Comparative Study of Callistemon citrinus (Bottlebrush) and Punica granatum (Pomegranate) Extracts for Sustainable Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Their Oral Antimicrobial Efficacy

A comparative study was applied to investigate the potential of Callistemon citrinus (bottlebrush) flower extract (BBE) and Punica granatum (pomegranate) peel extracts (PPE) for the sustainable synthesis of the silver nanoparticles, Ag-BBE and Ag-PPE, respectively. The synthesis process of Ag NPs using the selected extracts was applied under optimized conditions. Hence, the effect of the selected plant's type on the different characteristics of the synthesized green Ag NPs was investigated. The UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed the presence of the characteristic silver peaks at 419 and 433 nm of the Ag-BBE and Ag-PPE, respectively. The XRD spectra reported the fcc phase formation of Ag NPs. The TEM results highlighted the morphological features of the synthesized Ag NPs. with a size range of 20-70 nm, and with 10-30 nm for Ag-BBE and Ag-PPE, correspondingly. The Raman spectra revealed characteristic silver bands in the Ag-PPE and reflected some bands related to the natural extract in the Ag-BBE sample. The antimicrobial activity and statistical analysis investigation were conducted against four selected oral pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus (SA), Candida albicans (CA), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epi), and Enterococcus faecalis (EF)). Both tested extracts, BBE, and PPE, revealed potential effectivity as reducing and capping agents for Ag NP green synthesis. However, the synthesized NPs demonstrated different features, depending on the used extract, reflecting the influence of the plant's biomolecules on the nanoparticles' properties.

Silver nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems in the fight against COVID-19: enhancing efficacy, reducing toxicity and improving drug bioavailability

Nanoparticles (NPs) have played a pivotal role in various biomedical applications, spanning from sensing to drug delivery, imaging and anti-viral therapy. The therapeutic utilisation of NPs in clinical trials was established in the early 1990s. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) possess anti-microbial, anti-cancer and anti-viral properties, which make them a possible anti-viral drug to combat the COVID-19 virus. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species are produced by AgNPs, which causes apoptosis induction and prevents viral contamination. The shape and size of AgNPs can influence their interactions and biological activities. Therefore, it is recommended that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) be used as a valuable tool in the management of COVID-19 pandemic. These nanoparticles possess strong anti-microbial properties, allowing them to penetrate and destroy microbial cells. Additionally, the toxicity level of nanoparticles depends on the administered dose, and surface modifications are necessary to reduce toxicity, preventing direct interaction between metal surfaces and cells. By utilising silver nanoparticles, drugs can be targeted to specific areas in the body. For example, in the case of COVID-19, anti-viral drugs can be stimulated as nanoparticles in the lungs to accelerate disease recovery. Nanoparticle-based systems have the capability to transport drugs and treat specific body parts. This review offers an examination of silver nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems for combatting COVID-19, with the objective of boosting the bioavailability of existing medications, decreasing their toxicity and raising their efficiency.

Synthesis and Characterization of Lignin-Silver Nanoparticles

Metal nanoparticle synthesis via environmentally friendly methods is gaining interest for their potential advantages over conventional physico-chemical approaches. Herein, we propose a robust green synthesis route for lignin-modified silver nanoparticles, utilizing the recovery of lignin as a renewable raw material and exploring its application in valuable areas. Through a systematic approach combining UV-Vis spectroscopy with AAS and DLS, we identified repeatable and scalable reaction conditions in an aqueous solution at pH 11 for homogeneous silver nanoparticles with high uniformity. The TEM median sizes ranged from 12 to 15 nm with circularity between 0.985 and 0.993. The silver nanoparticles yield exceeded 0.010 mol L-1, comparable with traditional physico-chemical methods, with a minimal loss of silver precursor ranging between 0.5 and 3.9%. Characterization by XRD and XPS revealed the presence of Ag-O bonding involving lignin functional groups on the pure face-centered cubic structure of metallic silver. Moreover, the lignin-modified silver nanoparticles generated a localized thermal effect upon near-infrared laser irradiation (808 nm), potentially allowing for targeted applications in the biomedical field. Our study showcases the potential of lignin as a renewable reducing and capping agent for silver nanoparticle synthesis, addressing some shortcomings of green synthesis approaches and contributing to the development of suitable nanomaterials.

Arsenic field test kits based on solid-phase fluorescence filter effect induced by silver nanoparticle formation

Millions of people worldwide are affected by naturally occurring arsenic in groundwater. The development of a low-cost, highly sensitive, portable assay for rapid field detection of arsenic in water is important to identify areas for safe wells and to help prioritize testing. Herein, a novel paper-based fluorescence assay was developed for the on-site analysis of arsenic, which was constructed by the solid-phase fluorescence filter effect (SPFFE) of AsH3-induced the generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) toward carbon dots. The proposed SPFFE-based assay achieves a low arsenic detection limit of 0.36 μg/L due to the efficient reduction of Ag+ by AsH3 and the high molar extinction coefficient of AgNPs. In conjunction with a smartphone and an integrated sample processing and sensing platform, field-sensitive detection of arsenic could be achieved. The accuracy of the portable assay was validated by successfully analyzing surface and groundwater samples, with no significant difference from the results obtained through mass spectrometry. Compared to other methods for arsenic analysis, this developed system offers excellent sensitivity, portability, and low cost. It holds promising potential for on-site analysis of arsenic in groundwater to identify safe well locations and quickly obtain output from the global map of groundwater arsenic.

Enhancing the anti-biofouling property of solar evaporator through the synergistic antibacterial effect of lignin and nano silver

Solar desalination is an effective solution to address the global water scarcity issue. However, biofouling poses a significant challenge for solar evaporators due to the presence of bacteria in seawater. In this study, an anti-biofouling evaporator was constructed using the synergistic antibacterial effect of lignin and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The AgNPs were easily synthesized using lignin as reductant under mild reaction conditions. Subsequently, the Lignin-AgNPs solution was integrated into polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAm) without any purification steps, resulting in the formation of Lignin/AgNPs-PAAm (LAg-PAAm). Under the combined action of AgNPs and the hydroquinone groups present in oxidized lignin, LAg-PAAm achieved over 99 % disinfection efficiency within 1 h, effectively preventing biofilm formation in pore channels of solar evaporators. The anti-biofouling solar evaporator demonstrated an evaporation rate of 1.85 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation, and maintained stable performance for >30 days due to its high efficient bactericidal effect. Furthermore, it also exhibited exceptional salt-rejection capability attributed to its superior hydrophilicity.

Antifungal Properties of Bio-AgNPs against D. pinodes and F. avenaceum Infection of Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Seedlings

Ascochyta blight and Fusarium root rot are the most serious fungal diseases of pea, caused by D. pinodes and F. avenaceum, respectively. Due to the lack of fully resistant cultivars, we proposed the use of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) as a novel protecting agent. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal properties and effectiveness of bio-AgNPs, in in vitro (poisoned food technique; resazurin assay) and in vivo (seedlings infection) experiments, against D. pinodes and F. avenaceum. Moreover, the effects of diseases on changes in the seedlings' metabolic profiles were analyzed. The MIC for spores of both fungi was 125 mg/L, and bio-AgNPs at 200 mg/L most effectively inhibited the mycelium growth of D. pinodes and F. avenaceum (by 45 and 26%, respectively, measured on the 14th day of incubation). The treatment of seedlings with bio-AgNPs or fungicides before inoculation prevented the development of infection. Bio-AgNPs at concentrations of 200 mg/L for D. pinodes and 100 mg/L for F. avenaceum effectively inhibited infections' spread. The comparison of changes in polar metabolites' profiles revealed disturbances in carbon and nitrogen metabolism in pea seedlings by both pathogenic fungi. The involvement of bio-AgNPs in the mobilization of plant metabolism in response to fungal infection is also discussed.

