Abstract
Introduction Food waste (FW) represents a significant social and environmental problem, with 1.3 billion tons of food wasted yearly worldwide. Even if consumers are increasingly aware of the phenomenon, it remains relevant, and understanding the behaviors of specific target audience segments appears instrumental to the planning of effective interventions. To this end, we designed an observational study to investigate, throughout an online questionnaire, FW-related habits of university students in a Southern Italian region. Methods A representative sample of 431 students from the University of Catanzaro Magna Graecia completed an online survey aimed at investigate FW related behaviors. A descriptive analysis was performed on the whole cohort, and a formal statistical analysis was carried out after excluding responders who had not correctly followed the survey instructions (n = 85). Differences were assessed by chi square (χ 2) tests. A food wasting score was generated, and differences in the score values were analyzed by Student T-test. Linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors contributing to the score. Results Overall, the results of our survey show a high prevalence of virtuous behaviors in the food purchasing phase; while, at home, less than 50% of respondents apply easy-to-implement waste prevention rules. The statistical analysis showed that the major determinants of FW were: no direct involvement in grocery shopping and male gender. Indeed, even if we observed several significant differences comparing subgroups based on established or putative determinants of FW behaviors, none survived matching for group size, gender and relevant food managing (shopping, storing, cooking) habits. The only exception was the more appropriate handling of "use by" products by respondents who received structured nutrition teaching, as opposed to students whose academic courses do not include this subject (adjusted p = 0.008). Conclusion Our data suggest that young adults are trying to implement strategies to reduce FW, even if there is room for improvement, particularly in the storage phase. Extending nutrition education to all university programs may be helpful in reaching this goal.

Abstract
Introduction: Lactic acid (LA) production from fossil resources is unsustainable owing to their depletion and environmental concerns. Thus, this study aimed to optimize the production of LA by Lactobacillus casei in a cultured medium containing fruit wastes (FWs) from agro-industries and second cheese whey (SCW) from dairy production, supplemented with maize steep liquor (MSL, 10% v/v) as the nitrogen source. Methods: The FWs were selected based on seasonal availability [early summer (early ripening peach), full summer (melon), late summer (pear), and early autumn (apple)] and SCW as annual waste. Small-scale preliminary tests as well as controlled fermenter experiments were performed to demonstrate the potential of using various food wastes as substrates for LA fermentation, except for apple pomace. Results and discussion: A 5-cycle repeated batch fermentation was conducted to optimize waste utilization and production, resulting in a total of 180.56 g/L of LA with a volumetric productivity of 0.88 g/L∙h. Subsequently, mechanical filtration and enzymatic hydrolysis were attempted. The total amount of LA produced in the 5-cycle repeated batch process was 397.1 g/L over 288 h, achieving a volumetric productivity of 1.32 g/L∙h. These findings suggest a promising biorefinery process for low-cost LA production from agri-food wastes.

Abstract
Fruit and vegetable wastes are linked to the depletion of natural resources and can pose serious health and environmental risks (e.g. eutrophication, water and soil pollution, and GHG emissions) if improperly managed. Current waste management practices often fail to recover high-value compounds from fruit wastes. Among emerging valorization methods, the utilization of fruit wastes as a feedstock for microalgal biorefineries is a promising approach for achieving net zero waste and sustainable development goals. This is due to the ability of microalgae to efficiently sequester carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, utilize nutrients in wastewater, grow in facilities located on non-arable land, and produce several commercially valuable compounds with applications in food, biofuels, bioplastics, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutics, and various other industries. However, the application of microalgal biotechnology towards upcycling fruit wastes has yet to be implemented on the industrial scale due to several economic, technical, operational, and regulatory challenges. Here, we identify sources of fruit waste along the food supply chain, evaluate current and emerging fruit waste management practices, describe value-added compounds in fruit wastes, and review current methods of microalgal cultivation using fruit wastes as a fermentation medium. We also propose some novel strategies for the practical implementation of industrial microalgal biorefineries for upcycling fruit waste in the future.

Abstract
Live vinegar is a product formed through a two-step fermentation process of a sugar substrate that has not been subjected to filtration or pasteurization. This is considered to preserve all nutrients and biologically active microorganisms, making it a product with a valuable composition and beneficial properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and antioxidant properties of the selected vinegars available on the Polish food market. The material in the study consisted of four live (naturally turbid, unfiltered, unpasteurized) fruit or vegetable vinegars: apple, pear, rhubarb, and lemon. Spectrophotometric, HPLC, and GC methods were used. Among the vinegars tested, lemon vinegar had the highest vitamin C content-15.95 mg/100 mL. Apple vinegar proved to be the best source of polyphenols and flavonoids (TPC-191.97 mg GAE/L, TFC-70.22 mg RE/L). All of the vinegars contained dihydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, 2-hydroxycinnamic acid, and myricetin. The acetic acid content of the tested vinegars ranged from 29.180 to 38.125 mM/L. The pH values ranged from 3.14 to 3.41. In conclusion, the most promising nutraceutical with potentially beneficial health-promoting properties seems to be apple vinegar.

