Ion chromatographic separation and quantitation of alkyl methylamines and ethylamines in atmospheric gas and particulate matter using preconcentration and suppressed conductivity detection

Measurement of atmospheric amines and aminoamides by column adsorption/extraction and hydrophilic liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry

Sampling and chromatography-mass spectrometry methods were investigated to measure atmospheric amines and aminoamides. Amines and their amide derivatives play significant roles in new particle formation (NPF) in the atmosphere, especially diamines and aminoamides have higher NPF potentials compared to monoamines. For amine sampling, silica gel tube collection and formic acid extraction gave good overall recoveries (>93 ± 8%) for mono-, di-, tri-, tetramines, and aminoamides. Two chromatography methods were subjected to analyze the extracted amines. One involved direct analysis using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with carboxyl or diol group functioned separation column (carboxyl-HILIC or diol-HILIC), and the other utilized derivatization with 4-(N,N-dimethylaminosulfonyl)-7-fluoro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (DBD-F) and subsequent reversed-phase chromatography (HPLC). Separated amines were detected by electrospray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry in both cases. DBD-F-HPLC method provided good sensitivity for mono- and all polyamines (limit of detection (LOD) < 4.6 nM, relative standard deviation (RSD) for 100 nM < 9.2%). However, aminoamides could not be detected by DBD-F-HPLC. Carboxyl-HILIC provided good sensitivities for mono- and diamines and aminoamides (LOD < 1.6 nM, RSD < 4.8%). Forest air measurement was performed and data obtained by carboxyl-HILIC and DBD-F-HPLC showed good agreement for 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine) and 1,5-diaminopentane (cadaverine) (R2 = 0.9215-0.9739, n = 7-14). Carboxyl-HILIC method was the best for the amine analysis, and combination with silica gel tube sampling provides atmospheric monitoring available. The developed method can be used not only to study atmospheric chemistry of diamines and aminoamides but also to analyze flavor/odor of foods, flowers and wastes.

Suppressor and calibration standard limitations in cation chromatography of ammonium and 10 alkylamines in atmospheric samples

Ammonia (NH3) and alkylamines are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and have been suggested to play important global roles through new particle formation and aerosol growth. In this work, we optimized an ion-chromatographic (IC) method to separate and quantify the ten most abundant atmospheric alkylamines with high selectivity and separation efficiency, using 4 μm packed columns and resin-based suppressors, alongside stabilizing amine standards. Modern resin suppressors operating on a gradient elution program affected the linear response of this IC technique. Calibration statistical analyses found a loss of analytes in these cation-exchange devices. Suppressor operational longevity was optimized by using a stepped current and an external water supply, which improved precision, accuracy, and LODs compared to other suppression modes. When this new method was applied to real samples, amines were found ubiquitously in size-resolved marine aerosol samples; monopropylamine, isomonopropylamine, and monobutylamine were detected and quantified, which have not been reported before. The molar ratio of the sum of aminium to ammonium ranged from 0.02 to 0.2, showcasing the application of the developed method towards studying the diversity and importance of alkylamines in coastal marine particle composition. The new analytical method also found NH3 present in a suite of new homes with a mean mixing ratio of 25 ± 15 ppbv; a common level reached between homes across the study during the first year of occupation which can then be transported outdoors.

Emerging investigator series: an instrument to measure and speciate the total reactive nitrogen budget indoors: description and field measurements

