Magnetic reduced graphene oxide functionalized with β-cyclodextrin as magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbents for the determination of phytohormones in tomatoes coupled with high performance liquid chromatography

Facile preparation of covalent-organic framework composites for magnetic solid-phase extraction of naphthaleneacetic acid in food prior to HPLC-UV analysis

Novel magnetic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were prepared by one-pot synthetic strategy and employed as an efficient adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) in food samples. Depending on the predesigned the hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions of magnetic COFs, the efficient and selective extraction process for NAA was achieved within 15 min. The magnetic COFs adsorbent combined with HPLC-UV was devoted to develop a novel quantitative method for NAA in complex food. The method afforded good coefficient in range of 0.002-10.0 µg mL-1 and low limit of detection was 0.0006 µg mL-1. And the newly established method afforded less adsorbent consumption, wider linearity and lower LODs than the reported analytical methods. Ultimately, the method was successfully applied to determine NAA in fresh pear, tomato and peach juice. The magnetic COFs based MSPE coupled with HPLC-UV method provided a simple, efficient and dependable alternative to monitor trace NAA in food samples.

Chemical bonding of cross-linked glutaraldehyde/chitosan on the surface of a titanium wire to prepare a robust biocompatible SPME fiber for analysis of phytohormones in plants

A robust biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber, so-called Ti/APTS/GA/CS, was prepared by chemical bonding of cross-linked glutaraldehyde-chitosan to the surface of a titanium wire using APTS. The fiber was applied for sampling of phytohormones in plant tissues, followed by HPLC-UV analysis. The structure and morphology of the fiber coating was investigated by FT-IR, SEM, EDX, XRD, and TGA techniques. A Box-Behnken design was implemented to optimize the experimental variables. The calibration graphs were linear over a wide linear range (0.5-200 μg L-1) with LODs over the range of 0.01-0.06 μg L-1. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were found to be 1.3-6.3% and 4.3-7.3%, respectively. The matrix effect values ranged from 86.5% to 111.7%, indicating that the complex sample matrices had an insignificant effect on the determination of phytohormones. The fiber was successfully employed for the direct-immersion SPME (DI-SPME-HPLC) analysis of the phytohormones in cucumber, tomato, date palm, and calendula samples.

Novel ferrofluid based on water-based deep eutectic solvents: application in dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of naphthalene-derived plant growth regulators in edible oil

A new ferrofluid extractant (Fe3O4 @SiO2-WDES) was ingeniously prepared by coating magnetic Fe3O4 @SiO2 microspheres with water-based deep eutectic solvent (WDES) and used for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and HPLC determination of naphthalene-derived plant growth regulators (PGRs, i.e., 1-naphthylacetic acid, 2-naphthylacetic acid, 1-naphthoxy acetic acid, 2-naphthyloxyacetic acid and 1-naphthylacetamide) in edible oil. Herein, mass transfer of the analytes in DLLME was significantly enhanced via increasing the contact surface by employing the microspheres as the supporter and dispersant of WDES, and phase separation can be efficiently achieved using an external magnet rather than centrifugation in traditional DLLME. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed for the optimization of core experimental conditions, and Analytical Eco-Scale and Analytical GREEnness Metric Approaches were adopted to evaluate the degree of greenness of the procedure. Under the optimal conditions, satisfactory performances of linearity ranged from 5 to 100 μg/L (R2 ≥ 0.9982), limit of detection (0.58-0.91 μg/L), limit of quantitation (1.9-3.0 μg/L), precision (RSDs ≤ 5.5%), recovery (81.3%-108.1%) and negligible matrix effect were achieved, which introduced a promising alternative route for the determination of naphthalene-derived plant growth regulators in edible oil.