Confining the Growth of AgNPs onto Epigallocatechin Gallate-Decorated Zein Nanoparticles for Constructing Potent Protein-Based Antibacterial Nanocomposites

Sliver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted tremendous interest as an alternative to commercially available antibiotics due to their low microbial resistance and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, AgNPs are highly reactive and unstable and are susceptible to fast oxidation. Synthesizing stable and efficient AgNPs using green chemistry principles remains a major challenge. To address this issue, we establish a facile route to form AgNP-doped zein nanoparticle core-satellite superstructures with ultralow minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). In brief, polyphenol surface-functionalization of zein nanoparticles was performed, and the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) layer on zein nanoparticles served as a reducing-cum-stabilizing agent. We used EGCG-decorated zein nanoparticles (ZE) as a template to direct the nucleation and growth of AgNPs to develop metallized hybrid nanoparticles (ZE-Ag). The highly monodispersed core-satellite nanoparticles (∼150 nm) decorated with ∼4.9 nm AgNPs were synthesized successfully. The spatial restriction of EGCG by zein nanoparticles confined the nucleation and growth of AgNPs only on the surface of the particles, which prevented the formation of entangled clusters of polyphenols and AgNPs and concomitantly inhibited the coalescence and oxidation of AgNPs. Thus, this strategy improved the effective specific surface area of AgNPs, and as a result, ZE-Ag efficiently killed the indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) after 20 min of incubation, with MBCs of 2 and 4 μg/mL, respectively. This situation indicated that as-prepared core-satellite nanoparticles possessed potent short-term sterilization capability. Moreover, the simulated wound infection model also confirmed the promising application of ZE-Ag as an efficient antimicrobial composite. This work provides new insights into the synthesis and emerging application of AgNPs in food preservation, packaging, biomedicine, and catalysis.

Nanomaterials in 4D Printing: Expanding the Frontiers of Advanced Manufacturing

As an innovative technology, four-dimentional (4D) printing is built upon the principles of three-dimentional (3D) printing with an additional dimension: time. While traditional 3D printing creates static objects, 4D printing generates "responsive 3D printed structures", enabling them to transform or self-assemble in response to external stimuli. Due to the dynamic nature, 4D printing has demonstrated tremendous potential in a range of industries, encompassing aerospace, healthcare, and intelligent devices. Nanotechnology has gained considerable attention owing to the exceptional properties and functions of nanomaterials. Incorporating nanomaterials into an intelligent matrix enhances the physiochemical properties of 4D printed constructs, introducing novel functions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of current applications of nanomaterials in 4D printing, exploring their synergistic potential to create dynamic and responsive structures. Nanomaterials play diverse roles as rheology modifiers, mechanical enhancers, function introducers, and more. The overarching goal of this review is to inspire researchers to delve into the vast potential of nanomaterial-enabled 4D printing, propelling advancements in this rapidly evolving field.

Development and optimization of Clitoria teratea synthesized silver nanoparticles and its application to nanogel systems for wound healing

OBJECTIVE

The present research deals with sequential optimization strategy based on Central Composite Design to optimize the process variables for efficient production of Clitoria teratea (CLT) synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using biological synthesis.

METHODS

Two substantial factors influencing the dependent variables viz UV-visible absorbance, particle size, zeta potential and polydispersity index (PDI) were identified as NaOH concentration, RH concentration, temperature as independent variables. In-vitro and ex-vivo studies of prepared CLT-AgNPs gel and marketed gel were carried out using dialysis membrane and egg membrane, respectively. In addition, antimicrobial study was also performed on the bacterial strains.

RESULTS

The particles size (114 nm), PDI (0.45), and zeta potential (-29.5 mV) of optimized formulation were found, respectively. In-vitro profile of AgNPs from prepared CLT-AgNPs gel was noted (95.6%) in 8 h. It was found that the prepared CLT-AgNPs gel stimulates fibroblast and agranulocytosis development resulting better and timely wound healing.

CONCLUSIONS

The prepared CLT-AgNPs gel can be as a potential substitute in the management and treatment of acute and chronic wounds.

Polysaccharide mediated nanodrug delivery: A review

Polysaccharides have drawn a lot of attention due to their potential as carriers for drugs and other bioactive chemicals. In drug delivery systems, natural macromolecules such as polysaccharides are widely utilized as polymers. This utilization extends to various polysaccharides employed in the development of nanoparticles for medicinal administration, with the goal of enhancing therapeutic efficacy while minimizing side effects. This study not only offers an overview of the existing challenges faced by these materials but also provides detailed information on key polysaccharides expertly engineered into nanoparticles. Noteworthy examples include Bael Fruit Gum, Guar Gum, Pectin, Agar, Cellulose, Alginate, Chitin, and Gum Acacia, each selected for their distinctive properties and strategically integrated into nanoparticles. The exploration of these natural macromolecules illuminates their diverse applications and underscores their potential as effective carriers in drug delivery systems. By delving into the unique attributes of each polysaccharide, this review aims to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing advancements in nanomedicine and pharmaceutical technologies. The overarching objective of this review research is to assess the utilization and comprehension of polysaccharides in nanoapplications, further striving to promote their continued integration in contemporary therapeutics and industrial practices.

Anti-Bacterial Activity of Green Synthesised Silver and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles against Propionibacterium acnes

Propionibacterium acnes plays a critical role in the development of acne vulgaris. There has been a rise in the number of patients carrying P. acnes strains that are resistant to antibiotics. Thus, alternative anti-microbial agents are required. Zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs) and silver (Ag-NPs) nanoparticles can be used against several antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The impact of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs against two clinical strains of P. acnes, P1 and P2, and a reference strain, NCTC747, were investigated in this research. A chemical approach for the green synthesis of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs from Peganum harmala was employed. The microtiter plate method was used to examine the effects of NPs on bacterial growth, biofilm development, and biofilm eradication. A broth microdilution process was performed in order to determine minimal inhibitory (MIC) concentrations. Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs had a spherical shape and average dimensions of 10 and 50 nm, respectively. MIC values for all P. acnes strains for Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs were 125 µg/mL and 250 µg/mL, respectively. Ag-NP and ZnO-NP concentrations of 3.9- 62.5 µg/mL and 15-62.5 µg/mL significantly inhibited the growth and biofilm formation of all P. acnes strains, respectively. ZnO-NP concentrations of 15-62.5 μg/mL significantly inhibited the growth of NCTC747 and P2 strains. The growth of P1 was impacted by concentrations of 31.25 μg/mL and 62.5 μg/mL. Biofilm formation in the NCTC747 strain was diminished by a ZnO-NP concentration of 15 μg/mL. The clinical strains of P. acnes were only affected by ZnO-NP titres of more than 31.25 μg/mL. Established P. acne biofilm biomass was significantly reduced in all strains at a Ag-NP and ZnO-NP concentration of 62.5 µg/mL. The findings demonstrated that Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs exert an anti-bacterial effect against P. acnes. Further research is required to determine their potential utility as a treatment option for acne.