Reactive nitrogen species (N_r), defined here as all N-containing compounds except N₂ and N₂O, have been shown to be important drivers for indoor air quality. Key N_r species include NO_x (NO + NO₂), HONO and NH₃, which are known to have detrimental health effects. In addition, other N_r species that are not traditionally measured may be important chemical actors for indoor transformations (e.g. amines). Cooking and cleaning are significant sources of N_r, whose emission will vary depending on the type of activity and materials used. Here we present a novel instrument that measures the total gas-phase reactive nitrogen (tN_r) budget and key species NO_x, HONO, and NH₃ to demonstrate its suitability for indoor air quality applications. The tN_r levels were measured using a custom-built heated platinum (Pt) catalytic furnace to convert all N_r species to NO_x, called the tN_r oven. The measurement approach was validated through a series of control experiments, such that quantitative measurement and speciation of the total N_r budget are demonstrated. The optimum operating conditions of the tN_r oven were found to be 800 °C with a sampling flow rate of 630 cubic centimetres per minute (ccm). Oxidized nitrogen species are known to be quantitatively converted under these conditions. Here, the efficiency of the tN_r oven to convert reduced N_r species to NO_x was found to reach a maximum at 800 °C, with 103 ± 13% conversion for NH₃ and 79-106% for selected relevant amines. The observed variability in the conversion efficiency of reduced N_r species demonstrates the importance of catalyst temperature characterization for the tN_r oven. The instrument was deployed successfully in a commercial kitchen, a complex indoor environment with periods of rapidly changing levels, and shown to be able to reliably measure the tN_r budget during periods of longer-lived oscillations (>20 min), typical of indoor spaces. The measured NO_x, HONO and basic N_r (NH₃ and amines) were unable to account for all the measured tN_r, pointing to a substantial missing fraction (on average 18%) in the kitchen. Overall, the tN_r instrument will allow for detailed survey(s) of the key gaseous N_r species across multiple locations and may also identify missing N_r fractions, making this platform capable of stimulating more in-depth analysis in indoor atmospheres.

Elevated levels of chloramines and chlorine detected near an indoor sports complex

Chloramines (NH₂Cl, NHCl₂, and NCl₃) are toxic compounds that can be created during the use of bleach-based disinfectants that contain hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and the hypochlorite ion (OCl^-) as their active ingredients. Chloramines can then readily transfer from the aqueous-phase to the gas-phase. Atmospheric chemical ionization mass spectrometry using iodide adduct chemistry (I-CIMS) made observations across two periods (2014 and 2016) at an urban background site on the University of Leicester campus (Leicester, UK). Both monochloramine (NH₂Cl) and molecular chlorine (Cl₂) were detected and positively identified from calibrated mass spectra during both sampling periods and to our knowledge, this is the first detection of NH₂Cl outdoors. Mixing ratios of NH₂Cl reached up to 2.2 and 4.0 parts per billion by volume (ppbv), with median mixing ratios of 30 and 120 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) during the 2014 and 2016 sampling periods, respectively. Levels of Cl₂ were observed to reach up to 220 and 320 pptv. Analysis of the NH₂Cl and Cl₂ data pointed to the same local source, a nearby indoor sports complex with a swimming pool and a cleaning product storage shed. No appreciable levels of NHCl₂ and NCl₃ were observed outdoors, suggesting the indoor pool was not likely to be the primary source of the observed ambient chloramines, as prior measurements made in indoor pool atmospheres indicate that NCl₃ would be expected to dominate. Instead, these observations point to indoor cleaning and/or cleaning product emissions as the probable source of NH₂Cl and Cl₂ where the measured levels provide indirect evidence for substantial amounts transported from indoors to outdoors. Our upper estimate for total NH₂Cl emissions from the University of Leicester indoor sports complexes scaled for similar sports complexes across the UK is 3.4 × 10⁵ ± 1.1 × 10⁵ μg h^-1 and 0.0017 ± 0.00034 Gg yr^-1, respectively. The Cl-equivalent emissions in HCl are only an order of magnitude less to those from hazardous waste incineration and iron and steel sinter production in the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI).

