Abstract
This study evaluated the ability of triethyl benzyl ammonium chloride/lactic acid deep eutectic solvent extracted lignin (TEBAC/LA-DES-L) to adsorb methylene blue (MB) without additional functional group modification. The structure and morphology of TEBAC/LA-DES-L were characterized using SEM, BET, FT-IR, and TGA techniques. Various factors influencing MB adsorption, such as extraction temperature, solution pH, adsorbent dose, initial MB concentration, adsorption time, and reaction temperature, were investigated. The Redlich-Peterson isotherm displayed a good fit for the experimental data, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 85.16 mg/g. Kinetic analysis suggested that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model, with adsorption occurring in <100 min on DES-L-4 h. The mechanism of MB adsorption on DES-L-4 h was attributed to electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interactions, and hydrogen bonding forces. Overall, DES-L-4 h demonstrated high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, making it a promising adsorbent for effectively removing cationic dyes from wastewater.

Abstract
Starch based carbon aerogel has attracted significant attention due to the wide source, environmental friendliness and low price of raw materials. Here, starch based carbon aerogel was fabricated by graft reaction and cross-linking reaction of starch. The network structure of starch hydrogel was optimized through graft and cross-linking reaction. After freeze drying and high temperature carbonization, the obtained carbon aerogel that carbonized at 800 °C showed a specific surface area of 1508 m2·g-1 without activation which is far higher than that of other unactivated carbon aerogels. The starch based carbon aerogel carbonized at 800 °C exhibited superior methylene blue adsorption ability with a maximum adsorption capacity of 963.5 mg·g-1 as a result of its rich surface functional groups, high specific surface area, and reasonable pore size distribution. Furthermore, the carbon aerogel carbonized at 700 °C exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 180.1 F·g-1 at a current density of 1 A·g-1as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Overall, this work provides a new method to prepare high performance starch based carbon aerogel.

Abstract
Hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides have received special attention in the last decade due to their interesting features, such as availability, biocompatibility, biodegradability and safety. Such characteristics may make them sustainable and eco-friendly materials for water and wastewater treatment, meeting the concept of circular economy. In this study, a novel double-cross-linked alginate-based hydrogel has been successfully synthesized using epichlorhydrin and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) as cross-linker agents and then used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye under different operating conditions. The obtained hydrogel was deeply characterized by using various analytical techniques, namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Experimental results showed that the synthesized double cross-linked hydrogel with relatively high STMP concentration (0.26 M) has promising structural and textural properties. This material exhibited excellent removal ability towards MB with a maximum adsorption capacity of about 992 mg/g for an initial pH of 10. The kinetic and isotherm modeling study revealed that the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models fitted well the measured adsorption experimental data. The MB adsorption process onto the synthesized hydrogel is exothermic, feasible and spontaneous. It mainly includes electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds. These findings suggest that double-cross-linked alginate-based hydrogel can be considered as an attractive and potential adsorbent for an effective cationic dye removal from aqueous environments. The use of such a green adsorbent for the treatment of organic-pollutants-rich industrial wastewaters promotes sustainability and circular economy concepts.

Abstract
In this work, we introduce a novel defective analogue of the representative 6-connected zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808), by employing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (H2BTC-SO3Na) as a defect inducer via a mixed-linker approach. The structural integrity and different physicochemical properties were investigated by various characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen physisorption at 77 K. Additionally, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were employed to confirm the presence of 6.9 mol% of the 5-sulfoisophthalate ligand within the highly crystalline MOF-808 structure. The defective material exhibited significant enhancements in the removal efficiency of various organic dyes, including approximately 64% and 77% for quinoline yellow and sunset yellow, and 56% and 13% for rhodamine B and malachite green, compared to its pristine counterpart. Importantly, the defective MOF-808 showed a remarkable selectivity toward anionic species in binary-component dyes comprising both anionic and cationic dyes.

