Influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on enantioselective bioaccumulation and oxidative stress toxicity of indoxacarb in zebrafish(Danio rerio)

A review on the enantioselective distribution and toxicity of chiral pesticides in aquatic environment

Chiral pesticides account for about 40% of the total pesticides. In the process of using pesticides, it will inevitably flow into the surface water and even penetrate into the groundwater through surface runoff and other means, as a consequence, it affects the water environment. Although the enantiomers of chiral pesticides have the same physical and chemical properties, their distribution, ratio, metabolism, toxicity, etc. in the organism are often different, and sometimes even show completely opposite biological activities. In this article, the selective fate of different types of chiral pesticides such as organochlorine, organophosphorus, triazole, pyrethroid and other chiral pesticides in natural water bodies and sediments, acute toxicity to aquatic organisms, chronic toxicity and other aspects are summarized to further reflect the risks between the enantiomers of chiral pesticides to non-target organisms in the water environment. In this review, we hope to further explore its harm to human society through the study of the toxicity of chiral pesticide enantiomers, so as to provide data support and theoretical basis for the development and production of biochemical pesticides.

A Comparison of In Vitro Metabolic Clearance of Various Regulatory Fish Species Using Hepatic S9 Fractions

Bioaccumulation predictions can be substantially improved by combining in vitro metabolic rate measurements derived from rainbow trout hepatocytes and/or hepatic S9 fractions with quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling approaches. Compared with in vivo testing guidelines Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 305 and Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP; an office of the US Environmental Protection Agency) 850.1730, the recently adopted OECD test guidelines 319A and 319B are in vitro approaches that have the potential to provide a time- and cost-efficient, humane solution, reducing animal use while addressing uncertainties in bioaccumulation across species. The present study compares the hepatic clearance of the S9 subcellular fraction of rainbow trout, bluegill, common carp, fathead minnow, and largemouth bass, discerning potential differences in metabolism between different warm- and cold-water species. With refinements to the in vitro metabolic S9 assay for high-throughput analysis, we measured in vitro clearance rates of seven chemicals crossing multiple classes of chemistry and modes of action. We confirmed that data from rainbow trout liver S9 fraction metabolic rates can be utilized to predict rainbow trout bioconcentration factors using an in vitro to in vivo extrapolation model, as intended in the OECD 319B applicability domain per the bioaccumulation prediction. Also, we determined that OECD 319B can be applied to other species, modified according to their habitat, adaptations to feeding behavior, and environmental conditions (e.g., temperature). Once toxicokinetics for each species is better understood and appropriate models are developed, this method can be an excellent tool to determine hepatic clearance and potential bioaccumulation across species. The present study could be leveraged prior to or in place of initiating in vivo bioconcentration studies, thus optimizing selection of appropriate fish species. Does commercial indoxacarb pose ecotoxicological consequences? Employing a multi-marker approach in the model species Theba pisana

Indoxacarb is one of the most extensively used oxadiazine insecticides worldwide, but it may exert detrimental effects on ecosystems, population dynamics, and health. Due to the lack of knowledge on the ecotoxicity of indoxacarb, it is still challenging to assess whether this insecticide poses an ecotoxicological impact on terrestrial environments. Therefore, our study aims to provide novel data on the toxic effects of 28-day dietary exposure to commercial grade indoxacarb at two environmentally relevant concentrations, 0.02 µg/mL and tenfold (0.2 µg/mL) on the model species, Theba pisana. Their effects were studied using a multiple biomarker approach by evaluating physiological, biochemical, and histopathological responses. After 28 days of treatment, indoxacarb at both concentrations significantly reduced the food intake and growth of the treated snails. Also, it caused decreases in lipid peroxidation (LPO)  levels after 7 and 14 days of exposure, whereas an opposite effect occurred after 21 and 28 days. All treated snails were found to exhibit a lower content of glutathione (GSH) after all times of exposure. Moreover, catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, as well as protein content (PC), were elevated in the treated snails after all time intervals. Post exposure to both realistic indoxacarb concentrations, changes in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity between a decrease and an increase were observed. Furthermore, indoxacarb caused histo-architectural changes in the hepatopancreas of T. pisana. Our results demonstrate that, at environmentally relevant concentrations, indoxacarb poses negative consequences for T. pisana, indicating its ecotoxicological impacts.