Seasonal variations of low molecular alkyl amines in PM2.5 in a North China Plain industrial city: Importance of secondary formation and combustion emissions

Atmospheric amines have unique acid-neutralizing capacity and play an important role in atmospheric chemical reactions. An integrated observation of PM_2.5 samples (from Dec 2015 to Nov 15, 2016) was conducted in a typical industrial city (Xuzhou), China. Concentrations of total measured amines (∑amines, including methylamine (MA), ethylamine (EA), dimethylamine (DMA), propanamine (PA) and trimethylamine (TMA) + diethylamine (DEA)) were 172.0 ± 98.2 ng m^-3, accounting 1.5 ± 0.6 ‰ of PM_2.5 mass. ∑amines were higher in winter (249.0 ± 112.3 ng m^-3) and spring (192.4 ± 75.9 ng m^-3) than in summer (114.7 ± 33.3 ng m^-3) and autumn (103.7 ± 34.3 ng m^-3). Concentrations of MA and EA (the dominant amines) were highest in winter, while DMA, PA and TMA + DEA showed opposite seasonality. EA/MA ratios ranged from 0.04 to 8.7 with a median value of 0.3, and the averaged EA/MA ratio was 2.0 in winter, indicating large contribution of EA. Environmental factors including temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and atmospheric oxidizing capacity (O₃ and O_x represented) were found to influence concentrations of amines in PM_2.5. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model identified secondary products (41.6 %), combustion emissions (39.8 %), soil and waste incineration emissions (13.2 %) and biological emissions and aging products (5.4 %) as the 4 sources of amines in PM_2.5. MA was mainly secondary products (82.5 %) and had high contribution of local secondary formation, while EA was mainly derived from combustion emissions (83.7 %) and influenced by regional transportation. In winter, combustion emissions (including coal combustion, biomass burning and traffic emissions, contributed 57.7 %) surpassed secondary products (31.6 %) as the predominant sources of amines, especially under the influence of regional transportation (75.7 %).

Determination of Gaseous and Particulate Secondary Amines in the Atmosphere Using Gas Chromatography Coupled with Electron Capture Detection

The aim of this study was to develop and optimize methods for the determination of gaseous and particulate (PM2.5) secondary amines (SAs) in the atmosphere using gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) following chemical derivatization. The methods employed the liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) of pentafluorobenzenesulfonyl derivatives of the SAs before analytical samples were injected into GC-ECD. The optimized methods were applied to the determination of SAs in gaseous and particulate samples at two sites (urban and rural areas) from June to September in 2021. Gaseous samples were collected into an SPE cartridge containing a mixture of silica gel and sulfamic acid at a flow rate of 2 L·min−1 for 48 h. Particulate samples were collected onto 47 mm filters by a cyclone sampler at a flow rate of 16.7 L·min−1 for 48 h. The linearity of calibration curves, accuracy, and precision of the methods were satisfactory. In most of the field samples, dimethylamine (DMA), methylethylamine (MEA), diethylamine (DEA), and dipropylamine (DPA) were found to be the most frequently encountered compounds at the sampling sites.

Methanogen Productivity and Microbial Community Composition Varies With Iron Oxide Mineralogy

Quantifying the flux of methane from terrestrial environments remains challenging, owing to considerable spatial and temporal variability in emissions. Amongst a myriad of factors, variation in the composition of electron acceptors, including metal (oxyhydr)oxides, may impart controls on methane emission. The purpose of this research is to understand how iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals with varied physicochemical properties influence microbial methane production and subsequent microbial community development. Incubation experiments, using lake sediment as an inoculum and acetate as a carbon source, were used to understand the influence of one poorly crystalline iron oxide mineral, ferrihydrite, and two well-crystalline minerals, hematite and goethite, on methane production. Iron speciation, headspace methane, and 16S-rRNA sequencing microbial community data were measured over time. Substantial iron reduction only occurred in the presence of ferrihydrite while hematite and goethite had little effect on methane production throughout the incubations. In ferrihydrite experiments the time taken to reach the maximum methane production rate was slower than under other conditions, but methane production, eventually occurred in the presence of ferrihydrite. We suggest that this is due to ferrihydrite transformation into more stable minerals like magnetite and goethite or surface passivation by Fe(II). While all experimental conditions enriched for Methanosarcina, only the presence of ferrihydrite enriched for iron reducing bacteria Geobacter. Additionally, the presence of ferrihydrite continued to influence microbial community development after the onset of methanogenesis, with the dissimilarity between communities growing in ferrihydrite compared to no-Fe-added controls increasing over time. This work improves our understanding of how the presence of different iron oxides influences microbial community composition and methane production in soils and sediments.