Cellulose de-polymerization is selective for bioethanol refinery and multi-functional biochar assembly using brittle stalk of corn mutant. Int J Biol Macromol 2024; 264:130448. Abstract
As lignocellulose recalcitrance principally restricts for a cost-effective conversion into biofuels and bioproducts, this study re-selected the brittle stalk of corn mutant by MuDR-transposon insertion, and detected much reduced cellulose polymerization and crystallinity. Using recyclable CaO chemical for biomass pretreatment, we determined a consistently enhanced enzymatic saccharification of pretreated corn brittle stalk for higher-yield bioethanol conversion. Furthermore, the enzyme-undigestible lignocellulose was treated with two-step thermal-chemical processes via FeCl2 catalysis and KOH activation to generate the biochar with significantly raised adsorption capacities with two industry dyes (methylene blue and Congo red). However, the desirable biochar was attained from one-step KOH treatment with the entire brittle stalk, which was characterized as the highly-porous nanocarbon that is of the largest specific surface area at 1697.34 m2/g and 2-fold higher dyes adsorption. Notably, this nanocarbon enabled to eliminate the most toxic compounds released from CaO pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, and also showed much improved electrochemical performance with specific capacitance at 205 F/g. Hence, this work has raised a mechanism model to interpret how the recalcitrance-reduced lignocellulose is convertible for high-yield bioethanol and multiple-function biochar with high performance.

Abstract
Herein, for the first time, a simple, green, direct immersion immobilisation method is reported for graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets using pomelo peel (PL) as a substrate. A GO/PL porous sponge was successfully prepared and used to remove methylene blue (MB) from dye wastewater. Considering the porosity, hydrophilicity and elasticity of the PL, the PL was placed in a GO aqueous suspension through direct immersion immobilisation. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the peel could effectively capture and immobilise the GO nanosheets. GO was adsorbed into the PL pores and dispersed throughout the PL. Finally, the prepared super-hydrophilic and elastic GO/PL exhibited excellent adsorption performance towards MB in dye wastewater. The adsorption results revealed that the adsorption behaviour was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and quasi-secondary kinetic models. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of GO/PL towards MB was 124.2 mg/g, exceeding the values obtained for most of the previously reported adsorbents. Moreover, after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, GO/PL retained 75% of its initial adsorption capacity. Mechanistic analysis revealed that pore filling, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and hydrogen bonding interactions are the primary driving forces facilitating MB adsorption.

Abstract
This work explores the effect of humic acids (HA) fractionation on the sorption ability of a natural zeolite (NYT)-HA adduct. HA were extracted from compost, fractionated via the pH fractionation method, and characterized via UV-Vis spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The HA samples were immobilized onto NYT via thermal treatment. The resulting adducts (NYT-HA) were tested for their ability to remove methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. It was found that the sorption performance of NYT-HA strongly depends on the chemical characteristics of humic acids. Sorption capacity increased with the molecular weight and hydrophobicity degree of the HA fractions. Hydrophobic and π-π interactions are likely the primary mechanisms by which MB interacts with HA. The sorption kinetic data conform to the pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich isotherm model adequately described the sorption equilibrium and revealed that the uptake of MB onto NYT-HA is endothermic in nature.

The global energy shortage and environmental degradation are two major issues of concern in today's society. The production of renewable energy and the treatment of pollutants are currently the mainstream research directions in the field of photocatalysis. In addition, over the last decade or so, graphene (GR) has been widely used in photocatalysis due to its unique physical and chemical properties, such as its large light-absorption range, high adsorption capacity, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic conductivity. Here, we first introduce the unique properties of graphene, such as its high specific surface area, chemical stability, etc. Then, the basic principles of photocatalytic hydrolysis, pollutant degradation, and the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 are summarized. We then give an overview of the optimization strategies for graphene-based photocatalysis and the latest advances in its application. Finally, we present challenges and perspectives for graphene-based applications in this field in light of recent developments.

Abstract
Water purification using thin membranes at high pressures through adsorption and size exclusion is the widely used mechanism due to its simplicity and enhanced efficiency compared to other traditional water purification methods. Aerogels have the potential to replace conventional thin membranes considering their unmatched adsorption/absorption capacity and higher water flux due to their unique highly porous (99 %) 3D structure, ultra-low density (~1.1 to 500 mg/cm3), and very high surface area. The availability of a large number of functional groups, surface tunability, hydrophilicity, tensile strength and flexibility of nanocellulose (NC) makes it a potential candidate for aerogel preparation. This review discusses the preparation and employment of NC-based aerogels in the removal of dyes, metal ions and oils/organic solvents. It also offers recent updates on the effect of various parameters that enhance its adsorption/absorption performance. The future perspectives of NC aerogels and their performance with the emerging materials chitosan and graphene oxide are also compared.