Unveiling combined ecotoxicity: Interactions and impacts of engineered nanoparticles and PPCPs

Emerging contaminants such as engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are of great concern because of their wide distribution and incomplete removal in conventional wastewater and soil treatment processes. The production and usage of ENPs and PPCPs inevitably result in their coexistence in different environmental media, thus posing various risks to organisms in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, the existing literature on the physicochemical interactions between ENPs and PPCPs and their effects on organisms is rather limited. Therefore, this paper summarized the ecotoxicity of combined ENPs and PPCPs by discussing: (1) the interactions between ENPs and PPCPs, including processes such as aggregation, adsorption, transformation, and desorption, considering the influence of environmental factors like pH, ionic strength, dissolved organic matter, and temperature; (2) the effects of these interactions on bioaccumulation, bioavailability and biotoxicity in organisms at different trophic levels; (3) the impacted of ENPs and PPCPs on cellular-level biological process. This review elucidated the potential ecological hazards associated with the interaction of ENPs and PPCPs, and serves as a foundation for future investigations into the ecotoxicity and mode of action of ENPs, PPCPs, and their co-occurring metabolites.

Chiral nanomaterials in tissue engineering

Addressing significant medical challenges arising from tissue damage and organ failure, the field of tissue engineering has evolved to provide revolutionary approaches for regenerating functional tissues and organs. This involves employing various techniques, including the development and application of novel nanomaterials. Among them, chiral nanomaterials comprising non-superimposable nanostructures with their mirror images have recently emerged as innovative biomaterial candidates to guide tissue regeneration due to their unique characteristics. Chiral nanomaterials including chiral fibre supramolecular hydrogels, polymer-based chiral materials, self-assembling peptides, chiral-patterned surfaces, and the recently developed intrinsically chiroptical nanoparticles have demonstrated remarkable ability to regulate biological processes through routes such as enantioselective catalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. Despite several recent reviews on chiral nanomaterials, limited attention has been given to the specific potential of these materials in facilitating tissue regeneration processes. Thus, this timely review aims to fill this gap by exploring the fundamental characteristics of chiral nanomaterials, including their chiroptical activities and analytical techniques. Also, the recent advancements in incorporating these materials in tissue engineering applications are highlighted. The review concludes by critically discussing the outlook of utilizing chiral nanomaterials in guiding future strategies for tissue engineering design.

Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers seen as emerging threat to fish: Historical review and trends

Since the discovery of the third allotropic carbon form, carbon-based one-dimensional nanomaterials (1D-CNMs) became an attractive and new technology with different applications that range from electronics to biomedical and environmental technologies. Despite their broad application, data on environmental risks remain limited. Fish are widely used in ecotoxicological studies and biomonitoring programs. Thus, the aim of the current study was to summarize and critically analyze the literature focused on investigating the bioaccumulation and ecotoxicological impacts of 1D-CNMs (carbon nanotubes and nanofibers) on different fish species. In total, 93 articles were summarized and analyzed by taking into consideration the following aspects: bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, organ-specific toxicity, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and behavioral changes. Results have evidenced that the analyzed studies were mainly carried out with multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which were followed by single-walled nanotubes and nanofibers. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) was the main fish species used as model system. CNMs' ecotoxicity in fish depends on their physicochemical features, functionalization, experimental design (e.g. exposure time, concentration, exposure type), as well as on fish species and developmental stage. CNMs' action mechanism and toxicity in fish are associated with oxidative stress, genotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. Overall, fish are a suitable model system to assess the ecotoxicity of, and the environmental risk posed by, CNMs.

Zebrafish Insights into Nanomaterial Toxicity: A Focused Exploration on Metallic, Metal Oxide, Semiconductor, and Mixed-Metal Nanoparticles

Nanomaterials are widely used in various fields, and ongoing research is focused on developing safe and sustainable nanomaterials. Using zebrafish as a model organism for studying the potentially toxic effects of nanomaterials highlights the importance of developing safe and sustainable nanomaterials. Studies conducted on nanomaterials and their toxicity and potential risks to human and environmental health are vital in biomedical sciences. In the present review, we discuss the potential toxicity of nanomaterials (inorganic and organic) and exposure risks based on size, shape, and concentration. The review further explores various types of nanomaterials and their impacts on zebrafish at different levels, indicating that exposure to nanomaterials can lead to developmental defects, changes in gene expressions, and various toxicities. The review also covers the importance of considering natural organic matter and chorion membranes in standardized nanotoxicity testing. While some nanomaterials are biologically compatible, metal and semiconductor nanomaterials that enter the water environment can increase toxicity to aquatic creatures and can potentially accumulate in the human body. Further investigations are necessary to assess the safety of nanomaterials and their impacts on the environment and human health.

