Preparation of polypyrrole-coated magnetic particles for micro solid-phase extraction of phthalates in water by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis

Magnetic Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer for the Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction of Nitrophenols from Environmental Water Samples

A fast and simple dispersive solid phase extraction method is described for nitrophenols determination in water samples by using gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorous detector. Firstly, the Poly(amidoamine) grafted Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized in different generations by successive addition of butyl acrylate and ethylenediamine. After characterization, the prepared dendrimer was utilized as an adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction of 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, and 4-nitrophenol to benefit large number of surface amine interaction sites. The effects of the different parameters influencing the sample preparation efficiency were investigated. The proposed method showed linearity in the ranges of 0.04-700 and 0.05-700 µg/dm3 for nitrophenols. The obtained limits of detection and quantification under optimized conditions were 0.01-0.02 and 0.04-0.05 µg/dm3, respectively. The relative standard deviations (n = 5) were less than 3.8% (at 10 µg/dm3). Moreover, the calculated enrichment factors were above 200. In addition, the relative recoveries for a spiked river water sample were satisfactory.

A new core–shell magnetic mesoporous surface molecularly imprinted composite and its application as an MSPE sorbent for determination of phthalate esters

In this study, a new core–shell magnetic mesoporous surface molecularly imprinted polymer (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@mSiO₂-MIPs) which has specific adsorption and rapid adsorption rate for phthalate esters (PAEs) was prepared by a convenient method. Based on this composite as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) material, a rapid, efficient and sensitive matrix dispersion magnetic solid-phase extraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method (DMSPE-GC/MS) was developed for the determination of PAEs in multiple liquid samples. It is the first time that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@mSiO₂-MIPs have been prepared by bonding amino groups on the surface of a double layer silicon substrate with diisononyl phthalate (DINP) as virtual template and 3-(2-aminoethyl)-aminopropyl trimethoxymethylsilane (TSD) as functional monomer. FT-IR, TEM, EDS, SEM, XRD, BET and VSM were used to characterize the composite. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@mSiO₂-MIPs showed that it possessed fast adsorption rates (approximately 5 min to reach equilibrium), high adsorption capacities (523.9 mg g⁻¹) and good recognition of PAEs. The real samples were preconcentrated by Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@mSiO₂-MIPs, under the optimum DMSPE-GC/MS conditions. Validation experiments showed that the method presented good linearity (R² > 0.9971), satisfactory precision (RSD < 5.7%) and high recovery (92.1–105.8%), and the limits of detection ranged from 1.17 ng L⁻¹ to 3.03 ng L⁻¹. The results indicated that the novel method had good sensitivity, high efficiency and wide sample application and was suitable for the determination of PAEs in liquid drink samples such as water, alcohol, beverages and so on.

Fast Determination of Carbamates in Environmental Water Based on Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Adsorbent

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were prepared with isoprocarb as template molecule and applied to extraction of carbamates pesticides in different water samples. This method based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (SPE) avoided the time-consuming column-passing process of loading large volume samples in conventional SPE. In the study, only 0.1 g MMIPs could be used to obtain satisfactory recoveries, due to the high-surface area and excellent adsorption capacity of these nano-magnetic adsorbents. Owing to the excellent selectivity of MMIPs, in high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, the matrix effects of this technique were obviously lower than the conventional SPE method. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limits of carbamates were in the range of 2.7-11.7 ng L-1. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day were 2.5-7.4% and 3.6-8.4%, respectively. At all the spiked level, the recoveries of four analyzed carbamates in environmental water samples were in the range of 74.2-94.2%. The significant positive results were achieved in the proposed method for the determination of four carbamates in water samples from different lakes and rivers. In the three samples we tested, the carbaryl was found in the lake water obtained from Yitong River, and the content was 2.4 ng L-1.