Silver nanoparticle ecotoxicity and phytoremediation: a critical review of current research and future prospects

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in various industries, including textiles, electronics, and biomedical fields, due to their unique optical, electronic, and antimicrobial properties. However, the extensive use of AgNPs has raised concerns about their potential ecotoxicity and adverse effects on the environment. AgNPs can enter the environment through different pathways, such as wastewater, surface runoff, and soil application and can interact with living organisms through adsorption, ingestion, and accumulation, causing toxicity and harm. The small size, high surface area-to-volume ratio, and ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) make AgNPs particularly toxic. Various bioremediation strategies, such as phytoremediation, have been proposed to mitigate the toxic effects of AgNPs and minimize their impact on the environment. Further research is needed to improve these strategies and ensure their safety and efficacy in different environmental settings.

Carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites: research progress report

Carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are formed by combining carbon dots and metal nanoparticles using various strategies. Carbon dots exhibit a reducing ability and function as stabilisers; consequently, metal-ion solutions can be directly reduced by them to synthesise gold, silver, and gold-silver alloy particles. Carbon dots@gold/silver/gold-silver particle composites have demonstrated the potential for several practical applications owing to their superior properties and simple preparation process. Until now, several review articles have been published to summarise fluorescent carbon dots or noble metal nanomaterials. Compared with metal-free carbon dots, carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticles have a unique morphology and structure, resulting in new physicochemical properties, which allow for sensing, bioimaging, and bacteriostasis applications. Therefore, to promote the effective development of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites, this paper primarily reviews carbon dots@gold/silver/gold-silver alloy nanoparticle composites for the first time in terms of the following aspects. (1) The synthesis strategies of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are outlined. The principle and function of carbon dots in the synthesis strategies are examined. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods and composites are analysed. (2) The characteristics and properties of such composites are described. (3) The applications of these composite materials are summarised. Finally, the potentials and limitations of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are discussed, thus laying the foundation for their further development.

Ultrasensitive detection and photocatalytic degradation of polyketide drug tetracycline in environment and food samples using dual-functional Ag doped zinc ferrite embedded functionalized carbon nanofibers

The efficient degradation and accurate quantification of tetracycline in environment and food samples is pivotal for ensuring public health and safety by monitoring potential contamination and maintaining regulatory standards. Hence, in this study, photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline and its electrochemical detection in environment and food samples based on dual-functional silver-doped zinc ferrite nanoparticles embedded chitosan-functionalized carbon nanofibers fabricated on a screen-printed carbon electrode (AgZFO/CHIT-CNF/SPCE) is presented. A hydrothermal method was used in the synthesis of Ag-doped ZFO, and chitosan was functionalized on the CNF surface using a swift and cost-effective chemical modification process of carboxyl groups. Various techniques, such as XRD, HRTEM, elemental mapping, EIS, XPS, FTIR, VSM, BET, UV-Vis DRS, and Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the characteristics of the prepared nanocomposite. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were used to evaluate the surface-controlled electrocatalytic properties of AgZFO/CHIT-CNF towards tetracycline. Electrochemical tests revealed that the proposed electrode exhibited excellent sensitivity for detecting tetracycline. The fabricated electrode had a low detection limit of 1 nM and a wide linear range (0.2-53.2 μM). The sensor also demonstrated exceptional selectivity, stability, and reusability. The practical feasibility evaluated with real samples, including chicken feed, shrimp, milk, soil, and wastewater, resulted in high recovery values.

Detection of atmospheric aerosols and terrestrial nanoparticles collected in a populous city in southern Brazil

The main objective of this study is to analyze hazardous elements in nanoparticles (NPs) (smaller than 100 nm) and ultrafine particles (smaller than 1 µm) in Porto Alegre City, southern Brazil using a self-made passive sampler and Sentinel-3B SYN satellite images in 32 collection points. The Aerosol Optical Thickness proportion (T550) identification was conducted using images of the Sentinel-3B SYN satellite at 634 points sampled in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed to identify chemical elements present in NPs and ultrafine particles, followed by single-stage cascade impactor to be processed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. This process was coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and later analysis via secondary ion mass spectrometry. Data was acquired from Sentinel-3B SYN images, normalized to a standard mean of 0.83 µg/mg, at moderate spatial resolution (260 m), and modeled in the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) software v.8.0. Statistical matrix data was generated in the JASP software (Jeffreys's Amazing Statistics Program) v.0.14.1.0 followed by a K-means cluster analysis. The results demonstrate the presence of between 1 and 100 nm particles of the following chemical elements: Si, Al, K, Mg, P, and Ti. Many people go through these areas daily and may inhale or absorb these elements that can harm human health. In the Sentinel-3B SYN satellite images, the sum of squares in cluster 6 is 168,265 and in cluster 7 a total of 21,583. The use of images from the Sentinel-3B SYN satellite to obtain T550 levels is of great importance as it reveals that atmospheric pollution can move through air currents contaminating large areas on a global scale.

Novel Hybrid Silver-Silica Nanoparticles Synthesized by Modifications of the Sol-Gel Method and Their Theranostic Potential in Cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Conventional therapies lack selectivity and suffer from toxicity and drug resistance, leading to metastasis. To overcome these limitations, a new category of nanomaterials exploiting the tumor characteristics has been developed in cancer nanotherapeutics. Among them, pH, metabolism, and the disrupted architecture of cells can be exploited for theranostic applications. Such nanomaterials can be inorganic nanoparticles with silver ones and gain high attention as diagnostic, therapeutic, and antibacterial compounds. Silver has been linked with triggering the death of cancer cells via DNA damage due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during photodynamic therapy. Thus, improvement of biocompatibility, modification with targeted agents, and drug conjugation promote the use of silver nanoparticles. In this work, we managed to synthesize hybrid Ag@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles via a modified sol-gel method by tackling the known etching of silver caused by ammonia by employing different bases of the sol-gel reaction. The bases used in the synthetic route were diethylamine (DEA) and triethylamine (TEA) and were monitored with silver nanoparticles individually from the absorbance peak of silver in the UV-vis region, showing no etching of silver in contrast with ammonia, which is usually used in the sol-gel method. Furthermore, we synthesized biocompatible nanoparticles with anticancer and diagnostic properties toward breast cancer cells and glioblastoma cells. The nanoparticles were characterized both structurally and morphologically. Their biological evaluation suggests minor toxicity toward healthy cells and red blood cells (RBCs). Also, the diagnostic potential of the hybrid nanoparticles was exploited by optical fluorescence microscopy. Therefore, we strongly suggest the investigation of such nanostructures as a dual platform for the diagnosis and therapy of cancer.

