this work, the EP system with graphite felt anode (EP-GF) and activated carbon fiber anode (EP-ACF) was developed to enhance ibuprofen (IBP) removal. The results showed that 91.2% and 98.6% of IBP was removed within 20 min in EP-GF and EP-ACF, respectively. Hydroxy radical (O⋅H) was identified as the dominant reactive species, contributing 80.9% and 54.0% of IBP removal in EP-ACF and EP-GF systems, respectively. The roles of adsorption in EP-ACF and direct electron transfer in EP-GF cannot be ignored. Due to the differences in mechanism, EP-GF and EP-ACF systems were suitable for the removal of O⋅H-resistant ROCs (e.g., oxalic acid and pyruvic acid) and non-O⋅H-resistant ROCs (e.g., IBP and nitrobenzene), respectively. Both systems had excellent stability relying on the introduction of oxygen functional groups on the anode, and their electrolysis energy consumption was significantly lower than that of EP-Pt system. The three degradation pathways of IBP were proposed, and the toxicity of intermediates were evaluated. In general, carbon anodes have a good application prospect in the removal of ROCs in EP systems.

Abstract
Among inherently chiral selectors of axial stereogenicity, usually resulting in very good enantiodiscrimination performances, the biindole-based family has the additional advantage of very easy functionalization of the two nitrogen atoms with a variety of substituents with desirable properties. Aiming to evaluate the possibility of exploiting such feature to enhance the enantiodiscrimination ability of the archetype structure, a series of three inherently chiral monomers were designed and synthesized, characterised by a 2,2'-biindole atropisomeric core conjugated to bithiophene wings enabling fast and regular electrooligomerization, and functionalised at the nitrogen atoms with an ethyl, a methoxyethyl, or a hydroxyethyl substituent. Nitrogen alkylation was also exploited to obtain for the first time the chemical resolution of the biindole selectors without employing chiral HPLC. The enantiodiscrimination ability of the selector series was comparatively evaluated in proof-of-concept chiral voltammetry experiments with a "benchmark" chiral ferrocenyl probe as well as with chiral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and ketoprofen. The large enantiomer potential differences for all probes increased in the ethyl < methoxyethyl ≪ hydroxyethyl sequence of selector substituents, supporting our assumption on the beneficial role of an additional coordination element. The powerful hydroxyethyl selector was also applied to ketoprofen in a commercial drug matrix.

Abstract
Polyethyleneimine-modified magnetic sugarcane bagasse cellulose film (P-SBC/Fe3O4 film) was simply fabricated for the removal of ibuprofen (IBP), a typical emerging organic contaminant. The P-SBC/Fe3O4 film exhibited an equilibrium adsorption amount of 370.52 mg/g for IBP and a corresponding removal efficiency of 92.63 % under following adsorption conditions: 318 K, pH 4, and 0.25 mg/mL dosage. Thermodynamic studies indicated that adsorption of IBP on the P-SBC/Fe3O4 film was spontaneous (∆G < 0) and endothermic (∆H > 0). The adsorption data conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model and multilayer adsorption model (two layers), and an average of 3-4 active sites on the P-SBC/Fe3O4 film share an IBP molecule. Both the EDR-IDR and AOAS models vividly described the dynamic characteristics of adsorption process. Model fitting results, theoretical calculations, and comprehensive characterization revealed that adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions between the primary amine of P-SBC/Fe3O4 film and the carboxyl group of IBP molecule, while other weak interactions are also non-ignorable. Furthermore, quantitative calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) underscored the importance of PEI functionalization. In conclusion, P-SBC/Fe3O4 film is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective adsorbent with significant potential for effectively removing IBP, while maintaining its efficacy over multiple cycles.