Abstract
The sustainable economy has shown a renewed interest in acquiring access to the resources required to promote innovative practices that favor recycling and the reuse of existing, unconsidered things over newly produced ones. The production of biohydrogen through dark anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes is one of the intriguing possibilities for replacing fossil-based fuels through the circular economy. At present, plant-derived waste from the agro-based industry is the main global concern. When these wastes are improperly disposed of in landfills, they become the habitat for several pathogens. Additionally, it contaminates surface water as a result of runoff, and the leachate that is created from the waste enters groundwater and degrades its quality. However, cellulose and hemicellulose-rich plant wastes from agriculture fields and agro-based industries have been employed as the most efficient feedstock since carbohydrates are the primary substrate for the synthesis of biohydrogen. To produce biohydrogen from plant-derived wastes on a large scale, it is necessary to explore comprehensive knowledge of lab-scale parameters and pretreatment strategies. This paper summarizes the problems associated with the improper management of plant-derived wastes and discusses the recent developments in dark fermentation and substrate pretreatment techniques with the goal of gaining significant insight into the biohydrogen production process. It also highlights the utilization of anaerobic digestate, which is left over after biohydrogen gas as feedstock for the development of value-added products such as volatile fatty acids (VFA), biochar, and biofertilizer.

Abstract
The obtained seeds from fruit processing are considered by-products containing proteins that could be utilized as ingredients in food manufacturing. However, in the specific case of soursop seeds, their usage for the preparation of protein isolates is limited. In this investigation a protein isolate from soursop seeds (SSPI) was obtained by alkaline extraction and isoelectric precipitation methods. The SSPI was sonicated at 200, 400 and 600 W during 15 and 30 min and its effect on the physicochemical, functional, biochemical, and structural properties was evaluated. Ultrasound increased (p < 0.05) up to 5 % protein content, 261 % protein solubility, 60.7 % foaming capacity, 30.2 % foaming stability, 86 % emulsifying activity index, 4.1 % emulsifying stability index, 85.4 % in vitro protein digestibility, 423.4 % albumin content, 83 % total sulfhydryl content, 316 % free sulfhydryl content, 236 % α-helix, 46 % β-sheet, and 43 % β-turn of SSPI, in comparison with the control treatment without ultrasound. Furthermore, ultrasound decreased (p < 0.05) up to 50 % particle size, 37 % molecular flexibility, 68 % surface hydrophobicity, 41 % intrinsic florescence spectrum, and 60 % random coil content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed smooth structures of the SSPI with molecular weights ranging from 12 kDa to 65 kDa. The increase of albumins content in the SSPI by ultrasound was highly correlated (r = 0.962; p < 0.01) with the protein solubility. Improving the physicochemical, functional, biochemical and structural properties of SSPI by ultrasound could contribute to its utilization as ingredient in food industry.

Abstract
Herein we propose an ecofriendly process for the biofabrication of AgNPs by applying fruit waste of Citrus limetta. The aqueous extracts from the peels of the fruit were used as green chelating and stabilizing agents. Structural, optical, vibrational, morphological, and magnetic properties were established using UV-Vis (ultraviolet visible spectroscopy), XRD (X-rays diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), ESR (electron spin resonance), and PPMS (physical property management system), while the thermal properties were established using TGA/DTG (thermal gravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry). XRD pattern revealed intense peaks with single-phase purity, while the Debye-Scherrer approximation revealed an average crystallite size of 33.18 nm. The W-H plot revealed the size of 55.2 nm and strain 2.68 × 10-4. FTIR spectra revealed the involvement of different functional groups and major IR vibrations were observed at 2329 cm-1, 2092 cm-1, 1794 cm-1, 1268 cm-1, and 754 cm-1. TGA/DTG revealed major weight loss events at 240 °C and 360 °C. SEM revealed spherical or quasi-spherical morphology, while EDS confirmed the presence of elemental silver. The M-H behavior for all measurement temperature shows diamagnetic behavior. Electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed a high proportion of free electrons. Furthermore, the pharmacognostic and nanomedicinal potential CL-AgNPs was established using multiple in vitro and in vivo bioassays. The in vivo wound healing assays in mice revealed excellent healing potential which were similar to positive control. The percent wound healing is reported to be 93% on the 14th day of incision after application of CL-AgNPs. Bioassays were performed to assess enzyme inhibition potential of the CL-AgNPs for Alzheimer disease and antidiabetic applications. The AChE and BChE potential of the CL-AgNPs was highest at 1000 µg mL-1, i.e., 92% and 56%, respectively. The α-glucosidase inhibition potential for the CL-AgNPs was higher as compared to the α-glucosidase, while the DPPH free radical scavenging was reported to be 70% to 11% at varying concentrations between 1000 and 62.5 µg mL-1. Overall, our results indicate that the waste fruit peels can be a sustainable and eco-friendly resource of synthesis of the multifunctional nanoparticles.