Preparation and application of an imidazolium-based poly (ionic liquid) functionalized silica sorbent for solid-phase extraction of parabens from food samples

In this work, an imidazolium-based poly (ionic liquid) (poly(1-octyl-3-vinyl- imidazolium naphthalene sulfonate)) functionalized silica (poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-) @SiO2) was successfully prepared for the determination of parabens in food samples. The prepared poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-)@SiO2 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The simulation calculation results indicated that the suitable binding energies were between the polymeric ionic liquids and parabens, and the main interactions for extraction were hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π stacking interactions. In addition, compared with commercial extraction materials, the prepared poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-)@SiO2 sorbent showed comparable or even better extraction performance towards parabens. The effective parameters were optimized by a combination of the univariate method and Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under the optimum conditions, coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), wide linear ranges (1.0-800 μg L-1), good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9997) and low limits of detection (0.1 μg L-1) were obtained. In addition, the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) were all lower than 6.3%. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully used for the determination of parabens in food samples and satisfactory recoveries in the range of 76.9-97.4% were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed method had good sensitivity, accuracy and precision for the detection of parabens in food samples.

Fabrication of a core-shell porphyrin-based magnetic covalent organic framework for effective extraction of PCPs in a wide polarity range

A novel porphyrin-based magnetic covalent organic framework (PCOF) was first reported by using a facile synthetic procedure. The Fe₃O₄@NH₂@PCOF nanospheres were utilized to effectively extract personal care products in a wide polarity range (log K_ow values from 1.96 to 7.60). The successful magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of target analytes could be ascribed to the sufficient oxygen-, nitrogen- and phenyl-containing functional groups of the COF layer, which are demonstrated to be of good compatibility with pollutants exhibiting different polarities by using molecular dynamics simulations, independent gradient model analysis and various characterizations. The MSPE extraction efficiency was enhanced by optimizing key parameters. The findings indicated that the method had a wide linearity range (1-500 ng mL^-1 for parabens and UV filters) and low detection limits (0.4-0.9 ng mL^-1 for parabens and 0.2-0.6 ng mL^-1 for UV filters). The accuracy was reflected by recoveries ranging from 74% to 114%. Satisfactory intra- and inter-day precisions from 3.0% to 9.8% and 0.5%-9.1% were obtained. Overall, the proposed MSPE-HPLC method is accurate and reliable for identifying parabens as well as UV filters in wastewater and swimming pool water. The potential of the method for evaluating human exposure risk was unfolded.

Sensitive determination of auxins in environmental water and peach beverage by hyper crosslinked polymer-based solid-phase extraction with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection

As plant regulators, auxins can promote plant growth. However, they have toxicity and may cause harm to humans. Due to their low concentrations in food sample matrices, the enrichment and analysis of trace auxins in food samples is a challenging work. In this work, a series of hyper crosslinked polymers (HCPs) were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts acylation to extract four auxins (indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-propionic acid, indole-3-butyric acid and 1-naphthylacetic acid). Among these HCPs, the QP-TC-HCP, synthesized from p-quaterphenyl (QP) and terephthaloyl chloride (TC), showed the best adsorption performance for the auxins. It was then applied as the adsorbent for the solid-phase extraction of the auxins from environmental water and peach beverage samples, followed by high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 3.0-12.0 pg mL^-1 for environmental water and 18.0-36.0 pg mL^-1 for peach beverage sample. The method recoveries of the auxins for the spiked samples were in the range of 85.0-110.0%. The established method provided an alternative approach for the determination of auxins in food samples. In addition, different types of organic compounds were tested for the extraction by the QP-TC-HCP to assess its application potential and adsorption mechanism. It was concluded that the QP-TC-HCP had better extraction performance for the compounds with certain hydrophilicity and more hydrogen bonding sites.

Phenylpropanoids in Silybum marianum cultures treated with cyclodextrins coated with magnetic nanoparticles