Single and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics and acetochlor on accumulation and intestinal toxicity of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

The co-exposure of microplastics (MPs) and other contaminants has aroused extensive attention, but the combined impacts of MPs and pesticides remain poorly understood. Acetochlor (ACT), a widely used chloroacetamide herbicide, has raised concerns for its potential bio-adverse effects. This study evaluated the influences of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) for acute toxicity, bioaccumulation, and intestinal toxicity in zebrafish to ACT. We found that PE-MPs significantly enhanced ACT acute toxicity. Also, PE-MPs increased the accumulation of ACT in zebrafish and aggravate the oxidative stress damage of ACT in intestines. Exposure to PE-MPs or/and ACT causes mild damage to the gut tissue of zebrafish and altered gut microbial composition. In terms of gene transcription, ACT exposure triggered a significant increase in inflammatory response-related gene expressions in the intestines, while some pro-inflammatory factors were found to be inhibited by PE-MPs. This study provides a new perspective on the fate of MPs in the environment and on the assessment of the combined effects of MPs and pesticides on organisms.

Effect of Cd/Cu on the toxicity and stereoselective environmental behavior of dinotefuran in earthworms Eisenia foetida

Pesticides and heavy metals commonly coexist in soil. In this study, the influence of Cd and Cu on the toxicity of rac-dinotefuran and the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran enantiomers in soil-earthworm microcosms were investigated. The acute toxic tests showed that S-dinotefuran has higher toxic than that of R-dinotefuran. The rac-dinotefuran and Cd has an antagonistic effect on earthworms, and the Cu and rac-dinotefuran has a synergistic effect. Earthworms maybe promoted the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran in soil. Co-exposure to Cd or Cu inhibited the dissipation of dinotefuran enantiomers (S-dinotefuran and R-enantiomers), and slightly reduced the enantioselectivity in soil. The earthworms were found to be preferentially enriched with S-dinotefuran. However, Cd or Cu attenuated the accumulation of dinotefuran enantiomers in earthworms and decreased the enantioselectivity. The effect of Cd and Cu on the environmental behaviors of dinotefuran enantiomers were correlated positively with the dose of Cd/Cu. These results showed that Cd and Cu alter the environmental behaviors and the toxicity of dinotefuran enantiomers in soil-earthworm microcosms. Thus, the influence of coexistent heavy metals on the ecological risk assessment of chiral pesticides should be considered.

Ecotoxicological evaluation of functional carbon nanodots using zebrafish (Danio rerio) model at different developmental stages

Considering functional carbon nanodots (FCNs) are potential to be applied in many areas, their risk and toxicity to organisms are imperative to be evaluated. Thus, this study conducted acute toxicity test of zebrafish (Danio rerio) at embryonic and adult stage to estimate the toxicity of FCNs. Results show that the toxic effects of FCNs and nitrogen doped FCNs (N-FCNs) at their 10% lethal concentration (LC₁₀) values on zebrafish are expressed in developmental retardation, cardiovascular toxicity, renal damage and hepatotoxicity. There are interactive relationships between these effects, but the main reason should be ascribed to the undesirable oxidative damage induced by high doses of materials, as well as the biodistribution of FCNs and N-FCNs in vivo. Even so, FCNs and N-FCNs can promote the antioxidant activity in zebrafish tissues to cope with the oxidative stress. FCNs and N-FCNs are not easy to cross the physical barriers in zebrafish embryos or larvae, and can be excreted from intestine by adult fish, which proves their biosecurity to zebrafish. In addition, because of the differences in physicochemical properties, especially nano-size and surface chemical property, FCNs show higher biosecurity to zebrafish than N-FCNs. The effects of FCNs and N-FCNs on hatching rates, mortality rates and developmental malformations are dose-dependent and time-dependent. The LC₅₀ values of FCNs and N-FCNs on zebrafish embryo at 96 hpf are 1610 mg/L and 649 mg/L, respectively. According to the Acute Toxicity Rating Scale of the Fish and Wildlife Service, the toxicity grades of FCNs and N-FCNs are both defined as "practically nontoxic", and FCNs are "Relatively Harmless" to embryos because their LC₅₀ values are above 1000 mg/L. Our results prove the biosecurity of FCNs-based materials for future practical application.