Abstract
In the present scenario marked by energy source shortages and escalating concerns regarding carbon dioxide emissions, there is a growing emphasis on the optimal utilization of biomass resources. Baijiu, as the Chinese national spirit, boasts remarkably high sales volumes annually. However, the production of baijiu yields various by-products, including solid residues (Jiuzao), liquid wastewater (Huangshui and waste alcohol), and gaseous waste. Recent years have witnessed dedicated research aimed at exploring the composition and potential applications of these by-products, seeking sustainable development and comprehensive resource utilization. This review systematically summarizes recent research, shedding light on both the baijiu brewing process and the bioactive compounds present baijiu production by-products (BPBPs). The primary focus lies in elucidating the potential extraction methods and applications of BPBPs, offering a practical approach to comprehensive utilization of by-products in functional food, medicine, cosmetic, and packaging fields. These applications not only contribute to enhancing production efficiency and mitigating environmental pollution, but also introduce innovative concepts for the sustainable advancement of associated industries. Future research avenues may include more in-depth compositional analysis, the development of utilization technologies, and the promotion of potential industrialization.

Abstract
Apple pomace, a byproduct of apple processing industry, possesses nutritional components which are of great interests for health aspects. Apple pomace is a good source of dietary fiber, minerals, carbohydrates, phenolic, and antioxidant compounds. These bioactive compounds can be extracted by different extraction techniques which have been comprehensively described in this review article. Furthermore, the incorporation of apple pomace as functional ingredients in different food products like bakery items, extrusion-based snacks, meat, dairy, and confectionary products to improve the commercial value and health benefits has been discussed briefly. This review article can be a helpful tool for industrialists, innovative researchers, and waste management authorities to manage the apple waste in an appropriate and sustainable way.

Abstract
In this study, the cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) derived from spaghetti squash peel (SSP) were prepared using a novel approach involving deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment coupled with ultrasonication. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that the number of hydrogen bonds influences the viscosity and density of DES systems, and experimental viscosity (ηexp) confirmed consistency with the computed viscosity (ηMD) trends. After DES pretreatment and ultrasonication, the cellulose content of ChCl/oxalic acid (ChCl/OA) CNF (35.63%) and ChCl/formic acid (ChCl/FA) (32.46%) is higher than ChCl/Urea CNF (28.27%). The widths of ChCl/OA CNF, ChCl/FA CNF, and ChCl/Urea CNF were 19.83, 11.34, and 18.27 nm, respectively, showing a network-like fiber distribution. Compared with SSP (29.76%) and non-ultrasonic samples, the crystallinity index of ChCl/OA CNF, ChCl/FA CNF, and ChCl/Urea CNF was improved by ultrasonication. The thermal decomposition residue of ChCl/OA CNF (25.54%), ChCl/FA CNF (18.54%), and ChCl/Urea CNF (23.62%) was lower than that of SSP (29.57%). These results demonstrate that CNFs can be prepared from SSP via DES pretreatment combined with ultrasonication. The lowest viscosity observed in the formic acid DES group (ηexp of 18 mPa·s), the ChCl/FA CNF exhibits excellent stability (Zeta potential of -37.6 mV), which can provide a promising prospect for utilization in biomass by-products and applications in the materials field.

Abstract
Agriculture waste has increased annually due to the global food demand and intensive animal production. Preventing environmental degradation requires fast and effective agricultural waste treatment. Aerobic digestion or composting uses agricultural wastes to create a stabilized and sterilized organic fertilizer and reduces chemical fertilizer input. Indeed, conventional composting technology requires a large surface area, a long fermentation period, significant malodorous emissions, inferior product quality, and little demand for poor end results. Conventional composting loses a lot of organic nitrogen and carbon. Thus, this comprehensive research examined sustainable and adaptable methods for improving agricultural waste composting efficiency. This review summarizes composting processes and examines how compost additives affect organic solid waste composting and product quality. Our findings indicate that additives have an impact on the composting process by influencing variables including temperature, pH, and moisture. Compost additive amendment could dramatically reduce gas emissions and mineral ion mobility. Composting additives can (1) improve the physicochemical composition of the compost mixture, (2) accelerate organic material disintegration and increase microbial activity, (3) reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia (NH3) emissions to reduce nitrogen (N) losses, and (4) retain compost nutrients to increase soil nutrient content, maturity, and phytotoxicity. This essay concluded with a brief summary of compost maturity, which is essential before using it as an organic fertilizer. This work will add to agricultural waste composting technology literature. To increase the sustainability of agricultural waste resource utilization, composting strategies must be locally optimized and involve the created amendments in a circular economy.