The glucose oligosaccharide-derived cyclodextrins (CDs) are used for improving bioactive compound production in plant cell cultures because, in addition to their elicitation activity, CDs promote product removal from cells. However, despite these advantages, the industrial application of CDs is hampered by their high market price. A strategy to overcome this constraint was recently tested, in which reusable CD polymers coated with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were harnessed in Vitis vinifera cell cultures to produce t-resveratrol (t-R). In this study, we applied hydroxypropyl-β-CDs (HPCD) and HPCDs coated with magnetic nanoparticles (HPCD-EPI-MN) in methyl jasmonate (MJ)-treated transgenic Silybum marianum cultures ectopically expressing either a stilbene synthase gene (STS) or a chalcone synthase gene (CHS), and compared their effects on the yields of t-R and naringenin (Ng), respectively. HPCD-EPI-MN at 15 g/L stimulated the accumulation of metabolites in the culture medium of the corresponding transgenic cell lines, with up to 4 mg/L of t-R and 3 mg/L of Ng released after 3 days. Similar amounts were produced in cultures treated with HPCD. Concentrations higher than 15 g/L of HPCD-EPI-MN and prolonged incubation periods negatively affected cell growth and viability in both transgenic cell lines. Reutilization of HPCD-EPI-MN was possible in three elicitation cycles (72 h each), after which the polymer retained 25-30% of its initial efficiency, indicating good stability and reusability. Due to their capacity to adsorb metabolites and their recyclability, the application of magnetic CD polymers may reduce the costs of establishing efficient secondary metabolite production systems on a commercial scale. Polydimethylsiloxane/graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin sponge as a solid-phase extraction sorbent coupled with GC-MS for rapid adsorption and sensitive determination of lavender essential oil

An adsorbent polydimethylsiloxane/graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin sponge, which possessed the merits of high surface area, chemical stability, environment friendly and excellent extraction capacity, was successfully fabricated. Based on the advantages, a novel microwave-assisted headspace solid-phase extraction method for lavender essential oil using polydimethylsiloxane/graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin sponge as adsorbents was developed in this study. Various experimental parameters were studied. The optimal extraction conditions were as follows: 1 mg mL^-1 as dopamine solution concentration, graphene oxide dosages of 30 mg, microwave power of 700 W, microwave irradiation time of 10 min and desorption solvent of n-hexane. Under the optimal extraction condition, linearities ranging from 10 to 800 ng were achieved for six representative compounds with the correlation coefficients value of >0.99. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were in the ranges of 0.40-1.56% and 0.67-2.56%, respectively. Finally, the proposed technique was applied to analyze essential oil constituents in 14 samples of three lavender varieties, and 48 compounds were identified. Lavender varieties were distinguished using principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis. The results showed that the mothed developed in this study is a novel, simple, and sensitive method for the determination of essential oil in complex plant samples. Beta-Cyclodextrin-Decorated Magnetic Activated Carbon as a Sorbent for Extraction and Enrichment of Steroid Hormones (Estrone, β-Estradiol, Hydrocortisone and Progesterone) for Liquid Chromatographic Analysis

A β-cyclodextrin-decorated magnetic activated carbon adsorbent was prepared and characterized using various analytical techniques (X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy–electron diffraction spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)), and the adsorbent was used in the development of a magnetic solid-phase microextraction (MSPE) method for the preconcentration of estrone, β-estradiol, hydrocortisone and progesterone in wastewater and river water samples. This method was optimized using the central composite design in order to determine the experimental parameters affecting the extraction procedure. The quantification of hormones was achieved using high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Under optimum conditions, the linearity ranged from 0.04 to 300 µg L⁻¹ with a correlation of determinations of 0.9969–0.9991. The limits of detection and quantification were between 0.01–0.03 and 0.033–0.1 µg L⁻¹, with intraday and interday precisions at 1.1–3.4 and 3.2–4.2. The equilibrium data were best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, and high adsorption capacities (217–294 mg g⁻¹) were obtained. The developed procedure demonstrated high potential as an effective technique for use in wastewater samples without significant interferences, and the adsorbent could be reused up to eight times.

[Novel adsorption material for solid phase extraction in sample pretreatment of plant hormones]