Abstract
Nitrogen-containing disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) produced in the process of drinking water disinfection are widely concerning due to the high cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. It is due to the difficulty of natural degradation of N-DBPs in water and the fact that conventional treatment systems do not effectively treat N-DBPs in drinking water. In this study, N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) in water was electrocatalytically degraded by a three-dimensional electrode reactor (3DER). This system applied graphite plates as anode and cathode. The granular activated carbon (GAC) was used as third electrode. The degradation of NPYR using a continuous flow three-dimensional electrode reactor was investigated by examining the effects of flow rate, current density, electrolyte concentration, and pollutant concentration on the degradation efficiency, energy consumption, and reaction kinetics of GAC particle electrodes. The results showed that the optimal operating conditions were flow rate = 0.45 mL/min, current density = 6 mA/cm2, Na2SO4 concentration = 0.28 mol/L, and NPYR concentration = 20 mg/L. Under optimal conditions, the degradation of NPYR exceeded 58.84%. The main contributor of indirect oxidation was deduced from free radical quenching experiments. NPYR concentration was measured by GC-MS with DB-5 capillary column, operating in full scan monitoring mode for appropriate quantification of NPYR and intermediates. Based on the identification of reaction intermediates, a possible pathway for the electrochemical oxidation of NPYR on GAC particle electrodes was proposed.

Abstract
This study proposes a sustainable approach for hard-to-treat wastewater using sintered activated carbon (SAC) both as an adsorption filter and as an electrode, allowing its simultaneous electrochemical regeneration. SAC improves the activated carbon (AC) particle contact and thus the conductivity, while maintaining optimal liquid flow. The process removed 87 % of total organic carbon (TOC) from real high-load (initial TOC of 1625 mg/L) pharmaceutical wastewater (PWW), generated during the manufacturing of azithromycin, in 5 h, without external input of chemicals other than catalytic amounts of Fe(II). Kinetic modelling indicated that adsorption was the dominant process, while concomitant electrochemical degradation of complex organics first converted them to short-chain acids, followed by their full mineralization. In-situ electrochemical regeneration of SAC, taking place at the same time as the treatment, is a key feature of our process, enhancing its performance and ensuring its stable operation over time, while eliminating cleaning downtimes altogether. The energy consumption of this innovative process was remarkably low at 8.0×10-3 kWh gTOC-1. This study highlights the potential of SAC for treating hard-to-treat effluents by concurrent adsorption and mineralization of organics.

Abstract
Wastewater treatment and reuse have risen as a solution to the water crisis plaguing the world. Global warming-induced climate change, population explosion and fast depletion of groundwater resources are going to exacerbate the present global water problems for the forthcoming future. In this scenario, advanced electrochemical oxidation process (EAOP) utilising electrocatalytic (EC) and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technologies have caught hold of the interest of the scientific community. The interest stems from the global water management plans to scale down centralised water and wastewater treatment systems to decentralised and semicentralised treatment systems for better usage efficiency and less resource wastage. In an age of rising water pollution caused by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), EC and PEC systems were found to be capable of optimal mineralisation of these pollutants rendering them environmentally benign. The present review treads into the conventional electrochemical treatment systems to identify their drawbacks and analyses the scope of the EC and PEC to mitigate them. Probable electrode materials, potential catalysts and optimal operational conditions for such applications were also examined. The review also discusses the possible retrospective application of EC and PEC as point-of-use and point-of-entry treatment systems during the transition from conventional centralised systems to decentralised and semi-centralised water and wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract
With the increase of organic emissions in production and human life, the pollution control of organic is now an urgent problem in the environmental field. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization rice husk-loaded Al-modified biochar (Al-BC) was synthesized, and the results of scanning electron microscopy could be used to determine that Al oxide composite was loaded on the surface of the material. The specific surface area was 57.049 m2 g-1, pore volume was 0.254 cm3 g-1, and average pore diameter was 8.922 nm for BC and 109.617 m2 g-1, 0.215 cm3 g-1, and 3.969 nm for Al-BC, respectively. The control effects of these two adsorption materials on organic pollutant ibuprofen (IBU) under different pH conditions were also investigated. The research results show that the adsorption capacity of Al-BC (30.24-1.48 mg g-1) is better than BC (19.98-0.92 mg g-1) at pH from 2 to 11. Solution pH plays a crucial role in IBU adsorption from organic solution. The Langmuir fitting results show that at pH = 7, the saturated adsorption capacity of IBU on BC could reach up to 18.68 mg g-1; the adsorption capacity on Al-BC was 60.49 mg g-1. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic, and increased disorder. The adsorption material prepared in this study could provide a reference for organic pollution control in water.