Abstract
The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the performance of two-phase anaerobic fermentation for caproic acid production from Chinese cabbage waste (CCW) were investigated. In the electron donor phase, yeast was inoculated to achieve efficient autopoietic ethanol, providing electron donors for the chain elongation process. Shorter HRT led to drastic fluctuations in microorganisms, thus resulting in lower acid yields at HRT of 6 days. At HRT of 10 days, the balanced collaboration of various key bacteria avoided the accumulation of intermediate by-products, and the caproic acid production reached 4660 mg COD/L, which was 119.5% and 154.8% higher than that at HRTs of 6 and 14 days, respectively. At HRT of 14 days, the low ethanol loading rate resulted in ethanol excessive-oxidation to acetic acid. Acetic acid accounted for 41.5% of the total product, while the selectivity of caproic acid was only 15.3%. The main contributor to the production process of caproic acid was Caproiciproducens, while the Ruminalococcaceae also played a role in the process. This study provided a theoretical basis for the efficient production of caproic acid through continuous fermentation with autopoietic electron donors.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables are one of the most consumed and processed commodities globally and comprise abundant phenolic compounds, one of the main nutraceuticals in the food industry. Comparably elevated rates of these compounds are found in waste (peel, seeds, leaf, stem, etc.) in the food processing industry. They are being investigated for their potential use in functional foods. However, phenolic compounds' low bioavailability limits their application, which can be approached by loading the phenolic compounds into an encapsulation system such as liposomal carriers. This review aims to elucidate the recent trend in extracting phenolic compounds from the waste stream and the means to load them in stable liposomes. Furthermore, the application of these liposomes with only natural extracts in food matrices is also presented. Many studies have indicated that liposomes can be a proper candidate for encapsulating and delivering phenolic compounds and as a means to increase their bioavailability.

Abstract
This paper explores the feasibility of functionalizing mango stones with iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MS-Fe3O4) by coprecipitation in batch adsorption processes. The synthesized material was characterized and applied in chloroquine (CQN) and sertraline hydrochloride (SER) removal from contaminated waters. The biosorbent was subjected to a regenerative study and treatment using a synthetic mixture of contaminants to evaluate its applicability in real effluents. The biosorbent was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy images, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and zeta potential to characterize its chemical and morphology properties. The techniques applied showed the effectiveness of the proposed modification. In the adsorption experiments, the optimal adsorbent dosage was 0.01 g for both contaminants. The pH strongly influenced the adsorption of the drugs on MS-Fe3O4, and the best results were obtained in the pH range of 5-6. Kinetic data showed a better fit to the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium time was achieved in 16 h for CQN and 4 h for SER. Isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorptive capacities of 49.42 and 64.79 mg g-1, respectively, for CQN and SER, at 318 K, demonstrating that the increase in temperature is a favorable factor, and the Sips model better describes the process. The thermodynamic parameters indicate an endothermic (ΔH° >0), spontaneous (ΔG° <0), and reversible (ΔS° >0) nature of the adsorption. This process is essentially governed by physical forces, such as hydrogen and π-π bonds. However, it is also valid to consider the presence of electrostatic forces due to the ionizing nature of CQN and SER. The MS-Fe3O4 biosorbent showed good performance when evaluated in a synthetic mixture of four contaminants, with an overall removal efficiency of approximately 86% and the regenerative capacity of three reusing cycles.

Abstract
The need for sustainable development has never been more urgent, as the world continues to struggle with environmental challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and dwindling natural resources. The use of renewable and recycled waste materials as a source of raw materials for biomaterials and tissue engineering is a promising avenue for sustainable development. Although tissue engineering has rapidly developed, the challenges associated with fulfilling the increasing demand for bone substitutes and implants remain unresolved, particularly as the global population ages. This review provides an overview of waste materials, such as eggshells, seashells, fish residues, and agricultural biomass, that can be transformed into biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. While the development of recycled metals is in its early stages, the use of probiotics and renewable polymers to improve the biofunctionalities of bone implants is highlighted. Despite the advances of additive manufacturing (AM), studies on AM waste-derived bone-substitutes are limited. It is foreseeable that AM technologies can provide a more sustainable alternative to manufacturing biomaterials and implants. The preliminary results of eggshell and seashell-derived calcium phosphate and rice husk ash-derived silica can likely pave the way for more advanced applications of AM waste-derived biomaterials for sustainably addressing several unmet clinical applications.

Abstract
With the gradual expansion of the protected vegetable planting area, dense planting stubbles and increasing labor cost, the treatment of vegetable residues has become an urgent problem to be solved. Soil bacterial community structure plays an important role in vegetable residue return and is susceptible to environmental changes. Therefore, understanding the influences of different soil water holding capacities on plant residue decomposition and soil bacterial communities is important for biodegradation. During the whole incubation period, the weight loss ratio of plant residue with 100% water holding capacity was 69.60 to 75.27%, which was significantly higher than that with 60% water holding capacity in clay and sandy soil, indicating that high water holding capacity promoted the decomposition of plant residue. The degradation of lignin and cellulose was also promoted within 14 days. Furthermore, with the increase in soil water holding capacity, the contents of NH4+ increased to 5.36 and 4.54 times the initial value in the clay and sandy soil, respectively. The increase in napA and nrfA resulted in the conversion of NO3- into NH4+. The increase in water holding capacity made the bacterial network structure more compact and changed the keystone bacteria. The increase in water holding capacity also increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes at the phylum level and Symbiobacterium, Clostridium at the genus level, which are all involved in lignin and cellulose degradation and might promote their degradation. Overall, these findings provide new insight into the effects of different soil water holding capacities on the degradation of plant residues in situ and the corresponding bacterial mechanisms.