Degradation, adsorption, and bioaccumulation of novel triketone HPPD herbicide tembotrione

Tembotrione is a new triketone HPPD herbicide widely used in Europe, USA, and other areas. However, tembotrione is moderately to highly toxic to algae and daphnia in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, hydrolysis, photolysis, soil degradation, soil adsorption, and bioaccumulation of tembotrione were systematically studied. Hydrolysis experiment revealed that tembotrione was stable in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions with half-lives of 231-289 days. The photolysis half-lives of tembotrione were 112-158 days and 76-107 days in pH 4, 7, 9 buffer solutions and on three soils surface, respectively, which demonstrated that tembotrione could be persisted in soil and water. Meanwhile, tembotrione K_foc was 128-196 mL/g, indicating that tembotrione was not easily adsorbed to soil, and the adsorption capacity increased with the decrease in pH. The half-lives of tembotrione in the test soil were 32-48 days, and high organic matter soil is conducive to microbial activity and accelerates the degradation of tembotrione. Moreover, bioaccumulation experiment demonstrated that tembotrione with a BCF of 0.664 to 0.724 had a low risk of exposure to zebrafish. This study is very helpful for the evaluation environmental risk and safe use of tembotrione.

Study on the enantioselective bioaccumulation and dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm-soil microcosm through supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS)

In this work, the enantioselective bioaccumulation and dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm-soil microcosm were studied. A fast enantioseparation method of uniconazole through supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS) was established. The CHIRALCEL OZ-3 column and a mixture of CO₂ and methanol (80:20, v/v) were used within 1.0 min to separate uniconazole enantiomers. The recoveries of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm and soil samples ranged from 83.3 to 113%, and the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values were lower than 11%. In earthworms, the bioaccumulation concentrations of uniconazole enantiomers increased with time and reached the maximum on the 7th day and then decreased. The elimination of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworms followed the first-order kinetics equation, and the elimination half-lives were approximately 7 days. In artificial soil, the dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers was slow, and the dissipation half-lives were both 25.7 days. No enantioselectivity occurred in the earthworm-soil microcosm. These results may reduce the uncertainty of environmental risk assessment for uniconazole.

Enantioselective toxic effects of the novel chiral antifungal agrochemical penthiopyrad in the early life stage of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Penthiopyrad was extensively applied in agricultural production, however, the toxicities information of the penthiopyrad enantiomers on early life stages of aquatic organism were limited. This study investigated the enantioselective toxicity of penthiopyrad on the early life stage of zebrafish by acute toxicity, sublethal toxic effects and the mRNA relative expression levels of genes related to succinate dehydrogenase, cardiac development, and lipid metabolism. The results showed that the 96-h-LC₅₀ of penthiopyrad racemate and enantiomers to zebrafish embryos were Rac-: 2.784 mg/L; R-(-)-: 3.528 mg/L; S-(+)-: 1.882 mg/L. Penthiopyrad exposure induced autonomous movement abnormalities, slowed heart rate and delayed hatching in zebrafish embryos, and caused developmental toxic effects such as pericardial edema and yolk sac edema. The mRNA relative expression levels results showed that penthiopyrad exposure induced significant enantioselectivity effect for the expression of the Sdha, Pr1 and Nkx2.5 with a 1.94-4.98-fold difference between different enantiomers, and significantly affected succinate dehydrogenase (energy metabolism), lipid metabolism and cardiac development-related genes expression. In general, S-(+)-penthiopyrad induced higher toxic effects in zebrafish embryos, and mitochondrial dysfunction may be an important cause of abnormal development. This study contributed to improve the comprehensive risk assessment and enantiomeric research system of penthiopyrad to early life stage of zebrafish.