Abstract
In this study, Fe2O3 nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) and CaO NPs were loaded on the zeolite sphere carrier to create nano Fe-Ca bimetallic oxide (Fe-Ca-NBMO) modified substrate, which was introduced into constructed wetland (CW) to remove Cu(II) and Ni(II) via constructing "substrate-microorganism" system. Adsorption experiments showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacities of Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate for Cu(II) and Ni(II) were respectively 706.48 and 410.59 mg/kg at an initial concentration of 20 mg/L, 2.45 and 2.39 times of gravel. The Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal efficiencies in CW with Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate respectively reached 99.7% and 99.9% at an influent concentration of 100 mg/L, significantly higher than those in gravel-based CW (47.0% and 34.3%). Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate could promote Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal by increasing electrostatic adsorption, chemical precipitation, as well as the abundances of resistant microorganisms (Geobacter, Desulfuromonas, Zoogloea, Dechloromonas, and Desulfobacter) and functional genes (copA, cusABC, ABC.CD.P, gshB, and exbB). This study provided an effective method to enhance Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal of electroplating wastewater by CW with Fe-Ca-NBMO modified substrate.

Abstract
Water scarcity is a growing global issue, particularly in areas with limited freshwater sources, urging for sustainable water management practices to insure equitable access for all people. One way to address this problem is to implement advanced methods for treating existing contaminated water to offer more clean water. Adsorption through membranes technology is an important water treatment technique, and nanocellulose (NC)-, chitosan (CS)-, and graphene (G)- based aerogels are considered good adsorbents. To estimate the efficiency of dye removal for the mentioned aerogels, we intend to use an unsupervised machine learning approach known as "Principal Component Analysis". PCA showed that the chitosan-based ones have the lowest regeneration efficiencies, along with a moderate number of regenerations. NC2, NC9, and G5 are preferred where there is high adsorption energy to the membrane, and high porosities could be tolerated, but this allows lower removal efficiencies of dye contaminants. NC3, NC5, NC6, and NC11 have high removal efficiencies even with low porosities and surface area. In brief, PCA presents a powerful tool to unravel the efficiency of aerogels towards dye removal. Hence, several conditions need to be considered when employing or even manufacturing the investigated aerogels.

Abstract
The rapid growth of industrialization has resulted in the release of large quantities of pollutants into the environment, especially dyes and heavy metals, which are environmentally hazardous for humans and animals. It is considered as the most promising and environmentally friendly route to develop green materials by using the green modification method, which has no negative impact on the environment. In this work, the green material of polylactic acid (PLA) was used as the substrate material, and a novel modification method of polydopamine (PDA)-assisted polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafting was developed. The electrospun PLA fibers are mainly composed of stereocomplex crystallites, which were achieved via the electrospinning of poly(l-lactic acid) and poly(d-lactic acid). The water-soluble PEI was grafted onto the PDA-modified PLA fibers through the glutaraldehyde-assisted cross-linking reaction. The prepared composite fibers can be degraded, which is environmentally friendly and meets the requirements of sustainable development. The potential application of such PLA composite fibers in wastewater treatment was intensively evaluated. The results show that at appropriate fabrication conditions (PDA concentration of 3 g·L-1 and a PEI molecular weight of 70,000 g·mol-1), the composite fibers exhibit the maximum adsorption capacities of 612 and 398.41 mg·g-1 for methyl orange (MO) and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], respectively. Simultaneously, about 64.79% of Cr(VI) adsorbed on the composite fibers was reduced to Cr(III). The above results show that the PLA composite fibers have a good development prospect in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Environmental pollution is a critical issue due to its impact on humans and other organisms. An important demand nowadays is the need for a green method to synthesize nanoparticles to remove pollutants. Therefore, this study focuses for the first time on synthesizing the MoO3 and WO3 nanorods using the green and self-assembled Leidenfrost method. The XRD, SEM, BET and FTIR analyses were used to characterize the yield powder. The XRD results emphasize the formation of WO3 and MoO3 in nanoscale with crystallite sizes 46.28 and 53.05 nm and surface area 2.67 and 24.72 m2 g-1, respectively. A comparative study uses synthetic nanorods as adsorbents to adsorb methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions. A batch adsorption experiment was performed to investigate the effects of adsorbent doses, shaking time, solution pH and dye concentration to remove MB dye. The results demonstrate that the optimal removal was achieved at pH 2 and 10 with 99% for WO3 and MoO3, respectively. The experimental isothermal data follow Langmuir for both adsorbents with a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.37 and 151.41 mg g-1 for WO3 and MoO3.