Plant hormones (PHs) are of significance in plant growth, as they regulate the various processes related to plant growth, development, and resistance. Sensitive and precise quantitative analysis of PHs is a bottleneck in plant science research. Currently, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is used for the accurate and efficient detection of PHs. Sample pretreatment is an indispensable step in the chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of PHs because it directly affects the sensitivity and accuracy of subsequent detection methods. Among various pretreatment methods for PHs, solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most widely used. Various new types of SPE, such as dispersive SPE, magnetic SPE, and solid phase microextraction, have been developed by modifying the extraction cartridge. The choice of adsorption material is the key factor in the abovementioned SPE methods, which has a decisive effect on the extraction, purification, and enrichment effects of the target substance in the sample pretreatment process. Carbon-based materials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon and nitrogen compounds, as well as organic frameworks, including metal organic frameworks and covalent organic materials, are suitable adsorption materials because of their designable structure, large specific surface area, and good stability. Molecularly imprinted polymers and supramolecular compounds show specific molecular recognition based on host-guest interactions, which can significantly improve the selectivity of sample pretreatment methods. In this paper, SPE-related technology and the abovementioned types of functionalized adsorption materials in the pretreatment of PHs prevalent in the past five years have been reviewed. The related development trends are also summarized.

Combination of pipette tip solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography for determination of plant growth regulators in food samples based on the electrospun covalent organic framework/polyacrylonitrile nanofiber as highly efficient sorbent

Facile and sensitive determination of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in food samples is important but still remains great challenge. Herein, a pipette tip solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) method was developed for fast and sensitively detecting PGRs. The PT-SPE adsorbent was prepared by integrating a novel covalent organic framework (COF) of schiff base network 3 (SNW-3) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) through electrospinning. The SNW-3 can easily adsorb PGRs with high special affinity through electrovalent bands between the ammonium ions of SNW-3 and the carboxy groups of PGRs. The polymer of PAN acts as scaffold material for SNW-3, which can lower seepage pressure hence accelerates adsorption/desorption kinetics. By combination with HPLC-DAD, a satisfactory method was successfully developed for simultaneous determination of ten PGRs in watermelon. Good analytical performances were achieved with this proposed method, including good linearity (5-500 ng/mL) with high correlation coefficients (R ≥ 0.9981), low limits of detection (S/N = 3, 0.24-3.19 ng/mL) and limits of quantification (S/N = 10, 1.65-5.72 ng/mL), satisfactory precision (intra-day RSDs ≤ 2.7%, inter-day RSDs ≤ 3.7%), and high accuracy (recovery: 82.8-113.0%). The method developed in this study shows high potential for design of high target-affinity adsorbents for food sample preparing.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of high molecular weight peptides using stearic acid-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposite: determination of some hypothalamic agents in biological samples

Therapeutic peptides have an important effect on physiological function and human health, so it is momentous to quantify and detect low levels of these biomolecules in biological samples for treatment and diagnostic purposes. In the present study, an efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was developed based on stearic acid-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposite (MHAP/SA) as a novel and cost-effective adsorbent for extraction of five hypothalamic-related peptides (goserelin, octreotide, triptorelin, somatostatin, and cetrorelix) from biological samples. To characterize the morphology and physicochemical properties of MHAP/SA, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM), CHNS elemental analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were applied. Under optimum conditions, the proposed method (MSPE-HPLC-UV) represented favorable linearity with R² ≥ 0.9987, suitable intra- and inter-day precisions (RSD ≤ 6.9% and RSD ≤ 8.1%, respectively, n = 3), and limits of detection and quantification in the range of 0.75-1.12 ng mL^-1 and 2.50-3.75 ng mL^-1, respectively. Eventually, the proposed method was used for the extraction and quantification of target therapeutic peptides in plasma and urine samples, and satisfactory relative recoveries were achieved in the range of 90.6-110.3%.

An ionic covalent organic framework for rapid extraction of polar organic acids from environmental waters

An ionic covalent organic framework (Fe₃O₄@EB-TFB-iCOF) as a polar adsorbent was synthesized and characterized. It was applied in the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of four polar organic acids, namely, 2-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)propionic acid, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid, naphthyloxyacetic acid, and naphthylacetic acid. The organic acids were detected by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet analysis (HPLC-UV). A method for the determination of organic acids based on MSPE-HPLC-UV was established. The method shows good linear regression (R²≥ 0.9950), high precision (1.53-3.80%, n = 6), and low detection limit (0.10-0.49 ng mL^-1). The recovery rate of environmental water samples ranges from 73.3% to 101.0%. This method provides a possibility for high sensitivity analysis of polar organic acids.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimer grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as an adsorbent for preconcentration and sensitive determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples

Polyamidoamine dendrimer decorated Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). The resulting material was utilized to develop an effective magnetic solid phase extraction method in combination with high performance liquid chromatography for trace determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including phenanthrene (PHE), anthracene (ANT), fluoranthene (FLT), pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). The MNPs@G3.0@4-MBA exhibited to be an efficient extracting medium due to the existence of terminal benzene ring groups, the internal pores, and strong hydrophobic interactions and π-π interactions. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed method possessed excellent linearity in the concentration range of 0.1-300 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R) larger than 0.997, and the limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) according to the ratio of signal to noise equal to three of PHE, ANT, FLT, PYR and BaP were 0.014 μg L^-1, 0.032 μg L^-1, 0.055 μg L^-1, 0.027 μg L^-1 and 0.039 μg L^-1, respectively. The proposed method was applied to real water samples and the spiked recoveries were over the range of 92-99%. The results showed that the method earned good repeatability and high sensitivity, and the as-prepared materials were stable and reusable, which displayed that the proposed method would have a wonderful application prospect.

Magnetic Ti3C2 MXene functionalized with β-cyclodextrin as magnetic solid-phase extraction and in situ derivatization for determining 12 phytohormones in oilseeds by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Magnetic solid phase extraction integrated with in situ derivations for the profiling of 12 phytohormones in a single rapeseed seed was developed by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The Fe₃O₄@Ti₃C₂@β-cyclodextrin nanoparticles were firstly synthesized and used as an adsorbent for the solid-phase extraction of phytohormones. The magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction and in situ derivation by the addition of N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide were ingeniously combined. This efficient pre-treatment method integrated the extraction, purification, and derivatization processes into one single step. Satisfactory methodological performance was achieved by optimization of the parameters. Linearities (R² > 0.9928) and recoveries (80.4 %-115.1%) at three spiked levels, as well as the low matrix effect (from -16.63% to 17.06%) and limits of detection (0.89-13.62 pg/mL) were obtained. The spatio-temporal profiling of target phytohormones in different tissues of rapeseed germination was investigated. This method was successfully employed for analyzing target phytohormones in different oilseeds samples.

Magnetic Polydopamine Modified with Choline-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for the Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Sulfonylurea Herbicides in Water Samples

A novel magnetic solid-phase extraction technique coupled to ultraperformance liquid chromatography has been developed for separation and preconcentration of four sulfonylurea herbicides (sulfosulfuron, bensulfuron-methyl, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and halosulfuro-methyl) in aqueous samples. The key point of this method was the application of a novel magnetic nanomaterial that composed of a low eutectic solvent as a shell coated on the magnetic core modified by polydopamine. The extensive active sites outside the low eutectic solvent can effectively adsorb the target herbicide in the extraction process. The obtained magnetic adsorbent was characterized with fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The influence parameters relevant to this method were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, good linearities could be obtained within the range of 1.0-200 μg L-1 for all analytes, with correlation coefficients ≥0.9908. The limit of detections of the method was between 0.0074 and 0.0100 μg L-1 and the relative standard deviations were 1.1-3.6%. The enrichment factor is 66.6. In the final experiment, the proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides residue in environment and drinking-water samples, and the obtained recoveries were between 70.6% and 109.4%.

Fabrication of ZIF-71/Fe3O4/polythionine nanoarray-functionalized carbon cotton cloth for simultaneous extraction and quantitation of febuxostat and diclofenac

Synthesis of a material based on carbonized cotton cloth/zeolite imidazolate framework was applied to ultrasound-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet to detect diclofenac and febuxostat in human plasma.

