Adsorption equilibrium and thermodynamics of anionic reactive dyes from aqueous solutions by using a new modified silica gel with 2,2′-(pentane-1,5-diylbis(oxy))dibenzaldehyde

Preparation of nanocellulose light porous material adsorbed with tannic acid and its application in fresh-keeping pad

This study fabricated nanocellulose lightweight porous material (TOCNF-G-LPM-TA) as absorbent fresh-keeping pad for meat products, using TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCNF) and gelatin as structural skeleton and tannic acid (TA) as antibacterial component of TOCNF lightweight porous material (TOCNF-G-LPM). The adsorption kinetics, capacity and mechanism of TOCNF-G-LPM in different initial concentrations of TA solutions were investigated, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of TOCNF-G-LPM-TA and its fresh-keeping effect on refrigerated pork at 4 ℃ were studied. Due to strong hydrogen bonding and porous structure, TOCNF-G-LPM exhibited excellent TA adsorption ability (230 mg/g) conforming with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. TA endowed TOCNF-G-LPM with good antioxidant and antibacterial activities. According to changes in appearance, pH and TVB-N values of pork during storage at 4 ℃, TOCNF-G-LPM-TA effectively extended the shelf life of refrigerated pork. This work provides a facile method for preparing nanocellulose based absorbent fresh-keeping pads.

Magnetic solid phase extraction of Sunitinib malate in urine samples assisted with mixed hemimicelle and spectrophotometric detection

The mixed hemimicelle-based solid phase extraction method using the coated sodium dodecyl sulfate by magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as adsorbent was developed for extraction and determination of Sunitinib malate in real samples prior to determination by UV-Visible spectrophotometry. For the characterization of synthesized nanoparticles, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy was used. The influences of different factors affecting the extraction efficiency of Sunitinib malate, including the pH, the adsorbent amount, the volume and eluent type, the amount of the surfactant, the ionic strength, extraction, and desorption time, were investigated. At the optimized conditions, a good linearity with correlation coefficients of 0.998 and 0.999 was obtained over the concentration ranges of 1-22 and 1-19 µg/mL for water and urine samples, in order. The good recoveries of 97% and 99% and also, the limits of detection equal with 0.9, and 0.8 µg/mL for water and urine samples were enhanced, respectively. These results demonstrate that mixed hemimicelle solid phase extraction is a fast, efficient, economical and selective sample preparation method for the extraction and determination of Sunitinib malate in different water and urine sample solutions.

A comprehensive review of anionic azo dyes adsorption on surface-functionalised silicas

Surface -functionalised silica networks are advanced adsorbents. They have been given much attention for treating wastewater using the adsorption technique due to the silanol reactivity, resulting in strong binding affinities towards many pollutants. This review discusses the removal of anionic azo dyes utilising various functional groups such as amines, surfactants, polymers, macrocyclic, and other chelating groups functionalised on silica's surface. This review also reveals the steadily increasing interest in surface-functionalised silicas as adsorbents, emphasising the scholarly advancements in this field as a platform for future research. For that, adsorption capacities with different experimental conditions have been compared. The possible adsorption mechanisms, rate-limiting step, and factors affecting the anionic azo dye adsorption process have been comprehensively discussed. This review discloses that adsorbent characteristics such as porosity and functional groups, besides structural properties of an anionic azo dye, significantly affect adsorption. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models, with a predominantly spontaneous and endothermic nature. Multiple interactions, including electrostatic interaction, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding, are observed between dyes and functionalised silicas, indicating the adsorption process's complexity. Regeneration and cost-economic analysis are also presented to provide a roadmap for sustainable improvements. Chemical and biological regeneration techniques restore > 80% of the spent functionalised silicas. There is a significant opportunity to improve their efficiencies and regenerability, resulting in surface-functionalised silicas being used commercially instead of only in the laboratory. Finally, future research has been proposed by identifying current research gaps, particularly concerning the application of functionalised silicas in wastewater treatment.

"Killing two birds with one stone": A fluorescent hybrid nanoparticle modified with BODIPY for efficiently detection and removal of toxic Cu (II) ion from aqueous solutions

In this paper, we successfully synthesized a fluorescent hybrid material (f-Silica gel) for the removal and recognition of cations. A Bodipy derivative was used as a source of fluorescent material. The characterization of Bodipy derivative and the modified surfaces were performed by some techniques like NMR, XRD, SEM, and FT-IR. The spectroscopic studies (complex stoichiometry, pH effect, response time) were carried out with fluorescence spectroscopy for the sensitive and selective recognition of Cu (II) ions. The LOD (limit of detection) was calculated as 4.63 μM and the most optimum response time was determined as 25 min. Moreover, the complex interaction between f-Silica gel and Cu (II) ions stables generally in the range of pH: 1-12. f-Silica gel can be also used as a solid support surface to remove Cu (II) ions from the wastewater. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Cu (II) on the f-Silica gel were determined with several parameters such as the amount of adsorbent, temperature, and pH. Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was performed for the adsorption of Cu (II) ions and the maximum capacity was found to be 19. 920 mg/g. The kinetic data ensured that the R² value was obtained as 0.9941 from the kinetic model (pseudo-second-order). Thus, it is very close to the desired value (1) and the value of q_e(expe) is very close to the value of q_e(calc). The thermodynamic results support the spontaneous, random, and endothermic adsorption process. All results indicated that the hybrid material can be used as both a sensor and an adsorbent for the detection and removal of Cu (II) ions in environmental processes.