The profiles of chiral pesticides in peri-urban areas near Yangtze River: Enantioselective distribution characteristics and correlations with surface sediments

Chiral pesticides account for 30% of pesticides. Pesticides are inevitably leached into the groundwater by runoff. At the watershed level, the distribution characteristics of enantiomers in sediments collected from the river network of an agricultural area near the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were tested, and their potential correlations with the physicochemical properties and microbial communities of the sediments were analyzed. The sediment pollution was serious at sites 8 and 9, with their pollution source possibly being agricultural or industrial sewage. Moreover, there were higher cumulative contents of pesticide residues at sites 4, 8, and 9. Specifically, Cycloxaprid was the most detected chiral pesticide in the study area, followed by Dinotefuran and Diclofop-methyl. Additionally, Ethiprole and Difenoconazole had strong enantioselectivity in the study area. Interestingly, the enantiomers of some chiral pesticides, such as Tebuconazole, had completely different distributions at different sites. Pearson correlation analysis showed that sediment catalase and microbial biomass carbon were important factors for enantioselectivity of chiral pesticides. The effect of sediment physicochemical properties on enantioselective distribution was achieved by influencing the microorganisms in the sediment. Furthermore, the enantioselective distribution of Tebuconazole was closely related to the genus Arenimonas. Overall, the enantioselective distribution of most of the chiral pesticides was positively correlated with the prokaryotic microbial community. This study provides empirical support for agricultural non-point source pollution caused by chiral pesticides, and also lays a research foundation for exploring the factors that affect the fate of chiral pesticides in the environment.

Carbon nanotubes accelerates the bio-induced vivianite formation

Vivianite widely existed in digested sludge and activated sludge as a potential phosphate resource recovered from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). As an important product of extracellular electron transfer (EET) and biological iron reduction, the production of vivianite can be enhanced by conductive materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with excellent electrical conductivity have been reported to promote electron transfer, which was applied in wastewater treatment to accelerate the degradation of the contaminants. However, the impact of CNTs on vivianite formation was barely reported. In this study, the iron reduction, vivianite recovery, and the biotoxicity of CNTs were investigated in order to determine the influence of CNTs towards the vivianite production. The enhancement of vivianite production after CNTs adding reached up to 17 % by promoting the electron transfer between dissimilative iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) and Fe(III). However, at the initial stage (0-24 h), Fe(III) reduction efficiency decreased by 81 % after inoculating with sewage sludge, which was attributed to CNTs destroying of the cell membrane (as indicated by SEM, CLSM and AFM analysis). The biotoxicity of CNTs stimulated DIRB to secret extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and form bio-flocs to resist the physical puncture. After 48 h, the proportion of living DIRB in 1000 mg/L CNTs batch increased to 98 %, which was 79 % higher than 12 h. As a result, the vivianite recovery of raw sewage with 1000 mg/L CNTs increased to 44 ± 1 %, which was 33 % higher than that in the CNT-0.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes impact on the enantioselective bioaccumulation and toxicity of the chiral insecticide bifenthrin to zebrafish (Danio rerio)

The effects of different multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the enantioselective bioaccumulation and toxicity of the chiral pesticide bifenthrin to zebrafish were investigated in this work. The results showed that MWCNTs and MWCNTs-COOH did not affect the preferential bioaccumulation of 1R-cis-BF in zebrafish following exposure to cis-BF enantiomers for 28 days, but which increased cis-BF accumulation amount by 1.03-1.48 times. Further research demonstrated that the genes related to immunity, endocrine activity and neurotoxicity showed enantioselective expression in different zebrafish tissues, and sex-specific differences were observed. The levels of c-fos, th, syn2a, 17β-hsd and cc-chem were expressed as 1.09-2.84 times higher in females and males treated with 1R-cis-BF than in the 1S-cis-BF-treated groups. However, in the presence of MWCNTs or MWCNTs-COOH, c-fos, th, syn2a, 17β-hsd and cc-chem levels were expressed as 1.53-14.92 times higher in females and males treated with 1S-cis-BF than in 1R-cis-BF-treated groups, which indicated that enantioselective expression was altered. The effects of different types of MWCNTs on the enantioselective bioaccumulation and toxicity of BF in zebrafish have little difference. In summary, the presence of MWCNTs or MWCNTs-COOH increased the impact of BF on zebrafish. Therefore, the risks posed by coexisting nanomaterials and chiral pesticides in aquatic environments should be considered.