Abstract
A novel SnO2-Sb/AP (attapulgite) particle electrode was prepared for three-dimensional electrocatalytic oxidation (3D/EO) of organic pollutants using a co-sintering method. The electrochemical properties and micromorphology were determined using polarization, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and compared with activated carbon (AC), AP, and TiO2/AP particle electrodes. Besides, their potential application in the electrochemical degradation of phenol was investigated. The SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrode exhibited higher electrochemical activity than other particle electrodes due to its large number of active sites, low transfer coefficient (α, 0.12), and high-volt ampere charge (q*, 1.18 C·cm-2). The electrochemical CODCr degradation efficiency (100%) of phenol on SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrodes is much higher than for other particle electrodes. Moreover, an excellent stability of the SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrode is also verified by repeated experiments. These results indicate that the SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrodes broaden the application area of clays and are expected to be a promising method for 3D/EO.

Abstract
This study produced a biomass-based cylindrical electrode containing sucrose (an organic binder). The Cu2+ removal performance of the synthesized sucrose-bonded cylindrical electrode was evaluated in a 3-phase 3-dimensional electro-oxidation reactor (3D-EO) and the classical electro-oxidation method (2D-EO). Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDs) was grafted onto activated carbon and used as microelectrode in 3D-EO reactors. SDs grafting resulted in a 57% reduction in the micropores of activated carbon. Therefore, the surface area of carbon after grafting decreased from 1328 m2/g to 580 m2/g. The sucrose-bonded cylindrical electrode has a rich carbon structure and consists of 84.04 wt% C, 12.10 wt% O and 3.20 wt%Si. According to CV measurement, the sucrose-bonded cylindrical electrode gives a surface reaction against Cu2+ at voltages lower than -0.62 V. Increasing the potential difference from 1V to 3V in 2D-EO and 3D-EO processes led to the removal of Cu2+ from the solution. The 3D-EO reactor achieved a removal rate of 87.12% at 3V. The 100 ppm solution was treated with a 3D-EO reactor containing 6 g/L of PC/SDs400Ws for 60 min, successfully removing 91.22% of Cu2+.

Abstract
Industrial reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) was electrochemically oxidized using a continuous-flow system (CFS) with a front buffer tank. Multivariate optimization including Plackett-Burman (PBD) and central composite design based on response surface method (CCD-RSM) was implemented to investigate the effects of characteristic (e.g., recirculation ratio (R value), ratio of buffer tank and electrolytic zone (RV value)) and routine (e.g., current density (i), inflow linear velocity (v) and electrode spacing (d)) parameters. R, v values and current density significantly influenced chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N removal and effluent active chlorine species (ACS) level, while electrode spacing and RV value had negligible effects. High chloride content of industrial ROC facilitated the generation of ACS and subsequent mass transfer, low hydraulic retention time (HRT) of electrolytic cell improved the mass transfer efficiency, and high HRT of buffer tank prolonged the reaction between the pollutants and oxidants. The significance levels of COD removal, energy efficiency, effluent ACS level and toxic byproduct level CCD-RSM models were validated by statistical test results, including higher F value than critical effect value, lower P value than 0.05, low deviation between predicted and observed values, and normal distribution of calculated residuals. The highest pollutant removal was achieved at a high R value, a high current density and a low v value; the highest energy efficiency was achieved at a high R, a low current density and a high v value; the lowest effluent ACS and toxic byproduct levels were achieved at a low R value, a low current density and a high v value. Following the multivariate optimization, the optimum parameters were decided to be v = 1.2 cm h-1, i ≥ 8 mA cm-2, d ≥ 4, RV = 10-20 and R = 1 to achieve better effluent quality (i.e., lower effluent pollutant, ACS and toxic byproduct levels).

Abstract
A double chamber electrochemical system is developed consisting of a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a graphite cathode, which not only degrades sulfamethoxazole (SMX) but also simultaneously generates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The degradation of SMX is carried out by (in)direct oxidation at the BDD anode and H2O2 is produced by two electron oxygen (O2) reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. The effect of different parameters on the kinetics of both mechanisms was investigated. The performance of the system at the optimized conditions (pH 3, 0.05 M Na2SO4 as electrolyte, and 10 mA as applied current) showed that after 180 min of electrolysis, SMX was almost fully degraded (95% removal and ∼90% COD reduction) as well as about 535 μM H2O2 was accumulated. With the help of LC-MS, five intermediates formed during SMX electrolysis were properly identified and a degradation pathway was proposed. This study advocates methods for improving the effectiveness of energy use in advanced wastewater treatment.