Abstract
Solid-state fermentation (SSF) is a promising technology for producing value-added products from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). In this process, microorganisms are grown on cassava biomass without the presence of free-flowing liquid. Compared to other processing methods, SSF has several advantages, such as lower costs, reduced water usage, and higher product yields. By enhancing the content of bioactive compounds like antioxidants and phenolic compounds, SSF can also improve the nutritional value of cassava-based products. Various products, including enzymes, organic acids, and biofuels, have been produced using SSF of cassava. Additionally, SSF can help minimize waste generated during cassava processing by utilizing cassava waste as a substrate, which can reduce environmental pollution. The process has also been explored for the production of feed and food products such as tempeh and cassava flour. However, optimizing the process conditions, selecting suitable microbial strains, and developing cost-effective production processes are essential for the successful commercialization of SSF of cassava.

Abstract
The peel and core discarded from the processing of MD2 pineapple have the potential to be valorized. This study evaluated the functional and volatile compounds in the extracts of MD pineapple peel and core (MD2-PPC). The total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, sweetness index, and astringency index were 9.34 °Brix, 4.00, 0.74%, 12.84, and 0.08, respectively, for the peel and 12.00 °Brix, 3.96, 0.32%, 37.66, and 0.03, respectively, for the core. The fat and protein contents of the peel and core were found to be significantly different (p < 0.05). The total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC) were significantly higher in the peel. The peel also showed better antioxidant activity, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.63 mg/mL for DPPH free radical activity compared with the core. The TPC of different phenolic fractions from peel extract was highest in the glycosylated fraction, followed by the esterified, insoluble-bound, and free phenolic fractions. GC-MS analysis identified 38 compounds in the peel and 23 in the core. The primary volatile compounds were 2-furan carboxaldehyde, 5-(hydroxymethyl), and 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one (DDMP). The identification of phenolics and volatile compounds provides important insights into the valorization of (MD2-PPC) waste.

Abstract
Free sugars from fruit wastes were evaluated for the production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) in Paraburkholderia sacchari fed-batch bioreactor fermentations. Different initial sugar concentration, carbon to inorganic phosphorus (C/IP) ratio, IP addition during feeding and volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa) were evaluated to promote PHB production. The highest intracellular PHB accumulation (66.6%), PHB concentration (108.3 g/L), productivity (3.28 g/L/h) and yield (0.33 g/g) were achieved at 40 g/L initial sugars, C/IP 26.5, 202.6 h-1kLa value and 20% IP supplementation in the feeding solution. The effect of different cell's harvesting time on PHB properties showed no influence in weight average molecular weight and thermal properties. The harvest time influenced the tensile strength that was reduced from 28.7 MPa at 22 h to 13.3 MPa at 36 h. The elongation at break and Young's modulus were in the range 3.6-14.8% and 830-2000 MPa, respectively.

Abstract
Rising incidences of life-style disorders like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are a matter of concern coupled with escalated consumption of highly refined and high energy foods with low nutrient density. Food choices of consumers have witnessed significant changes globally with rising preference to highly processed palatable foods. Thus, it calls food scientists, researchers and nutritionists' attention towards developing and promoting pleasant-tasting yet healthy foods with added nutritional benefits. This review highlights selected underutilized and novel ingredients from different food sources and their by-products that are gaining popularity because of their nutrient density, that can be employed to improve the nutritional quality of conventionally available empty-calorie foods. It also emphasizes on the therapeutic benefits of foods developed from these understudied grains, nuts, processing by-products of grains, fruits- and vegetable-byproducts and nutraceutical starches. This review aims to draw attention of food scientists and industrialists towards popularizing the utilization of these unconventional, yet nutrient rich foods sources in improving the nutritional profile of the conventional foods lacking in nutrient density.

Abstract
A new sunflower oil-chitosan decorated fly ash (sunflower oil/FA-CSNPs) bionanocomposite film was synthesized using the extract of Litopenaeus vannamei (White shrimp) and evaluated as an antibacterial and immunomodulatory agent. Fly ash-chitosan nanoparticles were produced by using chitosan (CS) isolated from white shrimp extract, glacial acetic acid and sodium tripolyphosphate solution as cross-linkage. The ultrafine polymeric sunflower oil-CS film was fabricated by treating fly ash-chitosan nanoparticles with sunflower oil in glacial acetic acid under continuous stirring for 24 h. The nanostructure of the fabricated polymeric film was confirmed and characterized by different microscopic and spectroscopic approaches. The surface morphology of pre-synthesized bionanocomposite film was found to be homogenous, even and without cracks and pores. The crystallinity of formed bionanocomposite film was noticed at angles (2θ) at 12.65°, 15.21°, 19.04°, 23.26°, 34.82°, and 37.23° in the XRD spectrum. The fabricated film displayed excellent stability up to 380 ⁰C. The formed sunflower oil/FA-CSNPs bionanocomposite film showed promising antibacterial towards Bacillus subtilis with highest zone of inhibition of 34 mm and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with zone of inhibition of 28 nm. The as-synthesized bionanocomposite film exhibited highest cell viability effect (98.95%), followed by FA-CSNPs (83.25%) at 200 μg mL-1 concentrations. The bionanocomposite film exerted notable immunomodulatory effect by promoting phagocytosis and enhancing the production of cytokines (NO, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) in macrophage-derived RAW264.7 cell line.