Plasmonic porous micro- and nano-materials based on Au/Ag nanostructures developed for photothermal cancer therapy: challenges in clinicalization

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has developed in recent decades as a relatively safe method for the treatment of cancers. Recently, various species of gold and silver (Au and Ag) nanostructures have been developed and investigated to achieve PTT due to their highly localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Concisely, the collective oscillation of electrons on the surface of Au and Ag nanostructures upon exposure to a specific wavelength (depending on their size and shape) and further plasmonic resonance leads to the heating of the surface of these particles. Hence, porous species can be equipped with tiny plasmonic ingredients that add plasmonic properties to therapeutic cargoes. In this case, a precise review of the recent achievements is very important to figure out to what extent plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) by Au/Ag-based plasmonic porous nanomedicines successfully treated cancers with satisfactory biosafety. Herein, we classify the various species of LSPR-active micro- and nano-materials. Moreover, the routes for the preparation of Ag/Au-plasmonic porous cargoes and related bench assessments are carefully reviewed. Finally, as the main aim of this study, principal requirements for the clinicalization of Ag/Au-plasmonic porous cargoes and their further challenges are discussed, which are critical for specialists in this field.

Metal nanoparticles and carbohydrate polymers team up to improve biomedical outcomes

The convergence of carbohydrate polymers and metal nanoparticles (MNPs) holds great promise for biomedical applications. Researchers aim to exploit the capability of carbohydrate matrices to modulate the physicochemical properties of MNPs, promote their therapeutic efficiency, improve targeted drug delivery, and enhance their biocompatibility. Therefore, understanding various attributes of both carbohydrates and MNPs is the key to harnessing them for biomedical applications. The many distinct types of carbohydrate-MNP systems confer unique capabilities for drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, cancer treatment, and even food packaging. Here, we introduce distinct physicochemical/biological properties of carbohydrates and MNPs, and discuss their potentials and shortcomings (alone and in combination) for biomedical applications. We then offer an overview on carbohydrate-MNP systems and how they can be utilized to improve biomedical outcomes. Last but not least, future perspectives toward the application of such systems are highlighted.

Tannin-Assisted Synthesis of Nanocomposites Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles and Their Multifunctional Applications

Nanocomposites have been widely used in many important areas due to their particular physical/chemical properties; however, just though a simple technology, endowing multiple functions into a single nanomaterial for realizing their multifunctional applications is still a challenge. Here, we report a robust method for the facile synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites via using tannin-coated phenol-formaldehyde resin nanospheres (TA-PFRN) as silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) carriers. The thickness of the tannin coating is readily tuned from 50 to 320 nm by regulating the concentration of tannin added. Under the optimal conditions, the TA-PFRN has a 23.8 wt % of Ag NPs loading capacity with only 17.2 nm Ag NP layers. Consequently, the novel TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites possess multiple functions and integrated characteristics. As catalysts, the catalytic efficiency of TA-PFRN@Ag is nearly 6 times higher than that of the PFRN@Ag. As highly effective free radical initiators, TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites can trigger ultrafast acrylic acid (AA)/acrylamide (AM) polymerization at room temperature (in only a few minutes). As nano-reinforced fillers, the addition of 0.04 wt % nanocomposites can improve the tensile strength of PVA film from 60 to 153.2 MPa. In addition, the nanocomposites can also serve as antibacterial agents, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus); as antiultraviolet agents, the presence of TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites endows the film/hydrogel materials excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding. This work provides a novel strategy for the green synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites that show promising applications in catalysis, nanomaterials, and biomedicine.

Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis in Glycerol by Low-Pressure Plasma-Driven Electrolysis: The Roles of Free Electrons and Photons

Low-temperature plasmas in and in contact with liquids have emerged as a catalyst-free approach for the selective, electrode-free, and green synthesis of novel materials. For the synthesis of nanomaterials, short-lived solvated electrons have been proposed to be the critical reducing species, while the role of ultraviolet (UV) photons from plasma is less explored. Here, we demonstrate that UV radiation contributes ∼70% of the integral plasma effect in synthesizing silver (Ag) nanoparticles within a glycerol solution. We suggest that the UV radiation causes C-H bond cleavage of the glycerol molecules, with an experimentally and theoretically determined threshold photon energy of only 5 eV. The photon-induced dissociation leads to the formation of glycerol fragmentation radicals, causing the reduction of Ag+ ions to Ag neutrals, enabling nanoparticle formation in the liquid phase.

Metallic Nanoparticles: A Promising Arsenal against Antimicrobial Resistance-Unraveling Mechanisms and Enhancing Medication Efficacy

The misuse of antibiotics and antimycotics accelerates the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, prompting the need for novel strategies to combat this global issue. Metallic nanoparticles have emerged as effective tools for combating various resistant microbes. Numerous studies have highlighted their potential in addressing antibiotic-resistant fungi and bacterial strains. Understanding the mechanisms of action of these nanoparticles, including iron-oxide, gold, zinc oxide, and silver is a central focus of research within the life science community. Various hypotheses have been proposed regarding how nanoparticles exert their effects. Some suggest direct targeting of microbial cell membranes, while others emphasize the release of ions from nanoparticles. The most compelling proposed antimicrobial mechanism of nanoparticles involves oxidative damage caused by nanoparticles-generated reactive oxygen species. This review aims to consolidate knowledge, discuss the properties and mechanisms of action of metallic nanoparticles, and underscore their potential as alternatives to enhance the efficacy of existing medications against infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

Limits of antibacterial activity of triangular silver nanoplates and photothermal enhancement thereof for Bacillus subtilis

Currently, nanoparticles are being actively explored for antimicrobial applications involving variety of pathogens. Bacillus subtilis is a major concern considering its sporulation and biofilm formation capability which involves high bacteria loadings. Also, there is natural ability of B subtilis to adapt and develop resistance to the silver nanoparticles alone. So, this study reports the limits of antibacterial activity of triangular silver nanoplates (∆AgNPs) and further photothermal enhancement for B. subtilis ATCC 6051 for considerably high bacterial load of 2.5 × 107 to 5 × 108 CFU/ml. Triangular silver nanoplates were synthesized using one pot synthesis method and showed significant photothermal response i.e., ∼36 °C temperature rise on near infrared irradiation as well as photothermal stability. Triangular silver nanoplates alone showed absolute destruction for 2.5 × 107 CFU/ml initial B. subtilis load in 5 min. Whereas, for further higher bacterial loads, the antibacterial efficacy of ∆AgNPs is observed to be insignificant. For higher initial bacterial loads of 5 × 107 CFU/ml and 5 × 108 CFU/ml, photothermally enhanced triangular silver nanoplates resulted in complete destruction of bacteria in about 5 and 10 min, respectively. Antibacterial efficacy and mechanism of the destruction assessed via scanning electron microscopy and LIVE/DEAD assay confirmed morphological deformities. Further the generation of higher levels of reactive oxygen species is also confirmed due to photothermal activation of ∆AgNPs. The study concludes that ∆AgNPs alone are effective only up to bacterial load of 2.5 × 107 CFU/ml. Whereas, for higher bacterial loads of B. subtilis, photothermally activated ∆AgNPs lead to irreversible damage due to multiple targeting mechanisms leading to absolute elimination in short span of 5-10 min for the chosen irradiation conditions. Ultimately, this study demonstrates photothermally enhanced silver nanoplates as a potential antimicrobial agent for considerably high bacterial loads of B. subtilis. Overall, the broader window of considered high bacterial loadings and its irradiation by this technique shows the full-proof nature of photothermal applications for scenarios involving high cell density such as biofilms and wound infections etc. Further, the concept may be useful for sterilization or decontamination of samples, devices, etc. because B. subtilis and its spores are the challenges during sterilization.