Observations of Gas-Phase Alkylamines at a Coastal Site in the East Mediterranean Atmosphere

Atmospheric amines are ubiquitous compounds in the atmosphere, having both natural and anthropogenic origin. Recently, they have been identified as important contributors to new particle formation in the atmosphere, but observations of their atmospheric concentrations are scarce. In the present study we introduce the first systematic long-term observations of gas-phase amines measurements in the East Mediterranean atmosphere. Air samples were collected at the Finokalia monitoring station of the University of Crete during a 3.5-year period from January 2013 to July 2016, and analyzed after extraction using a high-performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The detected alkylamines were the sum of dimethylamine and ethylamine (DMA+EA), trimethylamine (TMA), diethylamine (DEA) and triethylamine (TEA). DMA+EA and TMA were the most abundant alkylamines, with concentrations spanning from the detection limit to 78.0 and 69.8 pptv, and average concentrations of 7.8 ± 12.1 and 7.5 ± 12.4 pptv, respectively. Amines showed pronounced seasonal variability with DMA+EA and TMA concentrations being higher in winter. Statistical analysis of the observations showed different sources for each of the studied amines, except for DMA+ΕA and DEA that appear to have common sources in the region. This analysis points to a marine source of TMA and animal husbandry in the area as a potential source of TEA. None of the alkylamines is correlated with other anthropogenic sources. Furthermore, no clear association was found between the seasonality of NPF events and alkylamines concentrations, while a clear correlation was detected between the seasonality of nucleation mode particle (dp < 25 nm) number concentrations and alkylamine concentrations, indicating that amines may contribute to nucleation mode particles’ production.

Determination of ammonium and biogenic amines by ion chromatography. A review

The amount and type of chemical compounds found in food products and the environment, which are and should be controlled, is increasing. This is associated with toxicological knowledge, resulting regulations, rapid development of analytical methods and techniques, and sample preparation methods for analysis. These include, among others, ammonia derivatives such as ammonium, and amines, including biogenic amines. Their occurrence in the environment and food is related to their widespread use in many areas of life and their formation as a result of various physical and chemical changes. Analysts use various methods both classical and instrumental to theirs quantify in different matrices such as food, medicinal and environmental samples. Nevertheless, there is still a need for analytical methods with increased matrix-tolerance, selectivity, specificity, and higher sensitivity. While in the determination of ammonium, ion chromatography is a reference method. In the case of biogenic amines, its use for these purposes is not yet so common. However, given ion chromatography its advantages and rapid development, its importance can be expected to increase in the near future, especially at the expense of gas chromatography methods. This paper is a summary of the advantages and limitations of ion chromatography in this important analytical field and a literature review of the past 15 years.

Analysis of amino acids, hydroxy acids, and amines in CR chondrites

The abundances, relative distributions, and enantiomeric and isotopic compositions of amines, amino acids, and hydroxy acids in Miller Range (MIL) 090001 and MIL 090657 meteorites were determined. Chiral distributions and isotopic compositions confirmed that most of the compounds detected were indigenous to the meteorites and not the result of terrestrial contamination. Combined with data in the literature, suites of these compounds have now been analyzed in a set of six CR chondrites, spanning aqueous alteration types 2.0-2.8. Amino acid abundances ranged from 17 to 3300 nmol g^-1 across the six CRs; hydroxy acid abundances ranged from 180 to 1800 nmol g^-1; and amine abundances ranged from 40 to 2100 nmol g^-1. For amino acids and amines, the weakly altered chondrites contained the highest abundances, whereas hydroxy acids were most abundant in the more altered CR2.0 chondrite. Because water contents in the meteorites are orders of magnitude greater than soluble organics, synthesis of hydroxy acids, which requires water, may be less affected by aqueous alteration than amines and amino acids that require nitrogen-bearing precursors. Two chiral amino acids that were plausibly extraterrestrial in origin were present with slight enantiomeric excesses: L-isovaline (~10% excess) and D-β-amino-n-butyric acid (~9% excess); further studies are needed to verify that the chiral excess in the latter compound is truly extraterrestrial in origin. The isotopic compositions of compounds reported here did not reveal definitive links between the different compound classes such as common synthetic precursors, but will provide a framework for further future in-depth analyses.