Abstract
This study investigated Ni+2 removal performance in 3DER reactors where electrocoagulation mechanisms and microelectrodes are used together. EDTA modification was carried out on the granule-activated carbon surface to increase the efficiency and affinity of microelectrodes against Ni+2 molecules. The grafting was examined using BET, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, and the elemental mapping methods. With the surface analyses made in this study, it was revealed that EDTA modification on granulated activated carbon was successfully performed. Also, 8.48%wt by mass of EDTA grafting on granular activated carbon was possible. EDTA functionalization did not affect the surface pore structures of CAC much. Under 10 V potential, 97.82% Ni removal efficiency was obtained with 2D in 35 min, while 96.69% removal in 10 min and 100% removal in 15 min were obtained in the 3D reactor. The Ni+2 removal mechanism in 3DER reactors has been determined to conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The k2 value obtained for 10 V (1.36 10-2) is 27 times the k2 value obtained for 5 V for 3DER reactors. In addition, using central composite design (CCD), operational parameters such as time, concentration, and potential difference affecting Ni+2 removal in 3DER reactors have been optimized. The most influential parameter is the applied voltage, followed by time and concentration. It has been determined that 3DER reactors using EDTA-modified microelectrodes are highly efficient and suitable for Ni+2 removal.

Abstract
The feasibility of decomplexation removal of typical contaminants in electroplating wastewater, complexed Cu(II) with 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (Cu-HEDP), was first performed by a three-dimensional electrode reactor with activated biochar as particle electrodes. For the case of 50 mg/L Cu-HEDP, Cu(II) removal (90.7%) and PO43- conversion (34.9%) were achieved under the conditions of electric current 40 mA, initial pH 7, acid-treated almond shell biochar (AASB) addition 20 g/L, and reaction time 180 min, with second-order rate constants of 1.10 × 10-3 and 1.94 × 10-5 min-1 respectively. The growing chelating effect between Cu(II) and HEDP and the comprehensive actions of adsorptive accumulation, direct and indirect oxidation given by particle electrodes accounted for the enhanced removal of Cu-HEDP, even though the mineralization of HEDP was mainly dependent on anode oxidation. The performance attenuation of AASB particle electrodes was ascribed to the excessive consumption of oxygen-containing functionalities during the reaction, especially acidic carboxylic groups and quinones on particle electrodes, which decreased from 446.74 to 291.48 µmol/g, and 377.55 to 247.71 µmol/g, respectively. Based on the determination of adsorption behavior and indirect electrochemical oxidation mediated by in situ electrogenerated H2O2 and reactive oxygen species (e.g., •OH), a possible removal mechanism of Cu-HEDP by three-dimensional electrolysis was further proposed.

Abstract
This study constructed a three-dimensional electrochemical reactor (3DER) using meshed stainless steel sheets and titanic magnetite particles (TMP) to investigate bisphenol A (BPA) degradation through the synergistic action of electrical current and TMP. We examined some TMP characteristics, such as particle size, specific surface areas, X-ray diffraction, surface imaging, elemental constituents, and electrical resistivity. It was found that TMP was a micron-level material with excellent electrical conductivity, and it could be regarded as a magnetite-based material comprising Fe(II) and Fe(III). The single-factor experiment determined the optimal conditions for BPA removal in 3DER, specifically by introducing 200 ml of BPA-simulated wastewater (10 mg L−1) into 3DER. At the initial pH of 9.00, current and electrodes gap of 300 mA and 15 mm, respectively, and adding 1 ml of 0.5 M potassium peroxymonosulfate and 1 g TMP, > 98% of BPA was removed after 55 min of electrochemical reaction. In addition, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry identified the intermediates formed during the BPA treatment, showing two possible pathways for BPA degradation. The final degradation intermediates were chain organics with simple molecular structures. This research provided an understanding of the potential application of 3DER for BPA removal in water.

