Magnetic solid-phase extraction using poly(para-phenylenediamine) modified with magnetic nanoparticles as adsorbent for analysis of monocyclic aromatic amines in water and urine samples

Rapid green analytical methodology for simultaneous monitoring of nitrosamines and semi-volatile organic compounds in water and human urine samples

Nitrosamines and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are carcinogenic contaminants in water and biological matrices. Conventional analytical methods often struggle to detect trace concentrations due to poor extraction efficacies. This study presents a novel, low-cost, in-syringe-assisted fast extraction cum cleanup technique coupled with GC-FID for monitoring four nitrosamines and two SVOCs in drinking water and human urine samples to measure the contamination and exposure levels. This extraction protocol combines a novel green in-syringe liquid-liquid extraction step using dimethyl carbonate as the green extraction solvent, coupled with a semi-automated solid-phase extraction cleanup process. Then, the final extractant is analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) for monitoring. The method demonstrated excellent linearity (R2 > 0.998) between 1.5 and 500 ng mL⁻1 for all six target compounds. Detection limits ranged from 1.0 to 2.0 ng mL⁻1. Extraction recoveries were between 87 and 105% for both urine samples and water samples. Intra-day and inter-day precision were below 9% RSD. The blue applicability grade index evaluation scored 70.0, indicating good practical applicability. The developed analytical protocol offers a sensitive, accurate, low-cost, rapid, and environmentally friendly method for simultaneously quantifying multiple nitrosamines and SVOCs in environmental and human samples. Its performance characteristics and sustainability metrics suggest the potential for broad application in monitoring and exposure studies.

Fabrication of a novel porous nanostructure based on NiCuFe2O4@MCM-48, embedded with graphene oxide/poly (p-phenylenediamine) to construct an efficient supercapacitor

In this study, a new nanocomposite was created by combining copper-doped nickel ferrite (NiCuFe2O4) nanoparticles with MCM-48 (Mobil Composition of Matter No. 48) on a graphene oxide (GO) substrate functionalized with poly(ρ-phenylenediamine) abbreviated as (PρPD). This nanocomposite was developed to investigate its potential for enhancing the function of a supercapacitor in energy storage. Following NiCuFe2O4@MCM-48 preparation, Hummer's technique GO was applied. In-situ polymerization of NiCuFe2O4@MCM-48/GO nanoparticles with ρ-phenylenediamine (ρPD) in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) produced PρPD, a conductive polymer. Structural characterization of the nanocomposite includes FTIR, XRD, VSM, TGA-DTG, EDX, and FE-SEM. Results from BET indicate a pore size increase of up to 5 nm. Fast ion penetration and higher storage in capacitor material are explained by this. Additionally, the nanocomposite's electrochemical performance was evaluated using GCD and CV tests. The NiCuFe2O4@MCM-48/GO/PρPD nanocomposite has a specific capacitance of 203.57 F g-1 (1 A g-1). Furthermore, cyclical stability is essential for energy storage applications. The nanocomposite retains 92.5% of its original capacitance after 3000 cycles, indicating outstanding electrochemical stability.

Voltammetric sensing of Cd(II) at ZIF-8/GO modified electrode: Optimization and field measurements

In this work, a metal-organic framework/graphene oxide (MOF(ZIF-8)/GO) nanocomposite was utilized for the electroanalysis of trace level of Cd(II) after modification of a cheap graphite rod electrode (GRE). After closed circuit process on the modified electrode, the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) technique was used for measuring of Cd(II). In optimal conditions, the sensor showed a linear dependence of current with concentration range 0.1-30 ppb for Cd(II). Moreover, limit of detection 0.03 ppb were obtained. Besides good selectivity, the sensor also indicated good reproducibility (below 5%). Moreover, the sensor showed satisfactory sensing performance in river, dam and wastewater samples with recovery ranging from 97.2% to 102.4%. Additionally, possible interfering cations were examined, but no significant interference was found. For the detection of trace Cd(II) in real matrices, this sensor illustrated other good merits like high stability, rapidity and simplicity.