[Research progress of solid phase extraction materials in the application of metal ion pretreatment]

Monitoring of trace heavy metal pollutants released during industrial and agricultural processes is essential because of their widespread distribution in the environment and health hazards. Several techniques, including inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), electrothermal atomic absorption (ETAAS), and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), have been proposed for the determination of heavy metals in serum, plasma, whole blood, and food. All these techniques have earned robust recognition in the field of trace heavy metals and have many advantages such as multi-elemental analysis capability, large dynamic linear range, low detection limits, and high productivity. Nevertheless, most of the recommended techniques require digestion of the sample and extraction with an organic solvent for isolation of the metal ion from the sample solution prior to analysis. Despite improvements in the performance of modern analytical instruments, the direct determination of heavy metal ions in real samples is difficult because of their low concentration levels and matrix interference. Thus, extraction and clean-up steps are required for pre-concentration of the analyte, so that detection and elimination of the interfering matrix component are possible. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is one of the popular metal ion pretreatment methods. The advantages of SPE include easy cartridge/column regeneration, high analytical frequency, and high preconcentration factors for sorbents with high adsorption capacities. On the other hand, when the analytes are extracted from a complex matrix such as serum and meat samples, large amounts of proteins from the samples can be retained on the sorbent surface, obstructing the binding sites on the sorbent and leading to poor precision and accuracy. The key to metal ion detection is the development of new SPE materials with high efficiency and enrichment factors as well as an effective pretreatment technology. Nanomaterials such as restricted-access carbon nanotubes, nanoadsorbents, nanoparticle carriers, and magnetic nanoparticles have shown great promise in advancing biomedical and environmental analysis because of the unique properties originating from their ultrafine dimensions. Nanomaterials can provide large specific surface areas and tunable functional groups to facilitate metal ion absorption. They could also possess superior optical properties and allow for high sensitivity in simple fluorescent or colorimetric detection methods. Owing to their excellent mechanical and chemical stability, polymer materials have been of great interest as adsorbents for the SPE of metal ions from solution. Moreover, a designed polymeric material can show triple functionality such as physical adsorption, chelate formation, and ion exchange for the target metal ions. A dual-functional nanomaterial-DNAzyme platform can simultaneously allow for the sensitive detection and effective removal of heavy metal ions in water. Thus, this platform can serve as a simple, cost-effective tool for rapid and accurate metal quantification in the determination of human metal exposure and inspection of environmental contamination. Furthermore, the new photocaged chelator can uncage and release the combined metal ions into an aqueous solution that is free of the other components of the matrix. In this manner, we can develop diagnostic tests for metal ions that are often difficult to detect using other methods. In this paper, the characteristics of new SPE materials, including nanomaterials, polymer materials, and functional materials as well as advances in their applications to the preparation of complex samples are summarized, and the direction for future development is proposed.

Rapid determination of folic acid and riboflavin in urine by polypyrrole magnetic solid-phase extractant combined ultra-performance liquid chromatography

Determination of folic acid and riboflavin in biological samples is difficult due to their high polarity, low concentration, chemical instability, and complex matrix. In this study, the polypyrrole-coated magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@PPy) was synthesized innovatively with the assistance of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. To evaluate the adsorption mechanism and the feasibility of synthesized Fe₃O₄@PPy as an adsorbent, the adsorption capacities, kinetics and thermodynamics of folic acid and riboflavin were investigated systemically. Furthermore, in light of the chemical instability of folic acid and riboflavin a method for rapid extraction and detection of them from human urine within 10 min was developed successfully by combining magnetic solid phase extraction with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (MSPE/UPLC). The adsorption parameters including sorbent amount, pH value, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time were studied. Under optimum conditions, the performance of the established determination method was validated with the linearly dependent coefficients (>0.9995), the limits of detection (0.02-0.05 µg/mL), the limits of quantification (0.07-0.18 µg/mL), and the recoveries (92.2-105.1%, with relative standard deviation < 3.3%). The rapid extraction and detection of folic acid and riboflavin from real urine samples were achieved subsequently. The present study suggests that the developed method exhibits a promising application in the analysis of free folic acid and riboflavin in human urine samples, which can provide a reference for the clinical drug monitoring and treatment.