Mercury sources in a subterranean spontaneous combustion area

Mercury is a toxic, persistent, and mobile contaminant. Coal spontaneous combustion are widely distributed in the world and releases a great deal of Hg. Identifying the burning coal seam is crucial for quickly extinguishing a coalfield fire. Mercury isotopes can be effective for identifying burning coal seams and beneficial for combating coal spontaneous combustion. In this study, Hg isotopic ratios of coal, topsoil, dustfall, sand, coal fire sponges (CFS), and n-topsoil (topsoil near the CFS) from coal fire area No. 9 in the Wuda coalfield were determined using multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS). Analysis of the correlation coefficients between the δ²⁰²Hg and Hg concentrations and the low-temperature ashes indicate that the higher mineral concentration in coal seam No. 9 not only increases the Hg concentration but also leads to more positive δ²⁰²Hg values compared to those for coal seam No. 10. By analyzing the Hg isotope characterizations in coal seam No. 9 and No. 10, we determined that Hg isotope characterizations can be useful for discriminating different coal seam Hg values in a coalfield. Significant mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) occur in the coal burning. The fractionation effect of burning and absorption process can play a key role in the δ²⁰²Hg more negative of ground surface samples. If Hg isotopes is added, the effect of coal-fire monitoring may be better. In addition, these finding could be used to better understand the transport and cycling of Hg.

Towards a generic method for ion chromatography/mass spectrometry of low-molecular-weight amines in pharmaceutical drug discovery and development

RATIONALE

Low-molecular-weight amines are encountered in pharmaceutical analysis, e.g. as reactants in chemical syntheses, but are challenging to analyse using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS) due to their high polarity causing poor retention. Ion chromatography/mass spectrometry (IC/MS) is an emerging technique for polar molecule analysis that offers better separation. A generic IC/MS method would overcome problems associated with using UHPLC/MS in drug discovery and development environments.

METHODS

Amine standards were analysed using IC/MS with gradient elution (variety of column temperatures evaluated). An electrospray ionisation (ESI) quadrupole mass spectrometer was operated in positive ion polarity in scanning mode. The make-up flow composition was evaluated by assessing the performance of a range of organic modifiers (acetonitrile, ethanol, methanol) and additives (acetic acid, formic acid, methanesulfonic acid). The ESI conditions were optimised to minimise adduct formation and promote generation of protonated molecules.

RESULTS

The performance attributes were investigated and optimised for low-molecular-weight amine analysis. Organic solvents and acidic additives were evaluated as make-up flow components to promote ESI, with 0.05% acetic acid in ethanol optimal for producing protonated molecules. The hydrogen bonding capability of amines led to abundant protonated molecule-solvent complexes; optimisation of source conditions reduced these, with collision-induced dissociation voltage having a strong effect. The detection limit was ≤1.78 ng for the amines analysed, which is fit-for-purpose for an open-access chemistry environment.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates the value of IC/MS for analysing low-molecular-weight amines. Good chromatographic separation of mixtures was possible without derivatisation. Ionisation efficiency was greatest using a make-up flow of 0.05% acetic acid in ethanol, and optimisation of ESI source conditions promoted protonated molecule generation for easy determination of molecular weight.