Fabrication of Co/Pr co-doped Ti/PbO2 anode for efficiently electrocatalytic degradation of β-naphthoxyacetic acid

The existence of β-naphthoxyacetic acid (BNOA) pesticide in water system has aroused serious environmental problem because of its potential toxicity for humans and organisms. Therefore, exploiting an efficient method without secondary pollution is extremely urgent. Herein, a promising Ti/PbO₂-Co-Pr composite electrode has been successfully fabricated through simple one-step electrodeposition for efficiently electrocatalytic degradation of BNOA. Compared with Ti/PbO₂, Ti/PbO₂-Co and Ti/PbO₂-Pr electrodes, Ti/PbO₂-Co-Pr electrode with smaller pyramidal particles possesses higher oxygen evolution potential, excellent electrochemical stability and outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The optimal degradation condition is assessed by major parameters including temperature, initial pH, current density and Na₂SO₄ concentration. The degradation efficiency and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency of BNOA reach up to 94.6% and 84.6%, respectively, under optimal condition (temperature 35 °C, initial pH 5, current density 12 mA cm^-2, Na₂SO₄ concentration 8.0 g L^-1 and electrolysis time 3 h). Furthermore, Ti/PbO₂-Co-Pr electrode presents economic energy consumption and superior repeatability. Finally, the possible degradation mechanism of BNOA is put forward according to the main intermediate products identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer. The present research paves a new path to degrade BNOA pesticide wastewater with Ti/PbO₂-Co-Pr electrode.

Sample Preparation Using Graphene-Oxide-Derived Nanomaterials for the Extraction of Metals

Graphene oxide is a compound with a form similar to graphene, composed of carbon atoms in a sp2 single-atom layer of a hybrid connection. Due to its significant surface area and its good mechanical and thermal stability, graphene oxide has a plethora of applications in various scientific fields including heterogenous catalysis, gas storage, environmental remediation, etc. In analytical chemistry, graphene oxide has been successfully employed for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds, metal ions, and proteins. Since graphene oxide sheets are negatively charged in aqueous solutions, the material and its derivatives are ideal sorbents to bind with metal ions. To date, various graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and evaluated for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from biological, environmental, agricultural, and food samples. In this review article, we aim to discuss the application of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites for the extraction of metal ions prior to their determination via an instrumental analytical technique. Applications of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the modification of graphene oxide and its functionalized derivatives are also discussed.

A Smart Strategy to Improve t-Resveratrol Production in Grapevine Cells Treated with Cyclodextrin Polymers Coated with Magnetic Nanoparticles

One of the most successfully procedures used to increase the production of t-resveratrol in Vitis vinifera suspension-cultured cells is the application of cyclodextrins (CDs) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) as elicitors. In particular, β-CDs are characterized by their chemical structure which makes them special, not only by acting as elicitors, but also because they are compounds capable of trapping high added-value hydrophobic molecules such as t-resveratrol. However, the use of β-CDs as elicitors increases the production costs of this compound, making their industrial exploitation economically unfeasible. Therefore, the development of β-CDs recovery strategies is necessary to provide a viable solution to their industrial use. In this work, carboxymethylated and hydroxypropylated β-CDs have been used to form polymers using epichlorohydrin (EPI) as a cross-linking agent. The polymers were coated to Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and were jointly used with MJ to elicit V. vinifera suspension-cultured cells. Once elicitation experiments were finished, a magnet easily allowed the recovery of polymers, and t-resveratrol was extracted from them by using ethyl acetate. The results indicated that the production of t-resveratrol in the presence of free carboxymethyl-β-CDs was much lower than that found in the presence of carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrins-EPI polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, the maximal levels of t-resveratrol were found at 168 h of elicitation in the presence of 15 g/L hydroxypropyl-β-CDs polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles and MJ, and non-t-resveratrol was found in the extracellular medium, indicating that all the t-resveratrol produced by the cells and secreted into the culture medium was trapped by the polymer and extracted from it. This work also showed that polymers can be regenerated and reused during three cycles of continuous elicitation since the induction and adsorption capacity of hydroxypropyl-β-CDs polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles after these cycles of elicitation remained high, allowing high concentrations of t-resveratrol to be obtained.