Comparison of gas chromatographic techniques for the analysis of iodinated derivatives of aromatic amines

Some aromatic amines (AA) have been classified as carcinogens to humans. After entering the body, mainly through tobacco smoke, they can be detected in urine. Thus, their trace analysis as biomarkers in biofluids is of high relevance and can be achieved with gas chromatography (GC-MS), usually after derivatization. This study compares three gas chromatographic methods for the analysis of ten iodinated derivatives of AA: GC-MS in single-ion monitoring (SIM) mode with (1) electron ionization (GC-EI-MS) and (2) negative chemical ionization (GC-NCI-MS), and (3) GC-EI-MS/MS in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode using electron ionization. All methods and most analytes showed good coefficients of determination (R² > 0.99) for broad linear ranges covering three to five orders of magnitude in the picogram-per-liter to nanogram-per-liter range, with one and two exceptions for (1) and (2) respectively. Excellent limits of detection (LODs) of 9-50, 3.0-7.3, and 0.9-3.9 pg/L were observed for (1), (2), and (3) respectively, and good precision was achieved (intra-day repeatability < 15% and inter-day repeatability < 20% for most techniques and concentration levels). On average, recoveries between 80 and 104% were observed for all techniques. Urine samples of smokers and non-smokers were successfully analyzed, and p-toluidine and 2-chloroaniline could be found at significantly (α = 0.05) higher concentrations among smokers.

Insight into the adsorptive removal of ibuprofen using porous carbonaceous materials: A review

Over the last decade, the removal of pharmaceuticals from aquatic bodies has garnered substantial attention from the scientific community. Ibuprofen (IBP), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is released into the environment in pharmaceutical waste as well as medical, hospital, and household effluents. Adsorption technology is a highly efficient approach to reduce the IBP in the aquatic environment, particularly at low IBP concentrations. Due to the exceptional surface properties of carbonaceous materials, they are considered ideal adsorbents for the IBP removal of, with high binding capacity. Given the importance of the topic, the adsorptive removal of IBP from effluent using various carbonaceous adsorbents, including activated carbon, biochar, graphene-based materials, and carbon nanostructures, has been compiled and critically reviewed. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior, binding mechanisms, the most effective parameters, thermodynamics, and regeneration methods as well as the cost analysis were comprehensively reviewed for modified and unmodified carbonaceous adsorbents. The compiled studies on the IBP adsorption shows that the IBP uptake of some carbon-based adsorbents is significantly than that of commercial activated carbons. In the future, much attention is needed for practical utilization and upscaling of the research findings to aid the management and sustainability of water resource.

Urinary bio-monitoring of aromatic amine derivatives by new needle trap device packed with the multi-component adsorbent

Aromatic amines are a large group of chemical compounds that have attracted the attention of researchers due to their toxicity and carcinogenicity. This study aimed to develop an efficient method for sampling and analysis of aromatic amines (Aniline, N, N-dimethylaniline, 2-chloroaniline, and 3-chloroaniline) from the vapour phase (headspace) of urine samples. For the implementation of this plan, a needle trap device packed with the three-component adsorbent consisting of nano-Hydroxy Apatite (nHA), Zeolite (Ze), and Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) equipped with GC-FID was employed for the first phase. Examination of the prepared adsorbents was performed by FT-IR, PXRD, and FE-SEM techniques. The optimal value of considerable parameters such as time and temperature of extraction, salt content, and pH were established using the Response Surface Methodology-Central Composite Design (RMS-CCD) method. In this way, the optimal extraction of targeted analytes was accomplished in 41 min at 41 °C with NaCl content of 33.0% (w/v) and pH: 13.0, respectively. Also, the repeatability and reproducibility of the method were calculated to be in the range of 2.2-7.1% and 3.9-8.1%, respectively, which indicates the acceptable precision of the method. Also, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were determined in the range of 0.3-32.0 ng.L^-1 and 0.8-350.0 ng.L^-1, respectively, which proves the high sensitivity of the proposed method. Furthermore, the recovery percent of the extracted analytes was concluded in the range of 97.0-99.0% after 6 and 30 days of the sampling and storage at 25 °C and 4 °C, respectively. Finally, the designed procedure was employed in the analysis of the above-mentioned aromatic amines in the real urine samples. The achieved results illustrate that the three-component absorbent system (nHA;Ze;MOF@NTD) can be introduced as an efficient, fast-response, sensitive, and versatile procedure for trace analysis of the different aromatic amine compounds in public and occupational health.