Evaluating the cytotoxicity and pathogenicity of multi-walled carbon nanotube through weighted gene co-expression network analysis: a nanotoxicogenomics study

Background

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) is one of the most momentous carbonaceous nanoparticles which is widely used for various applications such as electronics, vehicles, and therapeutics. However, their possible toxicity and adverse effects convert them into a major health threat for humans and animals.

Results

In this study, we employed weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify the co-expressed gene groups and dysregulated pathways due to the MWCNT exposure. For this purpose, three weighted gene co-expression networks for the microarray gene expression profiles of the mouse after 1, 6, and 12-month post-exposure to MWCNT were constructed. The module-trait analysis specified the significant modules related to different doses (1, 10, 40, and 80 µg) of MWCNT. Afterward, common genes between co-regulated and differentially expressed genes were determined. The further pathway analysis highlighted the enrichment of genes including Actb, Ube2b, Psme3, Ezh2, Alas2, S100a10, Ypel5, Rhoa, Rac1, Ube2l6, Prdx2, Ctsb, Bnip3l, Gp6, Myh9, Ube2k, Mbnl1, Kbtbd8, Riok3, Itgb1, Rap1a, and Atp5h in immune-, inflammation-, and protein metabolism-related pathways.

Conclusions

This study discloses the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity effects of various doses of MWCNT which also affect the metabolism system. The identified genes can serve as potential biomarkers and therapeutic candidates. However, further studies should be performed to validate them in human cells.

Enantioselective bioaccumulation and toxicity of the novel chiral antifungal agrochemical penthiopyrad in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides has been extensively used in agricultural production, which are not easily degrade in the environment and have various toxic effects on aquatic organisms. However, the toxic effects information to non-target organisms were mostly at the racemate level, which were poorly understood at the enantiomers level. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the enantioselective bioaccumulation behavior and toxic effects of penthiopyrad in zebrafish. Significant enantioselective bioaccumulation was observed when exposed to penthiopyrad at two dose levels: S-(+)-penthiopyrad was preferentially accumulated. Moreover, S-(+)-penthiopyrad caused oxidative stress in zebrafish liver. The results of real-time RT-PCR analyses revealed that exposure to penthiopyrad also enantioselectivity interfered with the expression of mitochondrial respiratory complexes, mtDNA synthesis, lipid metabolism and apoptosis-related genes. S-(+)-penthiopyrad significantly decreased most of the expression of the above gene, which showed higher toxic effects. We inferred that the toxicity mechanism of penthiopyrad was caused by lipid metabolism disorder and mitochondrial dysfunction in zebrafish, and further leads to apoptosis even DNA damage. This study provides more accurate data to investigate the environmental impact of penthiopyrad at the enantiomer level.

The effect of microplastics on behaviors of chiral imidazolinone herbicides in the aquatic environment: Residue, degradation and distribution

The pollution of aquatic environments by microplastics and herbicides has become a global concern. This study was focused on imazamox, imazapic, and imazethapyr sorption to polypropylene microplastics in water. And the potential effects of microplastics on herbicide enantiomer degradation and distributions in water, sediment, and water-sediment microcosms were investigated. Adsorption experiment results indicated that herbicide sorption to microplastics involved both chemisorption and physical adsorption. Degradation experiment results indicated that microplastics could markedly increase herbicide persistence in water and sediment. Marked stereoselective degradation was not found for the three herbicides in water and sediment, but stereoselective degradation of imazapic in water containing microplastics was found. The water-sediment microcosms experiment results indicated that microplastics have significant effect on stereoselectivity degradation and distribution in water and water-sediment microcosms for imazapic, and have little effect on stereoselectivity behaviors of imazamox and imazethapyr in water-sediment systems. Furthermore, the microcosm experiment results also indicated that herbicides can partition between water and microplastics and that microplastics could affect herbicide persistence and distributions in aquatic environments. The present study provides new insights into the fate of chiral pollutants in aquatic environments containing microplastics, and contributes to understanding behaviors of herbicides and microplastics in aquatic environments.