A Quantitative Method to Measure and Speciate Amines in Ambient Aerosol Samples

Ambient reactive nitrogen is a mix of nitrogen-containing organic and inorganic compounds. These various compounds are found in both aerosol- and gas-phases with oxidized and reduced forms of nitrogen. Aerosol-phase reduced nitrogen is predominately thought to include ammonium and amines. In ambient samples, the ammonium concentration is routinely determined, but the contribution of amines is not. We developed a method to discretely measure amines from ambient aerosol samples. It employs ion chromatography using a Thermo Scientific IonPac Dionex CS-19 column with conductivity detection and a three-step separation using a methanesulfonic acid eluent. This method allows for the quantification of 18 different amines, including the series of methylamines and the different isomers of butylamine. Almost all amines quantifiable by this technique were measured regularly when applying this method to ambient filter samples collected in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) and Greeley, CO. The sum of the amines was ~0.02 µg m−3 at both sites. This increased to 0.04 and 0.09 µg m−3 at RMNP and Greeley, respectively, at the same time they were impacted by smoke. Analysis of separate, fresh biomass burning source samples, however, suggests that smoke is likely a minor emission source of amines in most environments.

Indoor acids and bases

Numerous acids and bases influence indoor air quality. The most abundant of these species are CO₂ (acidic) and NH₃ (basic), both emitted by building occupants. Other prominent inorganic acids are HNO₃ , HONO, SO₂ , H₂ SO₄ , HCl, and HOCl. Prominent organic acids include formic, acetic, and lactic; nicotine is a noteworthy organic base. Sources of N-, S-, and Cl-containing acids can include ventilation from outdoors, indoor combustion, consumer product use, and chemical reactions. Organic acids are commonly more abundant indoors than outdoors, with indoor sources including occupants, wood, and cooking. Beyond NH₃ and nicotine, other noteworthy bases include inorganic and organic amines. Acids and bases partition indoors among the gas-phase, airborne particles, bulk water, and surfaces; relevant thermodynamic parameters governing the partitioning are the acid-dissociation constant (K_a ), Henry's law constant (K_H ), and the octanol-air partition coefficient (K_oa ). Condensed-phase water strongly influences the fate of indoor acids and bases and is also a medium for chemical interactions. Indoor surfaces can be large reservoirs of acids and bases. This extensive review of the state of knowledge establishes a foundation for future inquiry to better understand how acids and bases influence the suitability of indoor environments for occupants, cultural artifacts, and sensitive equipment.

Novel ionization reagent for the measurement of gas-phase ammonia and amines using a stand-alone atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) source

RATIONALE

Contaminants present in ambient air or in sampling lines can interfere with the target analysis through overlapping peaks or causing a high background. This study presents a positive outcome from the unexpected presence of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, released from a PALL HEPA filter, in the analysis of atmospherically relevant gas-phase amines using chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

METHODS

Gas-phase measurements were performed using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with a modified atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) source which allows sampling of the headspace above pure amine standards. Gas-phase N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) emitted from a PALL HEPA filter located in the inlet stream served as the ionizing agent.

RESULTS

This study demonstrates that some alkylamines efficiently form a [NMP + amine+H]⁺ cluster with NMP upon chemical ionization at atmospheric pressure. The extent of cluster formation depends largely on the proton affinity of the amine compared with that of NMP. Aromatic amines (aniline, pyridine) and diamines (putrescine) were shown not to form cluster ions with NMP.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of NMP as an ionizing agent with stand-alone APGC provided high sensitivity for ammonia and the smaller amines. The main advantages, in addition to sensitivity, are direct sampling into the APGC source and avoiding uptake on sampling lines which can be a significant problem with ammonia and amines.