The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Digestive System, Gonad Morphology, and Physiology of Butterfly Splitfin (Ameca splendens)

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the morphology and enzymatic activity of butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens). Individuals of both sexes, aged about five months, were exposed to AgNPs at concentrations of 0 (control group), 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/dm3 for 42 days. On the last day of the experiment, the fish were euthanized, subjected to standard histological processing (anterior intestine, liver, and gonads), and analysed for digestive enzyme activity in the anterior intestine and oxidative stress markers in the liver. Fish in the AgNP 0.01 and 0.1 groups had the lowest anterior intestinal fold and enterocyte height. However, there were no statistically significant changes in the digestive enzyme activity in the anterior intestine. Analysis of enzymatic activity in the liver showed an increase in superoxide dismutase activity in fish in the AgNP 0.1 group. Histological analyses showed that AgNPs inhibited meiotic divisions at prophase I in a non-linear manner in ovaries and testes. In the AgNP 0.1 and 1.0 groups, the area occupied by spermatocytes was lower compared to the other groups. These results indicate that exposure to AgNPs may lead to disturbances in morphology and enzymatic activity in the liver and intestine and may lead to disruption of reproduction in populations.

Multimorphological Remoldable Silver Nanomaterials from Multimode and Multianalyte Colorimetric Sensing to Molecular Information Technology

Inspired by life's interaction networks, ongoing efforts are to increase complexity and responsiveness of multicomponent interactions in the system for sensing, programmable control, or information processing. Although exquisite preparation of single uniform-morphology nanomaterials has been extremely explored, the potential value of facile and one-pot preparation of multimorphology nanomaterials has been seriously ignored. Here, multimorphological silver nanomaterials (M-AgN) prepared by one pot can form interaction networks with various analytes, which can be successfully realized from multimode and multianalyte colorimetric sensing to molecular information technology (logic computing and security). The interaction of M-AgN with multianalytes not only induces multisignal responses (including color, absorbance, and wavelength shift) for sensing metal ions (Cr3+, Hg2+, and Ni2+) but also can controllably reshape its four morphologies (nanodots, nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanotriangles). By abstracting binary relationships between analytes and response signals, multicoding parallel logic operations (including simple logic gates and cascaded circuits) can be performed. In addition, taking advantage of natural concealment and molecular response characteristics of M-AgN nanosystems can also realize molecular information encoding, encryption, and hiding. This research not only promotes the construction and application of multinano interaction systems based on multimorphology and multicomponent nanoset but also provides a new imagination for the integration of sensing, logic, and informatization.

Drug-Delivery Silver Nanoparticles: A New Perspective for Phenindione as an Anticoagulant

Anticoagulants prevent the blood from developing the coagulation process, which is the primary cause of death in thromboembolic illnesses. Phenindione (PID) is a well-known anticoagulant that is rarely employed because it totally prevents coagulation, which can be a life-threatening complication. The goal of the current study is to synthesize drug-loaded Ag NPs to slow down the coagulation process. Methods: A rapid synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles as drug-delivery systems for phenindione (PID) were applied for the first time. Results: Several methods are used to determine the size of the resulting Ag NPs. Additionally, the drug-release capabilities of Ag NPs were established. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for the first time to indicate the nature of the interaction between PID and nanostructures. DFT findings supported that galactose-loaded nanostructure could be a proper delivery system for phenindione. The drug-loaded Ag NPs were characterized in vitro for their antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and anticoagulant activities, and ex vivo for spasmolytic activity. The obtained data confirmed the drug-release experiments. Drug-loaded Ag NPs showed that prothrombin time (PT, sec) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT, sec) are approximately 1.5 times longer than the normal values, while PID itself stopped coagulation at all. This can make the PID-loaded Ag NPs better therapeutic anticoagulants. PID was compared to PID-loaded Ag NPs in antimicrobial, spasmolytic activity, and cytotoxicity. All the experiments confirmed the drug-release results.

Silver Nanoparticles Proved to Be Efficient Antivirals In Vitro against Three Highly Pathogenic Fish Viruses

The efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was tested in vitro against three different fish viruses, causing significant economic damage in aquaculture. These viruses were the spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV), European catfish virus (ECV), and Ictalurid herpesvirus 2 (IcHV-2). The safe concentration of AgNPs that did not cause cytotoxic effects in EPC cells proved to be 25 ng/mL. This dose of AgNPs decreased significantly (5-330×) the viral load of all three viruses in three different types of treatments (virus pre-treatment, cell pre-treatment, and cell post-treatment with the AgNPs). In a higher concentration, the AgNPs proved to be efficient against ECV and IcHV-2 even in a delayed post-cell-treatment experiment (AgNP treatment was applied 24 h after the virus inoculation). These first in vitro results against three devastating fish viruses are encouraging to continue the study of the applicability of AgNPs in aquaculture in the future.

Silver nanoparticles deposited carbon microspheres nanozyme with enhanced peroxidase-like catalysis for colorimetric detection of Hg2+ in seafood

Novel methods for high-performance detection of Hg²⁺ in seafood are critical for ensuring food safety and human health. Herein, Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were successfully deposited on carbon microspheres (CMs) to form Ag NPs-CMs nanocomplex. The proposed Ag NPs-CMs could oxidize colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidation state TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and had a significant UV-vis absorption peak at 652 nm. The excellent peroxidase-like activity was attributed to the increased electrostatic attraction of CMs and the catalytic synergistic effect. After adding Hg²⁺, the catalytic activity of Ag NPs-CMs was specifically enhanced and the Michaelis-Menten constant (K_m) decreased from 0.067 to 0.052 mmol/L due to the formation of Ag-Hg amalgam which produced more superoxide anions (O₂^•-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). The linear response ranges for Hg²⁺ were 2~833 nmol/L and 2.5~40 μmol/L, with the low detection limit of 1.10 nmol/L. This method was applied to detect Hg²⁺ in seafood with satisfactory recoveries of 95.65~106.56%. A hydrogel kit was designed for portable detection of Hg²⁺, and the response range was 0.5~5 μmol/L. This work provides a reliable method for visual Hg²⁺ detection in seafood as well as a feasible strategy for the design of high-performance nanozymes.