Abstract
The structured adsorption filter material is one of the ways to enhance the practical applicability of powdered adsorbents, which have limitations in the real water treatment process due to difficulty in the separation process. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology was applied to prepare filter materials for water treatment processes. A 3D-printed graphene-oxide (GO)-based adsorbent is prepared on a polylactic acid (PLA) scaffold. The surface of the PLA scaffold was modified by subjecting it to strong alkaline or organic solvent treatment to enhance GO doping for realizing effective adsorption of cationic dye solutions. When subjected to 95% acetone treatment, the structural properties of PLA changed, and particularly, two main hydrophilic functional groups (carboxylic acids and hydroxyls) were newly formed on the PLA through cleavage of the ester bond of the aliphatic polyester. Owing to these changes, the roughness of the PLA surface increased, and its tensile strength decreased. Meanwhile, its surface was doped mainly with GO, resulting in approximately 75% methylene blue (MB) adsorption on the 3D-printed GO-based PLA filter. Based on the established optimal pretreatment conditions, a kinetic MB sorption study and an isotherm study were conducted to evaluate the 3D-printed GO-based PLA filter. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit, and the MB adsorption was better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. These results suggested that chemical adsorption was the main driver of the reaction, and monolayer sorption occurred on the adsorbent surface. The results of this study highlight the importance of PLA surface modification in enhancing GO doping and achieving effective MB adsorption in aqueous solutions. Ultimately, this study highlights the potential of using 3D printing technology to fabricate the components required for implementing water treatment processes.

Abstract
This study aims to develop an alternating polyketone containing cationic groups in one and four alternating positions for increased functionality. A novel polyarylidene ketone was synthesized using simple condensation polymerization of terephthaldehyde and 2,5-hexane dione (PAK) The physicochemical properties of the resulting polymer were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, UV-Visible absorbance, fluorescence, and SEM investigations. The findings show that the polymer is amorphous, has good thermal stability, and emits red light. It can also be used as a dye adsorbent in aqueous solutions, with high selectivity for the cationic dye methylene blue (MB). The adsorbent efficiency of PAK was measured as a function of pH, dosage, and initial dye concentration; the greatest dye removal of 96 % was obtained at pH 10, 50 mg dosage, and initial dye concentration of 20 ppm. Kinetics and isotherms were studied, showing that the pseudo-second-order model described kinetic data better than Freundlich and Langmuir and revealed a satisfactory chemisorption process. This study suggests that PAK can purify MB dyeing wastewater, remove Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Fe3+ metal ions well, and is selective for Fe3+ and Cu2+; ion adsorption is chelating-based.

Abstract
The focus of this work was on developing a green, low-cost, and efficient biosorbent based on the biological structure and properties of MT and applying it to the remediation of cationic dyes in dye wastewater. The adsorption performance and mechanism of MT on methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. The results demonstrated that the highest adsorption values of MT for MB (411 mg/g) and CV (553 mg/g) were greatly higher than the reported values of other biosorbents. In addition, the adsorption behaviors of methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) by MT were spontaneous exothermic reactions and closely followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. Further, the depleted MT was regenerated using pyrolysis mode to convert depleted MT into MT-biochar (MBC). The maximum adsorption of Cu2+ and Pb2+ by MBC was up to 320 mg/g and 840 mg/g, respectively. In conclusion, this work presented a new option for the adsorption of cationic dyes in wastewater and a new perspective for the treatment of depleted biosorbents.

Abstract
Elimination of organic dyes from wastewater is very important for our safe environment and sound health. In this work, adsorptive removal of cationic dyes, especially small ones, was investigated with carbonaceous materials to develop a competitive adsorption technology. To improve the performance of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbons (MDCs) in dye adsorption, an MDC, derived from a MOF (MAF-6), was oxidatively functionalized with ammonium persulfate solutions (APSs). Although the porosity of pristine MDC decreased with functionalization via oxidation, functionalized MDCs (FMDCs), especially FMDC(1.0) that was obtained via treating MDC with APS (1.0 M), showed remarkable performances in the adsorption of small cationic dyes like methylene blue (MB) and azure B. For example, FMDC(1.0) had the maximum adsorption capacity (Qo) of 625.0 mg/g (for MB) which is larger than any reported value with carbonaceous materials. Moreover, the obtained Qo was around 4 and 2 times that of activated carbon with Qo of 160 mg/g and MDC with Qo of 298 mg/g, respectively. On the contrary, oxidative treatment of MDC was negative in adsorption of an anionic dye such as methyl orange. Moreover, the functionalized MDC was not very effective in the adsorption of cationic dyes with large sizes (like brilliant green, crystal violet, Janus green B, and rhodamine B) because of the limited pore size of the studied adsorbent FMDC(1.0). The remarkable adsorption of MB over FMDC(1.0) could be explained by electrostatic and π-π interactions. Finally, the facile recyclability of the FMDC(1.0) in MB adsorption was confirmed via successive adsorptions, FT-IR, and nitrogen adsorption; therefore, FMDC(1.0) can be suggested as a potential adsorbent to remove cationic dyes, especially with small molecular sizes.