The Adsorption of Methylene Blue on Eco-Friendly Reduced Graphene Oxide

Recently, green-prepared oxidized graphenes have attracted huge interest in water purification and wastewater treatment. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared by a scalable and eco-friendly method, and its potential use for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from water systems, was explored. The present work includes the green protocol to produce rGO and respective spectroscopical and morphological characterizations, as well as several kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic analyses to successfully demonstrate the adsorption of MB. The pseudo-second-order model was appropriated to describe the adsorption kinetics of MB onto rGO, suggesting an equilibrium time of 30 min. Otherwise, the Langmuir model was more suitable to describe the adsorption isotherms, indicating a maximum adsorption capacity of 121.95 mg g^-1 at 298 K. In addition, kinetics and thermodynamic analyses demonstrated that the adsorption of MB onto rGO can be treated as a mixed physisorption-chemisorption process described by H-bonding, electrostatic, and π - π interactions. These results show the potential of green-prepared rGO to remove cationic dyes from wastewater systems.

Amino-modified Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer for online solid-phase extraction of plant growth regulators from bean sprouts

A new amino-modified Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer (NH₂@SMPA)-online solid-phase extraction method, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (online SPE-HPLC) was established for the analysis of six plant growth regulators (PGRs) in bean sprouts. NH₂@SMPA was synthesized by acid-catalyzed deacetylation of acetylamino-Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer (SMPA). The diversity of functional groups, such as aromatic, acetylamino, and NH₂, was conducive to multiple binding interactions between NH₂@SMPA and PGRs. NH₂@SMPA exhibited superior extraction capability for PGRs, compared with SMPA and commercial adsorbents. The extraction conditions, including loading solvent, pH of loading solution, eluting solvent, and flow rates of loading and elution, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, wide linear ranges (0.01-500 μg kg^-1) and low detection limits (2.34-20.2 ng kg^-1) were obtained. The recoveries were satisfactory, i.e., 86.0% to 109% with relative standard deviations ≤9.8% (n = 3). Finally, the online SPE-HPLC method was successfully used for determination of PGRs in bean sprouts.

β-Cyclodextrin Assisted Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Based on Solidification of the Floating Organic Droplets Method for Determination of Neonicotinoid Residues

An efficient and environment-friendly microextraction method, namely, β-cyclodextrin assisted liquid–liquid microextraction, based on solidification of the floating organic droplets method coupled with HPLC is investigated for the sensitive determination of trace neonicotinoid pesticide residues. In this method, β-cyclodextrin is used as a disperser solvent, while 1-octanol is selected as an extraction solvent. β-cyclodextrins was found to decrease interfacial tension and increase the contact area between the organic and water phases with the help of centrifugation. A cloudy solution was rapidly formed and then centrifuged to complete phase separation. Various key parameters influencing extraction efficiency were systematically investigated and optimized; they include salt addition, concentration of β-cyclodextrin, and volume of extraction solvent (1-octanol). Under optimum conditions, good linearity was obtained with coefficient for determination (R²) greater than 0.99. A low limit of detection, high enrichment factor, and good recovery (83 – 132) were achieved. This proves that the proposed method can be applied to determine trace neonicotinoid pesticide residues in natural surface water samples.

Synthesis of a polymeric imidazolium-embedded octadecyl ionic liquid-grafted silica sorbent for extraction of flavonoids

In this work, a polymeric imidazolium-embedded octadecyl ionic liquid (poly(1-vinyl-3-octadecylimidazolium naphthalene sulfonate))-grafted silica (poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂) sorbent was prepared and applied as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent in extraction of flavonoids. The synthesized poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂ sorbent was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The thermodynamic and kinetic adsorption models of the prepared poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂ sorbent towards flavonoids were discussed by nonlinear fitting adsorption curve and the results indicated the thermodynamic adsorption model in this work was tended to be Freundlich model rather than Langmuir one and the pseudo-second order model could be used to describe the dynamic adsorption process. In addition, the adsorption amounts indicated the sorbent has satisfactory extraction capabities towards flavonoids. For investigating the influence of independent variables and their interactions on the extraction efficiency, a Box-Behnken design was used for optimizing three greatly influential parameters after performing single-factor experiments. The interaction energies between flavonoids and two ionic liquids were calculated to understand the adsorption mechanism. Under the optimal conditions, a method used for determining flavonoids was developed by combining SPE technique with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the developed method exhibited low limits of detection (0.25-0.4 μg L^-1), good linearities with correlation coefficients (R²) in the range of 0.9951-0.9996 and satisfactory recoveries ranging from 83.6% to 114.1%, which confirmed the proposed method could be successfully used to determine trace flavonoids in real samples.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics

In this work, magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride material (Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101) has been simply prepared for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics. Due to the introduction of g-C₃N₄, the water stability of MIL-101 has been greatly improved. This composite material also showed better selectivity for glucocorticoids than those for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene compounds due to the hydrogen bonding effect with g-C₃N₄ and the size-matching effect with MIL-101. When the prepared material was used as the sorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), a sensitive MSPE-UPLC-MS/MS method was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear over the concentration ranging from 0.01 to 2 μg/L with correlation coefficients (R²) between 0.9915 and 0.9995. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 2 ng/L with the RSDs lower than 5.5%. The recoveries ranged from 77.3% to 113%. The LOD of glucocorticoids in real samples analysis was improved by nearly three orders of magnitude compared to current literature records. The results indicated that Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101 could be used as MSPE extractant to determine glucocorticoids in complex cosmetics matrix.

Development of rapid, sensitive and selective fluorimetric method for determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid in cucumber by using magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer

In this study, a novel method based on the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid with the usage of magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer prior to fluorimetric detection has been developed. Magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer has been used for the first time as selective adsorbent for the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid. The adsorption capacity of the synthesized polymer was found to be 2.18 ± 0.36 mg g^-1 (n = 3). Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method were found to be 0.75 and 2.50 μg L^-1, respectively. Linearity of the calibration graph for the proposed method was observed within the range of 20-700 μg L^-1. The proposed method seems to be rapid where the detection procedure for 1-naphthalene acetic acid can be completed within a total time of 1 h. The same imprinted polymer can be used for the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid with quantitative sorption and recovery values repeatedly for at least ten times. The effects of some potential organic interferences were investigated. Proposed method has been successfully applied to determine 1-naphthalene acetic acid in cucumber, where the recoveries of the spiked samples were found to be in the range of 93.7-104.5%. Characterization of the synthesized polymer was also evaluated. By combining the high capacity, cheapness, reusability and selectivity of the magnetic adsorbent with the dynamic calibration range, rapidity, simplicity, and sensitivity of fluorimetry, the proposed method seems to be an ideal method for the determination of trace levels of 1-naphthalene acetic acid.

A high efficient adsorbent for plant growth regulators based on ionic liquid and β-cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic graphene oxide

Four types of ionic liquids which composed of cation with imidazole ring and anion with benzene, naphthalene, anthraquinone and naphthoquinone ring were prepared and named VOIm⁺BenSO₃^-, VOIm⁺NapSO₃^-, VOIm⁺AQSO₃^- and VOIm⁺NQSO₃^-, respectively. Then, ionic liquids and β-cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic graphene oxide materials were firstly synthesized for the extraction of 23 plant growth regulators in vegetable samples. The synthesized materials anticipated the unique properties of ionic liquids, β-cyclodextrin, graphene oxide and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂, including high surface area, high supramolecular recognition capability, superparamagnetism and large delocalized π-electron system, which were successfully characterized. Among four kinds of ionic liquids functionalized adsorbents, the VOIm⁺AQSO₃^- modified material exhibited high adsorption capability to 7 plant growth regulators compared with Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/β-CD, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO and other three types of ionic liquids based adsorbents. Parameters that could affect the recoveries of 7 plant growth regulators were investigated, such as mass ratio of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/β-CD to ionic liquids, salt concentration, pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time and desorption solvent. Under the optimal condition, the magnetic solid phase extraction method using VOIm⁺AQSO₃^- and β-cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic graphene oxide material (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/β-CD/IL) as adsorbent was developed and coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry for the determination of 7 plant growth regulators in vegetable samples. Validation results showed that the limit of detection and limit of quantitation were in the range of 0.01-0.18 μg/kg and 0.03-0.58 μg/kg, respectively. The satisfactory linearities were acquired in the concentration of 2-50 μg/kg with the correlation coefficients higher than 0.9982. Taken together, the synthesized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/GO/β-CD/IL was a highly effective magnetic solid phase extraction adsorbent for the enrichment of trace level of plant growth regulators in vegetable samples.