A novel effective bio-originated methylene blue adsorbent: the porous biosilica from three marine diatom strains of Nanofrustulum spp. (Bacillariophyta)

In the present paper, for the first time the ability of the porous biosilica originated from three marine diatom strains of 'Nanofrustulum spp.' viz. N. wachnickianum (SZCZCH193), N. shiloi (SZCZM1342), N. cf. shiloi (SZCZP1809), to eliminate MB from aqueous solutions was investigated. The highest biomass was achieved under silicate enrichment for N. wachnickianum and N. shiloi (0.98 g L-1 DW and 0.93 g L-1 DW respectively), and under 15 °C for N. cf. shiloi (2.2 g L-1 DW). The siliceous skeletons of the strains were purified with hydrogen peroxide and characterized by SEM, EDS, the N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, TGA, and ATR-FTIR. The porous biosilica (20 mg DW) obtained from the strains i.e. SZCZCH193, SZCZM1342, SZCZP1809, showed efficiency in 77.6%, 96.8%, and 98.1% of 14 mg L-1 MB removal under pH 7 for 180 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 8.39, 19.02, and 15.17 mg g-1, respectively. Additionally, it was possible to increase the MB removal efficiency in alkaline (pH = 11) conditions up to 99.08% for SZCZP1809 after 120 min. Modelling revealed that the adsorption of MB follows Pseudo-first order, Bangham's pore diffusion and Sips isotherm models.

Chemical background of silver nanoparticles interfering with mammalian copper metabolism

The rapidly increasing application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) boosts their release into the environment, which raises a reasonable alarm for ecologists and health specialists. This is manifested as increased research devoted to the influence of AgNPs on physiological and cellular processes in various model systems, including mammals. The topic of the present paper is the ability of silver to interfere with copper metabolism, the potential health effects of this interference, and the danger of low silver concentrations to humans. The chemical properties of ionic and nanoparticle silver, supporting the possibility of silver release by AgNPs in extracellular and intracellular compartments of mammals, are discussed. The possibility of justified use of silver for the treatment of some severe diseases, including tumors and viral infections, based on the specific molecular mechanisms of the decrease in copper status by silver ions released from AgNPs is also discussed.

Drug-Loaded Silver Nanoparticles-A Tool for Delivery of a Mebeverine Precursor in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Treatment

Chronic, multifactorial illnesses of the gastrointestinal tract include inflammatory bowel diseases. One of the greatest methods for regulated medicine administration in a particular region of inflammation is the nanoparticle system. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been utilized as drug delivery systems in the pharmaceutical industry. The goal of the current study is to synthesize drug-loaded Ag NPs using a previously described 3-methyl-1-phenylbutan-2-amine, as a mebeverine precursor (MP). Methods: A green, galactose-assisted method for the rapid synthesis and stabilization of Ag NPs as a drug-delivery system is presented. Galactose was used as a reducing and capping agent forming a thin layer encasing the nanoparticles. Results: The structure, size distribution, zeta potential, surface charge, and the role of the capping agent of drug-loaded Ag NPs were discussed. The drug release of the MP-loaded Ag NPs was also investigated. The Ag NPs indicated a very good drug release between 80 and 85%. Based on the preliminary results, Ag NPs might be a promising medication delivery system for MP and a useful treatment option for inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, future research into the potential medical applications of the produced Ag NPs is necessary.

Removal of the Basic and Diazo Dyes from Aqueous Solution by the Frustules of Halamphora cf. salinicola (Bacillariophyta)

Industrial wastes with hazardous dyes serve as a major source of water pollution, which is considered to have an enormous impact on public health. In this study, an eco-friendly adsorbent, the porous siliceous frustules extracted from the diatom species Halamphora cf. salinicola, grown under laboratory conditions, has been identified. The porous architecture and negative surface charge under a pH of 7, provided by the various functional groups via Si-O, N-H, and O-H on these surfaces, revealed by SEM, the N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherm, Zeta-potential measurement, and ATR-FTIR, respectively, made the frustules an efficient mean of removal of the diazo and basic dyes from the aqueous solutions, 74.9%, 94.02%, and 99.81% against Congo Red (CR), Crystal Violet (CV), and Malachite Green (MG), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities were calculated from isotherms, as follows: 13.04 mg g^-1, 41.97 mg g^-1, and 33.19 mg g^-1 against CR, CV, and MG, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm models showed a higher correlation to Pore diffusion and Sips models for CR, and Pseudo-Second Order and Freundlich models for CV and MG. Therefore, the cleaned frustules of the thermal spring-originated diatom strain Halamphora cf. salinicola could be used as a novel adsorbent of a biological origin against anionic and basic dyes.

Silver Nanoparticles for Waste Water Management

Rapidly increasing industrialisation has human needs, but the consequences have added to the environmental harm. The pollution caused by several industries, including the dye industries, generates a large volume of wastewater containing dyes and hazardous chemicals that drains industrial effluents. The growing demand for readily available water, as well as the problem of polluted organic waste in reservoirs and streams, is a critical challenge for proper and sustainable development. Remediation has resulted in the need for an appropriate alternative to clear up the implications. Nanotechnology is an efficient and effective path to improve wastewater treatment/remediation. The effective surface properties and chemical activity of nanoparticles give them a better chance to remove or degrade the dye material from wastewater treatment. AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) are an efficient nanoparticle for the treatment of dye effluent that have been explored in many studies. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs against several pathogens is well-recognised in the health and agriculture sectors. This review article summarises the applications of nanosilver-based particles in the dye removal/degradation process, effective water management strategies, and the field of agriculture.

Exogenously Applied Cyclitols and Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Affect the Soluble Carbohydrate Profiles of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Seedling

Cyclitols, such as myo-inositol and its isomers and methyl derivatives (i.e., d-chiro-inositol and d-pinitol (3-O-methyl-chiro-inositol)), are classified as osmolytes and osmoprotectants and are significantly involved in plant responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity and cold. Moreover, d-pinitol demonstrates a synergistic effect with glutathione (GSH), increasing its antioxidant properties. However, the role of cyclitols in plant protection against stresses caused by metal nanoparticles is not yet known. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of myo-inositol, d-chiro-inositol and d-pinitol on wheat germination, seedling growth and changes in the profile of soluble carbohydrates in response to biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles ((Bio)Ag NPs). It was found that cyclitols were absorbed by germinating grains and transported within the growing seedlings but this process was disrupted by (Bio)Ag NPs. Cyclitols applied alone induced sucrose and 1-kestose accumulation in seedlings slightly, while (Bio)Ag NP doubled the concentrations of both sugars. This coincided with a decrease in monosaccharides; i.e., fructose and glucose. Cyclitols and (Bio)Ag NPs present in the endosperm resulted in reductions in monosaccharides, maltose and maltotriose, with no effect on sucrose and 1-kestose. Similar changes occurred in seedlings developing from primed grains. Cyclitols that accumulated in grain and seedlings during grain priming with d-pinitol and glutathione did not prevent the phytotoxic effects of (Bio)Ag NPs.

Silver nanoparticles in denture adhesive: An antimicrobial approach against Candida albicans

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) synthesized using three different routes (ultraviolet light, Turkevich, and green chemistry method using Glycine max extract) associated with COREGA® denture powder adhesive.

METHODS

Heat-cured acrylic resin specimens were treated with different Ag NPs associated with the adhesive (AD + Ag UV, AD + Ag Turk, and AD + Ag Gm groups). As controls, the specimens were treated with a combination of adhesive and nystatin (AD + Nyst group), only adhesive (AD group), or submerged on the surface of the specimens (PBS group). After the treatments, biofilms of C. albicans developed for 3, 6, and 12 h on the specimen surfaces. The biofilm was quantified using colony-forming units per milliliter, colorimetric assay, and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

RESULTS

Regardless of the period, we observed an inhibition of fungal load and a reduction in metabolic activity and biofilm mass in the resin specimens treated with the combinations AD/Ag NPs, compared to AD and PBS. The antimicrobial action of the AD + Turk and AD + Ag Gm groups was similar than that for the AD + Nyst group in all periods and viability tests, except for the biofilm mass (12 h).