Simultaneous determination of nine atmospheric amines and six inorganic ions by non-suppressed ion chromatography using acetonitrile and 18-crown-6 as eluent additive

Atmospheric amines contribute to the nucleation and initial growth of new particles as well as secondary organic aerosol formation, influencing the radiative balance of the Earth's atmosphere. In this study, we develop an ion chromatography (IC) method for separating and quantifying the nine most abundant amines (methylaminium (MMAH⁺), dimethylaminium (DMAH⁺), trimethylaminium (TMAH⁺), ethylaminium (MEAH⁺), diethylaminium (DEAH⁺), propylaminium (MPAH⁺), butylaminium (MBAH⁺), ethanolaminium (MEOH⁺), and triethanolaminium (TEOH⁺)) from six common inorganic species in atmospheric aerosols. The retention times of the amines were altered by the addition of acetonitrile to the eluent because acetonitrile can reduce the adsorption of hydrophobic amines on the stationary phase. The developed method achieved the successful separation of DEAH⁺ and TMAH⁺ from inorganic cations, which often coelute with each other in established IC methods. The interference of K⁺ on the determination of MEAH⁺ was eliminated by the complexation of K⁺ with 18-crown-6, which prolonged the retention time of K⁺. Finally, 9 target amines and 6 common inorganic cations were separated, with a resolution Rs ≥ 1.2 for DEAH⁺ and MPAH⁺ and Rs > 1.5 for other species. The detection limits varied in the range of 0.34-1.48 ng for the 9 amines and 0.19-0.56 ng for the inorganic cations. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of low molecular weight amines and inorganic cations in PM_2.5 collected from an urban site in Shanghai and an isolated coast of Chongming Island. Eight amines were detected in the urban samples, in which MMAH⁺ and DMAH⁺ dominated. The average amine concentration in the urban aerosols was 76.3 ± 38.4 ng m^-3, which is approximately 4-fold higher than those in the marine samples collected from the coast.

Integrated experimental and theoretical approach to probe the synergistic effect of ammonia in methanesulfonic acid reactions with small alkylamines

While new particle formation events have been observed worldwide, our fundamental understanding of the precursors remains uncertain. It has been previously shown that small alkylamines and ammonia (NH3) are key actors in sub-3 nm particle formation through reactions with acids such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and methanesulfonic acid (CH3S(O)(O)OH, MSA), and that water also plays a role. Because NH3 and amines co-exist in air, we carried out combined experimental and theoretical studies examining the influence of the addition of NH3 on particle formation from the reactions of MSA with methylamine (MA) and trimethylamine (TMA). Experiments were performed in a 1 m flow reactor at 1 atm and 296 K. Measurements using an ultrafine condensation particle counter (CPC) and a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) show that new particle formation was systematically enhanced upon simultaneous addition of NH3 to the MSA + amine binary system, with the magnitude depending on the amine investigated. For the MSA + TMA reaction system, the addition of NH3 at ppb concentrations produced a much greater effect (i.e. order of magnitude more particles) than the addition of ∼12 000 ppm water (corresponding to ∼45-50% relative humidity). The effect of NH3 on the MSA + MA system, which is already very efficient in forming particles on its own, was present but modest. Calculations of energies, partial charges and structures of small cluster models of the multi-component particles likewise suggest synergistic effects due to NH3 in the presence of MSA and amine. The local minimum structures and the interactions involved suggest mechanisms for this effect.

Development and validation of a HPLC/FLD method combined with online derivatization for the simple and simultaneous determination of trace amino acids and alkyl amines in continental and marine aerosols