Abstract
Harnessing fruit-vegetable waste (FVW) as a resource to produce hydrogen via dark fermentation (DF) embraces the circular economy concept. However, there is still a need to upgrade continuous FVW-DF bioprocessing to enhance hydrogen production rates (HPR). This study aims to investigate the influence of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the DF of FVW by mixed culture. A stirred tank reactor under continuous mesophilic conditions was operated for 47 days with HRT stepwise reductions from 24 to 6 h, leading to organic loading rates between 47 and 188 g volatile solids (VS)/L-d. The optimum HRT of 9 h resulted in an unprecedented HPR from FVW of 11.8 NL/L-d, with a hydrogen yield of 95.6 NmL/g VS fed. Based on an overarching inspection of hydrogen production in conjunction with organic acids and carbohydrates analyses, it was hypothesized that the high FVW-to-biohydrogen conversion rate achieved was powered by lactate metabolism.

Abstract
Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was applied to extract oil from blackberry (BB) seeds. The effect of UAE conditions on oil recovery and quality was investigated. Favorable experimental conditions (ultrasound intensity (UI), extraction temperature, and time) were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). A Box–Behnken design was used to predict optimized conditions for BB seed oil extraction. These conditions were as follows: 13.77 W/cm2 UI, 45 °C extraction temperature, and 15 min extraction time. The experimental value obtained for extraction efficiency under optimal conditions was 87 ± 0.34%, in good agreement with the optimized predicted value. UAE does not affect the oil composition and confers higher antioxidant values in BB seed oil in comparison with Soxhlet extraction.

Abstract
The reprocessing of vegetal-waste represents a new research field in order to design novel biomaterials for potential biomedical applications and in food industry. Here we obtained a biomaterial from Lupinus albus L. hull (LH) that was characterized micro-structurally by scanning electron microscopy and for its antimicrobial and scaffolding properties. A good adhesion and proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) seeded on LH scaffold were observed. Thanks to its high content of cellulose and beneficial phytochemical substances, LH and its derivatives can represent an available source for fabrication of biocompatible and bioactive scaffolds. Therefore, a reprocessing protocol of LH was optimized for producing a new LH bioplastic named BPLH. This new biomaterial was characterized by chemico-physical analyses. The water uptake, degradability and antimicrobial properties of BPLH were evaluated, as well as the mechanical properties. A good adhesion and proliferation of both fibroblasts and hMSCs on BPLH were observed over 2 weeks, and immunofluorescence analysis of hMSCs after 3 weeks indicates an initial commitment toward muscle differentiation. Our work represents a new approach toward the recovery and valorization of the vegetal waste showing the remarkable properties of LH and BPLH as cellular waste-based scaffold with potential applications in cell-based food field as well as in medicine for topical patches in wound healing and bedsores treatment.

Abstract
Bioconversion is a biological process by which organic materials are converted into products with higher biological and commercial value. During its larval stage the black soldier fly Hermetia illucens is extremely voracious and can feed on a wide variety of organic materials. To study the impact of different fruit byproducts on the insect's growth, final larval biomass, substrate reduction, bioconversion parameters, and larval nutritional composition, 10 000 black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) were reared on 7.0 kg of one of three substrates (strawberry, tangerine, or orange) or on a standard diet as a control. The results highlight that BSFL can successfully feed and grow on each of these diets, though their development time, growth rate, and final biomass were differently impacted by the substrates, with strawberry being the most suitable. The lipid and protein contents of BSFL were similar among larvae fed on different substrates; however, major differences were detected in ash, micronutrient, fiber, fatty acid, and amino acid contents. Overall, the results indicate that fruit waste management through the BSFL bioconversion process represents a commercially promising resource for regional and national agrifood companies. Our study offers new perspectives for sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial development by which fruit byproducts or waste might be disposed of or unconventionally enhanced to create secondary products of high biological and economic value, including BSFL biomass as animal feed or, in perspective, as alternative protein source for human nutrition.

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the influence of operational parameters on biohydrogen production from fruit-vegetable waste (FVW) via lactate-driven dark fermentation. Mesophilic batch fermentations were conducted at different pH (5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and non-controlled), total solids (TS) contents (5, 7, and 9%) and initial cell biomass concentrations (18, 180, and 1800 mg VSS/L). Higher hydrogen yields and rates were attained with more neutral pH values and low TS concentrations, whereas higher biomass densities enabled higher production rates and avoided wide variations in hydrogen production. A marked lactate accumulation (still at neutral pH) in the fermentation broth was closely associated with hydrogen inhibition. In contrast, enhanced hydrogen productions matched with much lower lactate accumulations (even it was negligible in some fermentations) along with the acetate and butyrate co-production but not with carbohydrates removal. At pH 7, 5% TS, and 1800 mg VSS/L, 49.5 NmL-H2/g VSfed and 976.4 NmL-H2/L-h were attained.