Abstract
To improve the hydrophobicity and poor separability of hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) in extraction, a porous magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@SHCP) was constructed by facile post-modification to introduce sulfonic acid groups and magnetic nanoparticles for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Owing to the double extraction mechanism adopted by Fe3O4@SHCP, it has a high extraction efficiency for HAAs. Coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 5 HAAs in baked cakes were detected at one time. Under optimal extraction conditions, the enrichment factor of HAAs was up to 952-986, with LODs at 0.05-0.3 ng·g-1. Based on the HPLC method, novel digital imaging colorimetry (DIC) was developed to accurately and rapidly monitor HAAs in cakes. Additionally, the established DIC method has been used to successfully evaluate the effect of baking temperature and duration on HAAs in baked cakes.

Abstract
In order to properly reuse food waste and remove various contaminants from wastewater, the development of green, sustainable and clean technologies has demonstrated potential in the efficient inhibition of secondary pollution to the environment. In this study, an economical and green method was used to prepare biochar from crisp persimmon peel (CPP) using flash-vacuum pyrolysis at different temperatures (200–700 °C; referred to as CPP200–CPP700). CPP200 has high polarity, low aromaticity and high oxygen-containing functional groups that exhibit superior MB adsorption capabilities. CPP200 that was prepared at a relatively low temperature of 200 °C exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 59.72 mg/g toward methylene blue (MB), which was relatively higher than that for alizarin yellow R (4.05 mg/g) and neutral red (39.08 mg/g), indicating that CPP200 possesses a higher adsorption selectivity for cationic dyes. Kinetics investigation revealed that the kinetic data of CPP200 for the adsorption of MB was better fitted by a linear pseudo-second-order model. Isothermal studies indicated that the linear Langmuir model was more suitable for describing the adsorption process. The adsorption thermodynamics illustrated that the adsorption of MB onto CPP200 was spontaneous and endothermic. EDS and IR analyses of CPP200 for both pre- and post-adsorption of MB showed that electrostatic interactions between oxygen-containing groups on biochar and target MB dominated the adsorption procedure, in addition to hydrogen bonding interactions. Reusability tests confirmed the excellent regeneration characteristics of CPP200, indicating that CPP200 may be used as a green, sustainable, highly efficient and recyclable adsorbent for the selective removal of cationic organic dyes.

Abstract
Herein, it is aimed to develop a high-performance monolithic adsorbent to be utilized in methyl orange (MO) adsorption. Therefore, amino-functionalized three-dimensional graphene networks (3D-GNf) fulfilling the requirements of reusability and high capacity have been fabricated via hydrothermal self-assembly approach followed by a double-crosslinking strategy. The potential utilization of 3D-GNf as an adsorbent for removal MO has been assessed using both batch-adsorption studies and an artificial neural network (ANN) approach. Graphene oxide sheets have been amino-functionalized and cross-linked, by ethylenediamine (EDA) during hydrothermal treatment, following the glutaraldehyde has used as a double-crosslinking agent to facilitate the crosslinking of architecture. The successful fabrication of 3D-GNf has been confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms have revealed the high specific surface area (1015 m2 g-1) with high pore volume (1.054 cm3 g-1) and hierarchical porous structure of 3D-GNf. The effect of initial concentration, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity have been thoroughly studied, and the kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of MO adsorption have been modelled. The MO adsorption has been well defined by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a monolayer adsorption capacity of 270.27 mg g-1 at 25 °C. The thermodynamic findings have revealed MO adsorption has occurred spontaneously with an endothermic process. The Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm has been implemented to train the ANN model, which has used the activation functions of tansig and purelin functions at the hidden and output layers, respectively. An optimum ANN model with high-performance metrics (coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.9995; mean squared error, MSE = 0.0008) composed of three hidden layers with 5 neurons in each layer was constructed to forecast MO adsorption. The findings have shown that experimental results are consistent with ANN-based data, implying that the suggested ANN model may be used to forecast cationic dye adsorption.