Abstract
In the present work, a three-dimensional electrode reactor (3Der) using pallet activated carbon (PAC), as particle electrodes, was investigated to degrade non-biodegradable organic pollutants in pharmaceutical wastewater and steel industry wastewater. The effect of operating parameters, such as pH, electrode distance, O2 flow rate, and current density was investigated. The TOC removal efficiency in 3Der was achieved at the highest mineralization yield of 94.1% after 180 min electrolysis, which was 10-19% higher than the two-dimensional electrode reactor (2Der). The higher performance of the 3Der can be attributed to the indirect and direct oxidation mechanisms. The impact of supporting electrolytes was decreased in order as chloride > nitrate > sulfate. The morphology of sludge and the presence of Fe(OH)3 after Fenton-oxidation were investigated. 3Der system improved biodegradability of pharmaceutical wastewater after electro-Fenton treatment at a PW/SIW ratio of 3:1 (BOD5/COD = 0.6). Hence, the mechanism of 3Der/PAC, as particle electrodes was also proposed. 3Der with PAC particle electrodes using steel industry wastewater as a catalyst is an exciting technique for remediation of organic contaminated pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract
Complete desorption of contaminants from electrode materials is required for the efficient utilization and long service life of capacitive deionization (CDI) but remains a major challenge. The electrodesorption capacity of CDI in the conventional electrode configuration is limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window of water, which lowers the operating potential to approximately 1.2 V. Here, we report a graphite anode–titanium cathode electrode configuration that extends the cathode potential to −1.7 V and provides an excellent (100%) electrodesorption performance, which is maintained after five cycles. The improvement of the cathode potential depends on the redox property of the electrode. The stronger the oxidizability of the anode and reducibility of the cathode, the wider the cathode potential. The complete desorption potential of SO42− predicted by theoretical electrochemistry was the foundation for optimizing the electrode configuration. The desorption efficiency of Cl− depended on the ionic strength and was negligibly affected by circulating velocities above 112 mL min−1. This work can direct the design optimizations of CDI devices, especially for reactors undergoing chemisorption during the electrosorption process.

Abstract
In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCNSs) were prepared and successfully combined into the PbO2 electrode by the composite electrodeposition technology, thereby NCNS-PbO2 electrode was obtained. The electrochemical degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aqueous solution by NCNS-PbO2 electrode was studied. The main influence factors on the degradation of SMX, such as the initial concentration of SMX, current density, electrolyte concentration and initial pH value, were analyzed in detail. Under the optimal process conditions, after 120 min of treatment, the removal ratio of SMX and chemical oxygen demand (COD) reached 99.8 % and 60.7 %, respectively. The results showed that the electrochemical degradation of SMX fitted pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The electrochemical performance of NCNS-PbO2 electrode was better than that of PbO2 electrode by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as the use of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for electrochemical performance testing. This was because the doping of nitrogen atoms improved the properties of carbon nanosheets. After the composite, the active sites on the surface of PbO2 were improved, the particle size of PbO2 was reduced, and the electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of the electrode were improved. In addition, the intermediate products were determined by GC-MS method, and the possible degradation pathways of SMX were proposed.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce a clean energy, hydrogen, and to remove pollutants simultaneously in water by photoelectrochemical (PEC) method. The photo-anode of cuprous oxide modified titanate nanotube arrays (Cu2O/TNTAs) was synthesized by using lactic acid, green tea, and coffee as reductants individually. The characterizations of Cu2O/TNTAs were performed by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to investigate the physical and chemical properties such as structure, crystallization, element contents, and optical performance. The electrochemical analyses of Cu2O/TNTAs showed the photo-current of Cu2O/TNTAs-t (using green tea as reductant) was 2.4 times higher than pure TNTAs, illustrating the effective separation of electron-hole pairs after Cu2O modification. The photoelectrochemical performances of Cu2O/TNTAs-t and Cu2O/TNTAs-c (using coffee as the reductant) were better than Cu2O/TNTAs-L (using lactic acid as the reductant) in terms of photo-current density, Ibuprofen degradation, and hydrogen generation, implying that depositing Cu2O on TNTAs can significantly improve the electron mobility by reducing the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, which is beneficial to simultaneously ibuprofen degradation and hydrogen production.