Preparation and Characterization of Magnetic Polypyrrole Composite Microspheres Decorated with Copper (II) As A Sensing Platform for Electrochemical Detection of Carbamazepine

With a facile solvothermal technique, synthesis and application of Fe₃O₄@PPy–Cu^IIcomposite microspheres in the carbon ionic liquid matrix have been reported as highly sensitive sensors for voltammetric determination of Carbamazepine (CBZ). The morphology, crystal phase, and structure of synthesized nanocomposite were confirmed by routine methods, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier translation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Under the optimized conditions, differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) peak current was proportional to the CBZ concentration in the range of 0.05 to 25 μM with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 32 nM. The storage stability of the modified electrode was also investigated which shows that the current responses remain about 95.2% of their initial values, indicating the appreciable storage stability of this sensor.The proposed electrode displayed excellent repeatability and it was satisfactorily used for determination of CBZ in real samples (urine, and serum samples) with high recovery.

Sustainable polypyrrole-based magnetic-microextraction of phthalates from jellies and apple-based beverages prior to tandem mass spectrometry analysis

Synthesised polypyrrole-coated Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully characterised and applied as sorbent for the magnetic-micro-dispersive solid-phase extraction of eleven phthalic acid esters from jelly and apple-based beverage matrices widely consumed by the population and, especially, by children. Sorbent was synthesised through chemical coprecipitation and subsequently characterised by different techniques. The influence of several parameters on the extraction efficiency was exhaustively evaluated using a step-by-step strategy. The separation and quantification of the selected phthalates were performed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The validation of the methodology was carried out for jellies and apple-based beverages, employing dihexyl phthalate-3,4,5,6-d₄ as the surrogate standard. Relative recovery values were in the range 70-114% for both matrices and relative standard deviations below 20% were obtained. The limits of quantification of the method were found in the range 0.147-0.416 µg/L. Feasibility of the developed methodology was proved by the analysis of commercialised jelly and apple-based beverage products.

Performance of a novel magnetic solid-phase-extraction microsphere and its application in the detection of organic micropollutants in the Huai River, China

Solid phase extraction has been increasingly applied for the detection of organic micropollutants (OMPs). However, time-consuming and high-cost disadvantages also limit the widespread use of this method, especially for the extraction of large-volume field water samples. In this study, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method based on the magnetic microsphere (M150) solid-phase-extraction (MSPE) was established to investigate the OMPs in source water throughout the whole Huai River. In brief, the results demonstrated that the extraction efficiency of the M150 was superior to that of C₁₈ and HLB for the selected OMPs, including species of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), phthalate esters (PAEs) and nitrobenzenes (NBs), and the method detection limits of M150 for these OMPs were comparable to those of C₁₈ and HLB. The optimized conditions of extraction and elution were the 100 mg/L dosages of microspheres, extraction time of 60 min and pH of 2, and the eluent with a similar polarity, hydrophobicity and molecular structure to the OMPs rendered higher elution efficiencies. A total of 21 types of OMPs affiliating to PAHs, OCPs, PAEs and NBs were detected by the established method, with the total concentrations of 505-2310 ng/L in source water of the Huai River. Spatial differences of the OMPs were also observed, demonstrating the link between pollutant profiles and geographical locations. This study provides an alternative to enrich OMPs in filed water samples, and it reveals pollutant profiles of source water throughout the whole Huai River.