Short- and Long-Term Stability of Aromatic Amines in Human Urine

Several aromatic amines (AAs) are established by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as carcinogenic (group 1) or probable/possible carcinogens to humans (group 2A/2B). AAs can be found in mainstream and sidestream smoke from combustible tobacco products, as well as in certain environmental pollution and occupational exposure from several chemical industry sectors. Exposure to AAs can be estimated by measuring their concentrations in urine; however, information about the short-term and long-term stabilities of AAs in urine need to be characterized before conducting large-scale population studies on AA exposure and the potentially harmful effects of AA exposure. In this report, the storage stability of o-toluidine, 2,6-dimethylaniline, o-anisidine, 1-aminonaphthalene, 2-aminonaphthalene, and 4-aminobiphenyl fortified in pooled, filtered, non-smokers' urine is analyzed by isotope dilution gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (ID GC-MS/MS). The six AAs were measured in urine samples stored at ~20 °C (collection temperature), 4 °C and 10 °C (short-term transit temperatures), and -20 °C and -70 °C (long-term storage temperatures) over a 10-day period. All six analytes were stable for 10 days at transit and long-term storage temperatures but showed reduced recovery at 20 °C. The instability of the target AAs at 20 °C suggests that immediate storage of freshly voided urine at low temperatures is needed to attenuate degradation. A subset of the urine samples was analyzed following a longer storage duration at -70 °C: all AAs were stable for up to 14 months at this temperature. The stability of the six AAs in urine samples can be maintained at the various temperature levels and storage times expected in a typical study set.

A Core-Shell Amino-Functionalized Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on Glycidyl Methacrylate for Dispersive Solid-Phase Microextraction of Aniline

A core-shell amino-functionalized glycidyl methacrylate magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by the suspension polymerization/surface imprinting method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry, nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption, and elemental analysis. This MIP was used as the sorbent in dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) of aniline from textile wastewater prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) measurements. Since aniline is toxic and a probable human carcinogen, its determination in water is of great significance. This is a challenging task because aniline is usually present at trace levels. The effects of different DSPME variables on the preconcentration efficiency have been studied by using the Plackett–Burman screening design of experiments (DoE) followed by response surface methodology optimization using the Box-Behnken design. Thus, DoE enabled the investigation of several variables simultaneously. Under optimized conditions, aniline was effectively and selectively separated by a small amount of the DSPME sorbent and detected in real textile wastewater samples. The method detection limit of 1 ng mL−1 was attained, with good method linearity and acceptable recovery and precision. The results showed that the studied MIP could be a reliable DSPME sorbent for efficiently analyzing trace aniline in real wastewater samples.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Rapid determination of folic acid and riboflavin in urine by polypyrrole magnetic solid-phase extractant combined ultra-performance liquid chromatography