Abstract
In this work, sulfur and zinc were used to modify the steel slag/kaolin particle electrodes. Sulfur-zinc modified kaolin/steel slag particle electrodes (S-Zn-KSPEs) was successfully prepared. In a wide pH range (pH 3-10), S-Zn-KSPEs could efficiently degrade norfloxacin at low voltage (4 V) within 90 min. The removal rate of NOR by S-Zn-KSPEs was about 100% in acidic environment, more than 90% in neutral environment, and more than 80% in alkaline environment. And S-Zn-KSPEs could also efficiently degrade methylene blue, diuron, levofloxacin and other refractory pollutants under neutral conditions. S-Zn-KSPEs showed good stability and recyclability, and could maintain high catalytic activity after 8 cycles in a neutral or alkaline environment. The possible degradation mechanism and the degradation pathway of norfloxacin are proposed. In addition, S-Zn-KSPEs also showed a higher treatment effect in the treatment of actual surface water bodies. And S-Zn-KSPEs had a strong acid-base buffering capacity, which could avoid some pretreatment measures of wastewater in practical applications.

Electrocatalytic degradation of diuron herbicide using three-dimensional carbon felt/β-PbO 2 anode as a highly porous electrode: Influencing factors and degradation mechanisms. Abstract
Traditional planar PbO2 anodes have been used extensively for the electrocatalytic degradation process. However, by using porous PbO2 anodes that have a three-dimensional architecture, the efficiency of the process can be significantly upgraded. In the current study, carbon felt (CF) with a highly porous structure and a conventional planar graphite sheet (G) were used as electrode substrate for PbO2 anodes. Both CF/β-PbO2 and G/β-PbO2 anodes were prepared by the anodic deposition method. The main properties of the electrodes were characterized by XRD, EDX-mapping, FESEM, and BET-BJH techniques. The electrocatalytic degradation of diuron using three-dimensional porous CF/β-PbO2 anode was modeled and optimized by a rotatable central composite design. After optimizing the process, the ability of porous CF/β-PbO2 and planar G/β-PbO2 anodes to degrade and mineralize diuron was compared. The electrocatalytic degradation of the diuron was well described by a quadratic model (R2 > 0.99). Under optimal conditions, the kinetics of diuron removal using CF/β-PbO2 anode was 3 times faster than the G/β-PbO2 anode. The energy consumed for the complete mineralization of diuron using CF/β-PbO2 anode was 2077 kWh kg-1 TOC. However, the G/β-PbO2 anode removed only 65% of the TOC by consuming 54% more energy. The CF/β-PbO2 had more stability (115 vs. 91 h), larger surface area (1.6287 vs. 0.8565 m2 g-1), and higher oxygen evolution potential (1.89 vs. 1.84 V) compared to the G/β-PbO2. In the proposed pathways for diuron degradation, the aromatic ring and groups of carbonyl, dimethyl urea, and amide were the main targets for HO• radical attacks.

Abstract
Ibuprofen (IBP) is an emerging environmental contaminant having low aqueous solubility which negatively affects the application of advanced oxidation and adsorption processes. It was determined that as the temperature increased to 473 K, the mole fraction solubility increased considerably from 0.02 × 10-3 to 212.88 × 10-3 (10600-fold). Calculation of the thermodynamic properties indicated an endothermic process, ΔsolH > 0, with relatively high ΔsolS values. Spectroscopic, thermal and chromatographic analyses established the IBP stability at subcritical conditions. In the second part of the study, the degradation of IBP in H2O2-modified subcritical was studied and the effect of each process variable was investigated. The optimum degradation of 88% was reached at an IBP concentration of 15 mg L-1, temperature of 250 °C, 105 min treatment time and 250 mM H2O2. The process was optimized by response surface methodology and a mathematical model was proposed and validated. Temperature was determined as the most influential parameter, followed by H2O2 concentration. At temperatures higher than 230 °C, a small but noticeable reduction in degradation % suggested that the OH· radicals are consumed at a higher rate than they are produced, through side reactions with other radicals and/or IBP by-products. Finally, potential by-products were determined by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis and potential by-products were proposed.