Novel Mesoporous Organosilicas with Task Ionic Liquids: Properties and High Adsorption Performance for Pb(II)

Removal of toxic contaminants such as Pb(II) from waste solutions is environmentally requested. Therefore, in this paper, for potential novel sorbents, mesoporous ionic liquid-functionalized silicas were synthesized and tested for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The successful synthesis of the adsorbents was proved by nuclear magnetic resonance (²⁹Si and ¹³C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and elemental analysis. The structural and textural properties were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and low-temperature N₂ sorption, and the result showed that the applied procedure made it possible to obtain highly ordered particles with a two-dimensional mesostructure. The effects of several parameters including initial pH, contact time, adsorption temperature, and Pb(II) concentration were studied in detail and were discussed to evaluate the adsorption properties of the fabricated materials towards Pb(II). The obtained results confirmed a very high potential of the sorbents; however, the adsorption properties depend on the structure and amounts of the functional group onto fabricated materials. The sample ILS-Ox3-40 showed fast kinetics (equilibrium reached within 10 min) and capacity of 172 mg/g, and that makes it a promising sorbent for the cleanup of water contaminated by lead. It was also indicated that, regardless on structure of the tested materials, the Pb(II) removal was spontaneous and exothermic. The fabricated mesoporous silicas exhibited that they were easy to regenerate and had excellent reusability.

Silica Gel Impregnated by Deep Eutectic Solvents for Adsorptive Removal of BTEX from Gas Streams

The paper presents the preparation of new adsorbents based on silica gel (SiO₂) impregnated with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to increase benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene (BTEX) adsorption efficiency from gas streams. The DESs were synthesized by means of choline chloride, tetrapropylammonium bromide, levulinic acid, lactic acid, and phenol. The physico-chemical properties of new sorbent materials, including surface morphology and structures, as well as porosity, were studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The effect of DESs type, flow rate, and initial concentration of BTEX were also investigated followed by regeneration and reusability of adsorbents. The results indicate that SiO₂ impregnated with tetrapropylammonium bromide and lactic acid in a 1:2 molar ratio have great potential for the removal of BTEX from gas streams. Its adsorption capacity was higher than the pure SiO₂ and other developed SiO₂-DES adsorbents. This result can be explained by the specific interaction between DESs and BTEX, i.e., hydrogen bonds interaction.

Degradation of Anthraquinone Dyes from Effluents: A Review Focusing on Enzymatic Dye Degradation with Industrial Potential

Up to 84 000 tons of dye can be lost in water, and 90 million tons of water are attributed annually to dye production and their application, mainly in the textile and leather industry, making the dyestuff industry responsible for up to 20% of the industrial water pollution. The majority of dyes industrially used today are aromatic compounds with complex, reinforced structures, with anthraquinone dyes being the second largest produced in terms of volume. Despite the progress on decolorization and degradation of azo dyes, very little attention has been given to anthraquinone dyes. Anthraquinone dyes pose a serious environmental problem as their reinforced structure makes them difficult to degrade naturally. Existing methods of decolorization might be effective but are neither efficient nor practical due to extended time, space, and cost requirements. Attention should be given to the emerging routes for dye decolorization via the enzymatic action of oxidoreductases, which have already a strong presence in various other bioremediation applications. This review will discusses the presence of anthraquinone dyes in the effluents and ways for their remediation from dyehouse effluents, focusing on enzymatic processes.

Synthesis of mesoporous triple-metal nanosorbent from layered double hydroxide as an efficient new sorbent for removal of dye from water and wastewater

In this study, co-precipitation synthesis of the mesoporous triple-metal nanosorbent from Fe, Cu, Ni layered double hydroxide (FeCuNi-LDH), on the basis of the data obtained from the TG analysis was carried out. The FTIR spectroscopy and XRD results confirm the formation of CuO, NiO and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles, while the EDX analysis does not show significant variations on the surface in elemental composition. BET analysis shows that FeCuNi-280 (FeCuNi-LDH calcinated at 280 °C) with mesoporous structure, has larger surface area compared to FeCuNi-LDH and FeCuNi-550 (FeCuNi-LDH calcinated at 550 °C). The value of pH_PZC of FeCuNi-280 is found to be 8.66. Obtained FeCuNi-280 material showed the ability for efficient removal of dye Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) from water, with a very high sorption capacity of 480.79 mg/g at optimal conditions: the sorbent dose of 0.6 g/dm³, stirring speed of 280 rpm and pH 2. The kinetics results of the sorption process were well fitted by pseudo-second order and Chrastil model, and the sorption isotherm was well described by Sips, Langmuir and Brouers-Sotolongo model. FeCuNi-280 was easily regenerated with aqueous solution of NaOH, and reutilization was successfully done in five sorption cycles. The present study show that easy-to-prepare, relatively inexpensive nanosorbent FeCuNi-280 is among the best sorbents for the removal of RB19 dye from water solution and wastewater from textile industry in wide range of pH.

Enhanced adsorption performance of methylene blue from aqueous solutions onto modified adsorbents prepared from sewage sludge

In the present work, an attractive and creative adsorbent derived from sewage sludge was freshly fabricated via pyrolysis technology, followed by modification for improving the absorptive ability. First, the (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ modified pyrolytic sludge (MS_AP) was selected from 19 modified pyrolytic sludges for the highest removal efficiency and adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB). Then, the adsorption performance for MB of MS_AP was compared systematically with the pristine adsorbent (MS_DW) by batch adsorption experiments. The main conclusions were that the adsorption process was better fitted with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) of MS_AP was observed to be 149.05 mg g^-1. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics data showed a good fit with the pseudo second order model; when the addition of MS_AP was 1.0 g·L^-1, the rate constant was 0.05 g·mg^-1·min^-1, which was far greater than that of the other modified adsorbents.