Determination of folic acid and riboflavin in biological samples is difficult due to their high polarity, low concentration, chemical instability, and complex matrix. In this study, the polypyrrole-coated magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@PPy) was synthesized innovatively with the assistance of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. To evaluate the adsorption mechanism and the feasibility of synthesized Fe₃O₄@PPy as an adsorbent, the adsorption capacities, kinetics and thermodynamics of folic acid and riboflavin were investigated systemically. Furthermore, in light of the chemical instability of folic acid and riboflavin a method for rapid extraction and detection of them from human urine within 10 min was developed successfully by combining magnetic solid phase extraction with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (MSPE/UPLC). The adsorption parameters including sorbent amount, pH value, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time were studied. Under optimum conditions, the performance of the established determination method was validated with the linearly dependent coefficients (>0.9995), the limits of detection (0.02-0.05 µg/mL), the limits of quantification (0.07-0.18 µg/mL), and the recoveries (92.2-105.1%, with relative standard deviation < 3.3%). The rapid extraction and detection of folic acid and riboflavin from real urine samples were achieved subsequently. The present study suggests that the developed method exhibits a promising application in the analysis of free folic acid and riboflavin in human urine samples, which can provide a reference for the clinical drug monitoring and treatment.

Amino-based magneto-polymeric-modified mixed iron hydroxides for magnetic solid phase extraction of phenol residues in environmental samples

Mixed iron hydroxides (MIHs) modified with different amino-based polymeric materials, including aminopropyltriethoxysilane, polydopamine, diaminobenzoic acid, polyaniline, and polyphenylenediamine, were comparatively investigated as sorbents for the extraction of phenol compounds. Polyphenylenediamine-modified mixed iron hydroxides (MIH@PPDA) showed high adsorption capability for most target analytes. Its ferromagnetic behavior, with a magnetization of 17.38 emu g^-1, was sufficient for subsequent use in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The functional groups, morphology, and magnetic properties of this magnetic nanomaterial were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, and CHN analysis. High-performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector was used to quantify phenol compounds. The experimental parameters affecting the efficiency of the entire MSPE process were optimized. Good linearity in the range of 0.5-1000 µg L^-1 was obtained (depended on the compound). The detection and quantitation limits varied from 0.01 to 0.3 µg L^-1 and 0.03 to 0.9 µg L^-1, respectively. The enrichment factors for all phenol compounds were in the range of 80-285. The precision in terms of intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were below 5.8% and 6.2%, respectively. The developed MSPE method was applied to analyze phenol compounds in diverse samples, including soil, drinking water, and fruit. Relative recoveries of 76.7-130.1% were obtained. The MIH@PPDA magneto-polymeric sorbent exhibits good stability and is reliable for a variety of phenol compounds.

A review of the analysis of biomarkers of exposure to tobacco and vaping products

Quantification of exposure to different chemicals from both combustible cigarettes and vaping products is important in providing information on the potential health risks of these products. To assess the exposure to tobacco products, biomarkers of exposure (BOEs) are measured in a variety of biological matrices. In this review paper, current knowledge on analytical methods applied to the analysis of biomarkers of exposure to tobacco products is discussed. Numerous sample preparation techniques are available for the extraction and sample clean up for the analysis of BOEs to tobacco and nicotine delivery products. Many tobacco products-related exposure biomarkers have been analyzed using different instrumental techniques, the most common techniques being gas and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS, GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS). To assess exposure to emerging tobacco products and study exposure in dual tobacco users, the list of biomarkers analyzed in urine samples has been expanded. Therefore, the current state of the literature can be used in preparing a preferred list of biomarkers based on the aim of each study. The information summarized in this review is expected to be a handy tool for researchers involved in studying exposures to tobacco products, as well as in risk assessment of biomarkers of exposure to vaping products.