Determination of microcystins in environmental water samples with ionic liquid magnetic graphene

Microcystins is a class of monocyclic of heptapeptides with many different isomerides. It has become potential hazardous material in water environment for its toxic, distribution and stability. This project worked on a method for determination of trace microcystin (MC-LR and MC-RR) in environmental waters. The ionic liquid magnetic graphene (IL@MG) was prepared and applied to the concentration and determination of microcystins, based on magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE), and coupled with ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The ionic liquid magnetic graphene was prepared by coprecipitatial synthesis and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), specific surface area (BET), pore size distribution (BJH) and magnetic hysteresis loop. The experimental parameters of magnetic solid phase extraction, including amount of IL@MG, pH, extraction time and elution solvent were investigated by a univariate method and orthogonal screening. The method showed good linearity in the range of 0.01-10.0 g/L and 0.005-10.0 μg/L for MC-LR and MC-RR, when the pH of water samples was 4.00 and 10.0 mg adsorbents were used to extract targets for 18 min. The lowest detection limit was 0.414 ng/L and 0.216 ng/L for MC-LR and MC-RR respectively. The recoveries of the microcystins were in the range of 83.6-100.9%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 7.59%. The trace amount of MC-LR (0.020 μg/L) and MC-RR (0.003 μg/L and 0.021 μg/L) was detected in actural water samples. Attributed to its simple operator, low detection limit and high sensitivity, this method could be used for the detection of trace microcystins in water samples.

Efficient drug delivery of β-estradiol encapsulated in Zn-metal-organic framework nanostructures by microwave-assisted coprecipitation method

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are structures made up of inorganic nodes, which can be either single ions or clusters of ions and organic linkers. This study reports on a novel processing route for producing β-estradiol encapsulated in Zn-MOF nanocomposites by microwave-assisted coprecipitation as a facile and fast method. Zn-MOF nanocomposites were synthesized with the aid of Zn(OAc)₂⋅2H₂O and 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid ammonium as an organic ligand. Furthermore, we studied encapsulated β-estradiol which is one of the most important classes of estrogenic compounds that are used in the treatment of prostate cancer and breast cancer. The effects of β-estradiol concentration and microwave irradiation on the morphology, particle size, distribution, and in vitro photoluminescence spectroscopy experiments of β-estradiol entrapped in Zn-MOF nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller spectroscopy. These nanostructures can be a good option for thawing hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs over time. Zn-MOF nanocomposites with high porosity, total pore volume (0.04665 cm³g⁻¹), and nanostructures have provided the platform to load β-estradiol such as low soluble drugs. Maximum of drug release was about 82% at pH 8.9 after 8 h.

Method development for determination of migrated phthalate acid esters from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging into traditional Iranian drinking beverage (Doogh) samples: a novel approach of MSPE-GC/MS technique

In the current study, a novel magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) technique combined with a gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) was developed to determine the phthalate ester content of bottled Doogh samples. Doogh is a yogurt-based drinking beverage, which is frequently consumed in Middle East and Balkans. It is produced by stirring yogurt in Chern separation machine and consists of substances such as water, yogurt, and salt in addition to aqueous extracts of native herbs. The magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Fe₃O₄) were used as adsorbents of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) due to a superior adsorption capability of hydrophobic compounds. In this context, the quantity of the extractable migrated phthalate esters (dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-N-octyl phthalate (DNOP), and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into Doogh samples was measured. The correlation between the concentration of migrated PAEs and some factors such as the type of Doogh (gaseous and without gas), difference in brand (five brands), volume (1500 and 300 mL), and the storage time also was investigated. The migration level into Doogh samples was increased by incorporating of gas as well as increasing the volume of PET bottles. Also, with elaborating of storage time, the migration of some phthalates such as DEHP (the mean from 2419.85 ng L^-1 in the first week to 2716.15 ng L^-1 in the second month), DEP, and total phthalate was increased. However, no significant difference in concentrations of migrated phthalate esters among different examined brands was noted. Finally, the concentration of migrated PAEs from bottle into all the examined Doogh samples was below the defined standards by EPA; 6 μg/L for DEHP in drinking water. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Use of phenyl/tetrazolyl-functionalized magnetic microspheres and stable isotope labeled internal standards for significant reduction of matrix effect in determination of nine fluoroquinolones by liquid chromatography-quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry

In this study, the strategy of unique adsorbent combined with isotope labeled internal standards was used to significantly reduce the matrix effect for the enrichment and analysis of nine fluoroquinolones in a complex sample by liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ_LIT-MS/MS). The adsorbent was prepared conveniently by functionalizing Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ microspheres with phenyl and tetrazolyl groups, which could adsorb fluoroquinolones selectively via hydrophobic, electrostatic, and π-π interactions. The established magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method as well as using stable isotope labeled internal standards in the next MS/MS detection was able to reduce the matrix effect significantly. In the process of LC-QqQ_LIT-MS/MS analysis, the precursor and product ions of the analytes were monitored quantitatively and qualitatively on a QTrap system equipped simultaneously with the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) and enhanced product ion (EPI) scan. Subsequently, the enrichment method combined with LC-QqQ_LIT-MS/MS demonstrated good analytical features in terms of linearity (7.5-100.0 ng mL^-1, r > 0.9960), satisfactory recoveries (88.6%-118.3%) with RSDs < 12.0%, LODs = 0.5 μg kg^-1 and LOQs = 1.5 μg kg^-1 for all tested analytes. Finally, the developed MSPE-LC-QqQ_LIT-MS/MS method had been successfully applied to real pork samples for food-safety risk monitoring in Ningxia Province, China. Magnetic Solid-phase Extraction with Fe₃O₄/Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Modified by Deep Eutectic Solvents and Ionic Liquids for the Rapid Purification of Alkaloid Isomers (Theobromine and Theophylline) from Green Tea

Different kinds of deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on choline chloride (ChCl) and ionic liquids (ILs) based on 1-methylimidazole were used to modify Fe3O4/molecularly imprinted polymers (Fe3O4/MIPs), and the resulting materials were applied for the rapid purification of alkaloid isomers (theobromine and theophylline) from green tea with magnetic solid-phase extraction (M-SPE). The M-SPE procedure was optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) to analyze the maximum conditions. The materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FI-IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Compared to the ILs-Fe3O4/MIPs, the DESs-Fe3O4/MIPs were developed for the stronger recognition and higher recoveries of the isomers (theophylline and theobromine) from green tea, particularly DES-7-Fe3O4/MIPs. With RSM, the optimal recovery condition for theobromine and theophylline in the M-SPE were observed with ratio of methanol (80%) as the washing solution, methanol/acetic acid (HAc) (8:2) as the eluent at pH 3, and an eluent volume of 4 mL. The practical recoveries of theobromine and theophylline in green tea were 92.27% and 87.51%, respectively, with a corresponding actual extraction amount of 4.87 mg•g-1 and 5.07 mg•g-1. Overall, the proposed approach with the high affinity of Fe3O4/MIPs might offer a novel method for the purification of complex isomer samples.

Polythiophene-Chitosan Magnetic Nanocomposite as a Highly Efficient Medium for Isolation of Fluoxetine from Aqueous and Biological Samples

Polythiophene/chitosan magnetic nanocomposite as an adsorbent of magnetic solid phase extraction was proposed for the isolation of fluoxetine in aqueous and biological samples prior to fluorescence detection at 246 nm. The synthesized nanoparticles, chitosan and polythiophene magnetic nanocomposite, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR, TGA, and EDAX. The separation of the target analyte from the aqueous solution containing the fluoxetine and polythiophene/chitosan magnetic nanocomposite was simply achieved by applying external magnetic field. The main factors affecting the extraction efficiency including desorption conditions, extraction time, ionic strength, and sample solution pH were optimized. The optimum extraction conditions were obtained as 10 min for extraction time, 25 mg for sorbent amount, 50 mL for initial sample volume, methanol as desorption solvent, 1.5 mL for desorption solvent volume, 3 min for desorption time, and being without salt addition. Under the optimum conditions, good linearity was obtained within the range of 15-1000 μg L(-1) for fluoxetine, with correlation coefficients 0.9994. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to the determination of fluoxetine in urine and human blood plasma samples. Compared with other methods, the current method is characterized with highly easy, fast separation and low detection limits.