Abstract
In this study, spent malt rootlet-derived biochar was modified by a friendly eco-method using a low temperature (100 °C) and dilute acid, base, or water. The modification significantly enhanced the surface area from 100 to 308–428 m2g−1 and changed the morphology and the carbon phase. In addition, the mineral’s percentage and zero-point charge were significantly affected. Among the examined materials, the acid-treated biochar exhibited higher degradation of the drug losartan in the presence of persulfate. Interestingly, the biochar acted as an adsorbent at pH 3, whereas at pH = 5.6 and 10, the apparent kinetic constant’s ratio koxidation/kadsorption was 3.73 ± 0.03, demonstrating losartan oxidation. Scavenging experiments indirectly demonstrated that the role of the non-radical mechanism (singlet oxygen) was crucial; however, sulfate and hydroxyl radicals also significantly participated in the oxidation of losartan. Experiments in secondary effluent resulted in decreased efficiency in comparison to pure water; this is ascribed to the competition between the actual water matrix constituents and the target compound for the active biochar sites and reactive species.

Abstract
Fruit waste contains several bioactive components such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, and numerous other phytochemicals, including pigments. Furthermore, new financial opportunities are created by using fruit ‘leftovers’ as a basis for bioactivities that may serve as new foods or food ingredients, strengthening the circular economy’s properties. From a technical standpoint, organic phenolic substances have become more appealing to industry, in addition to their application as nutritional supplements or functional meals. Several extraction methods for recovering phenolic compounds from fruit waste have already been published, most of which involve using different organic solvents. However, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable techniques that result in phenolic-rich extracts with little ecological impact. Utilizing these new and advanced green extraction techniques will reduce the global crisis caused by fruit waste management. Using modern techniques, fruit residue is degraded to sub-zero scales, yielding bio-based commodities such as bioactive elements. This review highlights the most favorable and creative methods of separating bioactive materials from fruit residue. Extraction techniques based on environmentally friendly technologies such as bioreactors, enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and their combination are specifically covered.

Abstract
This investigation aimed to valorize grape marc (GM) in the formulation of cakes for ideal technological, nutritional and organoleptic properties. The GM (0–20%) was used for the partial substitution of wheat flour (40–50%) and sugar (40–50%). Total polyphenols in the cake samples, their post digestion, and bioaccessibility varied from 65.49–462.07; 13.34–608.62 mg GAE/g, and 23.42–315.47%, respectively. The values of the elastic modulus of the batter were higher than those of the viscous modulus, indicating the elastic behavior of the cakes. The hardness and springiness ranged from 2.20–4.22 N, and 0.85–0.98 mm, respectively. The results predicted by mixture design revealed that the samples including 50% wheat flour, 48.73% sugar, and 1.94% GM were the best formulation for the optimization of organoleptic properties. According to the results, GM can be used to develop cakes with a good nutritional composition as well as functional, sensory, and quality attributes at the industrial scale.

Abstract
Food is an essential commodity for the survival of any form of life on earth. Yet generation of plethora of food waste has significantly elevated the global concern for food scarcity, human and environment deterioration. Also, increasing use of polymers derived from petroleum hydrocarbons has elevated the concerns towards the depletion of this non-renewable resource. In this review, the use of waste food for the production of bio-polymers and their associated challenges has been thoroughly investigated using scientometric analysis. Various categories of food waste including fruit, vegetable, and oily waste can be employed for the production of different biopolymers including polyhydroxyalkanoates, starch, cellulose, collagen and others. The advances in the production of biopolymers through chemical, microbial or enzymatic process that increases the acceptability of these biopolymers has been reviewed. The comprehensive compiled information may assist researchers for addressing and solving the issues pertaining to food wastage and fossil fuel depletion.

Abstract
The demands for fruits and processed products have significantly increased following the surging human population growth and rising health awareness. However, an enormous amount of fruit waste is generated during their production life-cycle due to the inedible portion and perishable nature, which become a considerable burden to the environment. Embracing the concept of "circular economy", these fruit wastes represent sustainable and renewable resources and can be integrated into biorefinery platforms for valorization into a wide range of high-value products. To fully realize the potential of fruit waste in circular bioeconomy and provide insights on future commercial-scale applications, this review presented the recycling and utilization of fruit wastes in various applications, particularly focusing on pollutant bioremediation, renewable energy and biofuel production, biosynthesis of bioactive compounds and low-cost microbial growth media. Furthermore, the challenges of efficient valorization of fruit wastes were discussed and future prospects were proposed.

Abstract
Ensuring a sustainable supply of food for the world’s fast growing population is a major challenge in today’s economy, as modern lifestyle and increasing consumer concern with maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is an important challenge for the agricultural sector worldwide. This market niche for healthier products, especially fruits and vegetables, has increased their production, consequently resulting in increased amounts of agri-food surplus, waste, and loss (SWL) generated during crop production, transportation, storage, and processing. Although many of these materials are not utilized, negatively affecting the environmental, economic, and social segments, they are a rich source of valuable compounds that could be used for different purposes, thus preventing the losses of natural resources and boosting a circular economy. This review aimed to give insights on the efficient management of agri-food SWL, considering conventional and emerging recovery and reuse techniques. Particularly, we explored and summarized the chemical composition of three worldwide cultivated and consumed vegetables (carrots, broccoli and lettuce) and evaluate the potential of their residues as a sustainable alternative for extracting value-added ingredients for the development of new biodynamic products.