CONCLUSIONS

The COREGA® adhesive with Ag NPs, mainly those synthesized using the Turkevich and Glycine max methods, showed excellent antimicrobial activity against C. albicans biofilms, maintained for up to 12 h.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The association of Ag NPs to the adhesive can add preventive or therapeutic effects against denture stomatitis, to this prosthetic material.

Synthesis, applications, toxicity and toxicity mechanisms of silver nanoparticles: A review

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become one of the most popular objects of study for the past few decades. The ability to design AgNPs through different synthetic methods according to the application area and desired features is their advantage in many applications. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles has become one of the most potential synthesis methods. Because of their strong antibacterial activity, AgNPs have been used in a wide range of applications, such as food packaging and medical products and devices. With the increasing application of AgNPs, it is becoming necessary for a better understanding of the toxicity of AgNPs and their potential mechanism of toxicity. In the review, we first describe the synthetic methods of AgNPs. The application of AgNPs in the field is then briefly described. The toxicity of AgNPs and their potential toxicity mechanisms are discussed.

Antibacterial activity of multi-metallic (Ag-Cu-Li) nanorods with different metallic combination ratios against Staphylococcus aureus

OBJECTIVE

Because of the need to extensively study the synergistic activity of metallic nanoparticles, this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of mixed metallic nanoparticles, made by differing the weight mixing ratio. We prepared multi-metallic nanorods (NRs) by chemical reduction method, with different ratio combinations of silver Ag and copper Cu, two main batches of nanorods were produced: bimetallic mix made only of Ag-Cu, and trimetallic mix made of Ag-Cu and lithium Li, AgCu NRs and AgCuLi NRs respectively. NaOH was used in the synthesis for the co-reduction of salt precursors. Ag percentage was varied from 10 to 90% in bimetallic NRs but in the trimetallic NRs, which has a fixed ratio of Li (10%), the percentage of silver precursor was from 10 to 80%. The presence of metals was confirmed by energy dispersive X-rays (EDX) analysis. Ion release was detected using inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) and the values showed that NRs are effective source for ion supply for up to 24 h. The antibacterial activity of metallic NRs was tested against Staphylococcus aureus using Bauer Kirby method.

RESULTS

The bi-synergistic mix of Ag and Cu generates more ions than the tri-synergistic mix of Ag, Cu, and Li. Nevertheless, the later was more efficient and showed higher antibacterial activity at lower concentrations. This effect is less likely to be attributed to modality of ion release. Indeed, the results of our work suggest that besides ion release, alloyed nanorods themselves are toxic and the trimetallic mix exhibited more biocidal activity, specifically at Ag salt concentrations of 30%, 50% and 70%.

Evaluation of chitosan salt properties in the production of AgNPs materials with antibacterial activity

In this study, water-soluble chitosan salts (chitosan amine sulfopropyl salts) were prepared from chitosan samples with different molecular weights and deacetylation degrees. These soluble-in-water polymer salts allowed us to produce, in an eco-friendly and facile method, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with better control on size and polydispersity, even at large silver concentrations than their corresponding chitosan sample. Chitosan salt-based materials (films and scaffolds) were analyzed in terms of antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC23915 or Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. 3D scaffolds enhanced the effect of the chitosan-AgNPs combination compared to the equivalent films.

Silver nanoparticles from Tabernaemontana divaricate leaf extract: mechanism of action and bio-application for photo degradation of 4-aminopyridine

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesised by the reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag⁰ in the presence of enol form of flavonoids present in plant extract of Tabernaemontana divaricate (T. divaricate). Prepared Ag NPs were characterised using UV-Vis, XRD, HR-TEM with EDX and XPS techniques. XPS spectra exhibited peaks at 366 eV and 373 eV, which specified spin orbits for Ag 3d_3/2, and Ag 3d_5/2 that confirmed the formation of Ag NPs. Ag NPs were spherical in shape with an average size of 30 nm as revealed by HR-TEM and FE-SEM techniques. EDX studies verified the high purity of Ag NPs with silver 46.96%, carbon 16.35%, oxygen 16.22%, nitrogen 20.25% and sulphur 0.21%. LC-MS analysis of plant extract confirmed the qualitative presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenols, and carbohydrates. Prepared Ag NPs showed good photocatalytic activity towards degradation of 4-Amniopyridine with 61% degradation efficiency at optimum conditions in 2 h of reaction time under visible light. The ten intermediates were found within the mass number of 0-450. Ag NPs synthesised using bio-extract have also shown good inactivation against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) bacteria due to the availability of free radicals.

Evaluation of Antifungal Activity of Ag Nanoparticles Synthetized by Green Chemistry against Fusarium solani and Rhizopus stolonifera

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have aroused great interest for applications as fungicides in agriculture. This study reports the synthesis of AgNPs by green chemistry using silver nitrate (AgNO₃) as the precursor agent and a coriander leaf extract as the reducing agent and surfactant. The evaluation of their antifungal properties was carried out when placed in contact with Fusarium solani and Rhizopus stolonifer phytopathogens. The extract and AgNP characterizations were performed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The evaluation of antifungal properties was carried out by exposing the phytopathogens to different concentrations of AgNPs in PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar). It was found that it was possible to identify the presence of flavones and flavonoids in the extract, compounds that were also involved in the synthesis process of AgNPs. In addition, the UV-Vis analysis of the obtained AgNPs by green chemistry showed resonance peaks at around 428 nm. Furthermore, a high distribution of AgNP sizes, with high concentrations of below 100 nm, was identified, according to DLS measurements. Using SEM images, the information provided by DLS was confirmed, and a crystallite size of 29.24 nm was determined with the help of XRD measurements. Finally, when exposing the phytopathogens to the action of AgNPs, it was concluded that, at a concentration of 1 mg/mL AgNPs, their growth was totally inhibited.

Novel Nanocomposite Hydrogels Based on Crosslinked Microbial Polysaccharide as Potential Bioactive Wound Dressings

A multitude of dressings have been developed to promote wound repair, such as membranes, foams, hydrocolloids and hydrogels. In this study, a crosslinked polysaccharide hydrogel was mixed with a bioactive ingredient to synthesize a novel nanocomposite material to be used in wound healing. Variation of the ratio between hydrogel components was followed and its effect was analyzed in regard to swelling, degradation rate and thermo-mechanical behavior. The resulting crosslinked structures were characterized by FTIR and microscopy analyses. The antimicrobial activity of the crosslinked hydrogels loaded with bioactive agent was evaluated using two bacterial strains (Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia Coli). All the results showed that the new synthesized biopolymer nanocomposites have adequate properties to be used as antibacterial wound dressings.