Abstract
In this study, a new cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite aerogel was fabricated using a green and facile mussel-inspired coating strategy. First, the CNF hydrogel was crosslinked by calcium ion followed by immersion in dopamine solution. Second, the surface of CNF was modified using polydopamine (PDA) to obtain PDA@CNF (PCNF) composite aerogel. The PCNF composite aerogels had large surface areas (368.15 m2/g) and low bulk density (27.2 mg/cm3). The composite aerogel exhibited improved mechanical properties, which were almost three times compared with those of CNF aerogel. Moreover, PCNF composite aerogel had good resilience under a wet state. The PDA functional layer remarkably enhanced the adsorption capacities of the composite aerogel for methylene blue (MB). The maximum adsorption of MB was 208 mg/g at an initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic behaviors of the composite aerogel were consistent with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. In addition, the PCNF composite aerogels had a high adsorption capacity over a wide pH range. The reuse experiment showed that the removal efficiency of the composite aerogel remained higher than 85% after five cycles. Therefore, PCNF composite aerogels may have potential application in wastewater treatment due to its environmental sustainability and low energy consumption.

Abstract
A wide range of organic pollutants in industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and domestic discharges are exacerbating water scarcity, leading to water-borne ailments, and adversely affecting the marine ecosystem and biodiversity. The efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective materials need to be addressed urgently for the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, ultra-light (0.018 g.cm-3) and highly porous (96.4%) composite aerogel is prepared by gelatinization of graphene oxide with fruit waste-derived cellulose. The macroscopic porosity generated by interconnecting cellulosic skeleton and graphene oxide sheets via hydrogen bonding network provided ample avenues for transport and diffusion of organic dyes-enriched wastewater throughout the cellulose-graphene oxide composite aerogel (CGA). Consequently, organic dyes are efficiently adsorbed by easily accessible surface sites distributed throughout the CGA. The size, charge, and chemical structure of organic dyes along with textural features and accessible surface active sites of CGA governed the adsorption process. The spectroscopic analyses based on FTIR, Raman, and XPS measurements suggest electrostatic, n-π, π-π, cation-π interactions, dipole-dipole hydrogen, and Yoshida hydrogen linkages as major interactive pathways for the adsorption of organic dyes by the CGA. Moreover, the composite aerogel furnished an excellent recyclability for the adsorptive removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. The present work promises the potential of 2D nanostructured layered materials and fruit-waste-derived composite aerogels for sustainable utilization in wastewater treatment, which can be an excellent step towards water security.

Abstract
Toxic heavy metal ions, valuable noble metal ions and organic dyes are significant concerns in wastewater treatment. In this work, MoO3 nanobelts (MoO3 NBs) prepared by solvothermal method and MoS2 nanoarrays (MoS2 NAs) constructed using MoO3 NBs precursor were proposed to effectively remove heavy/noble metal ions and organic dyes, such as Pb(II), Au(III) and Methylene Blue (MB). The two adsorbents exhibited the excellent adsorption capacity towards Pb(II), Au(III) and MB. The maximum removal capacity of Pb(II) and MB on MoO3 NBs was 684.93 mg/g and 1408 mg/g, respectively, whereas that of Au(III) and MB on MoS2 NAs was 1280.2 mg/g and 768 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters were calculated from the temperature-dependent curves, suggesting that the removal of Pb(II) and Au(III) on both adsorbents was spontaneous and endothermic. The new adsorbents introduced here were high adsorption activity, ease of fabrication, high scalability, good chemical stability, great repeatability and abundant and cheap supply, which were highly attractive for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Nowadays, large-scale oriented functional porous materials have been sought after by researchers. However, regulation of the long-range uniform and oriented structures of the material remains a challenge. Herein, ultralong anisotropic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) aerogels with uniformly ordered structures of pore walls inspired by lotus petioles were constructed by applying external speeds to counterbalance the growth driving forces of ice crystals. Based on the growth law of ice crystals, the ice crystals grew at a stable rate when the applied external speed was 0.04 mm/s, ensuring the consistent orientation of the large-scale CNF aerogel. The aerogel exhibited a rapid long-range directional transport ability to different liquid solvents, delivering ethanol up to 40 mm from bottom to top within 50 s. Moreover, by introducing rectorites with good cation-exchange properties, the resulting long-range composite possessed an enhanced adsorption capacity for methylene blue. Furthermore, aerogel successfully achieved real-time dye purification at a long distance, such as fast dye adsorption or selective adsorption. This flexible and straightforward strategy of fabricating ultralong oriented CNF aerogel materials is expected to promote the development of functional aerogels in directional liquid transport and sewage treatment.