Abstract
Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) were synthesized using a simple, eco-friendly green synthesis approach in an alkaline medium from the extract of grapefruit peel waste. The pre-synthesized, nano-crystalline Al2O3 NPs were characterized by using spectroscopic (UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, and EDX) and microscopic (SEM and TEM) techniques. The formed Al2O3 NPs exhibited a pronounced absorption peak at 278 nm in the UV-vis spectrum. The average particle size of the as-prepared Al2O3 NPs was evaluated to be 57.34 nm, and the atomic percentages of O and Al were found to be 54.58 and 45.54, respectively. The fabricated Al2O3 NPs were evaluated for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. The Al2O3 NPs showed strong antioxidant potential towards all the four tested assays. The anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory potential of Al2O3 NPs was investigated by measuring the production of nitric oxide and superoxide anion (O2•-), as well as proinflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α, IL-6) and inhibition of nuclear factor kappa B (NF- κB). The results revealed that Al2O3 NPs inhibited the production of O2•- (99.4%) at 100 μg mL-1 concentrations and intracellular NO•- (55%), proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 (83.3%), and TNF-α (87.9%) at 50 μg mL-1 concentrations, respectively. Additionally, the Al2O3 NPs inhibited 41.8% of nuclear factor kappa B at 20 μg mL-1 concentrations. Overall, the outcomes of current research studies indicated that Al2O3 NPs possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties and could be used to treat chronic and acute anti-inflammatory conditions.

Abstract
Agro-industrial by-products of fruits have turned into an essential source of bioactive products. This study examined the effect of freeze-drying on apple pomace powder (APP) and pomegranate peel powder (PPP) and their utilization in functional yogurt development at different concentrations. Freeze-dried powders in functional yogurt were investigated by chemical profile and bioactive characterization of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity. The highest concentration of TPC (4.64) mg GAE/g, TFC (1.73 ± 0.00) CE mg/g, and antioxidant activity (83.87 ± 0.02) % was investigated in the yogurt sample T6, having the maximum amount of PPP in it, which was significantly higher compared to the treatments having APP. Yogurt samples were analyzed for their sensory attributes, which showed a decline with the increase in both APP and PPP concentrations in contrast by introducing the optimum levels of APP and PPP (3% or 6%); hence, no significant loss in sensory profile was found as compared to the control samples. ). In terms of the freeze-dried APP and PPP results, the APP samples had the most complete chemical composition, with the exception of fiber and ash concentration. Treatments of functional yogurt were prepared for their physicochemical profile, which demonstrated a straight proportionate relationship between the proportions of both powders in the meantime. Protein and fat levels were likely to decrease as both dry powder levels increased. Hence, apple pomace and pomegranate peel can be used after freeze-drying as a rich source of bioactive compounds in functional yogurt in the food industry.

Abstract
This article presents the application of a novel system for the treatment of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) using the combination of treatment by the application of the liquid fraction to an anaerobic hydrolytic bioreactor and a constructed wetland. The batch-fed anaerobic bioreactor (AB) had an average organic loading rate of 44 g COD/L-d and a hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 24 h for the degradation of the liquid fraction of the FVW with an average COD removal of 55%. Subsequently, the constructed wetlands (CWs) were fed a subsurface vertical flow of the effluent from the AB by stepwise concentration increments from 1 to 12 g COD/L and a HRT = 72 h until the limit conditions of the operation were identified. For the tropical ornamental species of the CWs in red volcanic gravel (RVG) and RVG + polyethylene (PE) supports, the monoculture of Hippeastrum rutilum and Spathiphyllum wallisii presented removals of COD, Tot-P, and TKN of 90%, 80%, and 85%, respectively. The polycultures with both species exceeded 90% effectiveness. At the end of both processes, a concentration of ~0.5 g COD/L was achieved, confirming that the use of these technologies together constitutes an efficient system for the treatment of the liquid fraction of FVW.

Abstract
Wine production annually generates an estimated 11 million metric tonnes of grape marc (GM) worldwide. The diversion of this organic waste away from landfill and towards its use in the generation of renewable energy has been investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of operational parameters relating to the treatment regime and inoculum source in the extraction of methane from GM under unmixed anaerobic conditions at 35 °C. The study entailed the recirculation of a previously acclimated sludge (120 days) as downstream inoculum, an increased loading volume (1.3 kg) and a low substrate-to-inoculum ratio (10:3 SIR). The results showed that an incorporation of accessible operational controls can effectively enhance cumulative methane yield (0.145 m3 CH4 kg−1 VS), corresponding to higher amounts of digestible organics converted. The calculated average volumetric methane productivity equalled 0.8802 L CH4 LWork−1 d−1 over 33.6 days whilst moderate pollutant removal (43.50% COD removal efficiency) was achieved. Molecular analyses identified Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phyla as core organisms for hydrolytic and fermentative stages in trophic relationships with terminal electron acceptors from the methane-producing Methanosarcina genus. Economic projections established that the cost-effective operational enhancements were sustainable for valorisation from grape marc by existing wineries and distilleries.