Incorporation of silver nanoparticles/curcumin/clay minerals into chitosan film for enhancing mechanical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activity

It is popular that natural organics are served as green reducing and end-capping reagent for synthesis of functional nanoparticles. In this study, curcumin, a natural pigment, was employed to prepare silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a coloring, reducing and end-capping agent by an eco-friendly, economic and facile approach in the presence of different clay minerals, including palygorskite, montmorillonite and mixed-dimensional palygorskite clay. It was found that the phenolic hydroxyl groups or carbonyl groups of curcumin played a crucial role to reduce silver ions into AgNPs with the ginger color. Meanwhile, incorporation of clay minerals could induce the in-situ heterogeneous nucleation of AgNPs on the surface or/and interlayer of the involved clay minerals. It effectively prevented from the aggregations and resulted in uniform dispersion of AgNPs with a diameter of 30-40 nm. Furthermore, the as-prepared nanocomposites exhibited a higher antioxidant (>90%) and antibacterial activity. Due to the synergistic effect of each component among the nanocompositions, the nanocomposites derived from different clay minerals were employed as multifunctional nanofillers to design functional chitosan composite films. By contrast, the chitosan composite films containing curcumin-capped AgNPs/mixed-dimensional palygorskite clay nanocomposites exhibited the best mechanical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Compared with the chitosan films, the tensile strength and elongation at break of composite films increased by 15.90 MPa and 27.27%, respectively. The inactivation rate of the composite films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus had reached 100%. Therefore, the obtained composite film with the ginger color exhibited excellent mechanical, water resistance, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and it was expected to develop a great potential functional packaging materials.

Controllable AgNPs encapsulation to construct biocompatible and antibacterial titanium implant

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are progressively becoming an in-demand material for both medical and life use due to their effective antimicrobial properties. The high surface area-to-volume ratio endows AgNPs with enhanced antibacterial capacity accompanied by inevitable cytotoxicity. Surface coating technique could precisely regulate the particle shape, aggregation, and Ag+ release pattern of AgNPs, by which the cytotoxicity could be significantly reduced. Various coating methods have been explored to shell AgNPs, but it remains a great challenge to precisely control the aggregation state of AgNPs and their shell thickness. Herein, we proposed a simple method to prepare a tunable polydopamine (pDA) coating shell on AgNPs just by tuning the reaction pH and temperature, yet we obtained high antibacterial property and excellent biocompatibility. SEM and TEM revealed that pDA coated AgNPs can form core-shell structures with different aggregation states and shell thickness. Both in vitro and in vivo antibacterial tests show that acid condition and heat-treatment lead to appropriate AgNPs cores and pDA shell structures, which endow Ti with sustained antibacterial properties and preferable cell compatibility. One month of implantation in an infected animal model demonstrated that the obtained surface could promote osteogenesis and inhibit inflammation due to its strong antibacterial properties. Therefore, this study provides a promising approach to fabricate biocompatible antibacterial surface.

Amphiphilic Silver Nanoparticles for Inkjet-Printable Conductive Inks

The large-scale manufacturing of flexible electronics is nowadays based on inkjet printing technology using specially formulated conductive inks, but achieving adequate wetting of different surfaces remains a challenge. In this work, the development of a silver nanoparticle-based functional ink for printing on flexible paper and plastic substrates is demonstrated. Amphiphilic silver nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution and good dispersibility were prepared via a two-step wet chemical synthesis procedure. First, silver nanoparticles capped with poly(acrylic acid) were prepared, followed by an amidation reaction with 3-morpholynopropylamine (MPA) to increase their lipophilicity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the interactions between the particles and the dispersion medium in detail. The amphiphilic nanoparticles were dispersed in solvents of different polarity and their physicochemical and rheological properties were determined. A stable ink containing 10 wt% amphiphilic silver nanoparticles was formulated and inkjet-printed on different surfaces, followed by intense pulsed light (IPL) sintering. Low sheet resistances of 3.85 Ω sq^-1, 0.57 Ω sq^-1 and 19.7 Ω sq^-1 were obtained for the paper, coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and uncoated polyimide (PI) flexible substrates, respectively. Application of the nanoparticle ink for printed electronics was demonstrated via a simple flexible LED circuit.

Effectiveness of Snail Slime in the Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles

The development of green, low cost and sustainable synthetic routes to produce metal nanoparticles is of outmost importance, as these materials fulfill large scale applications in a number of different areas. Herein, snail slime extracted from Helix Aspersa snails was successfully employed both as bio-reducing agent of silver nitrate and as bio-stabilizer of the obtained nanoparticles. Several trials were carried out by varying temperature, the volume of snail slime and the silver nitrate concentration to find the best biogenic pathway to produce silver nanoparticles. The best results were obtained when the synthesis was performed at room temperature and neutral pH. UV-Visible Spectroscopy, SEM-TEM and FTIR were used for a detailed characterization of the nanoparticles. The obtained nanoparticles are spherical, with mean diameters measured from TEM images ranging from 15 to 30 nm and stable over time. The role of proteins and glycoproteins in the biogenic production of silver nanoparticles was elucidated. Infrared spectra clearly showed the presence of proteins all around the silver core. The macromolecular shell is also responsible of the effectiveness of the synthesized AgNPs to inhibit Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial growth.

Leveraging the potential of silver nanoparticles-based materials towards sustainable water treatment

Increasing demand of pure and accessible water and improper disposal of waste into the existing water resources are the major challenges for sustainable development. Nanoscale technology is an effective approach that is increasingly being applied to water remediation. Compared to conventional water treatment processes, silver nanotechnology has been demonstrated to have advantages due to its anti-microbial and oligodynamic (biocidal) properties. This review is focused on environmentally friendly green syntheses of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their applications for the disinfection and microbial control of wastewater. A bibliometric keyword analysis is conducted to unveil important keywords and topics in the utilisation of AgNPs for water treatment applications. The effectiveness of AgNPs, as both free nanoparticles (NPs) or as supported NPs (nanocomposites), to deal with noxious pollutants like complex dyes, heavy metals as well as emerging pollutants of concern is also discussed. This knowledge dataset will be helpful for researchers to identify and utilise the distinctive features of AgNPs and will hopefully stimulate the development of novel solutions to improve wastewater treatment. This review will also help researchers to prepare effective water management strategies using nano silver-based systems manufactured using green chemistry.

Preconcentration and Separation of Gold Nanoparticles from Environmental Waters Using Extraction Techniques Followed by Spectrometric Quantification

The quantification of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) in environmental samples at ultratrace concentrations can be accurately performed by sophisticated and pricey analytical methods. This paper aims to challenge the analytical potential and advantages of cheaper and equally reliable alternatives that couple the well-established extraction procedures with common spectrometric methods. We discuss several combinations of techniques that are suitable for separation/preconcentration and quantification of AuNP in complex and challenging aqueous matrices, such as tap, river, lake, brook, mineral, and sea waters, as well as wastewaters. Cloud point extraction (CPE) has been successfully combined with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), chemiluminescence (CL), and total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). The major advantage of this approach is the ability to quantify AuNP of different sizes and coatings in a sample with a volume in the order of milliliters. Small volumes of sample (5 mL), dispersive solvent (50 µL), and extraction agent (70 µL) were reported also for surfactant-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (SA-DLLME) coupled with electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS). The limits of detection (LOD) achieved using different combinations of methods as well as enrichment factors (EF) varied greatly, being 0.004–200 ng L−1 and 8–250, respectively.