Abstract
Citrus pectin was used as a precursor and cellulose nanofibers as a reinforcing agent, a mixed aerogel with enhanced structural properties was prepared. Pickering emulsion was a template for aerogel formation, embedding thymol. Its potential application in humidity regulating packaging has been investigated. Results showed that emulsion gel containing cellulose nanofibers has slightly larger droplet diameter, better viscoelasticity and emulsification. Composite aerogel has larger pore size and thinner pore wall. Additionally, its tensile and compressive properties have been significantly improved. Moisture absorption was close to 100% of its own weight, thymol was released slowly. Compared with Escherichia coli, aerogel has better resistance to Staphylococcus aureus. When applied on fresh Agaricus bisporus. It was found that relative humidity in package can be stabilized at about 97%. Hardness, color, total phenol content, cell membrane integrity and total antioxidant capacity of Agaricus bisporus were maintained and fresh-keeping period was extended to 5 days.

Abstract
Water treatment using activated carbon is widely accepted, despite its high production cost. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the potential of cassava stem in activated carbon form for methylene blue (MB) dye uptake from water. Raw cassava stem (RCS) was also utilized to evaluate the difference between cassava stem in its raw form and after being converted to the activated carbon (ACS). The MB adsorption from water using the RCS and ACS was done in this study. The batch adsorption study showed fast MB uptake by ACS at 60 min contact time, while higher adsorbent dosage and higher pH contributed to higher adsorption percentage. The thermodynamic study showed positive values of ∆H° of ACS, indicating that the adsorption process of MB was endothermic. Meanwhile, the negative value of ∆G° showed that the adsorption processes of MB were spontaneous. The thermodynamic study showed higher fitting to Langmuir isotherm, with data from the kinetic study showing better pseudo-second-order equation fitting, which suggests the chemisorption process had happened. The highest adsorption recorded by ACS was 384.61 mg/g, indicating the possibility of cassava stem as the lower cost raw material for activated carbon production with excellent adsorption characteristics.

Cellulose citrate: a convenient and reusable bio-adsorbent for effective removal of methylene blue dye from artificially contaminated water. RSC Adv 2021; 11:34309-34318. Abstract
In the present work, we proved the efficacy of cellulose citrate to remove methylene blue (MB) from artificially contaminated water. MB is a widely used dye, but because of its chemical aromatic structure, it is significantly stable with quite slow biodegradation, causing consequent serious health problems for people and significant environmental pollution. Cellulose citrate, the bio-adsorbent proposed and studied by us to remediate water polluted by MB, is produced by a green, cheap and fast procedure that makes use of two abundant natural products, cellulose and citric acid. The average of two citrate groups for each glucose unit of cellulose chains allows this material to have many carboxylic groups available for interaction with the cationic dye. The characterization was carried out through FT-IR, SEM, specific surface area, pore structure parameters and zeta potential. The negative value of the zeta potential at neutral pH is consistent with the affinity of this material for the adsorption of cationic compounds like MB. The activity of the adsorbent at different times, temperatures, pH and concentrations was investigated. The process followed monolayer adsorption typical of the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 96.2 mg g-1, while for the kinetic studies the process followed a pseudo-second order model. The highest levels of adsorption were reported using solutions of dye with concentrations under 100 mg L-1. The adsorbent can be regenerated several times without a significant loss in the adsorption capacity, and it is not strongly affected by temperature and pH, giving rise to a simple and eco-sustainable procedure for water remediation. Therefore, we conclude that cellulose citrate can be considered as a promising bio-adsorbent for the removal of MB and other cationic pollutants from the environment.