A novel magnetic solid-phase extraction method for detection of 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines by UPLC-MS/MS in meat products

The current study developed a cheap and effective method for the simultaneous extraction of 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in food matrix. Core-shell Fe₃O₄@PDA nanoparticles were constructed and acted as the magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent to separate and purify HAAs from meat products for the first time. Then, UPLC-MS/MS technique was employed to identify and quantify the HAAs easily. Fe₃O₄@PDA nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized successfully. Totally 14 HAAs were completely separated in 19.99 min with good regression coefficients. LODs and LOQs were in the range of 0.013-0.247 ng/g and 0.056-0.803 ng/g, respectively. The intra-day precisions and inter-day precisions were below 9%. Except for IQ[4,5-b], Phe-p-1, PhIP, other 11 types of HAAs (DMIP, 1,5,6-TMIP, IQ, IQx, MeIQ, MeIQx, 7,8-DiMeIQx, AαC, MeAαC, Harman, Norharman) could acquire relatively high recoveries (71.06%-108.49%). The proposed method was successfully devoted to the evaluation of HAAs levels in 8 commercial meat products to verify the adaptability.

A New Automated Method for the Analysis of Aromatic Amines in Human Urine by GC-MS/MS

Cigarette smoking significantly increases the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases as well as premature death. Aromatic amines (AAs) such as o-toluidine, 2-aminonaphthalene and 4-aminobiphenyl are found in cigarette smoke and are well-established human bladder carcinogens presumably acting via the formation of DNA adducts. These amines may be metabolized in the liver to acetylated or glucuronidated forms or oxidized to a hydroxylamine which may react with protein and DNA to form adducts. Free, acetylated and glucuronidated AAs are excreted in urine and can be measured as exposure biomarkers. Using isotope dilution GC-MS/MS, our laboratory quantifies six urinary AAs that are known or suspected carcinogens-o-toluidine, 2,6-dimethylaniline, o-anisidine, 1-aminonaphthalene, 2-aminonaphthalene and 4-aminobiphenyl-for large population studies such as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We also monitor two additional corresponding structural isomers-2-aminobiphenyl and 3-aminobiphenyl-to verify isomer separation. A new and improved automated sample preparation method was developed to quantify these AAs, in which, sample cleanup was done via Supported Liquid Extraction (SLE+ ISOLUTE®) on a Hamilton STAR™ workstation. This automated method increased sample throughput by reducing sample cleanup time from 8 to 4 h while maintaining precision (intra and inter-run coefficient of variation <7%) and accuracy (±17%). Recent improvements in our GC/MS method have enhanced our assay sensitivity and specificity, resulting in longer analytical column life and maintaining or reducing the limit of detection for all six analytes. Indigo ASCENTTM software (3.7.1, Indigo BioAutomation, Inc.) is used for peak integration, calibration and quantification. A streamlined sample data flow was created in parallel with the automated method, in which samples can be tracked from receiving to final laboratory information management system output with minimal human intervention, minimizing potential human error. This newly validated, automated method and sample data flow are currently applied in biomonitoring of AAs in the US noninstitutionalized population NHANES 2013-2014 cycle.

A hybrid material composed of a polyoxometalate of type BeW12O40 and an ionic liquid immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles as a sorbent for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides prior to their determination by gas chromatography

The authors describe a method for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) by using a magnetically separable sorbent consisting of a polyoxometalate of type BeW₁₂O₄₀ supported on imidazole functionalized silica-coated cobalt ferrite. The sorbent was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field-emission scanning electron micrographs, vibrating sample magnetometry and FT-IR. The effects of the amount of adsorbent, pH value, salt concentration, extraction time, desorption solvent nature and volume and desorption time were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the method resulted in the following figures of merit: (a) the linear parts of the calibration plots typically extend from 0.08 to 300 μg mL^-1 of OPPs; (b) detection limits are between 0.02 to 0.06 ng mL^-1; and (c), extraction recoveries from spiked samples vary from 70.0 to 89.2%, with relative standard deviations between 5.4 and 7.6%. The nanocomposites can be reused up to 10 times. Compared to other methods for pretreatment and preconcentration of OPPs, the new method is more rapid, sensitive, accurate and eco-friendly. The method was successfully applied to the determination of the OPP residues in water samples and fruit juices. Magnetic solid-phase extraction based on ferroferric oxide nanoparticles doubly coated with chitosan and β-cyclodextrin in layer-by-layer mode for the separation of ibuprofen