A method was developed for simultaneous determination of 15 amino acids and 7 alkyl amines. The method was based on the employment of high performance liquid chromatography/fluorescence detection and online derivatization with o-phthaldiadehyde. The 22 derivatives were separated within 30 min including the equilibration time and detected by a fluorescence detector at an excitation wavelength of 230 nm and emission wavelength of 450 nm. The analysis procedure was satisfactorily validated by the reproducibility, recovery, linearity and detection limit of the analytes. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of retention time and peak area for individual amino acids and alkyl amines were consistently less than 0.30% and 2.35%, respectively. Good recovery values ranging from 70% to 109% were obtained. The proposed method showed good linearity (R2≥0.99) in the range of 0.125-125 μM/L for amino acids and 2.5-5000 ng/L for alkyl amines. The detection limit ranged from 0.13 pM to 0.37 pM for individual amino acids and from 0.9 ng to 7.2 ng for individual alkyl amines. The developed and validated method was successfully applied to the quantitative analysis of amino acids and alkyl amines in continental and marine aerosols in China. Among the identified organic nitrogen compounds, 7 amino acids and 6 alkyl amines were detected in every aerosol sample. Glycine was the dominant amino acid, with the average of 130.93 pmol/m3 (accounting for 83% of the total amino acids) and 137.22 pmol/m3 (accounting for 66% of the total amino acids) in continental and marine aerosols in China, respectively. Methylamine and ethanolamine were the most abundant alkyl amines, contributing 87% and 64% to the total alkyl amines in continental and marine aerosols in China, respectively. This work provided an accurate, sensitive and simple method to determine simultaneously amino acids and alkyl amines, and applied the proposed method to the first investigation of amino acids in Shanghai and amino acids and alkyl amines in Huaniao Island in China. The finding of considerable amino acids and alkyl amines in continental and marine aerosols may exert significant implications on nitrogen cycling and atmospheric chemistry.

Dimethylamine as a major alkyl amine species in particles and cloud water: Observations in semi-arid and coastal regions

Aerosol and cloud water measurements of dimethylamine (DMA), the most abundant amine in this study, were conducted in semi-arid (Tucson, Arizona) and marine (Nucleation in California Experiment, NiCE; central coast of California) areas. In both regions, DMA exhibits a unimodal aerosol mass size distribution with a dominant peak between 0.18 and 0.56 μm. Particulate DMA concentrations increase as a function of marine biogenic emissions, sulfate, BVOC emissions, and aerosol-phase water. Such data supports biogenic sources of DMA, aminium salt formation, and partitioning of DMA to condensed phases. DMA concentrations exhibit positive correlations with various trace elements and most especially vanadium, which warrants additional investigation. Cloud water DMA levels are enhanced significantly during wildfire periods unlike particulate DMA levels, including in droplet residual particles, due to effective dissolution of DMA into cloud water and probably DMA volatilization after drop evaporation. DMA:NH⁺₄ molar ratios peak between 0.18 and 1.0 μm depending on the site and time of year, suggesting that DMA competes better with NH₃ in those sizes in terms of reactive uptake by particles.

Gas phase oxidation of monoethanolamine (MEA) with OH radical and ozone: kinetics, products, and particles

Monoethanolamine (MEA) is currently the benchmark solvent in carbon capture and storage (CCS), a technology aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in large combustion industries. To accurately assess the environmental impact of CCS, a sound understanding of the fate of MEA in the atmosphere is necessary. Relative and absolute rate kinetic experiments were conducted in a smog chamber using online proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) to follow the decay of MEA. The room temperature (295 ± 3K) kinetics of oxidation with hydroxyl radicals from light and dark sources yield an average value of (7.02 ± 0.46) × 10(-11) cm(3) molec(-1) s(-1), in good agreement with previously published data. For the first time, the rate coefficient for MEA with ozone was measured: (1.09 ± 0.05) × 10(-18) cm(3) molec(-1) s(-1). An investigation into the oxidation products was also conducted using online chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI-TOFMS) where formamide, isocyanic acid as well as higher order products including cyclic amines were detected. Significant particle numbers and mass loadings were observed during the MEA oxidation experiments and accounted for over 15% of the fate of MEA-derived nitrogen.

Multiphase chemistry of atmospheric amines

Heterogeneous reactions of amines have been recently shown to play an important role in the formation and transformation of atmospheric aerosols. This perspective summarizes the latest laboratory progress in the multiphase chemistry of amines. Particular emphasis is given to the contributions of amines to new particle formation, growth of submicron particles, and alteration in the physiochemical properties of pre-existing particles, including hygroscopicity, thermostability, density, phase, and optical properties, from exposure to gaseous amines. The atmospheric implications of the multiphase reactions of amines, including the potential impact on direct and indirect climate forcing of aerosols, and future research directions are discussed.