Toward enhanced catalytic activity of magnetic nanoparticles integrated into 3D reduced graphene oxide for heterogeneous Fenton organic dye degradation. Sci Rep 2021; 11:18343. Abstract
Composite Fenton nanocatalyst was prepared by water-based in situ creation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles integrated within the self-assembly 3D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel. The hybrid applied for the degradation of Acid Green 25 (AG-25) organic dye in an aqueous solution, in the presence of H2O2. By investigating the conditions that maximize the dye adsorption by the 3D composite, it was found that the pH of the solution should be adjusted between the pKa of the functional groups present on the rGO surface (carboxylic acid) and that of the dye (sulfonic acid) to promote electrostatic interactions dye-3D structure. Performed under these conditions, Fenton degradation of AG-25 in presence of H2O2 was completed in less than 30 min, including all the intermediate products, as demonstrated by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of the aqueous solution after discoloration. Moreover, this was achieved in a solution with as high a dye concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, with only 10 mg of 3D composite catalyst, at room temperature and without additional energy input. The high performance was attributed to the creation of charge-transfer complex between rGO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles throughout covalent bond C-O-Fe, the formation of which was promoted by the in situ synthesis procedure. For the first time, up to the authors' knowledge, AG-25 degradation mechanism was proposed.

Abstract
Human health is being threatened by cationic pollutants in wastewater, for example, methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II). Our research team successfully fabricated biofoam adsorbents from recycled bamboo waste that removed cationic pollutants via introducing bamboo fiber sources, i.e., bamboo fiber, bamboo α-cellulose fiber, and bamboo nanocellulose fiber, into a polyurethane (PU) foam matrix. The biofoam adsorbent with 1 g of nanocellulose (PUN1) presented high removal efficiencies for MB (95.52%) and Cu(II) (100%) in low cationic pollutant concentration aqueous solutions. The biofoam adsorbent with 1 g of bamboo fiber (PUB1) also displayed excellent removal efficiency for MB (98.61%) at pH 11. Meanwhile, 100% removal of Cu(II) was obtained by PUB1 at pH 7 (initial content = 15 mg/L). Furthermore, the PUN1 sample had excellent reusability, evidenced by 61.25% removal of MB after five adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting that PUN1 is a promising renewable adsorbent for cationic pollutants. In addition, PUB1 is a low-cost adsorbent with good adsorption efficiencies for MB in weak alkaline solutions and Cu(II) in neutral aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Aerogels are open, three-dimensional, porous materials characterized by outstanding properties, such as low density, high porosity, and high surface area. They have been used in various fields as adsorbents, catalysts, materials for thermal insulation, or matrices for drug delivery. Aerogels have been successfully used for environmental applications to eliminate toxic and harmful substances-such as metal ions or organic dyes-contained in wastewater, and pollutants-including aromatic or oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-contained in the air. This updated review on the use of different aerogels-for instance, graphene oxide-, cellulose-, chitosan-, and silica-based aerogels-provides information on their various applications in removing pollutants, the results obtained, and potential future developments.

Abstract
Heteroatom-doped carbon is widely used in the fields of adsorbents, electrode materials and catalysts due to its excellent physicochemical properties. N and S co-doped porous carbon spheres (N,S-PCSs) were synthesized using glucose and L-cysteine as carbon and heteroatom sources using a combined hydrothermal and KOH activation process. The physicochemical structures and single-factor methylene blue (MB) adsorption properties of the N,S-PCSs were then studied. The optimized N,S-PCSs-1 possessed a perfect spherical morphology with a 2-8-μm diameter and a large specific area of 1769.41 m2 g-1, in which the N and S contents were 2.97 at% and 0.88 at%, respectively. In the single-factor adsorption experiment for MB, the MB adsorption rate increased with an increase in carbon dosage and MB initial concentration, and the adsorption reached equilibrium within 2-3 h. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could excellently fit the experimental data with a high R2 (0.9999). The Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation fitted well with the experimental results with an R2 value of 0.9618, and the MB maximum adsorption quantity was 909.10 mg g-1. The adsorption of MB by N,S-PCSs-1 was a spontaneous, endothermic, and random process based on the thermodynamics analyses. The adsorption mechanism mainly involved Van der Waals force adsorption, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonds and Lewis acid-base interactions.

Abstract
A superhydrophobic fluorinated silica functionalized chitosan (F-CS) aerogel is constructed and fabricated by a simple and sustainable method in this study in order to achieve highly efficient gravity-driven oil/water separation performance. The fluorinated silica functionalization invests the pristine hydrophilic chitosan (CS) aerogel with promising superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 151.9°. This novel F-CS aerogel possesses three-dimensional structure with high porosity as well as good chemical stability and mechanical compression property. Moreover, it also shows striking self-cleaning performance and great oil adsorption capacity. Most importantly, the as-prepared aerogels exhibits fast and efficient separation of oil/water mixture by the gravity driven process with high separation efficiency. These great performances render the prepared F-CS aerogel a good candidate for oil/water separation in practical industrial application.
